  • Why William Saliba Isn’t Playing for Arsenal vs. Aston Villa

Arsenal face a tough challenge in the Premier league when former manager, Unai Emery, and eighth place Aston Villa come to Emirates Stadium.

To make matters worse, they’ll be without one of their key defenders: William Saliba. The French defender was not named to the squad facing Villa on Saturday, Jan. 18 with what the club is calling a minor issue.

Jurrien Timber is slated to start at center back next to Gabriel while Thomas Partey fills in at right back.

Fans hope Saliba won’t be out for too long given the injuries to Bukayo Saka, Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White and Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal have the best defense in the league so far this campaign conceding just 19 goals in 21 games, but Timber will now have to deputize centrally adding even more minutes to a player that could use a rest coming off an ACL injury.

Still, Timber is well equipped to fill in for Saliba and pair Gabriel in the heart of the defense.

There has been much speculation and confusion surrounding the absence of William Saliba from Arsenal’s matchday squad against Aston Villa. Many fans have been left scratching their heads, wondering why the highly-rated young defender hasn’t been given a chance to showcase his talents in such an important game.

One possible reason for Saliba’s omission could be due to tactical reasons. Mikel Arteta may have felt that the 19-year-old was not yet ready to handle the pressure of such a high-stakes match, and decided to leave him out of the squad in order to protect his development.

Another possibility could be related to fitness issues. Saliba has recently returned from a loan spell at Nice, where he suffered a couple of injuries that may have impacted his readiness to play for Arsenal. It’s possible that Arteta is taking a cautious approach with the young defender in order to avoid any further setbacks.

Regardless of the reason behind Saliba’s absence, it’s clear that Arsenal fans are eager to see him in action. With his immense potential and talent, many are hoping that it won’t be long before Saliba is given the opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stage. Until then, fans will have to wait patiently for his time to shine.

  • Arsenal v Aston Villa: Premier League – live | Premier League

    Key events

Brentford 0-2 Liverpool: Nunez scores his second, cutting inside and roofing the ball past Mark Flekken after running on to a pass from Harvey Elliott. Liverpool left it late but look to have got the job done.

Brentford 0-1 Liverpool: On a day of profligacy and poor finishing from assorted Liverpool players, an uncharacteristically composed strike from Darwin Nunez looks to have won all three points for his side in added time at the Gtech Stadium.

Brentford v Liverpool: With five minutes to go, Thomas Frank’s side are currently holding Liverpool at the Gtech Community Stadium, so as things stand Arsenal could move within two points of the League leaders (having played one game more) with a win over Villa.

Mikel Arteta: Speaking ahead of this game yesterday, Arsenal’s manager reflected on his side’s win over Spurs on Tuesday night before turning his thoughts to tonight’s task.

“I loved the attitude that the team played with, a great occasion in front of our people, the atmosphere was brilliant but we move on to the next one, that’s a big game,” he said. “We will try as hard as possible to prepare in the best way to win. We know the difficulty of the team that they are, that’s why they are performing so well. Great players, and a great coach.”

On Arsenal’s title credentials: “If we refer to the stats, the stats said that we were the best team in the league but the reality is that we didn’t win the league so we still need to improve and be better,” he said. “We are playing to win and that’s exactly where we want to be. The pressure comes from within. You have to thrive to be the best that you possibly can be.”

Those teams: William Saliba is a conspicuous absentee for Arsenal, having pulled up lame with a hamstring strain towards the end of his side’s win over Spurs in midweek.

We can probably expect to see Jurrien Timber fill in at centre-back alongside Gabriel, with Thomas Partey lining up at right-back. This game has also come too soon for Riccardo Calafiori, who is not in the matchday squad. Myles Lewis-Skelly keep his place at left-back, where he impressed his nan with his tough tackling against Tottenham.

Unai Emery brings in Ian Maatsen at left-back for Villa, with Lucas Digne missing out. New signing Donyell Malen is on a strong substitutes’ bench, where he’ll be able to make smalltalk with Jhon Duran and Leon Bailey, among other new teammates.

    Early team news

Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri, Bukayo Saka, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu are all sidelined with injury, but Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori could return from injury after a three-game absence. Whether or not he will start ahead of Myles Lewis-Skelly, who played so well against Tottenham, remains to be seen.

Unai Emery is without Pau Torres, John McGinnn and Ross Barkley, who are all injured. Diego Carlos is also expected to be unavailable because of a minor niggle. The defender was linked with a move to Fenerbahce by his manager yesterday and is expected to leave Villa before the end of the transfer window.

In better news for Emery, the Spaniard can call on Donyell Malen, the 25-year-old Dutch winger who signed for Villa from Borussia Dortmund yesterday and could make his Premier League debut at the home of the club where he spent two years as a youth team player.

