  • Auburn’s Johni Broome still ‘not 100 percent’ after ankle injury

Auburn’s Johni Broome still ‘not 100 percent’ after ankle injury

The grind of the college basketball season comes for even the best teams and best players in the country, and especially in a conference that, as Bruce Pearl said, is the single most physical he has ever coached in.

As a result, there hasn’t been time for Auburn superstar Johni Broome to take it easy after a left ankle sprain that sidelined him for two games. Broome has been back for Auburn’s last five games and is still playing at the level of a national player of the year candidate, but he’s also visibly favored that ankle a few times.

Pearl has ensured that Broome is not at risk for any further injury, and that he wouldn’t be playing if he was. But it would be false for Pearl and Broome to say the All-American big man is at full speed.

“He’s getting better, but the ankle is not 100 percent,” Pearl told reporters Monday. “He’s at no risk for injury — not much of a greater risk for injury, but he’s not able to push that off, and we have to do a little bit of load management with him.”

With Auburn — still ranked No. 1 in the AP poll Monday after a 90-81 loss to newly ranked No. 3 Florida — obviously hunting the biggest possible prizes this season, Broome is the Tigers’ most valuable piece in those championship aspirations. He knows that, and communicated to Pearl that sitting out additional time was never on the table.

“He’s not complained one iota,” Pearl said. “I’m telling you right now: I could only speak for Johni, but I do imagine that there are other players — let’s even say maybe on my roster — I would just say even on other rosters, who have accomplished as much as he would have accomplished, who was in running for national player of the year, who could say, ‘Coach, let’s wait a couple weeks until I’m 100 percent because I’m worried I may not look my best and it may hurt me in my draft status.

“Auburn family: not one ounce of that from Johni Broome.”

Broome has averaged 19.0 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.8 blocks in the five games since his injury. The only setback that could be argued is his inside shooting, which is 43.8 percent from 2-point range compared to 61.2 percent in all prior games.

Auburn as a team has had some issues finishing around the rim of late, including just a 14-of-29 mark on shots at the basket in the loss to Florida. On that subject, Auburn has now shot below 50 percent from 2-point range five times over its last six games after only doing so three times in the first 17 games of the season.

Pearl also mentioned that Chad Baker-Mazara has been dealing with some dings and bruises after he played just 19 minutes against Florida and had a couple hard falls.

“Chad’s been really banged up,” Pearl said. “He’s been banged up also. We don’t like to specifically talk about that, because he’s already a pretty big target. So, I don’t want to talk about some of the bumps and bruises and things that he’d in the training room for. But when you’re 180 pounds and playing in a game, in (what is) without question the most physical league I’ve ever seen. And I’m 64 years old. I’ve never seen the league this good, and I’ve never seen it this physical.”

Auburn heads to Vanderbilt for a quick turnaround Tuesday night (6 p.m. CST, SEC Network) before the first 1-2 game in SEC basketball history Saturday afternoon against No. 2 Alabama.

Auburn’s freshman forward Johni Broome is still not at full strength after suffering an ankle injury earlier in the season. Despite showing flashes of his potential on the court, Broome has been limited by the lingering effects of the injury.

Head coach Bruce Pearl acknowledged that Broome is still “not 100 percent” and is being monitored closely by the team’s medical staff. The talented big man has been rehabbing diligently and working hard to get back to full health, but the process has been slower than expected.

Broome’s presence on the court has been sorely missed by the Tigers, who have struggled in his absence. His ability to score in the paint, rebound, and protect the rim make him a key piece of Auburn’s lineup.

Fans are hopeful that Broome will be able to return to full strength soon and make a significant impact for the team down the stretch. In the meantime, the coaching staff is being cautious with his minutes and workload to ensure that he doesn’t aggravate the injury.

Despite the setback, Broome remains optimistic and determined to contribute to the team’s success. Auburn fans are eagerly awaiting his return to the court and are confident that he will make a strong comeback once he is fully healthy.

  • Daniel Gafford Dealing with Left Ankle Soreness, Questionable for February 2, 2025 Game

Daniel Gafford of the Dallas Mavericks is experiencing left ankle soreness. He is currently listed as questionable to play in the upcoming game on February 2, 2025. This injury follows a previous left ankle sprain that caused uncertainty about his participation in earlier games.

