Premier League Predictions and best bets: Manchester United to show signs of life for Ruben Amorim | Football News

Our football betting expert Jones Knows is back to provide his Premier League insight and thinks Man Utd are being overlooked in betting against Newcastle.

Aston Villa vs Brighton, Monday 7.45pm

Backing Brighton as outsiders makes sense in these sorts of games. The type of forward they like to recruit tends to flourish when playing in transition but struggle when tasked with breaking down a low block. To score just one goal from 67 shots this season in home games against Brentford, Southampton and Ipswich tells you all you need to know about how flaky the Brighton forwards are when it comes to finishing.

Highlights from the Premier League match between Brighton and Brentford

However, despite now going six games without a win, Fabian Hurzeler’s team have beaten Bournemouth, Man City, Newcastle, Tottenham, Man Utd and drawn with Arsenal this season where opposition teams offer them more space to play. At 5/6 with Sky Bet, they are one of the best bets of the card on the double chance at Villa Park.

SCORE PREDICTION: 1-2 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: Brighton double chance (5/6 with Sky Bet)

    Ipswich vs Chelsea, Monday 7.45pm

Ipswich have now lost five of their last six games – only Southampton (2) have fewer points over that period. It’s becoming rather bleak for them.

Confidence looks shot in the final third with the free-flowing, flexible attacking patterns that we saw rip up the Sky Bet Championship last season a distant memory. They’ve scored just two or more goals in four of their 18 games this season, blanking in four of their last six. Omari Hutchinson’s form has completely dipped while Liam Delap is now feeding off scraps.

A Chelsea win to nil at 7/4 with Sky Bet looks a nice way to boost the outright away win price.

    SCORE PREDICTION: 0-2

Manchester United vs Newcastle, Monday 8pm, live on Sky Sports

    Manchester United vs Newcastle United

I’m swimming against the tide here and remain quite positive on Manchester United’s prospects under this manager, especially from a defensive point of view. The structure and organisation is so much more secure than under Erik ten Hag and may just lead to positive results when confidence returns and Bruno Fernandes stops getting sent off.

The expected goals data does suggest Ruben Amorim’s influence is already stabilising them slightly, albeit the results make that hard to believe.

The market has moved too much towards the untrustworthy Toon here who have only won three on the road in their last 10 games in all competitions and were beaten 3-2 by Ten Hag’s side last season at Old Trafford. I’ll put my crash helmet on and advise Man Utd on the draw no bet at 10/11 with Sky Bet with no confidence whatsoever purely based on the price.

    SCORE PREDICTION: 1-1

    Brentford vs Arsenal, Wednesday 5.30pm

Thomas Frank lost two more key members of his Brentford back line to take their total number of injured players to 11 in the dogged draw at Brighton. Such depletion is going to bite sooner or later and this could be where that tide turns.

Arsenal, without grabbing many plaudits, do seem to have their game-heads on again in terms of winning games. Declan Rice’s return to form may have something to do with that – he’s looked more himself in the last few weeks and is carrying a big goalscoring threat from midfield.

Declan Rice celebrates scoring Arsenal's fifth with Riccardo Calafiori
    Image:
Declan Rice is 18/1 to score first with Sky Bet

He netted in the win at Palace and went close with two strikes in the comfortable 1-0 win over Ipswich. The 18/1 on him to score first with Sky Bet is too big. Back it.

SCORE PREDICTION: 0-3 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: Declan Rice to score first (18/1 with Sky Bet)

  • Man Utd ‘Make Offer’ to Sign ‘World-Class’ Star for Amorim

Man Utd ‘Make Offer’ to Sign ‘World-Class’ Star for Amorim

Manchester United have made an offer to Paris Saint-Germain full-back Nuno Mendes as they look to persuade him to move to Old Trafford, according to Fabrice Hawkins.

The Reds are desperate to strengthen their squad in the new year to give manager Ruben Amorim a chance to implement his 3-4-3 system, after losing five of his first ten games as manager since replacing Erik Ten Hag.

Left wing-back has emerged as a priority position to bolster and Portugal star Mendes, who has been described as ‘world-class’ has been identified as a leading target for INEOS and Amorim.

The 22-year-old is currently contracted to the French champions until 2026 and according to French journalist Hawkins, negotiations over a renewal have now come to a standstill.

That situation means that as things stand, Mendes “wants to leave” PSG and Man Utd have made their move by making an offer to the player and his representatives about a move to the Premier League.

The offer is one that the player is considering, and it’s expected that other clubs will position themselves to try and sign him too should he fail to agree terms with his current side.

PSG are however still hopeful of finding an agreement with the former Sporting CP defender, who has worked under Amorim previously, and are not considering a sale in the January window at this stage.