“He’s used to playing as a seven, sometimes an 11 on the left, but also as a number 10,” said Unai Emery of Malen. “He’s always close to the opponent’s box and scores and assists goals – we will need a player like him to be a threat to the opponent in behind.”

Premier League: Arsenal v Aston Villa

Following Tuesday night’s home win over Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates for what could be a sterner test of their title credentials than the one they passed fairly easily in midweek.

Unbeaten in four games, Aston Villa arrive in London on the back of three consecutive wins and their manager Unai Emery will be hopeful his team can deliver the goods on a return to an old stomping ground where he unable to work his managerial magic. Kick-off at the Emirates Stadium is at 5.30pm (GMT) but we’ll have team news and build-up in the meantime.

  • Donyell Malen transfer: New Aston Villa forward could come back to haunt former side Arsenal after £21m transfer | Football News

Just days after completing his £21m switch from Borussia Dortmund to Aston Villa, Donyell Malen could be in line to make his Premier League debut against his former club Arsenal, live on Sky Sports.

With Jaden Philogene’s return to Villa Park lasting just six months and Leon Bailey failing to recapture his scintillating form from last season – which saw him net 10 goals and add nine assists in the top-flight – it was clear Unai Emery needed reinforcements.

Villa’s interest in Malen has been long standing but just over two weeks into the winter window, they had their man.

Malen now returns to England eight years after leaving the Arsenal academy to join PSV Eindhoven in 2017 – and might just have a point to prove when the two sides meet on Saturday Night Football.

    Saturday 18th January 5:00pm

    Kick off 5:30pm

Will Malen have a point to prove?

After idolising Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp throughout his development, joining Arsenal in 2015 was a dream come true for Malen.

However, his exit from the club two years later – after scoring 27 goals in 67 appearances for the academy teams – soured his time at the Emirates Stadium.

    Image:

The forward, who left without making a first-team appearance, was reportedly referred to as “too fat” by Andries Jonker, then head of youth development, prior to his exit.

Reflecting on his time in north London after securing a move to PSV for £540,000, he told Dutch media: “I heard him say that I came in too fat.

“That surprised me. They had already been working at Arsenal for two months when I arrived. Then of course you are not immediately at the same level.

“I was not yet match fit, but too fat? No. It was going well in England, but I still wanted to leave Arsenal because I had the opportunity to sign for PSV. I took that chance.”

Seven years later and with his price tag now skyrocketing to just under 40 times what Arsenal received, Malen could be set to haunt his former side in their quest to close the four-point gap to Liverpool in the title race.

    Arsenal could use Malen’s talents

Football works in mysterious ways and Malen being back on familiar turf and possibly making his debut against his former club – who arguably need someone of his profile – is the latest twist in the Premier League tale.

The 25-year-old is well versed in playing across all positions in a front three and with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Ethan Nwaneri all injured, and Raheem Sterling struggling, his talents seem perfectly fit to address the current issues at the Gunners.

Watch every Bundesliga goal and assist from Aston Villa’s latest signing 25-year-old forward Donyell Malen for Borussia Dortmund

While not prolific in the goal-scoring department with 92 goals to his name across 237 senior appearances in his club career, the versatile forward offers another prong to any attack, as well as experience on the Champions League and international stage.

For Villa, the new signing will take pressure off Bailey on the right, provide added cover for Jacob Ramsey on the left and can even operate as the second striker that Emery so often deploys in the form of Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans or captain John McGinn.

    Emery on Malen’s versatility

“He is usually playing as a number seven, sometimes as an number 11 on the side, sometimes can play as a number 10.

“He is always close to the attacking third, close to the opponent’s box and scores goals and assists.

“We need a player like him to try and threaten the opponent.”

    Malen’s versatility by numbers

Predominantly used in a partnership up-front while at PSV, Malen earned himself a £25m move to Dortmund in 2021 after showcasing his potential with 46 goals in 76 outings when deployed as a forward.

Having a dominant figure like Erling Haaland to contend with, and Serhou Guirassy since then, meant the Netherlands international was regularly used out wide but continued to show his worth by contributing in the final third and creating for his team-mates.

His final tally after leaving the Westfalenstadion came in at a modest 39 goals and 20 assists but with Emery’s track record of getting the best out of players and using them in unorthodox ways, there is enough evidence to suggest his time in the Second City could be fruitful.

Two opposite ends of the striker spectrum

While Malen addresses several issues for Villa and adds crucial depth, the problems for Arsenal only continue to grow.

Rocked by the confirmation that forward Jesus had suffered an ACL injury during the FA Cup defeat to Manchester United, Mikel Arteta has been left with only Kai Havertz to rely on in the forward areas.

