  • Elizabeth Nissen Obituary (01/04/1954 – 01/07/2025) – Ann Arbor, MI

Elizabeth A. Nissen (aka Beth/Nis/Becky) died at home on January 7, 2025, three days after her 71st birthday.

She was a veteran news, war, sports science, and arts correspondent who worked in network television with ABC News (“World News Tonight” and “Nightline”), cable news (CNN “NewsNight”), public television (WGBH “Nova Science Now”), online (CNN.com, NBCLearn.com), and in print media (The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek). She was also a co-founder and Senior Producer of NBC Learn, the educational division of NBC News.

She is survived by five of her six siblings: Mary Nissen Whaley and her husband Jay, Anna Nissen Barrett and her husband Tim, James Nissen, Eva Nissen Lewin, and Steve Nissen. While she had no children of her own, she was a beloved aunt to nine nieces and nephews, all of whom admired and cherished her.

She is predeceased by her brother Jon (1995); her mother, Patricia A. Bonnet (1997); and her father, Eugene W. Nissen (2021).

A lifelong reader, learner, and teacher, Beth was passionate about communicating information in a relatable way. She prepared her students to be critical thinkers, and helped teachers improve methods and techniques for more effective instruction.

She was a caregiver, a true oldest—most responsible—sibling. She was also an active member of her local Rotary Club, and The Adelphies group at 1st Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor at the time of her passing.

She is remembered for her wit, her knowledge, her compassion, and her nurturing of friendships through extensive personal correspondence. She was an avid Wolverine—and Lions—fan.

As Beth requested, no memorial service is planned at this time. Beth did ask that, if they desired, her friends or associates gather in the individual groups in which they associated with her to remember her and share their stories of her.

Published by Ann Arbor News from Jan. 11 to Jan. 16, 2025.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Nissen, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Elizabeth passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2025 in Ann Arbor, Michigan at the age of 71.

Born on January 4th, 1954, Elizabeth was a dedicated and loving individual who touched the lives of all who knew her. She was known for her kind heart, warm smile, and unwavering strength.

Elizabeth is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Thomas, her three children, Sarah, Michael, and Emily, and her five grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

A memorial service will be held in honor of Elizabeth at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ann Arbor on January 14th, 2025 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Elizabeth’s memory.

Rest in peace, Elizabeth. You will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

The Ann Arbor Railroad was not just a typical railway system – it also had a unique connection to car ferries that crossed the Great Lakes. One of the most famous car ferries associated with the Ann Arbor Railroad was the SS Viking.

The Viking was a massive car ferry that operated between Frankfort, Michigan and Menominee, Michigan, carrying cars and passengers across Lake Michigan. At the time, it was one of the largest car ferries in the world and a crucial link in the transportation network of the Ann Arbor Railroad.

However, as the years went by, the need for car ferries diminished with the rise of more efficient and cost-effective transportation methods. The Viking made its last sailing on September 30, 1968, marking the end of an era for both the Ann Arbor Railroad and the car ferry industry.

The final voyage of the Viking was a bittersweet moment for those who had worked on the ferry and for the communities that relied on it for transportation. It was a reminder of the changing times and the evolution of transportation in the Great Lakes region.

The legacy of the Viking lives on in the memories of those who sailed on it and in the history of the Ann Arbor Railroad. It serves as a reminder of the important role that railroads and car ferries played in connecting communities and facilitating commerce in the Great Lakes region.

The Ann Arbor Railroad, once a vital transportation link between Michigan and the Midwest, has left behind a legacy of fascinating stories and memories. In this series of posts, we will explore some vignettes of the Ann Arbor Railroad’s history, starting with its role in transporting both freight and passengers across the Great Lakes.

One of the most unique aspects of the Ann Arbor Railroad was its use of car ferries to transport goods and people across Lake Michigan. In the early 20th century, before the construction of the Mackinac Bridge, the car ferries provided a crucial connection between Michigan’s Lower and Upper Peninsulas.

Passengers would board the ferries in Frankfort or Kewaunee, Wisconsin, and enjoy a leisurely journey across the lake, taking in the stunning views of the water and surrounding landscape. The car ferries also carried freight, including cars, trucks, and even entire train cars, making them an essential part of the Ann Arbor Railroad’s operations.

The car ferries were not without their challenges, however. Lake Michigan’s unpredictable weather could make for rough crossings, and the ferries had to navigate through ice floes in the winter months. Despite these obstacles, the car ferries remained a reliable and efficient mode of transportation for many years.

Sadly, the era of the car ferries came to an end in the 1980s, as improvements in highways and bridges made them obsolete. Today, the car ferries are a distant memory, but their legacy lives on in the stories of those who traveled on them and the communities they served.

Stay tuned for more vignettes of the Ann Arbor Railroad, as we continue to explore its rich history and impact on Michigan and the Midwest.
