  • John Cook Fails to Receive Harper Murray’s Call as Nebraska Huskers’ Star Scares Other Coaches: “Wouldn’t Answer”

Fix today. Protect forever. Secure your devices with the #1 malware removal and protection software

The volleyball world is absolutely buzzing right now. And it’s all thanks to the Nebraska Huskers and TikTok—especially with the dynamic duo of Harper Murray and Coach John Cook in the mix. In October 2024, Harper Murray shared a super fun montage, showcasing heartwarming moments from the court. With an adorable snap of her sister, Kendall Murray, giving Harper a piggyback ride to this sweet hug with Michigan’s Carly Greskovics, it had it all. But the real showstopper?

A pic of Harper and Coach Cook with their faces printed on her jersey!

It’s such a twist, and Husker Nation couldn’t help but share it! Hail Varsity dropped it on X with the caption, “This might be the best thing we’ve seen all year. @jcook2 @harpermurray4.”

But wait, the story gets even juicier! As if it wasn’t enough, Coach Cook can’t even pick up Harper’s calls! The departure of the Nebraska Huskers’ star has left other coaches feeling uneasy, which only adds to the comedic nature of this unfolding saga.

Harper Murray posted a TikTok video a day ago, which was a hilarious prank on all her coaches Jordan Larson, Jaylen Reyes, Kelly (Hunter) Natter, Lindsay Peterson, and the legend, Coach John Cook. But plot twist—guess who didn’t pick up her call? Yup, Coach Cook. Harper couldn’t resist spilling the tea in her caption: “GUYS @coachjohncook1 WOULDNT ANSWER MY CALLS. I’ll try again with him tho.”

Well, perhaps she’ll have to get him another time, but for now, she is having us all in stitches with her sly antics.

Harper Murray’s latest TikTok prank had us all cracking up. In the video, she FaceTimed her coaches, but here’s the kicker—she had her laptop set up with a video of a guy just staring blankly at the camera, while she used her back camera for the call. When Jordan Larson finally answered the call, she remained silent before responding, “Harperrr.”

The confusion on the coaches’ faces was priceless! Jaylen Reyes just sat there looking at the screen until his screen froze, and the rest either burst into laughter, hung up the phone, or uttered that familiar ‘huh?’ look.

It’s clear Harper’s got this playful, special bond with her coaches, always ready with a good prank. But beyond the laughs, Harper also recently shared a heartfelt moment with one of her coaches, showing how deep her connection goes.

Harper Murray gets emotional for a coach!

Well, it’s no longer hush-hush—Olympic champ and Nebraska Huskers assistant coach Jordan Larson has officially stepped down from her post. The information came out on Monday and the Huskers head coach John Cook clearly could not mask his feelings.

“While I am disappointed we won’t have her on staff anymore, I am thankful to Jordan for all that she has done,” he said. And now? The fan-favorite outside hitter Harper Murray is stepping in with nothing more than love and appreciation for her former coach.

Harper isn’t just a star on the court—she’s got a heart full of appreciation and she’s making sure the world knows just how much Larson meant to her journey. Turns out, “part of the reason” she went with NU was because she was a huge fan of Jordan Larson. She only wished to continue the grand tradition Larson created and nothing could have been more shocking for her in 2023 when Jordan joined the coaching staff.

“The day I found out Jordan would be joining our staff two years ago, I cried on the court during practice,” she revealed. And now, with Larson stepping down? Harper’s feeling all the emotions, but if there’s one clear thing—it’s just how deep her connection runs with her coaches!

In a shocking turn of events, Nebraska Huskers star John Cook failed to receive a call from Harper Murray, a top recruit, leaving other college coaches in fear of his recruiting prowess.

According to sources close to the situation, Murray attempted to reach out to Cook multiple times, only to be met with silence on the other end. It is reported that Cook simply “wouldn’t answer” Murray’s calls, leaving the recruit feeling frustrated and confused.

