With spring approaching, what does the Farmers’ Almanac predict for Columbus?
Spring is almost here, bringing thoughts of sunny days, warm breezes and blooming flowers (and no snow). It also brings thoughts of unceasing rain, soggy ground and chilly temperatures.
Is Ohio in for a pleasant, spring or summer? Or is a dour, rainy spring more likely?
The Farmers’ Almanac—which has been predicting the weather since 1818—has the answer to those questions. Here is what it predicts for spring.
Farmers’ Almanac spring prediction for Columbus
Ohio and the Midwest region will have a “cool, showery” spring, according to the almanac.
It will not start right away. Winter weather will linger past the vernal equinox on March 20.
Once spring does set in, plenty of showers and thunderstorms are expected. Ohio is also expected to have below-normal temperatures even through June, according to the almanac.
What does the National Weather Service predict for spring?
The National Weather Service’s three-month outlook predicts Ohio will likely experience above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation February through April.
What will the weather be like for Easter?
The Farmers’ Almanac predicts a fair, unsettled Easter for Ohio. Unsettled weather occurs when atmospheric conditions are conducive to precipitation, according to NOAA.
What is La Nina?
La Niña is a recurring climate pattern that occurs when trade winds that push warm water west from South America toward Asia are stronger than usual. Colder water rises to the surface to replenish the warm water pushed off to Asia, which in turn affects weather patterns in the U.S., The Dispatch previously reported.
A cooler Pacific Ocean causes the Pacific jet stream, a fast-moving current of air that circles the globe, to move north, leading to colder and wetter conditions in northern states like Ohio and warmer and drier conditions in the southern U.S., according to the National Weather Service.
The U.S. is currently experiencing La Niña, and there is a 59% chance of it persisting February through April, according to NOAA.

Alerts issued for flash flooding, high winds from approaching storm system
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Several severe weather alerts will be taking effect as a strong winter storms system approaches Hawaii.
The HNN First Alert Weather Team earlier declared a First Alert Weather Day statewide from Wednesday night through Friday morning.
The National Weather Service says a Flood Watch will be in effect for all main Hawaiian islands from Wednesday evening through Friday morning.
A High Wind Watch will also take effect statewide Wednesday evening through late Thursday night for strong southwest winds of 20 to 35 miles per hour with gusts near 55 miles per hour.
The strongest winds are expected over windward and mauka areas of Kauai and Oahu. However, parts of Maui County and Hawaii Island may also see strong and potentially damaging winds.
A Winter Storm Watch will be in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday morning for the summits of Haleakala, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
Periods of snow and mixed precipitation will be possible, with the potential of snow accumulations of up to ten inches for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, and up to four inches for the summit area of Haleakala.
A light glaze of ice will also be possible on roads and other surfaces as temperatures drop below freezing.
The storm system may also impact mariners in waters around Kauai, where a Gale Watch will be posted from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon. There’s a chance for strong winds causing hazardous seas that can capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.
The severe weather conditions are expected from the strong winter low pressure system that is forecast to develop west of the state on Wednesday and then pass to the north of Kauai on Thursday, with an associated cold front bringing a chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms over the western end of the state starting Wednesday evening.

Hubert Davis Approaching UNC Starting Lineup as Fluid Situation
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Hubert Davis made changes to North Carolina’s starting lineup during the weekend for the fourth time this season, and the coach said Monday that his team’s first group won’t be carved in stone as the Tar Heels move forward through ACC basketball league play.
Already small UNC downsized even more two days ago, returning 6-foot-3 Seth Trimble and 6-8 Ven-Allen Lubin to the opening lineup against Boston College, while shifting 6-6 Drake Powell and 6-10 Jalen Washington to the bench.
Those moves meant the Tar Heels rolled out four guards who are listed at 6-4 or shorter, with Elliot Cadeau, RJ Davis and Ian Jackson remaining in place in the starting lineup. UNC went on to rotate and use Powell (27 minutes of action off the bench) and Washington (26 minutes of action off the bench) plenty in different lineup combinations as the game extended into overtime.
“It’s a fluid situation,” Hubert Davis said Monday on the weekly videoconference call for ACC basketball coaches, when asked about his approach on starting assignments at this juncture of the season. “It’s matchups in regard to starting the game, the rotations. It is a fluid situation. It’s not fluid in some positions, but in other positions it is fluid. It’s all determined, really, on the rhythm of us and just the matchups in terms of who we’re playing. And so every game, I look at it that way. There isn’t going to be a set five. It will be determined by matchups and how guys are playing and rotations. There’s a number of factors that will go into who starts the game.”
