  • England misery complete as Australia complete Women’s Ashes whitewash | Women’s Ashes

“See the Ashes ignite” was the experience Cricket Australia promised fans in an attempt to persuade them to turn up to watch this series. It was a tagline that promised a hard-fought, thrilling contest. Instead, locals have had the opportunity over the past three weeks to watch England’s batting, fielding abilities and reputation go up in smoke.

The culmination was no more than England deserved: utter annihilation in front of a crowd of more than 10,000 in Melbourne, as Australia sealed victory in the Test by an innings and 122 runs with a day to spare to claim the first whitewash of the multi-format era. Thus ends the worst overseas tour by England Women in living memory.

England had actually shown some fight in the first session of the day. Beth Mooney successfully brought up her hundred, but England then induced an Australian collapse of five wickets for nine runs, led by a wily Sophie Ecclestone, who finished with five for 143 – making England’s decision to field only one frontline spinner look very foolish indeed.

The signwriter at the MCG had been kept busy before play started on Saturday adding Annabel Sutherland’s name to the honours board after her history-making century on the second day: on Sunday he will have to get up his ladder again multiple times.

But England were still the small matter of 270 behind on first innings and they faced a mammoth task – bat for four and a half sessions, and save the Test. In theory, they had the personnel to do so. Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont both have the technique and temperament to build Test innings – Beaumont hit a double hundred at Trent Bridge in 2023, while Knight has two Ashes 150s – and they patiently constructed a partnership of 73 for the second wicket.

But then came the duo of Alana King and Ash Gardner, bowling in tandem either side of the dinner break. Gardner struck first: Knight had been solid for two hours, but the intense psychological pressure of knowing that her future as England captain might be at stake eventually told and she sent up a tame catch to Phoebe Litchfield at short leg.

Then King did exactly what she has done all series, and produced a spell of masterful leg-spin. Nat Sciver-Brunt was trapped leg-before by King’s slider, Sophia Dunkley was bowled by a brilliant leg-break, then Beaumont played on three runs short of a half-century and England were staring down the barrel. Just over a year ago, in Mumbai, England were humiliated by India in a Test because they couldn’t work out how to play spin. Nothing has changed.

Indeed, JonBall – the all-guns-blazing approach to batting advocated by their coach Jon Lewis – has arguably made the problems worse, encouraging aggression even when the match situation, as it did on Saturday, calls for defence. On this occasion, England lost their last nine wickets for 69 runs.

The only remaining question was whether it would be King or Gardner who would trouble the MCG’s signwriter for a fourth time this Test. Laurens Filer and Bell kept everyone guessing for 75 balls – the crowd roaring as a succession of possible chances dropped safe – but it was King who eventually secured the five-for which she had been denied first time around, when Filer chipped up a catch to mid-on.

The day had begun with Mooney, stranded on 98 not out overnight, nervously facing down five balls from Ecclestone. Mooney was beaten twice and tried for a nonexistent single before carving the sixth out past point to score the two runs required to bring up her century.

Ecclestone’s response was to upend expectations by engineering a much hastier than expected end to the Australian innings. Even more surprisingly, England – after spending noticeably longer than usual out on the outfield at the G before play doing fielding drills – actually held on to some catches.

Mooney was bowled playing down the wrong line to Filer, but Tahlia McGrath and Kim Garth were both out caught. As was Ellyse Perry, who had not been expected to bat (and indeed did not take to the field), and was greeted with thunderous applause when she finally walked out to the middle at No 10. But she faced just seven balls before sending up a limp return catch to Ecclestone as Australia extended their overnight lead by just 18 runs.

England could finally claim to have won a session – but it was all too little, too late. The only comfort on offer is that the blessed oblivion of the plane home awaits.

England’s misery was complete as Australia completed a Women’s Ashes whitewash, dominating the series and leaving their rivals in disarray. The Australian team showcased their dominance and skill throughout the series, leaving the England team struggling to keep up.

