    Manchester City vs Chelsea

Mikel Arteta has confirmed the reason for both Ødegaard and Mikel Merino’s absences…

Can they help the Gunners stay in the title race?

With one win all season, Southampton are looking to make the most of Newcastle’s wobble last weekend.

Not to be forgotten, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth lock horns in what could be the game of the afternoon.

    Here’s how they line up…

Brighton are also in action against Everton today. Here are how both sides line up…

Arsenal have been handed a massive boost with William Saliba and Myles Lewis-Skelly both back in the XI at Molineux, but Martin Ødegaard misses out through illness.

Cunha, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, starts in attack for the hosts.

Liverpool have named what is becoming their regular starting XI this season, with Salah, Díaz and Cody Gakpo leading the line.

Meanwhile, Ipswich have Julio Enciso on the bench, who takes the no.9 shirt.

On the other hand, Arsenal will be missing Ødegaard, who has been a key player for them this season. The Norwegian midfielder has been instrumental in Arsenal’s attacking play, providing creativity and vision in the final third.

Both teams will be looking to secure a win to boost their respective positions in the league table. It promises to be an exciting and action-packed match, so be sure to tune in to watch all the drama unfold live. #PL #Liverpool #Arsenal #Salah #Ødegaard

  • Martin Odegaard injury update: Arsenal captain missing against Wolves

Arsenal are without captain Martin Odegaard, as their captain was not in their squad for the trip to Wolves on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta has had so many injury problems to contend with and Odegaard being out is obviously a blow as he’s their driving force and creative hub from midfield.

Odegaard joins Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus on the sidelines, while French center back William Saliba was fit enough to return to the Arsenal starting lineup on Saturday.

    Martin Odegaard injury update

Arsenal released their team news for the game at Wolves and simply stated “Odegaard and Merino miss out” with Gunners fans eager to find out why.

Odegaard, 26, is the heartbeat of this Arsenal side and whenever he’s been missing this season they haven’t clicked and looked like the same team.

Unfortunately, Arsenal fans will have to wait a little longer to see Martin Odegaard back in action as the talented midfielder will be missing in the upcoming match against Wolves due to injury. Odegaard, who has been a key player for Arsenal this season, sustained a knock in training and will be undergoing further assessment to determine the extent of his injury.

It’s a blow for Arsenal as they look to secure a vital win against Wolves, but the team will have to do without their captain for this crucial match. Odegaard’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, but the Gunners will have to rally together and put in a strong performance to secure the three points.

Fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Odegaard so that he can return to action soon and continue to make a valuable contribution to the team. In the meantime, Arsenal will have to make do without their influential midfielder and find a way to overcome the challenge posed by Wolves without him. Stay tuned for further updates on Odegaard’s injury and his expected return to action.

Here’s a soccer story via the Associated Press:

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — A bold new vision for the Champions League was launched this season, meaning more games and more money for European soccer’s elite, as well as a rebuttal to the threat of a controversial breakaway super league.

The new-look format, however, was intended to be about more than just further enriching the sport’s wealthiest clubs. It was intended to deliver more drama, more competition and more entertainment to fans than in its previous guise, which was widely deemed to have become stale as the same teams routinely advanced beyond the old group stage.

The introduction of a 36-team league phase of the competition – replacing eight mini groups of four – has provided shock results and left some of Europe’s giants in danger of early elimination, most notably 2023 champion Manchester City.

“It could happen,” said City manager Pep Guardiola, whose team is in the improbable position of 25th in the standings and is currently headed out of the competition with one game to go.

“If we don’t win we won’t deserve it. We haven’t got enough points and we’ll have to accept it.”

The new format is keeping interest alive

UEFA’s decision under pressure from the most influential clubs to introduce a 36-team league was sold on the idea that “every game counts.”

The sense of jeopardy heading into the final round of games next week is high.

Paris Saint-Germain beat City on Wednesday, but could still miss out on the playoffs. Holder and record 15-time winner Real Madrid may have to settle for a playoff, having flirted with elimination itself.