Carolina (13-8 overall, 6-3 ACC) travels to tangle with Pittsburgh (13-6, 4-4) on Tuesday night, a matchup that closes the month of January for the Tar Heels and sets in motion a pivotal portion of the conference schedule. Across the next four games, UNC has road stops at Pitt, Duke and Clemson — all of them opportunities to secure profitable Quad 1 victories in the NET rankings — with a Feb. 8 home date against Pitt sandwiched in between. By the night of Feb. 10, when UNC plays at Clemson, the Tar Heels’ NCAA Tournament résumé will have taken on a clearer shape.
Lubin had put together a three-game stretch of serviceable contributions, averaging 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds off the bench against California, Stanford and Wake Forest, prior to UNC overcoming Boston College 102-96 in overtime. Washington, though, became a major factor against BC with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. He tied a career high in scoring, and his playing time doubled Lubin’s 13 minutes of game action.
Meanwhile, Trimble logged 42 minutes of game time, the most for any Carolina player against BC. He was back in UNC’s starting lineup after an eight-game absence, and responded by delivering 18 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. Trimble supplied the Tar Heels’ last four points of regulation, including a left-handed turnaround in the lane that tied the score with 12.9 seconds remaining.
Ven-Allen Lubin, left, and Seth Trimble returned to the UNC starting lineup against Boston College. Trimble started the first 12 games of the season, before suffering a concussion during a Dec. 28 practice session. After UNC survived BC, Trimble said Hubert Davis hadn’t mentioned his reasoning for changing the starting lineup this time around.
Cadeau and RJ Davis have started all 21 games for the Tar Heels. Veteran forward Jae’Lyn Withers started UNC’s first seven games of the season, until the freshman Powell replaced him during the Maui Invitational. Lubin has five starting assignments in the post, and Washington has compiled the other 16. The freshman Jackson has started nine straight games, and produced a scoring average of 18.6 points per game across that span.
“The four-guard lineup worked against UCLA really well, and then we practiced it a little bit after that,” Trimble said Saturday, referring to Carolina’s rally past the Bruins four days before Christmas. “But then I got hurt. So maybe we would’ve gone to that before now, but I don’t know. I’m just here to play, no matter what.”
Pitt certainly doesn’t lack for size with a starting group that includes 6-10 bruiser Cameron Corhen and 7-footer Guillermo Diaz Graham, along with 6-7 forward Zack Austin. The Panthers bring 6-5 guard Damian Dunn off the bench as a sixth man, and also rotate in 6-3 guard Brandin Cummings, 6-11 forward Jorge Diaz Graham and 6-8 forward Amsal Delalić as subs.
But Pitt has been out-rebounded in ACC league play by an average of 5.1 boards per game. And the Tar Heels, for all of their limitations down low, are out-rebounding their ACC opponents by a margin of 2.1 boards per game. Carolina has lost the rebounding battle to Louisville, Stanford and Wake Forest in its three conference defeats. UNC grabbed a healthy 36-23 rebounding advantage two days ago against Boston College, including 12-6 on the offensive glass.
Pitt’s pair of 6-3 guards, Jaland Lowe (17.6 points per game) and Ishmael Leggett (16.6 points per game), lead the team in scoring on the season. Near the end of last season, the lefty Lowe finished with 17 points against UNC in the ACC Tournament semifinals.
“What’s going to be huge for us the remainder of the ACC is, how consistent can we be?” Hubert Davis said Monday. “How consistent can we be offensively taking good shots, taking care of the basketball. How consistent can we be defensively getting stops, rebounding and defending without fouling. It just is what it is. That’s just going to be the key for us, our consistency.”
Hubert Davis Approaching UNC Starting Lineup as Fluid SituationAs the North Carolina Tar Heels prepare for the upcoming college basketball season, new head coach Hubert Davis is taking a flexible approach to determining his starting lineup. With a deep and talented roster at his disposal, Davis recognizes the importance of keeping his options open and adapting to different matchups and situations.
Davis has made it clear that he values competition and is willing to make changes to the starting lineup based on performance in practice and games. He has emphasized the need for players to earn their minutes and prove themselves on both ends of the court.
One player who has already caught Davis’ eye is freshman guard D’Marco Dunn, who has shown impressive scoring ability and defensive intensity in early practices. Dunn could potentially earn a spot in the starting lineup if he continues to impress.
Davis has also praised the leadership and experience of veterans like Leaky Black and Brady Manek, who could play key roles in the starting lineup depending on the opponent.
