Giannis Antetokounmpo left furious after scuffle with Chris Paul during Milwaukee Bucks’ defeat against San Antonio Spurs
CNN
—
Giannis Antetokounmpo was left furious after a foul by Chris Paul sent him sprawling during the fourth quarter of his Milwaukee Bucks’ 144-118 defeat against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday.
With the Bucks 20 points down and just under four minutes on the clock, Antetokounmpo was driving towards the basket, attempting to fend off the Spurs’ defense, when Paul appeared to push the Bucks star who tumbled over and immediately began gesticulating and shouting.
As he approached Paul, a small scuffle broke out between the teams, with security and coaches coming onto the court to intervene before officials called Paul for a common foul.
After the game, Antetokounmpo told reporters that “nothing” happened and it was just a “physical play,” before saying “I don’t know if I was tripped or I was pushed.”
When asked about his reaction, Antetokounmpo said “if you try me, you’re gonna get that different side of me.”
“At the end of the day, I think we’re all men. We all respect one another,” he added. “If words cross the line, then there’s got to be consequences. I really don’t say much. I don’t say much to start with, try to play the game the right way.
“But enough is enough. If I feel like you’re putting my livelihood, my career and my body in jeopardy in danger, enough is enough, brother. I have a family to feed, and what makes you laugh can also make you cry sometimes.”
Antetokounmpo had 35 points and 13 rebounds during the game but couldn’t secure the win for the Bucks who were undone by their leaky defense and a brilliant performance by Victor Wembanyama who had 30 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks.
The two stars duked it out from the very start of the game, with Wembanyama blocking two of Antetokounmpo’s shots in the first two minutes. Though Antetokounmpo was eventually able to unleash offensively, Wembanyama retaliated, sinking five three-pointers as he celebrated being named in his first All-Star reserves team.
It also marked Wembanyama’s sixth career game in which he posted at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, the joint-second most by any NBA player in the last 20 seasons, per ESPN.
San Antonio will next take the court on Saturday to face the Miami Heat, while the Bucks will host the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, the reigning NBA Finals MVP, was left fuming after a heated altercation with Chris Paul during the Milwaukee Bucks’ recent loss to the San Antonio Spurs. The scuffle between the two superstars occurred in the fourth quarter of the game, with tensions running high as both teams fought for the win. Giannis and Chris exchanged words and physicality, leading to a brief but intense confrontation on the court.
Despite Giannis’ best efforts to lead his team to victory, the Bucks ultimately fell short against the Spurs. The frustration of the loss, combined with the altercation with Chris Paul, left Giannis visibly upset and disappointed.
Fans and analysts alike were quick to weigh in on the incident, with many speculating on the cause of the confrontation and its implications for both players and their teams.
As the dust settles on this intense matchup, one thing is clear: Giannis Antetokounmpo is not one to back down from a challenge, and he will undoubtedly use this experience as fuel to come back stronger in the next game.

