  • Preview: Atalanta BC vs. Bologna – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday’s Coppa Italia clash between Atalanta BC and Bologna, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

This season’s Coppa Italia quarter-finals, featuring only top-flight sides, will see Atalanta BC host Bologna at the Gewiss Stadium on Tuesday in what will be the first-ever cup meeting between the sides.

La Dea reached this stage of the competition after thrashing Serie B side Cesena 6-1, while the Red and Blues eased past Monza with a 4-0 victory.

Entering their round of 16 clash against Cesena as clear favourites, Atalanta took control early, with Davide Zappacosta opening the scoring in the fourth minute, followed by a brace from Charles De Ketelaere around Lazar Samardzic‘s 27th-minute strike.

The rout continued in the second half, with Marco Brescianini adding the fifth, Samardzic grabbing his second, while Joseph Ceesay scored a late consolation as the Goddess cruised into the next phase of the competition.

This marks Atalanta’s fifth consecutive quarter-final appearance, having progressed in two of the previous four to reach the final, where they were defeated 2-1 by Juventus in 2020-21 and 1-0 last term.

Standing in the Nerazzurri’s way of matching last season’s feat is a Bologna side they have struggled against in recent times, failing to win any of the last four meetings – albeit all in the league – with three defeats and a draw.

Gian Piero Gasperini‘s men head into this clash off the back of a 1-1 stalemate against Torino in Serie A, a result that leaves them third in the standings, six points adrift of league leaders Napoli despite playing one more game.

Meanwhile, Bologna could not have asked for better timing, as they will look to exploit La Dea’s vulnerabilities on the domestic front, with the hosts managing just one win in their last seven such encounters.

Rossoblu themselves have fared better recently in Italian competitions, winning two of their last three matches, including a 2-0 triumph over Como last time out, which lifted them to sixth in the Serie A standings.

That result also extended the Red and Blues’ unbeaten run across all competitions to seven games, comprising three wins and four draws.

Bologna will look to carry this momentum into Tuesday’s cup clash as they aim to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1998-99, when they were eliminated by Fiorentina.

It is worth noting that Vincenzo Italiano‘s side have now reached the quarter-finals in back-to-back seasons after proving too strong for Monza, who crumbled under goals from Tommaso Pobega, Riccardo Orsolini, Benjamín Domínguez and Santiago Castro.

    Team News

Atalanta have three players on the treatment table, with Giorgio Scalvini (shoulder), Ademola Lookman (knee) and Odilon Kossounou (hamstring), all sidelined for Tuesday’s encounter.

Given the calibre of the opposition, Gasperini is expected to name a strong lineup, with the club’s top scorer this season, Mateo Retegui, set to lead the line.

Rui Patricio made only his second appearance for La Dea last time out, having also featured in the cup win against Cesena, and he could retain his spot between the sticks on Tuesday.

Bologna will be without Lewis Ferguson, who is ruled out with a hamstring injury, while Orsolini remains a doubt, having missed the last three games with the same issue.

Castro may get the nod ahead of Thijs Dallinga in the centre-forward role, with the former expected to return to the lineup after starting on the bench against Como.

    Atalanta BC possible starting lineup:
Patricio; Kolasinac, Hien, Djimsiti; Bellanova, Ederson, De Roon, Ruggeri; De Ketelaere, Samardzic; Retegui

    Bologna possible starting lineup:
Ravaglia; Holm, Lucumi, Beukema, Lykogiannis; Freuler, Pobega; Ndoye, Odgaard, Dominguez; Castro

    SM words green background

We say: Atalanta BC 2-1 Bologna

This encounter looks finely balanced and could even go beyond regulation time, given Atalanta’s struggles for wins and Bologna’s recent resilience.

However, the hosts may have the edge, backed by their pedigree in this competition and the advantage of playing at home.

Atalanta BC will face off against Bologna in a crucial Serie A match, with both teams looking to secure valuable points in the race for a top-four finish. Here is a preview of the upcoming game, including predictions, team news, and possible lineups:

    Prediction:
Atalanta BC have been in impressive form recently, winning their last three league matches. With their potent attack led by the likes of Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel, they will be looking to continue their winning streak against Bologna. However, Bologna have also been in good form and will pose a tough challenge for Atalanta. This match is likely to be a closely contested affair, with both teams capable of scoring goals. I predict a 2-1 win for Atalanta.

