    Tourist killed in Red Sea shark attack near Marsa Alam area


    A shark attack off of Egypt’s Red Sea coastline has left one tourist dead and another injured, officials have said.

    In a statement, the north African nation’s environment ministry said Sunday’s incident occurred north of Marsa Alam, a resort town in eastern Egypt popular with divers.

    It added that the attack occurred in “deep waters outside of the designated swimming area”.

    While the ministry only said that the two victims were foreign, the AFP news agency reported they were Italian nationals, citing an unnamed source at the Italian foreign ministry.

    The 48-year-old man who died was a resident of Rome, while the injured man was 69, according to AFP.

    Egyptian officials said the two tourists were transported to a hospital in Port Ghalib, around 30 miles north of Marsa Alam.

    The swimming area in Marsa Alam will be closed and the incident is being investigated, authorities said.

    In the past 10 years, there have been four confirmed fatalities due to shark attacks in the Red Sea, according to data compiled by the independent Shark Research Institute.

    The last to occur happened in June 2023 near Hurguda and involved a 24-year-old Russian man.

    A tourist has died after a shark attack near a popular resort in Egypt.

    Gianluca Di Gioia, 48, of Rome, died after he was attacked by the tiger shark in the Red Sea on Sunday, Dec. 22, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

    Di Gioia was visiting the resort with family to celebrate his birthday, which happened to be the day before on Saturday, Dec. 21, according to the report.

    The man’s wife yelled for help as she witnessed the attack from shore, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported.

    The Egyptian Ministry of the Environment said Di Gioia’s 69-year-old friend attempted to stop the attack, which took place “in deep water outside the bathing area” at the Marsa Alam resort, according to a translation from ANSA.

    Meanwhile, the friend who attempted to save him sustained “superficial wounds,” according to Corriere della Sera.

    Di Gioia was born in Italy but lived in France with his family, ANSA and Corriere della Sera reported. He and his wife got married in 2013.

    Additionally, he was an official with the European Union, ANSA reported. Di Gioia worked at the European External Action Service since 2012.

    Di Gioia’s body is now in the mortuary of the Port Ghalib hospital, according to the reports. An investigation into his death is ongoing.

    The Egyptian Ministry of the Environment said the area where the attack took place is closed until Wednesday, Jan. 1.

    The Italian Embassy in Cairo is reportedly providing assistance to Di Gioia’s family in the wake of the man’s death.

    MARSA ALAM, Egypt – A shark attack in Egypt’s Red Sea near a popular tourist destination has left a European Union official dead and another injured, according to local media and state officials.

    Egypt’s Ministry of Environment said the attack happened Sunday morning in deep water outside the swimming area in the northern region of Marsa Alam, a coastal town known for its sandy beaches and coral reefs.

    Gianluca Di Gioia, 48, from Rome, was killed by a tiger shark while his friend, identified as 69-year-old Peppino Fappani, tried to stop the attack, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The attack happened while the two men were scuba diving to explore a coral reef. Family members said the two men were celebrating Di Gioia’s birthday on Dec. 21.

    Fappani reportedly suffered “small bites” after intervening to help and was rushed to a hospital in Porto Ghalib along with Di Gioia’s body.

    Both men were Italian nationals, according to Italian media. Di Gioia worked at the European Commission’s research center and had been working since 2012 at the European External Action Service (EEAS), the diplomatic service of the EU.

    The area where the attack occurred has been closed to swimming until Wednesday as a precautionary measure, Minister of the Environment Dr. Yasmine Fouad said in a statement online. An urgent committee has been formed to investigate the causes of the attack.

    Shark attacks, while rare, have occurred previously along the Egyptian Red Sea coast. This incident comes on the heels of the sinking of a tourist yacht near Marsa Alam last month, resulting in four deaths and seven still missing, ANSA reported.

    The Italian Embassy in Cairo is reportedly providing consular assistance to Di Gioia’s family.

    Silver and black attack: Raiders-clad suspect in ’92 Hayward triple killing remains at large


    The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public assistance in solving a 32-year-old case of three males killed in Hayward.

    Around 11:50 p.m. on Dec. 27, 1992, three males were killed in an apartment in the 21000 block of Oak Street in Hayward. The victims were identified as Oscar Villapondo, 20, David Villapondo, 18, Richard Villapondo, 17.

    According to witnesses, a young white or Hispanic standing at 5 feet 3 inches with a medium build walked away from the scene and got in a golden or yellow Chevy Nova that was parked in front of the apartment at the time of the killing.

    The suspect, around 16 to 18 years old at the time, wore a Raiders-type parka with the hood covering his head, while wearing a Raiders cap.

    Anyone with information relevant to the case is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office cold case unit at 510-667-3661, or the tip line at 510-667-3622. Refer to case no. 92-20174.
