On the evening of 21 December 1988, Jim and Jane Swire were preparing for Christmas in the warm glow of their home in the sleepy Worcestershire village of Finstall. They had just waved goodbye to their 23-year-old daughter Flora, who was jetting off to New York to visit her boyfriend for the holidays. Shortly after 7pm, a newsflash appeared on the Swires’ television, announcing that a plane had gone down over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. From that point on, their lives were never the same again.

Flora was one of 270 people killed in what remains, to this day, the deadliest terror attack ever to have taken place in Britain. Thirty-eight minutes after Pan Am flight 103 took off from Heathrow on its journey to New York, a bomb on board exploded, killing every passenger and crew member as well as 11 people on the ground below.

Now, just over 36 years on, a new Sky Atlantic drama, Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, tells the story of Jim’s search for answers to what happened that night – a quest that for the former GP, now 88 years old, continues to this day. Colin Firth, who plays Jim, his face permanently crumpled in anguish, has said he was “just overwhelmed by the relentless sadness of Jim’s journey”. The show, which has been years in the making and spans several decades, co-stars Catherine McCormack as Jim’s wife Jane, who has remained by her husband’s side even when his obsession with the case threatened to tear what was left of their family apart.

The case of the Lockerbie bombing continues to throw up more questions than answers. Only one man has ever been convicted of the attack – the Libyan national Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, in 2001. But several concerns have emerged in the years since the trial. We now know that the US government paid two central witnesses millions to give evidence in court. And a fragment of electronic circuit board, a key piece of forensic evidence in the case, has also been discredited by electronic experts – with theories that it was actually planted by the CIA even being raised in the Commons, and an anonymous Scottish police chief claiming the evidence was fabricated.

Megrahi – who served eight and a half years of his life sentence in prison before he was released back to Libya on compassionate grounds in 2009 – maintained his innocence until his death in 2012 from prostate cancer. While in prison, he developed an unconventional (and controversial) friendship with Jim, who had taken to visiting him, and as a result Jim slowly became convinced that Megrahi had been framed. Jim had initially been instrumental in securing Megrahi’s extradition to the UK – even flying to Libya to persuade Colonel Gaddafi to send Megrahi to trial – but as his doubts grew, he ended up campaigning for the Libyan’s retrial and release.

Jim’s hypothesis (regarded by some as a conspiracy theory) is that it was Iran that was really behind the attack, planting the bomb at Heathrow in revenge after a US missile cruiser in the Gulf shot down an Iranian commercial plane full of innocent civilians earlier that year during the Iran-Iraq war. He believes Megrahi was used as a political pawn, by the US and the UK; it has been speculated that, back then, it suited both countries to lay the blame on Libya in order to take the heat off Iran, which each government needed on side during the conflict with Iraq.

To this day, American and British governments maintain that the bomb originated in Malta and was flown to Heathrow as part of a Libyan plot, potentially in retaliation for the US bombing of Libya’s capital, Tripoli, in 1986. Another Libyan national, Abu Agila Masud, who is alleged to have helped make the bomb, is to go on trial in the US in May 2025 facing three charges, which he denies.

Firth, speaking at a screening for the series, said the script instantly had an “emotional impact” on him. “It was less the legal investigation or thriller element of it, and far more how it made me feel, seeing this representation of Jim and Jane and their family, and their journey of having carried this for so long, and still carrying it.”

Firth was stunned by how many “twist and turns” there were in the story the drama presents; how many times Jim would be going down one line of inquiry only to be diverted and have his theory “flipped on its head, having committed himself so completely to the pursuit of a solution”. He was in awe of Jim’s “courage and integrity in allowing that diversion to take place, and not to cling to his original theory… He let evidence and facts speak to him, even if that meant profoundly changing course. That really struck me.”

Firth as Jim Swire, who became obsessed with the case

The actor met with the Swires at their home, where he realised the extent of Jim’s “alertness and intellectual agility” and “what a huge thing to live up to this was going to be”. “You always feel a bit out of your depth when you start a job, but this really felt way out of my depth,” he says.

Jim’s relentlessness was inspiring to Firth, but it’s also the characteristic that nearly broke his grieving family. In the drama, he becomes increasingly fixated and isolated, holed up in his office, perpetually unravelling a spider’s web of information, and is practically absent for the big milestones in his other children’s lives. At one point, McCormack’s Jane announces she wants to move out of the Finstall home where they found out Flora had died. “I want to be around life, not death,” she says. “Not death, every single minute of the day.”

And it’s not only Jim’s family who want to move on. In one scene, journalist Murray Guthrie (Sam Troughton), who’s been helping Jim dig deeper into the case, tells him: “Most people think [Megrahi] did it, and want to forget.”

Screenwriter David Harrower made sure to portray the anger many of the bereaved families felt towards Jim, and the fact that many of them saw him as a crank conspiracy theorist. “It’s important to say that there are other beliefs,” he says. “We’re not just following one man or one family who believe a certain thing. We’ve got other people in it, and it was important to show that there are other sides to this. We’re not just propagating one way of thinking.”

The drama, which is based on Jim’s book, Lockerbie: A Father’s Search for Justice, has already been condemned by the US-based campaign group Victims of Pan Am Flight 103, who raised concerns that it will promote a “false narrative”.

This division between the Swires and the other bereaved families has meant that their grief has been lonelier than it might have been had Jim just accepted Megrahi’s conviction. We see Jane experience terrifying flashbacks and nightmares. And there’s an extraordinarily potent scene where she painstakingly counts out the 15 seconds for which Flora might have been aware that she was falling through the sky to her death.

“Jane would read up about the disintegration of aircraft,” says McCormack, “and the last moments, potentially, of someone’s life if they were conscious. And so I kept that with me.”

