  • Joson Sanon expects to play for ASU vs. No. 3 Iowa State

Arizona State freshman Joson Sanon, who is dealing with an ankle injury, practiced Friday and is expected to play Saturday as the men’s basketball team hosts the No. 3 Iowa State Cyclones.

“Joson looked fantastic today. It’s as good as he’s looked since prior to the injury,” ASU head coach Bobby Hurley told reporters. “He’s going to be green-lighted tomorrow assuming he responded well from what he did today in practice, which there’s nothing that I would think would be holding him back.”

Sanon has played just one game this month, an 18-minute performance in an overtime game against Baylor on Jan. 11.

He’s still the team’s second-leading scorer (12.8 points per game) behind wing BJ Freeman (13.2 points per game).

Sanon is Arizona State’s most efficient perimeter scorer, who has hit 47% of his overall shots and 48% of his threes on 4.7 attempts per game.

ASU (11-7) is coming off a road win against then- No. 23 West Virginia that ended a four-game skid.

Iowa State (16-2) fell to that same WVU team on Jan. 18 but recovered in its last outing, a 108-83 win over UCF on Tuesday.

Hurley hopes that acts as a confidence booster that combined with Sanon’s return can give the Sun Devils a chance against an ISU team that ranks in the top-10 in both offensive and defensive KenPom ratings.

“That’s been a struggle, at times, just always being able to generate offense, always being able to keep fresh bodies on the floor,” Hurley said of Arizona State’s struggles this year. “When you add someone like (Sanon) back into the mix, it should hopefully give us a boost.”

Joson Sanon, the star player for Arizona State University’s basketball team, is expected to make a comeback in the upcoming game against No. 3 ranked Iowa State. After missing the last few games due to injury, Sanon has been working hard to recover and is eager to get back on the court.

Sanon’s presence on the team is crucial, as his scoring ability and defensive prowess have been instrumental in ASU’s success this season. His return is sure to boost the team’s morale and give them a much-needed edge against a tough opponent like Iowa State.

Fans are excited to see Sanon back in action and are hopeful that he will make a significant impact in the game. With his talent and determination, there’s no doubt that Sanon will give it his all and help lead ASU to victory. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting matchup between ASU and Iowa State, with Sanon back in the lineup.

Montana Warren got the start at nickel in place of Simmons, who said the key to his own success would be not skipping a beat when he came in for the third quarter.

He definitely didn’t skip any beats when knocking out the ball for a fumble in the end zone before getting up off the ground and tackling Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers for the safety. ASU cut the deficit to 17-5 and kicked a field goal on the ensuing possession.

The safety came on the first play after Texas had stopped ASU on a fourth-down attempt near the goal line.

ASU basketball drops Big 12 opener on road to BYU

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Richie Saunders scored a career-high 30 points and BYU cruised to a 76-56 victory over ASU basketball on Tuesday’s Big 12 Conference opener.

BJ Freeman had 11 points to lead the Sun Devils (9-3), who as a team shot 36.8% from the field and 20.7% from beyond the arc. Freeman was the only player on the team to score in double figures.

Saunders made 11 of 18 shots with a career-best six 3-pointers and 2 of 3 free throws for the Cougars (10-2), who have won four in a row. He is the first BYU player to score 30 since Alex Barcello had 33 nearly three years ago.

Kanon Catchings buried three from 3-point range and scored 11 for BYU. Keba Keita had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Saunders made three 3-pointers and scored 13 to help BYU take a 31-26 advantage into halftime. He scored eight as the Cougars jumped out to an 11-2 lead and his 3-pointer off a fast break gave them an 18-4 advantage in the first 8:19. Arizona State shot just 32.3% and missed 13 of 15 from 3-point range at the intermission.

Saunders hit a 3-pointer and Keita had baskets at both ends of a 9-0 run as BYU upped its lead to 12 in the first three minutes of the second half. The Cougars led by double digits from there.

ASU cut the deficit to 59-45 with 7:42 remaining after an Amier Ali dunk, but technical fouls called on Ali and head coach Bobby Hurley allowed BYU to break the game open further. ASU was down 65-45 when it got the ball back.

Arizona State will host Colorado on Saturday.

The Arizona State University basketball team suffered a tough loss in their Big 12 opener on the road against Brigham Young University. Despite a strong effort, the Sun Devils fell short against the Cougars in a close and competitive game.

