Adams claims subway violence — including horrific arson attack — ‘overshadowed’ NYC’s 2024 success on transit crime

High-profile random attacks — notably the horrific arson in which a woman was burned to death on an F train — “overshadowed” New York City’s supposed successes in reining in subway crime during 2024, Mayor Eric Adams contended Tuesday.

Adams, during a defiant end-of-year news conference, repeated his years-long mantra that the “perception” of out-of-control subway crime must be curtailed.

“We are doing the job on bringing down the numbers, but as I say over and over and I said in 2022, New Yorkers must feel safe,” he told reporters from City Hall.

“People are seeing and feeling what they’re reading. So, our success is overshadowed.”

Mayor Eric Adams argued Tuesday that the city’s successes on reining in subway violence were “overshadowed” by random attacks. Paul Martinka

Newly installed NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch will send more officers onto subway platforms and into trains themselves to engage straphangers, Adams said, without providing details on how many additional cops or when or where they would be deployed.

His press conference came just hours before a straphanger was pushed in front of a 1 train in Manhattan in what cops were calling a random attack.

It also came nearly simultaneously with an NYPD announcement that investigators identified the straphanger who was burned to death more than a week ago as Debrina Kawam, 57, of New Jersey.

Kawam was allegedly set aflame by illegal Guatemalan immigrant Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, who faces first-degree murder charges in the sadistic attack.

The shocking, caught-on-video spectacle of Kawam’s body consumed by fire on an F train in Coney Island — all while the accused killer fanned the flames, before calmly sitting to watch the deadly pyre — punctuated a year of concerns that the subways are returning to the unsafe bad old days.

The fears led the red-bereted Guardian Angels and the crusaders’ flamboyant founder, Curtis Sliwa, to return for the first time in years to patrol the subways, where straphangers greeted them like old friends.

The Dec. 22 arson attack left a straphanger dead and capped a year of subway fears.
The Guardian Angels returned to patrol the subways this week. Matthew McDermott

Adams warned Sliwa, his Republican opponent in the 2021 mayoral election, not to “overstep.”

The mayor maintained the subway system only has six reported crimes a day, but a deeper look at NYPD crime statistics shows violent crime, including murder, has been rising on the rails.

The arson slaying tipped subway murders to 10 this year — double the number of murders in 2023 and matching a 25-year high reached in 2022, data show.

As Adams insisted the subways are safe, he also brushed off his scandal-plagued year that saw many of his top embattled pals pushed out.

The most recent ouster was NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, who resigned amid explosive accusations that he demanded sexual favors from a subordinate in exchange for massive amounts of overtime.

Former NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey’s resignation was the latest in a spate of high-level departures from Adams’ administration. Ed Reed/Mayoral Photography Office

Adams sidestepped a question about whether he, as mayor, bore responsibility for appointing allegedly problematic officials such as Maddrey. He instead contended the buck stopped with whether his officials deliver results.

“It’s my responsibility to make sure that the people are employed to the city deliver for the people of New York, and I take that responsibility,” he said.

The mayor also argued every Big Apple administration has had its fair share of disgraced officials.

“Life is hard,” he said when pressed by The Post, later telling reporters he had “no regrets” from 2024.

In a recent statement, Mayor Eric Adams has claimed that the recent surge in subway violence, including a horrific arson attack, has “overshadowed” the success of New York City’s transit crime reduction efforts in 2024.

Adams highlighted the city’s successful implementation of new safety measures, increased police presence, and improved coordination between law enforcement agencies as key factors in the significant decrease in transit crime over the past year. However, he expressed concern that the recent incidents of violence, including the shocking arson attack that left several passengers injured, have tarnished the city’s progress in this area.

The mayor emphasized the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among city officials, law enforcement, and community members to address subway violence and ensure the safety of all passengers. He also called for swift justice for those responsible for these heinous acts and reiterated his commitment to making public transportation in New York City safe and secure for all.