#Giannis #Antetokounmpo #left #furious #scuffle #Chris #Paul #Milwaukee #Bucks #defeat #San #Antonio #SpursRumor: The Spurs are working on a four-team trade that would bring De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio
The trade deadline is just a week away (minus a couple of hours), and rumors are starting to swirl that the Spurs are in talks about a potential four-team trade that would ultimately bring Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio. One such source is Don Harris: the longtime sports anchor for News 4 San Antonio and someone who would certainly have a good ear within the organization.
Source: Spurs very active and perhaps close on complicated 4 team deal that would bring D’Aaron Fox to San Antonio. Stay tuned.
— Don Harris (@DonHarris4) January 31, 2025
Harris also went on to remind everyone that most trade talks and rumors don’t happen, can fall apart anytime or end up being inaccurate, so don’t think this is a done deal, but it does seem like the negotiations are at least real.
I’ve done this a long time. 98% of the time NBA trade talks, rumors, scenarios, fall apart or are different than the stuff that agents, & GMs float or leak. So anything can happen. But folks are busy. Nothing done yet as far as I know.
— Don Harris (@DonHarris4) January 31, 2025
What this deal may cost the Spurs and which other teams are involved remains to be seen, but an ESPN radio host out of Sacramento, Damien Barling, has added that it would not include Stephon Castle, which makes sense considering he is someone the Spurs seriously coveted out of last year’s draft and have high hopes for going forward. (It also goes without saying the Victor Wembanyama would not be included in any trade.)
Indications are the Spurs will not trade Stephon Castle in a De’Aaron Fox deal.
— Damien Barling (@damienbarling) January 31, 2025
This leaves players like Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins and possibly even Chris Paul or Harrison Barnes to consider for salary-matching purposes (although the Spurs have the cap space to absorb some extra salary), and such a deal would also surely include some of the Spurs’ huge treasure trove of first round draft picks. Other factors to consider would be if Fox would be willing to sign an extension or re-sign with them in 2026 (word is he would) before considering what to give up for him.
All trade rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, and while this one is no different and complex enough that just one party backing out could bring it to an end, there’s certainly enough smoke out there to acknowledge it.
Rumor Alert: The Spurs are reportedly in talks for a blockbuster four-team trade that would land De’Aaron Fox in San Antonio!According to sources, the Spurs are looking to shake things up and add a young, dynamic point guard like Fox to their roster. The trade is said to involve multiple teams, with the Kings, Pelicans, and Pacers also potentially involved in the deal.
Fox, who is known for his lightning-quick speed and playmaking ability, would be a huge addition to the Spurs backcourt. His scoring and passing skills could provide a much-needed boost to the team’s offense.
While nothing is set in stone yet, this rumor has fans buzzing with excitement about the potential of seeing Fox in a Spurs uniform. Stay tuned for updates as the trade talks progress! #GoSpursGo #DeAaronFoxTradeRumors

#Miami #Heat #San #Antonio #Spurs #odds #picks #predictionsJosh Giddey Had Been a Player of Interest for the San Antonio Spurs
Nobody on the Chicago Bulls is safe during trade season!
While most rumors have centered around the availability of Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic, we have heard that Arturas Karnisovas is open to any and all business. There is really no other way to go about things when you sit 20-28 and on the cusp of a third straight Play-In Tournament appearance. The Bulls must get out of the middle and pave a new path toward legitimate competitiveness. This deadline is an opportunity to start laying the asphalt.
Does this mean we should expect a trade to get done that involves someone not named LaVine, Vucevic, or Lonzo Ball? Not necessarily. But it does mean we shouldn’t necessarily be shocked when any Bulls player appears in the rumor mill, including one of their newest additions.
In a recent article by The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer, Josh Giddey was named as someone the San Antonio Spurs have had on their radar.
“Another name that’s always lingered as a potential franchise point guard of Spurs interest: Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball. The Hornets have never welcomed trade inquiries for their eccentric ball handler. And yet the Spurs, sources said, have tried to register their interest in Ball during previous transaction cycles.
Chicago’s Josh Giddey has likewise been a young guard that San Antonio has envisioned possibly pairing with Wembanyama down the road.”
You can read Jake Fischer’s full intel piece and subscribe to The Stein Line newsletter here.
Spurs Have Thought About Josh Giddey
Let’s be very clear, we should not consider this an active trade rumor … yet. Fischer is not saying that the San Antonio Spurs have recently contacted the Bulls about a Josh Giddey trade or even plan to in the near future. He merely mentions the guard alongside several others as someone the franchise has thought about as an eventual target. These kinds of hypothetical talks go on behind the scenes all the time.
Regardless, hearing about any level of interest in a Bulls player right now is intriguing for all the reasons we talked about above. Nobody on the team is safe. With that in mind, would it hurt Karnisovas to give the Spurs a call? I’m assuming those conversations would be rebuffed with all the ongoing De’Aaron Fox reports. But it can never hurt to check in, right?
This also feels like somewhat significant news when we consider Giddey’s future. While the Spurs might not have an interest in trading for the guard, he is positioned to hit restricted free agency this upcoming summer. The Bulls chose not to extend Giddey after acquiring him with only one year left on his deal in a direct swap for Alex Caruso. So perhaps Fischer’s “down the road” comment relates to a potential pursuit of him this summer?
For what it’s worth, I could definitely envision a world where the Bulls allow the market to set Giddey’s price. His first season in Chicago has left a lot to be desired thus far, particularly when we consider his poor defense and around-the-rim efficiency. Likewise, Karnisovas has already been burned by his five-year, $90 million contract for Patrick Williams. Shouldn’t the goal be to avoid that happening again at all costs, particularly as you embark on a rebuild? There isn’t a lot of risk in allowing a player to hit the market when you have the right to match any offer sheet!
With the De’Aaron Fox stuff currently swirling, I think this is a rumor we can place in the back of the filing cabinet for now. However, if a deal doesn’t get done between the Spurs and Kings, this may be something worth discussing more as the offseason approaches. San Antonio needs a future facilitator to pair with big man Victor Wembanyama, and we all know Giddey is overflowing with playmaking upside.

