NC State fires OC Robert Anae, promotes QB coach Kurt Roper to play-caller

After just two seasons as NC State’s offensive coordinator, Robert Anae has been relieved of his duties, Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren announced Monday afternoon.

“I want to thank Robert and wish him and his family the best,” Doeren said in a statement. “I have great respect for him and appreciate the work he has done.”

Quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper will take over as the play caller, while offensive quality control coach Gavin Locklear was promoted to tight ends coach.

Anae, who signed a two-year extension in January, will be owed a $900,000 buyout, according to documents obtained by TheWolfpacker.com through a Freedom of Information Act request. He will be paid in monthly installments until the remainder of his contract is paid in full.

The offensive coordinator, who was touted as “a master at taking the personnel he has and making it work” by coach Doeren when he was hired, struggled to find consistent success at NC State.

Anae’s first run through with NC State featured two quarterback changes as former Virginia signal-caller Brennan Armstrong was benched after five starts before he returned to the lineup after MJ Morris redshirted following four starts. The Pack’s 2023 offense was later featured around then-freshman wide receiver Kevin “KC” Concepcion, who went on to win the ACC Rookie of the Year Award by the end of the season.

NC State’s offense was the ninth-best scoring unit in the ACC during the 2023 campaign with 26.2 points a game. The Pack boasted the No. 10 rushing offense (156.5 yards) in the league, while the team’s pass game ranked 11th in the conference (193.9 yards) during Anae’s first season with the Wolfpack.

The Pack was able to use the gap between Anae’s first and second seasons to bolster the offense, adding tight end Justin Joly (UConn), running back Jordan Waters (Duke), center Zeke Correll (Notre Dame) and wide receivers Noah Rogers (Ohio State) and Wesley Grimes (Wake Forest) to give him more to work with. But as the Wolfpack had more weapons at its disposal, the offense appeared to not take as much of a step forward as was expected.

Anae’s unit ranked 10th overall in the ACC in scoring, while it had the No. 9 rushing attack and the 11th-best passing game in the conference as he worked with two quarterbacks, Grayson McCall and freshman CJ Bailey

Concepcion, the Wolfpack’s star wideout, seemed to take a step back in production as a sophomore. All of his statistics dropped in 2024, as he turned in just 53 receptions for 460 yards and six touchdowns. Concepcion transferred to Texas A&M after the regular season.

NC State’s offense struggled to close out games in 2024 with four one-possession losses, including in the team’s Military Bowl defeat to ECU, where Joly and Smothers went extended periods of time without a touch.

Now, Roper, who has been a coordinator at Duke (2008-13), Florida (2014) and South Carolina (2016-17) is tasked with continuing to grow the Wolfpack’s offense around Bailey and the rest of its young weapons.

In a surprising move, NC State has decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Robert Anae and promote quarterback coach Kurt Roper to the role of play-caller.

Anae, who joined the Wolfpack coaching staff just last season, struggled to find consistency with the offense and failed to meet expectations. Head coach Dave Doeren made the decision to make a change in hopes of rejuvenating the team’s offensive production.

Roper, who has experience as an offensive coordinator at multiple schools including South Carolina and Colorado, will now be tasked with revamping the Wolfpack’s offense and getting the team back on track.

It will be interesting to see how Roper’s play-calling impacts the team moving forward and if this change will lead to improved results on the field. Stay tuned for updates on NC State’s offense under their new play-caller.

NC State coach Dave Doeren is replacing offensive coordinator Robert Anae following the 26-21 loss to East Carolina in the Military Bowl on Saturday.

Anae, who also coached the tight ends and slot receivers, will be replaced by quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper.

Roper, who is in his sixth year at NC State, will remain coaching quarterbacks.

NC State alum Gavin Locklear, who has served as an offensive quality control coach on the Wolfpack staff, has been named tight ends coach.

“I want to thank Robert and wish him and his family the best,” said Doeren. “I have great respect for him and appreciate the work he has done.”

A 30-year coaching veteran, Roper has served as an offensive coordinator for two SEC programs and another in the ACC. He has coached the Wolfpack quarterbacks in the past two seasons and the 2019 season. He led the running backs from 2020 to 22.

“Kurt has done a great job for us and knows what we need to do to take the next step forward as a program,” said Doeren. “He has a great relationship with our players, a great knowledge of college football and the ACC, and I’m looking forward to seeing him as a play caller.”

Roper had been an interim offensive coordinator for last year’s bowl game against Kansas State.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity and appreciate Coach Doeren’s faith in me,” said Roper. “My family and I love NC State, and I’m excited about the future.”

Under Roper’s tutelage, freshman quarterback C.J. Bailey had the second-highest yardage total ever by a Wolfpack freshman in 2024 (2,413), while his 17 touchdown passes also rank second ever for an NC State rookie. Bailey’s 144.0 passing efficiency mark this past season ranks the best for a freshman and seventh-best in school history, regardless of class.

Roper spent 15 years coaching in the SEC. He began his career as a graduate assistant at Tennessee (1996-98) and then coached the quarterbacks at Ole Miss from 1999-2004 under coach David Cutcliffe. He then spent the 2005 season coaching the same position at Kentucky and returned to UT from 2006-07 to coach the running backs.

In 2008, he rejoined Cutcliffe at Duke, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach until 2013 before serving in that same position at Florida in 2014.

After spending the 2015 season as a senior offensive assistant with the Cleveland Browns, Roper went to South Carolina, where he was co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for two years before heading to Colorado.