    Team News:
Atalanta will be without the services of midfielder Matteo Pessina, who is sidelined with an injury. However, they will have their key players available for selection, including captain Papu Gomez and goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini. Bologna, on the other hand, will be missing the likes of Gary Medel and Federico Santander due to injuries. However, they will have their top scorer Musa Barrow leading the attack.

    Possible Lineups:
Atalanta BC: Gollini; Toloi, Romero, Djimsiti; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Gosens; Gomez, Zapata, Muriel.

Bologna: Skorupski; Tomiyasu, Danilo, Denswil, Dijks; Poli, Schouten, Svanberg; Orsolini, Barrow, Sansone.

Overall, this match promises to be an exciting encounter between two attacking-minded teams. Both Atalanta BC and Bologna will be looking to secure a vital win, and it will be interesting to see how the match unfolds. Stay tuned for the final result and match analysis.

  • Daniel Maldini signs for Atalanta | Daniel Maldini signs for Atalanta

Atalanta BC are glad to announce the permanent signing of 23-year-old forward Daniel Maldini from AC Monza.

Born in Milan on 11 October 2001, Daniel climbed up the AC Milan Youth Academy ladders all the way to his First Team debut, which occurred on 2 February 2020 in front of the San Siro crowd on the occasion of the Serie A game played against Hellas Verona.

Upon reaching First Team status for the Rossoneri Club in the 2020-2021 campaign, Daniel collected 5 Serie A caps and made 4 more international appearances on the UEFA Europa League stage.

The 2021-2022 season, which saw Milan claim the Scudetto, ended with Maldini notching up 13 appearances across all competitions: namely, 8 in the Serie A, 3 in the UEFA Champions League and 2 in the Coppa Italia.

Next came a loan spell at Spezia in the 2022-2023 season, where Daniel scored 3 goals, of which 2 in his 18 Serie A games and 1 in his 2 Coppa Italia caps donning for the Ligurian Whites’ jersey.

Upon spending the first half of the 2023/24 season with Empoli, he completed a move to Monza in January 2024, where he made 18 appearances in the Italian top flight, embellished by 4 goals and 1 assist.

Featuring for the Briantei also in the former half of the current campaign, Maldini has defended the white-and-red shirt of the Brianza side in 20 Serie A matches, netting 3 goals and providing 1 key pass, along with 1 appearance in the Coppa Italia.

Upon representing Italy at the youth level, playing for the Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-20s Azzurrini sides, Daniel eventually made his Senior debut on October 14 2024 making a substitute appearance in Italy’s 4-1 win over Israel in the UEFA Nations League before earning his second cap in a 3-1 defeat to France.

The Percassi and Pagliuca families and the whole Club would like to extend a warm welcome to Daniel Maldini and wish him the best of luck in his future personal and team endeavours as a Nerazzurro.

AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini’s son, Daniel Maldini, has officially signed for Atalanta. The 20-year-old midfielder has followed in his father’s footsteps by making a move to Serie A club Atalanta, after spending his entire career at AC Milan.

Daniel Maldini is considered a promising young talent and has already made a few appearances for AC Milan’s first team. He will now have the opportunity to further develop his skills and gain more playing time at Atalanta.

Fans are excited to see what the future holds for Daniel Maldini at his new club and are looking forward to watching him make a name for himself in Serie A. Congratulations to Daniel on his new journey with Atalanta! #DanielMaldini #Atalanta #SerieA.

  • Daniel Maldini joins Atalanta from Monza for 13m, Milan profit is 7m

Daniel Maldini has completed his transfer from Monza to Atalanta for circa €13m, with half of that fee going to his old club Milan.

He put pen to paper on the contract this afternoon that runs to June 2029, with a move worth €10m in the fixed fee, plus up to €3m in various performance-related bonuses.

The creative midfielder and support striker was a product of the Milan youth academy, where he became the third generation of his family to represent the club after father Paolo and grandfather Cesare.

The 23-year-old has two senior caps for Italy, both earned in October 2024.

