The Taliban take over Afghanistan’s only luxury hotel, more than a decade after attacking it
The Taliban are taking over the operations of Afghanistan’s only luxury hotel in Kabul, more than a decade after they launched a deadly attack there that killed nine people.
The Serena Hotel said Friday it was closing its operations in the Afghan capital on Feb. 1, with the Hotel State Owned Corporation taking over. The corporation is overseen by the finance ministry.
The finance ministry wasn’t immediately available for comment. Neither the Serena nor the government clarified the terms under which the hotel was changing hands.
The Taliban first targeted the Serena in 2008 and again in 2014. Acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani acknowledged planning the 2008 attack, which killed eight, including U.S. citizen Thor David Hesla.
A statement from the Serena, a brand owned by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, said it had trained thousands of Afghan nationals, hosted large numbers of foreign guests and delegations, and set high international benchmarks in hospitality standards.
It asked people to direct their queries to the Hotel State Owned Corporation. Kabul no longer appears as a destination on the Serena website.
According to information on the finance ministry website, the corporation’s mission is to revive and develop Afghanistan’s hotel industry. It operates three other hotels in Afghanistan, two in Kabul and one in the eastern city of Nangarhar.
Tourism official Mohammad Saeed told The Associated Press last year that he wanted Afghanistan to become a tourism powerhouse.
At that time, in a sign the country was preparing for more overseas visitors, the Serena reopened its women’s spa and salon for foreign females after a monthslong closure, only to shut them again under pressure from authorities.
The Taliban have barred women from gyms, public spaces including parks, and education. Last year, they ordered the closure of beauty salons, allegedly because they offered services forbidden by Islam.
In a shocking turn of events, the Taliban have reportedly taken over Afghanistan’s only luxury hotel, the Serena Hotel, more than a decade after they first attacked it.The Serena Hotel, located in the heart of Kabul, has long been a symbol of luxury and sophistication in the war-torn country. However, with the Taliban’s recent takeover of the capital city, the hotel has now fallen into the hands of the militant group.
This news comes as a devastating blow to the people of Afghanistan, who had hoped for a brighter future after years of conflict and instability. The Serena Hotel was seen as a beacon of hope and progress in a country plagued by violence and turmoil.
It remains to be seen what the Taliban’s plans are for the hotel, but many fear that its luxurious amenities and Western influence will be erased in favor of the group’s strict interpretation of Islamic law.
As the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, the takeover of the Serena Hotel serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the country and its people. The international community must act swiftly to support those affected by the Taliban’s resurgence and work towards a peaceful and stable future for Afghanistan.

Arsenal make shock bid for Ollie Watkins: Aston Villa reject offer for star striker as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking force before the transfer window slams shut
Arsenal have launched a stunning swoop for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins ahead of next week’s transfer deadline.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is a long-term admirer of the England international and the club have now moved for the 29-year-old.
It is understood Arsenal have made an initial offer for Watkins which has been rejected but an improved attempt is expected.
Watkins still has three years to run on his existing deal at Villa Park and is a key player for Unai Emery’s side.
However, a move to Arsenal may appeal to Watkins, who has admitted he grew up as an Arsenal fan.
Whilst playing for Brentford, the forward said in 2020: ‘That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day. But, you know, it’s a long shot.’
Arsenal have seen a shock bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins rejected by the club
Mikel Arteta’s side are keen to bolster their attacking options in the January transfer window
Watkins found the back of the net during Aston Villa’s recent 2-2 draw with Arsenal
The 29-year-old played a vital role in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final during the summer
Nevertheless, Emirates chiefs have identified the forward as the man they believe can ignite their title challenge as they look to haul down Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.
Villa, however, will believe they are in a strong position given Watkins’ contractual situation and it remains to be seen whether the Gunners can successfully pull off what would be one of the most eye-catching transfers of the January window.
Watkins has scored 10 goals in 31 appearances for Villa this season, one of those coming in the recent 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates.
In a surprising turn of events, Arsenal have made a shock bid for Aston Villa’s star striker Ollie Watkins. The Gunners are looking to bolster their attacking force before the transfer window slams shut, and have identified Watkins as a top target. However, Aston Villa have swiftly rejected Arsenal’s offer for the talented forward, with manager Dean Smith determined to hold onto his key player. Watkins has been in impressive form for Villa since joining from Brentford last season, and has caught the eye of several top clubs with his performances.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add more firepower to his squad, and sees Watkins as a perfect fit for his attacking system. The Gunners have struggled for goals in recent seasons, and Arteta is hopeful that Watkins could provide the cutting edge they have been missing.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will make an improved offer for Watkins, or if they will turn their attention to other targets in the final days of the transfer window. But one thing is for sure – the Gunners are determined to strengthen their squad as they look to challenge for silverware this season.