Josh Giddey, the highly touted Australian prospect, has reportedly been on the radar of the San Antonio Spurs leading up to the 2021 NBA Draft. The 18-year-old guard has been turning heads with his impressive playmaking ability and basketball IQ, making him an intriguing option for the Spurs.Giddey, who played for the Adelaide 36ers in the NBL, has drawn comparisons to NBA All-Star Ben Simmons for his size, passing skills, and versatility on the court. Standing at 6’8″, Giddey has the ability to play multiple positions and create mismatches for opposing defenses.
With the Spurs known for their player development and emphasis on team basketball, Giddey seems like a natural fit for the organization. His unselfish play and high basketball IQ align with the Spurs’ values, and he could potentially thrive under the guidance of head coach Gregg Popovich.
While it remains to be seen if the Spurs will ultimately select Giddey in the draft, it’s clear that he has caught their attention. With his combination of size, skill, and potential, Giddey could be a valuable addition to the Spurs’ young core as they look to build for the future. Stay tuned to see if Josh Giddey ends up in a Spurs jersey come draft night.

Milwaukee is just 1-3 SU in its last 4 road games.
While SAN ANTONIO (+115) has lost 4 straight at home, it’s unlikely that trend continues, as the Spurs are still a respectable 12-11 SU at Frost Bank Center this season.
The Bucks have won the last 4 meetings, but this is a much improved Spurs team from seasons past. Look for San Antonio to get its revenge after losing in Milwaukee Jan. 8.

Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs Milwaukee Bucks
The Milwaukee Bucks had a rocky start to the season, but they’ve largely righted the ship. Led by perennial MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo, a resurgent Damian Lillard, and a cast of players that have been incredibly efficient shooting the 3, Milwaukee this year has a borderline top 10 offense (currently 11th) and the 9th ranked defense per 100 possessions. While there’s still a lot of season left, the Bucks do seem destined to rank no higher than 4th in the standings out East, thanks in part to the surprising year Cleveland is having and the largely-expected success of the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks. Though they won the NBA’s in-season tournament, the ultimate goal for a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber remains the Larry O’Brian trophy, and they’re certainly a team that no one would want to see in the playoffs.
For the Spurs, a brutal January schedule has yielded just 3 wins. They’ve struggled to find any sort of consistency, all too often falling apart in the 2nd half of games. It’s tough to keep in mind at times that basically none of the players on the roster really know anything about playing winning basketball, and it’s definitely been on display this month. Maybe a big trade before the deadline shakes things up and changes their current trajectory, but what they really need is for Victor Wembanyama to play like the best player on the court night in and night out.
San Antonio Spurs (20-24) vs Milwaukee Bucks (26-19)
January 31 2025 | 7:00 PM CT
Watch: KENS | Listen: WOAI (1200 AM)
Spurs Injuries: Sidy Cissoko, concussion (questionable)
Bucks Injuries: Giannis Antetokounmpo, knee (probable), Khris Middleton, ankle (probable), Bobby Portis, personal (OUT), AJ Green, quad (questionable)
What to watch for
- Newly named All Star Victor Wembanyama was uncharacteristically timid on offense when these two clubs met earlier this month in Milwaukee. Wemby attempted just 10 shots that game in 33 minutes, his second lowest total of the season, and made no trips to the free throw line that game either. Milwaukee possesses a formidable defensive backline with the combination of Giannis and Brook Lopez, with Giannis in particular appearing to take the match-up personally in that first meeting. Antetokounmpo possesses the rare combination of length, height, and athleticism to truly guard Wemby out on the perimeter, as well as inside the 3-point line. Can Wemby match him tonight?
- Damian Lillard has had a much stronger 2nd season in Milwaukee and is looking much more comfortable playing next to Antetokounmpo as well. At 34 years old, Lillard remains an offensive threat that is more than capable of going off on any given night. He’s shooting 38% from 3, up from the 35% that he shot last year, and is averaging numbers across the board that are in line or better in some cases with his career averages.
- Chris Paul hasn’t scored more than 13 points in a game since he poured in 18 in San Antonio’s last meeting with Milwaukee. It’s not really realistic to expect the nearly 40-year old Paul to be the dominating force on offense that he once was, but if he’s going to be getting significant minutes the Spurs need him to at least be as efficient as possible.
- Injuries appear to have taken away what was the the best of Khris Middleton. One of the heroes of Milwaukee’s run to the championship 4 years ago, Middleton has struggled with injuries ever since. He’s come off the bench for Milwaukee for much of this season, appearing in only 21 games and averaging roughly 23 minutes in those contests. He’s scored 0 points in 2 of his last 3 games, both losses for Milwaukee.

Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs Milwaukee BucksThe San Antonio Spurs are set to take on the Milwaukee Bucks in what promises to be an exciting matchup between two talented teams. The Spurs, led by veteran coach Gregg Popovich, are known for their strong defensive play and disciplined style of basketball. With a roster that includes stars like DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge, the Spurs will be looking to use their experience and skill to come out on top.
On the other side of the court, the Milwaukee Bucks are led by reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is widely regarded as one of the best players in the league. The Bucks have been on a hot streak lately, thanks in large part to the stellar play of Antetokounmpo and his supporting cast. With shooters like Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe, the Bucks have the firepower to put up big numbers on offense.
Both teams will be looking to secure a crucial win in this matchup, as they jockey for playoff positioning in their respective conferences. The Spurs will need to focus on containing Antetokounmpo and limiting his impact on the game, while the Bucks will have to find a way to break through the Spurs’ tough defense.
Overall, this game has all the makings of a thrilling contest between two talented teams. Fans can expect a high-energy, competitive game as the Spurs and Bucks battle it out on the court. Be sure to tune in to see which team comes out on top in this exciting matchup.

