A man digs up an unexploded ordnance in Rafah, southern Gaza, on Wednesday. People returning to bombed areas are being taught to recognize the explosives, which could be deadly.

While fighting in the air may have stopped in Gaza, danger remains for Palestinians returning to parts of the war-torn territory due to unexploded bombs on the ground. They blend in with the mounds of rubble and destruction. Efforts are underway in Gaza to locate and remove these bombs, starting in the southern Gaza city of Rafah — which saw some of the heaviest combat in the 15-month-long long war between Israel and Hamas. But mines advisory groups say in order to address the large amount of unexploded ordnances (UXO) left behind, a wider response is critical. For Gazans, it’s an added fear of death despite a ceasefire that has halted air and ground offensives.”We’re scared for the young ones, for our families,” said Raed Al-Akka, a 27-year-old father of three from Rafah, told CBC News”I’m scared of leaving my house and encountering a rocket that explodes on me or my wife or my children, or in the street on my neighbours … anywhere.”WATCH | Fear for kids as explosives teams remove ordnances in Rafah: With access to Gaza still limited, especially in the first stage of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, it is challenging to estimate the likely scale of contamination of explosives at this stage, said Greg Crowther, director of programmes with the Mines Advisory Group (MAG).”It’s clear that there will be a significant threat to life and a long-term barrier to reconstruction efforts,” Crowther said in an email to CBC News Friday.A ‘dangerous environment’For now, their focus is on risk education in the territory.MAG, which had helped to clear Gaza of landmines after conflicts in 2008 and 2009, partnered with Save Youth Future Society, and deployed 20 risk education teams across Gaza to teach communities how to stay safe around explosive hazards through recognizing, avoiding and reporting possible hazards. They have delivered sessions to more than 160,000 people since launching in September 2024.Crowther said that because Gaza is densely populated and highly urbanized, the use of explosive weapons has had a “particularly devastating effect.””Beyond what is visible, you also have to factor in items that have so far failed to detonate but remain hidden, putting people at risk — this creates a dangerous environment especially as people return to their home location and dig through rubble,” he said.Raed Al-Akka, a 27-year-old father of three from Rafah in southern Gaza, says he worries for his family’s safety with unexploded ordnances littered across the enclave. (Mohamed El Saife/CBC)The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has previously warned about explosive ordnances that have become “increasingly widespread,” across the tiny coastal enclave that has been under heavy bombardment by Israel. It said its explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams have encountered aerial bombs, mortars, rockets, all-calibre projectiles, grenades and improvised explosive devices. Deep buried bombs common in GazaIn Gaza specifically, deep buried bombs are found underneath or within infrastructures and under rubble. ”As families return to their homes, we are rapidly increasing our capacity to mitigate the risk of explosive ordnance to civilians and humanitarians alike,” UNMAS said in a post on X Monday. As more Palestinians return to different parts of the Gaza Strip following the ceasefire which began Sunday, a UN damage assessment released this month showed that clearing over 50 million tonnes of rubble left in the aftermath of Israel’s bombardment could take 21 years and cost up to $1.2 billion US.Mohammed Muqdad, head of the Rafah’s explosives department, said its teams began to locate and remove the weapons in the first phase of the ceasefire.”Rafah specifically has been afflicted, the majority of the area has been destroyed,” Muqdad told CBC News Wednesday.”We have been dealing with dozens of remaining unexploded ordnances that we transport to safe areas to eventually get rid of them.”Kids being taught to recognize the weaponsSo far, the teams have completed more than 120 calls to remove UXOs, working each day since Sunday.”The team is continuing to work on further removing other ordnances from residential areas,” he said. “We’re doing as much as we can to lift and remove [them].”Muqdad said the teams have removed bombs that are used in aircraft, such as MK, GBU 39, cannon and tank bombs, but require special technical equipment to clear the much larger explosives.Authorities have asked residents to stay away from certain areas that are dangerous and believed to have a large number of these devices.Mohammed Muqdad said the teams have removed bombs that are used in aircrafts, like MK, GBU 39, cannon and tank bombs, but require special technical equipment to clear the much larger ordnances. (Mohamed El Saife/CBC)Some ordnances, such as smaller explosives that are ejected from cluster munitions, may not look like ordinary threats to children at first, which can be a danger.Crowther said children also participate in the risk education sessions to be aware of the types of weapons used in the war.”It’s especially important to share this information with them, as their natural curiosity can put them at greater risk of injury should they come across explosive weapons and simply assume they are toys,” he said.Al-Akka called on experts to remove the explosives.”So we can take our freedom and go to our homes, remove the rubble and sit in our homes,” Al-Akka said.”We’ve seen enough martyrs and bloodshed in the war.”Limited co-ordination, capability in GazaCrowther said explosive threat assessments and survey activities in addition to technical equipment must be expanded to allow for a wider humanitarian response. ”There is currently limited co-ordination and capability to carry out these activities, both in terms of the technical equipment required, and the number of qualified personnel that are currently in Gaza,” Crowther said.More than 47,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel in the 15-month war, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. Due to the chaos of war, verifying the exact number of casualties has been challenging and subject to scrutiny. Unexploded ordnances seen on top of rubble in Rafah, Gaza, on Wednesday. (Mohamed El Saife/CBC)The coastal enclave has been largely demolished by Israel’s military following Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel. That assault killed 1,200 people with around 250 hostages taken into Gaza, according to Israeli tallies. Some 94 Israelis and foreigners remain held in Gaza. It is unclear how many are alive. The Palestinian Civil Defence said it is searching for an estimated 10,000 bodies believed to be remaining under the rubble.A peer-reviewed study published in The Lancet on Jan. 9 suggests that the official figures of deaths in Gaza may be significantly underestimated. On June 30, 2024, the Gaza Health Ministry reported 37,877 deaths; the study estimated the number was likely around 64,200 by that date.

