  • End Appears Near for U.S. Aid Agency, Democratic Lawmakers Say

The website for the U.S. Agency for International Development went dark Saturday afternoon as lawmakers and aid workers, already reeling over the recent freezes to foreign assistance and the suspension of senior officials, braced for the possibility that the agency might be shut down.

A slimmed-down page for U.S.A.I.D. appeared on the State Department’s website Saturday afternoon, suggesting that the agency’s activities — which are currently severely limited — had been brought under the State Department’s umbrella.

Democratic lawmakers and aid workers have been gripped since Friday by reports that President Trump was planning to issue an executive order dismantling the aid agency and moving its work to the State Department.

Mr. Trump has made no secret of his disdain for the scope of American foreign aid, arguing that sending taxpayer dollars overseas runs counter to his America first agenda.

By Saturday, lawmakers had received word that at least some of the U.S.A.I.D. signs at the agency’s headquarters in downtown Washington had come down, and rumors were circling that mission directors around the world were being called back to the United States. Those reports could not be independently verified.

Two U.S.A.I.D. employees, who work in the Washington headquarters and spoke on condition of anonymity because of an order barring employees from discussing any changes to the agency, said that they were working under an atmosphere of fear and chaos, and that half of the agency’s work force had been eliminated in the last week.

People familiar with the changes said that Pete Marocco, a State Department official who held multiple roles in the first Trump administration, appeared to be overseeing the gutting of the U.S.A.I.D. program.

Three other U.S.A.I.D. workers, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that Gemini, an A.I. program, had been installed on their email accounts, leading to fears that deputies of Elon Musk, whom Mr. Trump tasked to run a new cost-cutting group known as the Department of Government Efficiency, were trying to surveil their activities.

State Department officials did not answer inquiries seeking to clarify the purpose of the moves, which lawmakers and aid workers said could be anything from a restructuring to an effort to significantly downsize, if not eliminate, most U.S. foreign aid programs.

But Democratic lawmakers said they feared a potentially bleak endgame for the aid agency.

“All the signals of how the senior staff have been put on administrative leave, many of the field staff and headquarters staff have been put on a gag order,” Senator Chris Coons, Democrat of Delaware, who sits on the Senate panels on foreign relations and appropriations, said Saturday afternoon in an interview.

“It seems more like the early stages of shutting down than it does of reviewing it or merely retitling it,” he added.

U.S.A.I.D. is the government’s lead agency for humanitarian aid and development assistance. Since it was established in 1961, it has received foreign policy guidance from the State Department, but otherwise functioned as an independent entity.

Foreign assistance distributed by the agency, which supports health services, disaster relief, anti-poverty efforts and a range of other programs, makes up less than 1 percent of the government budget.

In January, the Trump administration ordered a freeze to nearly all foreign aid programs and later issued a waiver to allow programs that administer lifesaving humanitarian aid to keep functioning.

The changes to U.S.A.I.D.’s structure that staff and advocates are fearing are presenting a further complication to groups that were already scrambling to figure out how to keep programs afloat during the funding freeze.

Lawmakers have argued Mr. Trump cannot unilaterally shutter the agency legally, as it was created by Congress and receives specific appropriations. The federal government, including U.S.A.I.D., is currently funded through March 14.

“Trump isn’t satisfied just to close programs and fire staff. He is now planning to ELIMINATE THE ENTIRE AGENCY. Maybe this weekend,” Senator Chris Murphy, Democrat of Connecticut, wrote on social media on Saturday. “That would be illegal. He cannot unilaterally close a federal agency. Another assault on the Constitution.”

Lawmakers have also warned that if U.S.A.I.D.’s operations are scaled back indefinitely, it will enable China, Russia, Iran and other U.S. adversaries to gain strategic footholds overseas that would damage U.S. security in the long term.

“Eliminating USAID — which prevents famines, counters extremism, and creates more markets for U.S. exports — would make the world a more dangerous place for Americans and be a gift to China and Russia,” Senator Amy Klobuchar, Democrat of Minnesota, said in a social media post on Saturday.

Sheera Frenkel, Nicholas Nehamas, Edward Wong and Michael Crowley contributed reporting.

As the future of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) hangs in the balance, Democratic lawmakers are warning that the end may be near for the crucial aid agency.

