The Monster Energy Supercross series remains in California for one more week, leaving San Diego and heading north on Interstate 5 to Angel Stadium in Anaheim for Round 3 of the SuperMotocross League season.

Lucas Mirtl will no longer represent the Lawrence brothers after allegations of misuse and misappropriation of funds in one of their business accounts.

It’s too early to project how the season will unfold, but the first two races have witnessed prominent riders stumble and recover. The result has been that no one has a pair of podiums yet. That string will almost certainly end this week at Anaheim 2, and the rider(s) with a second top-three finish will separate from the pack to immediately become favorites for the Supercross championship.

MORE: Betting lines, odds, predictions for A2

Eli Tomac, Chase Sexton, and Jett Lawrence hold the advantage for now in the 450 division, or at least they seem to, but Cooper Webb is in the top five in points, and he could stamp his personality on the season by steadily recording strong finishes to remain in striking distance.

In the 250 division, Haiden Deegan will attempt to put the last two rounds behind him and establish the No. 38 as a favorite to win the West. He is great at coming from behind, but the divisional championships are sprints of nine races, not the marathon of 17 the 450 riders face.

Here’s what the Supercross riders had to say and post after the Round 2 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.

Two riders in the small bike division broke fingers last week in San Diego, so you will need to turn in to see if Jo Shimoda and Ty Masterpool mount up in Anaheim.

In 250 free practice it was Jordon Smith fast early, then Cole Davies took over the top spot. Late in the session Haiden Deegan took over the top spot on the board with Smith and Michael Mosiman also in the hunt. Late in the session Smith struck back with another fast lap.

It was Eli Tomac, Jett Lawrence and Jason Anderson as the top three early in free practice for 450s, Jett then did a quad in a rhythm the riders were working during yesterday’s press day. He jumped it and went to the top over Tomac, with Malcolm Stewart also showing speed.

For 250 timed practice, Deegan controlled the early laps then Julien Beaumer took it back and Deegan responded on the last lap to regain the top spot. Mosiman also logged a heater on the last lap took third away from Smith, with Enzo Lopes fifth in his return to

AMA Supercross! And rookie Drew Adams was sixth!

Jo Shimoda 19th but we visited him in the Honda truck and he indicated he’s racing no matter what. As long as he can stay precise and avoid clipping or over jumping he thinks he will tough it out.

But mistakes can happen and it showed in the next 450 session. Jorge Prado got it wrong in a rhythm section and crashed over a berm and into the net. He was attended to by the Alpinestars Medics and eventually got up…sporting a sling on his shoulder. That’s not a good sign for the MXGP World Champion.

Eli Tomac was ripping early on top quickly, Jett Lawrence didn’t look sorted and was cruising, but where was Chase Sexton? He didn’t throw down a good time in free practice. He finally jumped up to second here, then Jett put in a  fast lap but it was a second off of Tomac, but still good enough for second overall.

It looked like Tomac was gonna take it until the final lap when Lawrence threw down and took the top spot.

  • Game Preview: 01.23.25 at Anaheim Ducks

The Penguins continue their season-long seven-game road trip spanning a total of 15 days and are 2-1-0 thus far. It’s the longest road trip for Pittsburgh since their eight-game road swing nearly 30 years ago from Oct. 14-28, 1997 (NYR-MTL-TBL-FLA-SJS-EDM-VAN-CGY).

The Penguins are 13-9-4 dating back to Nov. 27 and in this span, only Tampa Bay has scored more goals than Pittsburgh.

Sidney Crosby’s tally on Monday night in Los Angeles doubled as the game-winning goal. Crosby, who is tied for the team lead with four game-winning goals, is now tied with Steve Yzerman for 13th place on the NHL’s all-time game-winning goals list. Only four players in NHL history have more game-winning goals with one team than Crosby’s 94.

The Penguins captain is also just one point shy of surpassing Hall-of-Famer Joe Sakic for sole possession of the 10th-most road points in NHL history.

Bryan Rust, who ranks second on Pittsburgh with 19 goals, is just one tally shy of his sixth 20-goal season. He’s looking to become just the ninth player in franchise history to have six or more 20-goal seasons with the team.

