  • Former Chiefs tight end could make unexpected impact as Texans visit Arrowhead

Before the season, the idea of Irv Smith playing at a game in Arrowhead Stadium in the postseason would have felt like a somewhat surprising and nice story for the Kansas City Chiefs. After all, the Chiefs signed Smith to a one-year deal last March in the hopes that he would bolster the team’s tight end depth and help them make a run at another Super Bowl.

Well, s it turns out, Smith is playing on Saturday in the Divisional Round at Arrowhead, but the situation is hardly what anyone could have anticipated.

The Houston Texans have elevated Smith from the practice squad in anticipation of playing the Chiefs on Saturday in the first of four games slated for the weekend.

Irv Smith is going to have his moment at Arrowhead after all.

If you didn’t realize Smith was with the Texans, you’re not alone. The veteran tight end was a quiet addition to the team’s practice squad after the Chiefs decided to go in a different direction at the position. He’s mostly remained there since September, with scant appearances in 5 games for Houston (with only 85 total snaps played on offense).

On Saturday, however, Smith might have a bigger moment than expected.

The Texans have enjoyed solid tight end play from Dalton Schultz this season as the primary starter and his importance has only grown since the team lost Tank Dell back in their last game against the Chiefs due to injury. Schultz caught 5 passes for 45 yards and 1 touchdown in the regular-season matchup between both teams.

Behind Schultz is Cade Stover, an impressive rookie pass catcher who was coming on stronger toward season’s end. He had four catches in the Wild Card round alone for the Texans, but he suffered a broken collarbone in the game and the team was forced to place Stover on injured reserve earlier this week.

In Stover’s place, the Texans have now promoted Smith back to the active roster before facing the Chiefs. And that means Smith’s season has come full circle. It will be interesting to see if the veteran can make his presence felt in Kansas City, even as he’s wearing the uniform of a different team.

Former Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce, could make an unexpected impact as the Houston Texans visit Arrowhead Stadium this weekend. Kelce, who was a key player for the Chiefs for several seasons before being traded to the Texans in the offseason, has the potential to come back to haunt his former team.

With his size, speed, and hands, Kelce has always been a nightmare matchup for opposing defenses. Now, facing his former team, he will be looking to prove that he still has what it takes to be a dominant force in the NFL.

As the Texans look to pull off an upset against the Chiefs, Kelce could be the X-factor that tips the scales in their favor. Keep an eye on him as he takes the field at Arrowhead Stadium and watch out for the impact he could make in this highly anticipated matchup.

  • Chiefs playoffs game cold weather tips at Arrowhead Stadium

It’ll be another frigid start to the playoffs for the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend. For the brave Chiefs fans willing to put up with the cold this weekend, preparing for the temperatures ahead of time can help to make the conditions more bearable. Last year, the Chiefs Wild Card matchup against the Miami Dolphins proved to be dangerously cold. Temperatures were minus-4 degrees at kickoff, making it the fourth-coldest game in NFL history. Fans didn’t shy away from the cold, but some left the game with serious health concerns. A Kansas City area hospital said last year that some who attended the game had to undergo amputations, mostly of fingers or toes. Many other cases of frostbite and hypothermia were reported. This Saturday’s matchup at home against the Houston Texans won’t be quite as cold. Temperatures will be around 20 degrees for tailgating with a wind chill of 7 degrees. Temperatures will land at 22 degrees for kickoff with a wind chill of 11 degrees. By the time you’re heading home, it’ll be back at 20 degrees with a wind chill of 9 degrees.Dr. Aaron Kaus with St. Luke’s Hospital pointed out that prolonged exposure to the cold, even if it’s not as bitterly cold as last year’s game, can cause hypothermia or frostbite. “Make sure you dress appropriately … as well as hands and ears and face covered appropriately,” Kaus said. “But also make sure if you’re going to be out there for several hours tailgating or being at the game for several hours you have ways of warming up.”The first step is dressing in layers: The base layer is intended to wick sweat away and keep you dry. Many opt for the long-underwear-style clothing at the base. The second layer should retain heat. People often use fleece or thicker jackets for the middle. The outer layer should act as a shield for precipitation or wind. It serves as a shell to ensure you stay dry. Other winter gear like hats, gloves or mittens and scarves are also a necessity. Thick, insulated shoes and socks are important. Fans can bring blankets to the stadium, which would help with an extra layerDrinking alcohol can also increase the risk of hypothermia. Alcohol can make you feel warmer, but it doesn’t actually raise your body temperature at all. It doesn’t mean tailgaters can’t drink, but alternating between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks can help you avoid dehydration. As we gear up for the Chiefs playoffs game at Arrowhead Stadium, many fans are preparing for the cold weather that often accompanies January football in Kansas City. Here are some tips to help you stay warm and comfortable while cheering on the Chiefs:

