  • Real Madrid slip up against Espanyol: Injury blow for Rudiger and anger over Romero’s tackle on Mbappe

Real Madrid slipped up on Saturday night, losing a game many would have expected them to win against an Espanyol side that started the day in La Liga’s relegation zone.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side remain top of the table and one point ahead of Atletico Madrid, who they host on Saturday in a game that could have a big say in this season’s title race.

They will be without Antonio Rudiger for that game — and he is likely to miss the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Manchester City on February 11, too — after the Germany international suffered a muscle injury during the 1-0 defeat on Saturday evening.

That injury leaves Madrid with only one fit senior centre-back for a crucial part of the season (and that is David Alaba who has only just returned from an ACL injury), which has led to criticism of the board’s planning and Ancelotti’s squad management.

That wasn’t the only thing that Madrid fans were not happy about. The performance of the referee and the video assistant referee were also widely criticised, especially the decision not to send off Espanyol’s Carlos Romero for a lunging tackle on Kylian Mbappe. It was Romero who went on to score Espanyol’s 85th-minute winner.

The club were critical of the officials, too. First, on their television channel — where they called for the departure of Rafael Louzan, the president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF) who was appointed last year — and then in the post-match report they published on their website.

Mario Cortegana analyses the big talking points from a disappointing defeat for Madrid…

Madrid’s fury at the match officials

Immediately after the match finished, Real Madrid TV pointed the finger at the match officials for not sending off Romero for his foul on Mbappe (the defender was shown a yellow card).

“It’s mind-boggling — this has been going on for many years in the filthy Negreira league,” said one of the commentators, alluding to the scandal involving Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of Spanish football’s refereeing committee who owned a company that was paid a total of €7.3million (£6.4m; $7.8m) by Barcelona between 2001 and 2018.

It was in the 60th minute of the game, with the score at 0-0, when Romero lunged at Mbappe to stop a Madrid counter-attack, his studs connecting with the France forward’s knee.

“I knew Kylian is impossible to stop on the run,” Romero explained. “I tried it as best I could, it was a bit ugly, I didn’t like it, I apologised to him.”

The referee did not show Romero a red card, the VAR did not intervene, and the left-back continued to play and later proved decisive with his late goal.

‘The player who should have been sent off scored,” they lamented on RMTV. ‘This is the fate of the CTA (the technical committee of referees), this is the Spanish league, what Mr (Luis) Medina Cantalejo (president of the CTA) had planned has been fulfilled.”

Romero celebrates his late winner (Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

The club’s television channel, known for its acid criticism of the refereeing establishment on a weekly basis, also claimed that “(Carlos) Clos Gomez (head of VAR) cannot continue one more minute in charge of VAR” and that “Rafael Louzan (president of the Spanish football federation) has to leave as quickly as he arrived”.

The match report on Madrid’s website began: “Real Madrid were beaten by Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium in a match overshadowed by the performance of referee Muniz Ruiz and Iglesias Villanueva in the VAR room.”

Mbappe, for his part, said it all without saying anything. When asked by journalists in the mixed zone about the decision, he put his hand to his mouth in a zip gesture.

“The decision made by the referee and the VAR is inexplicable,” lamented a very serious Ancelotti in his press conference. “Everyone saw it. The most important thing is to watch and protect the player, fortunately nothing happened.”

Real Madrid were also upset that a Vinicius Junior goal was disallowed in the 21st minute. Their match report said: “The goal was disallowed for a prior foul by Mbappe. In the replay, it was plain to see that Pol Lozano had grabbed the Frenchman by the neck as he entered the area and that the striker then shook off the Espanyol player.”

Rudiger will be a huge miss for Madrid

Only 15 minutes had passed in the game when Rudiger was lying on the pitch in pain and there was immediate concern from his team-mates.

He tried to get up but immediately sat back down and then had to be replaced by academy graduate Raul Asensio.

The club confirmed after half-time that Rudiger was suffering discomfort in his right hamstring and he would undergo scans on the injury. After the game, Ancelotti confirmed Rudiger had a muscle injury.

Rudiger is expected to miss Madrid’s next three matches — the Copa del Rey quarter-final against Leganes on Wednesday, the Madrid derby on Saturday and the Champions League play-off first leg away to Manchester City three days after.