From the opening match to the final game, Australia showed why they are the top-ranked team in women’s cricket. Their all-round performance was simply too much for England to handle, with their bowlers consistently picking up wickets and their batters scoring runs at will.

For England, it was a series to forget. Despite showing glimpses of promise at times, they were unable to string together a consistent performance and were ultimately outclassed by their Australian counterparts.

As the series came to a close, Australia celebrated their whitewash victory while England were left to ponder what went wrong. It was a stark reminder of the gap between the two teams and a clear indication of the work that lies ahead for England to catch up to the dominant Australian side.

  • Women’s Ashes 2024/25, AUS-W vs ENG-W Only Test Match Report, January 30 – February 01, 2025

    Australia 440 (Sutherland 163, Mooney 106, Ecclestone 5-143) beat England 170 (Sciver-Brunt 51, King 4-45) & 148 (Beaumont 47, King 5-53, Gardner 4-39) by an innings and 122 runs

These will forever be known as Alana King‘s Ashes. Australia’s legspinner delivered another spellbinding performance at the MCG to ensure England were whitewashed 16 points to nil for the first time in the multi-format era after an innings and 122 rout inside three days.

King took her maiden Test five-wicket haul, nine for the match and 23 for the series at a 11.17 to equal Ash Gardner’s record haul of 23 scalps in the 2023 Ashes and finish as Player of the Series.

Gardner took 4 for 39 to cap a wonderful series. The spin duo bowled 47.4 overs together unchanged to claim the last nine wickets of the match and allow England to start their recriminations a day early.

It was a day of celebration for Australia with Beth Mooney earlier becoming just the fourth female and the first Australian to score international centuries in all three formats, making 106 as the hosts piled up 440 and a first innings lead of 270, their second-highest such lead in a women’s Test. Annabel Sutherland was Player of the Match for her 163.

Despite taking four wickets in the first innings, and having multiple chances missed, captain Alyssa Healy oddly waited 22 overs in England’s second innings before throwing King the ball. England had shown some resilience with Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight compiling a half-century stand and looking relatively untroubled after Maia Bouchier had her middle stump flattened by Darcie Brown in the first over to end a miserable tour.

But when King and Gardner were finally locked in tandem, they created carnage just as they had done throughout the ODI series. With England 79 for 1, Knight bunted a catch to short leg where Phoebe Litchfield held her second sharp close catch of the match.

King then bamboozled Nat Sciver-Brunt for the second time in the match and the fourth time in the series. Sciver-Brunt had spoken after her first innings half-century about wanting to play King off the back foot despite twice being bowled playing back, including on day one for 51.

She changed tack in the second, instead pushing forward at every opportunity and sweeping anything pitching outside leg. King forced a leading edge that landed just wide of silly mid-off and then fizzed another past the outside edge, but Sciver-Brunt did well to hold the line.

With that set-up, she played for turn on the front foot trying to defend and King got one to skid into her front pad and trap her lbw. Sciver-Brunt took a review with her to underscore how deceived she was.

King then delivered the ball of the series to Sophia Dunkley. She drifted one outside leg at 72.1kph, ala Shane Warne to Mike Gatting, it dipped and pitched and spun sharply past Dunkley’s forward defence and crashed into the top of off. There was an audible gasp from the 11,804 in attendance when the replay came up on the big screens. It meant Dunkley was in no doubt as to what had happened, unlike Gatting.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge avoided falling to King for a fourth time as Sciver-Brunt, instead meekly sweeping Gardner straight to short fine.

King’s third and fourth scalps were from arguably her two worst balls. Beaumont dragged on from a non-committal jab at a shorter legbreak wide of off for 47.

Ryana MacDonald-Gay had been strangely upbeat in the press conference on the second night, but her mood would surely have shifted after hitting a rank full toss from King straight to deep midwicket.

In the midst of those two dismissals, Mooney took an excellent catch off Gardner via a thick deflection from Amy Jones’ outside edge.
Sophie Ecclestone’s bizarre Test match concluded when she top-edged a long-hop from Gardner to midwicket.