    1. Dress in layers: The key to staying warm in cold weather is layering your clothing. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a insulating layer like a fleece or down jacket, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer.

    2. Wear warm accessories: Don’t forget to bring a hat, gloves, scarf, and thick socks to keep your extremities warm. Heat escapes through your head and hands, so covering up these areas is essential.

    3. Bring a blanket or stadium seat cushion: Sitting on cold metal bleachers can quickly chill you to the bone. Consider bringing a blanket or stadium seat cushion to provide some insulation between you and the cold seats.

    4. Hand warmers: Disposable hand warmers are a lifesaver in cold weather. Keep a few pairs in your pockets or gloves to keep your hands toasty warm throughout the game.

    5. Stay hydrated: It’s easy to forget about staying hydrated in cold weather, but it’s just as important as in hot weather. Drink plenty of water before and during the game to keep your body functioning properly.

    6. Take breaks indoors: If you start to feel too cold, don’t be afraid to take a break inside the stadium concourse or a nearby building to warm up before heading back to your seat.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be prepared to brave the cold and cheer on the Chiefs to victory in the playoffs game at Arrowhead Stadium. Go Chiefs!

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - OCTOBER 07: Patrick Mahomes #15 of the Kansas City Chiefs throws a pass to Travis Kelce #87 during the first quarter against the New Orleans Saints at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on October 07, 2024 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by David Eulitt/Getty Images)

The combination of a raucous crowd and Patrick Mahomes’ on-field wizardry has given the Kansas City Chiefs the biggest home-field advantage in the NFL based on the results of a survey of players around the league.

Per ESPN’s Ben Baby, a survey of 111 active players determined that Arrowhead Stadium is the toughest place to play in the NFL right now.

The Chiefs received a total of 57 points, followed by the Seattle Seahawks with 41.5 and Minnesota Vikings with 28.5.

Chiefs fans have proven they have no problem braving the elements to support their team. They were out in full force for the wild card game against the Miami Dolphins in January 2024, despite a kickoff temperature at minus-four degrees with a wind chill of minus-20.

Baby noted several players praised Chiefs fans for their knowledge of the game and how to make things more difficult on the opponent.

“I just think the aura, and the fans are nuts,” Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day told Baby about playing at Arrowhead. “They’re so loud, you can’t even hear yourself think at times.”

It doesn’t hurt that the Chiefs are consistently the best team in the NFL, giving their fans plenty to cheer about.

This is bad news for AFC teams looking to get past the Chiefs, who are 8-0 at Arrowhead this season, in the playoffs. The postseason once again runs through Kansas City after the team secured the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage with a 15-1 record going into Week 18.

The Chiefs have a 10-2 record in home playoff games since 2018 when Mahomes became the starting quarterback. Their last loss was to the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2021 AFC Championship Game.

In a recent poll conducted among NFL players, Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, was ranked as the league’s toughest place to play. The iconic stadium, known for its passionate fan base and deafening noise levels, received high praise from players across the league.

With its electric atmosphere and intimidating crowd, Arrowhead Stadium has long been considered one of the most challenging venues for opposing teams. The Chiefs’ loyal fans, known as the “Arrowhead faithful,” create a hostile environment that can make it difficult for visiting teams to communicate and execute their game plan.

The poll results come as no surprise to Chiefs fans, who take great pride in their home field advantage. Arrowhead Stadium has a rich history of success, including multiple playoff appearances and a Super Bowl championship in 2020.

As the Chiefs continue to dominate on the field, it’s clear that Arrowhead Stadium will remain a fortress for the team and a nightmare for their opponents. With the support of their passionate fans, the Chiefs will look to defend their home turf and continue their winning ways in the years to come. Stay tuned for more updates on the Chiefs and their quest for greatness.
