Anthony Davis to miss week after suffering abdominal strain
Los Angeles Lakers big man Anthony Davis will be out for at least a week after being diagnosed with an abdominal muscle strain, the team announced Wednesday.
Davis exited during the first quarter of Tuesday’s 118-104 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers after reaching back while jumping for a rebound and straining the muscle. He did not return to the game.
The Lakers said Davis underwent an MRI on Wednesday, will return to Los Angeles and is set to be reevaluated in approximately one week. That will rule him out for the remaining three games of the Lakers’ road trip against the Washington Wizards, New York Knicks and LA Clippers.
“When our best player goes out, it’s always challenging,” LeBron James said after Tuesday’s game. “If he’s out from the beginning, then we have a game plan set. We know what to expect, we know what our lineup is going to be. But when AD or any one of our guys go down throughout the course of a game, it’s just tough.”
Davis had been playing through plantar fasciitis in his left foot and discomfort in his right calf muscle, so the hope within the team is the time Davis misses will allow him to rest all three injuries. His comfort level with activity will determine the timeline for return, sources said
Dorian Finney-Smith started the second half in Davis’ spot against the 76ers and finished with three points and three rebounds in 19 minutes.
Davis had been on a tear entering Tuesday, averaging 32.8 points on 58.2% shooting, 15 rebounds and 2.5 blocks during the Lakers’ four-game winning streak. He finished with four points on 2-of-3 shooting, two rebounds and one steal against Philadelphia.
The Los Angeles Lakers will be without star forward Anthony Davis for at least a week after he suffered an abdominal strain during a recent game. Davis, who has been dealing with various injuries throughout the season, will undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the strain. This news comes as a blow to the Lakers, who are already without LeBron James due to an ankle injury. Davis has been a key player for the team, averaging 24.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game this season.
In his absence, the Lakers will need to rely on their other players to step up and fill the void left by Davis. This will be a challenging task, as Davis’s presence on both ends of the court is hard to replicate.
We wish Anthony Davis a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon. In the meantime, the Lakers will need to adjust their game plan and find ways to win without one of their top players.

NBA Makes Announcement After Warriors Starter’s Foul on Anthony Davis
The Golden State Warriors lost to their cross-state rival Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday with a final score of 118-110. The Warriors have now lost three of their last four, dropping to 22-23 on the season and falling to 11th place in the West.
The Lakers, on the other hand, have been on a roll. LA has now won six of their last seven games to improve to 26-18 on the season, sitting comfortably in fifth place in the conference.
Just like any high-stakes division matchup, tempers flared throughout the game. Late in the first quarter, Warriors center Kevon Looney met Lakers superstar Anthony Davis at the basket with a shove to the ground, resulting in a common foul being called.

Upon review, the NBA has announced that the play has been upgraded to a Flagrant 1.
“Kevon Looney’s (GSW) foul against Anthony Davis (LAL) at 3:05 of 1st qtr on 1/25/25 has been upgraded to a Flagrant 1 after league review,” the NBA wrote.

This is Looney’s first flagrant of the season, as he is typically a smart and level-headed player on the court. Regardless of what Looney’s plan was on the unsportsmanlike shove, it did not work. Davis finished the night with 36 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 steals, leading LA to a road win over the Warriors.

The Los Angeles Lakers earned a 118-108 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Saturday with a very solid team performance. While a number of their layers performed well, no one was better than Anthony Davis, who had 36 points and 13 rebounds and was on-target with his perimeter shot all evening.
With 3:05 left in the first quarter of that game, Warriors big man Kevon Looney committed a hard foul on Davis. At the time, it was ruled a common foul, but on Sunday, the league office upgraded the call to a flagrant 1 penalty after it reviewed the play and foul in question.

Looney had been a key member of the Warriors’ last championship team three years ago. But his playing time has diminished a bit in the last two seasons. On Saturday, he played only 10 minutes and had two rebounds while going scoreless.
The win improved the Lakers’ record to 25-18 while keeping them in fifth place in the Western Conference.

The controversial foul committed by Golden State Warriors’ Kevon Looney on Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis has been upgraded to a flagrant 1 after further review by the NBA officials. The play, which occurred during the second quarter of their recent matchup, left Davis shaken up and sparked a heated exchange between the two teams. Many fans and analysts have debated whether the foul was intentional or accidental, but regardless of intent, the league has deemed it necessary to upgrade the call in order to protect player safety. This decision may have repercussions for Looney, who could face a fine or suspension as a result of the upgraded ruling.
The incident serves as a reminder of the physicality and intensity of NBA games, and the importance of enforcing rules to prevent dangerous plays on the court. As both teams continue to compete in the playoffs, it will be interesting to see how this ruling impacts the series and the players involved.