In a recent statement, members of Congress expressed their concerns over proposed budget cuts and restructuring plans that could severely hamper USAID’s ability to provide vital assistance to countries in need. The agency, which has been a cornerstone of U.S. foreign aid efforts for decades, plays a crucial role in promoting development, democracy, and stability around the world.

Lawmakers are calling on the Biden administration to prioritize funding for USAID and ensure that it remains a key player in U.S. foreign policy. They argue that cutting or dismantling the agency would not only harm vulnerable populations in developing countries, but also undermine America’s standing as a global leader.

As the debate over the future of USAID continues, it is clear that the stakes are high. The fate of millions of people who rely on U.S. assistance hangs in the balance, and Democratic lawmakers are urging the administration to take action before it’s too late. The end may be near for USAID, but with the right support and funding, the agency can continue to make a positive impact around the world.

  • Juventus’ rumored deal for Lens defender Kevin Danso appears to be a no-go

As the day came to a close Thursday, it looked as though Juventus had secured (or were at least close to securing) the services of another central defender on a short-term loan deal in the form of RC Lens’ Kevin Danso.

Less than 24 hours later, it looks like the talks between Juventus and Lens are very much not proving to be as fruitful as they were the day before.

According to reports from Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto on Friday, Juventus’ chances of signing Danso look very much not as close to what they were when news broke of Cristiano Giuntoli being close to closing a deal for the 26-year-old Austrian on Thursday. Instead, talks reportedly continued between the two clubs without much of a final closing of the deal, with La Gazzetta dello Sport’s Giovanni Albanese saying an agreement wasn’t actually reached between Juve and Lens despite Danso’s desire to secure a move to Turin.

Because of a Danso deal not getting closed, Romano says Juventus “are focusing on different targets” in the center of defense.

When news broke that Juve had agreed to a deal for Danso, it was reported by multiple outlets that they had agreed to a short-term loan worth €2.5 million plus another €1.5 million in bonuses. As previously stated, Danso was pushing for the move, and Juve’s interest in him had stretched back at least a couple of weeks.

But, with hindsight, it appears things weren’t as close to being done as we thought.

With Pierre Kalulu suddenly out for at least a couple of weeks, it was easy to figure out that Giuntoli wanted to bring in another defender so that Federico Gatti and another short-term loan signing, Renato Veiga, weren’t the only two natural center backs heading into a busy month of February. Danso appeared to be that player and that he was going to arrive before Deadline Day on Monday.

So much for that, I guess. Time to figure something else out — which is a thought process that has crossed my mind regarding Juventus’ transfer activity way too much lately.

According to recent reports, Juventus’ rumored deal for Lens defender Kevin Danso appears to be a no-go. Despite initial interest from the Italian giants, it seems that negotiations have hit a roadblock and a deal is unlikely to be reached.

Danso, who has been impressive for Lens in Ligue 1 this season, was reportedly on Juventus’ radar as they looked to bolster their defensive options. However, it seems that Lens are unwilling to part ways with the talented defender, especially in the midst of a successful campaign.

While Juventus may have to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements, Danso’s future at Lens looks secure for now. It remains to be seen if any other clubs will make a move for the 23-year-old in the upcoming transfer window. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Rihanna appears again at A$AP Rocky’s gun assault trial as ex-friend testifies | A$AP Rocky

The most important testimony at the trial of the rapper A$AP Rocky got second billing for a second day as superstar Rihanna sat quietly in the audience.

Rihanna, A$AP Rocky’s partner, appeared at his Los Angeles trial again on Thursday, sitting between his sister and mother.

Rocky, whose legal name is Rakim Athelston Mayers, is facing trial on two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, accused by a former friend, A$AP Relli, of firing a gun at him in 2021.

A$AP Relli, who was born Terell Ephron, faced a fierce cross-examination on Thursday, bristling under questioning from Rocky’s lawyer and at one point shouting at the defendant. The judge briefly called a recess so the prosecution and Relli’s lawyer could instruct him how to respond properly in court.

Before that could happen, Relli shouted, “You did this to yourself!” to Rocky, prompting an admonishment from the judge.

“Do not talk to the defendant!” the judge, Mark Arnold, shouted at him.

