  • Art’s Angle: Don’t Cry – Chapelboro.com

Don’t cry, Carolina alumni and fans. It’s only one basketball game — albeit a poorly played one by the Tar Heels. Remember 11 months ago, when they had Armando Bacot and better transfers and clinched the ACC regular season at Cameron Indoor Stadium?

Saturday’s drubbing at Duke was predictable, given the Blue Devils’ decided advantages of depth, superior size and talent this season. The 87-70 final score looks far more respectable than when the Heels were down by 30 points midway through the second half. It was UNC’s ninth Quad 1 loss, which is the most important metric for an invite to the NCAA Tournament.

But if your pride is wounded, Carolina would likely lose to this Duke team nine out of 10 times. Defeats to closer equivalents Michigan State, Florida, Louisville, Stanford, Wake Forest and Pitt are far more the reason for falling short of an at-large bid. Those are/were all Quad 1 and Quad 2 teams when they played UNC.

Carolina may not drop much from its No. 41 NET ranking, since its 10th loss overall and fifth in the ACC was on the road against a favorite to win the national championship. UNC could still qualify for the NCAA Tournament by winning the next eight games — the last six of which are against teams in the lower half of the ACC standings — before Duke comes to Chapel Hill for the regular season finale.

Don’t fault Hubert Davis purely for the result. Yes, there’s been some questionable coaching, but it is only magnified by holes in his rotation that could have been filled with more NIL money that Davis may now be getting thanks to the Bill Belichick barometer. Hubert’s most athletic power forward is on the way. Watch former Tar Heel national champions Theo Pinson and Raymond Felton talk about what has happened to college basketball and their school.

Yes, Davis deserves his share of blame for the slow starts his team has had so often. Until recently, the 54-year Davis was a hardliner from the Dean Smith era of no pay for play. But any promises for discipline rarely come in front of a microphone.

“I told them in the huddle with about four or five minutes to go in the game that I couldn’t be happier with the group than the one that I’m looking at right now,” Davis said after the loss in his fatherly fashion.

Really? Wouldn’t he have been happier if his team wasn’t outscored 33-7 in the guts of the first half? Especially as Duke super frosh Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel were on their way to combining for 43 points on 13 for 25 shooting, 13 rebounds, 12 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks in 73 of the 80 possible minutes?

Let’s admire Duke, which has a far wealthier alumni base and figured to be a big player once the NIL era began without guidelines or guardrails. That is why any mistakes by third-year coach Jon Scheyer are not debated as he continues to sign 5-stars and solid transfers who accept supporting roles, giving the Blue Devils among the most balanced and dangerous rosters in college basketball. Having won 16 straight, they are on a different level right now with those talents and financial investment.

The good news: with so many college athletes turning pro or entering the portal, opponents often face stars like Flagg –the 6-foot-9 and 205-pound phenom from Newport, Maine – for one season before they disappear from the conference or from college basketball entirely. It was Flagg’s third and last three-pointer with under 10 minutes left in the second half that gave Duke a 74-44 lead — and only as both teams played out the long-decided game with less intensity did the Tar Heels show some of their best basketball.

“I was really proud of the fight of our guys in the second half,” Hubert said, another tired line he pulls out when his Tar Heels battle back from early deficits of their own making. “I thought they competed. I thought they played well. And one of the things that I have been proud about this group is it has continued to compete and fight.”

That may have been something Davis’ mentors Smith and Roy Williams said before making them run more sprints during practice the next day. With NIL now controlling college basketball as much as football, coaches can still discipline their players like Tennessee’s Rick Barnes, who pulled one of his transfers from a game recently. “I took him out because he didn’t shoot when he had an open shot,” Barnes said. “I told him shooting is why we pay him. So his butt was on the bench.”

Scheyer’s mentor is Mike Krzyzewski, one of the strictest coaches during his Hall of Fame career — and the protégé can certainly be hard on his players, who often overcome their miscues with great playmaking on both ends of the court.

Davis could be angry over the costly mistakes his team has been making lately. In the last two games, the Tar Heels have given up 41 points off their 28 turnovers. They were a major reason why Duke was able to quickly run up the score and feel confident Carolina would not, realistically, be troubling them with a close game.

