Daniil Medvedev is chasing his first title since 2023 this week in Rotterdam.
By Sam JacotDaniil Medvedev has become accustomed to making history throughout his career, winning a major title at the US Open and becoming the 27th player to rise to No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
However, Medvedev needs a bounce back this week at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam, where he competes as the second seed.
Medvedev suffered a disappointing second-round defeat to #NextGenATP American Learner Tien at the Australian Open in January, a result which raised further question marks around the 28-year-old’s form after he last year failed to win a tour-level title in a season for the first time since 2017.
Speaking to ATPTour.com in Rotterdam, Medvedev assessed concerns and gave a balanced reflection on his current form.
“It was a tough result in Australia,” said Medvedev, a three-time Australian Open finalist. “In a way, it was a good match, but a tough result. I am just trying to look forward and bounce back, that is the only way. I have to try to gain some confidence to win some matches.
“I am trying to get my game more competitive. It is not easy but I am working on a lot of things but I think my confidence is the most important. Confidence and the work you put in show in the most important moments of matches, and you try and put the reps in to have that belief in your body.
“I am working on lots of areas. Let’s take volleys. I am not the best at the net on Tour but I am capable sometimes of making some amazing volleys in important moments. One against Learner in Australia. You work every day on aspects of your game and sometimes they work in matches and sometimes not. I feel I am in a good position. I had a very good pre-season and a great week before the Australian Open. I remain calm.”
Medvedev has been a constant figure inside the Top 10 in the PIF ATP Rankings since 2019, while he has accumulated tour-level titles at a consistent rate. His 20 trophies include the US Open, six ATP Masters 1000 titles and a Nitto ATP Finals crown.
But the demands of the Tour are relentless, with new talent emerging at a constant rate. To stay at the top, the competitive juices need to keep flowing, which is something Medvedev is fully aware of.
“When you are 20 years old and you first come onto Tour, you have a lot of fire and you just go for it. You are fearless. When you are 28, nearly 29, it is a bit different,” Medvedev said. “The fire still burns in me but it is a different fire. You need to try to keep the fire as the margins are so small, and I have it. When you lose early you just need to look forward because there is more coming.”
Medvedev was one of two Top 10 players who lost to #NextGenATP stars in Melbourne, with the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF champion Joao Fonseca upsetting Andrey Rublev.
Five of the eight 2024 Jeddah competitors reached at least the second round at the AO, with Tien and Michelsen enjoying fourth-round runs. Medvedev, known for his analytical approach to tennis, weighed in on the landscape of the ATP Tour with the rise of the next generation of talent.
“I think it is normal to have a new generation coming,” said Medvedev, who in 2017 competed in the first edition of the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF. “I think every generation probably had this. Young guys coming and beating Top 10 players at majors. Learner played a great match and was able to win the next one even when we finished at 3 in the morning. So that showed he was ready for it and a good sign.
“But with this new generation, there are a lot of good young guys. Some generations have more players coming through like this than others, but there are always great players coming. Let’s see what they are able to do over the coming period, that is tough. But for sure they have a very strong generation.”

Medvedev, who joins Top 10 talent Carlos Alcaraz, Alex de Minaur and Rublev in a stacked Rotterdam draw, is level at 2-2 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Swiss wild card Wawrinka.
Wawrinka has won their previous two encounters but this is the pair’s first clash since 2022. Aiming for a fast start inside the 16,000 seater Ahoy Arena, Medvedev will hope his off-court work shows on court as he tries to become a champion in Rotterdam for the second time (2023).
“I am confident I can find my level and play my best in Rotterdam,” Medvedev said. “When you have an amazing week and results and then you lose the next tournament early, you feel your good result is forgotten. That is tennis. It works both ways, when you have a bad result people focus on that until you play well again. I hope I can play well here this week at an event I have had success at.”
Medvedev will be joined by coach Gilles Cervara in Rotterdam but Gilles Simon won’t be in the box, with Medvedev recently parting ways with the Frenchman.

In a post-match interview, the Russian star acknowledged that while the fire still burns within him to win and succeed, it has taken on a different form. “I have always been a very competitive person and that drive to win is still very much alive in me,” Medvedev said. “But I have also learned to appreciate the journey and the process of improvement, rather than just focusing on the end result.”
Medvedev, who is currently ranked World No. 2, has had a strong start to the 2022 season, reaching the final in Rotterdam and winning the Australian Open earlier in January. Despite falling short in the final against Felix Auger-Aliassime, Medvedev remains optimistic about the future.
“I know that I still have a lot to learn and improve on, both on and off the court,” Medvedev said. “But I am excited about the challenges that lie ahead and I am confident that I can continue to grow as a player and as a person.”
As he looks ahead to the rest of the season, Medvedev is focused on staying healthy and maintaining a positive mindset. “Tennis is a tough sport and there will always be ups and downs, but I am determined to keep pushing myself and striving for greatness,” he said.
With his unwavering determination and newfound perspective, Daniil Medvedev is poised to achieve even greater success in the months to come. The fire may burn differently now, but it burns just as bright.