With Bayern Munich, Juventus and last year’s beaten finalist Borussia Dortmund also in the playoff positions the potential for big teams to be drawn against each other means there could be some unexpected early exits.

    But it remains wide open.

So far only Liverpool and Barcelona are guaranteed a place in the last 16, with the top eight teams qualifying automatically and places nine to 24 entering a two-legged playoff.

A bold twist has leveled the playing field

League formats in soccer traditionally follow the same convention. Every team plays each other twice – once at home and once away.

UEFA has scrapped that in favor of a new schedule that sees each of the 36 teams playing one game against eight different opponents.

In the past, the highest-seeded teams have consistently qualified through their respective groups weighted in their favor. It has been far less straightforward this time around.

The initial draw involved four seeding pots, with the highest-ranking teams in pot one and the lowest in pot four. Teams were drawn to play against two opponents from every pot.

UEFA said that would mean more chance of the biggest teams going head-to-head earlier in the competition. It also means more opportunities for the lower ranked teams to play against opposition of a similar standard and ultimately the chance to pick up more points as a result.

Both of those factors appear to have helped produce a more even spread of results, with a greater potential for higher ranked teams to drop points against better opposition.

For instance, PSG has faced City, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid in the league phase.

“If I look at Paris Saint-Germain, every week I think they have the hardest team to face, so they are quite low on the table, which is not their quality, but they are low,” said Liverpool head coach Arne Slot.

The league phase has set the stage for more drama to come

“Strange” and “weird” is how Slot described this new-look first phase. His team is top of the standings with a 100% record having beaten Madrid and German champion Bayer Leverkusen. But he dismissed suggestions that meant Liverpool was the best team in Europe.

And the fact the competition has thrown up so many surprises means Liverpool could yet get a very unfavorable draw in the next round.

For example, if the standings remained the same after next week’s games, Liverpool would face the prospect of Madrid, Bayern, Juventus or Celtic in the last 16. Hardly a reward for finishing top.

As Slot says, “if in tennis you are No. 1-seeded you know it’s always better to face the No. 24 than to face the No. 8, or the No. 12, because this is a ranking that is done for years. But now we are in a new format where some teams are high in the league table because they had a lucky draw, or some teams are low because they had a very difficult draw.”

Before all of that comes what promises to be an epic final round of matches with so many positions still up for grabs and then a playoff round that could feature the two most recent Champions League winners and three from the past five years.

There have been upsets and epics

Lille stunning Madrid on matchday two and Aston Villa beating six-time champion Bayern set the tone for a roller-coaster ride of results.

Sporting Lisbon beat City 4-1 and Guardiola’s team was shocked again as Feyenoord came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at the Etihad Stadium.

In a replay of last year’s final, Madrid was 2-0 down against Dortmund and powered back to 5-2. Even more dramatic was Barcelona’s outrageous comeback against Benfica this week when trailing 3-1 and 4-2. Goals in the 86th and 96th minutes sealed a 5-4 victory.

Then there was PSG vs. City with two of the world’s richest clubs scrapping for survival in this year’s competition. City was ahead 2-0 early in the second half, but pushed to the brink of elimination as PSG won 4-2.

Clubs wanted more head-to-head games against their biggest rivals and that has delivered its share of thrills.

More games means even more demands on players, but more money

At a time when players have raised concerns about an ever more congested calendar, the decision to expand the Champions League is questionable.

The addition of two extra league phase games comes in the same year as FIFA launches its expanded Club World Cup.

FIFPRO, the global players’ union, says its members are at breaking point. It says a significant number of players routinely play 60-70 matches a season when the union’s recommended limit is 55.

But with the new format comes a rise in prize money of at least 25% to a minimum 2.5 billion euros ($2.8 billion).

One more home game in the first phase also means more ticket revenue.

“We are playing two more matches, so that’s something negative about it,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “But it’s something new. And when there is something new you have to look at it and evaluate it.”

  • Preview: Wolves v Arsenal | Pre-Match Report | News

Two of English football’s most traditional teams go head to head in an old-school Saturday 3pm kick-off as we tackle Wolves aiming to utilise the momentum gained from our midweek Champions League success.

