  • Arman Tsarukyan not getting title shot after UFC 311 withdrawal

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Arman Tsarukyan won’t be fighting for the UFC lightweight title anytime soon.

Tsarukyan has lost his opportunity to rematch champion Islam Makhachev following his late-notice withdrawal from the main event of UFC 311 at Intuit Dome. The news was revealed by UFC CEO Dana White on Saturday night at the post-fight press conference.

“He’s going back to the drawing board,” White told reporters. “I don’t want anybody to fight hurt, ever. We’ve been in these positions before. We’re down there with the doctor, with Heather from (the UFC Performance Institute). You can ask any fighter – she’s the best in the world. You miss opportunities sometimes, and he did. We’ll see how this plays out for him next year.”

Tsarukyan was scheduled to challenge Makhachev at UFC 311. However, on Friday morning, the Armenian notified the UFC that he wasn’t fit to compete due to a back injury. In response to his withdrawal, the promotion got Renato Moicano, who was scheduled to fight Beneil Dariush on the same card, to step up and replace Tsarukyan with a little over 24 hours notice.

Makhachev ended submitting Moicano in the first round of their fight, thus defending his title a fourth time.

Tsarukyan, who fought and lost to Makhachev in a competitive decision back in 2019, is currently on a four-fight wining streak and 9-1 in his since the fight with Makhachev.

Despite still being the No. 1 contender in the UFC official lightweight rankings, White doubled down and assured the promotion wasn’t going to revisit a championship fight with Tsarukyan next when asked a second time by reporters.

“He’s not getting the title shot, that means he’s going to have to fight his way back to the title.”

Arman Tsarukyan not getting title shot after UFC 311 withdrawal

Arman Tsarukyan was forced to withdraw from his highly anticipated bout at UFC 311 due to an injury, leaving many fans and analysts wondering what’s next for the rising lightweight contender.

With an impressive record of 17-2 and wins over top-ranked opponents, Tsarukyan was seen as a potential title challenger in the stacked UFC lightweight division. However, his withdrawal from UFC 311 has put a halt to his momentum and raised questions about when he will get another shot at the title.

Despite his undeniable talent and potential, it seems unlikely that Tsarukyan will be granted a title shot in the near future. With the division already crowded with top contenders like Justin Gaethje, Michael Chandler, and Islam Makhachev, Tsarukyan will likely need to secure a few more wins before he can earn a title shot.

While it’s disappointing that Tsarukyan won’t be competing at UFC 311, fans can still look forward to seeing him back in action in the future. With his impressive skillset and determination, it’s only a matter of time before Tsarukyan gets another shot at the title.

  • Coach details severity of Arman Tsarukyan’s grueling back injury: ‘He couldn’t even sit up’ | UFC 311

It was going to take something serious to knock Arman Tsarukyan out of his lightweight title fight opposite current champion Islam Makhachev later tonight (Sat., Jan. 18, 2025) at UFC 311 live on ESPN+ pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, Calif., but that’s exactly what happened during his last sparring session.

Tsarukyan, who is coming off back-to-back wins over Beneil Dariush and Charles Oliveira to push his current UFC win streak to four, undoubtedly earned his rematch with Makhachev. The 28-year-old contender looked primed to give the champion a real run for his money, but an unfortunate back injury during the final week of training knocked Tsarukyan out of UFC 311’s main event.

UFC CEO Dana White announced Tsarukyan’s official withdrawal on Friday and pegged Renato Moicano as his replacement.

At first, fight fans didn’t know the severity of Tsarukyan’s injury. Tsarukyan said he had to make the “hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my fighting career,” but exactly how bad was he hurt? On Friday, MMA Junkie caught up with Tsarukyan’s coach, “Parrumpa,” to get the finer details of his fighter’s injury.

“The last sparring session he tweaked his back a little bit,” he said. “It wasn’t too bad. We thought it’s just the end of the camp. The body’s feeling it. And then he took a few days off. He was fine. And then we start fight week and everything was going great. The spasm, the pain was there, but he was powering through it. He never thought about not fighting. Never. He did so much for this camp.

“On Wednesday night after the last training he was complaining a little more. This guy doesn’t complain. He’s not a guy that keeps complaining about every single pain in his body. So when he did complain on Wednesday night we had to listen to him. His weight was going down a little bit. He was really good on weight. So that’s one of the reasons why this back pain arouse because the weight was going down.

“Thursday we went to the press conference and after the press conference he had to go see a doctor. He still wanted to fight. Still wanted to power through it. We started the weight cut and then a few sessions in on the weight cut he couldn’t do it anymore. He couldn’t even stand. He couldn’t even sit up. He had to stay laying on a bed.”

If Tsarukyan is able to heal up fast should he get another UFC title shot upon his return or is it back of the line for the Armenian contender?

  • Charles Oliveira will attend UFC 311 to watch Islam Makhachev vs. Arman Tsarukyan 2: ‘I’m the next’

Charles Oliveira Ready for Winner of UFC 311 Main Event

During an interview with TNT Sports, Charles Oliveira discussed the rematch between Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan. For “do Bronx,” the winner is irrelevant.

    https://twitter.com/ufcontnt/status/1879943738711322624

“They have similar styles, I think Islam is a little bit ahead,” Oliveira said. “I also think it’s gonna be a very good fight, but for me, it doesn’t matter who wins. I’m the next.”