Overall, Davis is embracing the challenge of managing a deep and talented roster and is focused on putting together the best lineup for each game. With a fluid approach to the starting lineup, the Tar Heels will be a team to watch this season as they strive for success in the ACC and beyond.

An asteroid the size of a school bus is set to zoom by the Earth on Tuesday, traveling several times faster than a speeding bullet.
The asteroid, named 2025 BS4, is said by NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to be roughly 22 feet in diameter, with JPL’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) estimated that it could be between 17 and 40 feet across.
The average American school bus is roughly 35 to 40 feet long, for reference.
The asteroid has a speed of 16.02 km/s, or about 35,835 mph, while the fastest bullets can only travel about 1,800 mph.

ISTOCK / GETTY IMAGES PLUS
2025 BS4 is due to fly past our planet at a distance of about 511,000 miles, roughly twice the distance of the moon’s 238,900-mile orbit around our planet.
Asteroids in our solar system are mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Occasionally, interactions with the gravity of the planets can cause an asteroid to be ejected from this reservoir, zooming into the inner solar system and in the vicinity of Earth.
“Space is three dimensional—whilst there are a huge number of comets and asteroids out there, most of them move on orbits that don’t perfectly intersect with that of the Earth—even if they do cross where our orbit is in terms of the distance from the Sun, they usually pass harmlessly well above or below the Earth,” Jonti Horner, an astrophysics professor at Australia’s University of Southern Queensland, told Newsweek.
Due to its proximity to the Earth, 2025 BS4 is classified as a near-Earth object (NEO), which are defined as objects that come within about 120 million miles of the sun, or 30 million miles of Earth.
Objects and asteroids that come within around 4.6 million miles of the Earth and have a diameter of at least 460 feet.
“A PHA is one that has an orbit intersecting the Earth’s orbit around the sun by less than 0.05 astronomical units (1 AU is the distance to the Sun), that’s just over 4.5 million miles,” Martin Barstow, a professor of astrophysics and space science at the University of Leicester in the U.K., previously told Newsweek.
“It also has to have an absolute brightness of 22.0 or less (lower values of the magnitude are brighter = larger objects), i.e. an asteroid (or comet) that would cause significant regional damage if it hit the Earth,” he said. “Not all NEOs are potentially hazardous, but all hazardous objects are NEOs.”
2025 BS4 is not large enough to be considered a PHA, however, so is only classified as an NEO. According to NASA, this asteroid has a 0.000013 chance of hitting us at any point in the future.
There are several other NEO asteroids making close fly-bys of the Earth over the next few days, including the 100-foot 2025 BH2 passing at a distance of 4,280,000 miles today, the 36-foot 2025 BF5 coming within 797,000 miles of us tomorrow, and the 51-foot 2025 BS2 missing us by 2,330,000 on Wednesday.
Do you have a tip on a science story that Newsweek should be covering? Do you have a question about asteroids? Let us know via science@newsweek.com.
NASA has announced that they are currently tracking a bus-size asteroid that is hurtling towards Earth at an alarming speed of 30,000 miles per hour. The asteroid, known as 2021 KT1, is expected to make a close approach to our planet in the coming days. While there is no immediate threat of a collision, NASA scientists are closely monitoring the asteroid’s trajectory to ensure the safety of Earth. The asteroid is estimated to be around 200 feet in diameter, making it roughly the size of a small bus.
This close encounter serves as a reminder of the importance of NASA’s efforts to track and monitor near-Earth objects. By studying these asteroids, scientists can better understand the potential risks they pose and develop strategies to mitigate any potential threats.
As of now, there is no need for alarm, but it is always fascinating to witness the wonders of our universe up close. Stay tuned for updates on this asteroid as it makes its way past Earth in the coming days.

Michigan State’s Tom Izzo approaching Big Ten wins record: ‘Supersedes all my dreams’
When asked what he would have said had someone told him on Nov. 4, the opening day of the college basketball season, that his team would be 16-2 and sitting atop the Big Ten standings after winning 11 consecutive games, Tom Izzo didn’t hold anything back.
“You must be on something,” Izzo said.
For a Spartans team that was chosen fifth by the media in the Big Ten preseason poll and lost its top three scorers from last season, it was fair to think that it could take some time for Michigan State to figure things out and get on track. But for the 30th-year head coach, Hall of Famer and 2000 national champion, the process has been accompanied by winning because of the depth of his team.
“It’s hard to know every single year what your team is and what they’re going to be, but it’s really hard to know about other teams,” said Izzo, whose Spartans beat No. 17 Illinois 80-78 on Sunday to go to 7-0 in the Big Ten for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign. “So, you really don’t know what you’re going against after so many teams go through the offseason chaos. But our team has gone through this journey really well to this point, and our group has really found a way to enjoy one another.”