It will certainly be a relief for City striker Erling Haaland if Rudiger were to miss that game, given the big Norway striker has struggled in his head-to-head battles with the German. Real Madrid are the team that Haaland has faced the most in the Champions League and he is yet to score or assist a goal in any of those four matches.

Rudiger’s absence leaves Ancelotti with Alaba as his only senior centre-back available, as no one is counting on Jesus Vallejo, who has only played 10 minutes this season.

The Austria international, who was out between December 2023 and January 2025 with his anterior cruciate ligament injury, has played 70 minutes in four games since his return. However, he is yet to start a game, despite Ancelotti saying he would this week.

Without Eder Militao, who out for the remainder of the season with a similar knee injury, there are only two other alternatives for Ancelotti: Aurelien Tchouameni, a midfielder who has been criticised for his performances at centre-back, and Asencio who, in the summer, was not even among the academy’s top two choices to reinforce the first team in the case of an emergency.

This scenario points to the club’s poor planning in this position. Ancelotti was asked about this shortage of players and signings, but did not want to criticise the board: “We’ve talked about it, we’ve thought about it and we know what we have to do.”

Some inside the club do not understand why Ancelotti has not used Asencio more to give Rudiger a breather. Until yesterday, Rudiger had completed all but four games this season (playing 2,891 minutes); he turns 32 in March and has been carrying a knee problem.

Ancelotti’s Fantastic Four fail to shine

Real Madrid failed to score for the fourth match this season, but it was the first time that has happened when their galactico attack of Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, Mbappe and Vinicius Jr has started together.

Between them, those four lost possession 47 times during the match — Vinicius Jr (14), Mbappe (11), Rodrygo (11) and Bellingham (11) — and Bellingham and Mbappe were seen looking frustrated while talking together in the final minutes.

According to Opta, Real Madrid enjoyed 76 per cent possession against Espanyol, their highest tally in a La Liga away game since the 2005-06 season.

They dominated when it came to chance creation too, with xG of 1.72 compared to Espanyol’s 0.31.

But they were unsuccessful in attacking positions, and this ended a remarkable run of scoring by the first team. In the previous 14 matches they had scored at least two goals in each one, something they had not done since the 1960-1961 season.

That run is over, and now their focus will turn to Wednesday’s Copa del Rey quarter-final, and then two massive games against Atletico and Manchester City.

Real Madrid slipped up against Espanyol in a tense La Liga clash, with the match ending in a 2-2 draw. The result came as a blow to Real Madrid’s title hopes, as they missed out on a chance to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona.

Adding insult to injury, Real Madrid also suffered a blow in terms of injuries, with defender Antonio Rudiger forced off the field early in the second half with a suspected hamstring injury. Rudiger’s absence will be a major setback for Real Madrid, as they look to shore up their defense in the crucial final stretch of the season.

But perhaps the most controversial moment of the match came when Espanyol defender Cristian Romero made a reckless tackle on Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe. The challenge left Mbappe writhing in pain on the ground, and sparked anger among Real Madrid players and fans alike.

Romero’s tackle was met with calls for harsh punishment, with many labeling it as a dangerous and unnecessary challenge. The incident has once again raised questions about player safety and the need for stricter enforcement of rules to protect players from dangerous tackles.

Overall, it was a frustrating and disappointing result for Real Madrid, who will now have to regroup and focus on their upcoming matches as they look to salvage their title hopes.

  • Tom Izzo’s travel trouble anger provides valuable lesson about Spartans

EAST LANSING – After picking up a rare win at Madison Square Garden on Saturday afternoon, Tom Izzo had plans for the evening.

The Michigan State coach intended to get back on campus and attend the hockey game before preparing for the team’s next matchup. Initially expecting to be back in East Lansing about 6:30 p.m., the Spartans didn’t return until about 3:30 a.m. due to flight delays.

“As crazy as it sounds,” Izzo said on Monday, “after the game and yesterday, I learned as much about my team as I did in five games of competition.”

After topping Rutgers 81-74 on Saturday for their 12th straight win to snap Izzo’s five-game skid at MSG, the No. 7 Spartans (17-2, 8-0 Big Ten) left New York for their charter flight out of Newark. Then maintenance delays piled up both on the tarmac and at a local hotel before the wheels finally went up about 1:20 a.m.