With both spinners on four wickets each, the race to join Peggy Antonio on Australia’s bowling honours board at the MCG was comical as skied balls and edges somehow evaded fielders hands. Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer faced the most balls ever for a 10th wicket pair in women’s Tests before Filer finally chipped one to catching mid-on.

Earlier, Mooney joined Sutherland on the MCG honours board as the second century maker in the Australia’s innings.

Having spent the night unbeaten on 98, Mooney looked a bundle of nerves through the first five balls of the day. Ecclestone beat her twice and she nearly caused a mix-up trying to invent a non-existent single. But off the last ball of the over she breathed a huge sigh of relief as Ecclestone dropped short to allow her to punch two off the back foot through point and raise her arms aloft.

Thereafter, England finally had a decent hour as they held their catches to reward their bowlers. Ecclestone gave Tahlia McGrath nothing to hit before she skipped out to the wrong line and dragged a catch to mid-on.

Filer then cranked up the pace despite having delivered 21 overs on day two. She had Kim Garth caught behind for a third-ball duck and could have easily had Mooney lbw from around the wicket in the next over. Mooney was initially given not out and DRS showed it was umpire’s call on impact in line with off but it was crashing into middle.

Mooney’s luck continued five balls later when she gloved down the legside but Amy Jones caught it while part of the ball brushed the ground as it entered her gloves. Filer was finally rewarded when she clattered Mooney’s off stump with the left-hander playing down the wrong line.

In between, Ecclestone pinned King lbw for 3 which brought Ellyse Perry to the crease at No.10 for the first time in her career. It was odd that Perry was fit to bat but came in behind Garth and King. But the moment she ran her first runs, a two to wide long-off, it was clear she was in a lot of discomfort with her corked left hip. She chipped a return catch back to Ecclestone to end the innings and unjustly dent her extraordinary Test average.

Australia had bizarrely lost 5 for 9 despite their extraordinary batting depth and handed Ecclestone her third Test five-wicket haul, albeit her most expensive ahead of the 5 for 129 she took in the last Ashes Test in Nottingham.

The highly anticipated Women’s Ashes 2024/25 Only Test Match between Australia and England took place from January 30 to February 1, 2025, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The match was filled with thrilling moments, exceptional performances, and fierce competition between the two cricketing powerhouses.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, setting a challenging target for England with their strong batting lineup. Led by captain Meg Lanning, who scored a brilliant century, Australia posted a formidable total of 350 runs in their first innings. Ellyse Perry also made a significant contribution with a half-century, showcasing her all-round skills.

In response, England’s batting lineup struggled against Australia’s formidable bowling attack, with Ellyse Perry and Megan Schutt wreaking havoc. Despite a valiant effort from Sarah Taylor, who top-scored with a gritty half-century, England was bowled out for 250 runs in their first innings, conceding a significant lead to Australia.

Australia continued their dominance in the match, with their bowlers continuing to trouble the English batsmen in the second innings. Ellyse Perry once again starred with the ball, picking up crucial wickets and restricting England’s scoring opportunities. Despite some resistance from the lower order, England was bowled out for 200 runs in their second innings, setting Australia a target of 101 runs to win the match.

In their chase, Australia’s batters chased down the target comfortably, with Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy guiding them to victory with some elegant strokeplay. Australia reached the target in just 20 overs, securing a comprehensive win in the Only Test Match and taking an early lead in the Women’s Ashes series.

Overall, it was a thrilling and competitive match that showcased the talent and skill of both teams. Australia’s dominant performance in all facets of the game earned them a well-deserved victory, setting the stage for an exciting series ahead. The Women’s Ashes 2024/25 promises to be a closely contested battle between two formidable teams, and fans can look forward to more exciting cricket in the coming matches.

