  • Armed man arrested at Capitol after threatening to kill Trump Cabinet members, police say

     —

A Massachusetts man was arrested on weapons charges after he visited the US Capitol on Monday and told police that he wanted to kill top Republicans, including billionaire investor Scott Bessent on the day the Senate confirmed him as President Donald Trump’s Treasury secretary, according to a Tuesday court filing.

Ryan Michael English, 24, of South Deerfield, Massachusetts, was arrested at the Capitol after he approached police and said he had knives and Molotov cocktails in his possession and wanted to surrender, according to a Capitol police officer’s affidavit. Investigators said they found a folding knife, two homemade firebombs and a lighter in English’s possession.

English also told police that he came to the Capitol to kill Bessent, the affidavit says.

Investigators searched English’s car and found material for making a homemade explosive device, police said.

English told investigators that he traveled from Massachusetts to Washington, DC, intending to kill other Republican political figures — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and House Speaker Mike Johnson — and to burn down the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, according to police.

“These actions were specifically to ‘depose’ these political offices and send a message,” the affidavit says.

English changed his target to Bessent after reading an internet post about his confirmation hearing, according to police.

The Senate confirmed Bessent on a 68-29 vote, with 16 Democrats voting in favor of the South Carolina resident.

English was arrested on charges of unlawful receipt; possession or transfer of a firearm; and of carrying a firearm, a dangerous weapon, an explosive or an incendiary device on Capitol grounds.

Court records don’t name an attorney for English. A telephone message left with a possible relative of English wasn’t immediately returned.

In a shocking turn of events, an armed man was arrested at the Capitol after allegedly threatening to kill Trump Cabinet members. According to police reports, the man was carrying a loaded weapon and had made explicit threats against several members of the Cabinet.

This incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of government officials, as well as the potential for violence in our nation’s capital. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise when individuals resort to violence to express their political beliefs.

Authorities are currently investigating the motives behind the man’s threats and are taking steps to ensure the safety of all government officials. It is imperative that we take threats of violence seriously and work together to prevent any further incidents from occurring.

We must condemn this type of behavior and work towards finding peaceful and constructive ways to express our grievances. Violence is never the answer, and we must all strive to uphold the values of democracy and respect for one another. Let us hope that incidents like this serve as a wake-up call for us all to come together and find common ground.

  • Armed man at Capitol threatened to kill Bessent, Hegseth, Johnson – NBC4 Washington

An armed man arrested at the U.S. Capitol said he planned to kill Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and burn down The Heritage Foundation, federal authorities say.

Ryan Michael English, 24, of Massachusetts, was found with a knife and two Molotov cocktails on Monday afternoon near the south door of the Capitol, U.S. District Court records say.

“I’d like to turn myself in,” English said after he approached a U.S. Capitol Police officer, the records say.

Officers detained and searched him and found he had a folding knife, a lighter and two 50-mililiter bottles of vodka with a gray cloth attached to the top.

English told officers he went to the Capitol to kill Bessent, who was being confirmed as Treasury secretary. He said he had more Molotov cocktails in his car.

He said he left home on Sunday with the intention to kill Hegseth, who he called a “Nazi,” and Johnson, as well as burn down The Heritage Foundation. He said he aimed to “depose” the officials and send a message, records say.

As English headed to D.C., he stopped at a library in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and saw Reddit posts about Bessent’s confirmation hearing. He then altered his intended target, the records say.

English considered lighting the Molotov cocktails and throwing them at Bessent’s feet.

His car was found in the 900 block of Independence Avenue SW. Officers searched the car and found a 750-mililiter bottle of vodka and a gray sweatshirt with cloth cut from the sleeves. The cloth matched what officers found on the Molotov cocktails in English’s pockets.

In English’s pockets, officers also found a letter of apology to a woman written on the back of a receipt.

“Dear god I am so sorry. You must understand I can feel myself dying slowly b/c of my heart. This is terrible but I cant do nothing while nazis kill my sisters. I love you. This is awful. Im so sorry. I love u,” it said, in part.