Relli grew frustrated by the questions asked by Rocky’s attorney. The defense showed screenshots of Relli’s Instagram posts in an attempt to contradict his earlier testimony that he had a positive relationship with Rocky before the shooting, but that he’d been so shunned for coming forward that his business was ruined and that he had no social media presence.

Relli is suing Rocky’s defense attorney Joe Tacopina for libel in civil court for his public statements, and suing Rocky over the incident. The defense has sought to highlight the lawsuits in order to cast him as someone seeking money from a false story and has said his account of what happened has changed over time.

Relli argued that although details of his story may have shifted over the past three years, his fading memory doesn’t change what fundamentally happened.

“A gun was pulled on me. It was pointed at me, and it was fired later,” Relli said on Thursday.

In testimony in previous days, Relli has described the night in November 2021 when he and Rocky, their relationship straining, had a confrontation and scuffled on a Hollywood street, and Rocky pointed a gun at him before walking away.

Relli testified that he was shouting at Rocky as he walked after him, then Rocky pulled the gun again and held it in the air.

“He turned around and then it was like BOOM!” Relli told the jury. “The whole thing was like a movie, he kind of like pointed down and he shot the first shot.”

He said he felt a burning on his hand where a bullet grazed it.

Relli testified Rocky fired another shot that he didn’t see because he had hidden behind a mutual friend.

He said, “I felt my hand hot,” and later added: “I was hit. Or I was grazed. I didn’t have a hole or nothing.”

Rocky’s lawyer says the shots he fired were not even from a real gun – they were blanks from a starter pistol that he carried as a prop. The lawyer said Relli knew this, and that was why he was so fearless walking after him.

“Oh it was a real gun,” Relli testified under prosecution questioning, saying he knew because of his scraped hand.

Since the shooting and his decision to go to police and testify, he said he had received death threats, been shunned as a snitch and saw the modest music management career he built fall apart.

“It’s been a living hell,” Relli said.

About an hour after the shooting, Relli returned to the scene and said he photographed and recovered two shell casings. Earlier, while responding to a report of a shooting, police did not find any.

He sent a text to Rocky that was shown in court saying: “U try killing me.”

Rocky denied it in his reply: “Bro wtf is u talkin bout why u tell ppl I shot at u.”

He sent Rocky photos of the shell casings and his grazed hand.

Rocky said he was making stuff up and speaking “all type of nonsense” and was trying to “extort” him.

The judge in the case ruled on Thursday morning that Relli’s social media posts capturing what seems like a luxury lifestyle after the incident would be fair game for questioning.

Rihanna appears again at A$AP Rocky’s gun assault trial as ex-friend testifies

Pop sensation Rihanna made another appearance at A$AP Rocky’s ongoing gun assault trial, as a former friend of the rapper took the stand to testify against him. The ex-friend, who has not been named, alleged that A$AP Rocky had threatened him with a gun during a heated altercation last year.

This latest development in the trial has only added to the drama surrounding the case, which has garnered widespread media attention since A$AP Rocky’s arrest. Rihanna, who has been a vocal supporter of the rapper throughout the trial, has been spotted attending court hearings and showing her solidarity with A$AP Rocky.

The singer’s presence at the trial has only served to heighten the public interest in the case, with fans eagerly awaiting the outcome of the trial. As the proceedings continue, all eyes will be on Rihanna and A$AP Rocky as they navigate this challenging legal battle together.

  • Allegheny Township Big Lots appears to be in jeopardy as partial liquidation unfolds

The future of Big Lots’ footprint in Western Pennsylvania remains unclear, but it’s not looking good for the Allegheny Township location.

Its lease was recently available for transfer, which is a sign it could close as part of the struggling bargain retailer’s acquisition by a Boston-based asset liquidation firm.

Locations in North Versailles, West Mifflin and Whitehall also made the list posted earlier this month by buyer Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, along with roughly 460 other stores in 47 states.

The stores are mostly located in shopping plazas and range in size from about 19,000 to 55,000 square feet, the firm noted on the sale website.

David Rosen, Big Lots’ landlord in Allegheny Township, did not immediately return a request for comment. The company is the last tenant in Rosen’s shopping plaza off Route 56.

    Will others be spared?

The other 20-or-so Big Lots stores in Western Pennsylvania may have better prospects.