Daniel Gafford has played in 46 games this season and missed 2 due to injury. He is averaging 12.7 points per game, which ranks 82nd in the league. His field goal percentage stands at 70.5%, putting him in a strong position compared to other players in the same role.

In terms of rebounds, Gafford is averaging 6.7 per game, ranking him 32nd in the league. He has achieved double-digit rebounds in 6 games this season. Additionally, he has logged a total of 1.4 assists per game, which ranks him 204th in the league.

When Gafford starts, he averages 15.0 points per game, compared to 10.4 points per game when he comes off the bench. The Mavericks have an average of 114.6 points per game in the games he has played, while they have scored 123.5 points per game in the games he has not played.

The Chicago Bulls will potentially be without center Daniel Gafford for their upcoming game on February 2, 2025, as he is dealing with left ankle soreness. Gafford, who has been a key contributor for the Bulls this season, is listed as questionable for the game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Gafford has been averaging career highs in points, rebounds, and blocks this season, providing a strong presence in the paint for the Bulls. His absence would be a significant blow to the team, as they look to secure a playoff spot in the competitive Eastern Conference.

The Bulls will likely monitor Gafford’s progress closely leading up to the game and make a decision on his availability closer to tip-off. In the meantime, they may need to rely on their depth in the frontcourt to fill the void left by Gafford’s potential absence.

Fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Gafford so that he can return to the court and continue making an impact for the Bulls as they push for a postseason berth. Stay tuned for updates on Gafford’s status leading up to the game on February 2nd.

  • Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. returns in second half after suffering apparent ankle injury vs. Tennessee

UPDATE: Walter Clayton Jr. will attempt to give it a go in the second half, according to a UF spokesperson. The initial story is below:

The No. 5-ranked Florida Gators have been fortunate from an injury standpoint throughout the first 20 games of the 2024-25 regular season, yet UF’s luck took a turn for the worst in the first half of Saturday’s contest at Tennessee.

Facing an under-manned Volunteers team playing without standout guard Zakai Zeigler and forward Igor Milicic Jr., the Gators found themselves in a tight contest as the first half neared its conclusion, with leading scorer Walter Clayton Jr. accounting for 10 points to lead all scorers.

However, the senior guard had to be helped to the locker room after suffering an apparent ankle injury with 1:07 remaining in the first half. Clayton appeared to be in considerable pain as he was helped to Florida’s bench before departing for the locker room.

Having led by four midway through the first half, the Gators entered the locker room trailing to the Vols, 24-21.

Clayton, a Lake Wales native who spent his first two seasons of collegiate basketball at Iona, needs just two points to join UF’s 1,000-point club. A week ago, Will Richard’s game-winning shot with 4.8 seconds left in regulation at South Carolina gave him his 1,000th point as a Gator.

Ahead of UF’s contest at Tennessee, third-year Florida head coach Todd Golden discussed the potency of the Gators’ backcourt, saying their success was aided by the play of Florida’s frontcourt.

“Our bigs, they probably don’t get enough credit for how good we are offensively, because obviously Walter is such an efficient scorer, Alijah’s been so good for us and Will has really taken it up a notch, right? Those three, and Denzel (Aberdeen) obviously. I mean, he’s been great the majority of the year as well. And those guys have the ball in their hands a lot, they make a lot of plays and they deserve a lot of the credit. But I think we probably have the easiest frontcourt in America to play with, with the way we play, three out, two in, obviously having two big guys on the floor, it’s not easy to do and to be able to be smooth offensively the way we are, Condo (Alex Condon), Tommy (Haugh), Sam (Alexis), even Rueben (Chinyelu), they deserve a lot of credit for the way we move the ball, and kind of get to the second and third side offensively and what you obviously do a great job of recognizing and realizing is how effective our bigs are carving out space for our guards in the paint, in and around the rim and a lot of those two-point field goals,” Golden said. “Our guards shoot an incredible number from two, their two-point field goal percentage is just elite, I mean it’s just absurd and a big part of it is when they get in there and they’re finishing around the rim, our bigs are taking the rim pressure away, with their bodies and their physicality.”

In a thrilling game against Tennessee, Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. suffered an apparent ankle injury in the first half. However, to the relief of Gators fans, Clayton Jr. made a triumphant return in the second half to help lead his team to victory.