Three goals and three points against Dinamo Zagreb was just the tonic to get us back on track after our draw against Aston Villa last weekend, which did see us extend our unbeaten run to 11 league matches stretching back to November.

Such a run would be sweet relief by our relegation-threatened opponents, who after tasting three straight league defeats won’t relish a fixture against a side they’ve lost seven on the bounce to by an aggregate scoreline of 16-2. However, Vitor Pereira has inspired excellent performances since his recent appointment, ensuring history won’t matter too much in the latest chapter of this old rivalry.

    Pereira’s pick-up stalls

Only goal difference is keeping Wolves out of the bottom three heading into this weekend, having recorded just four league wins all campaign. Gary O’Neil went winless in his first 10 matches and despite a brief revival in October and November, four straight losses prompted the move to bring in the experienced Periera just over a month ago.

A new manager bounce saw the Portuguese match O’Neil’s seven-point haul in just three matches courtesy of wins against Leicester City and Manchester United and a draw against Tottenham Hotspur, but three defeats on the spin against Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Chelsea have burst that bubble.

Three goals were conceded in each of those defeats, and while FA Cup progress was made at Bristol City earlier this month, they have lost 11 of their last 15 home Premier League games, keeping just two clean sheets in that time.

    What the managers say

Arteta: “I think we are a much better side than since the start of the season, in every sense because we have evolved a lot as a team. We’ve had some very important experiences and the way we have competed throughout the last six or seven months with everything that has happened, it’s outstanding.

“I know Vitor very well from previous clubs as well and what his ideas are, and it’s very clear how he sets up his team. He has had a really good impact on the team, and it will be a really tough match tomorrow.”

Pereira: “I believe in my players. I believe in our work. I have confidence. Of course, we are facing very strong teams, but we’re still together. We still believe and tomorrow we’ll play at our best level. I want my team to play in the way that we should play. The last game, in my opinion, was not a good game from us because we changed a lot of our behaviours, and this is not what I want from my team. I want identity. I want us to try to play in our way, not to react to the other team.

“Against Arsenal we must show tactical maturity, because they are strong, for sure. But I have confidence in my players. I have confidence in our work. We are working to improve our game. We don’t have a lot of time to do it, but we are trying to do this.”

    Team news

Myles Lewis-Skelly and William Saliba are close to returning after their recent injuries, but it’s touch-and-go as to whether they will feature in the West Midlands.

Ben White continues to be out of contention but he is making good progress from a knee injury, while Bukayo Saka and Takehiro Tomiyasu remained sidelined for the foreseeable future.

It remains to be seen if Mario Lemina will feature after he was dropped from the squad for Monday’s 2-1 loss at Chelsea after refusing to play against Newcastle United amidst reports of transfer interest from Saudi Arabia, and Periera has indicated he may not select the former club captain whilst the window is open.

Toti Gomes has missed the last four matches with a hamstring issue but could be ready to return against us. Boubacar Traore is back in training after knee surgery, but Edson Medina, Yerson Mosquera, Sasa Kalajdzic and Enso Gonzalez are out longer term with the same problem. Ivorian defender Emmanuel Agbadou, who signed from Reims for £16.6 million, will make his Molineux debut.

    TALKING TACTICS

Adrian Clarke: Pereira likes to use a 3-4-2-1 formation and will frequently settle back into a defensive 5-4-1 out of possession against a side of our quality. Averaging less than 40% of the ball in recent matches against Chelsea and Newcastle United, the pattern is likely to see us trying to break them down a low block.

When Wolves do have possession and their wing-backs push on high and wide, we must be wary of those pockets of space they create on the inside. These are the areas where they want to get key man Matheus Cunha onto the ball. Only four top-flight players have attempted more shots than him (63) with 29 of those attempts from outside the box, scoring with four of those which makes him the division’s leading scorer from 18+ yards alongside Cole Palmer. Closing him down anywhere inside the final third will be imperative.

Two other dangermen we must contain are left wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri and striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. Ait-Nouri is skilful and able to produce moments of great imagination, while their centre forward is energetic and keen not to give his markers a moment’s peace.