Stores in Harrison, Hempfield, Monroeville, Penn Hills, Ross Township, Unity and other areas could stay open as part of 200 to 400 unnamed locations transferred to North Carolina-based Variety Wholesalers through the deal with Gordon Brothers.

Up to two distribution centers, including the one in Tremont, Pa., could be saved, too.

Variety Wholesalers, which operates more than 400 stores in the U.S. — mostly under the Roses and Roses Express names — has said it plans to run its latest acquisitions as Big Lots and may retain employees in the process.

In a statement announcing the sale, Big Lots President and CEO Bruce Thorn said the deal presents the “strongest opportunity to preserve jobs, maximize value for the real estate and ensure continuity of the Big Lots brand.”

The company has been seeking a buyer for many months and filed for bankruptcy protection in September.

Gordon Brothers emerged as a buyer after Nexus Capital Management backed out of a sale agreement.

Messages left with Gordon Brothers and Variety Wholesalers seeking location-specific information were not immediately returned.

The Big Lots website seems to indicate nothing is final.

A banner reads: “All stores closing: now save up to 40% entire store.”

It seems that the Big Lots store in Allegheny Township may be in jeopardy, as a partial liquidation sale is currently underway. Customers have noticed signs throughout the store advertising discounts on various items, leading to speculation that the store may be closing its doors for good.

The news has caused concern among residents who rely on the store for affordable household goods and other necessities. Many have expressed their disappointment on social media, with some even starting a petition to save the store.

While there has been no official announcement from Big Lots regarding the fate of the Allegheny Township location, the signs of a liquidation sale are certainly cause for concern. Residents are encouraged to show their support for the store by shopping there and spreading the word about the potential closure.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.

  • ‘MLB The Show 25’ cover athlete leaked? Reds star Elly De La Cruz appears to announce he’s headlining video game

‘MLB The Show’ is an annually released baseball video game by San Diego Studios. Similar to Madden for NFL or 2K for NBA, it is the main gaming franchise for baseball fans.

While there isn’t a Madden-esque curse involved with the cover athlete selection, fans are always curious on who will grace the cover. It also feels like Madden or 2K tends to select a top player in the league, while recently, MLB the Show has used its platform to elevate a lesser known player to give fans an inside look into their personality.

While not officially released yet by San Diego Studios, it appears that Reds star shortstop Elly De La Cruz has leaked that he will grace the cover of ‘MLB the Show 25’, which is expected to release sometime in March.

Why is Elly De La Cruz ‘MLB The Show’ cover athlete?

De La Cruz has been an instant hit with fans since being called up by Cincinnati in 2023. He is hard to miss, standing at 6-foot-5 while ironically playing a position with the word “short” in it. De La Cruz is a scary blend of power and speed. Through 258 games in his career, he has stolen 102 bases and hit 38 home runs. If he can get a little more consistent at the plate, there is a real chance that he is able to average a 40-40 season.

The Cincinnati faithful had been tracking De La Cruz’s rise up through the minors, but most fans first learned about him when he got the call up to the majors. It’s always a big deal when players get called up the first time, and De La Cruz had about as good of a reaction as anyone. He even reached base safely three times in his debut.

Cincinnati has smartly started building around De La Cruz. With his blend of size, speed and power, he should develop into the face of the franchise if he can lower his strikeout rate. He is a highlight reel waiting to happen, especially given how much he likes stealing home.

List of ‘MLB The Show’ cover athletes

De La Cruz becomes the 19th cover athlete of the annual video game release. He follows in Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s footsteps, who was on the cover of MLB The Show 24.

2025 Elly De La Cruz Reds

Fans of the popular baseball video game series MLB The Show may have gotten an early look at who will be gracing the cover of the upcoming installment, as Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz seems to have accidentally leaked the news.

In a recent social media post, De La Cruz shared a photo of himself holding what appears to be a mock-up of the MLB The Show 25 cover, complete with his own likeness front and center. While the post has since been deleted, many fans were quick to grab screenshots and share the news across various platforms.

If the leak is indeed accurate, this would mark the first time that De La Cruz has been featured on the cover of the popular video game series. The young outfielder has been making a name for himself in the MLB with his impressive play on the field, and it seems that he may now be getting some recognition in the gaming world as well.