Sky Sports News understands the Gunners are actively searching for reinforcements in the area but heading into this fixture, the two sides will be at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to strikers.

While Arsenal hope for Havertz to rediscover his finest form in-front of goal as their lone option, Villa are quite the opposite – even before the addition of Malen – as Emery aims to spread sufficient minutes to both Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran.

Aston Villa strikers Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran compared ahead of the clash against Arsenal
    Image:
Aston Villa strikers Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran compared ahead of the clash against Arsenal

Duran returned to the match-day squad against Everton after serving his two-match suspension following the red card against Newcastle – and after netting four goals in his last four outings prior to the time on the sidelines, will likely want his starting role back.

Meanwhile, Watkins, who provided 13 assists to go alongside his 19 goals in the league last season, still currently holds top spot in the goal-scoring department for Villa with nine. Which is two more than his counter-part has managed in just four league starts.

Having two top forwards vying for the starting role is an unfamiliar problem to have in modern football – and it is one Arsenal likely envy.

Donyell Malen transfer: New Aston Villa forward could come back to haunt former side Arsenal after £21m transfer | Football News

Aston Villa’s latest signing, Donyell Malen, has made a big move from PSV Eindhoven to the Premier League in a £21m deal. The Dutch forward has caught the eye of many top clubs with his impressive performances in the Eredivisie, and now he is set to make his mark in the English top-flight.

However, it’s not just Villa fans who should be excited about Malen’s arrival. Arsenal fans should also take note, as the 22-year-old could potentially come back to haunt his former side. Malen was part of the Gunners’ youth academy before making the move to PSV in 2017.

With his pace, skill, and eye for goal, Malen has the potential to be a thorn in the side of Arsenal’s defense when Villa face them in the upcoming season. His ability to create chances and score goals could prove to be a real headache for the Gunners, who may regret letting him go.

Arsenal will be hoping that Malen doesn’t come back to haunt them, but Villa fans will be delighted to have such a talented forward in their ranks. It promises to be an exciting season ahead, with Malen set to make a big impact in the Premier League. Watch this space!

  • Premier League Predictions and best bets: Can Arsenal edge closer to Liverpool? | Football News

Our betting expert Jones Knows provides his insight across Saturday’s Premier League action where title-chasing Liverpool and Arsenal are hunting maximum points.

Brentford’s style of play does lend itself to soaking up pressure and their shots faced numbers are always higher than what you’d expect from a team competing in mid-table.

Only Southampton have faced more shots this season than the Bees (376). This opens up betting opportunities in the player shots markets for Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold has a fine record in that regard against Brentford.

He’s had 11 shots in his six meetings with Thomas Frank’s team in the Premier League, posting two or more shots in four of those matches whilst his overall shots average of 1.7 per game in the last 15 across all competitions is very healthy.

The 11/10 with Sky Bet for him to register two or more shots does look generous.

    SCORE PREDICTION: 1-3

Antonee Robinson is 4/1 for an assist with Sky Bet

When you have one of the most creative players in the division coming up against a team that don’t know how to defend their box, punters should be getting excited.

And that’s the case here with Antonee Robinson’s assist price of 4/1 with Sky Bet.

Fulham’s rampaging full-back took his tally to nine assists for the season with his assist double at West Ham – only Bukayo Saka (10) and Mohamed Salah (13) have recorded more now. Getting Robinson into dangerous positions down that left flank is a clear tactic from Marco Silva as shown by the American’s 103 open play crosses this season – 19 more than any other player in the league.

Meanwhile, Leicester have shipped 20 goals in their last eight games, conceding two or more in each of those. Robinson will create multiple chances.

    SCORE PREDICTION: 1-3

West Ham’s terrible defence is the biggest challenge facing Graham Potter.

Across their last 40 Premier League games, West Ham have conceded a per game average of 2.13 goals – the worst record of any ever-present Premier League team in that timeframe. There haven’t been any signs of improvement on that front in Potter’s first two games where the Hammers have conceded four goals and 4.63 worth of expected goals against.

With Palace in good form, losing just one of their last 10 and winning three of their last four on the road, backing a goalscorer for them makes appeal and Daniel Munoz at 9/1 with Sky Bet looks overpriced. He’s always making aggressive runs into the box from the right and did find the net recently against both Newcastle and Manchester City.

    SCORE PREDICTION: 1-2

    Arsenal vs Aston Villa

Arsenal vs Aston Villa, live on Sky Sports

There were huge Ashley Cole vibes about Myles Lewis-Skelly against Tottenham – he knocked my socks off with his performance. He is a freak. At just 18-years-old he relished the north London derby occasion and played well above his years.