Mark Wahlberg ‘Apologized’ to Cast After Filming “Flight Risk” Because He Was So ‘Locked Into’ Villain Role (Exclusive)

In a recent interview, Mark Wahlberg opened up about his experience filming the upcoming thriller “Flight Risk” and how he found himself so immersed in his villainous character that he felt the need to apologize to his castmates after filming wrapped.

Wahlberg, known for his versatile acting skills, took on the role of a cunning and ruthless criminal mastermind in “Flight Risk.” The character required Wahlberg to tap into a darker side of himself, pushing the boundaries of his acting abilities.

“I really had to dive deep into this character and explore some really dark aspects of his personality,” Wahlberg said. “I found myself getting so locked into the role that it started affecting my interactions with my fellow cast members off set.”

After completing filming, Wahlberg realized the toll that embodying such a complex character had taken on him and those around him. Feeling the need to address any potential tension or discomfort he may have caused, Wahlberg gathered the cast together to express his apologies.

Despite the challenges he faced while portraying the antagonist in “Flight Risk,” Wahlberg expressed gratitude for the opportunity to push himself as an actor and explore new depths in his craft. • Here’s why Draymond Green apologized again for punching Jordan Poole

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green really is sorry for punching then-teammate Jordan Poole during a preseason practice in 2022.

But, the four-time NBA All-Star said this week, it’s time to move on.

Green addressed the matter after Poole, now with the Washington Wizards, seemed to indirectly reference it while talking to reporters following the Wizards’ 122-114 loss Saturday to the Warriors in San Francisco.

“I love those guys over there,” Poole said of his former teammates, before quickly self-editing. “I love most of those guys over there.”

After Andscape NBA writer Marc Spears posted the quote on X, Green left a four-word response in the comments.

I really am sorry,” Green wrote.

On the most recent episode of “The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis” podcast, Green addressed why he chose to apologize again more than two years after he did so the first time.

“I responded because, you know, it’s been [around] three years,” Green said. “Like, let’s move on, you know? We’ve moved on — like, supposed to move on, man. I really am sorry. [Poole’s] statement was kind of like it was looking for some sympathy and kind of keep wanting to make me out to be the bad guy.

