How Nottingham Forest’s astonishing, explosive football has poked tactical snobs in the eye – and why Nuno’s outliers should be praised for bringing brilliant chaos to the Premier League, writes RIATH AL-SAMARRAI
It was hardly a bouncer off his long run, but Arne Slot did find a bit of spin. His comments came on Tuesday night, after one of the most breathless halves of the season, when Liverpool left Nottingham Forest with a point and Slot floated a suggestion that one side fancied a draw more than the other.
Among some healthy praise for the team he faced, this is what he said: ‘There was also a lot of moments where it took a while before the play restarted.’
When he was asked to elaborate, Liverpool’s manager indulged: ‘You want as much playing time as you can, but a team that’s happy with the current result wants less playing time as they possibly can.’
Nothing excessively moany there, but he was searching for a little turn off the wicket. A gentle nudge at perceptions, perhaps.
And he would have had a few statistics in his corner, if he felt inclined to use them – 23 shots to six in Liverpool’s favour, 9-0 on corners, 71 per cent of the ball and there was a tedium about the wait for Elliot Anderson to recover from a brush with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s shoulder. In the digits, a 1-1 draw might not have looked like much of a return for Slot, after all.
But I’d hope we know Forest a bit better than that by now.
Nottingham Forest continued their stunning season with a 1-1 draw against Liverpool this week
After the game, Reds boss Arne Slot claimed that Forest were happy to settle for a draw
But, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are playing an astonishing and explosive brand of football
The idea they were resting on what they had doesn’t stand up to a review of the tape or any other memory from this season – it doesn’t have legs. But Forest do. They absorbed kitchen sinks with their faces, hacked clearances, slapped Matz Sels’s back so much his discs must have splintered, and still Nuno Espirito Santo’s team stormed their way up the other end of the pitch. Repeatedly.
And that’s the key here – they attacked. They went in waves. At speed. Almost always on the counter and in levels of directness that contenders simply do not go for these days.
It’s all there in the footage, especially from that period between the 66th minute and 97th, when it was level. Liverpool’s chances were better, more frequent, and how magnificent it is to watch them in full flight.
But there were two in this dance, so let’s return to the idea Forest were clock-watching by reviewing what followed immediately after one of Sels’s many saves from Diogo Jota.
Curtis Jones has gathered the loose ball, edge of the Forest area, and that’s where he’s tackled by Nicolas Dominguez. It’s the trigger for this side’s forte, because nine seconds later, the game has shifted 80 yards up the field. The ball has taken a quick road to get there – one pass is drilled from Gibbs-White to Callum Hudson-Odoi and another goes the other way back to Gibbs-White, nine touches in all, three men. Suddenly Liverpool are on their heels before the move breaks down in the six-yard box.
Within minutes the same combination did it all again, 10 seconds from one area to the other, 10 touches, right-to-left-to-right. Two more minutes on and there they are once more, this time because Hudson-Odoi has intercepted an attack 18 yards from his goal line and set Anthony Elanga loose on a chase. Fewer touches this time, even quicker.
Again, there’s no finish, because that Liverpool defence is worthy of a title, but nor was there a rush to get the ball to the corner flag. It was end to end to end to end, or ‘chaos’, as Steve McManaman shouted in the excitement of his commentary. And chaos is about right. Brilliant, unconventional chaos.
Now what we didn’t see was Pep Guardiola’s football. And that’s a great kind of football indeed. A football that spawned 1,000 imitators and 100 sideways passes per game. The sort of football built on possession and patience and multi-faceted excellence, all eyes scanning for routes to a cut-back from the byline. That can sometimes morph into a football’s take on Andy Dufresne chipping away at the cell wall for years with a rock hammer.
Nuno’s team storm their way up the other end of the pitch repeatedly throughout matches
They also have a superb goalkeeper in Matz Sels who is enjoying the best season of his career
In attack, 33-year-old Chris Wood has been prolific, scoring 13 Premier League goals
But that isn’t Forest. They use dynamite.
Their football puts no onus on pressing in prescribed zones. Their way relies on choreography and precision timing, no less than Guardiola’s does, but if Nuno was writing this column it would be two paragraphs long. It might be better for it.