Captain America: Brave New World
Ahead of the release of Captain America: Brave New World, star Anthony Mackie went viral with his take on what Captain America represents. And that’s not necessarily just America. The quote was widely shared and required follow-up clarification from the actor. But it feels like Mackie is being unfairly targeted given that the last actor to have that role, Chris Evans said something nearly identical when he took the part. And so has Captain American in the actual comics.
Here’s Mackie’s original quote:
“Captain America represents a lot of different things and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity and integrity.”
Then, later he followed up with another comment on Instagram:
“I’m a proud American and taking on the shield of a hero like Cap is the honor of a lifetime. I have the utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country. Cap has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.”
Chris Evans as Captain America
If this is a “controversy,” then you have to wonder why Chris Evans didn’t get the same level of flak for his quote about playing the character. Here’s him speaking with CBM back in 2011 ahead of the first film in the series, The First Avenger:
“Ha, well, to me, I’m not trying to get too lost in the American side of it. This isn’t a flag waving movie. It is red, white and blue, but it just so happens that the character was created in America during war time, when there was a common enemy, even though it is Captain America. I’ve said before in interviews, it feels more like he should just be called Captain Good. [Laughs] You know, he was created at a time when there was this undeniable evil and this guy was kind of created to fight that evil. I think that everyone could agree that Nazis were bad and he, Cap, just so happens to wear the red, white and blue.”
Going further back, this has often been portrayed significantly more pointedly by Captain America in the comics themselves. One such example from an issue:
“Listen to me, all of you out there! You were told by this man, your hero, that America is the greatest country in the world! He told you that Americans were the greatest people, that America could be refined like silver, could have the impurities hammered out of it and shine more brightly. He went on about how precious American was, how you needed to make sure it remained great. And he told you anything was justified to preserve that pearl of the great price that is America!”
“Well I say American is nothing! Without its ideals, its commitment to the freedom of all men, America is a piece of trash! A nation is nothing! A flag is a piece of cloth! I fought Adolph Hitler not because America was great, because it was fragile! I k new that liberty could be easily snuffed out here as in Nazi Germany! As a people we were no different than them! When I returned, I saw that you nearly did turn America into nothing!”
Imagine if Anthony Mackie said that. All Mackie is doing is reiterating a common sentiment about the character, and if the takeaway from people’s perception of Captain America is that he’s a mindless soldier fighting for the US to spread freedom everywhere, you don’t know the characters very well (maybe go watch The Winter Soldier again, for starters?). Mackie has many challenges ahead taking up this mantle, but this fake controversy should not be one of them.

Anthony Mackie’s recent statement about his character becoming Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has sparked controversy among fans. In an interview with Variety, Mackie said, “The idea of being a Black man and becoming Captain America is an amazing opportunity. But it comes with a lot of weight.” This statement mirrors what Chris Evans, who portrayed Steve Rogers/Captain America in the MCU, has said in the past about the character. In the comics, Steve Rogers passed on the mantle of Captain America to Sam Wilson, played by Mackie in the movies. This storyline has been met with mixed reactions from fans, with some praising the decision to have a Black actor take on the iconic role, while others expressing concern over the implications of the character’s race change.
Mackie’s comments about the weight of becoming Captain America highlight the social and cultural significance of the character, especially when portrayed by a Black actor. It is a reminder that representation matters in media, and that the roles we see on screen can have a powerful impact on how we view ourselves and others.
As the MCU continues to expand and evolve, it will be interesting to see how the character of Captain America develops under Mackie’s portrayal and how it reflects the changing social landscape of our world.

Anthony Mackie clarifies ‘Captain America’ remarks: ‘proud American’
Anthony Mackie is clearing the air.
Following a significant amount of backlash to his recent remark that “the term ‘America’” should not be “one of the representations” associated with his Marvel character, Captain America, Mackie took to Instagram Stories to state, “Let me be clear about this, I’m a proud American.”

“Taking on the shield of a hero like CAP is the honor of a lifetime,” he continued on the story posted Jan. 28. “I have the utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country. CAP has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.”
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to Marvel and Mackie for comment.
The reverse course came following comments Mackie made on stage at an event in Rome promoting the actor’s newest showing as the star-spangled supe, Captain America: Brave New World.
Eli Ade/Marvel
“To me Captain America represents a lot of different things, and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations,” Mackie said in a clip circulated online early this morning by several attendees. “It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable.”

