  • Los Angeles Rams’ young defense filling Aaron Donald-sized hole

LOS ANGELES — From the moment Aaron Donald retired in March 2024, those in the Los Angeles Rams organization have been clear.

The future Hall of Fame defensive tackle was irreplaceable.

“The ‘one of one’ term gets thrown around loosely,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said. “He’s really one of one.”

But when Donald decided he would retire after 10 seasons, trying to replace his production was at the top of the Rams’ offseason to-do list.

The team had taken a step toward figuring out life without Donald a year earlier when it drafted defensive tackle Kobie Turner and outside linebacker Byron Young in the third round.

Though the Rams didn’t know exactly when Donald would retire, figuring out how to “play defense without someone who changes the math quite like him” has been on general manager Les Snead’s mind for a while.

“Three years ago, when you were like, ‘When Aaron retires, there’s not going to be another one of him. So, we were going to have to play defense differently,’” Snead said at the league meetings in March.

In April, the Rams used the No. 19 pick to draft outside linebacker Jared Verse and traded up the next day to No. 39 to draft his Florida State teammate, defensive tackle Braden Fiske. Along with defensive tackle Bobby Brown III and outside linebacker Michael Hoecht, the Rams’ defensive front has grown significantly since the start of the season.

The unit that gave up 489 total yards in Week 2 has held opponents to fewer than 10 points in five or their past six games. The exception was the Rams’ Week 18 loss to the Seattle Seahawks when key players on Los Angeles’ defense did not get their typical workload with the NFC West already clinched.

The defense as a whole, sans Donald, has gone from perhaps the team’s Achilles heel to a group that impressed in a 27-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the wild-card round Monday, sacking quarterback Sam Darnold nine times to tie an NFL playoff record. The Rams’ next test will come in their divisional round matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday (3 p.m. ET, NBC/Peacock), a team they lost to 37-20 in Week 12.

“It’s just a huge credit to Les [Snead] and our front office of just ID’ing the right type of guys and really building it in the last two years through the draft,” first-year defensive coordinator Chris Shula said. “With B.Y. [Young] and Kobie [Turner] obviously two years ago and then with Fiske and Verse last year. Just getting guys with the skill set that we think fits.

“The No. 1 thing is affecting the passer in this league and having a front that can do that is huge.”

THE DEFENSE’S GROWING pains showed early in the season. In Week 2, the Rams were blown out by the Arizona Cardinals, losing 41-10 and giving up those 489 total yards, including 258 rushing. It was a game McVay called “incredibly humbling,” saying, “there is not anything positive that I can take away from today.”

“It sucks,” Verse said after the game. “They put up almost 500 yards of total offense on us. They were able to run the ball, they were able to pass the ball and that’s just demoralizing when a team is able to do both. The biggest thing though is that [it’s] our fault. It was a lack of execution on [the defense’s] part, myself included.”

The Rams’ bye in Week 5 was a turning point. After starting 1-4 with losses to the Detroit Lions, Cardinals, Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles won nine of their next 11 games to win the NFC West.

It was around that bye week, Verse said, that a friendly competition started brewing among the pass rushers. Whomever finished the regular season with the most sacks would get to keep his beard.

In Week 17 against the Cardinals, Fiske had the sack lead — “for about a quarter!” he said after the game — but Turner caught up to end the game knotted at eight. In the regular-season finale against the Seattle Seahawks in which starters did not play their typical workload, Fiske had half a sack, which gave him the team lead.

Fiske’s 8.5 regular-season sacks led the NFL’s rookie class and Rams rookies combined for 13.5 sacks, which is the most in the NFL.

“They’re doing a hell of a job,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said after the Rams beat the Arizona Cardinals 13-9 in Week 17. “… I want to make more plays to make sure they don’t have to do as much as they did tonight, but I’m proud of them. It’s awesome to watch where they were in training camp to where they are now. “

Although the beard competition has seemingly been won by Fiske — “maybe I can see if Braden will extend it through the playoffs,” Turner said Monday night — the sacks kept coming against the Vikings.