The Sun Devils showed flashes of brilliance throughout the game, but struggled to maintain consistency on both ends of the court. BYU’s sharpshooting and strong defensive presence proved to be too much for ASU to overcome.

Head coach Bobby Hurley and his team will need to regroup and refocus as they look ahead to their next conference matchups. With plenty of season left to play, the Sun Devils will aim to bounce back and make a strong push in the competitive Big 12 conference.

Stay tuned for more updates on ASU basketball as they continue their journey through conference play.

  • Why a Tucson columnist is rooting for ASU in the Peach Bowl

Why a Tucson columnist is rooting for ASU in the Peach Bowl

What you are about to read might be the most controversial stance in the history of the Arizona Daily Star Sports section.

I’m hesitant to make it public lest angry Arizona fans hurl vicious insults (or possibly rotten tomatoes) in my direction.

This take is hotter than your steering wheel when you forget to put the sun shade up on a July afternoon in Tucson. It’s spicier than the “reaper” level of heat at Dave’s Hot Chicken.

I’m rooting for Arizona State in the Peach Bowl on Wednesday.

I side with the Sun Devils fully acknowledging that it’s borderline blasphemy to do so. Most UA fans would never go there. ASU isn’t just a century-long rival; it’s Arizona’s sworn enemy.

Chuck Cecil doesn’t dislike the “Scummies” — he despises them. When he spies maroon and gold, he sees red. The Territorial Cup is a blood feud. The hate is real.

    People are also reading…

The disdain for ASU is so formidable that some refuse to acknowledge it by name. It is dismissively referred to as “The School Up North.” I’m not even sure those words should be capitalized.

I’m neither a UA alum nor a native Tucsonan. I started visiting here regularly in the early 2000s when I was dating my future wife, who is both of those things. It took one football game — the 2016 Territorial Cup, my first — to understand the animosity. To feel the hostility. To embrace the bitterness.

Many of you will never pull for ASU. You will always wish the worst for the Sun Devils. You took an oath when you were born in this town or became a Wildcat. You view any favor shown to ASU as an act of treason. I respect your commitment to the bit.

But please understand what actually will be transpiring Wednesday when Arizona State faces Texas in the Peach Bowl, which is also a College Football Playoff quarterfinal:

I won’t be rooting for ASU so much as what ASU represents.

Normally, UA vs. ASU is “us vs. them.” In this maiden voyage of the 12-team CFP, ASU is us.

The Sun Devils are repping the Big 12 against the “Big 2.” It’s no secret that the SEC and Big Ten look down on the rest of college football. Look no further than the point spread between the Sun Devils and Longhorns. It opened with Texas as a 13.5-point favorite. It’s 12.5 as of this writing. It’s a blatant sign of disrespect. It’s a clear illustration that the oddsmakers — whose lines reflect the public’s sentiments — think the Big 12 stinks.

Another example: In the discourse about who should make the CFP — a never-ending debate that unfortunately resurfaced and tarnished the opening weekend of games — no one brought up BYU. Only mighty Alabama from the powerful SEC could have given Notre Dame or Penn State a battle.

Never mind that the Cougars went 10-2 during the regular season, with the losses coming by a combined nine points. Or that one of them was on the road against eventual Big 12 champion ASU. Or that BYU won on the road against eventual CFP at-large entrant SMU.

None of that mattered because BYU plays in the Big 12 and not the SEC or Big Ten. The CFP committee ranked all three three-loss SEC teams — Alabama, Ole Miss and South Carolina — ahead of BYU. It had the ACC’s Miami Hurricanes — who had the same 10-2 record — four spots ahead of BYU.

The CFP committee also ranked Alabama — despite its 24-3 loss at Oklahoma, which then lost its bowl game to Navy to finish 6-7 — ahead of ASU. That happened one day after ASU obliterated Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship Game.

What’s that all about? Brand bias. It’s about elevating SEC teams simply because they play in the SEC. It’s about anointing the Crimson Tide because of their history, not their merit.

So yeah, I’m not just rooting for ASU on Wednesday. I’m rooting for the Big 12 and BYU. And I’m rooting against college football’s oligarchy.

Also — and this is the part that probably should be uttered in a whisper — this Sun Devils team is kinda likable.

First off, they are the ultimate underdogs. The media picked ASU to finish last in the 16-team Big 12. The Sun Devils ended up first.