Kevin Hayes tallied a goal and an assist on Monday in Los Angeles, giving him five points in 10 games (4G-1A) since returning to the lineup on a regular basis on Jan. 3. During that span, only Rickard Rakell has more goals on Pittsburgh.

Evgeni Malkin enters this game with multiple points in five of his last eight games versus Anaheim (5G-8A). In 24 career games against the Ducks, Malkin has recorded 29 points (11G-18A), and his 1.21 points-per-game average against them is third among active players and is tied for sixth in NHL history (min. 20 GP).

Defenseman Erik Karlsson has picked up 26 points (9G-17A) in 33 career games versus Anaheim. Karlsson’s nine goals against the Ducks is the second most among all active defensemen behind Brent Burns (15), and the Ducks are the only team that he has recorded a hat trick against (Nov. 1, 2022: 3G-1A).

Karlsson has an active seven-game point streak versus the Ducks, which is tied for the second-longest point streak against them among active defensemen.

    Quick Hits

    1) Sidney Crosby has multiple points in six of his last 17 games against the Ducks and 23 points overall during that stretch (9G-14A). Here in Anaheim, he’s been held off the scoresheet just three times in 13 games, accumulating 13 points (4G-9A).

    2) Kevin Hayes has notched 14 points (8G-6A) in 20 career games against the Ducks. He has seven points (4G-3A) in his last six games versus them, which includes his only career hat trick which came on Jan. 17, 2023 (3G).

    3) Matt Grzelcyk enters this game with 25 points (1G-24A) and is just one point shy of tying his career high of 26 set in 75 games with Boston in 22-23.

    4) The Penguins rank fourth in the NHL in power-play percentage (27.1%) and have gone 4-for-7 (57.1%) through the first three games of their seven-game road trip.

    5) The Penguins own an overall record of 399-90-49 when both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin record a point in a game.

The San Jose Sharks are set to take on the Anaheim Ducks tonight in a Pacific Division showdown. The Sharks are coming off a tough loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, while the Ducks are looking to bounce back from a recent defeat against the Los Angeles Kings.

Both teams will be looking to secure a crucial win tonight as they jockey for position in the competitive Western Conference. The Sharks will rely on their offensive firepower, led by stars like Logan Couture and Timo Meier, to break through the Ducks’ defense. Meanwhile, the Ducks will look to their young talent, including Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale, to generate scoring opportunities.

It promises to be an exciting matchup between these two California rivals, so be sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Sharks and Ducks battle it out on the ice. Let’s see which team will come out on top in this crucial divisional clash.

  • Gameday 48: Florida Panthers at Anaheim Ducks

    Graphic design: Francisco Oporta

The Florida Panthers (27-17-3) begin a four-game road trip against Pacific Division foes when they faceoff against the Anaheim Ducks (18-22-6) at Honda Center.

Florida tested John Gibson 44 times on Saturday in Sunrise in the first meeting of the season series and Jesper Boqvist and Anton Lundell each potted their 11th goals of the season against the veteran goaltender in the gritty 3-0. Spencer Knight made 34 saves to post his fifth career shutout and second of 2024-25 campaign. Knight also assisted on Gustav Forsling empty-net goal.

The Ducks return home after a six-game road trip east that saw them post a 1-4-1 record, leaving them circling the drain as far as playoff chances go. Former Panther Frank Vatrano registered a game-high nine shots against the Panthers, but could not solve Knight. Troy Terry leads Anaheim in goals (15), assists (19) and points (34) in 42 games played.

“THIS WEEK IN MXA WITH JOSH MOSIMAN:” ANAHEIM 1 RECAP & SAN DIEGO SUPERCROSS PREVIEW – Motocross Action Magazine

THIS WEEK IN MXA WITH JOSH MOSIMAN: ANAHEIM 1 RECAP & SAN DIEGO SUPERCROSS PREVIEW

Hey MXA fans, it’s Josh Mosiman here with your weekly update on all things Supercross. Let’s dive right into the action from Anaheim 1 and take a look ahead to the upcoming San Diego Supercross.