Oliveira insists that he’s ready to fight as soon as possible, but he realizes that the winner of the UFC 311 headliner may not walk out unscathed.

“It depends on how they will leave the fight,” Oliveira said. “For me, it doesn’t matter. I will fight in February, March if I could, but it will depend on how the fight goes.”

Oliveira went on to confirm whether or not he’ll be in attendance at the Intuit Dome this weekend to watch the fight.

“I will be there even if I have to sit close to the cage,” Oliveira said.

Oliveira was defeated by Makhachev back in October 2022. He was submitted in the second round, and this was the start of Makhachev’s current UFC lightweight title run. Oliveira also suffered a loss against Tsarukyan back in April 2024 via split decision.

Can “do Bronx” eventually get revenge on both fighters?

Charles Oliveira, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, has announced that he will be attending UFC 311 to watch the highly anticipated rematch between Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan. Oliveira, who recently defended his title against Dustin Poirier, is eager to see who will emerge victorious in this pivotal matchup.

“I’m excited to watch Makhachev and Tsarukyan go to war once again,” Oliveira said. “Both fighters are incredibly talented and have been making waves in the lightweight division. I know that the winner of this fight will be a top contender for my title, and I’m ready to face whoever comes out on top.”

Oliveira, who is currently on a nine-fight win streak, believes that he is the next in line to face the winner of Makhachev vs. Tsarukyan 2. With a record-breaking submission game and knockout power to match, Oliveira is confident that he can take on any challenger in the division.

“I’ve proven time and time again that I am the best lightweight in the world,” Oliveira said. “I’m excited to see who will step up to challenge me next. Whether it’s Makhachev, Tsarukyan, or anyone else, I will be ready to defend my title and show why I am the undisputed champion.”

UFC 311 is set to take place on November 12th, and fans can expect an action-packed night of fights. With Charles Oliveira in attendance, the stakes are higher than ever for the lightweight division. Stay tuned for updates on the event and the future of the UFC lightweight title picture.

  • What Arman Tsarukyan sees as main Islam Makhachev weakness

Arman Tsarukyan thinks he can drag Islam Makhachev into deep waters at UFC 311.

Tsarukyan (22-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) challenges lightweight champion Makhachev (26-1 MMA, 15-1 UFC) in Saturday’s main event (pay-per-view, ESPNews/Disney+, ESPN+) at Intuit Dome.

Tsarukyan will look to avenge his UFC debut loss to Makhachev in April 2019. Although he gave Makhachev a good fight, Tsarukyan is excited to show off his improvements in their title-fight rematch.

“Of course, I’ve changed so much,” Tsarukyan said on the “Pound 4 Pound” podcast. “I have improved all my skills, but the best thing I feel is experience from the fights. When you fight, you go there, you do some mistakes during the fight, and then go to the gym and work on your new skills.

“After each fight, I feel like I’m getting better, better, better. The best thing from the fight, I got experience. Especially UFC experience. When you fight the first time, you’re super excited, you’re nervous, but now I’m already used to it for the crowd, for the people, for the media. Just now it’s like a job. Just go there and have fun and fight.”

Tsarukyan praised Makhachev for his all-around skills, but sees a weak spot in his armor that he can expose.

“Islam is so smart,” Tsarukyan said. “He’s so well rounded. He can strike, he can clinch, he can wrestle, but he has weaknesses, as well. His conditioning not the best. So when he fights with a wrestle guy, when it’s going to be difficult to take down someone, he’s going to waste energy. His boxing is better than his kicks. I feel my kicks are way better than his. He is so smart, as well. He knows how to move, how to relax.

“Where you’ve got to drop your gloves, he has a lot of tricky things. On the clinch, he has good movement. He’s ready when you move and then takes you down when you knee him and he flips you. He’s so smart, well rounded fighter, and I’m just going to do my best there, and I know how I can beat (him), and I’ll go there, just feel my hands, power. I just can’t wait to show everybody what’s the new version of Arman Tsarukyan.”

Arman Tsarukyan is a rising star in the UFC lightweight division and is known for his aggressive fighting style and well-rounded skills. In a recent interview, Tsarukyan shared his thoughts on what he sees as Islam Makhachev’s main weakness.

According to Tsarukyan, Makhachev’s main weakness is his lack of experience against top-level competition. While Makhachev has an impressive record and has shown flashes of brilliance in the octagon, Tsarukyan believes that he has yet to face a truly elite opponent who can test his skills and push him to his limits.

Tsarukyan also pointed out that Makhachev’s striking game is not as polished as his grappling, which could be a vulnerability that opponents can exploit. Tsarukyan, who is known for his striking abilities, believes that he could have an advantage in that aspect if he were to face Makhachev in the future.

Overall, Tsarukyan sees Makhachev’s lack of experience against top-tier competition and his relatively weaker striking game as potential weaknesses that opponents can capitalize on. It will be interesting to see if these weaknesses are exposed in Makhachev’s upcoming fights and how he will address them moving forward.