Their best player, running back Cam Skattebo, is also an underdog. Despite rushing for 6,192 yards in three varsity high school seasons — including 3,550 as a junior; not a typo — Skattebo had zero stars and zero FBS scholarship offers. He began his college career at FCS Sacramento State before transferring to and starring at ASU. He wound up earning the fifth-most votes for the Heisman Trophy.

Skattebo isn’t just good at football, he’s fun to watch. He never goes down on first contact. He brushes aside would-be tacklers. He puts the Sun Devils on his sturdy back, averaging 23 touches per game.

ASU’s head coach, Kenny Dillingham, has won over the skeptics — myself included — who initially found his frat-boy vibe annoying. You can’t deny his accomplishments, lifting the Sun Devils from 3-9 to 11-2 in two years’ time. You can’t dispute the effectiveness of his approach — open, energetic, enthusiastic, uplifting.

Are the 2024 Sun Devils a one-off? We’ll see. UA fans know how that can go. But it seems highly unlikely that Dillingham, a Valley kid and ASU alum, will bail for a “better” job as soon as one comes along.

The long-term viability of Arizona’s foremost adversary is another topic for another time. I’m locked in on Wednesday. ASU vs. Texas. Big 12 vs. Big 2. Upstart vs. blue blood. Us vs. them.

As a Tucson resident and die-hard Wildcat fan, it may come as a surprise to some that I am actually rooting for ASU in the Peach Bowl. Before you gasp in disbelief, let me explain my reasoning.

First and foremost, I believe in supporting our state and its teams when they are competing on a national stage. ASU representing Arizona in the Peach Bowl is a big deal and I want to see them succeed. A win for the Sun Devils is a win for our state and showcases the talent and competitiveness of Arizona teams.

Additionally, I have to give credit where credit is due. ASU has had an impressive season and has shown resilience and determination on the field. Their success is not something that should go unnoticed or unappreciated, regardless of my allegiance to the Wildcats.

Lastly, I am a fan of good football. And let’s face it, a win for ASU in the Peach Bowl would be a great accomplishment and a thrilling game to watch. I can put aside my team loyalty for one game and appreciate the skill and excitement that comes with a competitive matchup.

So, while my heart will always bleed red and blue for the Wildcats, I will be proudly cheering on ASU in the Peach Bowl. Go Sun Devils!

BYU’s Egor Demin, Richie Saunders Set To Return Against ASU

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball tips off Big 12 play on Tuesday, and some of their top players will return from injury.

Starters Egor Demin and Richie Saunders are expected to return to the lineup when BYU takes on Arizona State on New Year’s Eve.

“Barring anything unforeseen, those guys should be available [against Arizona State],” said BYU head coach Kevin Young on Monday.

Demin suffered a knee contusion in the opening minutes of BYU’s road loss at Providence on December 3. Saunders suffered a concussion on the game’s first possession in a win over Wyoming at the Delta Center on December 14.

Demin missed only three games with the light schedule for BYU in December, and Saunders missed one.

Now, they gear up for the start of the gauntlet known as Big 12 Conference play.

Egor Demin & Richie Saunders should be available against Arizona State

Young says Demin and Saunders have performed well in practice in their ramp-up to the Big 12 opener against the Sun Devils.

“They look good. Still monitoring those guys to make sure everything checks out,” Young said. “I wish we could have played even more, honestly, just to get those guys more run. But I know they’re both eager and ready to get back out there with their teammates.”

Demin, a projected NBA lottery pick, has shined in his first season in college basketball. The 6-foot-9 guard is averaging 13.3 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.6 rebounds while shooting close to 50% from the field.

A 6-foot-5 forward, Saunders has settled in as a starter for the first time in his collegiate career—the Riverton native is averaging 12.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists.

BYU braces for young, talented ASU in Big 12 basketball opener – Deseret News

The past few months have been halcyon days for BYU sports, as men’s and women’s cross-country teams claimed national championships in November and the football team demolished Colorado 36-14 last Saturday in the Alamo Bowl to complete an overwhelmingly successful season.

New BYU men’s basketball coach Kevin Young has noticed.

So as Young’s team, which went a respectable 9-2 in nonconference play, prepares to begin the Big 12 portion of its schedule Tuesday with a matinee affair against 9-2 Arizona State at the Marriott Center (2 p.m. MST, ESPN2), the newcomer realizes the importance of keeping the positive vibes going.

“I am just happy to be a part of it. It is exciting. I am hoping that we can kinda carry the torch now that football is over and we can kinda keep this momentum going,” Young told reporters Monday in a video teleconference.

