  • Drones attack Russian military industrial hub 600 miles from Ukraine

LONDON — Russia and Ukraine exchanged large drone attacks on Sunday night into Monday, with UAVs forcing flight restrictions at three Russian airports and prompting reports of an attack on a major military aviation hub.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have shot down 30 Ukrainian drones overnight over western Russian regions — 14 over Bryansk region, six over Kaluga region, three over Belgorod region, three over Kursk region, two over Ryazan region, and two over Oryol region.

Another drone was shot down over the Republic of Tatarstan, the ministry statement said. The capital of Tatarstan, Kazan, is more than 600 miles from the closest Ukrainian-controlled territory.

Russia’s Rosaviatsia federal air transport agency announced temporary restrictions on flights at the Kazan International Airport and Begishevo Airport — both in the Tatarstan region.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pictured at a presentation of Ukrainian military drones in Kyiv, Ukraine, on Jan. 16, 2025.

The restrictions were lifted around four hours later. Kazan International Airport said on Telegram the stoppages were intended “to ensure the safety of civil aircraft flights.” Three planes were diverted away from Kazan while the restrictions were in place, the airport said.

Flights were also restricted at the Izhevsk Airport in the neighboring Udmurt Republic, Rosaviatsia said.

Authorities in Tatarstan said drones targeted industrial facilities in the region, Russia’s RBC news outlet reported. Officials said all drones were neutralized with no casualties or damage reported, though added that emergency responders were working at the scene, RBC said.

Photos and videos posted to social media by residents indicated an attack in the vicinity Kazan. ABC News was unable to immediately verify the footage.

Andriy Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation — which operates as part of the country’s Security and Defense Council — reported “explosions in Kazan,” claiming that “military facilities were attacked by unknown drones.”

Kovalenko noted that the city “is home to several important aviation enterprises that play a key role in the Russian military-industrial complex,” among them the aviation plant and a helicopter plant.

Kazan also operates an explosives factory manufacturing aerial munitions including Kalibr and Iskander missiles, Kovalenko said. “Not the first attacks, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to cover the skies of Russia,” Kovalenko wrote on Telegram.

The Kazan Aviation Plant — a major aviation industrial site — was among the sensitive sites noted by Kovalenko.

The plant was put under European Union sanctions after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with the bloc noting the site “manufactures and repairs the Tu-160 strategic missile carriers and the TU-22M3M/TU-22M3 long-range bombers.” The facility also “produces parts used in the construction of Il-76 strategic airlifters,” the EU said.

Elsewhere, Kaluga governor Vladislav Shapsha said on Telegram that drone debris fell on an industrial site in the region causing a fire, though “preliminary data” indicated “no casualties or damage to infrastructure.”

Bryansk governor Alexander Bogomaz said on Telegram that air defenses shot down four U.S.-made HIMARS missiles and 14 drones over the region on Sunday night, reporting no casualties or damage.

Ukraine, meanwhile, said Russia launched 141 drones and one ballistic missile into the country on Sunday night.

Ukraine’s air force said it downed 93 attack UAVs, with another 47 lost in flight. Two of the drones flew back into Russia airspace, the air force said in a statement posted to Telegram.

ABC News’ Tanya Stukalova contributed to this report.

In a shocking turn of events, drones have launched a coordinated attack on a Russian military industrial hub located 600 miles away from Ukraine. The attack, which took place in the early hours of the morning, targeted key infrastructure and facilities within the hub, causing significant damage and casualties.

Reports indicate that multiple drones armed with explosives were used in the attack, leading to widespread destruction and chaos in the area. The Russian military has quickly mobilized to respond to the attack, but the perpetrators behind this bold and brazen act remain unknown.

The incident has raised concerns about the growing threat of drone attacks in conflict zones, and the need for enhanced security measures to protect critical infrastructure from such attacks. As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the implications of this attack on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine remain to be seen.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

Russia is rearming faster than previously thought and could be making preparations to attack a Nato country, a top German official has warned.

“The Russian armed forces are not just able to compensate for the enormous personnel and material losses, they are successfully rearming,” said Germany’s Maj Gen Christian Freuding.