Six Tar Heels scored more points in the second half at Cameron than the first, when the score was heading for 45-23. After the break, Ven-Allen Lubin, Ian Jackson, Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble, R.J. Davis and Drake Powell all made nice plays out of a fluid offense by moving the ball better and dribbling less. That was also because Scheyer emptied his bench and called off their trapping, suffocating, changing defenses that had already decided the game. As a good sport, he slowed the tempo down and ran the clock as Carolina “won” the second half 45-40.

ESPN basketball guru Jay Bilas likes to say that the Duke-UNC rivalry “always delivers.” Not this time. It was rotten for the rivalry and huge TV audience that watched early, if not late. And it was bad for the Tar Heels’ NCAA bubble hopes they may be hanging onto for dear life. But, again, it was predictable based on Carolina’s season so far.

UNC doesn’t play again until the home rematch with Pitt on Saturday, and between now and then Davis will decide which “pivots” and “tweaks” he will use, such as the zone he said they practiced for Duke and seemed to be somewhat effective — although any improvement.

“The most important thing I told the guys after the game was just to stay together and stay the course,” Hubert said. “What other choice do you have? I love coaching these kids and I believe in this team. We’ve been together for almost a year now and been to a lot of practices and games and trips. This team is really close.”

Unfortunately, UNC may also be close to missing the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years – unless they can maximize and blend their individual abilities for the greater good. Duke’s team is already doing that, and Saturday’s game was just the latest example.

  • Grammy Awards: Everything to know ahead of the show | Ents & Arts News

It’s the biggest night in music, and the biggest prize is album of the year – and this time around all eyes will be on Beyonce to see if she’ll finally take home the top gong.

Despite being the most Grammy-nominated person in history, it’s an award that has alluded her up to now.

Last year Taylor Swift took home the prize for her album Midnights and is up for it again this year for The Tortured Poets Department.

Ironically, even if Beyonce doesn’t win, she’ll still make Grammy history, as the person with the most nominations in that category without a win.

If Swift bags it, she’ll make history too – beating her own record as the person to have won the category the most times.

Others up for best album are Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Andre 3000 and Jacob Collier.

Here’s a whistle-stop tour of what to expect from the night.

    Where, when and what?

The 67th annual Grammy Awards take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

With a whopping 94 prizes to give out, the night kicks off early with a premiere ceremony at 12.30pm in LA – 8.30pm here in the UK – which gives out the majority of the awards.

But the ones everyone will be talking about are album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist, which are presented later.

The red carpet kicks off at 11pm UK time, and we will be covering all the fashion of the night here on Sky News online.

The main ceremony begins at 1am UK time and lasts three and a half hours.

This year’s awards recognise music released between 16 September 2023 and 30 August 2024.

How will the LA fires affect the night?

It’s natural that the wildfires which have decimated parts of the city, claiming 29 lives, will take the focus of the event.

The Recording Academy has cancelled a swathe of industry events around the show, instead allocating resources to Los Angeles-area wildfire relief and rebuilding efforts.

The Recording Academy and MusiCares also launched the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort with a $1m donation. Currently, they’ve raised and pledged more than $4m in emergency aid to those in the music industry affected by the wildfires.

    Who are the presenters?

Comedian Trevor Noah will host the show for the fifth consecutive time.

Stars presenting awards include Taylor Swift, Red Hot Chilli Peppers bandmembers Anthony Kiedis and Chad Smith, Cardi B, Gloria Estefan, Olivia Rodrigo, Queen Latifah, SZA, Victoria Monet and Will Smith – who coincidentally has a new album out.

    Who will perform?

Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Doechii, RAYE, Sabrina Carpenter, Shakira and Teddy Swims will all perform.

While Stevie Wonder and Janelle Monae will headline a tribute to the late, legendary producer Quincy Jones.

Brad Paisley, Brittany Howard, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Cynthia Erivo, Herbie Hancock, Jacob Collier, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, Sheryl Crow and St. Vincent will also appear.

    Who’s up for an award?

Beyonce leads the Grammy nods with 11, bringing her career total to 99 nominations. That makes her the most nominated artist in Grammy history.

As of 2023, she’s also the most decorated artist, having earned 32 trophies across her career.

Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Charli XCX follow with seven nominations.

Taylor Swift and first-time nominees Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan boast six nominations each.

There are a couple of surprise nods in there too – looking back over five decades. The Beatles are up for two awards – record of the year and best rock performance.