Wolves have been slow to get going this season, letting in nine goals in the opening 15 minutes – the most of any Premier League side. Losing 11 of the 15 matches where they conceded the opening goal, there is plenty of incentive for us to test their defensive capabilities early on.

    Facts and stats

We have won eight of our 10 Premier League away games against Wolves, our highest win rate against any side we’ve faced more than five times on the road in the competition.

We have scored in each of our last 34 meetings with Wolves in all competitions, since a 1-0 home loss in February 1979. It’s both our longest scoring streak against an opponent, and Wolves’ longest run without a clean sheet.

Wolves have lost 18 of their last 20 Premier League games against sides in the top two of the table.

Only Liverpool (17) are on a longer current unbeaten run in the Premier League than us (12).

We have scored more goals from crosses than any other side in the Premier League this season (11), while Wolves have conceded the most (10).

Leandro Trossard has been involved in more goals against Wolves in the competition than he has against any other opponent (8 – 2 goals, 6 assists). His six Premier League assists against them are more than any other player in the competition’s history.

Matheus Cunha has 15 goal involvements in his last 18 Premier League starts at Molineux (7 goals, 8 assists), including three goals and three assists in his last five home starts.

Martin Odegaard has scored more Premier League goals against Wolves (4) than he has against any other side, netting our second in this exact fixture last term.

    Match officials

For the fourth time this season, one of our games will be presided over by Michael Oliver, with us taking five points from encounters against Aston Villa, Manchester City and Chelsea. Those results extended our run to one loss in our last nine matches under his watch.

Wolves meanwhile have only won six of 25 that Oliver has officiated, and none of the last four. The only one this season was a 2-2 draw at Brighton in November, while this is the third time the Ashington-based referee has been handed this exact fixture, following our Molineux wins in 2020 and 2022.

    Referee: Michael Oliver
    Assistants: Stuart Burt, James Mainwaring
    Fourth official: Tony Harrington
    VAR: Darren England
    Assistant VAR: Adrian Holmes

    Recent visits to Wolves

Molineux has been a happy hunting ground for us in the Premier League era, having won eight of our last 10 visits there, including each of the last three without conceding a single goal.

Last season saw us triumph 2-0 thanks to strikes from Leandro Trossard and Martin Odegaard to keep us in the title hunt, while the campaign before our Norwegian skipper grabbed a brace to send us to the top of the table ahead of the 2022 World Cup break.

The season before saw us claim a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Gabriel, despite the sending off of Gabriel Martinelli for two quickfire bookable offences, while Wolves’ last success came in 2020/21 when we saw both David Luiz and Bernd Leno red-carded.

  • Arsenal v Dinamo Zagreb, Real Madrid v Salzburg, Celtic v Young Boys and more: Champions League – live | Champions League

Ahead of tonight’s game Mikel Arteta has been talking about the power of music, and Ed Aarons has been hearing him do it:

Music is very much part of our culture. We have music in a lot of different places, and I think music has the capacity to change your mood, to change your energy to a certain place. And I think it happens in all of us. You play a song and immediately you feel different, and we have certain songs that trigger something in our team because they have some history as well with us, and I will use it when we believe it’s the right way to do it. I have a lot, depending on the day, that’s what I’m saying. It’s not about my energy, and sometimes I play a song many, many times. I don’t know, it’s a feeling.

That is something that we’ve done for many years now and it is part of training. We use music as another element of our training sessions to build the energy and change certain purposes that we want in the training session, and I think the players enjoy it. Depending on the day, sometimes certain players pick certain songs – the first song, the first two songs, the last song – it’s the same as in the dressing room really.

    Much more here:

The teams for the 8pm kick-offs have now been picked and publicised, and the line-ups are in the first post at the bottom of this page.

The current Champions League league table looks like this:

Hello world, have some team news!

Welcome to the second and final day of the seventh and penultimate week of Champions League league fixtures. If it looks like Liverpool will be the Champions League league champions – none of today’s teams are capable of overtaking them – they won’t win anything more than top seeding in the next bit for doing so, and meanwhile there are precious spots in the playoff-dodging top eight to play for, and elimination-sidestepping places in the top 24 up for grabs, so that’s exciting.