Move on, bro. Like, it is what it is. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have punched him. But, you know, it happened. Let’s move on, man.”

Green has spent all 13 of his seasons with the Warriors, winning four NBA championships along the way. Poole, a first-round pick for Golden State in 2019, was a significant contributor to the most recent of those titles, following the 2021-2022 season. That year, he led the league with a .925 free-throw percentage and averaged 18.5 points a game.

During a team practice Oct. 5, 2022, an apparent altercation between Poole and Green led the older player to get in the face of his younger teammate. Poole then shoved Green, who responded with a punch to the face so hard it knocked Poole to the ground.

“I know I was wrong, but you can’t call a man a B-word and push him and not get hit either,” Green said this week. “So I kind of sit in both of those spaces sometimes. And like, the reality is, the answer is probably somewhere in the middle, right? I shouldn’t have knocked him out like that. If anything, I should have hemmed him up — kind of was just a natural reaction.”

After video of the incident leaked to the public days later, Green addressed the matter in a news conference, saying he had apologized to Poole, Poole’s family and the rest of the team. Speaking with reporters later that month, Poole acknowledged Green’s apology and said they both intended on acting like professionals as the Warriors attempted to defend their title.

Green was fined by the Warriors but not suspended. He spent some time away from the team following the incident but was back in the lineup before the start of the regular season. Poole started in roughly half of the team’s games that season and averaged 20.4 points a game. But the Warriors’ season ended after they lost to the Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals, and Poole was traded to the Wizards as part of a deal that sent Chris Paul to the Warriors that offseason.

During the 2023-24 season, Green received a five-game suspension for putting Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert in a chokehold during an on-court scuffle and an indefinite suspension that resulted in him missing 12 games for hitting Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in the face during a game.

Of the four times Poole has faced the Warriors since being traded, he had his best game Saturday, finishing with 38 points, five rebounds and five assists. Green indicated he wishes Poole hadn’t brought up their past issues afterward.

“You just kind of gotta move on and keep on pushing, man,” Green said. “You gotta let it go.”

In a recent press conference, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green issued another apology for punching teammate Jordan Poole during a practice session. This incident marks the second time Green has publicly apologized for his actions towards Poole, with the first apology coming immediately after the altercation occurred.

Green cited his frustration and emotions getting the best of him as the reasons for his behavior, acknowledging that he needs to do better in controlling his temper on the court. Despite his competitive nature and fiery personality being key components of his playing style, Green emphasized the importance of respecting his teammates and maintaining a positive team dynamic.

Poole, who received a bruised jaw from the altercation, has since accepted Green’s apology and expressed his commitment to moving forward as a team. The Warriors organization has also addressed the incident, stating that they will handle the matter internally and work towards resolving any underlying issues within the team.

As Green continues to reflect on his actions and strive for personal growth, his teammates and fans remain supportive of his efforts to be a better leader and teammate. It is hoped that this incident will serve as a learning opportunity for Green and the Warriors, strengthening their bond as a team and fostering a more positive and productive environment moving forward.

  • Mark Wahlberg ‘Apologized’ to Cast After Playing Villain in ‘Flight Risk’ (Exclusive)

Mark Wahlberg indulged in a rare opportunity to portray the villain in his latest movie.

In his new thriller Flight Risk, the Boogie Nights actor, 53, plays a hit man pretending to be a pilot, whose latest targets are U.S. marshal Madelyn (Michelle Dockery) and Winston (Topher Grace), a fugitive who she has detained out of Alaska.

“I was locked into the part the whole time. So if we weren’t shooting, I was like either off in the corner by myself or I just would kind of go back to my little dressing room and just sit there,” Wahlberg says of staying in character on set. He last portrayed a villain in 1996’s Fear, opposite Reese Witherspoon.

“I was like the guy who was like constantly picking at them, poking them and prodding them, you know, from the back of the plane the whole entire time,” he adds. “I apologized at the end because I wasn’t very engaging off camera or outside of shooting, but I was just in [that] head space. We only had 22 days of shooting. So it wasn’t four months, five months of this. We shot it very quickly.”