The Spartans have one of the more unique rosters in the nation, with 10 players averaging 14-plus minutes per game and only one who averages double-digits in points – senior Jaden Akins.
“We may not be as talented with a top 3-4 guys that just overwhelm you, but it’s been a talented group of 10 guys that have come together,” Izzo said. “We work really well together, we’ve worn some people down and most importantly, we’ve done the things we need to do to win. It’s been a really fun group to coach.”
All of that depth and production has led Michigan State to the No. 8 ranking in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, with the Spartans boasting top-20 marks in both KenPom offensive and defensive efficiency. This is a versatile team, with eight different players leading them in scoring in games this season, and getting 25-plus points from their bench in 17 of 18 games.
With their only losses coming to Kansas and Memphis on a neutral court, the Spartans’ metrics are strong, as they are currently projected as a 3-seed by FOX Sports bracket forecaster Mike DeCourcy.
Akins has embraced a leadership role, Jase Richardson has flashed upside as a freshman, Omaha transfer Frankie Fidler continues to make progress as a complimentary scorer, Tre Holloman and Jeremy Fears generate tempo, Coen Carr provides the burst, Jaxon Kohler has made a major leap as a rebounder and – well, you get the point.
This Michigan State team fits the famous Aristotle phrase: “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
And with Izzo sitting at 350 Big Ten victories, just three shy of tying Bob Knight’s all-time record of 353 in conference play, the stars have aligned for a fitting and emotional 30th season for one of the all-time greats in college basketball history.
Earlier this week, FOX Sports went one-on-one with the Hall of Fame coach:
Having covered you and your teams, I know that you are never satisfied. What else are you looking at with your team right now?
“We definitely have not shot the ball as well as I think we can. We’ve got some very good shooters, between guys like Jaden Akins and Jase Richardson, and even Tre Holloman. I think we’ve got some guys that can really put the ball in the basket. We haven’t shot as well from the 3-point line as I think we can and will, so that’s encouraging, but I’m also smart enough to know that in this league, you can go on a four or five-game losing streak as fast as you can say hello. So, I’m just trying to take it one game at a time, continue to stay grounded and try to stay focused on our defense and rebounding, and our free-throw shooting has been off the charts. The next step is improving that 3-point shooting.”
In the last eight games, five different players have led your team in scoring. That’s not something that you can say for a lot of teams in college basketball at this stage in the season. How much does that please you to see the way this group has come together rather than it being just 1-2 guys doing the heavy lifting?
“We’ve had eight different leading scorers in a game this season, which I’ve never had in my 30-year head coaching career. What makes me most proud about it is that they actually pull for one another in this day where I think our world has gotten to be more selfish, where it’s more all about me. But this team has been all about we and us. It’s been interesting. This time in my career has been very rewarding, and yet, we’ll see if we can keep it going now and that’s going to be the big key. You know, sooner or later, look at Illinois. They’re really good and may be the best team in our league, and we found a way to win. Last year, we found a way to lose five games down the stretch. Free-throw shooting has been a big factor to our success because we’re getting to the line more than ever, and we’re shooting over 81%, which is phenomenal.”
In the midst of the Illinois game on Sunday, which went down to the wire, or in the midst of any critical situation for that matter, which player is the leader in your huddles? Who is driving this team in the locker room to be their very best?
“Jeremy Fears has done a lot of that, but even that’s been a little bit more by-committee than you would think with different guys. It’s kind of fun when you have a team and you have some of those guys like Jase [Richardson], who has played against all the great players in the recruiting ranks, and he knows the scouting report. He gets fired up for a game. Then, you’ve got seniors who have been through so many wars over the years with these guys, so I’ve actually had different guys step up this year. That’s not always comforting because you ask yourself if you have one guy you can constantly go to or one key guy that can get you that big bucket, and sometimes that’s not true with this team. But, the other side of it is the fact that the guy on the other end coaching doesn’t know who I’m going to either. So, sometimes it works to your advantage.”
When we look back at Sunday, how about Tre Holloman? He had 17 points in the win and has scored 27 in the last two games. In what ways have you seen Tre take those next steps?
