Hey, folks! Today’s NYT Strands hints, spangram and answers for Sunday, January 19 are coming right up.

How To Play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s available on the NYT website and in the NYT Games app alongside the likes of Wordle and Connections (which we also cover in daily guides at Forbes Gaming).

There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.

You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links at least two sides of the board, but it may not start or end there. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it’s possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.

If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you’ll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.

Be warned: You’ll need to be on your toes. Sometimes you’ll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes.

Here’s what the completed grid looks like…

Not too difficult a theme clue to decipher. “X” on the grid caught my eye immediately. So I found INBOX, DRAFTS and SPAM pretty quickly. “Email” was quite clearly part of the spangram, but I couldn’t figure out how.

STARRED and SENT helped narrow things down a little, leaving three words to find. TRASH and SNOOZED then gave me the remaining spangram letters, but it took me a second to figure out “label.”

I used no hints and the spangram was the eighth theme word I found.

NYT Connections Sports Edition hints and answers for January 18: Tips to solve Connections #117

Connections: Sports Edition is a new version of the popular New York Times word game that seeks to test the knowledge of sports fans.

Like the original Connections, the game is all about finding the “common threads between words.” And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier—so we’ve served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

If you just want to be told today’s puzzle, you can jump to the end of this article for the latest Connections solution. But if you’d rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

What is Connections Sports Edition?

The NYT‘s latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication’s sports coverage. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.


Mashable Games

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there’s only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Hey, folks! Welcome to the weekend. I hope you’ve got a truly excellent one lined up. I’m planning to get a few things done around my place that I’ve been putting off, but of course I’ll make plenty of time to relax and fit in a workout or two.

Also, how about that Nintendo Switch 2, huh? Not too many surprises in the announcement, given all of the leaks and rumors that have been flying around. I have no doubt that I’ll be picking one up on launch day and eventually ignoring it to play games on my PC or PS5 or Xbox or Steam Deck instead.

Before we get going, I’ve started a discussion group for Connections and this column on Discord. You can chat about each game (and other topics) with me and other folks. I’m always interested to find out how other people approach the game, so join us! It’s fun.

It’s also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare(!) occasions that I mess something up.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Saturday, January 18, are coming right up.

How To Play Connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT website or Games app.

You’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed.

Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find my hints for each grid via Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query.

Three perfect games in a row, and my overall streak is up to six. Here’s how I fared:

I found this slightly tougher than some other games from the last few days, but it’s been a relatively easy week overall. I’m starting to dread what tomorrow might bring. We’re not too far away from game 600 either.

In any case, the yellows were very straightforward here. Once I saw ALBUM and ARTIST close together, it only took a moment to figure out the blues (despite the potential red herrings between LABEL and STICKER).

I had a little trouble with the greens and purples. SPINE, PAGE and CORNER could have gone together as parts of a book. But once I realized SPINE, SPUR and THORN had to be aligned, I figured out that STICKER should go with them, even though I haven’t heard that word used in this context before.

Still, I submitted the purples before the greens. I figured out the connection there, as those are all common expressions.

P.S. My clue for the blues reminded me of one of my favorite songs of the ‘90s. “Brimful of Asha” by Cornershop was a very good track already, but Fatboy Slim’s remix elevated it to new heights. I’m going to be dancing to this all day:

For once, I figured out the spangram immediately here. I found the two words at the bottom, then HOOK (which kind of resembled the shape of a hook) before the rest of the words. Captain Planet is my personal favorite.

Will There Be An ‘XO, Kitty’ Season 3? That Cliffhanger Ending Needs Answers

Season 2 of XO, Kitty is officially streaming on Netflix, and if you’ve already powered through all eight episodes, you’re probably dying to know what’s next — especially after that romantic cliffhanger in the finale. (Spoiler alert: If you haven’t finished Season 2 yet, proceed with caution.)

XO, Kitty is a spinoff of Netflix’s beloved rom-com trilogy To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, where fans were first introduced to Kitty Song Covey (Anna Cathcart), Lara Jean’s younger sister who set the story in motion by mailing the love letters to her crushes. Now, Kitty is on her own journey of love and self-discovery as a student at the Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS), while also hoping to uncover more about her late mother’s past.

Season 2 dropped on Jan. 16, and the eight-episode second chapter is packed with even more drama than the first. Kitty found herself tangled in another messy love triangle, all while navigating her queer identity and crush on her friend Yuri. On top of that, she set out to uncover clues about Simon — a mysterious guy her mom used to write to back when she was at KISS.

Kitty eventually learns that Simon isn’t a romantic interest of her mom’s, but he’s actually her mom’s cousin. Neither Kitty nor her mom knew they still had cousins in South Korea. Before her mom passed away, she and Simon were working to reunite their mothers. Now, Kitty is determined to finish what her mom started, with help from her older sister, Margot Song Covey, who returns in Season 2. (There’s also a brief cameo from To All the Boys hearttrob Peter Kavinsky.)

