Premier League issue statement over controversial Anthony Gordon goal | Football | Sport
The Premier League have explained why Anthony Gordon’s goal for Newcastle against Tottenham was allowed to stand after a lengthy VAR check.
The ball hit Joelinton’s arm in the build-up to the goal after Lucas Bergvall attempted to flick a pass through to Pedro Porro, only to be intercepted by the Brazilian.
Bruno Guimaraes then laid the ball off to Gordon who fired an effort past debutant Brandon Austin in the Spurs goal, cancelling out Dominic Solanke‘s opener.
Many inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, including Ally McCoist on commentary for TNT Sports, expected the goal to be ruled out for handball, only for referee Andy Madley to point to the centre circle for a goal.
Ange Postecoglou erupted on the touchline, partly due to the decision to award the goal but also sloppy passing from Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr to turn the ball over.
The league’s Match Centre has since explained why the goal was given, issuing a statement which read: “The referee’s call of goal was confirmed by VAR, who checked for a potential handball by Joelinton in the build-up and deemed that his arm was by his side, in a natural position and the contact was accidental.”
Dan Burn then found himself fortunate not to have been shown a second yellow card in the opening minutes, after he handled the ball to stop a Spurs counter.
Madley blew up for a foul but opted against brandishing another booking, despite clamours from the Spurs team to send Burn off.
All that chaos came in an opening 25 minutes which started with Solanke heading the ball past Martin Dubravka while new England head coach Thomas Tuchel watched on.
The striker’s smart run evaded Sven Botman, on his first start of the season, before finding the bottom corner with an emphatic headed effort.
Gordon then took his chance to impress Tuchel by firing past Austin, making his league debut for Spurs, in the absence of Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster.
Postecoglou’s outfit has since moved to address concerns between the two posts. They are set to welcome 21-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky this month in a £12.5million move from Slavia Prague.
The hosts’ misery was compounded when Alexander Isak got the final touch on a Jacob Murphy cross and turned it past Austin to take the lead before half-time.
The Premier League has issued a statement regarding the controversial goal scored by Anthony Gordon during the recent match between Everton and Manchester United. In a statement released on their official website, the Premier League acknowledged that there was significant debate surrounding the decision to award the goal to Gordon after it appeared that he may have been in an offside position.
After reviewing the incident with the use of VAR, the Premier League confirmed that the goal was correctly awarded as Gordon was deemed to be in an onside position at the time the ball was played.
The statement also emphasized the importance of VAR in ensuring fair play and accurate decision-making in matches, and reiterated the league’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the game.
Fans and pundits alike have been divided over the decision, with some arguing that Gordon’s goal should have been disallowed due to his positioning. However, the Premier League’s statement serves to clarify the ruling and put an end to the controversy surrounding the incident.
Overall, the Premier League’s statement reaffirms their dedication to maintaining transparency and accuracy in the adjudication of matches, and highlights the ongoing evolution of technology in football to ensure a fair and just outcome for all teams involved.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Anthony Carter made one request.
The Memphis Grizzlies assistant coach told the team he would stand and clap when Sacramento Kings guard Devin Carter made his first basket.
Even though Devin Carter plays for the opposing team, there were no objections to Anthony Carter’s request.
Carter has the unique opportunity of watching his son’s NBA debut during Friday night’s matchup between the Grizzlies and Kings.
So he’ll celebrate his son’s first NBA points, and then the competitive fire will kick in.
“Other than that, I want the win,” Anthony Carter said.
Devin Carter was the 13th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. His father was there, seated alongside him on draft night in New York City. Anthony also was there for Devin’s introductory news conference in Sacramento.
Anthony Carter remembers the uncertainty before the draft. Devin was dealing with a shoulder injury and they were unsure if an NBA team would take a chance on him.
Devin got surgery in July, and after a string of rehab games, his NBA debut will come with his father seated on the opposing bench.
“I’m just a little bit nervous. Not knowing what to expect,” Anthony Carter said. “I know how much hard work he put in behind the scenes with his rehab and stuff.”
“It’s just a great feeling to be able to say that your son made it to the NBA,” he later added.
About 80 minutes before tipoff, Anthony sat down on the courtside bench. One seat to his right was his son.
A 10-minute conversation proceeded. The two regularly have these talks before games, but Friday night was different.
This time, the father was wearing Grizzlies gear, and his son donned Kings shorts and purple sneakers.
“It’s just a blessing,” Devin Carter said. “Especially to play my first NBA game in front of him. Something you dream of as a kid.”
The nostalgia started to set in on the journey from Anthony Carter. He remembers the long days of when he was in the NBA and would workout with his son after games around the midnight hour.
He also remembers the choice. While Carter had a 13-year NBA career, he didn’t care if his son chose basketball or any other sport.
But Devin Carter made his choice early, so the two put in years and years of work towards that goal. A goal that resulted in a standout college career at Providence and becoming an NBA lottery pick.
“At the end of the day, I played basketball because I loved it,” Carter said. “Me telling him that just definitely built our bond a little bit more as well.”
Kings coach Doug Christie said Carter will play. Christie wants Carter to focus on defense and making the hustle plays.
Even if those hustle plays result in a little family fire.
“You might dive on a ball and take pops out, you never know,” Christie said.