  • Washington Huskies WR Giles Jackson’s presence should help passing attack in Sun Bowl

Washington Huskies WR Giles Jackson’s presence should help passing attack in Sun Bowl

As one of the most productive wide receivers in the Big Ten this season and one of the most reliable and consistent contributors on Washington’s offense, Giles Jackson plays a pretty important role for the Washington Huskies as they get prepped to face off against the Louisville Cardinals in the 2024 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

Jackson, a seasoned wide receiver, has proven to be one of Washington’s most reliable pass catchers and he actually leads the team with a grand total of 74 receptions. He’s turned those 74 catches into 732 yards and three touchdowns.

And as the Huskies get set to face the Cardinals, Jackson is preparing to catch passes from a true freshman quarterback. In the final game of the 2024 Washington Husky football season, UW is turning to Demond Williams Jr. to lead the offense as Will Rogers wasn’t producing at a high level down the stretch of the season.

So, even though the bulk of Jackson’s receiving yards came via a connection with the aforementioned Rogers, the senior wide receiver will be hauling in passes from a much younger passer who will be making just his second collegiate start.

Washington Huskies WR Giles Jackson plays pivotal role for UW in Sun Bowl

The versatility, athleticism, reliability, and experience that Jackson brings to the table are all pretty dang important and should help the Huskies develop a passing attack as they face the Cardinals with such a young quarterback.

That’s not meant to take away from what Williams brings to the table. Fisch clearly believes he’s the best option for UW at quarterback (and there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Rogers was no longer going to be effective in UW’s offense as it currently operates).

But there’s plenty of reason to believe that having a solid, seasoned receiver ready to catch passes in tight windows of coverage should help whoever it is that’s throwing the ball. Having a good receiver can only serve to make Williams better. And that matters. And it’s why Jackson plays a pretty important role in this offense in this game.

The Washington Huskies are gearing up to face off against the Miami Hurricanes in the Sun Bowl, and one player who could make a big impact on the passing attack is wide receiver Giles Jackson.

Jackson, a transfer from Michigan, has been a dynamic playmaker for the Huskies this season. He has shown the ability to stretch the field with his speed and has been a reliable target for quarterback Dylan Morris.

With Jackson in the lineup, the Huskies passing attack has the potential to be even more explosive in the Sun Bowl. His presence on the field forces defenses to account for his speed, opening up opportunities for other receivers and creating mismatches in the secondary.

In a game that could come down to big plays in the passing game, having a weapon like Giles Jackson could prove to be a difference-maker for the Huskies. Look for him to make a big impact and help lead Washington to victory in the Sun Bowl.

  • New Year’s Eve 2025 Updates: Heavy Security For NYC Ball Drop After Christmas Market Attack

New Year’s Eve 2025 Updates: Heavy Security For NYC Ball Drop After Christmas Market Attack

More than a billion people are set to tune in to watch the Times Square ball drop tonight. Another million are expected to attend the115th time New Year’s Eve celebrations in person at New York City‘s Times Square. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that New York had been “operating in a heightened threat environment since October 7, and we remain vigilant.” But she assured visitors “there are no specific credible threats” at this time. Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner, Intelligence and Counterterrorism, added that this year’s heavy security was influenced by the German Christmas market attack, that left five dead and more than two injured, earlier this month. “We formulate our plan based on incidents that are happening around the world here in the city,” he said, adding that Christmas markets are a “persistent high risk target” for attacks. “And so, frankly, our New Year’s Eve celebrations around the world, which is why we put so much emphasis on all of the resources that are here focused on keeping this city and this event safe.” Security measures include a heavy police presence, drones, police dogs and restrictions on what attendees can bring. Revelers are not allowed to bring alcohol, backpacks, or even umbrellas this year. The ball drop, held annually since December 31, 1907, except for 1942 and 1943 due to World War II, was first organized by the owner of The New York Times, Adolph Ochs. Before the first ball drop, Ochs held a fireworks display for New Year’s Eve.

The New York City’s Times Square ball drop is in its 115th year.

The tradition has been held annually since December 31, 1907, with the exceptions of 1942 and 1943 due to wartimes.

The event was first organized by the owner of The New York Times, Adolph Ochs. Prior to the first ball drop, Ochs had held a fireworks display for New Year’s Eve.