Should he reach the summer without new terms being agreed that may change however, with PSG having already been burnt after losing Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer last summer to Real Madrid. The summer window would represent the last chance for the Parisians to cash in and make some money on their star man.

  • Marcus Rashford exiled at Man United over standards – Ruben Amorim

Marcus Rashford exiled at Man United over standards – Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim has warned Marcus Rashford that he will remain exiled until he begins to meet the standards expected of a Manchester United player.

Rashford has been dropped from the squad for the last three games against Manchester City, Tottenham and Bournemouth.

Amorim has suggested his omission is down to performances in training rather than the interview in which Rashford said he wants to leave the club, and the United head coach said he’s happy to leave the 27-year-old on the sidelines until the issue is rectified.

“When I feel that it is the right moment I will change something until then I will continue to think about what is the best for the team,” Amorim said when asked about Rashford’s situation.

“I speak with him every day, not about the interview but about the performance.

“It’s my decision. He wants to play. He is trying. It’s my decision, only my decision. I’m trying to do things my way. And it’s the only way I know if I don’t do that I will lose myself and I will not lose myself. I know what I’m doing.”

After back-to-back defeats to Tottenham and Bournemouth, United face Wolves on Boxing Day.

Asked what Rashford needs to do before being considered for a return at Molineux, Amorim said: “Be the best that he can be.

“If you have big talents, big performance, big responsibility, big engagement, push forward everybody in this moment. And some guys have a big responsibility here because they are here for a long time. So this is maybe one of the lowest moments in our club. So we have to face it and be strong in this moment. That’s what I want for every player on the team.”

Amorim’s news conferences have been dominated by questions about Rashford since he was axed from the squad for the Manchester derby.

But he insists the England forward is not becoming a distraction, particularly because players and staff “understand” his stance.

“It’s not [a distraction] for me,” said Amorim.

‘Not for the other players because everybody is there every day during training, they understand. That is the key point. For the media and for the other people I cannot control that.

“But I’m really focused and they know, I’m so clear in my message, everybody in Carrington knows what I’m talking about and what I want from Marcus and everybody else. So it’s not a distraction for us, maybe it’s for the media but that is not my concern.”

In a shocking turn of events, Marcus Rashford finds himself on the outskirts at Manchester United due to manager Ruben Amorim’s high standards. Despite being a key player for the team in recent seasons, Rashford has reportedly fallen out of favor with Amorim, who is known for his strict adherence to discipline and performance.

Rashford, who has been a fan favorite at Old Trafford, is now facing the possibility of being exiled from the first team as Amorim looks to instill a new culture of excellence and accountability. The young forward’s lackluster performances and off-field behavior have led to tensions between him and the manager, with rumors swirling about a potential transfer in the near future.

Fans are divided over the situation, with some calling for Rashford to be given another chance to prove himself, while others support Amorim’s tough stance on upholding the club’s standards. Only time will tell if Rashford can earn his place back in the team or if he will be forced to seek opportunities elsewhere. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Marcus Rashford: Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim questions ‘choices’ of people surrounding forward

Marcus Rashford: Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim questions ‘choices’ of people surrounding forward

Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for the club since making his debut in 2016, having come through the United youth ranks.

However, while he managed 30 goals in all competitions in 2022-23, he has struggled for form in three of the previous four seasons and attracted criticism from pundits and fans for a number of laboured displays during that time.

Amorim said he can “separate” the decisions of those advising Rashford from his relationship with the player.

“At the moment I’m focused on improving Marcus,” he added.

“We need a talented guy like Marcus. I forget the interview now and see what I see on the pitch.”

Regarding Rashford’s future, the Portuguese boss said it is for him and the club “to deal with that when the time comes”.

Speaking to the wider media before United face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday, Amorim denied the talk around Rashford was a distraction, adding: “Some guys have a big responsibility here because they have been here for a long time.

“If you have big talents, [we need] big performances, big responsibility, big engagement to push everybody forward in this moment. Like any other player, [we want him to be] the best he can be.

“This is maybe one of the lowest moments in our club. We have to face it and be strong.”

United’s humbling defeat by the Cherries means they head into Christmas in 13th place in the Premier League, after Wolves they host Newcastle on 30 December.

It will be their lowest position in the table at this stage since they were 15th in 1986, just over two months into Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign as manager.

Amorim had to halt his post-match news conference on Sunday because of a leak in the ceiling of the press room.

Asked later how he intended to reverse fortunes at Old Trafford, the former Sporting coach pointed to the ceiling and said: “If I knew, I would solve all the problems of this club, even this.

“I know what I am going to do. That is so clear for me. I will not say I feel relaxed because I’m really frustrated. It’s a very difficult moment but we will solve problems step by step and find answers for everything.”