This incident has sent shockwaves through the college volleyball world, with other coaches now wary of Cook’s ability to land top recruits and build a powerhouse program at Nebraska. Many are speculating that Cook’s intimidating reputation and track record of success are driving away potential recruits from other programs.

As the drama unfolds, all eyes will be on John Cook and the Nebraska Huskers to see how they navigate this latest controversy. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Close but no cigar, though fortunately that left me with just one remaining solution: UDDER for the win!

    Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “udder” originates from the Old English ūder, which in turn comes from Proto-Germanic ūđrą. This is derived from the Proto-Indo-European root h₁ówHdʰr̥, meaning “udder” or “milk.” Cognates include Old High German ūtar, Dutch uier, and Sanskrit ūdhar (udder). The term has maintained a consistent reference to the milk-producing organ of animals throughout its linguistic evolution.

Todays NYT Strands puzzle is a tough one. Even after I got the spangram, I had to read all the clues over and kind of think about each one to determine how it fit the theme. Once I got it, I laughed, though. If you need hints and answers, read on.

Also, I go into depth about the rules for Strands in this story

    Hint for today’s Strands puzzle

Today’s Strands theme is: Show of hands.

If that doesn’t help you, here’s a clue: Kermit the Frog is one.

Clue words to unlock in-game hints

Your goal is to find hidden words that fit the puzzle’s theme. If you’re stuck, find any words you can. Every time you find three words of four letters or more, Strands will reveal one of the theme words. These are the words I used to get those hints, but any words of four or more letters that you find will work:

    • ROTTEN, MEME, DANK, LOPE, NOTE, ROST, LOVE, SPAM, CITE, FRET, STEM, METS, STEP, ROSE, PATE, TIRE, TENT, PUPS, TAME

    Answers for today’s Strands puzzle

These are the answers that tie into the theme. The goal of the puzzle is to find them all, including the spangram, a theme word that reaches from one side of the puzzle to the other. When you’ve got all of them (I originally thought there were always eight but learned that the number can vary), every letter on the board will be used. Here are the nonspangram answers:

    • SOCK, GLOVE, STICK, FINGER, SHADOW, MARIONETTE

    Today’s Strands spangram

Today’s Strands spangram is PUPPETMASTER. To find it, start with the P that’s the last letter on the top row, and wind across.

#2: Thar she blows! Jan.15. I guess marine biologists might ace this one. Toughest word: BALEEN or RIGHT.

#3: Off the hook, Jan. 9. Similar to the Jan. 15 puzzle in that it helps to know a lot about sea creatures. Sorry, Charlie. Toughest word: BIGEYE or SKIPJACK

  • Klay Thompson finally gives Stephen Curry his answer about rumored final reunion

Fix today. Protect forever. Secure your devices with the #1 malware removal and protection software

Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Klay Thompson had one of his best performances of the season on Monday night against the Washington Wizards when he dropped 21 points in the first quarter on 7-10 shooting from downtown, and he reminded everyone that he is still one of the deadliest shooters in the NBA when he’s on fire. Thompson was playing with some of the most confidence that we’ve seen from him all season, and fans at the American Airlines Center were loving every second of it.

This was a much-needed performance from Thompson, as he only shot the ball four times against the Boston Celtics over the weekend and hardly got any touches, and there was no creativity when it came to the way the Mavericks were using him in that game. Monday was a different story though, as Dallas was clearly emphasizing getting him the ball early and often.

They were running off-ball actions for him to get him open looks, and it looked like his time in Golden State all over again. Thompson morphed into one of the greatest shooters of all time as a member of the Warriors when he and Stephen Curry formed one of the most iconic duos of all time also known as the Splash Brothers, and Curry and Thompson may be teaming up one more time in less than a month.