It is the football of Hudson-Odoi and Gibbs-White, reimagined as a pair of double-barrel shotguns, Murillo as a wall, Sels moving ever onwards from his life as fourth-choice keeper at Newcastle. It is Elliot Anderson as the all-action hero, 33-year-old Chris Wood feeding off 70-yard punts from Sels and one-touch balls from midfield. One shot, one kill. It is Nikola Milenkovic heading, blocking, tackling and little beyond his hinterland of throw-back qualities. For £12m, Forest robbed Fiorentina blind in getting him.
As a collective, they have been astonishing to watch these past few months and I’ve rarely enjoyed a game so much as I did on Tuesday.
That is about the beauty of differences. The beauty of different styles, different approaches, different ways to defend and attack. It’s why I’d hope above hope for Ange Postecoglou’s preservation at Tottenham, but his football doesn’t work like Nuno’s football.
There have been two thoughts attached to Forest’s climb this season. One is the mind-boggling nature of where they are, compared to what they are meant to be in our ecosystem. And the other is the how. How they have built a team on unfancied talents and how they play, using a directness that has no regular place of business in the top three.
I tend to loathe discussions that break football down into a statistical examination. But some are startling, such as the possession figures across the eight years since Guardiola arrived in the Premier League.
The topic of his influence has been discussed at great length elsewhere, as has the upshot that everyone wants a bit of Pep in their play now. Slot does, so too Mikel Arteta, Enzo Maresca, Graham Potter and the coach whose team beat my daughter’s side in the Under 11s last week.
Forest might not press teams, but at the back their work-rate and desire is relentless
They play differently to the way Pep Guardiola teams do, but that is the beauty of differences
Done right, it is sublime. And it is equally well-observed that too much of a great thing can make life a bit samey. But there is nothing samey in the recent past to the how of Nottingham Forest.
Opta provided me with a few data points this week that show only 18 teams since 2016 have gone through a season with an average of 40 per cent possession or less per game. Seven of them went down and none got higher than 10th. Allowing the other team to come at you is usually a symptom of limitations.
But then there’s Nuno’s Forest, the outlier. Not pressing, rarely going above 300 passes per game, 39 per cent possession on average. They are a difference we never realised we wanted to see.
They are making us think of possibilities that surely won’t come to fruition, of Leicester City, but at the very least Forest are plucking a twig and shoving it in the eye of tactical snobs everywhere.
I wouldn’t ever put Slot in that bracket, but what he saw as killing time would be better appreciated as a side who need an awful lot less to cause fabulous explosions.
Can Chelsea keep B-team stars happy?
There was no surprise that Chelsea slaughtered Morecambe last weekend – they have an expensive B team to handle the lesser challenges of a busy season.
It’s part of the strategy. But how sustainable is it to keep players happy if they know progress will have limited rewards?
Christopher Nkunku scored in that game, giving him 13 for the season, mostly against minnows in the Conference League, and none of those strikes have been followed by a start in the next Premier League fixture.
Enzo Maresca may struggle to keep B-team stars Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku happy
Joao Felix is in a similar boat, with six goals in the cups, including two screamers against Morecambe, but Enzo Maresca didn’t see the merit in unleashing his confidence against Bournemouth on Tuesday.
He was on the bench again, as he has been after all his scoring appearances. For him and Nkunku, the reason is Cole Palmer. Tough one, that.
But Nkunku is open to leaving this month and Felix’s frustrations have occasionally appeared near the surface.
All well and good having a deep squad but no one wants to feed off low-hanging fruit forever.
Fury sceptics give me hope
Tyson Fury retired this week. No one in boxing believed him. There might be hope for the sport yet.
Nottingham Forest and Nuno’s Outliers: Embracing Brilliant Chaos in the Premier LeagueIn a season where tactical nuances and possession-based football have dominated the headlines, Nottingham Forest’s astonishing, explosive style of play has caught the eye of many football fans. Led by their enigmatic manager, Nuno, the team’s fearless approach on the pitch has poked the proverbial eye of tactical snobs who have long championed conservative, possession-based football.