Firth says the counting moment “changes the scene on a sixpence because, up to that point, my character is getting quite overwrought and frustrated… and it just cuts through that.” McCormack watched lots of footage of Jane in news clips and documentaries from over the years, in an attempt to capture her “dignity, grace, strength and, of course, vulnerability”.

Lockerbie, says Harrower, left “a real scar on the Scottish psyche”. Newborn babies fell from the plane. One 14-year-old Lockerbie boy lost both his parents and his little sister when the wreckage landed on their home. But still, there is a danger of it being forgotten. At one point in the drama, when it enters the 2010s, we watch Jim jolt with the realisation that a young Scottish woman he comes across, working at a café, has no idea what the Lockerbie disaster was.

But the creators of this series hope that telling this story through the medium of drama will put Lockerbie, and the search for the truth, back on the agenda. It’s airing exactly a year and a day after 2024’s Mr Bates vs The Post Office, after all, which has become one of the most influential British TV series of all time. “I feel that there has been endless discussion about this topic, but somehow with drama, you can find a fresh perspective on something,” says executive producer Gareth Neame. “We would like to feel that we have shone a light on this murky, murky subject, in a way that has never been adequately done before.”

‘Lockerbie: A Search for Truth’ airs at 9pm on Sky Atlantic on 2 January

Colin Firth on Lockerbie: The new TV drama about the UK’s deadliest terror attack: ‘It felt way out of my depth’

Renowned actor Colin Firth is set to star in the upcoming TV drama “Lockerbie,” which tells the story of the devastating terrorist attack that took place in 1988. Firth, known for his roles in films such as “The King’s Speech” and “Pride and Prejudice,” opened up about his experience working on the project, revealing that it was a challenging and emotional journey for him.

In an interview, Firth shared his thoughts on taking on the role of a grieving father who lost his daughter in the Lockerbie bombing. He expressed that the subject matter was intense and deeply emotional, and that he felt a sense of responsibility to do justice to the real-life events and the people affected by them.

“It felt way out of my depth,” Firth admitted. “But I knew that this was a story that needed to be told, and I wanted to do my part in bringing it to life on screen.”

The Lockerbie bombing, which claimed the lives of 270 people, including 11 on the ground, remains one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in UK history. The TV drama aims to shed light on the impact of the tragedy on the victims’ families and the wider community, while also exploring the investigation and aftermath of the attack.

Firth’s commitment to portraying the emotional complexities of the story is a testament to his dedication as an actor. As audiences eagerly anticipate the release of “Lockerbie,” it is clear that Firth’s performance will be a powerful and moving tribute to the lives lost in this tragic event.

6 shot in ‘brazen and heartless attack’ in NY; mother used as human shield: police

A 40-year-old woman was shot in the stomach while a suspect used her as a human shield during a shooting in New York, according to authorities.

The New York Police Department said the woman’s 12-year-old daughter, as well as four other people, were also hurt in the “brazen and heartless attack.”

Interim Chief of Patrol John Chell said surveillance video shows gunfire erupting outside a convenience store in The Bronx Monday night shortly before 5 p.m.

A bullet hit the woman in the belly, said Chell. He added that her daughter was shot in the leg, while four men, who ranged in age from 18 to 21, were shot in their arms and legs.

“If you can imagine, (the) mom and daughter are up against the counter and the two intended targets come in and bump into them, and then turn the mother around as they’re being shot at,” he said, adding that police believe people who were gathered in front of the store — and then ran into the store when shots were fired — were the intended targets.

Chell said police are searching for two suspects in connection to the shooting. He described them both as Black men. While one was seen wearing a black Nike sweatsuit, the other was wearing a grey hoodie.

“At this time, we do not have a motive for this shooting,” Chell said.

He urged anyone who witnessed the shooting contact police at 1-800-577-TIPS.

In a shocking and tragic incident in New York, six people were shot in what authorities are calling a “brazen and heartless attack.” Among the victims was a mother who was used as a human shield during the shooting, according to police.

The incident took place in a residential neighborhood, where a group of individuals opened fire on a gathering of people. The mother, who was reportedly trying to protect her children, was shot multiple times while shielding them from the gunfire.

Police are currently investigating the motive behind the attack and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The victims are being treated for their injuries, with some in critical condition.

This senseless act of violence has shocked the community and serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and unity in the face of such tragedies. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

Erik Spoelstra, Miami Heat Share Support for New Orleans After Terror Attack

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra shared his support for the New Orleans community ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Pelicans.

Spoelstra called Wednesday morning’s terror attack “terrifying” and “horrifying.” An Army veteran drove his truck through a Bourbon Street crowd, killing at least 15 and injuring 30.

“Until we all find out more details, you pray for all the families and everybody that’s experiencing loss,” Spoelstra said. “The unknown, also, is terrifying.”

The Heat held a pregame moment of silence before Wednesday’s game. Miami also honored former president Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at 100.

Pelicans coach Willie Green told reporters he learned of the terrorist attack from his father. Green said he was “devastated” and bemoaned the “senseless act of violence.”

“Schools, churches, people should be able to go out and have a good time and walk the streets,” Green said. “It’s devastating. And I can only imagine what those families are going through, what they have to deal with now for the rest of their lives.”

The Pelicans play their next home game Friday against the Wizards. It is unknown if that game will be postponed; the Sugar Bowl moved Wednesday’s College Football Playoffs quarterfinals showdown to Thursday afternoon.

Pelicans senior vice president Swin Cash addressed the terror attack on X (formerly Twitter) earlier Wednesday.

“Thank you to everyone who reached out with calls and texts—my family & I are safe, but our hearts are heavy,” Cash wrote. “The senseless evil targeting innocent lives is devastating.”

“Please pray for the victims, their loved ones, and the entire NO community,” she added.