Eight Rams players had at least half a sack, which is the most in a playoff game since individual sacks became an official statistic in 1982, according to ESPN Research. Turner led the way with two sacks and Young and Neville Gallimore each had 1.5.

“I’m like, what the hell?” Verse said after the game. “I’m like, it’s a sack party. I am not invited.”

Verse did not have a sack against the Vikings, but he did have a fumble recovery for a touchdown to give the Rams a 17-3 lead in the second quarter.

Verse was selected to the Pro Bowl, the Rams’ lone representative, and he said it “was really surreal to see how much happiness” his teammates had for him when it was announced in a team meeting.

“And it’s really thanks to them because they’ve helped push me every day,” Verse said. “If I’m not hitting the standard that we have set, they’re going to make me elevate so I can push us all to a higher level.”

DURING THE 2023 offseason, the Rams made a drastic change to the way they approached team building. Instead of trading draft picks for star veteran players, they retooled a unit through the draft that had lost key contributors on defense.

When Snead sat down with Donald to explain the approach, the defensive tackle’s response resonated with the general manager.

Just make sure they care,” Donald told Snead, referring to the new faces.

That draft class included Turner, who has said many times how much he learned about football and leadership during the one season he played with Donald. And although Donald is no longer in the building, the type of player he was referring to is what stood out to the front office and coaching staff about Verse and Fiske.

“The one thing that’s most prevalent about those two is that they’re our kind of guys,” outside linebackers coach Joe Coniglio said. “They came in here, they wanted to work, they want to get better. They have the aspirations to be really good, great players, and they continue to work every single day to achieve that task.”

Though Verse and Fiske never played with Donald, Turner said Donald’s fingerprints are still all over the defense because the way he carried himself is “something that’ll definitely echo.” Turner said because of the way Donald approached every day, whether it was the meeting room, practice or even a walkthrough, “you just don’t forget him.”

“Those guys got in the locker room and got in the facility, and they showed that they were the exact guys that I thought they were,” Turner said. “And they were guys similar to what Aaron would’ve wanted, that were just people who cared and people who went about things the right way and people who really worked hard to get what they wanted.”

And Monday night against the Vikings, the Rams’ defense had one of its best performances of the season, and they did it with the newly retired Donald in the stands.

“It’s simple,” Verse said. “We just had to show him he left it in good hands.”

In the wake of star defensive lineman Aaron Donald’s absence, the Los Angeles Rams’ young defense is stepping up to fill the massive void left by the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

Donald, who is currently holding out for a new contract, is arguably the best defensive player in the league and his presence on the field is sorely missed. However, the Rams’ young defenders are showing that they are more than capable of holding their own in his absence.

Rookie defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day has been turning heads in training camp with his impressive play and has shown that he has the potential to be a disruptive force on the defensive line. Fellow rookie, linebacker Micah Kiser, has also been making a strong case for a starting role with his standout performances in practice.

In addition to the young talent, veterans like Ndamukong Suh and Michael Brockers are providing leadership and stability on the defensive side of the ball. With a mix of experienced players and hungry rookies, the Rams’ defense is looking strong even without Donald.

While Donald’s presence is irreplaceable, the young defense is proving that they are up to the challenge of filling the Aaron Donald-sized hole. As the regular season approaches, it will be interesting to see how this group of talented players continues to grow and develop.

  • Menendez brothers hearing rescheduled due to LA wildfires – NBC Los Angeles

The highly anticipated resentencing hearing for Lyle and Erik Menendez has been rescheduled due to the Los Angeles County wildfires.

Originally set for Jan. 30 and 31, the county’s top prosecutor announced Friday that a judge continued the hearing to March 20-21.

“The continuance is due to the impact of recent wildfires on the parties’ extensive preparations for the hearings,” according to a statement from District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Gascón recommended resentencing in October for the brothers, serving life sentences for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents at the family’s Beverly Hills mansion. Hochman, who defeated Gascón in the November election, met earlier this year with family members who support resentencing.