While it is not clear that Vladimir Putin intends to attack a Nato member state, Gen Freuding said the Russian president was “clearly creating the conditions for it”.

“Production is growing, the supplies in the depots are growing,” said the head of Germany’s military task force for Ukraine, noting Russia is using Iran and North Korea to replenish its supplies of missiles, drones and tanks.

In France, president Emmanuel Macron spoke moments before Donald Trump’s inauguration to warn that Russia will challenge Europe’s security for a long time. “Let’s not fool ourselves, this conflict will not be resolved tomorrow. Or the day after tomorrow,” he said, adding that peace in Europe required Europeans to be at the negotiating table.

Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Trump’s return as president, saying Ukraine looks forward to working with him.

More than 152 clashes in past 24 hours, says Kyiv

More than 152 combat clashes took place over the past 24 hours, nearly half of which took place on the Pokrovsk front, Kyiv has said.

Ukrainian forces repelled 73 attacks near Pokrovsk, Ukraine’s General Staff said on Facebook, as Russian troops look to cut off key supply lines in the eastern town.

Russian troops fired five missiles, dropped 11 aerial bombs and used 2,653 kamikaze drones in the past 24 hours, it added.

Combat clashes were recorded around the country, most significantly on the Kupiansk, Lyman and Toretsk fronts, and in Russia’s Kursk region.

Putin calls for deepened relationship with China in call with ‘dear friend’ Xi

Russian president Vladimir Putin has called on Moscow and Beijing to deepen their strategic partnership, in a call with his “dear friend” and Chinese president Xi Jinping.

Waving at Mr Xi over a video call, Putin said he wants to bring forward “new plans for the development of the Russian-Chinese comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation” in a video released by the Kremlin of their conversation.

“I agree with you that cooperation between Moscow and Beijing is based on a broad commonality of national interests and a convergence of views on what relations between major powers should be,” Putin said.

“We build our ties on the basis of friendship, mutual trust and support, equality and mutual benefit. These connections are self-sufficient, independent of domestic political factors and the current global situation.”

Russia and China have for years been united in a common geopolitical cause to weaken western US-led hegemony, particularly after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and increased US efforts to counter China’s economic and military strength.

Ukraine strikes aircraft factory and oil depot, Kyiv’s military says

Ukrainian forces hit a Russian aviation factory in the Smolensk region and an oil depot in the Voronezh region on Tuesday, its military said.

Andrii Kovalenko, the head of Kyiv’s Center for Countering Disinformation, said according to Ukrainska Pravda: “This plant [the Smolensk Aviation Plant] is closely connected with other businesses of the Russian defence industrial base, supplying components or involved in collaboration to create modern aircraft systems.”

The Voronezh strike is the second time Ukraine has hit an oil depot this week.

Ukraine has increased the regularity of its long-range strikes into Russia for the past several months, damaging energy infrastructure and military-industrial facilities.

Pro-Russian candidate leads Romanian poll ahead of May election

A pro-Russian candidate currently leads the Romanian polls four months before a crucial election in May.

Calin Georgescu, the far-right candidate who opposes Romanian support for Ukraine in its defense against Putin’s invasion, is the voters’ top choice ahead of a re-run of a presidential election.

The European Union state’s top court annulled the initial presidential election two days before the second round of voting, due to allegations of Russian interference.

The election of Georgescu would be a critical blow for Ukraine, which has relied on Romania to export millions of tons of Ukrainian grain through its Black Sea port of Constanta, trained Ukrainian fighter pilots and donated a Patriot air defence battery to Kyiv.

Georgescu is critical of NATO and has praised Romania’s fascist leaders of the 1930s. The EU court said he had benefited from a social media campaign likely orchestrated by Russia – Moscow denied the accusations.

But the latest polls for the first round show Georgescu set to gain 38 percent of the vote, with Crin Antonescu, leader of the pro-European governing coalition, sitting at just 25 percent.

Decisive Trump could change the course of history – senior Russian official

The chief of Russia’s $23 billion sovereign wealth fund said new US president Donald Trump’s decisive leadership could “change the course of history” on Tuesday.

