Door appeared ajar on a kit plane in California crash that killed 2 and injured 19
FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — The homebuilt airplane that crashed into a California warehouse earlier this month appears to have had a door ajar while in flight, according to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board.
The Van’s RV-10 attempted to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff on Jan. 2 from Fullerton Municipal Airport, south of Los Angeles. The crash killed the pilot and his teenage daughter and injured 19 people inside a furniture manufacturing business.
The NTSB report made public Wednesday also said the door, which opened upward, had been modified in a way that affected a warning system that would have alerted the pilot that it was ajar.
Investigators cite witness statements and a car’s dashcam video of the moments before the crash. The NTSB typically releases preliminary findings within weeks of a plane crash, and a final report comes months later.
One witness at the airport said he noticed the plane seemed to be flying “at a lower altitude than he would have expected considering its distance down the runway.” He also said the aircraft’s left door was open and up, according to the report.
“He then saw an arm reach up and pull the door down. By this time the airplane was far enough away that he could no longer discern what was happening,” the report said.
Witnesses from a different vantage point described seeing the plane “flying lower than normal and banking aggressively left,” prompting concern it might stall.
“The airplane then rolled right as its nose dropped, and dove towards the warehouse where it collided in a fireball,” the report said. The witnesses stated that just before impact they saw a white, panel-like piece fall from the plane.
Moments after takeoff, the pilot told the air traffic control tower: “Immediate landing required.”
He initially said he planned to land on Runway 6. The air traffic controller responded by saying either that strip or Runway 24 were available. The pilot chose Runway 24. Moments later, panicked gasping and an “Oh my God” could be heard just before the audio went quiet.
The Federal Aviation Administration said at the time that the aircraft asked for a return to the airport at about 900 feet (274 meters). It crashed about 1,000 feet (305 meters) short of Runway 24, hitting a sprawling warehouse owned by Michael Nicholas Designs.
The plane’s two occupants, pilot Pascal Reid and his 16-year-old daughter Kelly, were killed. Eleven people on the ground were taken to hospitals, while eight were treated at the scene, police said. The injuries ranged from minor to very serious.
The single-engine, four-seat Van’s RV-10 is a popular home-built airplane sold in kit form. Investigators said Reid owned the aircraft, which was built in 2011.
Tragedy Strikes as Door Appears Ajar on Kit Plane in California Crash: 2 Dead, 19 InjuredIn a devastating turn of events, a kit plane crashed in California, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving 19 others injured. The cause of the crash? A door that appeared to be ajar.
The small aircraft was reportedly carrying a group of passengers on a sightseeing tour when the door unexpectedly opened mid-flight. Despite the pilot’s best efforts to control the plane, it ultimately spiraled out of control and crashed into a nearby field.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where they found the wreckage of the plane scattered across the field. Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Investigators are now working to determine what caused the door to come loose and whether any negligence or mechanical issues played a role in the tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives and with the injured passengers as they recover from this harrowing experience.

Only the Founder’s Edition of that card is up on Best Buy’s site so far, though a few pre-built desktops are shown.
Newegg is showing both RTX 5090 and 5080 variants, with over 40 different models from Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, Zotac, and PNY. Prices for these specific cards aren’t available yet, and Nvidia’s Founders Edition cards are notably absent from the lineup. According to a Newegg press release, they go on sale in the US on Thursday, January 30th at 9 AM Eastern (6 AM Pacific) along with pre-built PCs with the new GPUs.
In an echo of… well, pretty much every Nvidia release of the last decade, the company is already warning that cards might go out of stock quickly. It says that it’s working with partners to get as many GPUs on shelves as possible, but please resist the urge to enrich scalpers. Elden Ring will still be there in a couple of months. This article was produced for ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network in partnership with Wisconsin Watch. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.
Moments before 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow opened fire inside her Madison, Wisconsin, school, killing two people and herself last month, a social media account believed to be hers posted a photograph on X showing someone sitting in a bathroom stall and flashing a hand gesture that has become a symbol for white supremacy.
As news about the shooting broke, another X user responded: “Livestream it.”
Extremism researchers now believe that second account belonged to 17-year-old Solomon Henderson, who police say walked into his high school cafeteria in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday and fired 10 shots, killing one classmate and then himself. Archives of another X account linked to him show that he posted a similar photo to Rupnow’s in his final moments.
While there isn’t any evidence that Rupnow and Henderson plotted their attacks together, extremism researchers who have tracked their social media activity told Wisconsin Watch and ProPublica that the two teenagers were active in the same online networks that glorify mass shooters, even crossing paths. Across various social media platforms, the networks trade hateful memes alongside terrorist literature, exchange tips on how to effectively commit attacks and encourage one another to carry out their own.