Flight Risk marks his first time acting in a Mel Gibson-directed film. Wahlberg and Gibson previously acted together in movies like 2022’s Father Stu and 2017’s Daddy’s Home 2. Wahlberg told PEOPLE back in June 2024 that he decided he wanted to play the film’s villain after Gibson, 69, sent him the film’s script and “didn’t even say which role” he envisioned Wahlberg playing.

Wahlberg is not just any villain in Flight Risk — his character torments his adversaries throughout the movie as they joust physically and verbally for control over a small passenger plane in the Alaskan wilderness.

“I’ve been saying over and over how much I love movies like The Shining with [Jack Nicholson] and In The Line of Fire with [John Malkovich] and Cape Fear with [Robert] De Niro. Those are the kind of characters that I always loved and gravitated towards, and I hadn’t done it in such a long time,” he adds of inspiration for the role. “I don’t know, I just kept all these ideas popping into my head about how I would play that particular role.”

Flight Risk is now in theaters.

Mark Wahlberg ‘Apologized’ to Cast After Playing Villain in ‘Flight Risk’ (Exclusive)

In a surprising turn of events, Hollywood actor Mark Wahlberg has reportedly issued a heartfelt apology to his fellow cast members after playing a villainous role in the upcoming action thriller ‘Flight Risk’.

According to sources close to the production, Wahlberg took on the challenging role of a ruthless criminal mastermind in the film, which required him to engage in some intense and morally ambiguous scenes. However, it seems that the actor’s commitment to his character may have taken a toll on his relationships with his co-stars.

In a recent interview, Wahlberg revealed that he felt compelled to reach out to his fellow actors and apologize for any discomfort or tension that may have arisen during filming. He explained that he wanted to make sure that they understood that his on-screen persona was not a reflection of his true self, and that he valued their professionalism and camaraderie on set.

The gesture was met with gratitude and appreciation from the cast, who praised Wahlberg for his humility and sincerity. It seems that the actor’s willingness to take responsibility for his actions and show vulnerability has only deepened the bond between him and his colleagues.

‘Flight Risk’ is set to premiere in theaters next month, and fans are eagerly anticipating Wahlberg’s performance in what promises to be a gripping and intense thriller. With his apology behind him, it seems that the actor is ready to move forward and continue delivering standout performances on the big screen.

Source: Eagles’ Sirianni apologized to Commanders’ Ertz for spat

PHILADELPHIA —Eagles coach Nick Sirianni apologized to Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz following a heated exchange between the two of them Sunday, a league source confirmed.

The two met on the field after the Commanders’ 36-33 win over Philadelphia. Apparently not liking the power with which Ertz high-fived him, Sirianni mocked Ertz for having little impact in the game, the source said.

Ertz, who was coming off a concussion, had one catch for 12 yards on two targets.

Taking exception to Sirianni’s comments, Ertz got in Sirianni’s face. The situation was deescalated by Eagles head of security Dom DiSandro.

The incident was first reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Sirianni later called to apologize to Ertz, the source said.

“I’ll just keep all of my conversations with any guys private,” Sirianni said Thursday. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Zach. Great football player, great person to be around. I really got a lot of respect for Zach and all the good things that he’s done and my relationship with him.”

Ertz played the first eight-plus years of his career with the Eagles and is one of the most accomplished pass-catchers in the franchise’s history. He ranks second in all-time receptions (579) and fifth in receiving yards (6,267).

Ertz scored the go-ahead touchdown in Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, helping the Eagles capture their one and only Lombardi Trophy.

He played six games under Sirianni during the 2021 season before being traded to the Arizona Cardinals in October of that season. A source said there were no real issues between the two during their time together in Philadelphia.br/]

Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni reportedly apologized to Washington Commanders’ tight end Zach Ertz after a heated exchange during their recent matchup.

According to sources, Sirianni approached Ertz after the game and expressed regret for their on-field confrontation. The incident, which was caught on camera, showed Sirianni yelling at Ertz during a timeout.

It is unclear what exactly sparked the altercation, but both parties have since moved on from the incident. Ertz has reportedly accepted Sirianni’s apology and the two are focused on moving forward.