Prosecutors in California are reviewing the convictions of the Menendez brothers, who were found guilty in the 1989 killing of their parents, officials said on Thursday.

The deadly Eaton and Palisades fires started Jan. 7 and became two of the most destructive on record in California.

The Menendez brothers hearing, originally scheduled for next week, has been rescheduled due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. The brothers, who were convicted of killing their parents in a high-profile case in the early 1990s, were set to appear in court for a hearing related to their ongoing legal proceedings.

The wildfires in the Los Angeles area have forced the closure of the courthouse where the hearing was set to take place, leading to the rescheduling of the event. The Menendez brothers, who have been in prison for over two decades, were hoping for a chance at a new trial or reduced sentence.

The rescheduled hearing date has not yet been announced, but it is clear that the wildfires have had a significant impact on the justice system in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Tanner Scott to sign with Dodgers: Los Angeles superteam adds elite reliever on $72 million deal, per report

    scott-getty.png
    Getty Images

High-leverage reliever Tanner Scott has agreed to terms with the Dodgers on a four-year, $72 million free-agent contract, reports MLB.com.

This past season, the right-hander Scott boasted a 1.75 ERA in 72 combined innings for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres, who acquired him leading up to the trade deadline. Over that span, Scott struck out 84 batters and issued 32 unintentional walks. He also picked up 22 saves and notched his first All-Star selection. Scott isn’t far removed from a 2023 season that saw him top 100 strikeouts – a quite meaningful feat for a contemporary reliever. Scott this past season averaged 97 mph with his fastball, which put him in the 91st percentile among major-league hurlers.

Earlier in the offseason, CBS Sports ranked Scott as the No. 27 available free agent in the current class. Here’s part of our write-up:

Scott’s last two seasons have been something to behold. In 150 innings, he’s notched a 2.04 ERA and has struck out more than 31% of the batters he’s faced. Not bad for someone who came into his age-28 season equipped with a 4.61 ERA. Scott has two big-time offerings: a 97 mph rising heater and a devastating slider that generated nearly 40% whiffs in 2024. He has battled his command throughout his career, but otherwise he’s a compelling candidate to be known as the best and nastiest anonymous reliever in the game.

For his career, the 30-year-old Scott has an ERA+ of 125. Over the last two seasons, however, that ERA+ figure is 224. The Dodgers are no doubt hoping that the more recent, upgraded version of Scott prevails moving forward.

According to recent reports, elite reliever Tanner Scott is set to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a blockbuster $72 million deal. This move is expected to bolster the Dodgers’ already impressive bullpen and solidify their status as a superteam in the MLB.

Scott, known for his electric stuff and dominant performances on the mound, will provide the Dodgers with another weapon to use in high-leverage situations. His addition to the team is sure to strike fear into the hearts of opposing hitters and give the Dodgers a significant advantage as they look to make another deep playoff run.

With the addition of Scott, the Dodgers’ pitching staff is shaping up to be one of the best in the league, with a mix of veteran experience and young talent. Fans can expect to see Scott playing a key role in the team’s quest for another World Series title.

Overall, this signing is a huge win for the Dodgers and their fans, as they continue to build a powerhouse team that is poised for success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates as the deal is finalized and Scott officially joins the Dodgers’ roster.

  • Dana White confirms status of UFC 311 amid Los Angeles wildfires

UFC 311 Staying in California, Dana White Reveals

During an appearance on “The Jim Rome Show,” UFC CEO Dana White was asked if there’s any chance UFC 311 will be moved. White has confirmed that plans remain unchanged.

“No, there’s no chance we move it,” White said. “We’ll be there on Saturday, 100 percent.”

White was then asked if he believes UFC 311 can be an uplifting event for the people of California.

“Yeah, that’s kind of the vibe that I’ve been getting from people that are going,” White said. “They’re excited to go to the fight and not think about what’s been going [on]. What’s crazy is I was there the night the fire started. I was actually out there for meetings and that was the first night, and it felt really crazy. For people that aren’t in LA, and you used to see it, all these fires in Southern California or whatever. This was a whole different vibe and feeling and it’s only gotten worse. So, yeah, I think this is definitely gonna be a boost for the people who live there.”