[It is, to be more truthful, bewildering. I continue to find the new Champions League format completely bonkers. But it indisputably does put two football teams on the same pitch at the same time, which I suppose is the main thing]

Tonight’s Champions League fixtures look like this (8pm kick-off unless stated otherwise, start-of-day league positions in brackets):

    Arsenal (5) v Dinamo Zagreb (25)
Arsenal have only conceded two goals so far, though they have managed to convert those two setbacks into a defeat and a (goalless, to be fair) draw. Still, with a trip to 30th-placed Girona next week, they have a place in the knockout stages within their grasp. They also have Riccardo Calafiori and Ethan Nwaneri back from injury, which is a bonus.

Arsenal: Raya, Timber, Gabriel, Kiwior, Zinchenko, Odegaard, Jorginho, Rice, Sterling, Havertz, Martinelli. Subs: Neto, Setford, Tierney, Partey, Trossard, Merino, Calafiori, Butler-Oyedeji, Kabia, Kacurri, Nwaneri.
Dinamo Zagreb: Nevistic, Ristovski, Mmaee, Bernauer, Torrente, Pierre Gabriel, Rog, Ademi, Stojkovic, Kulenovic, Baturina. Subs: Zagorac, Filipovic, Kacavenda, Hoxha, Cordoba, Pjaca, Mbuku, Misic, Bakovic, Cutuk, Pavic, Spikic.
    Referee: Daniel Siebert (Germany).

    Celtic (23) v Young Boys (36)
Young Boys are bottom of the table, one of three teams without a point to their names and with a goal difference, after six games, of -19. Celtic travel to Aston Villa next week, and need three points here. “We’ve done ever so well so far but we don’t want to be the nearly team,” said Callum McGregor.

Celtic: Schmeichel, Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Taylor, Engels, McGregor, Hatate, Kuhn, Furuhashi, Maeda. Subs: Sinisalo, Bain, Scales, Palma, Idah, Valle, Yang, McCowan, Nawrocki, Bernardo, Ralston, Murray.
Young Boys: Keller, Athekame, Camara, Benito, Hadjam, Males, Niasse, Lakomy, Monteiro, Ugrinic, Ganvoula. Subs: von Ballmoos, Marzino, Zoukrou, Pfeiffer, Itten, Imeri, Colley, Chaiwa, Elia, Virginius, Blum, Lauper.
    Referee: Rohit Saggi (Norway).

    Feyenoord (20) v Bayern Munich (12)
If you want guaranteed goals this might be the one for you: Feyenoord have kept one clean sheet since October and none since November. Bayern have only failed to score twice in all competitions this season: once when they started this one at Villa Park and again against Leverkusen in early December, seven games and 24 goals ago.

Feyenoord: Bijlow, Nieuwkoop, Trauner, Hancko, Smal, Stengs, Beelen, Milambo, Hadj Moussa, Gimenez, Igor Paixao. Subs: Wellenreuther, Ka, Ueda, Gonzalez, Bueno, Ivanusec, Carranza, Mitchell, Nadje, Osman.
Bayern Munich: Neuer, Laimer, Upamecano, Kim, Davies, Kimmich, Goretzka, Olise, Musiala, Coman, Kane. Subs: Ulreich, Schmitt, Gnabry, Sane, Dier, Guerreiro, Muller, Tel, Stanisic, Pavlovic, Aznou.
    Referee: Francois Letexier (France).

    Milan (15) v Girona (30)
Milan’s domestic form is patchy, and they lost 2-0 at Juventus on Saturday, but since losing their first two Champions League games they’ve sorted themselves out and now have their future in their own hands. Girona have lost five of their six games in the competition, and their last is at home to Arsenal next Wednesday.