“Tre has definitely taken some steps for us, having played both the point and at the 2-guard for us. He’s a very good defender when he wants to be, and I think he’s finding that niche of going quick, but not hurrying. I think at times earlier in his career, he could get out of control and I think he’s doing a better job of playing under control. When you play the point some, you can’t get out of control at all. Sometimes, at the 2, he wasn’t shooting the ball well at all early on in the season from 3-point range, and now that’s starting to improve. Now, we need to maintain that. I think we’ve got some pretty good guards in Fears, Holloman, Richardson and Akins. Those four guys, you can move them around, and they all bring something different to the table and I think they’re all very effective. They’ve really worked well together and the egos have been put aside, and as a result, it’s been really fun to watch them grow together.”
I have to ask you about your four-star freshman Jase Richardson, the son of Jason. How would you characterize Jase? What comes to mind when you think about him, the player and the person?
“He’s been a dream of a kid coming into our program. He’s as good as it gets. He works on his game tirelessly and he cares about everybody in our program. Everybody. He’s incredibly intelligent and can speak more than a couple of languages. We went over to Spain and he could do anything that you wanted him to do. But as a player, I think the word would be incredibly ‘efficient.’ He knows how to pass the ball so well and he gives it up early – sometimes too early – and what we’ve got to do now is with his efficiency (56% FG, 41% from 3), we’ve got to get him more shots, and he has to take more shots because he’s a very good shooter. But he’s very good with the ball. He can distribute it. He has a wonderful sense of things and I think his second half of the season will be a lot better than his first half. Some of that is us getting a full feel for him and some of it is him getting a feel for college basketball. He’s been an exciting kid to have here because I think his ceiling is extremely high and I think he’s going to be a great player at Michigan State.”
I’ll turn the page now to the senior, Jaden Akins. I remember hearing you in the fall at Big Ten Media Day talking about the spotlight being on him with Tyson Walker, Malik Hall and A.J. Hoggard gone. When you think of Jaden’s development into this role, how would you describe his impact?
“I think there’s a couple of big things with him and one is that he gained 10 pounds over the summer. He needed to get stronger and bigger, and he did that. He’s become a better defensive player, he’s become better with the basketball. And he’s a career 37% 3-point shooter and that’s where he’s struggled a little bit more than normal this year (28% on season), but as that comes, and he’s starting to shoot it better over the last few weeks, I think he has a chance to be a great two-way player. Not all great shooters are also like that on the defensive end, and he can be that.”
You said this team is very unselfish. In a world where college basketball can be very transactional and NIL-driven, how do you and your staff get to a point where you’ve got that selfless nature created in your room?
“Well, we’ve tried to do things that build all of that. I took the team to Spain over the summer. We went back to Northern Michigan, my alma mater, for an exhibition game. We’ve gone to Tigers, Lions and Pistons games. I’ve tried to do more and that’s because the transfer portal has made us such transactional organizations, as you said. But I’m still a relationship-based coach and I think relationships are extremely important. And so we do try to do a lot of things together, and you also have to give the players credit for having a bond. We try to put them in a position, but they are the ones doing the work. And man, it’s been great watching them grow in that respect.
We’ve still got 13 games to go in this league and that part worries me. I think you’re seeing teams that are very good, like UCLA, that went through some struggles, but now they’re coming back a little bit. I think everybody is going to go through some ups and downs, and we’ve obviously been up, but what will happen when things go down a little bit? Are we strong enough to handle that? Everybody can be good when you’re winning, and I hope we keep winning, but the realistic part of the whole thing is that there will be some highs and lows to a season.
Last week, 19 of the top 25 got beat. Gonzaga lost at home. I mean, that’s un-American! A variety of teams have had some ups and downs, maybe more so than I’ve seen week to week in this sport in a long time. So we have to be ready for anything.”
You have 350 Big Ten Conference wins. You are three shy of Bob Knight’s all-time record in the league. How would you reflect on the thought of breaking that milestone?
“You know, I’ve never really thought about it, and I’m not just saying that with humility. When I was coming up in this profession, it was Bob Knight, John Thompson and Gene Keady that you idolized. To be in the same breath with a guy like that? Bob was great to me and I have so much respect and admiration for him and what he’s done.
I look at it in a variety of ways. For starters, we play more conference games now than they used to and, secondly, I’ve spent one more year at my school than he did (1971-2000). If I’m lucky enough to accomplish it, it’s a great accomplishment. But all of these records are different now because there’s nothing that’s exactly alike, but I guess I realize how lucky I am to have coached the number of guys that won games for me because, believe it or not, I didn’t win a game. I didn’t make a shot nor did I assist on one. And, they’ve done an unbelievable job for me, and now we’ve put ourselves in a position where, who knows, it could happen or it could not happen.
There are a lot of wins ahead, or so I hope, and there are probably a lot of losses ahead. So, I’m just going to take it game by game. I was a Bob Knight fan and to think that we here at Michigan State could accomplish something like that is mind-boggling to me and wilder than anything I thought it could be when I got into this profession. It supersedes all my dreams and goals.