This is a match that Auger-Aliassime should win. The Canadian, a force to be reckoned with indoors, has played some excellent tennis this week – beating Arthur Cazaux, Bu Yunchaokete and Jesper de Jong to reach the final, all without dropping a set. He is also significantly more experienced than his opponent, despite being two years younger. Indeed, he will be bidding for his seventh title whilst Kovacevic will be playing in his first final.
That said, Kovacevic will doubtless be full of confidence. The American started his week in the qualifying, beating Robin Bertrand and Pablo Carreno Busta to reach the main draw where he has gone from strength-to-strength. He beat sixth seed David Goffin in the first round, Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in the second, fourth seed Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals and top seed Andrey Rublev in the last four. Goffin is the only man to take a set off him so far this week.
That said, Auger-Aliassime probably represents a step up in the quality of opposition, particularly in these conditions. The second seed’s heavy forehand might also trouble Kovacevic’s single-hander if he can get it firing down-the-line. Kovacevic certainly struggled in their only previous meeting, which Auger-Aliassime won at a canter last year in Cincinnati. This should be a closer contest and may go the distance, but Auger-Aliassime should once again have the edge.

The second seed delivered a clinical display when under pressure to oust Jesper de Jong 6-4, 7-6(4) on Saturday and reach his first indoor championship match since he won Basel in 2023. Auger-Aliassime recovered from a break deficit in the second set, where he also saved two set points, to move into a 17th career final (6-10) after two hours, two minutes.
“The second set was very tricky, up and down,” said Auger-Aliassime. “I started serving less good and kept him in the match, but in the end I was glad I was able to come back and win in two sets. Not every match is going to be a straight road forward, so to pull it through in straight sets is a great thing.”

After suffering a back injury at the end of last season, which forced him out of the Rolex Paris Masters, Auger-Aliassime has begun the year with a renewed vigour. The 24-year-old won his sixth ATP Tour title at the Adelaide International in January and holds a 9-2 record in 2025 heading into the Montpellier final on Sunday. He is seeking his first multi-title season since he lifted four trophies, all indoors, in 2022.
In Saturday’s semi-final clash with De Jong, Auger-Aliassime held his nerve when it mattered most. The Canadian No. 1 lost his way in an error-strewn second set, where he was broken to love and forced to save two set points, but produced an emphatic response in the tie-break to seal a straight-sets victory.
“[I was] very focused until the very end, until the last ball. I have lost matches like this where you miss the forehand and all of a sudden you’re in a third set,” said Auger-Aliassime, who squandered a two-sets-to-love lead against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round at the Australian Open last month. “So I tried to stay calm and very focused until the end.”
In Sunday’s final, Auger-Aliassime will face qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic, who stunned top seed and World No. 10 Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-4 for the biggest win of his career. In a match dominated by baseline exchanges, Kovacevic produced consistent depth from both wings to irritate his opponent en route to reaching his maiden tour-level final.
“It seems like every day we have the same conversation about me playing the best match I ever played,” Kovacevic said in his on-court interview. “My level has definitely been good this week. Andrey is an incredible player, I have been watching him for years. Just stepping on the court with someone like this is a privilege.
“When you’re an underdog, playing a Top 10 opponent like that, you’re a lot more free. You have to go for it against these guys. I’m honoured to be on court with them, but if you don’t show up they’re going to take it, just like they always do.”
With his 95-minute win over Rublev, Kovacevic climbs to No. 75 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, three spots off his career high. The 26-year-old produced a gutsy display throughout his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Rublev, but was particularly fired up in the second set. Kovacevic saved a break point with a big second serve in the ninth game before reeling off four of the last five points on return in the following game to seal victory.

Last year in Montpellier, Jesper lost in the opening qualifying round against Blanchet in straight sets.
Felix Auger-Aliassime has won four of his last five matches. A few weeks ago in Adelaide, Felix won the title, winning against Korda in the final in three tight sets. With this title, Felix now has six ATP titles under his name. This week in Montpellier, Felix won the second-round match against Cazaux in straight sets. He trailed 2-5 in the second set tiebreak but turned it around. Today, in the quarterfinals, Auger-Aliassime won against Bu in straight sets. Last year in Montpellier, Felix reached the semifinals, losing against Bublik in three tight sets.
Best Bet to Make
According to the bookies, de Jong is the big underdog in this matchup, but we disagree. Jesper showed great tennis this week in Montpellier. We expect him to put up a big fight against Felix. This will be an interesting match that could go either way.
That being said, de Jong covering the games handicap is a value bet.

Today, in the quarterfinals, Basilashvili retired in the first set against Rublev. It is his second appearance in Montpellier.
Aleksandar Kovacevic has won five straight matches. Kovacevic won the Challenger title two weeks ago in Oeiras, defeating Piros in the final in straight sets. In Montpellier, Kovacevic successfully qualified for the main draw tournament. As we predicted, Aleksandar defeated Goffin in three tight sets in the opening main draw round. Kovacevic won against Bellucci in three sets, as we had predicted in the second round. Alexander Bublik also had no answer for Aleksandar’s game. Kovacevic won in straight sets, as we had predicted. It is his first appearance in Montpellier.