Josh Hart deeply saddened by ‘tragic’ New Orleans attack

Josh Hart spent 2 ¹/₂ seasons with the Pelicans, and the outspoken Knicks guard expressed sadness following the fatal attack early in the morning on New Year’s Day in New Orleans.

At least 15 people were killed and injured dozens when a driver rammed a pickup truck into a crowd along Bourbon Street in the French Quarter before being killed in a firefight with police.

“Obviously, our hearts and prayers go out to the people there that were affected,” Hart said before Wednesday’s game against the Jazz at the Garden. “I loved my time in New Orleans. Bourbon Street, spent my fair share of time on Bourbon Street. So your heart goes out to everyone there, and your prayers goes out to everyone there.

“New Orleans always has had a special spot in my heart. It’s just tragic what happened.”

Hart, who registered his third triple-double this season in Monday’s road win over the Wizards, was traded by the Lakers to the Pelicans in the 2019 Anthony Davis blockbuster before getting dealt again to the Trail Blazers at the 2022 trade deadline.

The Knicks acquired the former Villanova star in February of 2023 from Portland in exchange for Cam Reddish and a first-round draft pick.

Knicks forward Matt Ryan also appeared in 28 games for the Pelicans last season, and he spent training camp with them earlier this season before he was waived and signed by the Knicks as a free agent.

“For sure, it’s tough to see because New Orleans, for people that don’t know New Orleans, it’s just so vibrant, so lively. It’s just a tragedy,” Hart added. “Bourbon Street, it’s always crazy. People travel to go there, to get there to celebrate New Year’s, Mardi Gras. Bourbon Street is like a melting pot for all different kinds of people, from races to religion to everything.”

New Orleans eventually recovered from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Hart noted, “it’s a resilient city, and they’ll get through this, too. But like I said, just a tragedy.”

“Praying for our city and those impacted by the tragic events that took place early this morning,” Pelicans star Zion Williamson posted on social media.

The Pelicans and the Saints issued a joint statement saying the two area franchises are “deeply saddened by the tragic events” that occurred in the early morning hours.

“Our hearts go out to all the victims and their families during this difficult time,” the joint statement read. “We express our deepest gratitude to the first responders who acted swiftly and bravely on the scene.

“New Orleans is a city built on resilience, and this heartbreaking event reminds us of the importance of coming together to support one another to honor those affected, and to work toward healing as a community. In times of tragedy, the New Orleans community has always shown extraordinary courage and compassion, and we are certain that this time will be no different.”

New Orleans Pelicans player Josh Hart has expressed his deep sadness and shock following the “tragic” attack that took place in the city recently. The attack, which left multiple people injured and one person dead, has rocked the community and left many reeling.

In a statement released on social media, Hart expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, and urged for unity and peace during this difficult time. He also called for an end to senseless violence and for the community to come together to support one another.

  • Is Sugar Bowl cancelled? Georgia-Notre Dame game postponed after New Orleans truck-ramming attack

Is Sugar Bowl cancelled? Georgia-Notre Dame game postponed after New Orleans truck-ramming attack

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The annual Sugar Bowl has been postponed one day in the wake of the truck-ramming attack early Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street that left at least 15 dead and dozens injured.

The suspect was killed after allegedly opening fire on police officers with an assault rifle. The FBI is investigating the attack as an “act of terrorism.”

Law enforcement said the attack occurred at 3:15 a.m. local time, about 16 hours before the Georgia Bulldogs were expected to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoffs at Caesars Superdome.

There were discussions Wednesday morning about possibly postponing or canceling the Sugar Bowl — a college football game played annually at New Orleans on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day since 1935 — due to the number of resources needed to secure the venue, according to sources briefed on the discussions.

Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams told ABC News Wednesday afternoon that the game, set to kick off Jan. 1 at 7:45 p.m. CT, would be postponed by one day with an official announcement to follow.

Both schools issued statements, offering condolences to the victims and their families.

“We are horrified and saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day in New Orleans,” the University of Georgia wrote in a statement on X. “University personnel are working to determine if any UGA students, faculty, staff, alumni or fans were among the victims. We offer our deepest condolences to all the victims and their families, and we stand in solidarity with the New Orleans community.”

“Our prayers are with the family members and loved ones of all those impacted by the terrible attack in New Orleans early this morning,” the Rev. Robert A. Dowd, president of Notre Dame, said in a statement. “We also pray for all those injured and extend our deepest gratitude to the brave first responders who risked their lives to protect others. To be in solidarity with those who suffer is to exemplify the spirit of Notre Dame. Today, we are in solidarity with all those impacted by this tragedy.”

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the attack on Bourbon Street occurred as the department was “staffed 100%” for New Year’s Eve and the Sugar Bowl.

“The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the terrible events from early this morning,” Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said in a statement, according to ABC News local affiliate WJCL. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are in ongoing discussions with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels and will communicate further details as they become available.”

Former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial told ABC News’ Diane Macedo that he was confident law enforcement could ensure security for the Sugar Bowl and that the expense on people who traveled into town for the game had to be weighed.

“If there is thought to postpone the game for a day or two, one thing that is implicated is you have visitors from Georgia, visitors from Notre Dame, who are there, who have paid to come to New Orleans, who are staying at hotel rooms at some expense to themselves. You’ve got to weigh the impact on them, as well,” he said.

The Sugar Bowl, scheduled to take place in New Orleans on January 1st, is not cancelled, but the Georgia-Notre Dame game has been postponed following a tragic truck-ramming attack in the city. The incident, which occurred in the downtown area, has left many questioning the safety and security of hosting such a large-scale event in the wake of such violence.

While the Sugar Bowl itself has not been cancelled, the decision to postpone the Georgia-Notre Dame game highlights the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of athletes, staff, and fans. It is a reminder that in the face of tragedy, sports must take a backseat to ensuring the protection of everyone involved.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time, and we hope for a swift resolution to the situation in New Orleans. Stay tuned for updates on the status of the Georgia-Notre Dame game and any further developments regarding the Sugar Bowl.