Ariel Helwani previously reported that while UFC officials were hopeful that the promotion’s first pay-per-view event of 2025 would stay in California, the company was prepared to change location if need be. Helwani reported that the frontrunner was Las Vegas, which White later confirmed when speaking to Adin Ross.

The Intuit Dome remains the site of UFC 311 and it’ll be the organization’s debut inside the new venue.

Amid the devastating wildfires currently raging through Los Angeles, UFC President Dana White has confirmed the status of UFC 311.

In a statement released earlier today, White assured fans that the event will go on as scheduled, with the safety and well-being of fighters, staff, and fans being the top priority. He also expressed gratitude to the first responders and firefighters working tirelessly to contain the wildfires and protect the community.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are in constant communication with local authorities to ensure the safety of everyone involved in UFC 311,” White said. “Our thoughts are with those affected by the wildfires, and we are committed to supporting relief efforts however we can.”

UFC 311 is set to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on December 15th, featuring a highly anticipated lineup of fights. Fans can expect an exciting night of action, as the fighters showcase their skills in the octagon.

Stay tuned for further updates and information on UFC 311 as the event approaches. Our thoughts are with those affected by the wildfires, and we hope for a swift resolution to the ongoing crisis.

  • Mapping the damage in Los Angeles from the Eaton and Palisades fires

In the 10 days since Los Angeles’ unprecedented firestorm began, the Eaton and Palisades fires have consumed nearly 40,000 acres of homes, businesses and landmarks in Altadena and Pacific Palisades and have killed at least two dozen people.

Both fires now rank among the 10 most destructive in California history and the most costly in U.S. history. Fire crews have yet to fully contain the blazes. As of Friday afternoon, the Eaton fire was 65% contained. The Palisades fire was 31% contained.

Check your home’s status on L.A. County’s damage maps

Impacted residents can find damage level, inspection reports and images of their homes on the county’s official damage maps.

The Los Angeles Times is tracking damage in the fire areas but encourage residents to utilize the recovery.lacounty.gov resource to find details about specific locations. The recovery maps give residents the ability to identify the conditions at their homes, even before evacuation orders are lifted and allow them to begin the insurance claims process.

Inspections of the Eaton and Palisades fire zones are ongoing.

Aerial surveys estimate more than 7,000 structures are destroyed in the Eaton fire and more than 5,000 structures in the Palisades fire, according to CalFire.

On the ground, dozens of teams are assessing the damage building by building, home by home. Everything larger than 120 square feet is included in their reports. So far, about 75% of the structures within the Eaton fire perimeter have been inspected, and 50% of buildings in the Palisades.

The maps now reflects only a fraction of the structures lost — because homes and businesses will not be officially declared damaged or destroyed until they are inspected. The massive loss numbers were based on aerial reviews.

Most of the buildings affected were single-family residences. In Altadena, community fixtures such as the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center and Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church burned to the ground. Coastal landmarks in the Palisades and Malibu — Reel Inn and Cholada Thai — were consumed by flames. Schools were gutted.

    Eaton fire

Early in the evening of Jan. 7, Altadena and Pasadena residents saw flames in the distance at Eaton Canyon — an area known for horseback riding, hiking trails, streams and wild animals. The earliest reports indicated that the fire was modest but it ballooned in hurricane-strength wind conditions, ultimately swallowing up more than 14,000 acres as it spread through neighborhoods, destroying thousands of structures and taking the lives of at least 16.

A power outage had left much of the area pitch-black. Tens of thousands of residents were ordered to evacuate. As powerful winds grew, some stayed to fight flames from their roofs while others fled, navigating their way from home without working traffic lights amid flying debris. Residents of a senior home were rushed to safety.

By 3 a.m., the fire had moved east to west. Embers rained down as more residents escaped while their streets burned behind them.

The next morning, many returned to find their homes crumbled or on fire. Desperate, they sprayed flames with hoses and tried to prevent embers from flying again as firetrucks were sparse. The lucky ones whose houses stood coped with survivors’ guilt, unsure why their home was spared when others were not.