Now and Then, first recorded in the 1970s, was completed by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr last year with the help of AI.

It remains to be seen if Grammy voters will be put off by the tech tweaks, or if nostalgia will prevail.

    Where can I watch it?

You can watch the premiere ceremony, red carpet and main ceremony on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel or the Grammy official website.

  • Sterling K Brown on Black Panther, taping up his basketball shoes and Paradise | Ents & Arts News

Sterling K Brown says being part of Black Panther was a “cultural moment” that allowed him to be “part of history” – and he’d jump at the chance to become part of the Marvel world again.

The 48-year-old actor, who’s currently starring in the mind-bending drama Paradise, told Sky News: “I remember reading that script – they don’t give it to you – you have to read it and then turn it back or your hands burn off or something like that…

“I remember thinking, this is a cultural moment. This is so big, not only for black America but for black people across the globe to see themselves front and centre in the largest, most zeitgeisty pop cultural machine in the world right now, the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe].

(L-R): Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Danai Gurira as Okoye in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Pic: Marvel Studios

The superhero movie won three Oscars – Marvel’s first ever Academy Awards – including a win for costume design and best production design, the first in both categories for women of colour.

Brown goes on: I just want to be a part of history. It was history. It was awesome.”

The Missouri-born star’s career trajectory has been impressive, from “living beneath the poverty line” to being nominated for an Oscar, he’s always been single-minded in his pursuit of acting.

He explains: “I didn’t have a hard knock life. We grew up in a house. My mom was a schoolteacher. My dad was a grocery clerk. All our needs were met.

“But I would tape my basketball shoes up if the sole came apart because that fixed them. And my mom got mad at me one time, she’s like, ‘You know, we can buy you shoes?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but I fixed them. What’s the big deal?’”

He says making his living through his craft was always his focus, adding, “I know that’s a luxury that’s not afforded to a lot of people. The fact that it’s gone my way, I’m incredibly thankful for.”

A three-time Emmy winner, The People V O J Simpson: American Crime Story saw him gain public attention, followed by a season in The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the multi-award-winning This Is Us.

    ‘I’ve got good taste’

When his role in American Fiction earned him an Oscar nomination, he insists he didn’t see it coming, saying: “I just knew it was a great story, a great script, and I wanted to be a part of it.”

He goes on: “They’re all sort of game-changers. People will give me credit. I’ll take credit for having good taste, but you never know when lightning is going to strike, right?”

A fatalist, he says: “I leave it in the hands of the universe and just say, ‘If you want me to step here, I’ll step there and whatever happens, happens’.”

Now he’s leading the cast of Disney+ drama Paradise, playing Agent Xavier Collins, a man charged with protecting a second-term president – played by James Marsden – in a serene community of high-net-worth individuals.

Brown admits the role came with obligations: “There is a different level of responsibility when you’re one on the call sheet. I think people do look to you to help set the tone of what the environment is going to be like, and I don’t mind that.”

    Pic: Disney+
    Image:

The brainchild of Dan Fogelman, best known for his work on This Is Us and Only Murders In The Building, Paradise is a murder mystery with something much bigger underneath.

    ‘Billionaires on camera’

Impossible to elaborate on further without giving away spoilers, it’s enough to say the first episode throws up a twist few will see coming.

Despite various parallels with the current political climate, Fogelman says he came up with the idea over a decade ago, but concedes the timing is “certainly unusual”.

Fogelman tells Sky News: “We’re openly seeing billionaires on camera having a big hand in government. And while money and wealth have always been a factor in things behind the scenes, it’s very out front and centre right now in a way that the show openly discusses [and] things about the environment and climate change.”

Brown too says the themes are prescient: “The world is unpredictable and a little bit nutty and a lot of people are on edge as to what is next. I don’t know if it’s across the world. I definitely know that it’s in the United States for certain.

“I think the show in a very strange way, is sort of asking the same questions like, ‘All right, we’re in new territory right now. I have no idea what happens next. I’m a little scared about that.’”

He goes on: “People are going to draw all sorts of conclusions and inferences and comparisons. I will leave them to draw whatever they wish because if I was an audience member, I would too.”

The first three episodes of Paradise are available on Disney+ now, with new episodes dropping each Tuesday.