While some may argue that Nottingham Forest’s style of play lacks structure and discipline, there is no denying the sheer excitement and unpredictability that they bring to the Premier League. Nuno’s outliers have shown that sometimes, it is the teams that dare to be different that leave a lasting impact on the game.
In a league where conformity and adherence to traditional tactics often reign supreme, Nuno’s outliers should be praised for their willingness to embrace chaos and bring a sense of unpredictability to the Premier League. In a world where football is often over-analyzed and dissected, Nottingham Forest’s explosive brand of football serves as a refreshing reminder that sometimes, it is the teams that march to the beat of their own drum that truly leave a mark on the beautiful game.
So, as we witness Nottingham Forest’s audacious style of play continue to dazzle and entertain fans, let us not forget to celebrate the brilliance of Nuno’s outliers and the chaos they bring to the Premier League. In a world where conformity often reigns supreme, it is teams like Nottingham Forest that remind us of the beauty and excitement that comes with embracing the unexpected.

Outkick founder Clay Travis did not hold back on Ryan Clark after the ESPN analyst claimed that Lamar Jackson deserves the NFL MVP award over Josh Allen as he has ‘evolutionized’ what it means to be a black quarterback.
On Friday, the panel on ESPN’s marquee show First Take discussed the MVP race where Clark praised Jackson for surpassing Michael Vick for the most rushing yards by a quarterback.
However, Outkick’s Bobby Burack wrote about how Clark claimed the Ravens star changed the position while being the ‘most underappreciated QB in the NFL” as a panel of black analysts nodded along.
Reposting their story on X, Travis unloaded on Clark for his approach to the MVP debate.
‘Ryan Clark is basically Carlton without the killer dance moves or likability,’ he said. ‘He’s desperately insecure and uses race as a shield to mask his own horrible insecurities. It’s honestly sad to see.’
‘His bosses are mostly white dudes and terrified of being called racist for firing him so they keep him employed even though he isn’t very talented and provides nothing of any particular value,’ Travis continued.
Clay Travis accused ESPN NFL analyst Ryan Clark of using race to ‘mask his insecurities’
Travis went on an online attack on Clark after his takes on the NFL MVP race on Friday morning
‘Was there a time when race impacted your success negatively in America? Yes. Was Ryan Clark an adult for any of those times? No. Now he trades on the legacy of racism to stay employed,’ he added. ‘Again, sad to see. ESPN should be better than this. Hell, sports should.’
The two-time MVP has the upper hand on Allen in most statistics this season. Jackson has more passing yards (3,955-3,549), passing touchdowns (39-26), and rushing yards (852-514).
While the Buffalo Bills quarterback only has the higher number in rushing touchdowns, 11-4, ESPN Bet has Allen favored to win the award at -225.
Aside from his previous takes, Clark also alluded to Steve Nash winning two NBA MVPs when ‘Kobe Bryant was the best player in the league.’
Travis was not the only sports media personality who blasted Clark and ESPN after Friday’s First Take.
After Burack compared the Jackson-Allen debate to the Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark conversations earlier this year, Jason Whitlock chimed in with an NBA comparison.
‘You forgot Jokic vs Embiid,’ he said. ‘Not sure if the convos would go much different if you added color. They’re all afraid of being labeled sellouts or racist on social media.
‘You rig the convos with a weak (least informed, least credible person on the panel) host who lives in fear of social media backlash and then you let nature (social media matrix) control the convo,’ Whitlock continued. ‘You can’t have a rugged conversation when the host believes tweets and posts break bones.’ m
Clay Travis, controversial sports commentator and founder of Outkick, has launched a scathing attack on former NFL player and ESPN analyst Ryan Clark, accusing him of using his race “to mask his insecurities.”In a series of tweets, Travis claimed that Clark, who is black, frequently plays the race card in discussions about sports and social issues as a way to deflect criticism and avoid addressing his own shortcomings.
Travis wrote, “Ryan Clark loves to use his race to deflect from the fact that he’s just not that good at his job. Instead of owning up to his mistakes or shortcomings, he plays the victim and hides behind his race. It’s a sad and pathetic tactic.”