His praise came after MR Trump signed a batch of executive orders straight after his inauguration. Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), said Mr Trump’s actions could boost growth and open opportunities for dialogue.

“President Trump’s bold actions today prove that decisive leadership can change the course of history, unlocking economic growth and transforming global challenges into opportunities for dialogue and resolution through problem solving,” Mr Dmitriev said.

Mr Dmitriev, who is currently under US sanctions deemed illegal by Russian officials, is a US-educated former Goldman Sachs banker who played a key role in early contracts between Moscow and Trump’s first administration, after election in 2016.

Trump has a key decision to make on Ukraine – is he an ally of Kyiv or Putin?

In Ukraine’s capital, they know that the 47th president of the US is no particular friend. They also believe he’s potty about Vladimir Putin, and that may be to their advantage when Trump comes around to renewing military support for a nation fighting off the Kremlin.

Officials here are philosophical and diplomatic, even when speaking privately, about the incoming president. They’re keen to make a new relationship work – but also know that if there’s one legacy Trump won’t want attached to his name is that he was a patsy for the Russian president.

Russia’s battlefield losses hit record high, says Ukraine – as it prepares for impact of Trump presidency

The Ukrainian military chief has said that 150,000 of Vladimir Putin’s troops were killed in 2024, as the countries prepare for a new era of their conflict after Donald Trump re-enters the White House.

A record 434,000 casualties, including the wounded, were suffered last year taking total Russian casualties to 819,000, claimed Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. “This year of combat has cost them more than the previous two years of the war combined,” Mr Syrskyi told Ukrainian TV channel TSN.

Russia has gained ground in eastern Ukraine over the past year, but at the cost of heavy casualties as it throws waves of soldiers at Ukraine’s defensive lines.

Moscow and Kyiv are also seeking battlefield gains to strengthen their negotiating positions ahead of any prospective talks to end the three-year-old war.

  • European diplomat: Israel has decided to attack Iran’s nuke sites

A senior European diplomat said that Israel has already decided it will attack Iran’s nuclear sites, implying such an attack was not imminent, but also not in the distant future, Al Arabiya reported over the weekend.

“We believe Israel has taken the decision to attack following the developments in the Middle East over the last several months,” one senior European diplomat said according to the report.

Next, the report said that the diplomat did not say the attack was believed to be imminent but said several European countries have opened talks with the incoming Trump administration to check if there is still a chance to use diplomacy or other tools to block Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

According to the report, European diplomats’ activity on the issue has spiked given their fears that the Trump administration will be far more aggressive with the Islamic Republic.

England, France and Germany (the E-3) held talks with Iran last week to try to gauge the ayatollahs’ readiness for diplomacy and in anticipation of new  moves by Trump.

An Iranian missile is displayed during a rally marking the annual Quds Day, or Jerusalem Day, on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan in Tehran, Iran April 29, 2022. (credit: MAJID ASGARIPOUR/WANA (WEST ASIA NEWS AGENCY) VIA REUTERS)

    ‘Extreme concern’

In December, the E-3 expressed “extreme concern” over Iran’s enrichment capacity with France calling the uranium enrichment close to the “point of no return.”

On Friday, US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch said the US would return to “President Trump’s maximum pressure campaign on Iran and safeguard American national security.”

Israeli officials, from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Defense Minister Israel Katz, to top IDF officials, have made numerous statements in recent months indicating a greater real readiness to attack Iran’s nuclear sites.

Those statements came after Israel destroyed most of Iran’s advanced air defense systems on October 26 in retaliation for a second direct massive ballistic missile attack by Tehran on the Jewish state on October 1.

Most of the Israeli statements have drawn attention to the idea that Iran’s nuclear sites are now close to defenseless, or the most vulnerable to an Israeli strike in years that they have been.

Stay updated with the latest news!

Subscribe to The Jerusalem Post Newsletter

In fact, given those statements, what was new about the European official’s statement to Al Arabiya was less the idea of an Israeli attack, but the idea that it had actually been decided, and also the idea that the Trump administration is seriously weighing being involved.