Young has described himself as a “huge college football fan” in the past and called the bowl win “super impressive.” He said BYU football coach Kalani Sitake has done “an amazing job” with the football team, winning six more games this year than last.

“There are a lot of cool things happening at this university. And it is a credit to Tom (Holmoe) and Brian (Santiago) and president (Shane) Reese and Keith (Vorkink) and everyone,” Young said. “The leadership team here that has put together a really outstanding athletic department to go along with a really outstanding university.”

“There are a lot of cool things happening at this university.”

    —  First-year BYU basketball coach Kevin Young

Keeping the mojo going won’t be easy in the Big 12 basketball race, which is arguably tougher to win than the Big 12 football race, especially now that Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado have joined the conference.

Arizona State was expected to be down a bit in 2024-25, but coach Bobby Hurley has retooled his roster, almost like everyone else in college basketball, with positive results. It is nothing like the team BYU pummeled 77-49 last year in Las Vegas. Freshman- and transfer-led ASU is coming off a 78-62 walloping of UMass on Dec. 21 in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Sun Devils’ only losses were 83-66 to No. 9 Florida and 88-80 to No. 6 Gonzaga. Arizona State’s best wins are New Mexico (85-82), Saint Mary’s (68-64) and Grand Canyon (87-76). BYU’s NET ranking is No. 45, while ASU’s is No. 51.

Young said while he was growing up in the Atlanta area he never looked up to the former Duke standout Hurley because he “was never a big Duke guy,” and never really met him while they both coached in the Valley of the Sun — Young as an assistant with the Phoenix Suns — but has a lot of respect for what Hurley has got going at ASU.

“He clearly knows what he is doing, gets his guys to play really hard. So just a lot of respect for the start that they have had. They have beaten some really quality opponents,” Young said. “And they feed off of his energy, I am sure. Just looking forward for us to compete against a high level opponent.”

Five Sun Devils are averaging in double figures, led by 6-foot-5 freshman guard Joson Sanon (14.0 ppg.) and senior Basheer Jihad (13.9), a Ball State transfer who had 20 points in the win over the Minutemen.

Another ASU freshman, 6-9 forward Jayden Quaintance, is averaging 9.4 points and 8.3 rebounds. Young said Quaintance’s defense reminds him of NBA all-star Draymond Green, “where he is a one-man wrecking crew out there” for the defensive-minded Devils.

“Those young guys are really talented. I am pretty familiar with both of them,” Young said. “Joson can really score the ball. He is a guy that is extremely efficient — one of the most efficient shooters in college basketball to start the season. He can go off for 30 (points) on any given night. So we will have to pay a lot of attention to him.”

On the BYU side, Young said freshman point guard Egor Demin and junior wing Richie Saunders are both expected to play “barring anything foreseen” after Demin has been out of action with a knee contusion since the 83-64 loss to Providence on Dec. 3 and Saunders has been out since suffering a concussion against Wyoming on Dec. 14.

“They have been able to practice quite a bit. They look good. Still monitoring those guys to make sure everything checks out,” Young said. “I wish we could have played even more, honestly, to get those guys more run. But I know they are both eager and ready to get back out there with their teammates.”

BYU hasn’t played since drubbing Florida A&M 103-57 on Dec. 20, a break it needed to get Demin, Saunders and a few other guys healed up and provide some “mental clarity” after a fairly light nonconference schedule he inherited that Young wishes would have been more difficult.

“It was good for those guys to get additional rest. … And come back with a sense of urgency for this push here in conference play, and just more on the mental side is where we gained an edge,” he said.

With students on their holiday break, playing a midweek game at 2 p.m. on New Year’s Eve doesn’t seem like an optimal day or time to start Big 12 play, but Young isn’t complaining. BYU plays at ASU on Feb. 26, a Wednesday.

“We are looking forward to it. I don’t put a lot of stock into home and road. I know the records and history would say otherwise, but I think it is just a mentality,” Young said. “Whether there is one fan, no fans, a thousand fans, 10,000 fans, 17,000 fans, home, road, whatever, you gotta go out there and execute,” he said.

“I like the fact that we have had day games, night games, early games, midday games, home games, road games, whatever the case may be. I think it is really good preparation,” he continued. “It just so happens that our Big 12 opener falls midday on a non-school day. But I have a sneaky suspicion that the crowd will still be pretty good.”