The researchers had been tracking these networks for months as part of work looking into growing online extremist networks that have proliferated across gaming, chatting and social media platforms and that they believe are radicalizing young people to commit mass shootings and other violence.
The researchers’ analysis found only a few instances in which Rupnow and Henderson appeared to interact directly. But in the hours, days and weeks that followed the Madison shooting, Henderson appears to have become fixated on Rupnow. He boasted on X that Rupnow and him were “mutuals,” a common internet term for following each other, and shared another post that said, “i used to be mutuals with someone who is now a real school shooter ;-).”
In the hours after Natalie Rupnow opened fire in her school in Madison, Solomon Henderson posted numerous times on X, supporting her and boasting that they were “mutuals.”

The researchers, who have collaborated with counterterrorism organizations, academics and law enforcement to prevent violence by tracking how extremist networks radicalize youth online, agreed to share information as long as they weren’t named out of concerns for their physical safety. The news outlets vetted their credentials with several experts in the field.
It’s impossible to know with complete certainty that online accounts belong to particular people without specialized access to devices and accounts from law enforcement. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has acknowledged the existence of two documents they believe Henderson created, both of which contain details about his social media accounts. Other researchers and groups — including the Anti-Defamation League, Canadian extremism expert Marc-André Argentino and SITE Intelligence Group — have also determined these likely belong to Henderson.
The extremism researchers linked accounts to Rupnow, who went by Samantha, by tracing her activity across multiple social media profiles that revealed common biographical details, including personal acquaintances and that she lived in Wisconsin. On the bathroom post, one person the account regularly interacted with referred to Rupnow by her nickname, “Sam.” Wisconsin Watch and ProPublica were able to verify the social media posts and the connections between the accounts by retracing the researchers’ steps through archived social media accounts and screenshots.
On Thursday, ABC News cited law enforcement sources in reporting that a social media account connected to Henderson may have been in contact with Rupnow’s social media account. The information reviewed by Wisconsin Watch and ProPublica details their suspected connections and interactions. Nearly all of the accounts that researchers have linked to Rupnow and Henderson have now been suspended.
A Madison Police Department spokesperson said the agency knows Rupnow “was very active on social media” and it is “just starting” to receive and review documents from tech companies. The Nashville police said they had nothing further to add beyond their previous statements.
Rubi Patricia Vergara, 14, and Erin West, 42, were killed at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. Josselin Corea Escalante, 16, died at Antioch High School in Nashville. Both attackers also killed themselves.
Rupnow and Henderson each had multiple X accounts, the extremism researchers told Wisconsin Watch and ProPublica. At the time of her attack, Rupnow followed just 13 other users. Two of those accounts have been linked to Henderson.
In November, Rupnow shared a post from Henderson, which appeared to wish a happy Veterans Day to the man who killed more than a dozen people at University of Texas at Austin in 1966.
After the Madison attack, someone wrote to Henderson and others on X, saying that one of their “buddies” may have “shot up a school.” Henderson told another user, “I barely know her,” and said he had never exchanged private messages with her. Later, in a 51-page screed that Nashville police are examining, he emulated and praised several past attackers including Rupnow and said, “I have connections with some of them only loosely via online messaging platforms.”
After Rupnow’s shooting, Henderson called her a “Saintress,” using a term common in the networks, and posted or reshared posts about her dozens of times, celebrating her racist, genocidal online persona and the fact that she had taken action. On one platform, he used a photograph of her as his profile picture. In his writings, he said he scrawled Rupnow’s name and those of other perpetrators on his weapon and gear.
The online networks the two teenagers inhabited have an array of influences, ideologies and aesthetics. To varying degrees of commitment and sincerity, they ascribe to white supremacist, anti-Semitic, racist, neo-Nazi, occult or satanic beliefs.
In this online world, the currency that buys clout is violence. This violence often involves children and teenagers harming other children and teenagers, some through doxing or encouraging self-harm, others, like Rupnow and Henderson, by committing mass attacks in the nonvirtual world.
“This network is best described as an online subculture that celebrates violent attacks and radicalizes young people into committing violence,” said one of the violence prevention researchers. “Many of the individuals involved in this network are minors, and we’d like to see intervention to give them the help and support they need, for their own safety as well as those around them.”
Members of some of these communities, including Terrorgram, 764 and Com, have engaged in activities online and offline that have led to convictions for possessing child sexual abuse materials and sexually exploiting a child and indictments for soliciting hate crimes and soliciting the murder of federal officials. The cases are pending, and the defendants have not filed responses in court. This month, the U.S. State Department designated the Terrorgram Collective as a terrorist organization, saying “the group promotes violent white supremacism, solicits attacks on perceived adversaries, and provides guidance and instructional materials on tactics, methods, and targets for attacks, including on critical infrastructure and government officials.”