Sterling K Brown on Black Panther, Taping Up His Basketball Shoes, and Paradise

In a recent interview, award-winning actor Sterling K Brown opened up about his experience working on the groundbreaking film Black Panther. Brown, who played N’Jobu in the hit Marvel movie, revealed that being a part of the project was a dream come true for him.

“I’ve been a fan of the Black Panther comics for as long as I can remember, so to be able to step into that world and bring a character to life was truly surreal,” Brown said. “I knew from the moment I read the script that this film was going to be something special, and I’m so grateful to have been a part of it.”

But Brown’s talents don’t stop at acting – he’s also an avid basketball player, and he shared a hilarious story about taping up his shoes before hitting the court.

“I take my basketball games very seriously, so I always make sure my shoes are taped up just right before I step onto the court,” Brown laughed. “It’s a little superstition of mine, but hey, whatever works, right?”

In addition to his acting and basketball skills, Brown also dished on his idea of paradise. For the This Is Us star, paradise is all about good food, good company, and good music.

“Paradise for me is sitting around a table with my loved ones, eating a delicious meal, and listening to some classic soul music,” Brown explained. “It’s those simple moments of connection and joy that truly make life worth living.”

With his talent, charm, and infectious personality, Sterling K Brown continues to captivate audiences both on and off the screen. And with his upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated film Paradise Lost, it’s clear that this star is just getting started.

  • Love Island star Jack Fincham released on bail after being jailed for dog attack | Ents & Arts News

Love Island winner Jack Fincham has been released on bail pending an appeal – hours after being jailed for his cane corso dog attacking a man while he was running.

The 32-year-old had pleaded guilty at Southend Magistrates’ Court to two counts of being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog, with one of the incidents causing injury.

As well as being jailed for six weeks, he was ordered to pay £3,680 in total, including a £2,000 contribution to kennelling costs, a fine of £961 and £200 compensation.

But after being sentenced at the court on Wednesday, it emerged he had successfully lodged an appeal and had been granted conditional bail.

Fincham’s solicitor told Sky News District Judge Williams heard the bail application in open court.

After the sentence was announced, Fincham gave a thumbs up as he was led to the cells, as a woman in the public gallery cried.

The court heard his dog Elvis bit a runner in his home town of Swanley, Kent, in September 2022.

Fincham was going to be cautioned and take part in a responsible dog ownership course after the man accepted an apology, said prosecutor Erin Peck. Conditions were made including that his dog must be muzzled, she added.

However, in June last year, there was a second incident in Grays, Essex, when the dog was out of control. Fincham was later charged.

Presiding magistrate Anne Wade, sentencing, originally said Fincham was subject to a suspended sentence order at the time of the incident in Swanley. This was for 12 weeks custody, suspended for 18 months, for an unrelated driving matter.

Ms Wade said this order would be activated in part and issued the six-week prison sentence.

“The dog was in a public place not abiding by the conditions to be muzzled and kept on a lead,” she said.

Richard Cooper, representing Fincham, said the defendant had “no savings” to pay the £3,680.

Ms Wade said he could pay in instalments, initially at £400 per month.

She made an order that the dog must be muzzled in public places, be kept on a lead, and not be left alone with anyone under the age of 16.

Fincham rose to fame after winning the fourth series of Love Island with his then-girlfriend Dani Dyer in 2018. The pair were favourites throughout the series after being “coupled up” from the start.

They announced their break-up six months after leaving the show’s villa in Majorca.

Love Island star Jack Fincham released on bail after being jailed for dog attack

Former Love Island contestant Jack Fincham found himself in legal trouble after his dog was involved in an attack on another animal. The reality TV star was reportedly arrested and jailed for the incident, but has since been released on bail.

The incident occurred when Fincham’s dog allegedly attacked a smaller dog while out for a walk. The owner of the other dog claimed that Fincham’s pet was not on a leash and showed signs of aggression towards their dog.

Fincham has since issued a statement expressing his regret over the incident and apologizing to the owner of the other dog. He has also vowed to take responsibility for his pet’s actions and ensure that measures are taken to prevent any future incidents.

Fans of the Love Island star have shown their support for him during this difficult time, with many expressing their hope that the situation can be resolved amicably. As of now, Fincham is awaiting further legal proceedings and has been advised to keep a low profile until the matter is resolved.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