In Altadena, Maral Nazarian, 60, watched in tears as the remnants of her house burned. She grew up in the rustic town; this disaster was incomprehensible.

“We never expected this. We thought we were far enough from the hills,” she said in disbelief.

Altadena resident Maral Nazarian and her husband watched the remnants of their house burn Jan. 8 after the Eaton fire destroyed their neighborhood.

(Colleen Shalby / Los Angeles Times)

Altadena sits above Pasadena, nestled against the foothills of the mountains. But it isn’t considered a traditional mountain town.

The fire left longtime residents in shock that it made it so far south, leaving many residents who live and work in the community without home or income. Nearly 42,000 people live in the largely working-class neighborhood.

It destroyed the area’s first main business district on North Lake Avenue, demolishing longtime fixtures such as Altadena Hardware and Fox’s; Steve’s Pets and the Rancho. It gutted the Aldi grocery store, nearby schools and churches. Farther north, the buildings at the historic Charles S. Farnsworth Park were gone.

Less than two miles west on North Fair Oaks Ave., the fire destroyed more Altadena staples including the beloved Little Hen Coffee Shop and a newer neighborhood favorite, Pizza of Venice.

Farther east, a historic Pasadena synagogue was left shattered.

In between and all around, the fire left a wake of disaster. In certain parts, it wiped away entire neighborhood blocks.

Gonzalo M., 53, had driven for three days from Arizona to check on his home in Altadena where he grew up and where his mother still lived. His mom was evacuated by a neighbor and was safe. But the house he’d known his entire life was destroyed, along with the others on his street.

A fire hydrant had been installed on the corner of his block in recent years as California’s brush fires have grown. Gonzalo doesn’t know if it was used, or if the water had run out.

“It’s devastating,” he said. “You work so hard for all this stuff. It’s terrible.”

By Jan. 9, much of the area had been barricaded. The National Guard and law enforcement stationed themselves at most entry points to the neighborhoods where downed power lines and trees, debris and ash filled the streets.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. An area around a Southern California Edison electrical transmission tower in Eaton Canyon has become a focus of their inquiry.

Altadena Community Church was burned in the Eaton fire.

(Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times)

    Thousands remained under evacuation order.

Inside the Pasadena Convention Center, at hotels, and on friends’ and families’ couches, residents found shelter. But they remained displaced, unsure of when they could return to see their home, sort through the remains of what was left of their land or confirm their worst fears: that their house is gone.

    PALISADES

The Palisades fire started at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 7. Within two days of intense Santa Ana winds, the fire grew to more than 17,000 acres, consuming much of the Pacific Palisades — a largely affluent community and home to more than 21,000 people — and the Pacific Coast Highway between Santa Monica and Malibu.

Officials are investigating whether the fire started at Skull Rock, north of Sunset Boulevard in Pacific Palisades, by a rekindling of a New Year’s Eve fire that started with fireworks.

Tatiana Prophet, who lives in an apartment along Sunset Boulevard with her 10-year-old son Everest, got a text from her friend saying a fire had broken out along Palisades Drive, between her house and Everest’s school not far from the coast.

Prophet, who’s painfully aware of the fire history of the Palisades, was immediately worried. Then, an even more ominous warning came: the landline rang. A recorded message to evacuate.

In a rush, Prophet slammed the door behind her — without her keys, without her phone, without Everest’s beloved iPad.

As entire neighborhoods in the Palisades rushed to evacuate, the area’s major evacuation routes quickly became gridlocked.

Prophet made painfully slow progress toward PCH, eventually getting stuck at an intersection just a quarter-mile from the school.

“Then I saw the flames,” Prophet said. “They were huge, and they were just burning out of control.”

The fire had jumped from the hills nearly all the way to the coast, right along the evacuation route. Prophet whipped the car into the opposing lane and parked it on the shoulder.

“I didn’t even grab my purse,” she said. “I just started running.”

A view Jan. 9 of neighborhoods destroyed by the Palisades fire.