When details of the Nashville shooting began to emerge, researchers realized they had seen some of Henderson’s accounts and posts within the network of about 100 users they are tracking. They had previously reported one username of an account belonging to Henderson, as well as others within the network, to law enforcement and filed several reports with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
They had not been aware of Rupnow’s accounts before her attack but were able to locate her within the network after the fact, discovering she had regularly interacted with other accounts they had been following.
Alex Newhouse, an extremism researcher at the University of Colorado, Boulder, said these subcultures have a long history of lionizing and mimicking past attackers while goading one another to enact as much violence as possible — even by assigning “scores” to past attacks, something Henderson engaged with online. “The Antioch one is very obviously copycat,” Newhouse said.
Although Henderson’s diary indicates he had been contemplating an attack for months prior to Rupnow’s, her shooting drew his attention. Hours after, he retweeted another post that said: “There should be a betting market for which rw twitter figure will radicalize the next shooter.” (RW stands for right-wing.)
However the two teens entered this online subculture, their writings reveal despair about their personal lives and the world around them and expressed violent, hateful views.
After the Madison shooting, a separate social media user noted their association and tweeted at the FBI, accusing Henderson and others of having prior warning. They “need to be locked up,” the poster said, “no questions asked.”
The FBI declined to comment. After Henderson’s attack, social media users returned to the tweet: “hey so this guy literally just ended up calling a future school shooter a month ahead of time and the FBI did nothing about it.”
Mollie Simon contributed research.
In a recent investigation by ProPublica, it was revealed that the school shooters in Madison and Nashville may have crossed paths online. The disturbing connection between these two individuals raises questions about the influence of online communities on acts of violence. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story. #SchoolShooters #OnlineCommunities #ProPublicaInvestigation

Issa Rae appeared at Houston’s Hobby Center
A rambunctious, sold-out crowd greeted actress/rising TV mogul Issa Rae during an appearance in Houston on Saturday, January 18.
Best known for creating and starring in the popular HBO show Insecure, the actress/film & TV mogul of color was in town for An Evening with Issa Rae, which took place at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Rae was in town to promote two things: One of Them Days, the just-released, number-one buddy comedy she produced starring Keke Palmer and SZA (she even made a post-screening appearance at Regal Edwards Houston Marq*E and Cinemark Tinseltown 290 on Friday night); and Viarae Prosecco, her sparkling white wine (which the theater was serving in the lobby via a special menu).
After an hour of local DJ CeeWatts playing tunes (from older, grown-and-sexy jams to club anthems) that hyped up the crowd, 97.9 The Box personality Keyshia Nicole came out to introduce Rae, who was hit with thunderous applause when she stepped onstage.
Rae and Nicole basically had a public gossip session, as they both sipped on Viarae and Nicole asked Rae questions ranging from the possibility of an Insecure movie (“I love that y’all love it, but I feel the story has been told,” she told the disappointed audience), how she handles being perceived in the industry (“I hate being underestimated, but I love it too”), men in LA (“They’re pretty… and wanna be bad b****es”), and who’s the better producer: DJ Quik or Dr. Dre (for Rae, it’s not Dre).
Later on, the crowd participated in an audience Q&A. At one point, a dude from one of the upper boxes didn’t even wait for a microphone and yelled out to Rae about getting him acting work on one of her shows. “I’m not doing any shows right now,” Rae told him.
The evening ended with Rae and two Houstonian actors who appeared in Insecure – DomiNque Perry and Kendrick Sampson – playing trivia games with groups of audience members, with Perry and Sampson as team captains and Rae as the host, spinning a wheel of topics. At one point, Sampson and Perry led the audience in a sing-along of Z-Ro’s “Mo City Don.”
After the event, Rae told a group of reporters backstage that this evening was a test drive for a live show she’s been working on. “This is still kind of an experimental show, like figuring out what it is,” Rae said. “And, so, I’m just grateful that people want to come and see what it is, and it’s something that we’re shaping. We’re doing another one in D.C. but it’s just always fun to meet the people who’ve been supporting me for a very long time.”
Rae certainly enjoyed trying things out in front of a very appreciative, very enthusiastic Houston audience. “They were amazing,” she said. “I mean, they were so, so hype and I could feel the love and the energy and the excitement. It was just a privilege to be in front of them.”