  • Women’s Ashes 2025: England suffer humiliating innings defeat and lose series 16-0

England slumped to an embarrassing defeat by an innings and 122 runs in the one-off Test in Melbourne, handing Australia a 16-0 clean sweep in the Women’s Ashes.

Australia were bowled out for 440 in their first innings after England impressed to take the last five wickets for nine runs in the first session, but still faced a deficit of 270.

Leg-spinner Alana King then ripped through England’s batting once more with 5-53 as the visitors were skittled for 148, helping Australia wrap up yet another dominant win with a day to spare.

It is the first time any team has won the multi-format Ashes 16-0 and has placed enormous pressure upon captain Heather Knight and coach Jon Lewis.

After a tortuous day two spent entirely in the field, with seven catches dropped, England responded positively as Sophie Ecclestone finished with 5-143 after Beth Mooney converted her overnight 98 to become the first Australian woman to score a century in all three formats.

Opener Maia Bouchier’s dismal tour continued as she was bowled by Darcie Brown for one in the first over of England’s reply, but Knight and Tammy Beaumont’s gritty stand of 73 showed much-needed signs of fight.

The introduction of spin – England’s constant nemesis throughout the series – triggered a woeful collapse of eight wickets for 48 runs to end any hopes of them finishing the series with pride.

Knight was caught at short leg for 32 off Ash Gardner, King pinned Nat Sciver-Brunt lbw for 18 before bowling Sophia Dunkley with a sensational fizzing leg-break, and Danni Wyatt-Hodge fell softly by sweeping Gardner straight to short fine leg for two.

Ecclestone withstood 50 balls for her 18 until she was bounced out by Gardner, and after a tantalising passage of play of 11 overs with both spinners on four wickets and one wicket remaining, King had Lauren Filer caught for 14 to complete a memorable five-wicket haul.

The Women’s Ashes 2025 series has come to a devastating end for England, as they suffered a humiliating innings defeat in the final test match, resulting in a 16-0 series loss to Australia.

Despite putting up a valiant effort throughout the series, England just couldn’t match the dominance of the Australian team. The final test match saw England bowled out for a paltry total, with Australia easily chasing down the target to win by an innings and seal the series whitewash.

It was a tough pill to swallow for the England team and their supporters, who had high hopes coming into the series. The Australian team, on the other hand, showed their class and proved why they are the reigning champions of women’s cricket.

The Women’s Ashes 2025 series will go down in history as a one-sided affair, but England will no doubt be looking to bounce back and reclaim the trophy in the future. Congratulations to Australia on their dominant performance and well-deserved victory.

POLICE probing a funeral home where 35 bodies and human ashes were recovered have submitted a file to prosecutors.

Officers suspect relatives were charged for cremations that never took place.

Robert Bush, 47, of Hull-based Legacy Funeral Directors was arrested last March on suspicion of fraud and prevention of a lawful burial.

The file of 13,000 exhibits, compiled in the ten months since, was handed to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Specialists will now decide whether or not to bring charges.

Humberside Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin described it as a “significant development”.

In July a woman, 54, was arrested on suspicion of money laundering.

She and Mr Bush remain on conditional bail.

A woman held in March faces no further action.

Julie Dunk, of the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management, said: “Anyone can set up as a funeral director with no training.

It’s time to have another look at this with perhaps a system of licensing and inspections.”

The authorities are currently investigating a funeral home where 35 bodies and human ashes were recovered. The disturbing discovery has raised serious concerns about the practices of the funeral home and has prompted a thorough investigation by law enforcement officials.

The bodies and ashes were found in various states of decomposition, leading to speculation about how long they had been stored at the funeral home. The condition of the remains has added to the urgency of the investigation, as authorities work to determine the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding their storage.

The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement officials working diligently to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to prosecutors for review and potential charges.

This shocking discovery has sent shockwaves through the community and has raised important questions about the regulation and oversight of funeral homes. The authorities are committed to holding those responsible for any wrongdoing accountable and ensuring that justice is served for the deceased and their families.