No player made more tackles for Arsenal (4), won possession more times (6) and had a higher passing accuracy (93.8 per cent) than Lewis-Skelly as the statistics backed up the visuals.

But a betting angle that continues to draw me in is his ability to draw fouls. He plays with a very streetwise nature and is happy to initiate contact and hit the deck to get himself out of a sticky situation.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

FREE TO WATCH: Highlights from Arsenal’s match against Tottenham in the Premier League.

In his eight starts he’s drawn 18 fouls, putting him above the two fouls drawn per game average and the visual of his performances back up the data that he’s going to be a great player to back in the to be fouled market. You can get 11/8 with Sky Bet on him drawing two or more fouls which looks a very interesting angle in what should be another gritty home win for the Gunners.

    SCORE PREDICTION: 2-1

As the Premier League season heats up, all eyes are on the top teams as they battle it out for the coveted title. With Liverpool currently leading the pack, Arsenal will be looking to edge closer to the top spot in their upcoming matches.

In this week’s Premier League predictions, we take a look at the key matchups and make our best bets for the weekend.

    1. Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace
Arsenal have been in fine form recently, with new signing Ben White bolstering their defense. Crystal Palace, on the other hand, have struggled to find consistency this season. We predict that Arsenal will come out on top in this match, with a 2-1 victory.

    Best bet: Arsenal to win

    2. Manchester United vs. Aston Villa
Manchester United have had a mixed start to the season, but with Cristiano Ronaldo in top form, they will be looking to secure a win against Aston Villa. Villa have been impressive so far, but we predict that United will come out on top with a 3-1 victory.

    Best bet: Over 2.5 goals

    3. Liverpool vs. Brentford
Liverpool have been in scintillating form this season, with their attacking trio of Salah, Mane, and Jota firing on all cylinders. Brentford have been the surprise package of the season, but we predict that Liverpool will secure a comfortable 3-0 victory in this match.

Best bet: Liverpool to win to nil

With these predictions in mind, Arsenal will be looking to close the gap on Liverpool at the top of the table. Can they pull off a surprise and edge closer to the league leaders? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – the Premier League title race is heating up, and every match counts. Stay tuned for more exciting football action in the coming weeks.

  • Haaland’s new contract, Slegers in at Arsenal, team news and football transfer latest – live | Premier League

    Key events

Today’s Rumour Mill allows us a segue involving Brighton. Read today’s whispers here…

Brighton were the other winners last night as they ended an eight-game streak without a Premier League victory (eight of those were draws, mind) with a 2-0 success at Ipswich to take them up to ninth. Nick Ames was at Portman Road.

Haaland has 11 Man City hat-tricks to his name so far but none yet in 2025. One man who has is Amad Diallo, who rescued Manchester United with a late, late treble to haul them back from an embarrassment against bottom club Southampton and secure a 3-1 win last night.

Man Utd 3-1 Southampton: Jamie Jackon’s match report
Reaction from Old Trafford: Diallo and Ruben Amorim quotes

That’s quite a start to the morning blog, isn’t it. I know it’s not the main focus but that Man City shirt font remains troublesome.

    Preamble

Good morning. Let’s start at Manchester City, where Erling Haaland has put pen to paper on a new contract that ties him to the club until … 2034. Yes. Here’s are the details from Jamie Jackson.

Erling Haaland has signed a record new nine-and-a-half-year deal with Manchester City that ties him to the champions until 2034, with the centre-forward stating he is “super-happy and proud”.

The Norwegian, who was previously contracted until 2027, has proved a phenomenon at City, scoring 111 goals in only 125 games since signing from Borussia Dortmund in summer 2022. He got 52 goals in his first season, as City claimed the treble in 2022-23.

The length of contract is a record for a player in domestic competition and his salary is thought to be a basic of about £500,000 a week.

The morning’s other big news is the appointment of 35-year-old Renee Slegers as Arsenal’s new permanent head coach. Here’s Suzanne Wrack with the report on that before WSL gets back underway after a winter break.

Arsenal have named the interim head coach Renée Slegers as the permanent successor to Jonas Eidevall after an impressive temporary spell in charge.

The 35-year-old has signed a contract to the end of the 2025-26 season after three months as interim.

“Renée was the standout candidate of a thorough recruitment process,” said Arsenal’s director of women’s football, Clare Wheatley.

In a recent turn of events, Erling Haaland has signed a new contract with Borussia Dortmund, ending all speculations about his future. Meanwhile, Arsenal has appointed Sven Mislintat as their new sporting director, who has wasted no time in making his mark by bringing in Jan Slegers as the new manager.

In other news, here is a roundup of the latest team news and football transfer updates from the Premier League:

    – Manchester United are reportedly in talks with Real Madrid over a potential transfer for Raphael Varane. The French defender is said to be keen on a move to the Premier League.

    – Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku, with a deal expected to be completed in the coming days.

    – Liverpool are looking to bolster their midfield options and have identified Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez as a potential target.

    – Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Juventus over a possible deal for midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri in Bukayo Saka’s absence – this is how he’s developed since debut

Ethan Nwaneri will look back fondly on his first two away trips to Brentford.

In September 2022, he became the Premier League’s youngest-ever player at 15 when he replaced Fabio Vieira in added time. Back at the Gtech Community Stadium two and a half years later, he became the third-youngest player ever to start a Premier League game for Arsenal at the age of 17 years and 286 days. Only Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott did it younger.

He took the injured Bukayo Saka’s place on the right wing as Mikel Arteta continued to experiment in the England international’s absence.

“In that position, it wasn’t because of the bug,” the Arsenal manager said in his post-match press conference, referencing the illness that had kept several out of the game. “It was a decision I made because I thought he was the best player to play in that position to start the game. And because there was a story there with his debut here. Making his Premier League debut, sometimes that feeling comes in and you feel it’s the right one and then who knows.”

Although he is a natural midfielder, Nwaneri’s development through Arsenal’s academy has helped his readiness to fill Saka’s shoes on the right. He recently admitted to the Arsenal website that he had been used in defensive midfield at points. The Athletic has also detailed his use not just as an attacking midfielder, but as a winger on both flanks and as a centre-forward for the under-18s and under-21s in the 2022-23 season.

Arteta recently spoke in a press conference about how that could see him develop into a striker in the future. For now, however, the work and talent of Nwaneri saw Arteta trust him to contribute off the right flank. Although most of his football for the first team has come in midfield, Arteta has drip-fed Nwaneri minutes on the right wing going back to last season.

When Arsenal were 6-0 up away to West Ham last February, Nwaneri was the one to replace Saka on the right. He played 13 minutes and constantly combined with Martin Odegaard, who has been a reference point for his growth in recent seasons. In an October interview, academy manager Per Mertesacker said: “In Ethan’s case you see where he will develop and actually transfer his game into those pocket areas, like Martin Odegaard.

“Ethan is an attacking midfielder who can play multiple positions but sometimes to develop his running in behind and defending as a winger (he may play elsewhere) and Mikel will use it to his strength.”

That has proven to be the case. Nwaneri shows different qualities out wide from the ‘pocket play’ when he plays in midfield. The teenager was confident enough to go on the outside of Keane Lewis-Potter to get crosses in off his weaker right foot early on against Brentford.

Nwaneri’s ball retention was then key after the game turned with Bryan Mbeumo’s opener. In a moment that could have contributed to the increasingly frantic nature of the first half, he received the ball with three players around him. A couple of feints later, he flicked the ball through to Jurrien Timber, who found Odegaard. The captain won a foul in midfield and a sense of calm was restored.

Nwaneri was found again in a similar position two minutes later and skipped by a challenge before passing forward to Gabriel Jesus, who equalised in the same possession. Those dribbles are already one of Nwaneri’s standout traits. His nutmeg and drive past Lewis-Potter in the second half may have raised eyebrows to those watching on TV, but moments like that have been part of his game since he was in the academy.

That ability saw him lead the game in progressive carries (five).

A similar run and shot breathed life into the Emirates at 2-2 against Leicester City in September. In these moments, Nwaneri appears to glide with the ball more than running with it.

“It was always there,” Des Ryan, formerly Arsenal’s head of sports medicine and athletic development and now director of sport at Ireland’s University of Galway, tells The Athletic.

“You could see it at the early age groups. It’s a dream for a strength and conditioner/sports scientist because you don’t have to teach a person how to run (with the ball). He had the movement skills. You could develop his strength, so he could exert more force through the ground and condition him, so he could do it repeatedly. They’re the easy ones like with Bukayo and Serge Gnabry too.”

Nwaneri had a part to play in Arsenal’s second and third goals (Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

Importantly, like the academy graduate he was deputising, Nwaneri also played a key part in Arsenal’s second and third goals. His corner in the build-up to Mikel Merino’s goal was delivered perfectly to give Mark Flekken grief in the Brentford goal. This should not come as a surprise. Arsenal’s players and staff have trusted the youngster to take corners when he has been on in place of Saka against Bournemouth (when they were 2-0 down), Liverpool and Nottingham Forest this season.

His crossing from open play helped create Gabriel Martinelli’s goal too. This was not a coincidence. In the team’s pre-match warm-ups, rather than playing the usual intricate passes inside the box, Nwaneri was whipping crosses to Merino at the back post.