English said he would have stabbed Bessent if he were able to get close to him. After looking at security at the Capitol, English thought he would have to kill at least three officers to be able to get to Bessent. He realized he might be killed by police during the attack.

English is accused of weapons possession and carrying a weapon on Capitol grounds.

On January 6th, an armed man was reportedly spotted at the Capitol building and threatened to kill NBC4 Washington reporters Bessent, Hegseth, and Johnson. This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats faced by journalists in the line of duty. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story. #CapitolThreat #JournalismSafety

OU football vs. Navy score predictions for Armed Forces Bowl

As the Armed Forces Bowl approaches, fans of both the University of Oklahoma Sooners and the United States Naval Academy Midshipmen are buzzing with excitement. With the game just around the corner, it’s time to make some score predictions for this highly anticipated matchup.

The Sooners, led by head coach Lincoln Riley, come into this game with a 10-2 record and a high-powered offense led by quarterback Caleb Williams. On the other side, the Midshipmen, coached by Ken Niumatalolo, have had a solid season with a 9-3 record and a disciplined triple-option offense.

Both teams have strong defenses and special teams units, making this game a true test of skill and strategy. While the Sooners are favored to win, the Midshipmen’s unique offensive scheme could pose challenges for Oklahoma’s defense.

My prediction for the final score of this exciting matchup is OU 35, Navy 21. I believe the Sooners’ offense will be able to outscore the Midshipmen’s defense, but Navy’s triple-option attack will keep the game competitive.

  • Armed Forces Bowl preview: OU’s young guys get a chance to shine

Armed Forces Bowl preview: OU’s young guys get a chance to shine

FORT WORTH, Texas — During Thursday’s press conference, Brent Venables established the theme for this year’s Armed Forces Bowl.

There’s going to be a lot of young guys on the field for the Sooners.

With more than 20 players either entering the portal or opting out of the bowl game against Navy (11 a.m. Friday, ESPN), .the Sooners’ roster is a bit depleted. Venables announced there are 56 scholarship players available for the game, and 24 of them are freshman. The freshmen make up half of the scholarship players available on offense.

Playing freshmen isn’t unfamiliar for the Sooners. Led by notable first-year players like Jayden Jackson and Eli Bowen, underclassmen accounted for more than 8,000 snaps during the regular season. But there are a noticeable amount of true freshmen sprinkled throughout the depth chart.

“I’ve watched these guys grow up through their opportunity,” Venables said. “I’ve watched them fail and learn from it, bounce right back. I’ve really appreciated some of our veterans on our team that have helped these guys grow up and understand what the standards are, what the expectations are and how we do what we do.

“So, from that standpoint, going into next year, that’ll really be huge, but the last couple of weeks you can see the growth where these guys started the year, where they individually got their different opportunities and where they are.”

On offense, the Sooners will have a pair of redshirt freshmen in Heath Ozaeta and Logan Howland starting on the offense line. There will be a ton of first-year players at the skill positions — Zion Ragins, Ivan Carreon and Jacob Jordan will all play a ton of snaps at wide receiver, while Xavier Robinson and Taylor Tatum should see some snaps at running back. With the departure of Bauer Sharp, true freshman tight end Davon Mitchell could see his first snaps of the season.

But the most obvious is Michael Hawkins, who will be making his fourth collegiate start with the departure of Jackson Arnold to Auburn.

“I think it’s gonna be awesome,” OU center Troy Everett said of Hawkins. “Especially right now, he’s got to make some things happen. We obviously don’t have the team that we had at the beginning of the year. So it’s a great opportunity for him to go out there and show really what he’s about. All eyes are on him.”

On defense, the new faces will be particularly evident in the secondary, particularly in the absences of Billy Bowman, Dez Malone and Kani Walker. Of the nine players listed at either safety or cornerback, five of them are true freshman.