“I didn’t have one guy complaining. … The coach was complaining, I promise you that,” Izzo said. “There were people that got a few ear loads of what I thought of the whole deal because I didn’t think it was handled right, people were lying to us about things.”

It was the team’s second straight road trip with travel problems, following delays getting in and out of Chicago earlier this month for a game at Northwestern. Senior guard Jaden Akins spent the downtime in Newark watching film and movies and getting a little sleep. The Spartans returned to the court on Sunday with an altered schedule amid a quick turnaround before hosting Minnesota (11-9, 3-6), which has won three straight, on Tuesday (8 p.m., Peacock) at the Breslin Center.

“The meetings were great, the practice we cut it short but we got at it a little bit and they were great,” Izzo said. “I think that was a sign of maturity. The head coach was immature, the players were very mature.”

Even with some private flight problems, a lot of people would gladly take Michigan State’s team travel accommodations. There will be a lot bigger challenges ahead for the Spartans, who are wildly exceeding preseason expectations. So far.

“I think we’re building a base that’s good enough to handle a lot of things,” Izzo said. “We’ll see if that’s true.”

In a recent game against Purdue, Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo was seen visibly frustrated with his team’s inability to handle the ball and commit costly turnovers. As he stomped up and down the sidelines and yelled at his players, it was clear that Izzo’s anger stemmed from the team’s lack of discipline and execution on the court.

While some may view Izzo’s outburst as a negative display of emotions, it actually provides a valuable lesson about the high standards he holds for his players and the program as a whole. Izzo’s passion and intensity are a reflection of his commitment to excellence and his desire to push his players to be their best.

The travel trouble that plagued the Spartans in that game serves as a reminder that attention to detail and focus are crucial in order to succeed at the highest level of competition. Izzo’s reaction serves as a wake-up call for his team to tighten up their game and not let mistakes go unchecked.

In the end, Izzo’s travel trouble anger may have been a tough pill to swallow in the moment, but it ultimately serves as a valuable lesson for the Spartans to learn from and improve upon as they continue their season. It’s clear that Izzo’s passion for the game and commitment to excellence will continue to drive his team towards success.

  • Immigration raid in Newark, New Jersey, spurs anger from local officials

New Jersey officials and immigrant rights advocates blasted federal immigration authorities for conducting a workplace raid on a small business in the city of Newark without a warrant.

In a news conference Friday morning, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said several agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement entered the back of the business, arrested three undocumented workers, and detained and questioned employees who are U.S. citizens.

“People were fingerprinted. Pictures of their IDs and faces were taken there,” the Democratic mayor said. “I was appalled, upset, angry that this would happen here in this state, in this country, that this would be allowed.”

While ICE confirmed it conducted “a targeted enforcement operation at a worksite” in Newark, it did not say how many people were taken into custody following the raid, saying, “This is an active investigation and, per ICE policy, we cannot discuss ongoing investigations.”

Baraka’s remarks came a day after ICE arrests spiked Thursday, signaling that President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown and his promises to carry out “the largest deportation program in American history” are starting to materialize.

ICE confirmed to NBC News that the agency arrested 538 people nationwide just on Thursday, doubling its daily arrests average. The news comes as reports of suspected immigration raids have emerged in cities like Boston.

In an interview with NBC News on Friday afternoon, Baraka confirmed that at least two other ICE workplace raids have taken place in Newark Friday. The mayor said they were still awaiting for details and locations.

The Newark raid that happened on Thursday took place at Ocean Seafood Depot, a seafood wholesaler in the city. A witness who spoke with WNJU, Telemundo’s TV station in New Jersey, said he saw armed officers wearing uniforms with ICE’s initials arrive a little before noon.

Immigration officers are generally allowed to enter the public areas of a business, even in sanctuary states like New Jersey, but require a valid warrant or the owner’s permission to access nonpublic areas. Sanctuary cities and states have local policies that limit their cooperation with immigration authorities for enforcement purposes.

An employee who was at Ocean Seafood Depot when the raid happened told NBC New York that the three colleagues ICE arrested had been working there for a few years.

“Everybody’s afraid because we don’t know if this is normal,” said the employee, who only identified herself by her first name, Eugenia.