Drexel University names Antonio Merlo its new president
Drexel University has tapped an Italian-born political economist who formerly worked at the University of Pennsylvania and currently serves as a dean at New York University as its next president.
Antonio Merlo, 61, dean of the faculty of the College of Arts & Science, will replace interim president Denis P. O’Brien on July 1. O’Brien became leader of the 22,100-student West Philadelphia university in September after John A. Fry, who led Drexel for 14 years, was named president of Temple University.
Merlo, who spent 14 years as a scholar and leader at Penn, where he also coached men’s water polo and led the team to three championship titles in the Mid Atlantic Division of the Collegiate Water Polo Association, was chosen following the work of a search committee including trustees, faculty members, students and administrators that lasted just under six months.
“Dr. Merlo is the ideal leader to uphold Drexel’s values and guide the university into its next chapter,” Richard Greenawalt, outgoing chair of Drexel’s board of trustees said in a statement. “His commitment to academic entrepreneurship and his proven success in bringing together faculty, students, scholars, and practitioners to address critical societal challenges are particularly vital as we move forward with strategic institutional priorities, including an academic transformation already underway, and focus on building long-term financial resilience.”
Facing financial challenges
Merlo comes as Drexel, along with many other colleges, continues to cope with financial challenges as the college-going pool declines, faith in higher education wanes, and competition increases. In September, the school asked several deans to step down as part of consolidating two colleges and one of its schools into a new entity. It’s part of a larger academic restructuring, which also includes plans to move from a quarter system to a semester system over the next few years.
Later that fall, college leaders announced the school had experienced a 15% decline in first-year students and a $63 million operating loss. In November, Drexel laid off 60 employees, and another 155, or 3.6% of the workforce, opted for a voluntary retirement incentive program.

The school at that time said it was aiming to come up with $150 million through cuts and revenue increases to regain a positive operating margin by 2027. It already had identified much of those cuts; some of the work may now fall to Merlo.
“I am excited to begin my journey with Drexel and to help the university realize its tremendous potential,” Merlo said in a statement. “The coming years will undoubtedly bring significant changes to higher education, but they also present tremendous opportunities for institutions like Drexel.”
At NYU, Merlo prioritized fundraising and “right-sizing staff,” Drexel said, noting that NYU’s Arts & Science school raised its most amount of money ever in 2024.
In a video when he re-joined NYU, Merlo said: “I would characterize myself as an academic entrepreneur, constantly thinking about what do the next generation of students need, what do the next generation of faculty need…”

‘Gregarious, articulate, passionate…’
Merlo isn’t the first president born outside the U.S. to lead Drexel. The late Constantine “Taki” Papadakis, who served as president from 1995 until his death in 2009, was born in Greece. Papadakis oversaw a major expansion of Drexel, transforming it from a struggling engineering school to a strong institution with a law school and medical school.
Born in a small town outside of Milan, he grew up in a working-class family and was a first-generation college student. He began playing water polo at age 12, and it grew into a passion, he said during a 2020 interview on a sports program. He got his undergraduate degree in economics and social sciences from Bocconi University in Italy in 1987, came to the United States in 1988, and earned his doctorate in economics from NYU.
He started his career as an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota in 1992 and worked there for six years before returning to NYU as an associate professor of economics. In 2000, he joined Penn where he worked for 14 years, serving as an economics professor, chair of the department and director of the Penn Institute for Economic Research. In 2009, he received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching.
In hiring Merlo in 2000, a Penn dean described him as one of the leading experts in the nation on the political economy, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian. In a 2013 story by the student newspaper, he was described as “gregarious, articulate, passionate and intense,” in regard to his coaching.

He joined Rice University in 2014 where he was an economics professor and chaired the department, later becoming dean of its school of social sciences. There, he also worked with government agencies and nonprofit groups to set up a public policy research institute, according to Drexel.
Since 2019, he’s served as dean of NYU’s largest academic unit, overseeing three schools, as well as departments, research centers, institutes and language and cultural houses. During his tenure, five new centers fostering cross-disciplinary work have been started, as well as an office of research.
His research has explored the economic impact of public policy and he has written about how the economy affects voting and crime and “the career decisions of politicians.” Merlo also coached water polo at Rice and NYU, in addition to Penn, and three times has been named coach of the year.
“Dr. Merlo is truly a rising star in higher education,” Mike Lawrie, incoming board of trustees’ chair who led the search committee, said in a statement. “He has championed new initiatives and taken on leadership roles at every institution that he has served, while endearing himself to students, faculty and staff along the way.”
Lawrie, who is founder and CEO of the Lawrie Group, a consulting and management firm, and founder, chair and CEO of TLG Acquisition One Corp., will replace Greenawalt as board chair, the school announced. Drexel’s Lawrie Advanced Global Leadership Program is named after him.