According to the report, the Trump administration is considering being involved or giving Israel a green light.

In public statements, Trump has refused to rule out military action.

In a shocking turn of events, a European diplomat has revealed that Israel has made the decision to launch an attack on Iran’s nuclear sites. This news comes amidst escalating tensions between the two countries, with Iran’s continued pursuit of nuclear capabilities raising concerns among the international community.

The diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that Israel has been closely monitoring Iran’s nuclear program and believes that military action is necessary to prevent the regime from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The timing and details of the attack have not been disclosed, but it is expected to be a coordinated effort involving multiple strikes on key nuclear facilities.

This development has sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles, with many world leaders urging restraint and calling for a peaceful resolution to the escalating conflict. The United Nations has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the situation and find a diplomatic solution to prevent further escalation.

As tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, the international community is on high alert and closely monitoring the situation. The implications of a potential Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear sites are profound and could have far-reaching consequences for the region and beyond. Only time will tell how this situation will unfold, but one thing is certain – the stakes have never been higher.

  • Eagles Fan Loses Job at D.E.I. Firm After Misogynistic Attack on Packers Fan

A Philadelphia Eagles fan who spewed crude insults at a woman rooting for the visiting Green Bay Packers during Sunday’s wild-card playoff game lost his job this week at a New Jersey company that specializes in D.E.I. work because of his conduct, which was caught on a viral video.

The fan, whose name was not released by his former employer, BCT Partners, was also barred from future events at Lincoln Financial Field, the home stadium of the Eagles, a person briefed on the matter told The New York Times.

In the video, which was shared online early Monday by the woman’s fiancé and viewed more than 31 million times on X, the fan repeatedly called her a vulgar name and cursed at her during the Eagles’ opening-round 22-10 victory in the playoffs. The man was sitting in the upper deck, one row behind the couple, who were both wearing Packers jerseys and live outside Philadelphia.

The woman’s fiancé, Alexander Basara, a podcaster who focuses on the Packers, asked internet sleuths to help him to identify the man.

“What it’s like going to Philly just trying to root for your team…” he wrote. “Unprovoked, uncalled for. Packers twitter, help me out and find this guy…… this is not okay I hate that my fiancé had this happen simply cheering for her team.”

In a social media post late on Tuesday, BCT Partners, which is based in East Brunswick, N.J., wrote that it had “decided to part company” with the employee immediately after conducting an internal investigation into his actions at the game.

“We condemn our former employee’s conduct in the strongest possible terms,” the company wrote. “This individual’s conduct and language were vile, disgusting, unacceptable and horrific and have no place in our workplace and society. Such conduct is not who we are and what we stand for.”

Efforts to reach the fan involved in the episode by phone, email and text message on Wednesday were not immediately successful.

On the BCT Partners website, the company describes itself as minority-owned and “D.E.I. champions,” the abbreviation for diversity, equity and inclusion. The site states that the group’s corporate culture is guided by the “South African principle of Ubuntu, translated as ‘I am because we are’ or ‘humanity towards others.’”

The company offered an apology to the woman in the video and said that it was committed to gender equity.

The woman and her fiancé, Mr. Basara, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wednesday.

In an interview on Tuesday, the woman and Mr. Basara told NBC10 in Philadelphia that the man sitting behind them grew increasingly confrontational toward the end of the third quarter and started to insult her appearance.

“I think he attacked me more so because I am a woman and I’m not going to punch him in the face, or he didn’t feel threatened by me,” she said.

In a city known for being merciless to visiting sports fans — and where Santa Claus was once pelted with snowballs at halftime during an Eagles game in 1968 — the fan’s actions drew national attention.

It was not the first time this season in the National Football League that a fan’s misconduct made headlines.

In December, a Detroit Lions fan had his season tickets revoked by the team after getting into a shouting match with the Packers coach Matt LaFleur on the field before a game. The fan had been invited to help hold a giant American flag for the national anthem when he started taunting visiting players and coaches, including by making a throat-slashing gesture.

Also in December, the family of an 8-year-old cancer survivor attending a Buffalo Bills game said that they had left early after the girl, a fan of the San Francisco 49ers, the visitors that night, had been pushed by a fan of the home team.