Baraka also accused ICE of detaining both undocumented residents and U.S. citizens.

One of the detainees was a U.S. military veteran “who suffered the indignity of having the legitimacy of his military documentation questioned,” Baraka said in a statement. “Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized.”

In response, ICE said, “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement may encounter U.S. citizens while conducting field work and may request identification to establish an individual’s identity.” The agency added that this was the case during the Newark raid.

This raid marks a shift on immigration enforcement in the U.S., as the previous administration, of President Joe Biden, largely stayed away from conducting workplace raids.

Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump promised to prioritize the deportations of immigrants who have committed serious crimes. However, workplace raids mostly result in the arrests of working individuals who happen to be undocumented.

“None of these people were rapists or murderers or criminals,” Baraka said about the people picked up in the Newark raid.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin reacted to the raid in a statement saying his office regularly works with the federal government “to remove violent criminals from our communities and we will continue to do so. However, President Trump’s stated desire to deport millions of people clearly goes beyond removing dangerous criminals.”

“Some of the tactics could very well make us less safe, for instance, by making people in our communities fearful of coming forward and reporting crimes,” Platkin said. According to his office, no local or state law enforcement officials were involved in the Newark raid.

Amy Torres, executive director of the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice, said members of her organization arrived at the small business after the ICE officers had already left.

They arrived with attorneys, bilingual documents and interpreters to assist the affected workers, Torres said during the news conference. She said that most of the employees did not return to work that day.

According to the employees who stayed behind, ICE agents were “heavily armed” and entered the business with no prior announcement, blocking off entrances, exits and delivery ramps, Torres said. “They were banging down bathroom doors to make sure no one was hiding inside. And most importantly, as the mayor said, they did all of this without being able to produce a single name or a single warrant.”

Torres added: “ICE has overreached beyond what should be constitutionally allowed. That is allowing them to profile our communities while also making everyone else guilty by association.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in an X post Thursday night that the 538 people arrested by ICE so far across the nation are “illegal immigrant criminals including a suspected terrorist, four members of the Tren de Aragua gang, and several illegals convicted of sex crimes against minors.”

Leavitt also said that the Trump administration “also deported hundreds of illegal immigrant criminals via military aircraft.”

“The largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway,” she added.

At least one deportation flight landed in Guatemala on Thursday morning, according to the Guatemalan vice president’s office, which posted a video on its Instagram story. The plane in the video transported migrants who were deported from the U.S.

“Accompanying returned compatriots with humanitarian support and the assistance they need, from the national immigration authority,” the Instagram story’s caption read in Spanish.

The Guatemalan Migration Institute, a government office of the Central American nation, wrote in a news release that 80 Guatemalans returned, all of whom were adults, including 31 women, 48 men and an unaccompanied minor.

In a recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid in Newark, New Jersey, local officials are expressing anger and frustration over the harsh tactics used to detain undocumented immigrants.

The raid, which took place in a predominantly immigrant neighborhood, resulted in the arrest and detention of several individuals who were not given due process or adequate legal representation. Local officials have criticized ICE for their aggressive tactics and lack of transparency in carrying out these raids.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka condemned the raid, stating that it instilled fear and panic in the community and disrupted the lives of many innocent individuals. He called for a more humane and just approach to immigration enforcement, emphasizing the need to protect the rights of all residents, regardless of their immigration status.

Other local officials have also spoken out against the raid, with some calling for increased oversight and accountability for ICE agents operating in their communities. They have called on federal authorities to provide more information about their operations and to work collaboratively with local law enforcement to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

The immigration raid in Newark has sparked a heated debate about the treatment of undocumented immigrants and the role of federal authorities in enforcing immigration laws. As tensions continue to rise, it is clear that local officials are committed to advocating for the rights and dignity of all residents, regardless of their background.

  • Members of Chapel Hill Community Voice Anger, Disappointment Over UNC Alternative Fuel Proposal

Dozens of community members expressed frustration and disapproval at Thursday’s public hearing on a proposed modification to UNC-Chapel Hill’s air quality permit. The modification would add engineered fuel pellets to a list of resources that the university can burn in its cogeneration plant, which produces steam and electricity that powers the campus.