The NBA world was abuzz as Memphis Grizzlies assistant coach Anthony Carter found himself on the opposite side of the court from his son Devin Carter’s NBA debut. It was a bittersweet moment for the father-son duo, who have shared a love for basketball since Devin was a young boy.Anthony Carter, a former NBA player himself, has been coaching in the league for several years now. Seeing his son follow in his footsteps and make it to the highest level of basketball was a proud moment for him, even if it meant they were on opposing teams for the night.
Devin Carter, a highly touted rookie, showed flashes of his potential in his debut game against the Grizzlies. Despite the competitive nature of the game, there was no denying the special bond between father and son as they shared a brief embrace after the final buzzer.
For Anthony Carter, it was a surreal experience to see his son living out his dream on the same court where he once played. And for Devin, it was a moment he will never forget, knowing that his father’s guidance and support helped him reach this milestone in his career.
As they walked off the court together, the Carter duo knew that this was just the beginning of a new chapter in their basketball journey. And no matter which team they find themselves on in the future, their bond as father and son will always remain unbreakable.

Lakers Injury Report: Anthony Davis, LeBron James probable vs. Hawks
After missing Thursday’s game against the Blazers, Anthony Davis looks set to rejoin the lineup on Friday. The Lakers’ injury report ahead of their showdown with the Hawks on the second night of a back-to-back lists AD as probable with his left ankle sprain.
LeBron James, who played on Thursday and was not on the injury report, is listed as probable with left foot injury management.
Notably, Gabe Vincent is listed as out with a left oblique strain. Previously, Gabe had not been ruled out on the injury report.
Prior to Thursday’s game, head coach JJ Redick said Gabe was still considered day-to-day but was “still dealing with some pain” from their injury sustained against the Kings.
Gabe’s absence is a bit more easily absorbed with the arrival of Shake Milton, even he has been inconsistent in his minutes.
As for AD, seeing where the Lakers go with their big men depth will be interesting. While they’ve used more small ball lineups, when AD sat on Thursday, the Lakers used a healthy amount of Jaxson Hayes and Christian Koloko.
It’s maybe a bit surprising to see LeBron listed as probable, too. Against the Blazers, LeBron exerted a whole lot of energy to help the Lakers secure the win. It certainly wouldn’t have been a surprise to see him rest and AD play on Friday.
That being said, LeBron did play on both sides of the team’s last back-to-back in Utah and in Minnesota. This is an important stretch of the season for the Lakers, specifically with this being the final contest of their four-game homestand and perhaps that also played into LeBron’s availability for this one.
Either way, the Lakers are going to need both AD and LeBron and more in this game given how their last game against the Hawks played out.

The Los Angeles Lakers have provided an injury report ahead of their matchup against the Atlanta Hawks, with stars Anthony Davis and LeBron James listed as probable.Davis has been dealing with a knee injury but is expected to suit up for the game. The Lakers will certainly need his presence on both ends of the court to secure a victory.
Meanwhile, James has been nursing an ankle injury but is also likely to play against the Hawks. His playmaking abilities and scoring touch will be crucial for the Lakers’ success.
Having both Davis and James available will be a huge boost for the Lakers as they look to continue their winning ways. Stay tuned for updates on their status leading up to game time.