    Kirsten Noyes contributed research.

Recently, an Eagles fan made headlines for all the wrong reasons after launching a misogynistic attack on a Packers fan. The incident took place at a D.E.I. (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) firm, where the Eagles fan was employed.

The Eagles fan, who has since been fired from the firm, directed a series of offensive and derogatory comments towards the Packers fan, including sexist remarks and threats of violence. The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media, sparking outrage and condemnation from fans of both teams.

In a statement released by the D.E.I. firm, they expressed their disappointment and disgust at the behavior of the Eagles fan. They emphasized that such actions are completely antithetical to their values of promoting equality and respect for all individuals.

The Eagles fan has since issued a public apology for his actions, but the damage has been done. His employment at the D.E.I. firm has been terminated, and he faces backlash from both Eagles and Packers fans alike.

This incident serves as a reminder that sports rivalries should never escalate to the point of dehumanizing or attacking others. It is important to remember that at the end of the day, sports are meant to be a source of enjoyment and camaraderie, not a platform for hate and intolerance. Let’s strive to create a more inclusive and respectful sports culture for all fans, regardless of their team allegiance.

  • NATO Scrambled Norwegian Fighter Jets For First Time Against Russian Attack

NATO scrambled Norwegian fighter jets stationed in Poland for the first time on Wednesday, the alliance’s air command said, after Russia had a “massive” number of aircraft operating against Ukraine.

Polish authorities had said on Wednesday that fighter jets were scrambled after “intense long-range aviation activity” was detected from Russia early on Wednesday.

Ukraine reported waves of drone and missile attacks across the country, including in western regions bordering NATO territory. Russia acknowledged it had targeted Ukraine overnight.

    Why It Matters

This is the first time Norwegian jets have been scrambled to protect Poland’s airspace, the NATO air command said in a brief statement on Thursday.

Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine have occasionally spilled over into NATO members like Poland and Romania when Moscow has targeted its neighbor’s western regions.

Although NATO countries have not treated these incidents as attacks on the alliance, member states are collectively obliged to respond to assaults on any one alliance nation with full force, raising fears of the conflict in Ukraine escalating.

The Polish military has scrambled fighter jets several times in recent weeks, including on Christmas Day, when Moscow carried out extensive strikes across Ukraine.

NATO countries bordering Ukraine occasionally use jets belonging to other nations’ militaries to respond to Russian activity. Two Spanish air force F-18 jets responded along with Romanian F-16s to reports of an unknown object entering Romania in October.

    What To Know

NATO’s air command said two of Norway’s advanced F-35 jets stationed in Poland were “scrambled in response to a massive number of airborne [Russian] aircraft” on Wednesday.

Poland’s military command had not specified the aircraft scrambled at the time, but added its ground-based air defenses and radars were put on the “highest state of readiness.”

A spokesperson for the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces told Newsweek that “intense long-range aviation activity” from Russia had been detected early on Wednesday.

“The Russian activity was related to air and missile strikes on objects located on the territory of Ukraine, especially western parts of the country,” the spokesperson said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow had carried out a “massive attack” on the country’s energy infrastructure.

Kyiv’s air force said the Kremlin had launched a “combined” attack on Ukraine overnight, using 74 drones as well as ballistic and cruise missiles. The air force said Moscow had launched Kh-22 and Kh-32 cruise missiles from Tu-22M3 jets, and Kh-101 and Kh-55 missiles from Tu-95MS strategic bombers, plus other missiles from unspecified tactical aircraft.

Moscow had focused on the country’s energy facilities, especially gas infrastructure in the northeastern Kharkiv and western Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, the air force said, adding there had been “damage” to the sites.

Russia said it had hit Ukraine’s “critical gas and energy infrastructure,” saying its objectives were “achieved.”

    Who Said What

Russia’s Defense Ministry in a statement posted to messaging app Telegram on Wednesday: “This morning, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched a group strike with high-precision weapons and strike unmanned aerial vehicles on critical gas and energy infrastructure facilities that ensure the operation of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine. The strike’s objective was achieved. All designated facilities were hit.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a statement on social media: “Another massive Russian attack. It’s the middle of winter, and the target for the Russians remains unchanged: our energy infrastructure. Among their objectives were gas and energy facilities that sustain normal life for our people.”