Brave New World is Mackie’s first outing as Captain America in a proper Captain America film. The previous incarnation of the patriotic powerhouse was played by Chris Evans, whose Steve Rogers passed the mantle to Mackie’s Sam Wilson in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Mackie also appeared as Cap in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in 2021.

Mackie told EW at Comic-Con 2024 that “Brave New World is a great title for this film,” calling it “a new beginning, and it’s a foundation on which Marvel will build the universe on now. Not only this character but all the characters that surround him are new building blocks for us to utilize to move on through the universe and into to the future.”
Brave New World is the 35th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and fourth Captain America film overall. It will costar Harrison Ford, who takes over for the late William Hurt as President Thaddeus Ross, Danny Ramirez, Tim Blake Nelson, and Giancarlo Esposito. A trailer released last November shows Ford transforming into a beat-red Hulk.
“If you remember,” producer Nate Moore told Collider in 2022, Ross “actually threw [Captain America] in prison at the end of Civil War because he violated the Sokovia Accords. There’s going to be some natural sparks there, which I think are going to be really fun.”
Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently made headlines for his comments about taking on the mantle of Captain America in the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”In a recent interview, Mackie clarified his remarks, emphasizing that he is a “proud American” and that his comments were taken out of context. He explained that his character, Sam Wilson, struggles with the idea of becoming Captain America because of the complex history and symbolism of the shield.
Mackie went on to express his gratitude for the opportunity to portray a black superhero in the MCU and the importance of representation in media. He stated that he is committed to telling stories that resonate with audiences of all backgrounds and that he takes his responsibility as a role model seriously.
Overall, Mackie’s clarification serves as a reminder of the complexities of portraying iconic characters like Captain America and the importance of thoughtful representation in Hollywood. Fans can look forward to seeing how Sam Wilson’s journey unfolds in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and beyond.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers will certainly have their hands full when they play host to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Without both Joel Embiid and Andre Drummond, the Sixers will not have much size to match up with Anthony Davis.
Davis is having yet another monster season averaging 26.3 points and 12.1 rebounds, but is coming off two consecutive huge games for LA. He had 36 points and 13 rebounds on Saturday against the Golden State Warriors and 40 and 20 rebounds against the Charlotte Hornets on Monday.
Without Embiid and Drummond, coach Nick Nurse and the Sixers will have to figure out a way to slow him down.
“Obviously, he’s super skilled and super big, right?” Nurse said at practice on Monday. “So we got to try to devise something to take away some of the high percentage stuff. I thought in LA, he really just played a lot bigger than us. He was just at the front of the rim, mostly offensive rebounding, some late rolling post up plays where we just didn’t have time to send enough bodies, because he was catching it, getting the ball too deep on the rebounds, getting it too deep on some of the actions.”
Nurse is referring to Philadelphia’s loss to the Lakers back on Nov. 8 on the road. Davis had 31 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks as he took advantage of no Embiid in that contest as well. On Tuesday, the Sixers will need Guerschon Yabusele to hold his own and will send waves of defenders to help him.
“We got to try to figure that out, or at least try to push him out to make making shots rather than layup after layup after layup, but that’s certainly a challenge, right?” Nurse finished. “Just because of the size and all that stuff.”
The Sixers will look to get the job done on Tuesday and win their third straight game to begin a 6-game homestand.
In a recent interview, Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse shared his insights on how the Philadelphia 76ers can slow down Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis. Nurse, known for his defensive strategies, highlighted the importance of a collective effort from the Sixers’ defense to contain Davis.According to Nurse, the key to limiting Davis’s impact on the game is to disrupt his rhythm and force him into tough shots. This could be achieved through double-teaming, rotating defenders, and closing out on his jump shots. Nurse emphasized the need for active communication and coordination on defense to prevent Davis from getting into a groove.
Additionally, Nurse suggested that the Sixers should focus on limiting Davis’s opportunities in transition and crashing the boards to prevent him from scoring easy baskets. By controlling the pace of the game and denying Davis easy looks, the Sixers can make it harder for him to get going offensively.
Overall, Nurse’s advice for the Sixers is to stay disciplined, communicate effectively, and execute their defensive game plan with precision to slow down Anthony Davis and give themselves the best chance of success against the Lakers.