The accusations have sparked outrage among fans and fellow media personalities, with many condemning Travis for his insensitive and inflammatory remarks.
Clark has not yet responded to Travis’ allegations, but it is clear that this feud is far from over. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.

Astonishing words of glamorous teacher’s husband after dad of underage boy she’d been raping confronted him
A husband tried to play down his glamorous teacher wife’s rapes of a 13 year-old student when confronted by the boy’s incandescent father.
Brittany Zamora’s spouse Daniel said ‘God preaches forgiveness man,’ to the outraged dad, named only as John, after John called Zamora over the phone and branded her a ‘f**king monster,’ according to new footage obtained by EWU Bodycam.
Zamora was arrested in March 2018 aged 27 for the shocking crimes at Las Brisas Academy, with newly-unearthed footage depicting her trembling voice as she was confronted by her victim’s dad.
The pervert teacher, now 33 and 5 years into a 20 year sentence, had a surprise ally in her husband after being confronted over the multiple rapes, which took place as another child stood as watchman.
When the phone was passed to Daniel, the victim’s father, identified o called Brittany a ‘f***ing monster’ and suggested he leave her, but Daniel stayed by her side.
Daniel’s plea to John to forgive Brittany fell on deaf ears, with John heard branding him a ‘stupid motherf*****.’
The father made it clear that he would ‘not settle outside of court’ as both Zamora and Daniel tried to convince him to meet up with them to talk about her relationship with his son.
‘Listen to me, I am not gonna settle outside of court. There’s not enough money you could f***ing possibly ask and offer me to settle this,’ John yelled into the phone.
Despite telling John that he understands, Daniel proceeded to talk positively about his wife, insisting that she just ‘made a huge mistake’ in a bid to get the student’s parents to let the horrid incident go.
Newly released footage has detailed the moment the father of the teen who was involved in a sexually inappropriate relationship with Brittany Zamora spoke to her then husband, Daniel. (Pictured: Brittany and Daniel)
During their phone call, Daniel stood up for his wife and even called her a ‘great teacher’ as he tried to plead with the irate father to settle the issue outside of court. (Pictured: Brittany in her March 2018 mugshot)
The victim’s father, named John, is pictured here while visiting Zamora’s school to talk with staff about the horrific abuse inflicted on his young son
‘So, what I’m asking you is, if you could possibly, I mean – Brittany has been a great teacher for a long time, five years, she’s done so much for so many students and raised so many people’s lives from the ghetto,’ Daniel said.
‘She’s been to, you know, parents’ homes to talk to students, she’s really done the tutoring program. She’s done so much and she made a huge mistake, the biggest mistake of anybody could ever make in the whole entire world.’
Daniel even went as far as to call the man’s son ‘a great student’ and ‘great person,’ while the father fumed in the background.
‘But she got invested in a very, very, very bright, smart and great student, honestly, and a great person,’ he continued, insisting that those qualities ‘probably’ come from John and his wife Maria – the student’s step-mother.
Although John let Daniel talk, Brittany’s husband did not change his point of view.
‘Your wife decided to be a monster and prey on a child. She scarred my son mentally, do you understand what a 13-year-old boy did?,’ John said.
Daniel then asked what the father meant by that, but John declined to share sickening details of Zamora’s rapes.
The abuse began after Brittany informed her students she would be out of school the following day and that they could contact her using an app called Class Craft because she would be bored, according to records.
District attorneys said the pair once even touched each other sexually while other students in the class watched a video in the classroom (pictured)
Her messages with the boy soon turned romantic and the pair started having sex, prosecutors said.
Brittany was caught by her victim’s parents who decided to install an app on his phone called Sentry Parental Control, which monitors messaging apps for ‘suspicious content or behavior’, after they noticed he was acting strangely.
The Sentry app sends parents alerts when it detects suspicious images, messages, or if a child is exposed to inappropriate online content through its web monitoring feature.
When the teen’s parents started getting the alerts about inappropriate text messages, they confronted their son and he admitted to having sex with his teacher.
