  • ‘Hungry’ St. John’s tops Marquette to remain atop Big East

NEW YORK — An aggressive, hounding defense. Bully ball on the offensive end. A Hall of Fame coach walking the sideline. Chants of “Let’s go, Johnnies!” filling Madison Square Garden in the final minute of No. 12 St. John’s 70-64 win over No. 11 Marquette.

For a basketball program desperate to return to relevance — and win its first Big East regular-season championship since 1992 — it was hard to escape the feeling that Tuesday night was a turning point.

There have been false dawns for St. John’s basketball before, but this season’s Red Storm have won nine games in a row and 15 of their past 16, and they sit atop the Big East standings at 11-1.

And now they have the statement win they’ve been looking for all season.

“You guys can see it now,” St. John’s forward RJ Luis Jr. said. “We’re a very hungry group, and we’re very determined to win. We came out tonight, came out fighting, and was able to get the tough win versus a very good Marquette team.”

It was just about one year ago when coach Rick Pitino walked into the news conference following St. John’s eighth loss in 10 games, a 68-62 defeat to Seton Hall after leading by 19 points, and lamented his team’s lack of toughness and athleticism.

“If I said I was disappointed, that would be the understatement of the year,” he said last February. “Our lateral quickness and our toughness is just something I’ve never witnessed in all my years of coaching.”

Twelve months and a revamped roster later, and St. John’s has one of the elite defenses in college basketball, ranking in the top five nationally in adjusted efficiency per KenPom. The team’s effort at that end of the floor has been at the heart of its success, and that was again the case Tuesday.

Despite not shooting well from the 3-point line (3-for-16) or the free throw line (17-for-31), St. John’s held Marquette to 0.95 points per possession — the Golden Eagles’ second-worst offensive performance of the campaign.

There was no possession more evident of the Red Storm’s commitment on defense than after St. John’s took a 66-59 lead in the final two minutes. Marquette needed to come down and score quickly to cut the lead, but the Golden Eagles simply couldn’t get a look at the basket. They dribbled around for 25 seconds before Kadary Richmond blocked a 3-point attempt into the stands with 1:11 remaining.

“I thought all the guys played great defense,” Pitino said. “They help each other, they switch. This is a relentless defensive team, and you see it all the time. … This is a relentless group. A relentless group that’s totally bought into stopping every play.”

St. John’s withstood early shooting woes by attacking the offensive glass. At one point late in the first half, Marquette had made five 3s to the Red Storm’s 0. But St. John’s countered that by grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to Marquette’s 0, resulting in seven second-chance points.

“I thought they played with incredible violence,” Marquette coach Shaka Smart said. “They were just the more aggressive team for the majority of the game.”

Stingy defense and offensive rebounding have been part of the Red Storm’s identity all season, but lately the reemergence of Richmond has given them an added dimension on offense.

Richmond, the No. 1 player in the transfer portal last spring after leaving Seton Hall, hadn’t quite reached the same heights at St. John’s through the first 2½ months of the season. But he had 24 points — including the game winner — 8 rebounds and 8 assists against Providence on Saturday, and he finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists on Tuesday.

“He’s a humble superstar. And I’ll tell you, in this day and age, you don’t get Kadary Richmonds anymore,” Pitino said. “Kadary has been a joy to coach. A humble, hard-working guy who’s getting better at his age, he’s like a fine wine. He’s just getting better and he’s just a great teammate. He doesn’t look for credit, he doesn’t look for praise. He makes a mistake, he goes, ‘It’s on me.’ I wish they would all act like that, but he’s a pro. He’s a professional. He acts that way. So, I’m very lucky to have him.”

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, “We want UConn!” chants rang out from certain corners of the Garden. St. John’s heads to Storrs to face UConn on Friday night, another game for the Red Storm to lay down a marker in their quest for a conference title.

But Pitino wasn’t interested in giving the Huskies any bulletin board material. When asked after the game for his thoughts on the chants about the two-time reigning national champions, the coach was succinct:

    “I think they’re drunk.”

In a thrilling matchup, St. John’s University emerged victorious over Marquette to maintain their position at the top of the Big East standings. The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense.

Despite a valiant effort from Marquette, St. John’s was able to pull away in the final minutes thanks to some clutch shooting and strong performances from their star players. The win solidifies St. John’s as a force to be reckoned with in the Big East, as they continue their quest for a conference championship.

Fans of St. John’s can celebrate this hard-fought victory and look forward to more exciting games ahead. With their hunger for success and determination to win, St. John’s is proving to be a team to watch in the Big East.