  • Sugar Bowl between Georgia, Notre Dame postponed to Thursday after New Orleans attack

Sugar Bowl between Georgia, Notre Dame postponed to Thursday after New Orleans attack

NEW ORLEANS – The Sugar Bowl has been postponed from Wednesday night to Thursday night, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams told ABC News.

The College Football Game game between Georgia and Notre Dame was set to kickoff tonight in at the Ceasar’s Superdome in New Orleans where police remain focused on securing the French Quarter after the vehicle ramming attack.

Earlier on Wednesday, authorities locked down the Superdome as law enforcement sweeped the downtown area for explosive devices.

A student at the University of Georgia was critically injured in the attack and is receiving medical treatment, according to UGA president Jere Morehead.

Authorities have identified Shamsud Din Jabbar as the suspected driver of a pickup truck sped through a crowd of pedestrians gathered on New Orleans’ bustling French Quarter district early on New Year’s Day, killing 15 people and injuring more than 20 other revelers.

Jabbar, 42, is a U.S. citizen from Texas, according to the FBI. He drove a F150 that he rented in Texas on a carsharing app, according to authorities.

“An ISIS flag was located in the vehicle and the FBI is working to determine the subject’s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations,” the FBI said in a statement. Weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter. The FBI’s Special Agent Bomb Technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any ofthese devices are viable and they will work to render those devices safe. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism.”

Two police officers were also injured in a shootout with the suspect, who authorities said died after that firefight.

The attack occurred on Bourbon Street, known worldwide as one of the largest destinations for New Year’s Eve parties, and with crowds in the city in anticipation of the Sugar Bowl college football playoff game later Wednesday at the nearby Superdome.

The truck used in the attack had Texas plates and branding from a Houston-area dealership. ABC News reported that the Ford F150 truck used in the attack was rented through the Turo app – a carsharing company.

Truck owner Rodrigo Diaz told ABC’s Chris Looft that he rented this truck to an individual through Turo and that he is currently talking to the FBI, declining to comment further.

His wife, Dora Diaz, told ABC News they are devastated – saying through tears “My husband rents cars through the Turo app. I can’t tell you anything else. I’m here with my kids, and this is devastating.”

Here’s what we know about the attack:

    What happened?

Police said the driver sped through a crowd along Bourbon Street around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday as revelers had gathered to celebrate the New Year. Ten people were killed and 33 were injured and taken to five local hospitals. Two police officers wounded in the shootout with the suspect were in stable condition.

Who is the driver and what was his motive?

The FBI said the driver was 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas.

A flag representing the Islamic State group was found in the truck and the FBI is trying to determine if he was associated with any terrorist organizations, the agency said in a statement.

The FBI is investigating the attack as an act of terrorism.

Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick said the driver was “hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did” and he tried “to run over as many people as he could.”

What have authorities found in their investigation?

Weapons and a possible explosive device were found in the pickup truck and other possible explosive devices were found elsewhere in the French Quarter, the FBI said.

    Who was in the crowd?

Authorities said Bourbon Street was filled with revelers toasting the start of 2025 and attending New Year’s Eve parties when the attack occurred. Crowds in New Orleans have been ballooning in anticipation of Wednesday night’s Sugar Bowl college football playoff game between No. 2 Georgia and No. 3 Notre Dame. Officials said that game would go on as scheduled.

What protections are there for pedestrians on Bourbon Street?

City documents show New Orleans has been in the midst of a major project to remove and replace post-like barriers called bollards designed to prevent vehicle attacks along Bourbon Street. That project began in November and involves replacing old bollards with new removable stainless steel bollards.

Have there been similar deadly attacks involving vehicles?

Wednesday’s attack in New Orleans is the latest example of a vehicle being used as a weapon around the world to carry out mass violence. The trend has alarmed law enforcement officials because such attacks can be difficult to protect against. Last month, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor plowed into a Christmas market teeming with holiday shoppers in the German city of Magdeburg, killing four women and a 9-year-old boy.

New Orleans attack updates: 10 dead, dozens injured after vehicle plows into crowd on Bourbon Street

A suspect who was “hell-bent” on killing as many people as possible drove a rented pickup truck around barricades and plowed his vehicle through a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans at a high rate of speed, leaving at least 10 dead and injuring dozens of others early Wednesday, city and federal officials said.

After mowing down numerous people over a three-block stretch on the famed thoroughfare while firing shots into the crowd, the suspect allegedly got out of the truck wielding an assault rifle and opened fire on police officers, law enforcement officials briefed on the incident told ABC News. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect who was not immediately identified, sources said. At least two police officers were shot and wounded, authorities said.

Improvised explosive devices found in and around the scene on Bourbon Street were apparently found to be viable and investigators were looking for more in the city’s French Quarter, multiple law enforcement sources tell ABC News.

Investigators are working to determine whether the deceased suspect entered the country recently and whether he had a connection to ISIS, law enforcement sources told ABC News. It appears that the truck the suspect rented was spotted in Texas on Tuesday, but it was not clear if the suspect was in the vehicle at the time, according to a source citing preliminary law enforcement information.

Jason Williams, the district attorney of Orleans Parrish, which includes New Orleans, told ABC News that investigators are conducting a grid search to determine if other explosive devices were planted. He also said investigators are probing whether the suspect acted alone or had help from others in planning and executing the attack.

Williams also said an investigation is underway on whether barricades along Bourbon Street were still up at the time of the attack.

Investigators have a possible name for the suspect they are working to confirm, sources told ABC News, adding it is a common name.