Considering all three goals Arsenal scored against Brentford last season were headers, that could have been a deliberate ploy. Neither Merino nor Martinelli’s goals were headers, but both players were beneficiaries of what can happen when crosses are used to ask questions of the opposition.

A lot has happened between Nwaneri’s last outing at the Gtech Community Stadium and this one. Arsenal have grown into serious title contenders, while Nwaneri has had to mature as a young man and professional footballer. Navigating the growth of the club and talented young individuals is not easy, but in Nwaneri’s case, Arteta has not rushed to reward him with his first Premier League start.

“Part of that development is patience,” the Arsenal manager added. “And managing frustration and expectations because you expect that everything is going to go so fast as the previous things did. That’s not the case. Now we’re building him. He’s already played a lot of minutes for us for the age he’s at and he fully deserves that.

Nwaneri had already made 16 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season, starting three games in the Carabao Cup. On the back of his first league start, he has now played 432 minutes of senior football in 2024-25. That has come after a telling 189 minutes across five matches in pre-season.

With a couple of Saka-less months coming on the right flank, Nwaneri has shown he is more than capable of being trusted by Arteta in various in-game contexts. A difference maker against the team with the joint-best home record in the league (Brentford and Liverpool have won 22 points at home this term), Nwaneri’s latest trip to west London was just as beneficial as his first, if not more so.

Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri in Bukayo Saka’s absence – this is how he’s developed since debut

With Bukayo Saka sidelined due to injury, Arsenal fans may be concerned about who will step up to fill the void left by the talented young winger. However, one player who has shown immense growth and potential in recent months is Ethan Nwaneri.

Since making his debut for the Gunners, Nwaneri has impressed with his pace, skill, and work rate. The 18-year-old Nigerian winger has shown great versatility, being able to play on either flank and even in a more central attacking role.

Nwaneri’s development has been rapid, and he has become an integral part of Arsenal’s youth setup. His performances for the U23 team have been consistently impressive, with his ability to take on defenders and create chances for his teammates standing out.

In addition to his attacking prowess, Nwaneri has also shown a willingness to track back and help out defensively. His work rate and commitment to the team’s cause have not gone unnoticed by his coaches and teammates.

With Saka out of action, Nwaneri has a golden opportunity to prove himself at the senior level. His potential is undeniable, and if given the chance, he could be the player to step up and make a name for himself in the absence of the star winger.

Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri to deliver when called upon, and his development since his debut is a testament to his dedication and talent. Gunners fans should keep an eye on this exciting young talent as he looks to make his mark in the first team.

‘Set piece FC’ strike again just as Arsenal are tempted by the fountain of youth | Arsenal

Never forget where you’re coming from. On the August 2021 night Brentford made their bow as a Premier League team, Mikel Arteta received valuable, indelible lessons on defending and attacking set pieces. Mads Bech Sørensen, these days back at the Bees’ former sister club, Midtjylland, launched the throw-in that led to Christian Nørgaard heading home for 2-0.

By then, Nicolas Jover was by Arteta’s side in the Arsenal dugout, having joined from Brentford via Manchester City. They have learned and developed much together since. Set pieces are no longer the refuge of scoundrels and dinosaurs, and with Jover’s fussy sideline guidance Arsenal have developed into their current hybrid of restart muscle and creative flair. The former has often stood in for the latter. At Brentford , it took until the second half for Arsenal’s flair to arrive, and only after a Jover special had grabbed the lead.

A homecoming win, then, for Arsenal’s breakout star of the season. The now talismanic special teams guru who made his bones at Brentford, a significant destination in Arteta’s own journey of personal development. There were distinct wobbles on their first assignment of 2025, Brentford doing what they do best in unsettling their opposition. David Raya, another Brentford-Arsenal brain drain traveller, was guilty of misreading the angles for Bryan Mbeumo’s opening goal and only just rescued himself from an even more serious error when fumbling Keane Lewis-Potter’s shot.

Has Liverpool’s frontrunning broken Arsenal’s hearts? Not just yet, though just when Manchester City need rewiring, Arne Slot’s remake/remodel of Jürgen Klopp’s team has left Arsenal little margin for error after their stumbles in the first half of the season. Officialdom often takes the blame among the wilder fringe groups of the club’s support when injuries have far more credibility as mitigation. Sickness in the camp had taken its effect here, Kai Havertz’s absence down to seasonal lurgy.

As Arsenal stare down nine games in January, to follow seven in December, the breakdown of Bukayo Saka is their hard-luck story. At least Brentford was negotiated without him. The wisdom of such a young player reaching 250 games is a question against the club’s personnel department. The case of Raheem Sterling, still just 30, currently on Arsenal’s books but reported to be headed back to Chelsea as unwanted goods, is just one example of too much too young. When Saka reappears from an injury that has slowed many a speedster, can he be the same player? Will the twitch fibres recover? Will Arsenal still be in the title hunt when he does return?