Maldini career takes him to Atalanta

Maldini went on several loan spells to Spezia and Empoli before the sale to Monza for €5m with 50 per cent of the sell-on fee going to the Rossoneri.

He had amassed three goals and one assist in 20 Serie A appearances so far this season, plus one Coppa Italia game.

Maldini scored 10 goals with two assists in 71 Serie A career matches.

This allows Nicolo’ Zaniolo to join Fiorentina.

AC Milan has made a tidy profit on one of their prized young talents, as Daniel Maldini has completed a 13 million euro move to Atalanta from Monza. The 20-year-old midfielder, who is the son of Milan legend Paolo Maldini, has been making a name for himself in Serie B with Monza, but now he will have the opportunity to shine in the top flight with Atalanta.

Milan will reportedly pocket 7 million euros from the transfer, as they had a sell-on clause in Maldini’s contract with Monza. This deal represents a significant windfall for the Rossoneri, who will be pleased to see one of their academy graduates making a big move to a top club in Serie A.

Atalanta will be hoping that Maldini can follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both of whom had illustrious careers at Milan. With his technical ability, vision, and footballing intelligence, Maldini has the potential to become a key player for Atalanta in the coming seasons.

Overall, this transfer is a win-win for all parties involved, with Milan making a healthy profit, Atalanta securing a promising young talent, and Maldini getting the chance to showcase his skills at a higher level. It will be fascinating to see how the young midfielder adapts to life in Serie A and how he can contribute to Atalanta’s ambitions in the future.

  • Atalanta confirm signing of Daniel Maldini with Milan set to receive €7m

Daniel Maldini has, today, joined Atalanta on a permanent move from Monza, and AC Milan will pocket half of the transfer fee due to a clause.

Atalanta have had a keen interest in Maldini’s progression with Monza since joining the club permanently six months ago, and in December, there were suggestions that the club could look to make a move in the January window.

In the past few days, the likelihood of that deal has increased substantially, and now, the move has been made official by La Dea this afternoon.

It has been heavily reported that the Rossoneri would pocket 50% of any move for the youngster, so they will be happy to be given a cash injection from the move. However, if Maldini follows a similar path to Charles De Ketelaere in Bergamo, a feeling of regret could rise quite quickly. Especially with the club looking for another Trequartista in the mercato.

However, the Rossoneri did not act on any reported interest they held, so it may sit as a feeling of what if.

Considering how the club lost out on a fortune from the Champions League, the additional funds will be welcomed with open arms, especially considering the club are looking to be active themselves, even after the addition of Santiago Gimenez.

Atalanta confirm signing of Daniel Maldini with Milan set to receive €7m

Atalanta has officially announced the signing of Daniel Maldini from AC Milan, with the Rossoneri set to receive €7m for the talented young midfielder.

Maldini, the son of AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, has been a highly sought-after prospect in Italian football and Atalanta has beaten out several other clubs to secure his services.

The 20-year-old midfielder has shown great promise during his time with Milan’s youth teams and is now ready to make the step up to senior football with Atalanta.

Milan will receive a substantial fee for Maldini’s transfer, which will help the club reinvest in new players and continue to strengthen their squad.

Atalanta fans are excited to see what Maldini can bring to their team and are hopeful that he can help lead them to success in the upcoming season.

Overall, this is a positive move for all parties involved and sets the stage for an exciting new chapter in Maldini’s career.

FC BARCELONA: Wojciech Szczesny, Jules Koundé, Ronald Araújo, Eric García, Alejandro Balde, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Gavi, Raphinha, Lamine Yamal y Robert Lewandowski.

ATALANTA BC: Camesecchi, Hien, Djimsiti, Kolasinac, De Roon, Zappacosta, Éderson, Bellanova, De Ketelaere, Pasalic y Retegui.

    Árbitro: Michael Oliver.

    Estadio: Olímpic Lluís Companys.

Hora: 12:00 pm PT, 2:00 pm MX, 3:00 pm ET

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Dest, Piqué, Lenglet, Alba; Busquets, De Jong, Pedri; Dembélé, Messi, Griezmann.

Atalanta: Gollini; Tolói, Romero, Djimsiti; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Gosens; Pessina, Muriel, Zapata.