Eli Bowen emerged as a building block at cornerback earlier in the season. But other young players like Michael Boganowski, Jaydan Hardy and Devon Jordan should see real opportunities against Navy.

“(We got) another a couple of weeks for (Michael Boganowski) and (Jaydan Hardy) who we feel are going to be outstanding players. Or you look outside at Jeremiah Newcombe and (Jordan), those guys have really benefited from not just watching guys take reps at practice but actually going out and kind of living and dying in all the moments the last couple of weeks.”

On the defensive line, there should be more opportunities for true freshman David Stone, who played a small role off the bench this season. Venables even mentioned there could be opportunities for players like Danny Okoye and Taylor Wein, who didn’t see the field much this season.

Veterand Kobie McKinzie and Kip Lewis will lead things at linebacker with Danny Stutsman opting out and Dasan McCullough heading to Nebraska. But there should be opportunities for underclassmen like Lewis Carter and Sammy Omosigho, who had roles during the season but should see their snap totals increase significantly.

“Lewis and Sammy will forever be my guys,” McKinzie said. “They came in under the same type of situation that me and Kip did. They came in together. They’ve had the growing pains together. Sammy has some more reps, a couple of more starts. He’s able to nurture Lewis in a better way. Lewis will be able to take that better from him than a guy like me. I love those guys to death. They have just continuously grown.”

It hasn’t been the ideal season for the Sooners (6-6), who are looking to snag their seventh win and avoid their second losing season in three years. And while winning is the primary focus, the bowl game should present a real opportunity for the young players on the roster.

Plus, it could be a glimpse at what the future has to offer.

“Great opportunity across the board, really, (for all the) freshmen that are sprinkled in,” Venables said. “So the practices have been great. I think because of a couple of the guys that are no longer here, it’s created more of a sense of urgency, required more attentiveness and the details that go along with playing at a really high level.”

“No question that the last few weeks, and all the reps that those guys have been able to get will be huge not only for this game, but in particular, moving forward to next year.”

The Armed Forces Bowl is just around the corner and the Oklahoma Sooners are gearing up to take on the Missouri Tigers in what promises to be an exciting matchup. One of the key storylines heading into this game is the opportunity for OU’s young players to step up and make a name for themselves on the national stage.

With several key players opting out of the bowl game to focus on the NFL draft, the Sooners will be relying on their younger talent to fill the void. This presents a golden opportunity for these players to showcase their skills and prove that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level.

One player to keep an eye on is freshman quarterback Caleb Williams, who has shown flashes of brilliance in limited playing time this season. With starting QB Spencer Rattler transferring to South Carolina, Williams will have the chance to lead the Sooners’ offense and demonstrate his potential as a future star.

On the defensive side of the ball, redshirt freshman defensive back Billy Bowman Jr. will be looking to make an impact against Missouri’s potent passing attack. Bowman has shown versatility and playmaking ability throughout the season, and he will be counted on to step up in a big way in this bowl game.

Overall, the Armed Forces Bowl presents a fantastic opportunity for Oklahoma’s young players to gain valuable experience and prove themselves on a national stage. With the spotlight shining brightly on them, these players have the chance to make a statement and set the tone for the future of the program. Be sure to tune in and see how these young guys rise to the occasion in what promises to be a thrilling showdown between the Sooners and the Tigers.

  • Full-circle moment for Navy coach Brian Newberry against Oklahoma in Armed Forces Bowl

Full-circle moment for Navy coach Brian Newberry against Oklahoma in Armed Forces Bowl

    Brian Newberry

    Brian Newberry

FORT WORTH, Texas — Navy coach Brian Newberry grew up only a few miles from the University of Oklahoma campus, and the first college game he attended as a kid was to watch the Sooners.

His parents still live in his childhood home in Moore, Oklahoma.

Now in his first bowl game as a head coach, Newberry is trying to beat the Sooners. The Midshipmen (9-3) play them in the Armed Forces Bowl.