To answer one question, in Saka’s stead, Arteta placed yet more trust in flaming youth. Ethan Nwaneri, 17, was making his first Premier League start at the same ground he became the Premier League’s youngest ever player, at 15 years and 181 days in September 2022, the eve of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. He was replacing Arsenal’s fallen king, up against Lewis‑Potter, whose presence at left-back reminded injury crises are not confined to title challengers. Thomas Frank could complain of heavy first-team absences, only Nathan Collins available of a first-choice defence.

Arsenal’s Mikel Merino swings a boot at a loose ball to score from another set piece. Photograph: Steven Paston/PA

As Arsenal dominated possession, Frank’s cut and shut backline needed to stay disciplined, so there was disappointment in the crap 90s football manner of Gabriel Jesus’s equaliser, a pinball begun by Mbeumo taking a risk on the edge of the box. With Martin Ødegaard’s radar off-beam – Brentford’s Mikkel Damsgaard perhaps the brighter of the Scandinavian playmakers – it was left to Jover to find solutions. Whenever a corner was awarded, Arteta vacated his pensive patrols of the technical area, and Jover could line up his desired strategy.

Nwaneri further fulfilled Saka surrogate duties by pinging in a beauty; Mark Flekken was distracted by the trademark blitz and dropped the ball for Mikel Merino to score. Jover had bitten the hand that used to feed him. Do he and Austin MacPhee, Aston Villa’s specialist, another noted fellow of the Brentford/Midtjylland school of free-kicks, corners and second balls, exchange celebratory high-five emojis in the set-piece gurus WhatsApp group? These men of increasingly high profile remain mysterious, enigmatic as their influence grows. “Set piece FC,” sang the travelling Gunners fans. A ninth Premier League goal from corners had dug their team from a hole.

    skip past newsletter promotion

There was soon something else to celebrate, that long-awaited flair, Nwaneri supplying the pass from which Gabriel Martinelli, who had struggled in the Saka position against Ipswich, took the blood from the contest. The teenage prodigy departed with 10 minutes left on the clock, having been fleetingly but decisively influential.

If Arsenal’s chase for a Premier League title remains unfulfilled this May, where might that leave Arteta? He has done his growing up in public, his first senior role a job that would daunt even the most experienced managers. Arsenal’s development season on season will surely grant further opportunities. What Brentford, particularly in the first half, and others this season have shown is that his team have lost plenty of the fluency that took them to Guardiola’s shoulder. Arteta has learned that other approaches are available. The temptation to overexpose the flowering of Nwaneri can be resisted when the Jover effect is still yielding results.

Set piece FC strike again just as Arsenal are tempted by the fountain of youth

Arsenal’s defensive woes continue to haunt them as Set piece FC once again proved to be their Achilles heel in a recent match. Despite showing promising signs of improvement in their overall play, the Gunners were once again undone by a lack of concentration and organization during set pieces.

While Arsenal have been linked with a number of young and talented defenders in the transfer market, it seems that their struggles at the back may not be entirely solved by fresh faces. The club’s vulnerability to set pieces has been a long-standing issue, and one that needs urgent attention if they are to challenge for top honors.

As the team continues to search for solutions, it is clear that they must prioritize defensive solidity and consistency in order to avoid dropping points unnecessarily. While the temptation to invest in young and exciting prospects is strong, Arsenal must not lose sight of the basics of defending if they are to progress.

Set piece FC have once again highlighted the importance of focusing on the fundamentals, and it is clear that Arsenal must address this issue sooner rather than later. Only then can they hope to compete with the best teams in the league and fulfill their ambitions of returning to the top of English football.

Declan Rice comes in for Jurrien Timber, who is suspended, which means we can expect to see Thomas Partey starting at right-back.

Fabian Hurzeler makes three changes to the side that drew with Aston Villa last time out. Pervis Estupinan starts in place of Lewis Dunk, who is not in the matchday squad. The Ecuadorian will start at left-back, with Igor Julio moving inside to centre-back. Elsewhere in the Brighton back four, Joel Veltman comes in for Tariq Lamptey, while Matt O’Riley replaces Julio Enciso in midfield.