    Investigated as terror attack

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell described the horrific incident a “terrorist attack” and the FBI said it was being investigated as an act of terror. The bloodshed comes on the heels of a deadly vehicle ramming attack in Germany. Fears of such attacks were a growing concern among law enforcement as well as attacks by lone actors at winter holiday events.

Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the driver had attempted to kill as many people as possible. The truck used in the attack appeared to be a F-150 Lightning, an electric vehicle. A black flag appeared to be attached to the vehicle, but its significance was not immediately known.

By the time the melee had ended, at least 35 people were injured, New Orleans police and city officials said. Most of the victims appeared to be local, officials said.

“He was hell-bent on creating the carnage that he did,” Kirkpatrick said at a news conference early Wednesday.

The New Orleans Police Department said the attack occurred despite the force being “staffed 100%” for New Year’s Eve and the Sugar Bowl, a college football game played annually on New Year’s Day. An additional 300 officers were on duty from partner agencies, the police department said.

Despite discussions about canceling or postponing the Sugar Bowl, the game was expected to be played Wednesday evening, sources briefed said. Some events and parties around the game were canceled, however.

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the attack and has been in touch with Cantrell to offer support, according to the White House.

“I will continue to receive updates throughout the day, and I will have more to say as we have further information to share,” Biden said in a statement. “In the meantime, my heart goes out to the victims and their families who were simply trying to celebrate the holiday. There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation’s communities.”

President-elect Donald Trump posted a statement on his Truth Social platform, saying, Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!”

Local authorities asked the FBI for assistance early on Wednesday, a senior federal law enforcement source told ABC News. A command center was being set up, the source said. The FBI was set to lead the investigation.

    ‘Horrific act of violence’

“A horrific act of violence took place on Bourbon Street earlier this morning,” Gov. Jeff Landry said, adding that his family was praying for the victims and first responders.

Emergency vehicles are seen near Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025.

    WGNO

Witness Dan McFee said he had just walked out of his hotel to get an Uber and was standing on Canal Street near Bourbon Street, when he heard squealing tires and turned to see the white pickup truck turning right on Bourbon Street and heading right toward him and a female friend.

He said he grabbed his friend and pulled her out of the way as the truck sped by. McFee said he was struck either by the vehicle or debris and that he and his friend were knocked in the air and landed on the sidewalk. Moments later, he said he heard gunshots.

Asked if he saw the driver’s face, McFee said, “All I could remember, and it’s replaying in my head, is seeing the front of the truck coming at us.”

McFee said he and his friend suffered bumps and bruises in the incident.

Witness Jimmy Cothran of New Orleans told ABC News that he and a friend were walking on Bourbon Street when the truck attack began. He said they ducked into a bar and within minutes, four frantic women pushed through security, rushed into the bar and hid under tables.

“When we got on the balcony, what we saw was insanity,” Cothran, a certified emergency medical technician, said. “I mean it was something out of a movie, the graphic nature of it. It was unbelievable. We instantly counted I’d saw 10 bodies, six clearly graphically deceased and the others yelling with one around. Everyone had just cleared the street completely.”

Cothran said he tried to go out and help the injured but was stopped by security.

Another witness, who requested to be identified only as Paul S., told ABC News he was startled awake by the sound of what he initially thought was fireworks.

“Around 3:15 [a.m.], we heard a ‘pop, pop, pop, pop’ sound followed by a sound that sounded like fireworks going off, like big fireworks all at once,” Paul S. said. “Then it turned out that was the crash.”

He said he looked outside his hotel window, he saw a chaotic scene with bodies strewn on the street below.

“What I was was if you can imagine a street with brick and whatnot littered all around the sidewalk, and then there were bodies laid up next to garbage cans and people rushing to give aid,” Paul S. said.

He said he observed a man who had been thrown from his wheelchair lying on the ground next to the truck involved in in the attack writhing in pain.

“There was also a body underneath a scissor lift,” Paul S. said.

    Truck rented through app

The Ford F-150 Lightning truck used in the attack was apparently rented through the Turo app — a car sharing company, according to Rodrigo Diaz, the owner of the truck. Diaz told ABC News he rented the truck to an individual through the app and is currently talking to the FBI. He declined further comment.

Diaz wife, Dora Diaz, told ABC News that she and her husband are devastated by the incident.

“My husband rents cars through the Turo app. I can’t tell you anything else. I’m here with my kids, and this is devastating,” Dora Diaz said.

Preliminary information put together by law enforcement indicates the truck apparently involved in the New Orleans attack was observed Tuesday in north Harris County, Texas, a source briefed on the investigation told ABC Houston station KTRK. The truck was seen in Harris County around 10:15 a.m. and again 11:10 a.m., the source said. Just after noon on Tuesday, the truck was spotted in Baytown, Texas, heading east on Interstate 10 in the direction of New Orleans, according to the source.

Law enforcement has not said whether the suspected attacker was in the vehicle when it was spotted in Texas.

    Deploying ‘every available resource

Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed the FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism. He said the the Justice Department’s National Security Division, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana are working with local law enforcement and “will deploy every available resource to conduct this investigation.”

“The country woke up this morning to news of a terrible tragedy in New Orleans that killed at least 10 people and injured many more,” Garland said in a statement. “My heart is broken for those who began their year by learning people they love were killed in this horrific attack, and my prayers are with the dozens who were injured, including the New Orleans Police Department Officers who risked their lives to save others.”

Leading up to the holidays, federal law enforcement and intelligence had warned police around the country that low-tech vehicle ramming was a key area of concern and that they needed to prepare — and that was before the German Christmas market attack on Dec. 20, in which five people were killed and hundreds were injured.

In a Dec. 9 assessment for the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration, federal and local agencies wrote: “We remain concerned about the use of vehicle ramming against high-profile outdoor events…Vehicle ramming has become a recurring tactic employed by threat actors in the West, marked by a continued interest by (terrorists, extremists) and lone offenders in targeting crowded pedestrian areas.”