Milan: Maignan, Emerson Royal, Pavlovic, Gabbia, Hernandez, Fofana, Bennacer, Musah, Reijnders, Leao, Morata. Subs: Sportiello, Torriani, Calabria, Pulisic, Okafor, Zeroli, Bartesaghi, Terracciano, Camarda, Abraham.
Girona: Gazzaniga, Frances, David Lopez, Krejci, Blind, Herrera, Romeu, Tsygankov, van de Beek, Gil Salvatierra, Abel Ruiz. Subs: Pau Lopez, Arnau Martinez, Stuani, Asprilla, Danjuma, Juanpe, Solis, Martin, Portu, Clua, Artero.
    Referee: Tobias Stieler (Germany).

    Paris St-Germain (26) v Manchester City (24)
City are in the last of the play-off spots currently and still one point ahead of PSG, so whoever loses this one, if indeed either side does, will be in serious danger of calamitous elimination. City end their league campaign next Wednesday at home to Club Brugge, PSG away at Stuttgart. This game has a liveblog all of its own, so if you don’t want to divide your attention you might be better off heading there.

PSG: Donnarumma, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Neves, Fabian, Lee, Doue, Barcola. Subs: Safonov, Tenas, Kimpembe, Goncalo Ramos, Dembele, Asensio, Hernandez, Mayulu, Zaire Emery, Lucas Beraldo, Zague, Tape.
Man City: Ederson, Matheus Luiz, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol, Silva, Kovacic, Foden, De Bruyne, Savio, Haaland. Subs: Ortega, Carson, Stones, Grealish, Gundogan, Wright, Alleyne, O’Reilly, Lewis, McAtee.
    Referee: Szymon Marciniak (Poland).

    RB Leipzig (34) v Sporting (19) (5.45pm)
Leipzig are absolutely stinking out the Champions League, with not a point to their names and group-stage elimination already guaranteed, but they’re fifth in the Bundesliga and have scored in each of their last six games in all competitions. Sporting have lost their last two European games and need to get back on course.

Real Madrid (22) v Red Bull Salzburg (33)
Salzburg haven’t played a competitive game since 14 December – this is a first competitive fixture for their “new” head coach, Thomas Letsch, who was appointed on 18 December. This feels sub-optimal.

Real Madrid: Courtois, Valverde, Asencio, Rudiger, Mendy, Ceballos, Modric, Rodrygo, Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Mbappe. Subs: Lunin, Gonzalez, Alaba, Tchouameni, Guler, Endrick, Vallejo, Garcia, Diaz, Ramon, Andres.
Red Bull Salzburg: Blaswich, Dedic, Samson Baidoo, Blank, Terzic, Yeo, Capaldo, Bidstrup, Gloukh, Dorgeles, Daghim. Subs: Schlager, Hamzic, Bajcetic, Clark, Diambou, Kawamura, Ratkov, Gourna-Douath, Mellberg, Morgalla, Piatkowski.
    Referee: Glenn Nyberg (Sweden).

    Shakhtar Donetsk (28) v Brest (9) (5.45pm)
Brest are the surprise package of the Champions League and of the six games they’ve played since beating PSV in their last continental outing they’ve won five of them. Shakhtar, fresh from league defeat at Polessya Zhitomir, need to overturn the form book.

    Sparta Prague (29) v Internazionale (7)
Sparta have lost their last four Champions League games and now find themselves four points off the play-offs with two games to play, those being against Inter and Bayer Leverkusen. In sport there is always hope, but in this case there’s not much of it. Inter have only conceded one goal in the competition so far but it was enough to lose them their last game at Leverkusen, though they have won seven and lost one of nine in all competitions since then.

Sparta Prague: Vindahl-Jensen, Vitik, Panak, Sorensen, Wiesner, Sadilek, Laci, Kairinen, Rynes, Olatunji, Birmancevic. Subs: Surovcik, Heerkens, Suchomel, Ross Jensen, Danek, Pesek, Haraslin, Krasniqi, Zeleny, Rus, Penxa.
Internazionale: Sommer, Pavard, de Vrij, Bastoni, Dumfries, Barella, Asllani, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco, Lautaro Martinez, Thuram. Subs: Josep Martinez, Calligaris, Zielinski, Arnautovic, Frattesi, Buchanan, Carlos Augusto, Darmian, Zanchetta, Taremi, Re Cecconi.
    Referee: Alejandro Hernandez (Spain).