District attorneys said the pair once even touched each other sexually while other students in the class watched a video in the classroom.
In one X-rated back-and-forth, Brittany told the boy she wanted to have sex with him ‘every day with no time limit.’
‘Wyd?’ she started one conversation with him, using the slang-abbreviation for ‘what are you doing?’
He replied: ‘Thinking about your sexy self’ and added two pink heart emojis.
‘Aww baby (love heart eyes emoji) I wish you were with me,’ she responded.
Daniel even went as far as to call the man’s son ‘a great student’ and ‘great person,’ while the father fumed in the background. (Pictured: Daniel and Brittany at their wedding in 2015)
The boy replied: ‘I want u bby. (sic).. when can we f**k again?’, this time adding two red heart emojis to his message.
Brittany replied: ‘I want you too baby so bad! Whenever we can you know I’m down,’ with a red heart emoji.
She went on: ‘Like you for real get sexier to me every day lol.’
‘I want to f**k you so bad baby those times weren’t enough,’ the boy replied to her. She responded: ‘Me neither baby! I want you every day with no time limit.’
In another message, she told him she would quit her job in order for them to be together.
They also exchanged explicit photographs including images of Brittany naked in lingerie. The boy also gave her love notes on brightly colored post-its which contained messages including ‘you are sexy’, according to police.
On two occasions, she drove to his grandparents’ home to have sex with him in her car while her husband was fishing.
She and the boy performed oral sex on each other before her husband phoned to tell her he would be home soon, according to the records.
What’s more, is for many of their illicit interactions, an 11-year-old friend of the victim would act as a ‘look out’ to make sure nobody spotted the former teacher and student together.
The boy also gave her love notes (pictured) on brightly colored post-its which contained messages including ‘you are sexy’, according to police
After she was arrested, Brittany told police that she was nervous she would not survive behind bars, stating: ‘I’m little. They’re gonna tear me apart.’ (Pictured: Brittany in court in July 2019)
The child told authorities that Brittany even threatened him and the victim that if they ever told anyone what was happening, they would get ‘in deep trouble’, the new clip revealed.
It was previously reported that three students at the school also complained to administrators about Brittany favoring the 13-year-old.
Some of the students went so far as to say that she was ‘dating’ or ‘in a relationship’ with the teen.
‘Everyone talks about them having an inappropriate relationship outside of class and at recess,’ one of the students said, according to notes taken by Principal Tom Dickey in an interview.
‘I’ve heard other kids in my class say that they think they are dating,’ another note read.
At the time, the school district interim superintendent, Richard Rundhaug, said that they investigated the allegations, but found no evidence of a romantic relationship.
Despite Daniel’s support over the phone, the marriage later foundered.
Brittany filed for divorce from Daniel on April 28, 2020 – nearly one year after she pleaded guilty and was sentenced for sexual conduct with a minor, public sexual indecency and molestation of a child.
In the court documents, Brittany checked a box reading, ‘Our marriage is broken beyond repair (“irretrievably broken”) and there is no hope of reconciliation.’
Court documents later revealed that the victim’s father told police that both Brittany and Daniel were harassing him over the phone, trying to justify her actions and convince him to not take them to court. (Pictured: Brittany’s update mugshot)
As part of the filing, Brittany has relinquished her hold on the family home and all other shared properties.
The couple married in 2015 after meeting when they were 16. They have no children together.
Court documents later revealed that the victim’s father told police that both Brittany and Daniel were harassing him over the phone, trying to justify her actions and convince him to not take them to court.
John went on to file a lawsuit against Daniel for failing to alert authorities when he learned of the affair. It was settled for an undisclosed amount.
After she was arrested, Brittany told police that she was nervous she would not survive behind bars, stating: ‘I’m little. They’re gonna tear me apart.’
She then asked ‘Can I have an attorney?’ when the interviewer declared: ‘I’m going to give you an opportunity to explain what happened.’
Before being helped into a police car by an officer who warned her to watch her step, she asked cops to help her move her hair in front of her face to avoid the glare of waiting media. She even appeared to be smiling at one point.