The ball itself was designed by Artkraft Strauss. In the years since the first drop, the ball’s design has been updated to include new lighting technology. The original ball was made from wood and iron and lit with 100 light bulbs. It was 700 pounds and 5-feet in diameter, according to the Times Square official website.

In 1920, a 400-pound ball was made from iron to replace the original. That one was replaced in 1955 with an aluminum ball that weighed 150 pounds. Then in the 1980s, red lights and a green stem made the ball into an apple for the “I Love New York” campaign. In 1995, the ball was upgrade. It had an aluminum skin, rhinestones, strobes and computer controls.

The ball descends from One Times Square. In the 115 years, there have been a few mistakes like the ball not hitting the bottom on time during multiple festivities or heavy rain causing the fireworks to smoke in the 2018-19 celebration.

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve has been a staple of the New Year’s Eve ball drop since it first premiered in 1972.

Ryan Seacrest is once again hosting this year’s show, which starts at 8 p.m ET.

He joined the Rockin’ Eve team in December 2005, after Dick Clark suffered a stroke and co-hosted with Clark until the latter’s death in 2012.

Carrie Underwood is set to headline this year and is expected to sing a medley of some of her biggest hits in the run up to the ball drop.

“I have such fun memories of performing on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve in Times Square in both 2007 and 2015, and I’m so excited to perform just before the ball drops again this year,” the American Idol winner-turned-judge said in a press release. “I’m thrilled to celebrate 20 years since winning American Idol by joining Ryan as he hosts his 20th New Year’s Eve in Times Square.”

How to go to the bathroom in Times Square on New Year’s Eve

When you’re jammed into Times Square with scores of others to celebrate New Year’s Eve, there’s one predicament you might run into: where do you use the bathroom?

Times Square famously doesn’t have port-a-potties, and with an estimated 1 million people expected to watch the ball drop on December 31, hotels and restaurants will likely turn revelers away.

Without ready access to public bathrooms for hours, some attendees are forced to resort to wearing diapers and other forms of transportable bathrooms while celebrating New Year’s Eve in Times Square.

Most hotels and restaurants in the surrounding area do not allow public access to restrooms. Another approach by some attendees—albeit a potentially dangerous one—is not to drink liquids throughout the event to prevent the need for a bathroom trip.

But no matter the choice, if a person leaves the viewing area, they won’t get their spot back.

The best bet is to use the bathroom before heading to the festivities.

Read in full from Monica Sager on Newsweek.

How to watch the 2025 Times Square Ball Drop

No matter where your celebrations for New Year’s Eve are taking place, New York City’s Times Square Ball is infamous and returning for its 115th year.

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest will start at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

CNN will also have its own show, New Year’s Eve Live With Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, which will start at 8 p.m.

The festivities can also be watched on the NBC New York app as well as on the ABC app. It is also viewable on Roku, Peacock, Xumo Play, Samsung TV Plus, Amazon Fire Live TV, Google TV, CNN Max and Local Now.

As we approach the end of 2025 and prepare to ring in the new year, security measures in New York City are being ramped up for the annual ball drop in Times Square. This comes in the wake of a recent attack at a Christmas market in the city, which has heightened concerns about potential threats during large-scale events.

Authorities have announced that there will be heavy security presence throughout Times Square on New Year’s Eve, including an increased number of police officers, bomb-sniffing dogs, and surveillance cameras. Bag checks and metal detectors will also be in place at key entry points to the area.

In addition to the heightened security measures, there will be restrictions on vehicle access to Times Square and surrounding streets, as well as a ban on drones flying overhead during the festivities. These precautions are intended to prevent any potential threats and ensure the safety of all attendees.

Despite the increased security measures, officials are encouraging people to come out and celebrate the new year in Times Square. They have assured the public that every effort is being made to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

As we look forward to bidding farewell to 2025 and welcoming in a new year, let us remember to stay vigilant and look out for one another. May 2026 be a year filled with peace, prosperity, and joy for all.