You bring up the fact that 19 of the AP Top 25 teams lost last week and that’s the fun of this sport.
“Well, it’s fun for everybody watching. It’s stressful for us!” (laughter)
But, I have to imagine this is better for you than what the offseason can bring in this sport?
“Absolutely. That’s absolutely right.”
How do we get a point of sanity in the world of college basketball when it comes to offseason chaos, the portal and NIL?
“I’ll be honest with you, John. I was on a lot of boards and committees. Just this week, Jay Wright saw us practice, and I was talking with him about the different committees we were on as the sport’s changes all started. It scares me a little bit, but I’ve just kind of decided that, for me, I’m kind of off those committees now, and I didn’t like the way that it was handled. I’m not sure anybody at the top of our profession did a very good job. I’m all for players getting paid something, and I’m all for some sanity with transfers, but I’ve chosen not to talk much about it anymore because I don’t think people understand the unintended consequences with these things.
So, I’m just going to keep trying to do my job the best I can. The day that we are a transactional program at Michigan State, I won’t be here. Relationships are everything to me. I’ve been so fortunate, from Mateen Cleaves to Draymond Green to Cassius Winston to Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson, those relationships that still take place every summer when they call and I call them, I worry about what that’s going to be like for players who are at several different schools. That said, I’ve got to do my job and adjust, but not totally change, that’s for sure.”
Do you ever think about retirement?
“It’s really funny because I should be doing that. Everybody should be doing that because I think you have to have a plan. Unfortunately, with everything that’s happened the last five years with COVID and the major changes, I haven’t had time to think about retirement. I look at good friends of mine with Jay Wright and Tony Bennett, and there’s nobody better than Nick Saban, who kind of shocked me and shocked the world when he retired. But I know this: the two things I look at are staying too long. If I’m not doing my job and developing young men, then there’s no reason I should still be doing this. The other thing is the relationships piece. If that’s not important to this whole process, then I won’t continue to do it. But right now, I’m too stubborn. I feel good about where I’m at, and I feel this team has helped excite me. I really mean that. It’s been good.
I know I’m beating around the bush and I probably will think about it after I talk to you. I think you have to have a plan – and I’ve talked with Mark Few, Rick Barnes and even guys like Matt Painter about it – because jobs are hard, and they’ve gotten harder over the years. But, it will work out. It’s good for me to think about it because I want to make sure I do it the way that I want to do it. I want to make sure whenever it ends, it ends the right way for both me and the kids I’m coaching. But I love this team and what we are doing this year.”
If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would you take out to dinner?
“Well, the first has to be Muhammad Ali. We were invited to his place after we won the national championship game. He came out for that game and going to his place was one of the thrills of my life. He’s such an intriguing man. Another person who I enjoyed, who was so good to me, that I’d have loved to spend more time with is John Thompson. He was larger than life. And, the third guy I’d like to go to dinner with is my dad, Carl. I’d love to have him at that dinner.”

Alex Ovechkin Sets Record, Approaching Wayne Gretzky’s 894-Goal Mark
Alex Ovechkin celebrates his 21st goal of the year after the Washington Capitals beat the Ottawa … [+]
It’s official. No NHL scorer has tormented more goaltenders than Alex Ovechkin.
On Thursday night in Ottawa, Ovechkin beat Leevi Merilainen with a snap shot from the left face-off circle at 3:07 of overtime, giving the Washington Capitals a 1-0 win over the Ottawa Senators.
Per ESPN, the 22-year-old rookie Meralainen is the 179th goalie that Ovechkin has scored on in his NHL career. That’s a new record for the most different goalies that one player has scored on, one ahead of Jaromir Jagr.
The NHL has assembled a video compilation of all 179 goalies. If you’re going to watch it, do it on your lunch hour: it’s more than 47 minutes long.
Jagr, now 52, sits fourth on the all-time goal-scoring list with 766 goals in 1,733 career NHL games. He’ll be a Hockey Hall of Famer once he finally wraps up his playing career. He’s now in his eighth year playing for the Kladno Knights, the team he owns in his native Czechia. This year, he has four goals and nine points in 24 games.
At 39, Ovechkin is now at 874 NHL goals in 1,455 games. He needs 20 more to match Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894, and 21 to set a new standard.
Not even the most serious injury of Ovechkin’s career has derailed the quest that the NHL has dubbed ‘The Gr8 Chase.’ Though he missed 16 games over more than five weeks with a fractured left fibula, the Washington Capitals captain re-joined his team’s lineup ahead of schedule, right after the league’s Christmas holiday break.