  • Auburn, Duke remain 1-2 atop latest AP Top 25 men’s poll

Auburn and Duke remain 1-2 atop The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll for the third straight week, while Maryland is back in the rankings for the first time in nearly two years.

Bruce Pearl’s Tigers (20-1) held the No. 1 ranking for the fourth consecutive week in Monday’s poll and the third in a row as the unanimous choice. Auburn has claimed 246 of 248 first-place votes over the past month while remaining unbeaten in a rugged Southeastern Conference with nine ranked teams.

Auburn’s only loss came to Jon Scheyer’s Blue Devils (19-2), who enter the week with the nation’s longest winning streak at 15 games after rolling past rival North Carolina.

The two teams offered the only stability after 15 teams in last week’s AP Top 25 lost last week, with three of those losing twice.

    The top tier

Alabama moved up a spot to No. 3, followed by Tennessee jumping four spots to No. 4 in an SEC-heavy top tier. Houston climbed one spot to No. 5 despite an overtime loss to now-No. 13 Texas Tech to end a 33-game home winning streak.

Florida was next at No. 6, followed by Purdue, Iowa State, Michigan State and Texas A&M to round out the top 10.

    Rising

Texas Tech (17-4) had the biggest jump among last week’s ranked teams, rising nine spots to 13th after beating TCU at home and then beating the Cougars despite coach Grant McCasland and forward JT Toppin being ejected early.

Two-time reigning national champion UConn climbed six spots to No. 19 after winning at Marquette, while Missouri jumped five spots to No. 15 after beating Mississippi State.

In all, 10 teams moved up from their positions last week. That included Rick Pitino’s St. John’s team rising three spots to No. 12, the highest ranking for the program since finishing the 1999-2000 season at No. 9.

    Sliding

Mississippi State had the week’s biggest tumble, falling eight spots to No. 22 after home losses to Alabama and Missouri. Iowa State joined the Bulldogs in a two-loss week, falling five spots after losses to Arizona and Kansas State.

No. 16 Kansas and No. 23 Illinois also fell five spots, pushing the list of sliding teams to 10.

    Welcome

No. 18 Maryland, No. 20 Arizona and No. 24 Michigan were the week’s three new additions.

Kevin Willard’s Terrapins (17-5) jumped into the poll at No. 18 after pushing its winning streak to four games, a stretch that includes winning at then-No. 17 Illinois and beating then-No. 17 Wisconsin at home last week.

That gave Maryland its first poll ranking in nearly two years, the last coming with a week at No. 21 in late February 2023.

Arizona (15-6) returned to the poll for the first time since November. The Wildcats opened the year at No. 10 and peaked at ninth, but they’re back in after winning 11 of 12 — including against Iowa State after Caleb Love hit a halfcourt shot to force overtime.

Michigan (16-5) has two previous stints in the poll this season, peaking at No. 14 in early December.

    Farewell (for now)

Oregon was one of the three departures from this week’s poll, falling out from No. 16 after being one of the trio to lose twice last week by falling at UCLA and at home to Nebraska. Louisville (No. 21) and Vanderbilt (No. 24) also fell out after losses to unranked foes.

    Conference watch

The SEC had at least nine teams in the poll for the seventh straight week, including three weeks with 10 teams to make up 40% of the poll. The SEC has also had at least half of the top 10 eight times in nine weeks, peaking at six teams on Jan. 6. No other league has had more than six ranked teams in any week this season.

Maryland’s arrival pushed the Big Ten to six ranked teams, followed by the Big 12 with five and the Big East with three. The Atlantic Coast and American Athletic conferences each had one.

Auburn and Duke continue to dominate the college basketball scene as they hold onto the top two spots in the latest AP Top 25 men’s poll. The Tigers and Blue Devils have been consistently impressive throughout the season, and their strong performances have solidified their positions at the top of the rankings.

Auburn, led by standout players like Jabari Smith Jr. and Walker Kessler, has been on a tear with an impressive record and key victories over top teams. The Tigers have shown their ability to compete with the best and are poised to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

Duke, with a talented roster featuring Paolo Banchero and Wendell Moore Jr., has also been a force to be reckoned with. The Blue Devils have been dominant in conference play and have proven themselves as a legitimate title contender.

As the regular season winds down and March Madness approaches, all eyes will be on Auburn and Duke as they look to maintain their positions at the top of the rankings and make a run for the national championship. Stay tuned for more exciting basketball action from these powerhouse teams.