The second seed at the indoor hard-court ATP 250 defeated Buyunchaokete 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals for a second consecutive year. By advancing to the last four in Montpellier, Auger-Aliassime joins Jannik Sinner (33) and Carlos Alcaraz (31) as the only players born since 2000 to reach 30 tour-level semi-finals. The 24-year-old, who won his sixth ATP Tour title at the Adelaide International earlier this month, improves to 8-2 in 2025.
“My game is more disciplined,” said Auger-Aliassime when asked about his new approach to the 2025 campaign. “I feel like last year I had some brilliant shots but also moments where I made a lot of mistakes. But now, two straight-sets wins, [I am] more solid and I am happy with that because that’s the goal. Hopefully I go one more step and get to the finals on Sunday.”

With his 51st indoor win since the start of the 2022 season, Auger-Aliassime extended his Tour lead ahead of Holger Rune (42) and Sinner (40). The former World No. 6 was imperious on serve throughout his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Buyunchaokete, during which he won 86 per cent (30/35) points behind his first delivery, according to Infosys ATP Stats, and fired 11 aces.
Auger-Aliassime will next face Jesper de Jong, who stunned countryman and fifth seed Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(5), 6-4 after one hour, 46 minutes to reach his maiden tour-level semi-final.
“We know each other well, it’s never easy… but I was very hungry to play him,” said De Jong, the No. 131 in the PIF ATP Rankings. “He is No. 1 in the Netherlands, the pressure is on him. I had nothing to lose so I was ready and looking forward to it.”
Competing in his first ATP Tour quarter-final, De Jong showed few signs of nerves. The 24-year-old saved each of the six break points he faced in the first set before producing a stunning backhand pass at 3/3 in the tie-break to move clear. In the second set, an out-of-sorts Griekspoor was unable to limit his unforced error count, which ultimately rose to 30.
On the other side of the draw, Andrey Rublev advanced to the semi-finals after Nikoloz Basilashvili was forced to retire with the top seed leading 5-2 in the first set. With his second win of the 2025 season, the 27-year-old advanced to his 42nd ATP Tour semi-final, and first since reaching the ATP Masters 1000 Montreal final in August last year.
“I played many great matches with Niko, he won many of them and I won some of them as well,” said Rublev, who now leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 4-3. “He’s a really great player and a really nice person, so I hope that it’s nothing serious and that he will recover for the next week.”

With a title run in Montpellier, Rublev would become the fourth man to win his first 17 tour-level titles all at different events in ATP Tour history (since 1990) after Medvedev (20), Stich (18) and Ivanisevic (17).
Rublev will next face American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic, who upset two-time champion Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-2. Kovacevic, 26, won 84 per cent of his first-serve points and fended off all eight break points he faced. The Dutchman overcame countryman Botic van de Zandschulp 7-5, 6-3 in a topsy-turvy 95-minute battle. Now with 24 indoor wins since the start of the 2023 season, Griekspoor trails only the No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Jannik Sinner (33) for most on the ATP Tour.
“I’ve always played well here, felt well… I like the conditions,” said Griekspoor. “I like a roof above my head, the same as Rotterdam next week. It’s perfect for me to be here, first win of the season, a great day so far.
“It’s very not easy to play each other, we practise together every day when we’re back home in Amsterdam. We know each other better than anyone else I guess, so that also makes it very tricky. I don’t think we played our best match, but that’s what happens when you know each other so well.”
Griekspoor squandered a break lead in both sets, but made amends with his clinical performance at the net. The fifth seed won 18 of 24 points when at the forecourt, according to Infosys ATP Stats, en route to improving to 2-1 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Van de Zandschulp.
Awaiting the Dutchman in the second round is three-time champion Richard Gasquet, who prevailed 6-3, 6-2 in an all-French clash with Adrian Mannarino. It was a record-extending 29th main-draw win in Montpellier for Gasquet, who has announced he will retire after Roland Garros this year.
“It’s always special to play against a friend. We are used to it. I’ve played many times against a French player,” said Gasquet after his 76-minute victory. “It’s a little bit different, and my last time here in Montpellier so of course I’m really happy to win.
“I hope Adrian will win in the future, but I’m really happy with how I played. It’s really important for me to play another match. I really like to play here, I won many times, so I’m really happy to play here again.”
In other action in Montpellier, Christopher Eubanks battled past qualifier Alibek Kachmazov 7-5 6-4 to set up a meeting with top seed Andrey Rublev. Frenchman Constant Lestienne rallied back from 2-5 in the second set to defeat Borna Coric 6-3, 7-5, and Mattia Bellucci defeated 2018 champion Lucas Pouille 6-4, 6-4. In an all-French matchup, seventh seed Arthur Rinderknech eliminated Harold Mayot 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-1 in two hours and 10 minutes.
Tallon Griekspoor put on a dominant display as he powered past fellow Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round of the Open Sud de France in Montpellier.