While Kitty got major answers about her family this season, her love life? Total chaos. Things with Min Ho went from sworn enemies to a slow-burn vibe, but not without some drama. Min Ho started dating Stella, which gave him and Kitty space to become friends. That is, until Kitty discovered Stella’s real name is Esther and she’s only at KISS to ruin Min Ho’s dad for humiliating her in a singing competition years ago.

As for Yuri, she’s pretty much off the table romantically. She and Kitty shared a kiss, but Yuri quickly shut it down, calling it a mistake and confessing she’s in love with Juliana. With Yuri out of the picture, it seemed like Kitty and Min Ho were finally about to get their moment in the Season 2 finale. But nope — fans were left hanging again, leaving everyone wondering what’s next in a potential third season.

Is There Going To Be An XO, Kitty Season 3?

Netflix hasn’t renewed XO, Kitty for a third season yet. Showrunner Jessica O’Toole hinted to Tudum that Kitty’s journey at KISS is far from over, especially with everything she learned about her extended family in Season 2.

“Yeah, she wants to come back,” O’Toole told the streamer. “And now that she knows she has a cousin, now that she’s got this great aunt, there you go. She’s got family there.” Principal Lee (Michael K. Lee) also renewed Kitty’s scholarship, so she’s all set to return to KISS next year if Netflix gives O’Toole the green light.

In 2023, during the Hollywood strikes, Netflix renewed XO, Kitty for a second season less than a month after its debut. Fans might have to wait a few weeks, or possibly even months, to find out if the show will return for a third season. The streamer will likely review viewership numbers in the coming weeks. (The good news? As of Jan. 17, XO, Kitty is the No. 1 show in the U.S.)

What Could XO, Kitty Season 3 Be About?

The third season of XO, Kitty will likely follow Kitty’s senior year at KISS. The core cast will presumably return for another installment, including Kitty, Dae, Yuri, Min Ho, Q, Juliana, Alex, Madison, Professor Lee, and newcomers Praveena and Jin. However, it’s unknown whether Stella (aka Esther) will return, considering she was sent back to Ohio.

Season 3 might finally give fans the Kitty and Min Ho love story fans been waiting for. In the finale, when Kitty is about to confess her feelings, Min Ho reveals he’s sworn off relationships after his misstep with Stella and is heading out on tour with his K-pop star brother for the summer. Kitty asks if she can tag along, but the episode ends before we hear Min Ho’s answer. What could happen during their summer together, if she even goes?

When it comes to Kitty and Yuri’s future on XO, Kitty, it seems that chapter is closed — at least for now. “I know so many people are rooting for them, and I love to see that,” Cathcart told Tudum. “I do think that storyline, at least for now, she’s kind of explored that.”

What Is The XO, Kitty Season 3 Release Date?

If XO, Kitty is renewed for a third season, fans may need to wait at least one to two years for new episodes, given the time required for writing, production, and post-production. This means Season 3 could arrive on Netflix sometime in late 2026 or early 2027.

‘Connections’ January 17: Hints and Answers for Puzzle #586

Friday is finally here and so is another Connections puzzle, with Newsweek ready to help you solve it.

The game from the The New York Times was launched in June 2023 and quickly became the news outlet’s second-most played game after Wordle. While the latter puzzle requires players to find one word a day, Connections challenges players to find common threads between a series of words.

Here, Newsweek has shared everything you need to know about today’s game. However, if you want to figure out the answers yourself, be careful when scrolling, as the answers are at the end of the article.

How To Play ‘Connections’

Playing Connections is pretty straightforward. Each daily puzzle includes 16 words distributed among four categories: yellow, green, blue and purple. The objective is for players to determine the shared link between each category.

The uniting themes can be from a very broad range of topics. Previous examples include types of plants, name homophones and taco toppings. A group’s color will be revealed only once the words in a group have been correctly connected.

If all four words are correctly placed into each set, those words will be removed from the board, and their category will be revealed at the top. Each incorrect guess counts toward the mistake tally. Players can make up to four mistakes before the game ends. There is no time limit, so people can take their time figuring it out before the game expires for the day.

Connections creator Wyna Liu of The New York Times previously explained the different difficulty levels.

“Some categories might be defined by their use of wordplay—palindromes, homophones, adding or dropping letters and words—rather than the literal meanings of the words on the cards,” Liu said.

“I saw three areas of potential difficulty that could be adjusted: the familiarity of the words, the ambiguity of their categorization, and the variety of the wordplay.”

If you are struggling, players are permitted to “shuffle” the board, which can help make the puzzle easier. If that doesn’t bring you closer to success, Newsweek can help.