The Eagles and Commanders are set to face off again later in the season, so it will be interesting to see if there are any lingering tensions between the two teams. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Nick Sirianni called Zach Ertz to apologize after a high five led to a post-game separation – Hogs Haven
Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported yesterday that the two had to be separated by Eagles chief security officer Dom DiSandro. […] “But according to sources close to the incident. Here’s what really happened. Ertz went to shake Sirianni’s hand and could tell the coach was agitated, so instead gave him a high five. Sirianni didn’t like the intensity of Ertz’s hand slap and mocked him because he had only one catch and told him he essentially did nothing to contribute to the Commanders’ win. Ertz took exception and got in Sirianni’s face, but the coaches escort, as always Dom DiSandro, jumped in and held Ertz back and ushered a defeated Sirianni to the tunnel. Sirianni later called Ertz and apologized over a Zoom conference call.”

Eagles sign quarterback to practice squad ahead of Cowboys game – BGN
The Philadelphia Eagles are signing free agent quarterback Ian Book to their practice squad, according to a report from NFL insider Mike Garafolo. The news has since been confirmed by an official team announcement. The Eagles had an opening after releasing practice squad tight end Kevin Foelsch earlier this week. The Eagles signing Book points to the team having significant concerns about QB availability in their game against the Dallas Cowboys this week.

Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield among NFL stars up for bonuses – ESPN
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. After leaving the New York Giants and signing with the rival Eagles in free agency, Barkley proved that he has plenty left in the tank. He currently leads the NFL with 2,114 yards from scrimmage, which will earn him $500,000. A Pro Bowl nod nets Barkley an additional $250,000, and an All-Pro selection earns him $500,000. Barkley will also benefit if the Eagles go on a deep playoff run. He is set to earn $250,000 in bonus money with an NFC championship win and $500,000 with a Super Bowl victory.

Week 17 NFL picks: Can Bears knock off Seahawks on ‘TNF’? Broncos or Bengals in huge AFC clash? – NFL.com
Why Ali picked the Eagles: I waited as long as I could to make this pick, hoping to glean some insights as to who would, or perhaps more importantly, who wouldn’t be suiting up for this NFC East battle. The unknowns related to Jalen Hurts (concussion) and Ceedee Lamb (shoulder) are particularly challenging to navigate, as neither team’s offense looks remotely the same without its respective superstar on the field. The same could be said for the Cowboys’ defense, which was a mess while Micah Parsons was sidelined earlier this season. But since Week 12, the unit has been among the NFL’s most opportunistic, tied for first in takeaways and leading the league outright in sacks. I expect the Cowboys to carry a massive chip into this division contest, one that’s been building since the beating the Eagles put on them back in Week 10. That desire for revenge helps to keep this game close, but not enough to keep Saquon Barkley and the Eagles’ top-ranked defense at bay for 60 minutes.

Are Eagles mulling kickoff change after debacle vs. Commanders? – NBCSP
Michael Clay didn’t even wait until anybody asked a question about kickoffs and kickoff coverage. At his weekly media chat Tuesday, the Eagles’ special teams coach addressed it before he even took any questions. And he hinted that the Eagles may be considering a change to try and prevent what happened Sunday in the loss to the Commanders. “We didn’t play well enough, special-teams wise, especially in the coverage phase, primarily on kickoff coverage,” he said. “We put our defense in terrible situations. One, starting off the game with a penalty. Not what our standard is and then coming back and letting them have a big return. … Overall, wasn’t up to our standard. We put our defense in a bad spot. Kudos to Vic (Fangio) and (the defense) for getting some turnovers right after those bad spots. But we’ve got to be better, especially as we’re ending this regular season and getting into playoff football-time mode, especially going against Dallas. We all know KaVontae Turpin is a dangerous returner. But not up to our standards when we played against Washington.” It was a bad day all around on kickoffs.