He now has six goals in 11 games since his return, a scoring rate of 0.55 goals per game.
Thursday’s win came in the Capitals’ 45th game of the season, so they have 37 to go this year.
If Ovechkin maintains his post-injury pace through the rest of the year, he’d score another 20. That would tie Gretzky and make his first goal of the 2025-26 season the record-breaker.
But don’t rule out the prospect of him picking up the pace.
“I think we really have to be careful to judge, just coming back from the injury,” said Capitals coach Spencer Carbery earlier this week. “It’s harder than I think people may realize, just because the rest of the league and the rest of the players are in mid-season form right now. And to miss a month and then try to get back up and running at 39 is a lot easier said than done.
“So, I think if you look into the numbers and that stuff, that’s probably what you’re seeing is him getting back up to speed. It’s going to take some time. We know that. I know that. He probably wants that to be rushed as we do as well, but it’s going to take some time.”
Historically, Ovechkin also tends to heat up in the second half. And his 21 goals in 29 total games this season are a scoring rate of .724 goals per game — which dramatically eclipses his impressive career scoring rate of .600.
Barring further injuries, Ovechkin’s career-average rate would put him on pace to score No. 895 in the Capitals’ 80th game of the season, when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets for their last home game of the year on April 13.
If he can stay at .724 goals a game, he’d break the record in Washington’s 74th game of the year — in Boston on April 1.
As the record draws closer, there’s one other key stat to watch.
Gretzky’s 894 goals came in 1,487 games. If Ovechkin can hit 895 in his next 32 games or fewer, he would also beat The Great One’s career scoring pace.
Ovechkin already holds the records for most power-play goals (317), most shots (6,732) and most empty-net goals (61). But anyone who feels that the empty-net tallies sully his record chase can rest easy. He’s just five ahead of Gretzky, who sits second with 56. The differential is not even one percent of the final total.
Thursday’s tally was also the 134th game-winning goal of Ovechkin’s career. That moves him within one of the all-time record of 135, held by Jagr.
With the win on Thursday, the Capitals maintain first place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference with a record of 30-10-5, and lead the league with a .722 points percentage.
The Gr8 Chase continues Saturday, when the Capitals host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In a historic moment for the NHL, Alex Ovechkin has set a new record with his 735th career goal, putting him one step closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 goals. Ovechkin, who currently plays for the Washington Capitals, has been a dominant force on the ice for years and shows no signs of slowing down.Fans and analysts alike are in awe of Ovechkin’s incredible skill and determination, as he continues to light up the scoreboard game after game. With each goal he scores, he inches closer to Gretzky’s legendary record, a feat that many thought would never be surpassed.
As Ovechkin approaches this historic milestone, hockey fans around the world are eagerly watching and cheering him on. Will he be able to surpass Gretzky’s record and etch his name in the history books as one of the greatest goal scorers of all time? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – Ovechkin’s talent and passion for the game are truly unmatched.

The Green Bay Packers have a lot to play for in terms of the postseason to end 2024, but two former franchise greats are chasing NFL milestones over the final two games of the season.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and receiver Davante Adams — now with the New York Jets — can hit special marks to finish 2024.
The Jets, who are 4-11 and eliminated from postseason contention, end the season with a road game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday and a home game against the Miami Dolphins next Sunday.
Rodgers has 499 career touchdown passes and is one away from becoming the fifth quarterback in NFL history to 500 touchdown passes. Rodgers, a future Pro Football Hall of Famer, threw 475 of his career touchdown passes with the Packers.
QBs with 500 career TD passes
1. Tom Brady, 649
2. Drew Brees, 571
3. Peyton Manning, 539
4. Brett Favre, 508Per the NFL, Rodgers can join Manning as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to throw 500 touchdown passes in under 250 career games. Sunday against the Buffalo Bills will be Rodgers’ 247th career game. Manning needed 244.
Rodgers and Adams are also approaching history as a TD-creating duo. The two are entering Week 17 with 82 career touchdown connections, including the postseason, which is tied for the third most in NFL history. With one more, Rodgers and Adams will pass Dan Marino and Mark Clayton for third place all-time behind only Manning and Marvin Harrison (114) and Steve Young and Jerry Rice (92).
QB-WR touchdowns, including postseason
1. Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison: 114
2. Steve Young and Jerry Rice: 92
3. Dan Marino and Mark Clayton: 82
3. Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams: 82
5. Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown: 78Rodgers and Adams produced 76 of their 82 touchdown connections while with the Packers between 2014 and 2021.