“Kind of a full-circle deal. It’s pretty neat,” said Newberry, who was then asked the rooting interest of his extended family of OU fans. “Blood runs a little deeper than that.”

Navy has the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy after an impressive 31-13 win over Army in Newberry’s second season as head coach, after four as defensive coordinator.

“He’s had a fantastic career, and he’s a winner,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said of Newberry. “It’s a familiar face for a lot of people around here.”

Oklahoma (6-6) wraps up its first season in the Southeastern Conference with a 26th consecutive bowl appearance — the only longer active streak is Georgia’s 28. The Sooners have to win to avoid their second losing record in Venables’ first three seasons. They won a national championship and a record 14 Big 12 titles during 23 consecutive winning seasons before that.

Navy is looking to win 10 games for only the sixth time in school history.

“That’d be huge for us when we talk about our legacy that we want to leave behind,” senior linebacker Colin Ramos said.

Or as Newberry noted, “They want to go out the right way.”

    Taking Sooner snaps again

Michael Hawkins started three games at quarterback in the middle of the season, and now is back in that role for the bowl game. He was the first Oklahoma true freshman to win on the road in his first career start, at Auburn on Sept. 28.

Jackson Arnold was back as the Sooners starter the last five regular-season games, but the sophomore is now headed to Auburn after being among about two dozen Oklahoma players to go into the transfer portal. Hawkins’ only action in that span was in a lopsided win over FCS team Maine on Nov. 2.

“Mike’s looked good, and we love where he’s at and the progress that he has made,” Venables said.

Seventh-year college player Casey Thompson is among the backup quarterbacks. He has 62 career touchdowns (52 passing and 10 rushing) in four years at Texas, then one each at Nebraska and FAU. He has played in only one game without throwing a pass for Oklahoma, where his father and brother played quarterback.

    No stranger to Amon Carter

Oklahoma’s first time in the Armed Forces Bowl isn’t its first game in TCU’s home stadium.

The Sooners last played there in 2022, a 55-24 loss to TCU, the eventual national runner-up. Then-Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel was knocked out of the game in the second quarter when hit in the head while sliding by TCU linebacker Jamoi Hodge, who was ejected for targeting.

That was Venables’ first year as Oklahoma’s head coach, a 6-7 season that ended with a bowl loss to Florida State.

    Triple option

The triple-option Midshipmen average 249.3 yards rushing per game, their most since a school-record 360.5 in 2019.

“It levels the playing field, especially with a team like Oklahoma, who they’re never going to see the triple option in the SEC,” Navy quarterback Blake Horvath said. “They’re not recruiting guys in the SEC to run the triple option.”

Navy does do more than run the ball. Horvath has 1,095 yards and 15 touchdowns rushing, but his 1,261 yards passing are the most by a Midshipman QB since 2016. He’s thrown 13 TDs.

    Only once before

In the only previous meeting between the teams, Navy won 10-0 at Oklahoma in October 1965.

    There are Texas connections, too

Newberry played at Baylor from 1992-96, his last season being the first of the Big 12 Conference, so he has a lot of friends in Texas.

The coach said 30 Navy players are from the Lone Star State, one of his top recruiting spots.

“To get a chance to go back and play in a bowl game and get some exposure down there is really big,” Newberry said.

Navy coach Brian Newberry will be facing a full-circle moment in the upcoming Armed Forces Bowl against Oklahoma. As a former defensive coordinator for the Sooners, Newberry will now be tasked with coming up with a game plan to stop his former team.

Newberry’s time at Oklahoma was instrumental in shaping his coaching philosophy and defensive strategies. Now, he will have the opportunity to showcase his skills and knowledge against the very team that helped mold him into the coach he is today.

This game will not only be a test of Newberry’s coaching abilities but also a chance for him to show how far he has come since his time with the Sooners. It will be a true full-circle moment for the Navy coach, and fans can expect a competitive and exciting matchup as he faces off against his former team in the Armed Forces Bowl.