Roper tutored All-America signal-caller Eli Manning, the 2003 SEC Player of the Year and the No. 1 overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft, during his six years as the quarterbacks coach at Ole Miss. After winning the Maxwell and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Awards in 2003, Manning went on to win two Super Bowls, was twice named the Super Bowl MVP, and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection.

Another one of his quarterbacks, Thaddeus Lewis, spent six years in the NFL after a record-breaking career in Roper’s offense at Duke. Lewis finished his career as Duke’s all-time leader in pass attempts, pass completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. He joined the Wolfpack’s Philip Rivers as just the second player in ACC history to throw for over 10,000 yards.

In Roper’s last year at Duke, the Blue Devils enjoyed a record-setting campaign, winning a program-best 10 games and capturing the ACC’s Coastal Division championship. His offense set the school record for total touchdowns (60) and became the first squad in Blue Devil history to post 20+ rushing and 20-plus passing touchdowns in the same season.

Locklear originally walked on for the Wolfpack but was awarded a scholarship before the 2016 campaign. He ended up playing in 38 career contests as a wide receiver. After returning from a major leg injury, he earned the program’s Ken McNeill Iron Wolf Award.

“Gavin has been a positive addition to our program since the first day he walked on and has done a great job on our staff,” said Doeren.” I love being able to give former players the opportunity to work at their alma mater and am looking forward to watching his career continue with the Wolfpack.”

The Apex native graduated from NC State with a degree in sports management in 2017 and served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Wolfpack in 2018 before taking on a role as a graduate assistant in 2019. After serving as a graduate assistant, he joined NC State as an offensive quality control coach.

“I am very grateful to Coach Doeren and Coach Roper for giving me this opportunity to coach for the university that I love,” said Locklear.

NC State coach Dave Doeren is replacing offensive coordinator Robert Anae following the 26-21 loss to East Carolina.

After a disappointing performance in the Wolfpack’s loss to East Carolina, head coach Dave Doeren has decided to make a change on the offensive side of the ball. Offensive coordinator Robert Anae will be replaced as the team looks to shake things up and spark some much-needed momentum.

Doeren expressed his disappointment with the team’s offensive struggles, particularly in the red zone, during the loss to East Carolina. He believes a change in leadership is necessary to get the offense back on track and put the team in a position to succeed moving forward.

Anae, who has been with the program for several years, will be reassigned within the coaching staff. In his place, Doeren has named assistant coach John Smith as the interim offensive coordinator for the remainder of the season.

Fans are hopeful that this change will bring about positive results and help the Wolfpack turn things around as they continue their quest for a successful season. Stay tuned for updates as the team prepares for their next matchup.

  • RELEASE: Kurt Roper Takes Over As OC For Robert Anae

Raleigh, NC – NC State head coach Dave Doeren has announced that Robert Anae, who has served as offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, has been relieved of his duties. Kurt Roper, who just finished his sixth year on the Wolfpack staff, will take over that role and continue to coach the Wolfpack quarterbacks.

NC State alumnus Gavin Locklear, who has served as an offensive quality control coach on the Wolfpack staff, has been named tight ends coach.

“I want to thank Robert and wish him and his family the best,” said Doeren. “I have great respect for him and appreciate the work he has done.”

Under Roper’s guidance, Anthony Boone finished his career as the winningest quarterback in Duke history with 19 victories. Brandon Connette became Duke’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, while wide receiver Jamison Crowder established school single-season records for receptions (108) and receiving yards (1,301).

At Kentucky, he coached Kentucky Andre’ Woodson, who went on to be a sixth-round draft pick of the New York Giants.

An Ames, Iowa, native, Roper was a three-year letterman as a quarterback and defensive back at Rice from 1992-94. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Rice in 1995 and a master’s from Tennessee in 1998.

Roper and his wife, Britt, have one daughter, Reese, and one son, Luke.

Locklear originally walked on for the Wolfpack but was awarded a scholarship before the 2016 campaign. He ended up playing in 38 career contests as a wide receiver. After returning from a major leg injury, he earned the program’s Ken McNeill Iron Wolf Award.

Roper brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position, and I have no doubt that he will help lead our offense to new heights. NC State fires Robert Anae, elevates Kurt Roper to OC role

NC State has fired offensive coordinator Robert Anae and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper, coach Dave Doeren announced Monday.

In addition, Gavin Locklear was named tight ends coach.

Anae spent the last two seasons calling plays for the Wolfpack with mixed results. NC State just finished a 6-7 season behind freshman quarterback CJ Bailey, who became the starter after transfer Grayson McCall sustained a career-ending head injury.

Roper has been on the NC State staff the last six years and previously served as offensive coordinator at Duke, Florida and South Carolina.

“Kurt has done a great job for us and knows what we need to do to take the next step forward as a program,” Doeren said in a statement.

Bailey is set to return for his sophomore season, and Roper will retain his position as quarterbacks coach.

After a disappointing season, NC State has decided to make a change in their coaching staff. The Wolfpack have announced the firing of offensive coordinator Robert Anae and the promotion of Kurt Roper to take over the role.

Anae, who joined the NC State staff in 2020, was unable to get the offense clicking this season, leading to the decision to part ways with him. In his place, Roper, who has served as the team’s quarterbacks coach, will now take on the responsibilities of offensive coordinator.

Roper brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as offensive coordinator at schools like South Carolina and Colorado. With his expertise, NC State is hoping to see a significant improvement in their offensive production next season.

Fans are eager to see what changes Roper will bring to the offense and are hopeful that this move will lead to a more successful season for the Wolfpack. Only time will tell if this coaching shake-up will pay off, but one thing is for sure – NC State is ready for a fresh start under their new offensive coordinator.