Pistons G Jaden Ivey undergoes surgery to repair broken fibula after collision with Cole Anthony
Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey was enjoying a career year, which will now have to be put on hold.
The 2022 fifth overall pick underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a broken fibula in his left leg, the team announced.
Ivey suffered the injury after he collided with Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony in the first quarter of Wednesday’s game. The scene immediately interrupted the action, with several players from both teams surrounding Ivey as trainers attended to him. Ivey was eventually stretchered off the court.
Further replay showed Ivey’s ankle was bent several degrees the wrong way.
It was a somber scene as Ivey received treatment, with Anthony in tears as he looked on. The crowd applauded Ivey multiple times and chanted his last name as he was wheeled off with a Gatorade towel covering his left leg.

Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff commented afterward how Ivey’s injury impacted the team, via Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press:
“It’s tough on the whole group, to see him hurting like that is tough on us. He’s built for it, he’s going to shake back knowing him. He’s going to work his tail off and be better than ever when he gets back. It’s tough for sure.”
Such an injury would be brutal for any player, but it’s particularly bad for Ivey given that he seemed to be taking a step forward in his third NBA season.
Before Wednesday, Ivey had been averaging career highs nearly across the board, including in points (17.4 per game), rebounds (4.2), steals (0.9), field-goal percentage (45.3%) and 3-point percentage (39.2%). That performance is a major reason why the Pistons have already equaled last year’s win total with a record of 14-18 entering Wednesday’s game.
The Detroit Pistons announced today that rookie guard Jaden Ivey underwent surgery to repair a broken fibula after a collision with Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony during last night’s game.Ivey, who has been a standout performer for the Pistons this season, is expected to be out for an extended period of time as he recovers from the injury. The team has not provided a specific timeline for his return, but they are hopeful that he will be able to make a full recovery and return to the court as soon as possible.
The collision between Ivey and Anthony occurred in the second quarter of last night’s game, and Ivey had to be helped off the court by team trainers. The injury is a tough blow for the young guard, who was showing a lot of promise in his rookie season.
We wish Jaden Ivey a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the court soon. In the meantime, the Pistons will have to adjust to playing without one of their key contributors as they continue their season.

Anthony Edwards on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.: He’s ‘the MVP of the NBA’
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished second in MVP voting a season ago.
This season, Anthony Edwards thinks that would be one spot too low. Here is what Edwards told Tim MacMahon of ESPN.
“The MVP of the NBA,” Edwards told ESPN…
“I don’t know if they could give it to [Jokic] again,” said Edwards, who had 20 points in the loss. “Yeah, I would say Shai. Yeah, he’s looking like the MVP, man. He was incredible once again tonight.
“He’s consistent every night. His team gonna give him the ball and just let him rock out every night. It’s nothing to think about. ‘Hey, get Shai the ball and he going to get busy, and then we’re going to figure it out after that.’ I love watching that. It’s incredible, man. If he is keeping him like that, I hope they give [MVP] to him this year for sure. I feel like he should have won it last year, but he’s playing out his mind right now.”
SGA has a serious MVP case: 31.3 points, 6 assists and 5.5 rebounds a game, shooting 35% from three, plus defender, and the best player on the No. 1 team in the West.
A lot of fans — pushed by ESPN — like to track the MVP race like a horse race or a political campaign, and in the first straw poll of the season, Gilgeous-Alexander was second in the voting, trailing only three-time MVP Nikola Jokic (with Giannis Antetokounmpo close behind). It’s fair to ask if Jokic will face voter fatigue, and if the Nuggets getting bounced in the second round of the playoffs last season will impact voters at the end of the season (although that’s also when SGA and his Thunder were eliminated).
There’s still 60% of the NBA season rermaining for the MVP race to shake out, but we know who Anthony Edwards wants to see win.
Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Anthony Edwards had high praise for Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, calling him “the MVP of the NBA” in a recent interview.Edwards, who has been turning heads with his impressive play in his first season in the league, spoke highly of Gilgeous-Alexander’s skills and impact on the court.
“Shai is just a beast out there. He can do it all – score, pass, defend. He’s the MVP of the NBA in my book,” Edwards said.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who is known for his smooth ball-handling and scoring ability, has been a standout player for the Thunder this season, averaging over 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game.
It’s clear that Edwards has a lot of respect for Gilgeous-Alexander’s game, and it’s exciting to see young players recognizing and appreciating the talent of their peers in the league. It will be interesting to see how both players continue to develop and make their mark in the NBA.