“There are 30 injured patients that have been transported by NOEMS and 10 fatalities,” the city said, using an acronym for the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services.

The police later said at least 35 people were injured and taken to five local hospitals — University Medical Center, Touro Hospital, East Jefferson General Hospital, Ochsner Medical Center Jefferson Campus and Ochsner Baptist Campus.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Our hearts are heavy as we bring you the latest updates on the tragic incident that occurred on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. At least 10 people have been confirmed dead and dozens more are injured after a vehicle plowed into a crowd of pedestrians.

Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the attack and have not ruled out the possibility of it being a deliberate act. The driver of the vehicle is in custody and is being questioned by police.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. #NewOrleansAttack #BourbonStreetAttack #PrayForNewOrleans

‘Pure evil’: politicians condemn New Orleans attack as White House offers support | New Orleans

Political reaction to the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans that is being investigated as a terrorist incident, came swiftly on Wednesday, with the White House saying that Joe Biden had been briefed by senior leadership at the FBI and by the leadership of the Department of Homeland Security.

The president also spoke by phone this morning with the New Orleans mayor, LaToya Cantrell, “to offer full federal support” according to the White House.

The attorney general Merrick Garland said that the FBI, the ATF, and prosecutors with the national security division and the local federal prosecutor’s office are all working on the terrorism case.

“My heart is broken for those who began their year by learning people they love were killed in this horrific attack,” Garland said. He vowed to “deploy every available resource to conduct this investigation”.

Donald Trump appeared to refer to the suspect, who was shot dead by police, as a foreign national. Police have not confirmed the suspect’s identity.

“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true,” the president-elect posted on his Truth Social network.

“The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before. Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!”

Troy Carter, the Democrat congressman whose 2nd district includes New Orleans, commended “the swift actions of the New Orleans Police Department and federal law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to neutralize the threat and secure the area”.

In a follow-up post on X, Carter said he hand spoken with the homeland security secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, and the White House regarding last night’s “unspeakable act of violence”.

“My heart is with the victims, their families, and everyone who witnessed this horrific attack during what should have been a joyful New Year’s celebration,” he added.

The House speaker, Mike Johnson, whose congressional district is west of New Orleans, said: “The vicious attack on innocent people celebrating the New Year in New Orleans early this morning was an act of pure evil, and justice must be swift for anyone who was involved.

“Please join us in praying for the victims, their families, and the first responders and investigators on the scene,” Johnson added in a statement on X.

The district attorney who represents New Orleans, Jason Williams, said law enforcement officers were “ready to deal with any event”. But the individual “had his mind set on hurting as many people as he could”. The police response, he added, “was swift and very overwhelming”.

Police in New Orleans said earlier that at least 10 people were killed and 35 more were injured after a man drove a pickup truck into crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans in the early hours of New Year’s Day, in what city officials called a deliberate attack.

The New Orleans police superintendent, Anne Kirkpatrick, said the man drove the truck at high speed into crowds around 3.15am, before crashing and opening fire. Two police officers were wounded and investigators said they had found what appeared to be improvised explosive devices in the vehicle.

“It was very intentional behavior. This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” Kirkpatrick said in a news conference Wednesday morning. “He was hellbent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.”

Williams said in a statement that the city “is incredibly resilient, but this morning our hearts break for the innocent lives devastated by this hateful act.”

Williams thanked first responders “that activated quickly to prevent further carnage and continue to work this scene” and requested that the public avoid the area as law enforcement “continue processing the very large crime scene”.

In the wake of the devastating attack in New Orleans, politicians from both sides of the aisle have come together to condemn the senseless violence and offer their support to the victims and their families. The White House has also pledged its full support in the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the heinous crime.

The attack, which left several people dead and many more injured, has been described as “pure evil” by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards. He vowed to do everything in his power to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.

Senator Bill Cassidy echoed Governor Edwards’ sentiments, calling the attack “an act of pure evil” and offering his condolences to the victims and their families. He also urged the community to come together in the face of such tragedy and support one another during this difficult time.

The White House has offered its full support to the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana in the aftermath of the attack. President Biden has directed federal agencies to provide any assistance necessary to help with the investigation and recovery efforts.

As the community mourns the loss of innocent lives and grapples with the aftermath of this horrific attack, politicians and leaders are coming together to stand in solidarity against such acts of violence. The outpouring of support and unity in the face of tragedy is a testament to the resilience and strength of the people of New Orleans.