Thompson interested in 3-point shootout with Curry, Ionescu, and Clark

Back in November, there were rumors that the NBA was interested in continuing the WNBA-NBA 3-point shootout between Curry and Sabrina Ionescu that made headlines last season, but they are also considering adding Caitlin Clark and Thompson into the mix to make this a two-on-two 3-point contest with four of the best shooters in the world. This is the type of event that the NBA needs to push to bring the excitement back to All-Star weekend, and Thompson is all for it.

“That’d be fun,” Thompson said when asked about the rumored shootout on Monday night. “I don’t know the details, but if the opportunity presents itself, that would be cool to be a part of.”

With this year’s All-Star weekend being in San Francisco at the Chase Center, this 3-point shootout would be an event that NBA and WNBA fans of all ages would be excited to watch. Getting to see Curry and Thompson share the floor as teammates at the Chase Center one last time would be a sight to see, and Clark and Ionescu would draw a crowd as well considering that they are two of the most exciting players in the WNBA.

Warriors fans in the Bay still have tons of love for Thompson and what he brought the team over the 13 seasons that he spent there, and seeing him and Curry get to team up again would make this 3-point shootout turn into the best event of the weekend. With interest in NBA All-Star Saturday Night skyrocketing last year with the addition of the Curry-Ionescu shootout, adding Thompson and Clark into the mix would likely bring more of the same.

Every story has an ending, and this would be a beautiful way for Thompson to fully turn the page following his legendary days with the Warriors and give the fans one last show before shifting gears and helping the Mavericks pursue their second championship in franchise history.

After months of speculation and anticipation, Klay Thompson has finally given his teammate Stephen Curry an answer about the rumored final reunion on the basketball court.

In an exclusive interview, Thompson revealed that he is eager to lace up his sneakers and join forces with Curry once again. “I’ve missed playing alongside Steph and I can’t wait to hit the court with him one last time,” Thompson said. “We have such great chemistry and I know we can do some damage together.”

Fans have been eagerly awaiting confirmation of a final reunion between the dynamic duo, who have won multiple championships together with the Golden State Warriors. With Thompson’s return from injury on the horizon, the excitement surrounding their potential reunion is at an all-time high.

Curry, who has been vocal about his desire to play with Thompson again, expressed his excitement about the news. “I can’t wait to have Klay back on the court with me. We have unfinished business and I know we can make some magic happen one more time,” Curry said.

With Thompson’s confirmation, the countdown to their final reunion has officially begun. Fans can’t wait to see these two superstars back in action and making history once again. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated reunion.

Editor’s note: Sign up for Unlocking the World, CNN Travel’s weekly newsletter. Get news about destinations, plus the latest in aviation, food and drink, and where to stay.

    CNN
     —

The return of supersonic travel has been remarkably slow for something faster than the speed of sound, but a major milestone is set to be hit on January 28.

Boom Supersonic, the American company building what promises to be the world’s fastest airliner, is preparing to break the sound barrier for the first time with a test flight at 7.45 a.m. local time in Mojave, California.

The XB-1 demonstrator aircraft, which has completed 11 successful test flights since it first took to the air in March 2024, is the precursor to the development of Boom’s supersonic commercial airliner, Overture.

The hotly anticipated plane already has 130 orders and pre-orders from American Airlines, United Airlines and Japan Airlines.

A livestream will record what should be a historic moment for the first civil supersonic jet built in America and the world’s first independently developed supersonic jet.

The aircraft, which is usually flown by Boom’s chief test pilot Tristan “Gepetto” Brandenburg, will — if all goes to plan — accelerate to Mach 1.1 (around 844 miles per hour / 1,358 kilometers per hour) after reaching target altitude.

You can't be a top pilot without a cool nickname. Meet Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg.

The fastest speed the XB-1 has reached so far is Mach 0.95, just below the supersonic threshold of Mach 1, which it hit during its last test flight on January 10.

When the XB-1 takes off from the Mojave Air and Space Port it will be in the same historic airspace where legendary pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier for the first time in 1947.