Anaheim 1 kicked off the 2022 Monster Energy Supercross season with a bang. The racing was intense, with defending champion Eli Tomac showing why he’s the man to beat once again. Tomac took the win in the 450SX class, putting him in a strong position early in the season.

In the 250SX class, it was Jett Lawrence who stole the show with a dominant performance. Lawrence, who is one of the most exciting young riders in the sport, showed why he’s a force to be reckoned with in the 250 class.

Looking ahead to this weekend’s San Diego Supercross, all eyes will be on Tomac as he aims to continue his winning ways and extend his lead in the championship standings. However, he’ll face stiff competition from the likes of Ken Roczen, Cooper Webb, and Jason Anderson, who are all hungry for victory.

In the 250 class, Lawrence will be looking to build on his success from Anaheim 1 and prove that he’s a serious title contender. But he’ll need to watch out for challengers like Austin Forkner, Justin Cooper, and Hunter Lawrence, who will be looking to take the top spot on the podium.

Overall, the San Diego Supercross promises to be another thrilling night of racing, so be sure to tune in and catch all the action as it unfolds. And stay tuned for more updates from MXA with Josh Mosiman as we continue to cover all the latest news and highlights from the world of Supercross.

  • Devils End 2024 with a Loss to the Anaheim Ducks

Devils End 2024 with a Loss to the Anaheim Ducks

The Result: The New Jersey Devils were defeated by the Anaheim Ducks 3-2.

The Game Stats: NHL.com’s Recap, NHL.com Game Summary, NHL.com Event Summary, NHL.com Full Play-by-Play, NHL.com Shot Report, Natural Stat Trick Game Stats

This recap carries a caveat. Due to my location, the game was blacked out, and I was unable to watch it. Therefore, this recap relies on statistics, highlights, and will be abbreviated.

    First Period

Despite recording 15 shots on Lukas Dostal, eight of which were on the power play, New Jersey failed to score in the first frame. Instead, Anaheim was able to strike first and on their first shot of the game. A mishandled puck behind the Devils’ net led to a turnover and pass from Ryan Strome to Troy Terry, camped in front of Jacob Markstrom. Terry’s shot appeared to be deflected by Dawson Mercer’s reaching stick or Erik Haula’s body as he dove to block the shot, but it found its way past Markstrom. 1-0, and that is how the first period would end. According to Natural Stat Trick, New Jersey had 2.26 expected goals to Anaheim’s 0.3 during the first period, but as Devils fans are all too aware…statistics do not always translate to actual goals scored.

The Devils were on the power play (five on four) for four minutes during period one but could not convert.

    Second Period

The Ducks came to life in the second period, and the Devils spent an uncharacteristic amount of time in the penalty box. New Jersey accrued eight minutes of penalties in the second frame, four of which came from Nico Hischier’s interaction with Alex Killorn. Killorn would be penalized for elbowing, but the Ducks could not accomplish anything with the man advantage. Anaheim outshot the New Jersey 11 to six and had four High Danger Scoring Chances (HDSC) to the New Jersey’s three. As The People Who Matter noted in the gamethread, the game had an ominous tone, exemplified by Kurtis MacDermid’s breakaway opportunity as the penalty he was serving for Hischier expired, only to be tracked down. At the same time, Jesper Bratt was called for tripping. When the second period concluded, the Devils still trailed 1-0.

    Third Period

The final frame did not start the way the Devils would like. With just under four minutes expired in the period, Cutter Gauthier and Robby Fabbri caught the Devils deep in the offensive zone and took a two-on-one into the Devils’ zone. Gauthier passed to Fabbri, who beat Markstrom, who had come out of the crease aggressively to challenge.

About a minute and a half later, New Jersey finally got off the mat. Jonas Siegenthaler recovered a clearing attempt at the point and wristed a shot on net through traffic that beat Dostal.

Things would get even better – momentarily. With over 13 minutes elapsed in the third, Timo Meier took a drop pass from Dougie Hamilton after entering the Ducks’ zone and ripped a shot over Dostal’s shoulder. All tied up!