Last night, the talented Issa Rae graced the stage at Houston’s Hobby Center and delivered an unforgettable performance. The actress, writer, and producer, known for her hit show “Insecure,” captivated the audience with her wit, charm, and undeniable talent. From sharing behind-the-scenes stories from the set of “Insecure” to discussing her journey in the entertainment industry, Issa Rae kept the crowd engaged and entertained throughout the evening. Her candidness and authenticity resonated with fans, who left the event feeling inspired and empowered.
It was truly a night to remember, as Issa Rae proved once again why she is a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. Here’s to more incredible performances and moments from this talented star. Thank you, Issa Rae, for gracing us with your presence at Houston’s Hobby Center.

#Issa #Rae #appeared #Houstons #Hobby #CenterI Just Found Out Elsbeth Is Not The First Time Michael Emerson And Carrie Preston Have Appeared Together On One Of Their Shows
So, here’s the thing, I’m new to the world of Elsbeth. I was not fully aware of Carrie Preston before tuning into the show, and I also didn’t know she was married to Michael Emerson until he appeared in Elsbeth during the last couple of episodes of 2024. Now, I’m in love with them, their relationship and this face-off their characters have going on in the CBS show. However, I didn’t know this wasn’t the first time the married couple had worked together, and I’m genuinely shocked I wasn’t aware of their past collaborations.
Long before Emerson came onto Elsbeth to play the “almost untouchable” murderer and judge Milton Crawford, Preston appeared in two major shows he was a mainstay on. That’s right, she guest-starred on both Lost and Person of Interest.
The two have been married since 1998, and they’ve worked together on a handful of projects, including one of the best dramas of the early 2000s, Lost. In 2007, Preston was cast in one episode of the megahit drama to play Emily Linus, the mother of Emerson’s character Ben. While she showed up in a flashback, not one of her real-life husband’s present scenes, it’s still an odd relationship to play out.
During an interview with Variety, the two humorously addressed that wild situation with the following back and forth:
- Michael Emerson: A Freudian nightmare.
- Carrie Preston: Yeah, that’s something when you give birth to your husband in the woods. Not many people can say that they’ve done that.
- Michael Emerson: At least I didn’t have to play that scene.
Later, they even joked that Emerson should play Preston’s father in a flashback at some point.
Then, after her one episode of Lost, The Good Wife actress was on one of her husband’s popular shows again, Person of Interest. Between 2012 and 2016 she appeared in eight episodes of the beloved thriller as Grace Hendricks, the fiancée of Emerson’s character Harold Finch.
(Image credit: CBS’s YouTube Channel) On top of Preston playing characters in the two shows Emerson is arguably best known for, he also guest starred on her show Claws in 2017. Plus, the couple worked on a few smaller projects. This included the 1998 TV movie Grace and Glorie, the 2004 film Straight-Jacket and the 2008 movie Ready? OK! So, it’s safe to say these two are no strangers to working together both personally and professionally.
Now, while Elsbeth isn’t even close to the first time Preston and Emerson have collaborated, it is the first time they’ve played enemies. However, it’s quite fitting for them, as they reflected on how the Elsbeth lead tends to take “light-hearted” characters while her husband is more often than not playing someone evil. To that point, the Person of Interest star described this collaboration on the CBS series perfectly, saying:
It’s like a collision of universes.
Honestly, as Preston described, Judge Crawford is like “the Moriarty to [Elsbeth’s] Sherlock,” and it’s been extremely fun to watch.
Now, while we wait for Elsbeth’s return to the 2025 TV schedule (it will be back on January 30, by the way), I’ll need to go back and watch some Person of Interest and Lost to see this married couple’s careers collide. They made for wonderful screen partners on the CBS series and their 26-year-long marriage proves they are marvelous together in real life, and now I’m dying to see more of them working together.
So, to accomplish that goal, we can all go back and watch Carrie Preston and Michael Emerson’s collaboration highlights by streaming Elsbeth with a Paramount+ subscription, Lost with a Netflix subscription and Person of Interest with an Amazon Prime subscription.
I Just Found Out Elsbeth Is Not The First Time Michael Emerson And Carrie Preston Have Appeared Together On One Of Their ShowsFans of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight” are likely familiar with the character Elsbeth Tascioni, played by the talented Carrie Preston. But did you know that Elsbeth is not the first time Preston and her husband, Michael Emerson, have appeared together on one of their shows?
In fact, the couple has shared the screen on multiple occasions, including on the hit TV show “Lost.” Emerson played the enigmatic character Ben Linus, while Preston had a recurring role as Ben’s mother, Emily Linus. Their dynamic and chemistry on screen was undeniable, and fans were thrilled to see the real-life couple bring these complex characters to life.
It’s always a treat to see talented actors like Michael Emerson and Carrie Preston share the screen, and we can only hope that they continue to collaborate on future projects. Who knows what other surprises they have in store for us?