  • Arsenal’s Transfer Target: Why Matheus Cunha Could Be Their Answer in Attack

Arsenal’s Transfer Target: Why Matheus Cunha Could Be Their Answer in Attack

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, Arsenal are on the lookout for attacking reinforcements to bolster their squad. One player who has caught their eye is Matheus Cunha, a talented young forward who has been making waves in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin.

Cunha, 22, is a versatile attacker who can play as a striker or on the wing. He possesses excellent dribbling skills, pace, and a keen eye for goal, making him a constant threat to opposition defenses. With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette both struggling for form this season, Arsenal are in need of a dynamic and clinical forward like Cunha to lead their attack.

One of the key reasons why Cunha could be the answer for Arsenal is his ability to create chances and score goals. He has already notched up an impressive 10 goals and 5 assists in the Bundesliga this season, showcasing his ability to both find the back of the net and set up his teammates. With Arsenal lacking a consistent goal threat in recent months, Cunha could provide the firepower they need to climb up the table.

Another factor that makes Cunha an attractive transfer target for Arsenal is his age and potential for development. At just 22 years old, he still has plenty of room to grow and improve as a player. With the right guidance and coaching, Cunha could blossom into a top-class forward and become a key player for Arsenal for years to come.

Furthermore, Cunha’s style of play would suit Arsenal’s attacking philosophy under manager Mikel Arteta. His pace and ability to run at defenders would add a new dimension to Arsenal’s attack, providing a different option to their current strikers. Additionally, Cunha’s work rate and willingness to track back and defend could also appeal to Arteta, who values hard work and commitment from his players.

Overall, Matheus Cunha could be the perfect solution to Arsenal’s attacking woes. With his combination of skill, pace, and goal-scoring ability, he has all the qualities to thrive in the Premier League and make a significant impact at the Emirates Stadium. If Arsenal can secure his signature in the upcoming transfer window, they could have found their long-term answer in attack.

Men from Ga. Paving Company Allegedly Attack Competitors: ‘Out of The Sopranos’

Six family members in the Georgia asphalt business are accused of attacking employees from a rival company with sticks and bats in broad daylight because they felt disrespected, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Mark Buckland Sr., 77, Mark Buckland Jr., 58, Willy Buckland Sr., 50, Willy Buckland Jr., 22, Luke Buckland, 28, and James Small, 21, were arrested and charged in connection with an alleged Dec. 19 attack on employees from EH Paving at a property in Bolingbroke, according to an incident report obtained by PEOPLE.

One of the victims told deputies that “the main reason for the fight today was due to the paving so close to Michael Buckland’s house and the Buckland’s found it ‘disrespectful’ that they got the job,” the report alleges.

The alleged attack is “like something out of the Sopranos TV series,” Monroe County Sheriff Brad Freeman told local outlet WMAZ.

“These are adult men too,” Freeman said, WMAZ reports. “Adult men with pretty good reputations.”

Monroe County Sheriff Public Information Officer Anna Greene Watkins tells PEOPLE, “Things like this usually do not happen here in Monroe County.”

The incident unfolded just after 1 p.m. on Dec. 19, when the owner of a property on Estes Road called 911 saying a group of men in three trucks pulled up, got out of the vehicles carrying sticks and bats and began arguing with men from EH Paving, who were working on his driveway, according to the report.

The men from EH Paving “backed up the driveway and attempted to retreat until there was nowhere to go,” the homeowner told the deputy on scene.

He said the alleged attackers “were swinging bats and hitting the men” from EH Paving.

One of the men from EH Paving took out a gun and shot it into the woods in an attempt to stop the fighting, according to the report.

Eddie Harrison, the owner of EH Paving said “he was scared Mark Sr was going to shoot him due to Mark Sr pulling a long ‘cowboy style pistol’ out and pointing it in his face,” the incident report alleges.

“Harrison stated Willy Buckland Sr hit his son in the head with a bat,” the report claims. “Harrison also stated Willy Jr. and [James Small] jumped on his other son Eddie Harrison Jr. and struck him multiple times with fists and a bat. Harrison stated Luke Buckland struck his nephew Eddie Jack Harrison with a bat.”