Meier collided with a couple of Ducks players as he followed through with the shot. A scrum ensued as Ducks players stood over Meier following the goal, and Devils teammates, including Hischier, moved in to pick up Meier and celebrate. Matching penalties were assessed to Hischier and Mason McTavish. Hischier’s third penalty of the game, which is unheard of.

But the tie wouldn’t last. With less than four minutes left in the period, Strome received a pass at the blue line, walked down to the top of the right circle, and blasted a slap shot past Markstrom. Dagger.

The Ducks blocked a total of 21 shots during this game and had 19 giveaways. In the end, New Jersey could not overcome the late deficit and lost 3-2.

    Takeaways

    Missed Opportunity

Later in the season, when playoff berths and positions are being fought for, the Devils may regret this game. Despite good goaltending, the Ducks are not a good team and have only tallied 34 points through 36 games. In the second half of this California back-to-back, New Jersey will face the Kings, who have a 12-2-1 record at home (per Statmuse). Not an easy task. I’m not saying the Devils cannot or will not win tomorrow, but they need to stack up as many points as possible. As Jackson mentioned in the preview, New Jersey will face other struggling teams, such as San Jose and New York, on this road trip, but missing out on two points tonight is a missed opportunity.

    Dostal is Legit

Bryce Salvador discussed Dostal and his impact on Anaheim’s goals against ranking during MSG’s pregame coverage. Following the game on Tuesday night, Anaheim is second in the NHL in expected goals against (xGA) at five-on-five with 88.23 per Natural Stat Trick. Dostal has saved 3.91 goals above average, which is why Anaheim’s actual goals against (GA) ranking is at the league average (or better) with 68 (per Natural Stat Trick). The Ducks were expected to score 1.46 goals tonight but found a way to score three. The way Dostal is playing, three goals are enough to win, and with Anaheim’s offense, it has to be.

    Status as 2024 Ends

Despite the disappointment of the last two games, the Devils end 2024 in second place in the Metropolitan Division. Yes, the first-place Capitals and third-place Hurricanes have played three fewer games than the Devils. I realize this sentiment might be unwelcome after the last two games, but after the disaster that was last season, I’ll take it. This team has its issues. New Jersey desperately needs to add talent or find the right line combination to get more depth scoring. The top two lines have played well, and Markstrom ended 2024 with a stretch of good performances.

    Your Thoughts

Happy New Year to all The People Who Matter! What did I miss in this recap? Will the Devils regret missing out on these two points later in the year? Are you happy with the Devils’ position at this point? Let me know in the comments below. I apologize for the abbreviated recap; thank you for reading, and GO DEVILS!

In a disappointing turn of events, the Devils end their 2024 season with a loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Despite a strong effort from the team, they were unable to come out on top in the final game of the season.

Fans are left wondering what could have been as the Devils fall short of their playoff aspirations. It’s a tough way to end the season, but the team will regroup and come back stronger next year.

Stay tuned for updates on the Devils’ offseason plans and what changes may be in store for the team heading into the next season.

Gamethread 12/31/2024: New Jersey Devils at Anaheim Ducks

Today is the last day of the year. Our Favorite Team is in Orange County and will hopefully celebrate a victory this evening. Not too hard, though. They have a game tomorrow.

    The Time: 8:00 PM ET

The Broadcast: TV: MSGSN, Victory+; Audio: Devils Hockey Radio

The Matchup: The New Jersey Devils at the Anaheim Ducks

The Song of the Evening: This past year saw the continued ascendency from Knocked Loose. Some hardcore bands veer in a more mainstream direction if they get bigger. Knocked Loose has become even heavier with their 2024 album You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To. A great example is “Moss Covers All” which goes right into “Take Me Home.”

The Rules: The rules remain as they have been even with this being the end of the year. Please keep your language clean (this means no swearing, don’t mask it, it’s not enough, no I don’t care what Tom Fitzgerald said in the preseason), respect your fellow Devils fan with no personal attacks (play nice or you will not play here), no illegal streams (this means no asking, no hints, no nothing about it), and please keep your comments relevant to this game. Go Devils!

Welcome to tonight’s Gamethread as the New Jersey Devils take on the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