The plant, which sits on Cameron Avenue in the middle of a residential area, currently burns mainly coal and natural gas. The fuel pellets that would be added by this modification are engineered by Convergen Energy, a Wisconsin-based company, out of plastic and paper waste. They contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, which are known to accumulate in the environment and in the human body.

UNC Cogeneration Facility on Cameron Avenue.

The hearing was hosted by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality and was held in the Chapel Hill Town Hall. The hearing officer was Melinda Wolanin, regional supervisor from the Division of Air Quality’s Mooresville Regional Office. She was joined at the desk by director of public affairs Sam Chan and environmental justice coordinators Corey Williams and Paige Azzarita from the DEQ, as well as deputy director Taylor Hartsfield, public information officer Shawn Taylor, and permitting section chief Mark Cuilla from the DAQ.

Nearly every seat in the room was occupied, and even the overflow room began to fill up. Speakers gave three-minute speeches one after another for more than two and a half hours.

While the speakers varied widely in tone and reasoning, they all spoke against the plant and voiced concerns over its effects on the local environment and the residents of nearby communities.

“I’m just so angry that these pellets are even being considered. It’s so sad that this technology is what we are turning to now,” said Chapel Hill High School junior Lucy Safir. “I might die from cancer because of these emissions or whatever else is going to come up in my future.”

Other speakers such as Susannah Tuttle, a former UNC sustainability researcher who participated in the university’s effort to find alternate fuel sources for the plant over 20 years ago, acknowledged that the plant’s reliance on coal must be addressed, but were skeptical that plastics containing PFAS are at all better.

“I am both shocked and saddened,” she said. “Although UNC is finally, decades later, proposing a pathway to transition away from coal that risks doing significant harm, burning a pellet made from pre-consumer industrial paper and plastic waste products should not be considered an acceptable fuel source alternative, and it certainly should not fit into a climate action plan designed for the 21st century.”

Madeleine Wares was among several speakers who referenced how natural disasters are exacerbated by human behavior, specifically referring to recent events.

“With the hurricane that devastated western North Carolina last year, as well as the wildfires in LA, UNC should stand as a beacon of climate justice and sustainability, not as a model of environmental discrimination and greenwashing,” she said.

The issue of environmental discrimination was also frequently discussed, as several speakers, including UNC doctoral student Kristen Cowan, pointed out that the plant disproportionately affects minority-heavy communities.

“This is an environmental justice issue, with the burning being situated near two historically Black neighborhoods within just one mile of the plant,” she said. “This is a harm that has persisted with the coal plant due to the acceptance of environmental racism in our community.”

Matthew Spaulding, a former air quality consultant at Ramboll Environ, was the only speaker who specifically acknowledged the impossibility of shutting down the plant and the real difficulty of finding good alternative fuel options.

“While I would love to see UNC move towards greater solutions and renewable energy sources, I can appreciate the financial reality and how hard that is,” he said. “Having worked in air quality, I have a lot of faith in the permitting process, and I have a lot of faith in you, the people who will ultimately guide us to this decision.”

In a statement provided by UNC Media Relations, the university said that it will have more data available after it completes testing of the alternative fuel, and that more information can be found on its energy services website.

“We continue to explore and test new technologies and fuel options as they come to market for UNC-Chapel Hill’s cogeneration facility,” the statement read. “This latest permit modification request to test engineered fuel pellets from Convergen Energy is one step in this process.”

The comment period for this draft permit will close on Thursday, after which the Department of Environmental Quality will weigh the public comment with UNC’s request. You can submit comments by emailing daq.publiccomments@deq.nc.gov or leaving a voicemail at (919) 707-8448.

Members of the Chapel Hill community are expressing their anger and disappointment over the recent proposal by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to switch to alternative fuels. Many residents are concerned about the potential impact on air quality and public health, as well as the lack of transparency and community input in the decision-making process.

Several community groups, including Chapel Hill Climate Action Network and Clean Air Carolina, have spoken out against the proposal, calling for more information and public forums to discuss the potential consequences of the switch to alternative fuels. Residents are also questioning the university’s commitment to sustainability and environmental justice, as well as its overall accountability to the community.

As tensions continue to rise, it is clear that the Chapel Hill community is united in their opposition to the UNC alternative fuel proposal. It remains to be seen how the university will respond to these concerns and whether they will take steps to address the community’s valid grievances.