After Mark Buckland, Jr. told the deputy he had been punched in the mouth, the deputy asked him why he and his family were at the property on Estes Road.

Mark Buckland, Jr. was allegedly unable to give him an explanation, saying it was “just a misunderstanding,” according to the report.

Mark Buckland Jr. owns Houston Asphalt in Macon, according to the report. Mark Buckland Sr. and Willy Buckland, Sr. own asphalt companies as well, the report says.

Willy Buckland Sr. is charged with criminal trespass and aggravated assault.

Willy Buckland Jr., Luke Buckland and James Small are charged with simple battery and criminal trespass.

They were released on bond after spending two days in jail, according to online jail records.

It is unclear whether they have retained attorneys.

In a shocking turn of events, men from a Georgia paving company are facing allegations of attacking their competitors in a manner reminiscent of a scene out of The Sopranos.

Authorities say that the men, who have not been publicly identified, allegedly assaulted rival workers from a competing company in a violent and unprovoked attack. The incident reportedly took place at a construction site where both companies were working, and tensions had been escalating between the two groups for some time.

Witnesses described the attack as brutal and organized, with the men from the Georgia paving company allegedly using baseball bats and other weapons to intimidate and harm their competitors. The victims were left battered and bruised, with some requiring medical attention for their injuries.

The Georgia paving company has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident, but authorities are investigating the matter and have promised to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

This shocking display of violence has left many in the industry concerned about the growing hostility and aggression between rival companies. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise when competition turns into conflict, and the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and professionally.

As the investigation unfolds, the men involved in this alleged attack may face criminal charges and legal consequences for their actions. In the meantime, the construction community is left reeling from this disturbing and violent incident that has shaken the industry to its core.

  • Matheus Cunha: The Brazilian Forward Arsenal are Eyeing to Boost Their Attack

Matheus Cunha: The Brazilian Forward Arsenal are Eyeing to Boost Their Attack

Arsenal are reportedly eyeing Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha as a potential addition to their squad to boost their attacking options. The 22-year-old has been making waves in the Bundesliga with his performances for Hertha Berlin, and it is believed that the Gunners are keen to bring him to the Premier League.

Cunha started his career in his native Brazil with Coritiba before making the move to Europe with RB Leipzig in 2018. After spending two seasons with the German club, he joined Hertha Berlin in January 2020 and has since established himself as a key player for the team.

The Brazilian forward has been in impressive form this season, scoring 8 goals and providing 6 assists in 19 Bundesliga appearances. Cunha’s dynamic playing style, which combines pace, skill, and physicality, has caught the attention of several top clubs across Europe, with Arsenal being one of them.

The Gunners have struggled for goals this season, with their attacking options failing to deliver consistently. With the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette not hitting top form, Arsenal are in need of reinforcements to improve their attacking threat.

Cunha’s versatility makes him an attractive option for Arsenal, as he is capable of playing as a striker, winger, or attacking midfielder. His ability to create chances, score goals, and link up play could provide the Gunners with a much-needed boost in attack.

Although Arsenal are facing financial constraints due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, they are reportedly willing to make a move for Cunha in the upcoming transfer window. The Brazilian forward is believed to be valued at around £20-£25 million, which could be a feasible price for the Gunners to pay.

With his potential to thrive in the Premier League and his ability to add a new dimension to Arsenal’s attack, Matheus Cunha could be a smart signing for Mikel Arteta’s side. The Gunners will be hoping to secure his services in the summer to help them push for a top-four finish and compete for silverware next season.

Clay Travis accuses Ryan Clark of using his race ‘to mask his insecurities’ in astonishing attack

Outkick founder Clay Travis did not hold back on Ryan Clark after the ESPN analyst claimed that Lamar Jackson deserves the NFL MVP award over Josh Allen as he has ‘evolutionized’ what it means to be a black quarterback.

On Friday, the panel on ESPN’s marquee show First Take discussed the MVP race where Clark praised Jackson for surpassing Michael Vick for the most rushing yards by a quarterback.