(Robert Gauthier / Los Angeles Times)

The fire quickly spread through the flammable invasive brushes of the Santa Monica Mountains. The blaze began rapidly engulfing the coastline and Pacific Coast Highway along both directions.

The next day, the fire had covered much of the road from Will Rogers State Beach to Carbon Beach in eastern Malibu. Burning telephone poles blocked lanes and black soot swept across the pavement, blown by the howling winds. Fire personnel told Malibu residents that the extensive fuel break left by December’s Franklin fire helped stop the fires’ progression west.

But large swaths of the highway’s homes and restaurants were already gone.

Landmarks such as Will Rogers’ western-style Palisades home and Theater Palisades were destroyed in the flames. Iconic restaurants like the Reel Inn, Cholada Thai and Moonshadows were also in the path of destruction.

“It’s sad,” said one lifelong PCH resident who used to frequent the Reel Inn and Cholada Thai and had sneaked into the evacuation zone to survey the damage Wednesday. “It feels kind of lonely, right?”

Religious institutions such as Pacific Palisades Community United Methodist Church, Corpus Christi Church, Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church and St. Matthew’s Parish School have been leveled. Palisades Charter High School also burned.

Castellammare and the end of Sunset Boulevard and Palisades Drive are some of the only areas where the Palisades fire did not reach the coast. The nearby Getty Villa took extensive measures to fend off the fire, including extensive brush clearing, an emergency staff onsite to battle the flames and help from an aerial fire crew.

Sunset Boulevard and Palisades Drive, an essential evacuation route, were the subject of intense police and fire presence on Jan. 8 and 9.

The Palisades Village, the outdoor mall owned by billionaire Rick Caruso, remains standing among the wreckage. The YMCA and the Palisades Charter Elementary and Marquez Charter Elementary schools burned down.

Prophet’s community along Sunset was one of the neighborhoods hit the hardest. Her home, still with the Christmas tree up, didn’t survive.

Now, she finds a sense of irony in the local adage about the neighborhood. “You know, they always say, ‘The rich live in Beverly Hills, the famous live in Malibu, and the lucky live in the Palisades,’” she said.

  • Los Angeles water chief given police security detail amid ‘threats’ against her, employees

The Los Angeles water chief has been given a police security detail amid “threats” against her and water employees, as wildfires swept through Southern California, two Los Angeles police sources told Fox News.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s CEO Janisse Quinones now has a 24/7 LAPD detail in response to the threats, the sources said.

One LAPD source cited the recent shooting in New York of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Quinones reportedly makes $750,000 per year.

She is facing public criticism over Los Angeles’ fire preparedness and water distribution amid the wildfires in the area.

“We can confirm that threats have been made against our employees, including incidents in the field … that occurred at a DWP facility downtown Tuesday evening,” the Department of Water and Power told Fox News.

“We take every threat and incident seriously and report them immediately to law enforcement,” the department continued. “We do not discuss security measures in place at our facilities in order to protect our employees.”

The department added: “Our employees are working tirelessly around the clock to support the City’s response, and their work is critical to those efforts. They are an essential part of the City family, they are part of this community, and there is no place in society or in our City for any threats to their safety.”

Los Angeles water chief given police security detail amid ‘threats’ against her, employees

The head of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has been granted a police security detail following reported threats against her and her employees.

General Manager of the LADWP, Marty Adams, stated that the threats were serious enough to warrant the additional security measures. The department has not disclosed the nature of the threats or who may be behind them.

Adams emphasized that the safety and well-being of the department’s employees is a top priority, and that they will not tolerate any form of intimidation or violence.

The decision to provide a police security detail for the water chief comes at a time when tensions are high within the department, with ongoing disputes over water rates, infrastructure projects, and labor issues.

The LADWP is one of the largest municipal utilities in the United States, serving over four million residents in the city of Los Angeles. The department plays a crucial role in providing clean and reliable water and power services to the community.

As the investigation into the threats continues, the LADWP is urging anyone with information to come forward and help ensure the safety of their employees and the smooth operation of their services.
