  • Rumor Roundup: John Cena update, Asuka return, Royal Rumble record, more!

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

    Rumors for the Day:

    • John Cena hasn’t made an appearance in WWE since announcing for the Royal Rumble, and PW Insider says that’s because he’s been in Budapest, Hungary filming the Matchbox movie.
    • WWE’s started discussing creative for Asuka’s return, per Fightful Select. Those plans included a potential tag match, but that idea was scrapped. No word on when Asuka will be back; the site was unable to confirm if Asuka’s resumed training, or what her status is for Royal Rumble.
    • Indiana Sports Corp’s Patrick Talty told Inside Indiana Business this weekend’s Royal Rumble in Indianapolis could draw 65,000. The would break the long-standing Rumble record from 1997’s San Antonio show, when 60,447 were at the Alamodome. That’s in line with WrestleTix’s latest report on the show.
    • “Tony Khan has been more in the weeds creatively” for AEW “over the last couple of weeks”, according to a Fightful Select report that also said their sources at the company were “very pumped with the execution and reaction to” last Saturday’s Collision.
    • On Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez said he’d heard from fans that AEW is running a buy-one-get-one-free promotion for Grand Slam Australia tickets. Dave Meltzer replied that doing that multiple weeks before the show indicates to him that “there are a lot of seats left.”
    • Matt Riddle missed his scheduled booking with Memphis Wrestling on Sunday after attending Nick Hogan’s wedding the night before. PW Insider says Riddle informed them he wouldn’t be coming the day of the show, with the site’s Mike Johnson adding, “I am sure that didn’t cause any last minute rewrites at all, since the taping was built around his appearance in terms of promotion.“

    WWE Return Update On Asuka

As per a report by Fightful Select, Asuka is now reportedly nearing her return, and the promotion has seemingly begun crafting creative pitches for her.

In other news: WWE has planned ‘something big’ for Penta at WrestleMania 41.

  • Asuka: ‘I absolutely reject any romantic or personal approaches toward me’

Asuka is asking fans to not make any romantic or personal approaches toward her.

On Wednesday, the four-time world champion posted a series of messages to social media that imply she may have had an unfortunate encounter with a fan recently.

    Asuka wrote:

“I absolutely reject any romantic or personal approaches toward me. There is absolutely no possibility for others to interfere in my private life.”

“Please don’t have romantic feelings for me. It’s meaningless—100% pointless.”

“I’ve been feeling in danger recently. I’ve already consulted the police. At this rate, even if fans approach me at the airport or in the city, I will feel the possibility that something might happen, and it will scare me, making me unable to respond.”

She has also added “I absolutely reject any private or romantic approaches toward me” to her bio on X.

Asuka has been out of action since May 2024. She had knee surgery in June but is expected back shortly. Fightful Select reported this week that creative pitches had been made for her return but ultimately a tag team angle fell through, possibly because most of Damage CTRL is out injured right now. Kairi Sane is out with an arm injury and Dakota Kai is in concussion protocol following a stiff-looking springboard dropkick she took from Zoey Stark last week. IYO Sky is the only member of the faction currently on the active roster.

Asuka, 43, signed with WWE in 2015. She agreed to a new long-term deal with the company in September, as per a report by PWInsider. Terms and lenth of the deal have not been disclosed.

Asuka: ‘I absolutely reject any romantic or personal approaches toward me’

In a recent interview, Japanese professional wrestler Asuka made it clear that she is not interested in any romantic or personal advances from fans or colleagues. The WWE superstar, known for her fierce in-ring persona, emphasized that her focus is solely on her career and she does not want any distractions.

Asuka stated, “I appreciate my fans and their support, but I want to make it clear that I am not open to any romantic or personal relationships. My career is my priority and I do not want anything to interfere with that. I hope that my fans can understand and respect my boundaries.”

It’s important for fans to remember that celebrities, like Asuka, are entitled to their own personal boundaries and should be respected. It’s great to show support and admiration for your favorite wrestlers, but it’s also important to remember that they are human beings with their own lives and priorities.

So, let’s show our support for Asuka by respecting her wishes and continuing to cheer her on in the ring. Let’s focus on celebrating her talent and dedication to her craft, rather than trying to pursue a personal relationship. Thank you, Asuka, for setting boundaries and standing up for yourself.

  • WWE’s Asuka ‘feeling in danger’, warn fans about ‘romantic’ advances

WWE star Asuka expressed she has been “feeling in danger” recently when it comes to interactions with fans.

The four-time women’s world champion in WWE sent out a series of posts to her official X account on Wednesday, expressing distress and frustration about fans’ interactions with her and their desire for a romantic relationship — enough so that she contacted law enforcement about it.

“I’ve been feeling in danger recently,” Asuka wrote. “I’ve already consulted the police. At this rate, even if fans approach me at the airport or in the city, I will feel the possibility that something might happen, and it will scare me, making me unable to respond.”

It’s unclear if a specific interaction sparked Asuka’s fear and concern.

A portion of wrestling fans have become known for hounding performers in bunches at airports, hotels and other public places for them to sign items — often turning around and selling the memorabilia on the internet for profit.

The Japanese star, who is very private about her life outside the ring, also made it clear to fans in her posts that she will “absolutely reject any romantic or personal approaches toward me.”

“Please don’t have romantic feelings for me,” Asuka wrote. “It’s meaningless — 100% pointless.”

She added: “There is absolutely no possibility for others to interfere in my private life.”

Asuka, 43, who has been with WWE since 2015, remains the longest-reigning NXT women’s champion, a four-time Women’s tag team champion, and has won the Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank.

Her fear of the worst certainly have some merit.

In 2020, WWE star Sonya Deville dealt with a scary incident in which obsessed fan Phillip Thomas drove from his home in South Carolina to the Tampa area with the intent to kidnap Deville while carrying a knife, zip ties, duct tape and mace — even breaking into her home.

He struck a plea deal for 15 years in prison in 2023 for attempted kidnapping, aggravated stalking and armed burglary.

WWE star Asuka posted she was “feeling in danger” recently. WWE

Thomas sent hundreds of threatening messages to Deville — who said she ignored them. One said he was going to “force” her to SummerSlam with him as her “boyfriend”.

Asuka has been off WWE television and out of action since getting injured in May 2024 and having knee surgery shortly after.

Asuka is currently a member of the Damage CTL faction, which is also dealing with injuries to Kairi Sane and Dakota Kai.

It remains unclear if and when Asuka could return to the ring, though Fightful Select reported WWE has made creative pitches around her.

WWE’s Asuka, the fierce and talented wrestler, recently took to social media to express her concerns about feeling in danger due to unwanted romantic advances from fans. Asuka, known for her incredible skills in the ring, made it clear that she values her privacy and personal space.

In a series of tweets, Asuka warned her fans to respect her boundaries and not cross the line by making inappropriate advances. She emphasized that she should not have to feel unsafe or uncomfortable while interacting with her fans, and that she deserves to be treated with respect.

It is important for fans to remember that wrestlers, like all public figures, are entitled to their personal space and boundaries. Asuka’s plea for respect should serve as a reminder to always approach interactions with celebrities with respect and consideration.

Let’s show our support for Asuka by respecting her wishes and treating her with the dignity and respect she deserves. Let’s continue to cheer her on in the ring and show our appreciation for her talent and hard work.