    What Happens Next

Russian aerial attacks on Ukraine—and vice versa—will continue until it becomes clear how President-elect Donald Trump plans to handle ceasefire talks between Kyiv and Moscow. Extensive Russian strikes in western Ukraine will likely trigger more NATO jets being scrambled in the near future.

In a historic move, NATO recently scrambled Norwegian fighter jets for the first time to intercept Russian aircraft approaching Norwegian airspace. This incident highlights the escalating tensions between NATO countries and Russia, as well as the importance of maintaining a strong defense presence in the region.

The Norwegian fighter jets were quickly deployed to intercept the Russian aircraft and ensure the safety and security of Norwegian airspace. This rapid response demonstrates the readiness and capabilities of NATO forces in the face of potential threats.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing geopolitical tensions between NATO and Russia, and the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in the region. As tensions continue to simmer, it is crucial that NATO countries remain united and steadfast in their commitment to defending their borders and ensuring the security of the region.

This latest development underscores the importance of maintaining a strong and resilient defense posture in the face of evolving security challenges. NATO’s swift response to this incident sends a clear message to potential aggressors that any attempts to violate the sovereignty of member states will be met with a swift and decisive response.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is imperative that NATO countries stand together in solidarity and continue to uphold the principles of collective defense and deterrence. The recent scramble of Norwegian fighter jets against Russian aggression serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of a strong and united NATO alliance in maintaining peace and security in the region.

  • Florida hotel discriminated against Arab American group after Hamas attack, DOJ says

The owner of a hotel in Orlando’s tourist district has reached an agreement with the Justice Department after the agency sued alleging discrimination when the resort canceled a planned conference for an Arab American group in the weeks after the attack which triggered the war in Gaza.

The Justice Department’s complaint filed Thursday alleged that the owner of DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Orlando at SeaWorld had discriminated on the basis of national origin when it canceled hosting an annual summit held by the Arab America Foundation in November 2023, almost a month after the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

There had been no threats or specific risks to the hotel related to the summit or any other non-discriminatory reason to cancel the meeting for the Arab American cultural and educational group, the complaint said.

“Simply stated, amidst an ongoing war in the Middle East, the hotel did not want an Arab group — in this instance, the Foundation — to have its event at the DoubleTree,” the complaint said. “This was the first time in years that the DoubleTree had canceled an event against the wishes of the customer.”

The owner, AWH Orlando Property, denied the allegations and didn’t admit liability. Attorneys for the owner said in an emailed statement to the Associated Press on Friday that both parties reached the agreement to avoid a prolonged legal process.

“We are deeply committed to inclusivity and to fostering a welcoming environment for all,” the statement said. “As part of this commitment, we continue to implement proactive measures, including regular training on diversity, equity, and inclusion, while striving for continuous improvement and best practices.”

Under the terms of the Justice Department agreement, the hotel must issue a statement within a month to the Arab America Foundation making it clear that it welcomes all guests regardless of race, color, religion or national origin. The hotel also must adopt a written anti-discrimination policy and reach out to at least five Arab or Arab American groups to let them know the hotel is open to all members of the public, according to the agreement.

The agreement, which was reached immediately after the Justice Department’s complaint was filed, must be approved by a federal judge.

“The right to enjoy and have equal access to places of public accommodation is essential in our communities,” attorney Roger B. Handberg for the Middle District of Florida said in a statement.  “The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District will continue to hold places of public accommodation accountable to ensure that the civil rights of all people are protected.”

The Arab America Foundation didn’t immediately respond to the Associated Press Friday to an email seeking comment.

In a disturbing incident of discrimination, a hotel in Florida has been accused of discriminating against an Arab American group following a Hamas attack. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched an investigation into the matter, which has sparked outrage and concern within the Arab American community.