Of course, it’s important to take this news with a grain of salt until an official announcement is made by the developers of MLB The Show. But if this leak turns out to be true, fans of the game can look forward to seeing Elly De La Cruz on the cover of MLB The Show 25 when it is released later this year. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available!

  • Elon Musk admits cheating at video games, chat transcript appears to show | Elon Musk

Elon Musk admitted he cheated at video games to get high scores, a transcript of a private online conversation he had shows, seemingly concluding a fiery scandal over the billionaire’s outlandish claims to be a globally-ranked player.

Musk has regularly bragged about his gaming rankings. He told the podcaster Joe Rogan last year that he was in the top 20 players in the world for the fiendishly difficult action role-playing game Diablo IV.

His claims have raised questions about how the world’s richest man could find time to compete internationally. He would need to have played hundreds of hours in between running businesses including Tesla Inc, X and SpaceX, as well as his growing political activity alongside Donald Trump.

Two games Musk says he has high scores in, Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2, are notoriously hard to compete in. Some players spend most of their waking hours “grinding” through dungeons and battling monsters and other fantastical creatures to make their virtual characters more powerful.

An answer to Musk’s unlikely gaming prowess was provided in a video posted on YouTube on Sunday by the top Diablo player NikoWrex, which showed what he said was a direct message conversation with Musk on X.

In the conversation, Musk admits to “account boosting”, a cheating practice in which people get other players to power up their characters. This is usually done by paying them to play for hours.

“Have you level boosted (had someone else play your accounts) and/or purchased gear/resources for PoE2 [Path of Exile 2] and Diablo 4?” asked NikoWrex. Musk responded with a 100% emoji. He later added: “It’s impossible to beat the players in Asia if you don’t, as they do!”

The Guardian could not independently verify the transcript, but Musk reposted the video to his X account and had previously interacted with NikoWrex on X in early January to discuss Path of Exile 2. In his video, NikoWrex, whose Instagram account says is called Nick Hayes, showed that Musk follows him on X.

He said in the video that Musk had permitted him to publish their conversation. The Guardian has contacted Musk through X for comment.

Uproar about Musk’s alleged video game prowess exploded after his comments on Rogan’s podcast in November, and further scrutiny came at the beginning of the year when he did a livestream of his Path of Exile 2 character on X.

High-level players with deep knowledge of the game said Musk made rookie mistakes that no expert would make, including walking straight past valuable items that would help his character.

After being called out, Musk began to fight the allegations publicly, getting into arguments with prominent gamers. At the end of the conversation with NikoWrex, Musk claimed to be “a living god of video games”.

The Canadian musician Grimes, who has three children with Musk from a previous relationship, tweeted in his defence on Saturday, saying she had seen with her own eyes how he was a top Diablo player in the US. “There are other witnesses who can verify this,” she said.

On Monday, further allegations of cheating were levelled when Musk’s Path of Exile 2 character was seen as active in the game while Musk was in Washington attending Trump’s inauguration.

, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has recently come under fire after a chat transcript surfaced that appears to show him admitting to cheating at video games.

In the chat transcript, Musk is allegedly seen bragging about using cheats and hacks to gain an unfair advantage in online multiplayer games. The conversation, which took place on a gaming forum, has sparked outrage among gamers and fans alike, many of whom see Musk’s actions as unethical and unsportsmanlike.

Musk has yet to respond to the allegations, but the chat transcript has already gone viral on social media, with many calling for him to be held accountable for his actions. It remains to be seen how this controversy will affect Musk’s reputation and public image, but one thing is clear: cheating at video games is never okay, no matter who you are.

  • With Rays’ stadium deal in jeopardy, owner Stuart Sternberg’s tenure appears headed for a crossroads

Stuart Sternberg of the Tampa Bay Rays is one of baseball’s most successful, impactful owners in the past 20 years. But if Sternberg cannot salvage the Rays’ stadium deal in St. Petersburg, then he should sell the club to a group that would stand a greater chance of getting a park built in Tampa, where the team would be better positioned to thrive.

This is not to shout “Stu must go!” the way one might with other owners, from the Athletics’ John Fisher to the Chicago White Sox’s Jerry Reinsdorf, the Colorado Rockies’ Dick Monfort to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bob Nutting to the Los Angeles Angels’ Arte Moreno. Nor is to lament, “Poor Stu,” for an owner who is sitting on $600 million of public funding for a new park, and in the wake of two devastating hurricanes in the Tampa Bay region, wanting more.