In a recent press conference, Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim questioned the decisions being made by the people surrounding Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford. Amorim expressed his concerns about the choices being made by Rashford’s advisors and agents, suggesting that they may not have the player’s best interests at heart.

Amorim’s comments come in the wake of Rashford’s inconsistent performances for Manchester United this season, with the forward struggling to make an impact on the pitch. The Portuguese manager suggested that Rashford’s off-field distractions may be affecting his on-field performances, and called on the player to focus on his football and make better choices.

While Amorim did not provide specific examples of the choices he was referring to, it is clear that he believes Rashford could benefit from surrounding himself with a more supportive and focused team. The Sporting Lisbon boss’s comments have sparked speculation about the future of the talented young forward, with many questioning whether Rashford needs to make changes in order to fulfill his potential at Manchester United.

As Rashford continues to navigate the pressures of professional football, it remains to be seen how he will respond to Amorim’s comments and whether he will take steps to address the concerns raised. One thing is for certain – the spotlight will remain firmly on Rashford as he seeks to prove his doubters wrong and fulfill his promise as one of England’s brightest young talents.

  • Ruben Amorim tells Marcus Rashford to show leadership at Manchester United | Manchester United

Ruben Amorim tells Marcus Rashford to show leadership at Manchester United | Manchester United

Ruben Amorim says Marcus Rashford has a “big responsibility” to help Manchester United out of one of the club’s lowest moments by performing at his best, with the manager insisting the forward wants to play.

Rashford has been excluded from United’s past three match-day squads owing to his performance in training and for “selection reasons”, the head coach has said. Amorim takes his side to Wolves on Boxing Day after the Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham and the 3-0 loss against Bournemouth in the Premier League at Old Trafford last Sunday.

United are 13th after 17 matches, meaning they will be in the bottom half on Christmas Day for the first time since 1989. The head coach urged Rashford, who has been at the club since he was seven, to show leadership.

“Some guys have a big responsibility here because they are here for a long time,” Amorim said.

“This is maybe one of the lowest moments in our club. We have to face it and be strong in this moment. That’s what I want for every player. Be the best that they can be. If you have big talent [produce a] big performance, take a big responsibility, have big engagement, push forward everybody in this moment.”

Amorim has questioned the choices of people around Rashford after the player gave an interview to the journalist Henry Winter, two days after United beat Manchester City 2-1, in which the forward said he was “ready for a new challenge”. Amorim said Rashford wants to come back into the team.He wants to play. He is trying. It’s only my decision. When I feel that is the right moment I will change something. Until then I will continue to think about what is the best for the team.”

Amorim does not believe the Rashford situation is a distraction. “I don’t think so. Not for me, not for the other players because everybody is there every day during training [and] they understand. That is the key point. The media and other people, I cannot control that.”

The coach denied he had held a one-to-one discussion with Rashford regarding his situation. “I speak with him every day, not about the interview but about the performance. I spoke with a lot of players individually during training so I’m trying to do things my way. It’s the only way I know. If I don’t I will lose myself.”

Amorim has been in charge for six league games, winning two and losing three. He was asked why United are so low in the table. “That’s a difficult question to answer and we have to know not to let this become normal,” he said. “I understand that it’s a tough moment. Since the first day that I arrived, it’s been on me because I’m responsible for the team.”

As Amorim answered, water leaked from the roof of the media room. He pointed to the ceiling. If I knew [the answer], I would solve all the problems of this club, even this [leak]. I know what I’m going to do. That’s why I feel so … I will not say relaxed because I’m really frustrated, also like the fans, but I know what to do.

“We have to solve some problems step by step. But it’s a very difficult moment. We understand the fans [being unhappy] and we will fight. The present is this. What we have to do for the future is to make sure this does not happen again.”

Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting Lisbon, has challenged Marcus Rashford to step up and show leadership at Manchester United. Amorim, who previously worked with Rashford during his time at Sporting, believes that the young forward has the potential to be a great leader for the Red Devils.

In a recent interview, Amorim praised Rashford’s talent and work ethic, but also emphasized the importance of leadership on and off the pitch. He urged Rashford to take more responsibility and be a vocal presence in the United dressing room.

With United going through a period of transition under new manager Ralf Rangnick, Amorim believes that Rashford has the opportunity to establish himself as a key figure at the club. He pointed to Rashford’s experience and success at the highest level as evidence of his potential to lead by example.

As one of the most senior players in the United squad, Amorim believes that Rashford can have a positive impact on his teammates and help them navigate the challenges ahead. He hopes that Rashford will embrace this opportunity and take his game to the next level both on and off the pitch.

It remains to be seen how Rashford will respond to Amorim’s challenge, but one thing is clear – the potential for leadership is there, and it’s up to Rashford to seize the opportunity and make his mark at Manchester United.