HER REMARKS. THANK YOU. OKAY, JUST GIVE US JUST A LITTLE SPACE, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. THANK YOU. GOOD MORNING. FIRST OF ALL, WE DO KNOW THAT THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS WAS IMPACTED BY A TERRORIST ATTACK. THAT’S ALL. STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. YOU’LL HEAR MORE AFTER ME. HOWEVER, I HAVE BEEN IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE WHITE HOUSE, WITH GOVERNOR LANDRY. AND, OF COURSE, A UNIFIED COMMAND WHO IS PRESENT HERE. WHAT I’M ASKING AT THIS TIME ARE PRAYERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS DUE TO THIS TRAGEDY, IN ADDITION TO THAT, I’M ASKING THE PUBLIC TO STAY CLEAR OF EIGHT BLOCKS AROUND BOURBON STREET. STAY CLEAR FROM BOURBON STREET, EIGHT BLOCKS AROUND VERY ACTIVE, AND AGAIN A UNIFIED COMMAND IS IN PLACE RIGHT NOW. I’M GOING TO ASK CHIEF KIRKPATRICK TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE. YOU’RE THEN GOING TO HEAR FROM OUR AGENT IN CHARGE RELATIVE TO THE FBI. SO AT THIS TIME, CHIEF KIRKPATRICK, THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT. GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE. SO I’M GOING TO GIVE YOU AS MUCH OF THE INFORMATION I POSSIBLY CAN. WE ARE GOING TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE A COUPLE OF TIMES TODAY. SO WE WILL GIVE YOU JUST THE BASICS THIS MORNING. ALL RIGHT. WE HAD THIS EVENT STARTED AT ABOUT 315. IT DID INVOLVE A MAN DRIVING A PICKUP TRUCK DOWN BOURBON STREET AT A VERY FAST PACE. AND IT WAS VERY INTENTIONAL BEHAVIOR. THIS MAN WAS TRYING TO RUN OVER AS MANY PEOPLE AS HE POSSIBLY COULD. IT WAS NOT A DUI SITUATION. THIS IS A MORE COMPLEX AND MORE SERIOUS BASED ON THE INFORMATION WE HAVE RIGHT NOW. WITH RESPECT TO NUMBERS, WE HAVE RIGHT NOW. AND AS YOU ALREADY KNOW, THIS COULD CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE DAY. WE DO KNOW THAT THERE ARE 26 INJURED PEOPLE WHO ARE AT UMC HOSPITAL. WE KNOW WE HAVE FOUR. ATURO, FOUR AT OCHSNER BAPTIST, ONE AT TULANE. BUT EVEN AS I WAS WALKING OUT THE DOOR, I BELIEVE I HAVE AN UNCONFIRMED ADDITIONAL PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO OTHER AREA HOSPITALS, POSSIBLY ON THE EAST SIDE. BUT WE WILL GIVE YOU AS MANY CORRECT NUMBERS AS WE CAN AS THE DAY PROGRESSES. IT IS A VERY TRAGIC SITUATION FOR ME TO TELL YOU THAT WE KNOW WE HAVE TEN PEOPLE, THAT THIS MAN KILLED ON BOURBON STREET, THAT IS WHY WE DO NOT WANT ANYONE ON BOURBON STREET TODAY. WE HAVE INFORMATION TO A CERTAIN DEGREE OF THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THOSE WHO ARE IN THE HOSPITAL RIGHT NOW. WE DO NOT KNOW AT THIS POINT HOW MANY WOULD BE TOURISTS VERSUS LOCALS. BUT FROM THE INFORMATION I HAVE RIGHT NOW, IT SEEMS THE MAJORITY ARE LOCALS VERSUS TOURISTS. WHAT I ALSO CAN TELL YOU IS THAT THIS MAN, THIS PERPETRATOR, HE FIRED ON OUR OFFICERS FROM HIS VEHICLE WHEN HE CRASHED HIS VEHICLE. TWO OF OUR OFFICERS HAVE BEEN SHOT. THEY ARE STABLE AND WE WILL GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON THEM. I HAVE YET BEEN ABLE TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL. I WILL BE LEAVING HERE FOR US TO GO VISIT OUR OFFICERS. LAST NIGHT WE HAD OVER 300 OFFICERS OUT HERE AND BECAUSE OF THE INTENTIONAL MINDSET OF THIS PERPETRATOR WHO WENT AROUND OUR BARRICADES IN ORDER TO CONDUCT THIS, HE WAS HELL BENT ON CREATING THE CARNAGE AND THE DAMAGE THAT HE DID BECAUSE OF THE NATURE AND THE INDICES THAT WE HAVE ON THE SCENE, AND WE HAVE A ENOUGH INFORMATION THAT THE FBI WILL BE TAKING OVER THIS INVESTIGATION. AND WITH THAT, I AM GOING TO BE ASKING, THIS IS THE ASSISTANT AGENT IN CHARGE. THIS IS AGENT DUNCAN, SPECIAL AGENT DUNCAN, AND SHE HAS TAKEN OVER THIS CASE ON BEHALF OF US AND THE FBI. AS ALWAYS, WE WILL BE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ALL OF OUR PARTNERS. BUT, AGENT DUNCAN, IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A FEW WORDS FOR ME. THANK YOU. MA’AM. GOOD MORNING. MY NAME IS ALETHEA DUNCAN. I’M THE ASSISTANT SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE FOR FBI NEW ORLEANS. AS CHIEF KIRKPATRICK SAID, WE’LL BE TAKING OVER THE INVESTIGATIVE LEAD FOR THIS EVENT. THIS IS NOT A TERRORIST EVENT. WHAT IT IS RIGHT NOW, IS THERE IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES THAT WAS FOUND? AND WE ARE WORKING ON CONFIRMING IF THIS IS A VIABLE DEVICE OR NOT. AS CHIEF KIRKPATRICK SAID, WE’RE ASKING EVERYONE TO STAY AWAY FROM BOURBON STREET, SPECIFICALLY FROM CANAL STREET TO SAINT ANNE. THAT IS MY ASK. ONCE AGAIN, STAY AWAY FROM BOURBON STREET. CANAL STREET ALL THE WAY TO SAINT ANNE UNTIL WE CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT IS GOING ON. OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE YOU ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AT THE 11:11 A.M. PRESS CONFERENCE. THERE’S SO MUCH TO ENJOY ABOUT NEW ORLEANS, AND WE ARE GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR ROOTS AND THE SUPERDOME ARE SAFE TODAY FOR THE GAME. AND YET WE WE HAD THIS TRAGIC EVENT AND WE’RE SORRY AGAIN, TO EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY, BUT WE DO WANT YOU TO GO ABOUT THE DAY, AS WE SAY, JUST STAY AWAY FROM BOURBON, OKAY? LIBRARY ON THE DEVICE. FBI sweeping New Orleans French Quarter after intentional attack