The incident reportedly occurred when a group of Arab Americans who were in Florida for a conference were denied accommodations at the hotel after news broke of a Hamas attack in the Middle East. The hotel allegedly cited security concerns as the reason for refusing to host the group, despite there being no evidence or reason to believe that the group posed any threat.

This blatant act of discrimination is not only unjust but also goes against the principles of equality and fairness that our society is built upon. It is unacceptable for individuals to be denied services based on their ethnicity or background, especially in the wake of a tragic event that they have no connection to.

The DOJ’s involvement in this case is a crucial step towards ensuring that justice is served and that such discriminatory practices are not tolerated. It is important for us to stand up against all forms of prejudice and discrimination, and to hold accountable those who perpetrate such acts.

As we await further developments in this case, let us remember the importance of treating all individuals with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or beliefs. Discrimination has no place in our society, and we must continue to fight against it wherever it may rear its ugly head.

  • Florida hotel discriminated against Arab American group after Oct 7 attack: DOJ

A hotel owner in the tourist district of Orlando, Florida has reached an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department over a discrimination lawsuit filed against the resort after it canceled a planned conference for an Arab American group in the aftermath of Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

In the complaint filed Thursday, the DOJ accused AWH Orlando Property, the owner of DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Orlando at SeaWorld, of discrimination on the basis of national origin when it canceled hosting an annual summit held by the Arab America Foundation in November 2023.

The DOJ said there had been no threats or specific risks to the hotel in connection with the summit and that there was not any other non-discriminatory reason to cancel the meeting for the Arab American cultural and educational group.

The owner denied the allegations and did not admit liability. Attorneys for the owner said in a statement that the owner and the DOJ reached the agreement, which was reached immediately after the complaint was filed, to avoid prolonged litigation.

“We are deeply committed to inclusivity and to fostering a welcoming environment for all,” the statement read. “As part of this commitment, we continue to implement proactive measures, including regular training on diversity, equity, and inclusion, while striving for continuous improvement and best practices.”

AWH Partners said it has “no control, say, input, or involvement” in the management or operations of the hotel because it is a passive, limited-partner investor.

Under the terms of the agreement, the hotel must issue a statement within a month to the Arab America Foundation making it clear that it welcomes all guests regardless of race, color, religion or national origin.

The hotel must also adopt a written anti-discrimination policy and contact at least five Arab or Arab American groups to notify them that the hotel welcomes all members of the public.

The agreement still must be approved by a federal judge.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

On October 7th, a group of Arab Americans were looking forward to a relaxing stay at a hotel in Florida. However, their stay turned into a nightmare when they were discriminated against after the tragic attack that occurred on that same day.

The Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the incident, where the hotel allegedly treated the group of Arab Americans unfairly based on their ethnicity. The group was subjected to discriminatory treatment, including being denied access to certain amenities and services that were freely available to other guests.

This type of discrimination is not only unacceptable but also illegal. Hotels, like all businesses, are required to treat all guests equally and fairly regardless of their background or ethnicity.

The Department of Justice is committed to holding the hotel accountable for their actions and ensuring that all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. Discrimination has no place in our society, and it is important to stand up against it whenever and wherever it occurs.

We must continue to fight against discrimination and strive for a more inclusive and welcoming society for all. Let this incident serve as a reminder that we must always be vigilant in protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals, no matter their background.

  • Australia antisemitic attack: Authorities vow action after cars torched, home vandalized in Sydney

    Brisbane, Australia
    CNN
     —

Four vehicles and the former home of a Jewish community leader were defaced in Sydney early Friday, with two cars set alight, in the latest antisemitic attack condemned by Australian authorities, who vowed to “hunt down” the perpetrators.

The attack in Dover Heights, one of the Australian city’s exclusive eastern suburbs, is among more than 100 being investigated by Operation Avalite, a special taskforce created in early December to counter rising antisemitism.

It targeted the former residence of Alex Ryvchin, the co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), who has repeatedly urged the government to do more to address attacks on members of the Jewish community, which have flared up since the start of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

Images showed red paint splashed on the home’s exterior, and the words “F*** Jews” were written on the side of a car partially destroyed by fire.