However, Outkick’s Bobby Burack wrote about how Clark claimed the Ravens star changed the position while being the ‘most underappreciated QB in the NFL” as a panel of black analysts nodded along.

Reposting their story on X, Travis unloaded on Clark for his approach to the MVP debate.

‘Ryan Clark is basically Carlton without the killer dance moves or likability,’ he said. ‘He’s desperately insecure and uses race as a shield to mask his own horrible insecurities. It’s honestly sad to see.’

‘His bosses are mostly white dudes and terrified of being called racist for firing him so they keep him employed even though he isn’t very talented and provides nothing of any particular value,’ Travis continued.

‘Was there a time when race impacted your success negatively in America? Yes. Was Ryan Clark an adult for any of those times? No. Now he trades on the legacy of racism to stay employed,’ he added. ‘Again, sad to see. ESPN should be better than this. Hell, sports should.’

The two-time MVP has the upper hand on Allen in most statistics this season. Jackson has more passing yards (3,955-3,549), passing touchdowns (39-26), and rushing yards (852-514).

While the Buffalo Bills quarterback only has the higher number in rushing touchdowns, 11-4, ESPN Bet has Allen favored to win the award at -225.

Aside from his previous takes, Clark also alluded to Steve Nash winning two NBA MVPs when ‘Kobe Bryant was the best player in the league.’

Travis was not the only sports media personality who blasted Clark and ESPN after Friday’s First Take.

After Burack compared the Jackson-Allen debate to the Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark conversations earlier this year, Jason Whitlock chimed in with an NBA comparison.

‘You forgot Jokic vs Embiid,’ he said. ‘Not sure if the convos would go much different if you added color. They’re all afraid of being labeled sellouts or racist on social media.

‘You rig the convos with a weak (least informed, least credible person on the panel) host who lives in fear of social media backlash and then you let nature (social media matrix) control the convo,’ Whitlock continued. ‘You can’t have a rugged conversation when the host believes tweets and posts break bones.’ m

Clay Travis, controversial sports commentator and founder of Outkick, has launched a scathing attack on former NFL player and ESPN analyst Ryan Clark, accusing him of using his race “to mask his insecurities.”

In a series of tweets, Travis claimed that Clark, who is black, frequently plays the race card in discussions about sports and social issues as a way to deflect criticism and avoid addressing his own shortcomings.

Travis wrote, “Ryan Clark loves to use his race to deflect from the fact that he’s just not that good at his job. Instead of owning up to his mistakes or shortcomings, he plays the victim and hides behind his race. It’s a sad and pathetic tactic.”

The accusations have sparked outrage among fans and fellow media personalities, with many condemning Travis for his insensitive and inflammatory remarks.

Clark has not yet responded to Travis’ allegations, but it is clear that this feud is far from over. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.

Shark attack at Egyptian Red Sea resort kills one foreigner, injures another

    CNN
     —

A shark attack in Egypt’s Red Sea resort town of Marsa Alam has killed one foreigner and injured another, Egypt’s Ministry of Environment said in a statement Sunday.

The attack occurred in deep waters, the ministry said, outside the designated swimming area of Marsa Alam.

The injured foreigner was taken Porto Ghalib hospital for treatment, the ministry statement said, adding that an emergency committee has been established to investigate the incident.

Their nationalities have not been disclosed.

There have been several similar incidents in recent years.

Last year, a deadly shark attack killed a Russian citizen in the popular tourist city of Hurghada on Egypt’s eastern coast, prompting the closure of nearby beaches.

In a tragic incident at a popular Egyptian Red Sea resort, a shark attack has claimed the life of one foreigner and left another injured. The attack occurred while the victims were snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, enjoying the beauty of the underwater world.

Authorities have confirmed that a shark was responsible for the attack, although the exact species has not been identified. The injured individual is currently receiving medical treatment, and their condition is reported to be stable.

This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife, even in seemingly safe and picturesque locations. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time.

We urge all visitors to the Red Sea to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines while enjoying the natural beauty of the ocean. Stay informed about local wildlife and take necessary precautions to prevent any potential incidents.