Eagles mourn the passing of Bill Bergey, NFC Champion and member of the franchise’s Hall of Fame – PE.com
The Eagles are saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Bergey, one of the franchise’s greatest linebackers and a member of the Eagles Hall of Fame. He fought valiantly and bravely against cancer for three years. He died peacefully on Christmas morning at the age of 79, surrounded by his loving family. “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Bergey. An Eagles all-time great, Bill was a legendary linebacker who gained the respect of players and coaches across the league for his blue-collar work ethic and hard-nosed play,” said Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie. “He was rightfully inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 1988. Bill exemplified what it meant to be an Eagle in every way, and proudly represented the team in the community well after his playing days were over. We will all miss him dearly and extend our deepest condolences to the entire Bergey family.” Bergey is survived by his wife of 55 years, Micky, three sons – Jason, Jake, and Josh, 10 grandkids whom he loved and cherished every day, and two siblings – his brother, Bruce, and sister, Sylvia. He was a man who loved his family to the end. His bear hugs will be missed.

Cowboys roundtable: Defensive players, the Dallas offense, and the Philly game – Blogging The Boys
Howman: I’ll start with my hot take: everyone is saying Dallas has a legit shot to win if Kenny Pickett has to play again, but I think the odds are better if Jalen Hurts ends up playing. Hurts has been terrible under pressure this year, with a dismal -0.39 EPA/dropback when pressured. That’s behind the likes of Bryce Young, Sam Darnold, and Aaron Rodgers, and just barely ahead of Kirk Cousins, who just got benched. Stopping Saquon Barkley is going to be its own challenge no matter what, but I like the prospects of this red hot Mike Zimmer defense going up against Hurts. […] Tom: The Cowboys know Barkley well. It’s probably the one facet that will determine the game. If Dallas forces Philadelphia to go to the air, there’s a chance. As for a hot take, I think this turns out to be a battle of the back, with Dowdle rebounding in a big way. […] RJ: It is hard to know how this will go with the question mark surrounding Jalen Hurts. Ultimately I think the Cowboys probably lose in a tough fight which will please Team Tank. My hot take is that CeeDee Lamb has a hat trick’s worth of touchdowns in his final performance of the calendar year 2024.

Update: Video of the incident via WUSA9

There was reportedly an incident after the Eagles vs Commanders game involving Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni and Washington TE Zach Ertz. The Commanders won 36-33 in an upset win over the Eagles who came into Landover on a 10-game winning streak. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported yesterday that the two had to be separated by Eagles chief security officer Dom DiSandro.

McLane provided more details on his latest podcast:

Nick Sirianni was asked about the exchange after the game. “We just say congrats like congrats, both of us say congrats to each other.”

Ertz told an Inquirer reporter. “I’ll let him comment on what was said. To me, we just exchanged holiday pleasantries and kept it moving,”

But according to sources close to the incident.

Sirianni later called Ertz and apologized over a Zoom conference call.

Ertz was on the Eagles during Siranni’s first year, but was traded to the Cardinals mid-season. Ertz went to Arizona and worked with head coach Kliff Kingsbury who is now Washington’s offensive coordinator. Not a happy homecoming for the former Philadelphia Eagle.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni recently issued an apology to tight end Zach Ertz after a simple high five led to a temporary separation between the two. During a practice session, Ertz went in for a high five with Sirianni, but the coach missed the gesture, causing a moment of awkwardness between the two.

Sirianni took to social media to publicly apologize to Ertz, acknowledging the misunderstanding and expressing his regret for the unintentional snub. He reassured fans that there was no bad blood between him and Ertz, and that they have since laughed off the incident and moved on.

This lighthearted moment serves as a reminder that even in the high-pressure world of professional football, it’s important to maintain a sense of humor and perspective. The Eagles are gearing up for a successful season, and with a coach like Sirianni who is willing to admit his mistakes and make amends, the team is sure to have a positive and inclusive atmosphere moving forward.

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles coach Nick Sirianni apologized to Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz following a heated exchange between the two of them Sunday, a league source confirmed.

Sirianni did not go into detail about why he felt compelled to apologize when asked about it Thursday, saying that he keeps his conversations with players private and adding that he has respect for Ertz.