Sternberg’s tenure, however, appears headed for a crossroads. His team lost its current ballpark for at least the 2025 season when Hurricane Milton blew the roof off of Tropicana Field on Oct. 9. And the Rays’ deal for a new park on the same site is in jeopardy as Sternberg and other club officials clamor for more money to cover possible cost overruns.

Time is running short. The Rays must meet specific funding and design requirements by March 31 for Pinellas County to issue the necessary bonds for its $312.5 million contribution to the new park. And MLB commissioner Rob Manfred does not want the team to relocate out of the market, repeating to The Athletic what he has said numerous times publicly: “My goal is to make baseball work in the Tampa Bay region.”

Manfred declined further comment. Sternberg declined comment entirely. And while Manfred’s lobbying of the county commissioners to approve financing last month could be interpreted as putting the politicians on notice that the team could bolt, he is taking a different approach with Sternberg than he did with Fisher and the A’s.

The two situations are not identical.

Tampa-St. Pete is a vibrant market in a fast-growing state. The A’s were second-class citizens in the Bay Area, which at the time was the smallest two-team market in baseball.

The Rays have a ballpark deal in place with their city and county. The league concluded, justifiably or not, that no deal was possible in Oakland, clearing Fisher to leave for Las Vegas.

An out-of-state relocation prompted in part by a natural disaster would be unseemly, and perhaps unwarranted. Another owner, one with deeper pockets, might be more successful than Sternberg was in persuading officials in neighboring Tampa and Hillsborough County to finance a new ballpark. Fisher is investing $1 billion into the construction of the Vegas park. Sternberg is at $700 million with his project and does not want to go higher.

Another factor: Manfred might not be comfortable with a second team relocating to a market in which the league might want to expand. The A’s took away one such market, and while the league did not charge Fisher a relocation fee, it instituted a 10-year flip tax to penalize him if he used the relocation to sell the club at an inflated price. If Fisher sells before 2029, he will be taxed 20 percent of the purchase price, to be split among the other owners, according to a source briefed on the details. The tax would decrease each year through 2033.

Unlike with the A’s, the league considers Tampa Bay too valuable to vacate for say, Nashville or Raleigh-Durham, even if Sternberg’s best chance of extracting maximum value in a sale is in one of those markets. The problem is, Sternberg does not seem especially welcome in either Tampa or St. Pete. Which is unfortunate, considering how he transformed his franchise from a laughingstock into the envy of small-market and even large-market clubs.

The Rays are a modern baseball miracle, ranking sixth in the majors in wins since Sternberg became managing general partner in October 2005. They’ve played in the 2008 and 2020 World Series, developed innovative strategies, populated the sport with top executives. And they accomplished all this while routinely running bottom-five payrolls and ranking in the bottom four in attendance every year since 2010.

Before the hurricane, Sternberg was on track for arguably his biggest achievement yet — the end of the Rays’ 17-year quest for a new park. But the storm was the initial trigger for the county commissioners to postpone their approval of financing. The delay, in the Rays’ view, pushed back the proposed opening of the new park from 2028 to ‘29, creating financial consequences for the club, which is responsible for cost overruns.

The team, in a letter to the county commissioners on Nov. 19, said, “A 2029 delivery would result in significantly higher costs that we are not able to absorb alone.” Sternberg told the Tampa Bay Times: “Last month, the County Commission upended our ballpark agreement by not approving their bonds, as they promised to do. That action sent a clear message that we had lost the county as a partner. The future of baseball in Tampa Bay became less certain after that vote.”

The Rays pledged $700 million to the construction of the park before any overruns, and have not specified how much more they desire. They already expect to generate lower revenues for at least this season while playing at the Yankees’ spring training stadium in Tampa. Waiting one more year for the construction of their new park would mean waiting one more year for the greater revenues the new facility would provide.

The delay in the county’s approval, however, turned out to be only seven weeks. The city of St. Petersburg approved bonds to finance its $287.5 million contribution in the interim. Whether the park in St. Pete still could open by 2028 is debatable. But coming in the aftermath of the hurricane, Sternberg’s aggressive posture did not endear him to the county commissioners. One said he withdrew his opposition to the project only after a conversation with Manfred.