  • Abols, with four languages in his arsenal, glad he gave NHL another shot

Abols, with four languages in his arsenal, glad he gave NHL another shot originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

VOORHEES, N.J. — Rodrigo Abols was just starting to wake up Sunday morning when he received a phone call from assistant general manager Alyn McCauley.

“It was one way to make an off day even better,” Abols said.

The 29-year-old was headed to the NHL.

With Ryan Poehling placed on injured reserve, Abols, a Latvian center who had spent the last four seasons playing overseas, was called up by the Flyers. He joined the club for practice Monday, putting himself on the doorstep of his dream.

And he should have no problem connecting with his new teammates. Being able to speak four languages — English, Latvian, Swedish and Russian — can only help.

“This group and this room has been praised a lot of times,” Abols said. “It’s very easy to fit in here.”

Abols signed with the Flyers last offseason just ahead of the June 15 deadline for players under European contracts. Because of the timing, he admitted to being a bit surprised when general manager Danny Briere reached out with the opportunity.

But Abols was ready to rejoin the AHL. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Canucks in 2016. Prior to this season, the last time he played in North America was 2019-20, when the coronavirus pandemic abruptly shut things down.

So when the Flyers approached him last summer, he was compelled to leave the SHL for a chance at his NHL debut. That could come Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Center when the Flyers host the Red Wings (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).

“I kind of felt it inside from the last time when I was here with all the COVID and stuff, there were some questions unanswered for myself,” Abols said. “I didn’t want to let this opportunity slip. When I’m done with hockey, I’m glad at least I came here and gave it another shot.”

In 34 games this season with AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley, the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder has put up nine goals and 10 assists. Over his last 10 games, he recorded three goals and four assists. He has quality length and plays a responsible game, with the ability to win key faceoffs.

What were the reports on Abols?

“That he has been playing well,” John Tortorella said. “Going to give him a chance here. … He’s a center and I guess he has been playing some pretty good hockey there.”

Abols centered Olle Lycksell and Garnet Hathaway on the Flyers’ fourth line at practice. Scott Laughton’s status for Tuesday is uncertain. The alternate captain was not at practice because of a personal family matter.

For Abols, he’ll look to be himself if he gets his chance in the Flyers’ lineup. An NHL debut would make the journey all worth it.

“It’s a dream come true to get an opportunity to play here,” Abols said. “Try to make the most of it and use the strengths I have and see what happens from there.”

  • Arsenal turn attention to sensational Victor Osimhen deal

Arsenal have turned their attention to signing Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen this month, sources have told Football Insider.

The Gunners are exploring the market for a late-window striker signing after losing Gabriel Jesus to injury for the rest of the season.

Sources have said that Arsenal are exploring a deal for Osimhen, who is on a season-long loan at Galatasaray, and have made contact over what would be a sensational late-deal.

The Premier League club’s interest is only at the early stages and it is not known if a transfer for the prolific forward will be possible in the next fortnight.

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta need forward reinforcements

Osimhen has been thriving on loan at Galatasaray after falling out of favour at Napoli. The Nigerian striker has scored 14 goals and provided six assists in just 18 appearances this season, showcasing his quality.

This development follows reports from Football Insider in December, revealing that Arsenal are monitoring Osimhen for a potential transfer.

Injuries are plaguing their attack, including Bukayo Saka and the long-term absence of Jesus. Fans are urging the club to sign a striker in the January transfer window following these injuries.

Currently, Kai Havertz is the only striker available to Mikel Arteta. However, he is struggling for form, having failed to score in his last three matches.

Concerns are growing over the right-wing position, as Raheem Sterling remains the only fit option in that role.

Supporters believe that Arteta is pressing the board for reinforcements after his recent comments during a press conference ahead of their clash with Aston Villa, hinting at the need for attacking reinforcements.

Whether a move for the striker will proceed remains uncertain, given his impressive season in Turkey.

In other news, Arsenal are to step up efforts to sign in this position before the transfer window ends.