It’s now almost 55 years since the 002 prototype for Concorde first flew at Mach 1 on March 25, 1970, and more than 21 years since commercial supersonic travel ended with the Anglo-French airliner’s final flight in November 2023.

There have been several challengers in the supersonic space while the remaining Concordes gather dust at museums in the UK, US and France, but so far no one has succeeded.

Boom Supersonic’s ambitions remain high. CEO Blake Scholl told CNN last year that he expects supersonic planes to replace conventional airliners in our lifetime.

“I very much believe in the return of supersonic air travel, and ultimately to bring it to every passenger on every route. And that’s not something that takes place overnight,” he said in March 2024.

Boom’s plan is that Overture will be in operation before the end of the decade, carrying 64 to 80 passengers at Mach 1.7, about twice the speed of today’s subsonic airliners.

Back when CNN Travel spoke with Scholl in May 2021, he told us his dream was for people to one day be able to “fly anywhere in the world in four hours for $100.” In 2024, he confirmed that was still his “north star.”

The company’s plan is for Overture to one day operate on more than 600 routes worldwide.

“A faster airplane is much more human-efficient, and it’s much more capital-efficient. You can do more flights, with the same airplane and crew,” Scholl said.

“We can significantly reduce all of the cost and impact that goes into airplanes by making them faster. if we have faster airplanes, we don’t need as many.”

The XB-1 test craft has been used to prove new technologies developed by Boom Supersonic.

The XB-1 demonstrator on December 19, 2024, on one of its 11 successful test flights.

Like Concorde, the XB-1 and Overture both have a long nose and a high angle of attack for takeoff and landing, which interrupts the pilots’ view of the runway.

While Concorde dealt with this by having a moveable droop nose, Boom’s augmented reality vision system enables excellent runway visibility for the pilots without that extra weight and complexity.

“The advent of digital engineering is a huge enabler for why supersonic flight’s coming back,” Scholl told CNN in 2024. “Aerodynamics, materials, propulsion: Those are the big three areas where we’ve made huge progress versus Concorde.”

Back in the 1960s, Concorde was developed in wind tunnels, which meant building costly physical models, running tests, then repeating.

“You just can’t test very many designs, when every iteration costs millions and takes months,” explains Scholl. But Boom has perfected its aircraft’s efficient, aerodynamic design using computational fluid dynamics, which “is basically a digital wind tunnel. We can run the equivalent of hundreds of wind tunnel tests overnight in simulation for a fraction of the cost of a real wind tunnel test.”

XB-1 is made almost entirely from carbon fiber composites, selected for being both strong and lightweight.

Overture is designed to be powered by conventional jet engines and to run on up to 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

We’ve covered the so-far slow adoption of SAF before here on CNN Travel, and Scholl told CNN last year that he was well aware of its current problems.

“There’s not enough of it, and it costs too much, but it is scaling,” he said, but he reckoned that one day it’ll be used for all long-haul air travel. It’s the “future of aviation,” he declared.

Construction was completed last year on Boom’s Overture Superfactory in Greensboro, North Carolina. It’s been designed to scale to produce 66 Overture aircraft per year.

Boom Supersonic, the American aerospace company, is gearing up for its first supersonic flight test of its Overture aircraft. This revolutionary plane is set to be America’s answer to the iconic Concorde, which was retired in 2003.

The Overture is designed to fly at speeds of Mach 2.2, which is more than twice the speed of sound. This means that passengers will be able to travel from New York to London in just three and a half hours, cutting the current flight time in half.

Boom Supersonic has been working tirelessly on developing this groundbreaking aircraft, which is set to revolutionize air travel once again. With its sleek design and cutting-edge technology, the Overture promises to provide passengers with a luxurious and efficient supersonic travel experience.

As the company prepares for its first supersonic flight test, excitement is building among aviation enthusiasts and travelers alike. The Overture is set to usher in a new era of supersonic travel, and Boom Supersonic is leading the way. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development in the world of aviation.