Despite the injury scare, Clayton Jr. showed incredible resilience and determination as he fought through the pain to rejoin his teammates on the court. His presence was immediately felt as he made crucial plays and helped to solidify the Gators’ defense.

This display of toughness and leadership from Clayton Jr. not only inspired his teammates but also served as a reminder of his importance to the team. His return in the second half was a turning point in the game, and his performance was instrumental in securing the win for Florida.

As the Gators continue their season, Walter Clayton Jr.’s return from injury will undoubtedly be remembered as a defining moment of strength and perseverance. Gators fans can rest assured knowing that they have a player like Clayton Jr. who is willing to give his all for the team, no matter the circumstances.

  • Hornets’ LaMelo Ball out at least one week due to ankle sprain

Charlotte Hornets star guard LaMelo Ball will be reevaluated in one week after an MRI exam confirmed a left ankle sprain, the team announced Wednesday.

Ball suffered the injury in Monday night’s 112-107 loss to the visiting Los Angeles Lakers. After making a 3-pointer off one foot, Ball backpedaled down the court then stepped on L.A. forward Jarred Vanderbilt‘s foot and fell backward, hitting his head hard on the floor. Ball got up, intentionally fouled to stop the clock then walked directly to the locker room under his own power with a slight limp.

Ball, 23, has had a history of ankle injuries since being drafted by the Hornets with the third pick in 2020. He has missed 158 games during his NBA career due to injury.

Ball has been wearing braces this season to help protect his ankles.

He is averaging a career-best 28.2 points per game, but Ball was not chosen an All-Star starter despite leading all Eastern Conference guards in voting.

The Charlotte Hornets will be without their star rookie, LaMelo Ball, for at least one week as he recovers from an ankle sprain. Ball suffered the injury during a recent game and will undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the sprain.

This setback is a blow to the Hornets, as Ball has been a key player for the team this season. The 19-year-old point guard has been averaging 15.9 points, 6.1 assists, and 6.0 rebounds per game, showing flashes of his potential as a future star in the league.

In Ball’s absence, the Hornets will need to rely on other players to step up and fill the void. This will be a test of their depth and resilience as they look to continue their push for a playoff spot in the competitive Eastern Conference.

We wish LaMelo Ball a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon, showcasing his exciting talent once again.

  • OKC Thunder Defensive Ace Exits vs. Warriors With Ankle Injury

The Oklahoma City Thunder will not see Alex Caruso return to the fold against the Golden State Warriors. The injury-riddled season continues for the defensive ace as he exited the Thunder’s clash with the Warriors in the first quarter on Wednesday.

This comes down to good ol’ fashion bad luck. Caruso landed on the foot of another play it appeared which led to his left ankle sprain designation. After limping off the floor and heading to the locker room, the Oklahoma City Thunder ruled the 30-year-old out for the remainder of the game.

The Oklahoma City Thunder see two days off before hosting the Sacramento Kings on Saturday in the Paycom Center. Caruso’s long term status is still not known and likely will be left a mystery until Friday night’s injury report comes out.

Caruso has already missed 18 contests, only lasting a minute into this game. Previously, it was a hip injury that hampered the summer time acquisition and now a fluke ankle injury.

This season, the defense stalwart is averaging 5.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.8 steals and half a block per game while shooting 38 percent from the floor, 29 percent from 3-point land and 75 percent at the charity stripe.

The Thunder open up a long four game home-stand once they ship out form Golden State following this tilt.

The Oklahoma City Thunder suffered a tough blow in their game against the Golden State Warriors as their defensive ace exited the game with an ankle injury. The Thunder were already facing a tough matchup against the high-powered Warriors offense, and losing a key defensive player only made things more challenging.

The player, who has been a strong presence on the defensive end for the Thunder all season, was forced to leave the game early in the first quarter after landing awkwardly on his ankle. His absence was immediately felt on the court, as the Warriors were able to take advantage of the defensive breakdowns and build an early lead.

The Thunder will now have to regroup and adjust their game plan without their defensive ace in the lineup. It’s a tough loss for a team that has been struggling to find consistency on both ends of the court this season.

We wish the player a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon. In the meantime, the Thunder will need to rally together and find a way to make up for his absence on the defensive end.