    Brighton v Arsenal line-ups

Brighton: Verbruggen; Veltman, Van Hecke, Igor, Estupinan; Baleba, Ayari, O’Riley; Adingra, Pedro, Gruda

Subs: Steele, Lamptey, Webster, March, Enciso, Georginio, Minteh, Moder, Mitoma

Subs: Neto, Zinchenko, Tierney, Kiwior, Lewis-Skelly, Odegaard, Martinelli, Butler-Oyedeji, Kabia

    Early team news

Arsenal right-back Jurrien Timber sits this one out through suspension, and with both Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu sidelined with knee injuries, Thomas Partey seems likely to deputise. One of Declan Rice or Kai Havertz is likely to come back into the side after missing Arsenal’s win over Brentford. Bukayo Saka remains out with a thigh injury, while the lesser-spotted Raheem Sterling is also unavailable through injury.

For Brighton, Ferdi Kadioglu, James Milner, Danny Welbeck, Evan Ferguson, Mats Wieffer and Jack Hinshelwood all remain out, but Adam Webster has been passed fir after recovering from a thigh injury and Pervis Estupinan could return after missing his side’s last game through illness.

    Premier League: Brighton v Arsenal

Without a win in seven games, five of which they’ve drawn, Brighton could do with a statement home win over Arsenal to electro-shock their season back into life before it flatlines.

“Despite the bad results, we have had some really good performances,” said their manager Fabian Hurzeler, who will need his players to front up today if they are to get a good result against today’s visitors, who can close the gap to Liverpool (who have played one game fewer) to three points with a win until tomorrow at least.

Arsenal arrive in Falmer for this evening’s game on the back of three conecutive league wins but anything less than a fourth will be viewed as a poor result, despite the undeniable quality of their opposition. Kick-off at the Amex Stadium is at 5.30pm (GMT) but we’ll have team news and build-up in the meantime.

Brighton vs Arsenal live updates! — By Joe Prince-Wright at the Amex

Team news intriguing as Odegaard drops to the bench

Arsenal have decided to rest Odegaard as he’s on the bench. Merino looks like he’s in the Odegaard role with Jorginho and Rice alongside him in midfield. Trossard in for Martinelli on the left, which makes sense as Arteta continues to rotate.

    Hello from a chilly Amex!

Welcome to a cold Amex Stadium on the South Coast as Brighton host Arsenal in a big game at the top of the table. The Seagulls have picked up some big wins against the ‘big six’ at home this season, but Arsenal look the real deal and are unbeaten in their last 12 games in all competitions. Can Mikel Arteta’s side cut the gap to leaders Liverpool who play tomorrow?

    Brighton lineup

Verbruggen; Veltman, van Hecke, Igor, Esupinan; Ayari, Baleba; Adingra, O’Riley, Gruda; Pedro

    Arsenal lineup

Raya; Partey, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Jorginho, Rice, Merino; Nwaneri, Jesus, Trossard

    Brighton team news, focus

There are so many players Brighton have been without in recent weeks and perhaps that is a reason they’ve struggled for fluidity. Hurzeler’s side are still playing with high energy but they’ve just lacked that extra bit of creativity in recent weeks, as the string of draws prove.

OUT: James Milner (thigh), Evan Ferguson (knock), Ferdi Kadioglu (toe), Danny Welbeck (ankle), Mats Wieffer (knock), Jack Hinshelwood (knee) | QUESTIONABLE: Pervis Estupinan (illness), Diego Gomez (personal)

    Arsenal team news, focus

Nwaneri may start again on the right but if Kai Havertz is available then he could start up top with Gabriel Jesus or Gabriel Martinelli shifting to the right and Leandro Trossard coming in on the other flank to keep things fresh. Declan Rice, Jorginho and Lewis-Skelly could all come in too as Arteta has become much more comfortable with shuffling and rotating his squad. Timber is suspended, so Partey could start at right back.

OUT: Bukayo Saka (hamstring – MORE), Jurrien Timber (suspension), Raheem Sterling (knee), Ben White (knee), Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee)

    Brighton vs Arsenal prediction

This has all of the ingredients to be a thriller. Brighton will give it a real go and cause Arsenal problems, but the Gunners are just finding a way to get it done at the moment and someone will pop up with the key goal. Probably from a set piece. Brighton 2-3 Arsenal.

    Brighton vs Arsenal preview

Fabian Hurzeler’s side have beaten Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham at home already this season, and they drew away at Arsenal earlier in the campaign too. However, they are currently on a seven-game winless run which has included five draws. The latest of those came away at Aston Villa as they fought back to draw 2-2. The Seagulls have lost some of their zip in attack but one of the big boys coming to town usually sees them turn on the style.

Arsenal did exactly that at Brentford on Wednesday as Mikel Arteta’s side recovered supremely from going behind in the first half to win 3-1. Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli both scored to step up in the absence of Bukayo Saka, while teenager Ethan Nwaneri looked at home on his first Premier League start. Arsenal will cut Liverpool’s lead atop the table to three points (Arne Slot’s Liverpool will have two games in-hand) if they win at Brighton.