Merlo, who currently serves as the Andrew H. and Ann R. Tisch Professor of Economics at New York University, will take over the role from current president John Fry.
Merlo brings with him a wealth of experience in academia, having previously held positions at institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, Berkeley. He is known for his expertise in economics and public policy, and is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Drexel’s leadership team.
In a statement, Merlo expressed his excitement about joining Drexel and his commitment to furthering the university’s mission of academic excellence and innovation. He also thanked the university’s board of trustees for their confidence in him and pledged to work tirelessly to advance Drexel’s reputation and impact.

Antonio Banderas’ Ex Melanie Griffith Evacuated to Daughter Stella’s During L.A. Fires (Exclusive)
Antonio Banderas‘ family in Los Angeles remains safe, weeks after a series of devastating wildfires broke out across the city.
Banderas, 64, tells PEOPLE in a recent interview about his Bosch Super Bowl commercial that his ex-wife Melanie Griffith and other members of her family stayed with their daughter Stella Banderas after they were ordered to evacuate from their homes in the initial days after fires burst out across L.A. county on Jan. 7.
“With Dakota, I think she was out of Los Angeles,” Banderas says of his stepdaughter Dakota Johnson, who has been photographed traveling through India with her fiancé Chris Martin during Coldplay’s world tour in recent days. “But I talk all the time with my daughter Stella. I continue doing it and I know everybody’s fine. I know that Melanie was at some point, the whole entire area where she lives, they got the evacuation. And so her, my ex mother-in-law, some friends of my daughter, they were all living with my daughter because she was in an area that was not [affected].”
Babygirl actor Banderas was married to Griffith, 67, from 1996 to 2015. The pair share Stella, 28, and Johnson, 35, has always been close to Banderas. Her father is Don Johnson, whom Griffith was previously married to. Griffith also shares son Alexander Bauer with ex-husband Steven Bauer and and stepson Jesse Johnson with Don, now 75.

Thousands of structures have been destroyed by the multiple fires that have broken out in L.A. over the last two-plus weeks, with 27 deaths caused by the still-burning Palisades and Eaton Fires. More than 80,000 people have been displaced by the fires, including a significant number of celebrities who live throughout L.A. County.
“My daughter was telling me, ‘Oh, Papi, I never experienced winds like this in Los Angeles. It was unbelievable, and it was very difficult to stop. We were seeing embers that were just flying miles and falling into another neighborhood,’ ” Banderas says. “So if you are not looking at the sky entire time, you can find the surprise that your house is just burning from the roof. So all of these things were happening all at the same time. . . It’s very difficult.”

“I suppose that’s gonna be a whole full investigation, just to see not only what happened, but how to avoid it in the future,” he adds. “But it’s very difficult for European people to understand that a big city like Los Angeles with so much investing, so much money and that something like this can happen, that neighborhoods, complete neighborhoods, they were flattened by fire. It’s weird. It’s just strange.”
Banderas’ commercial with Bosch will air during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, Feb. 9.
In the midst of the devastating wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles, actress Melanie Griffith found herself in need of a safe haven. The ex-wife of Antonio Banderas was forced to evacuate her home and seek refuge at her daughter Stella’s residence.According to sources close to the family, Griffith’s daughter Stella, whom she shares with ex-husband Don Johnson, opened her doors to her mother during this difficult time. The mother-daughter duo is said to be staying together and supporting each other through the chaos and uncertainty of the wildfires.
Griffith’s ex-husband Antonio Banderas has reportedly reached out to offer his support and ensure the safety of his former wife. Despite their past differences, it’s heartening to see the Hollywood family come together in a time of crisis.
Our thoughts are with Melanie Griffith, Stella, and all those affected by the devastating fires in Los Angeles. Stay safe, everyone.