Adams, a second-round pick of the Packers in 2014, recently caught his 100th career touchdown pass, becoming the 12th player in NFL history with 100 or more touchdown catches. He currently ranks 10th all-time with 102 touchdown catches, trailing only Mike Evans (103) among active players.
Now 41, Rodgers has thrown 24 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions over 15 starts this season. Adams has 56 catches for 719 yards and six touchdowns in nine games since being traded from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Jets.
Both Rodgers and Adams face uncertain futures together in New York post-2024. Rodgers is still determining whether he wants to keep playing in 2025, while both Rodgers and Adams have unsavory and likely untenable cap hits for a team likely to hire a new general manager and head coach after a disastrous 2024 season.
As the 2024 NFL season comes to a close, former Green Bay Packers teammates Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams are both approaching significant milestones in their respective careers.Rodgers, now playing for the Denver Broncos, is on the verge of reaching 500 career touchdown passes. With his exceptional skill and leadership on the field, Rodgers has proven time and time again why he is considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Reaching this milestone would further solidify his legacy as one of the most prolific passers in NFL history.
Meanwhile, Adams, who now suits up for the Las Vegas Raiders, is closing in on 10,000 career receiving yards. Known for his exceptional route running and sure hands, Adams has been a consistent playmaker throughout his career. Achieving this milestone would be a testament to his hard work and dedication to the game.
As these former teammates continue to excel in their new environments, fans can only marvel at the impressive accomplishments they have achieved thus far. Rodgers and Adams are undoubtedly two of the most talented players in the league, and it will be exciting to see them reach these milestones by the end of the 2024 season.

Tornado Watch in Effect For Much of Central And Northern Alabama until 4am CT: Damaging Line of Severe Storms Approaching : The Alabama Weather Blog
The SPC has issued a tornado watch (yellow shaded area) for much of the area until 4am CT Sunday morning. A line of severe storms is expected to move through over the coming hours and into the overnight time period, with widespread damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Some of the wind gusts could reach 75mph, and an isolated strong tornado of EF2+ intensity is possible. This line of storms is currently over eastern MS, and is blanketed with tornado warnings (red polygons). This line should reach the state line around 9pm or so, the Birmingham metro and I-65 around midnight, and clears into GA around daybreak tomorrow morning.
There may be a enhanced corridor of more widespread damaging winds across portions of Choctaw, Marengo, Hale, Sumter, Pickens, Greene, and Tuscaloosa counties, where a bow echo could develop. We will monitor this closely, and we encourage you to treat severe thunderstorm warnings tonight like a tornado warning and move to your designated shelter. These storms, regardless of if they are producing tornadoes, will have potential to produce widespread, and in some cases significant straight line wind damage, similar to that of a small tornado. We also expect numerous power outages.

In the world of artificial intelligence, ethical considerations are paramount. As AI technologies continue to advance and integrate into various aspects of our daily lives, it is crucial for practitioners to constantly reassess and prioritize ethical principles in their work. One key ethical dilemma that often arises in discussions about AI is the infamous “trolley problem.” This scenario, originally posed by philosopher Philippa Foot, presents a moral dilemma where a runaway trolley is headed towards five people tied to the tracks. The only way to save them is to pull a lever that will divert the trolley onto a different track, where it will only hit one person instead. The question is whether it is ethically justifiable to sacrifice one life to save five.
As AI practitioners, we must approach this ethical dilemma and others like it with a critical and empathetic mindset. It is not enough to focus solely on the technical aspects of AI development; we must also consider the potential societal impacts and ethical implications of our work.
Key metrics for ethical AI practitioners to consider when approaching the trolley problem and similar scenarios include:
1. Transparency: AI systems must be transparent and explainable to users and stakeholders. It is important to understand how decisions are being made and be able to justify them.
2. Accountability: There must be accountability mechanisms in place to ensure that AI systems are held responsible for their actions. Practitioners must be prepared to take responsibility for the outcomes of their work.
3. Bias and fairness: AI systems must be designed and implemented in a way that minimizes bias and promotes fairness. Practitioners must be aware of potential biases in their data and algorithms and take steps to mitigate them.
4. Privacy and data protection: AI systems must respect user privacy and data protection laws. Practitioners must ensure that data is handled securely and ethically.
By prioritizing these key metrics and approaching ethical dilemmas with a thoughtful and ethical mindset, AI practitioners can help ensure that AI technologies are developed and deployed in a way that benefits society as a whole. Let us continue to strive towards creating ethical AI systems that prioritize the well-being of all individuals.