Ryvchin told reporters it wasn’t clear if his family was the target of the attack, but if not, the choice to spray paint that particular home was “one hell of a coincidence.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told CNN affiliate ABC Radio Friday the attack is “against everything that we stand for.”

“What we need to do is to lower the temperature in the community,” Albanese said.

A resident inspects the burnt out remains of a car in Dover Heights, Sydney, Friday, January 17, 2025.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke joined the chorus of condemnation from government ministers, calling the attack a “hate crime” that comes with “serious criminal penalties.”

“We have our best agencies working to make sure that these people are hunted down … Nobody should think that anything that is happening anywhere around the world gives them the right to conduct a hate crime in Australia,” Burke said.

Friday’s attack comes just days after red swastikas were daubed on two synagogues in the Sydney suburbs of Allawah and Newtown.

Two suspects dressed in black were caught on closed-circuit video cameras outside Newtown Synagogue, according to police in the state of New South Wales (NSW), of which Sydney is the capital.

Images released by police show two figures apparently leaving the scene on a pushbike and electric scooter. Police allege they also tried to light a fire.

Police released CCTV images after offensive graffiti was sprayed on a synagogue in Sydney’s Inner West on Saturday, January 11, during which police believe an arson attempt was also made.

A spate of antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne prompted the government to assign a special taskforce to address the problem.

Operation Avalite filed its first charges Thursday, against a 44-year-old man who allegedly made death threats via social media directed at the Australian Jewish Association.

The Avalite team of 20 officers and analysts, including counter-terrorism investigators, are investigating dozens of antisemitic attacks dating back to October 2023.

They include an arson attack on Melbourne’s Adass Israel synagogue, which was gutted by fire in early December – and led to a security upgrade outside Jewish schools, community centers and places of worship.

“No Australian should have to go to bed filled with apprehension about hate crimes being perpetrated overnight, said David Ossip, president of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies Friday.

The destroyed interior of the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne.

Standing alongside Ossip, NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley directly addressed the perpetrators of Friday’s attack: “We will hunt you down, we will find you and we will lock you up.”

Chris Minns, the state premier, said laws would be strengthened next month to protect places of worship, including the Great Synagogue in Sydney’s central business district.

He said hate laws would also be tightened, to stamp out antisemitism before it progresses to the firebombing of synagogues and other religious sites.

“The truth of the matter is that incidents of antisemitism, violent behavior are increasing in our community, and collectively, as a community, as a society, we have to stand together to condemn it unambiguously and send a clear message to these animals that these actions will not be tolerated,” he said.

Israel’s onslaught on Gaza after the Hamas-led cross-border attack on October 7, 2023 has deepened divisions within Australian society.

Almost every weekend since the start of the conflict, thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters have marched through Sydney to call for a ceasefire.

The Australian government has welcomed an agreement that mediators say would see a pause in fighting in Gaza and lead to the phased release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

“Australians want to see the conflict end,” Albanese said Friday. “They want to see hostages released. They want to see people being able to live in peace and security – whether that be Israelis or Palestinians. And they don’t want to see conflict brought here to Australia.”

In a recent disturbing incident of antisemitism in Sydney, Australia, multiple cars were torched and a home was vandalized in what authorities are calling a hate-motivated attack. The Jewish community in Sydney is reeling from this targeted act of violence, which has sparked outrage and concern among residents.

The New South Wales Police Force has vowed to take swift and decisive action to apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime. In a statement, they condemned the attack as “completely unacceptable” and assured the community that they are working diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Premier of New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian, also expressed her shock and dismay at the incident, stating that there is no place for hate or intolerance in Australian society. She pledged to work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of all residents, regardless of their background or beliefs.

As the investigation into this antisemitic attack continues, it is crucial for the community to stand together in solidarity against such acts of hatred and bigotry. We must send a clear message that antisemitism will not be tolerated in Australia, and that those who perpetrate such crimes will be held accountable for their actions.

Let us all join hands in condemning this despicable act and reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and tolerant society, where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. Together, we can combat antisemitism and ensure that all Australians can live free from fear and discrimination. #NoToAntisemitism #UnityAgainstHate