Jim Gaffigan regrets Trump supporters thinking he was attacking them
Superstar stand-up comic Jim Gaffigan recently weighed in on his previous anti-Trump social media posts from 2020, saying he regrets that supporters of President-elect Donald Trump took his criticism personally.
Gaffigan, who recently played former Democratic vice presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., on “Saturday Night Live,” discussed his negative feelings surrounding the old tweets in a new interview with “The Daily Beast.”
“I regret that people think that I was criticizing people that support Trump. And that was never the intention. I regret – someone said like, now I can’t follow you anymore and I kind of said ‘F you’ to them,” the comedian stated.
Gaffigan lashed out at Trump in a series of tweets back in 2020, when X was still on Twitter and Trump was running for re-election.
In one, he wrote, “Look Trumpers I get it. As a kid I was a cubs fan and I know you stick by your team no matter what but he’s a traitor and a con man who doesn’t care about you. Deep down you know it. I’m sure you enjoy pissing people off but you know Trump is a liar and a criminal.”
In another, he bashed Trump for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, writing, “You know Trump just creates enemies. You know you can’t trust him. You know he been incompetent during this crisis. You know all those people didn’t need to die. Trump talks about the Space Program and you can’t safely go to a movie. Wake up.”

“But it’s weird because I think authenticity is really an important thing, not only as a comedian, but also with your children,” he said, adding, “For me, I don’t regret it, but I also do acknowledge that there are true die-hard Trump fans who probably enjoyed my comedy, but because they feel so passionately will never forgive me.”
Gaffigan went on to acknowledge that alienating people in such a way is just part of being a comedian.

But there are going to be people who are like, you know, ‘I don’t have kids, I think he’s funny, but I don’t get this.’”
When asked if he felt as if he had lost many fans following those posts, he replied, “I wouldn’t say it was measurable. But there were definitely comments on social media, and there are still some. My son, who’s so funny — I posted something, and my 18-year-old son commented, ‘I liked him until he went on his Trump rant.’”
The outlet also asked the comedian how he felt about the flak he got for performing at the recent Al Smith Dinner in New York City. During his set, Gaffigan took shots at Trump, who was in attendance that evening, and at Vice President Kamala Harris, who declined the invite.
“So I knew that if I did jokes about either side that there was going to be some blowback. But I also thought it was worth it,” Gaffigan said. Getty Images He remarked on being slammed by liberals who accused him of making light of Trump in the routine.
“I was ‘normalizing a fascist,’ right? I knew going into it that I was going to get criticism from both sides. I’m not a roast comedian. I mean, I love politics, but I just don’t talk about it,” he said.

Comedian Jim Gaffigan recently took to social media to express his regret over some Trump supporters feeling attacked by his comments. Gaffigan, known for his clean and family-friendly humor, has been vocal about his disapproval of former President Donald Trump and his policies. In a series of tweets, Gaffigan clarified that his criticism was not aimed at Trump supporters as individuals, but rather at the divisive and harmful rhetoric coming from the Trump administration. He emphasized that he respects differing political views and believes in the importance of civil discourse.
Gaffigan also acknowledged that comedy can be a powerful tool for addressing important issues and sparking dialogue, but he expressed his regret that some Trump supporters may have felt alienated or offended by his comments.
As a comedian who aims to bring joy and laughter to his audience, Gaffigan’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding in today’s polarized political climate. It’s a lesson that we can all benefit from, regardless of our political affiliations.

It is unclear if police were called to the fast food restaurant and if the staff members involved in the fight have faced repercussions.
DailyMail.com contacted Jack in the Box for comment.
In a shocking display of entitlement and aggression, a hulking Karen was caught on camera attacking Jack in the Box staff after they forgot to include her curly fries in her order. The video, which has since gone viral, shows the enraged woman towering over the terrified employees, screaming and throwing punches.Witnesses say that the Karen had demanded her curly fries be added to her order after discovering they were missing, but when the staff explained that they had run out and offered her a refund or alternative side, she exploded in a fit of rage.
The confrontation quickly escalated as the Karen began physically assaulting the staff, knocking over displays and causing chaos in the restaurant. However, her reign of terror was short-lived as a brave customer stepped in to defend the employees and restrain the out-of-control woman until police arrived.
The Karen now faces assault charges and a lifetime ban from the fast-food chain. Let this serve as a warning to all entitled customers: violence is never the answer, especially over a side of curly fries.