“While I do not trust the owner of the Rays, I trust Mr. Manfred. He is the reason I am voting yes,” county commissioner Chris Latvala said after the financing passed on Dec. 17.

Other officials also went public with their distaste for Sternberg, damaging the team’s reputation as it tries to do business in the community and further souring the relationship between the two sides, according to a Rays official who was granted anonymity for his candor. (The inability of the Rays to play at Tropicana Field this season automatically extended the team’s lease by one year, through 2028.)

Tampa officials also are said to be lukewarm toward Sternberg. An effort in 2017 to build a park in Tampa’s Ybor City area never came to fruition. Nor did Sternberg’s proposal to split the Rays’ home games between Tampa and Montreal, an idea the league quashed in 2022 and amounted to another failed attempt, even if the decision was beyond Sternberg’s control.

So, if Sternberg can’t complete a ballpark deal in either city and the league doesn’t want to lose the market, the logical solution is for him to sell to interests in Tampa who could get the Ybor City park built, once and for all. Potential buyers in Tampa exist, according to sources who are briefed on the matter but would not reveal the identities of the likely bidders. Sternberg periodically has engaged in sale conversations. The question is whether he could get his price.

Sternberg led a partnership that bought the Rays for a reported $200 million in 2004. Forbes last March valued the team at $1.25 billion, fourth-lowest in the league. The uncertainty over where the Rays will play if Tropicana Field is not repaired by 2026 might dampen the enthusiasm of potential buyers. Sternberg also might factor into the price the 1/30th share he or a new owner would receive once the league expands by two teams. If the expansion fee for each club is $2 billion, each of the existing teams would receive about $133 million.

The proposed ballpark in St. Petersburg is part of a $6.5 billion redevelopment project that also is part of Sternberg’s financial equation. Even if the ballpark deal collapses, the Rays and their real-estate partner Hines still might control the redevelopment project, adding another level of complexity to the overall picture.

Getting a ballpark built is never easy. The hurricane only added to the Rays’ degree of difficulty. And even if the park in St. Pete gets done, who’s to say the Rays won’t end up like the Miami Marlins, locked into a 30-year commitment in a city where they have yet to succeed? Sternberg, a native of Brooklyn who now lives in St. Pete, seems to be one of the few who believes baseball can work in his adopted city.

Then again, maybe Sternberg knows better. Brian Scott, chairman of the Pinellas County commissioners, said in November he believed it was possible the Rays were looking for a way out of the ballpark deal. It would be the most cynical of plays. But considering all the Rays are up against — the financial damage caused by the hurricane, the potential increase in the cost of the new park, the loss of rare positive momentum — it would be understandable if Sternberg was having second thoughts.

The team’s experience at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa this season might be telling. The capacity of the park is only 11,026. Many fans might be excited to see a major-league product in an intimate minor-league setting. But if the Rays generate greater buzz in Tampa than they do in St. Petersburg, it will only reinforce the perception that they have spent nearly three decades playing in the wrong city.

Sternberg’s past and present employees swear by him. The team’s performance reflects well on him. If somehow the Rays can bridge the funding gap — through corporate support, government support, whatever it takes — perhaps this whole thing still could work. If not, then Sternberg should get out, and sell to an ownership group willing to make a greater investment and negotiate a ballpark deal in Tampa. It might be the best outcome for all.

The future of the Tampa Bay Rays’ stadium deal is uncertain, and with it, owner Stuart Sternberg’s tenure with the team is at a crossroads. The proposed stadium deal, which would have seen the Rays move to a new stadium in Ybor City, has hit a roadblock, leaving the team’s future in limbo.

Sternberg, who has been the owner of the Rays since 2005, has been vocal about the need for a new stadium in order to keep the team competitive. However, with the current deal in jeopardy, it seems that Sternberg’s vision for the team’s future may be in danger.

If the stadium deal falls through, it could have significant implications for the Rays and for Sternberg. The team may be forced to consider other options, such as relocating to a different city or staying in their current stadium, which is widely considered to be outdated.

As the owner of the team, Sternberg will likely face tough decisions in the coming months as he navigates the uncertain future of the Rays. Whether he can find a solution to the stadium issue and secure the team’s long-term future remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: his tenure with the Rays is at a crossroads.