  • Ryan Day gets Ohio State back atop college football. Now he’ll make an NFL call on his own terms

ATLANTA — Please stay, Ryan Day. Give dear ol’ Ohio State a chance to win consecutive national championships. Give the Buckeyes a shot at being what Alabama was or what Georgia might be.

Please stay, Ryan Day, because right now you’re too good for the Buckeyes. That’s less of a shiv in the back to the crazed Scarlet and Gray critics who kicked you to the curb 7 ½ weeks ago, after the latest Michigan loss, and more of a fact. Right now after beating Notre Dame 34-23 to win the program’s ninth championship and first in 10 years, you’re a made man. You’re good for life in Ohio. You never have to buy a drink on High Street again — or Cleveland or Cincinnati or Pickerington or wherever Bucknuts grow.

You’re minted and gold-plated as a Buckeye legend. Or should be.

The leverage now is also all yours. If you’re thinking promotion, Ryan — and you’d better be at this point — there’s only one place to go after Monday’s dunking of the Domers. It’s the place you came from on the recommendation from your mentor Chip Kelly to become Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator seven years ago.

The NFL. It’s a place where you made your name as an up and comer. It’s the place that got you to Ohio State. Now you can write your own ticket back to where you came from.

Maybe not right away. His son, RJ, has two more years of high school quarterbacking to do. The Jags, Cowboys, Jets, Saints and Raiders are still open and we’re not sure if those are great city/owner/roster fits for him. Day is a diehard Patriots fan. The stars didn’t align for that to happen this cycle and New England hired former Bucknutter Mike Vrable, who should be in Foxboro a long time. But Day is in some ways an NFL guy, raised in New England with hazy 20-something memories of cross-country drives to Super Bowls far away.

But eventually, perhaps soon, Day will land an NFL match that suits him best, because the rest of the country knows what those keyboard warriors in your own state sometimes forget: You’re a damn good coach, particularly a damn good offensive mind.

If you’re that made man then Chip Kelly might as well be your consigliere. There’s your movie reference if you need it. The stones on those two to order up that hit to Jeremiah Smith on a deep streak on third down, a win-or-lose proposition that favored the bold.

If you need any more symbolism, with seconds left in the first half LeBron James was shown on the video board in some secluded suite. The Honorary First Buckeye was decked out from head to toe in Scarlet and Gray.

Feeling the moment, LeBron took off his hat to show the crowd. It had the feel of coronation. The Buckeyes were champions by halftime.

Their coach had been underappreciated for a while, the Michigan losses be damned. In this playoff era, you don’t have to win your conference. You don’t even have to play a game to win your conference. At Ohio State, you don’t even have to beat Michigan.

OK, maybe that’s a stretch. It’s less than 10 ½ months to next season’s game at Michigan. Day and the Bucks have lost four in a row to TTUP (The Team Up North).

Except that Day is now minted as an all-time great at Ohio State, or should be. He is 70-10 after his sixth season and continues to be the winningest active coach. Woody Hayes was 57-19-3 through 80 games. Urban Meyer, the last coach to win a natty, was a staggering 72-8. Jim Tressell was 66-14.

Eighty games. That’s not a snapshot. That’s a solid foundation. That’s also just the beginning if Ohio State can hold onto their guy. It was only last month when Ohio State AD Ross Bjork said that Day would “absolutely” be back in 2025 as coach — back when some thought Bjork might be the one giving Day his walking papers.

Now we need to look for the same promise from Day himself that he will be back in the fall. It’s his leverage. He’s earned it.

After taking over as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2019, Ryan Day wasted no time in getting his team back to the top of college football. Under his leadership, the Buckeyes have been dominant, with a record of 23-2 and a Big Ten championship in just two seasons.

Day’s success at Ohio State has not gone unnoticed, and now he is reportedly drawing interest from NFL teams. However, Day is not just going to jump at the first opportunity that comes his way. He wants to make sure that any move to the NFL is on his own terms.

Day has proven himself as a top coach in college football, and he is not going to settle for anything less in the NFL. He wants to be in a situation where he can continue to build a successful program and compete for championships.

While the allure of coaching in the NFL may be tempting, Day is not going to rush into any decisions. He will take his time and evaluate all of his options before making a move.

In the meantime, Buckeye fans can rest assured that Day is fully committed to leading Ohio State to even greater heights. And if and when he does make the jump to the NFL, it will be on his own terms, ensuring that he can continue to build a winning program wherever he goes.