  • Wolves 2 Manchester United 0: What was Fernandes doing? An olimpico problem, what next for Amorim?

Wolves 2 Manchester United 0: What was Fernandes doing? An olimpico problem, what next for Amorim?

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off for the third time this season as Ruben Amorim’s team lost for the fourth time in five Premier League matches.

After a lacklustre first half, Fernandes did not help his team two minutes after the restart. Already on a booking, Fernandes scraped down Nelson Semedo’s ankle and was shown a second yellow by referee Tony Harrington.

It soon went from bad to worse in the 58th minute when Matheus Cunha’s corner went over Andre Onana and straight into the far corner, the second time United have conceded an ‘olimpico’ in a week.

United’s ten men went in search of an equaliser but the result was put beyond doubt in the ninth minute of added time when Cunha broke clear and teed up Hwang Hee-chan to slam in from close range.

It made it two wins in two for new Wolves head coach Vitor Pereira — how Amorim, who again left Marcus Rashford out of his squad, must be dreaming of back-to-back victories. His team have slipped to 14th.

The Athletic’s Mark Critchley analyses the action from Molineux.

    What was Fernandes thinking?

Fernandes only had two career sendings off to his nam before the start of this season, both during his time at Sporting CP. He has surpassed that total in just 27 appearances this season.

The United captain became the club’s first player to be sent off three times in a single campaign since Nemanja Vidic in the 2008-09 campaign. And it took Vidic until March.

And though the straight red against Tottenham Hotspur was rightly rescinded and even the one a few days later in Porto could be questioned, this time he could have no complaints.

Fernandes is sent off by Tony Harrington (HENRY NICHOLLS/AFP via Getty Images)

If the foul on Cunha for the first booking was cynical, the second on Semedo was reckless for any player — never mind one already on a yellow, never mind for a United skipper.

    And for US readers:

Fernandes has always played with an edge. Perhaps a concentrated flurry of sendings off was inevitable sooner or later. But at a time when United desperately need leadership, their captain was found wanting.

    Why are United conceding olimpicos?

If you had ‘United will concede twice directly from a corner in the space of a week’ on your 2024-25 bingo cards, then fair play. You have to admire how this team finds new, bizarre ways to underwhelm.

Anyone at Old Trafford who hadn’t heard of an ‘Olimpico’ this time last week certainly will have now after Cunha emulated Son Heung-min in finding the net from the most acute of angles.

Altay Bayindir did not cover himself on glory for that error against Tottenham and nor did Onana on this occasion either, misjudging the flight of the ball entirely.

    And for US readers:

Onana was being crowded out by Wolves players, however, and not offered much protection by his team-mates. It was a collective as well as individual failure.

And so it will go down as yet another goal conceded from a set-piece – this time, literally. United have now hit double figures on that sorry metric.

    What next for United?

It is now five defeats in seven games in all competitions for Amorim. With that, he has suffered more defeats as manager this season than Erik ten Hag did before his dismissal.

Of course that is not the full picture, there have been plenty of positives along the way, and as Amorim has reiterated, United will have to weather a storm to get where they need to be.

But he has also said he needs results along the way. United are now 14th and the gap to where they want to be widening.

Amorim after his side went behind (Marc Atkins/Getty Images)

Amorim’s side are seven points adrift of fifth-place Newcastle United, who visit Old Trafford on Monday. Fourth-place could be 12 points away by tomorrow.

Any vague, distant hope of turning this campaign around and competing for Champions League qualification through the league is dwindling. Meanwhile, problems are multiplying.

The attack lacks balance and fluidity. The defence is incapable of keeping the ball out the net on set-pieces. Amorim has lots to fix.

In a surprising turn of events, Wolves emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Manchester United in their recent clash. While the result itself was unexpected, it was Bruno Fernandes’ puzzling performance that left fans scratching their heads.

Fernandes, who is known for his creativity and goal-scoring prowess, seemed to be off his game throughout the match. His passes were off target, his decision-making was questionable, and he failed to make a significant impact on the game. Many fans were left wondering, “What was Fernandes doing out there?”

One particular moment that stood out was when Wolves scored their second goal from a corner kick. Instead of defending the near post, Fernandes was caught ball-watching as the ball sailed over his head and into the net – a classic case of an “olimpico” problem.

With this lackluster performance, questions have arisen about Fernandes’ form and whether he is feeling the effects of a long and grueling season. Manager Rúben Amorim will need to address this issue and find a solution to get Fernandes back to his best.

As for what’s next for Amorim and his team, they will need to regroup and bounce back from this defeat. With important matches on the horizon, including crucial league games and European competition, they cannot afford to dwell on this setback. It will be interesting to see how they respond and if they can turn things around in their pursuit of success.