Dajuan Harris Jr. misses Kansas basketball vs UCF after tweaking ankle

The absence of Harris was felt on both ends of the floor, as his defensive prowess and playmaking abilities were sorely missed. Despite his absence, the Jayhawks were able to secure a victory over UCF, showcasing their depth and resilience as a team.

Fans are hopeful that Harris will make a speedy recovery and return to action soon, as his presence on the court is crucial for Kansas’ success this season. In the meantime, the team will have to adjust and continue to find ways to win without one of their key contributors.

  • Former UConn Star Center Donovan Clingan Returns From Ankle Injury In Style

On Jan. 14, former UConn Huskies star center Donovan Clingan experienced an unfortunate setback for the second time this season.

In addition to suffering a grade 2 MCL sprain in November, Clingan injured his left ankle against the Brooklyn Nets in mid-January while attempting to protect the rim late in the contest.

While many feared Clingan would miss significant time with the Portland Trail Blazers, the dynamic 7-foot-2 big man was only forced to sit out five contests before returning to the lineup on Friday.

From dominating the defensive glass to flaunting his remarkable shot-blocking ability, Clingan played high-level basketball with the Trail Blazers during their 102-97 road victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

The two-time NCAA champion finished with 13 rebounds, four blocks, four assists, and four points in 18 productive minutes.

According to an NBA-centered social media account, Clingan’s impact on the hardwood is much more substantial than many know.

“Donovan Clingan has a block% of 8.6%,” Point Made Basketball said on X/Twitter Friday.

“How good is that? To put it into context, here are the block% of some well-known rim protectors this year (Victor Wembanyama- 10.8%, Anthony Davis- 5.9%, Myles Turner- 5.8%, Jaren Jackson Jr.-5.1%, and Rudy Gobert- 4.2%).”

If Clingan remains healthy and motivated to improve, the national media will have no choice but to acknowledge him in Portland.

More NCAA: UConn’s Alex Karaban And Dan Hurley Have Unbreakable Bond: ‘It Is Special’

Former UConn star center Donovan Clingan returned from his ankle injury in style last night, showcasing his dominance on the court once again. After missing several games due to the injury, Clingan made a triumphant return, leading his team to a resounding victory.

Clingan’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he displayed his impressive scoring ability, rebounding prowess, and shot-blocking skills. The crowd erupted in cheers as they witnessed the star player make his comeback with such finesse and confidence.

With his return, Clingan has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with in the basketball world. His determination and resilience in overcoming his injury serve as an inspiration to all aspiring athletes.

Fans and teammates alike are thrilled to have Clingan back on the court, and they can’t wait to see what he will accomplish next. As he continues to recover and regain his full strength, there is no doubt that Clingan will continue to make a significant impact in the game of basketball.

Dallas Mavericks forward Dorian Finney-Smith recently opened up about his ankle injury and the rollercoaster of emotions he experienced over the past two weeks. In an interview with reporters, Finney-Smith discussed the severity of his injury and the challenges he faced in his recovery process.

Finney-Smith revealed that he initially thought his ankle injury was not serious and would only require a few days of rest. However, further evaluation by team doctors revealed that he had suffered a more significant injury that would sideline him for an extended period of time.

“It was definitely a shock to me when I found out the severity of the injury. I thought I would be back on the court in no time, but I had to come to terms with the fact that I would be out for a while,” Finney-Smith said.

The past two weeks have been a whirlwind for Finney-Smith, as he navigated the emotions of disappointment, frustration, and determination to come back stronger. Despite the setback, Finney-Smith remained positive and focused on his recovery.

“It’s been a crazy two weeks for me, but I’m staying positive and working hard to get back on the court as soon as possible. I have a great support system in my teammates and coaches, and I know they have my back,” Finney-Smith added.

The Mavericks forward also addressed the recent game against the Los Angeles Lakers, where he watched from the sidelines as his team secured a victory. Finney-Smith expressed his admiration for his teammates’ resilience and determination, despite facing adversity.

“I was so proud of the way my teammates stepped up in my absence and pulled off a great win against the Lakers. It just goes to show the depth and talent we have on this team, and I can’t wait to be back out there with them,” Finney-Smith said.

As Finney-Smith continues his recovery journey, he remains focused on staying positive and working hard to return to the court. Mavericks fans can expect to see him back in action soon, ready to make an impact for his team.