FBI sweeping French Quarter, Bourbon Street for explosive devices

BEFORE WE DO, LET’S GO BACK TO FLETCHER, WHERE THAT IED APPARENTLY EITHER JUST WENT OFF OR WAS DETONATED IN THE FRENCH QUARTER. FLETCHER, WALK US THROUGH AGAIN WHAT YOU HEARD, BECAUSE YOU DID HEAR SOME TYPE OF EXPLOSION THERE IN THE FRENCH QUARTER. WE DID, TRAVERS, AND I’M GETTING A LITTLE CLOSER RIGHT NOW. SORRY TO BUG YOU ALL AS YOU WAKE UP. I’M FLETCHER. WE’RE ON LIVE TV RIGHT NOW. YOU ALL LIVE HERE RIGHT NOW. WE’RE TRAVERS, WE’RE ON ORLEANS BETWEEN DAUPHINE AND BOURBON. I’M FLETCHER. WHAT WAS YOUR NAME? BRIAN. BRIAN? YEP. GOOD TO MEET YOU. SO AGAIN, JUST DRIVERS AS WE WATCH IT HERE. WE HEARD FIRE IN THE HOLE AND THEN THERE WAS A SMALL EXPLOSION. YES, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I HEARD. AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I KNOW. RIGHT. IT WAS MORE THAN LIKELY THEY WERE BLOWING UP WITH WATER CANNONS, SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES AND OUR BACKPACKS, THAT SORT OF THING, UP AND DOWN. AND THAT’S WHAT WE HEARD, TOO. I JUST WANTED SOMEBODY ELSE TO CORROBORATE IT, TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS ISN’T A SITUATION YOU ALL LIVE IN THE QUARTER HERE, OBVIOUSLY, A TRAGEDY UNFOLDED ON BOURBON STREET. I DON’T KNOW IF YOU KNOW ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. SURE. I MEAN, LOOK, YOU LIVE IN THE FRENCH QUARTER. YOU SEE CRAZY THINGS. IT’S A WILD AND CRAZY PLACE WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES LIKE THIS. HOW DOES THAT HIT YOU? RIGHT NOW, I’M IN SHOCK. AND, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE BEING IN NEW ORLEANS. WE HAVE WE HAVE WE HAVE HOPES OF WHAT IT ISN’T. AND THAT SOUNDS CRAZY, BUT LET ME TELL YOU, THIS IS AT THIS POINT, I KNOW NOTHING. I KNOW JUST AS MORE YOU KNOW MORE THAN I DO. I’M I’M WAKING UP TO IT AND I’M IN SHOCK. YEAH, I AGREE, I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL WAKE UP. NO, THANK YOU TWO AGAIN. SORRY TO PUT YOU ON THE SPOT LIKE THAT BUT YEAH BUT THAT’S THE SITUATION HERE TRAVERS. AGAIN, THERE’S WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES. THERE’S STATE POLICE. MOST OF THE STREETS FROM BOURBON TO DAUPHINE ARE BLOCKED OFF. RESIDENTS ARE JUST WAKING UP, PUTTING ON THE TV, WATCHING OUR COVERAGE, WATCHING WHAT’S GOING ON AND FINDING OUT. BUT AGAIN, JUST TO KIND OF SET THE SCENE WHAT THE GENTLEMAN JUST SAID AND WHAT WE HEARD HERE AS WELL. A STATE POLICE TROOPER ABOUT 90 MINUTES AGO SAW A SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE. BECAUSE OF THAT, HE NOTIFIED SPECIAL COMMAND. LIKE MIKE SAID, THEY BROUGHT THE SPECIAL COMMAND UNIT OUT HERE. THEY BROUGHT THE BOMB SQUADS OUT HERE. LET ME JUST POINT THIS OVER HERE. NOW. IT LOOKS LIKE NOPD IS NOW RUMMAGING THROUGH TRASH CANS, LOOKING FOR MAYBE MORE SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES. THIS IS A HEAVY NOPD PRESENCE NOW, AND THEY ARE NOW SCOURING THE AREA LOOKING FOR IT. LOOKS LIKE PACKAGES, DEVICES, ANYTHING THAT LOOKS SUSPICIOUS IN THIS AREA WITH THE FLASHLIGHTS COMING DOWN THE STREET BECAUSE THEY DID. AGAIN, WE DON’T WANT TO JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS. IT SOUNDED LIKE THEY DETONATED SOME TYPE OF SMALL DEVICE. WE HEARD FIRE IN THE HOLE AND THEN WE HEARD A SMALL EXPLOSION HERE. IT SOUNDED LIKE A LOUD FIRECRACKER GOING OFF HERE ON THE CORNER OF BOURBON AND ORLEANS. WE’RE ON DAUPHINE IN ORLEANS RIGHT NOW. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE POLICE WITH THE GLOVES, ALL OF THEM WEARING GLOVES, ALL OF THEM DOING AN INVESTIGATION RIGHT NOW. ALL OF THEM SEEING AND LOOKING FOR ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS HERE. THIS IS CLEARLY AN INVESTIGATION. SINCE THEY ARE ALL WEARING GLOVES. THEY HAVE THEIR FLASHLIGHTS AND THEY’RE GOING THROUGH THINGS WITH A FINE TOOTH COMB RIGHT NOW. WE’LL STAY HERE BECAUSE THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A VERY ACTIVE SITUATION WITH WHAT’S UNFOLDED ON BOURBON STREET IN THE CASUALTY SITUATION AND NOPD OFFICERS COMING AT US RIGHT NOW LOOKING FOR WHAT WE SUSPECT IS MORE SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES AND DEVICES HERE IN THE FRENCH QUARTER. SO AGAIN, I’LL LET YOU CONTINUE TO WATCH. IS IS THEY MARCH DOWN DAUPHINE HERE SEARCHING IN EVERY TRASH CAN AND AND LOOKING FOR ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS RIGHT NOW. BUT WE DID HEAR A SMALL EXPLOSION.
