Brisbane International and United Cup live: Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka among headline acts

    United Cup: Gauff up next

Coming up next on RAC Arena in Perth is US Open reigning champion Coco Gauff for Team USA against Donna Vekic of Croatia.

On day three of the United Cup, world No. 3 Gauff had a comprehensive win over former US Open finalist Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 6-2.

Brisbane International: Sabalenka gets an early break

Aryna Sabalenka’s game is finding its groove as she begins her tournament in Brisbane.

Sabalenka already has a service break against Renata Zarazúa to lead 3-0 in the first set.

To her credit, Zarazúa did have a break point in the third game, but Sabalenka eventually held serve.

The world number one will be bidding to win a third consecutive Australian Open when she arrives at Melbourne Park next month.

    United Cup: Fritz defeats Coric

Taylor Fritz of team USA plays a forehand.(Getty)

The scoreline doesn’t reflect just how hard Croatia’s Borna Coric made USA’s Taylor Fritz work for that victory.

The American claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win for Team USA, but it was a tough match under the sun in Perth at RAC Arena.

Brisbane International: Sabalenka takes to Pat Rafter Arena

World number one Aryna Sabalenka is on court for her opening match in Brisbane.

The two-time defending Australian Open champion is playing Mexican Renata Zarazúa on Pat Rafter Arena.

Sabalenka enjoyed a bye in the first round.

We’ll keep you updated throughout the match.

Canberra International: Jones exits at the hands of Jacquemot

Gun Australian junior Emerson Jones is out of the Canberra International following a straight-sets defeat to France’s Elsa Jacquemot.

Jones can take away much from her performance against the experienced Jacquemot, who won 6-2, 6-3 to reach the round of 16.

Sixteen-year-old Jones is coming off a stellar junior season in which she was runner-up at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Oksana Selekhmeteva, Alexandra Eala, Mananchaya Sawangkaew and Aoi Ito also moved through to the round of 16.

Brisbane International: Paola Badosa crashes out in three sets

    (Getty Images)

Disappointing result for the number four seed Spaniard, who falls to a three-set defeat to Elina Avanesyan that took over two hours on Pat Rafter Arena.

Avanesyan, the world number 43 from Armenia, won 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in a bit of a boil over against the number 12-ranked 27-year-old.

Badosa never looked comfortable on her serve, and ended up ending the match with a double fault, a meek way for her to fall.

    United Cup: Paolini dominates Pacquet

Jasmine Paolini of Italy plays a forehand.(Getty)

Well, that was another impressive day out for Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, who ran France’s Chloe Paquet off the court with a 6-0, 6-2. She had the match wrapped up in an hour.

Paquet managed to get on the board in the second set, winning two games, but Paolini controlled the tempo of the match from start to finish.

Plenty of Italian flags being waved in the air at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney. They know they’ve got a star here.

United Cup: Fritz takes first set

He had to fight for it, but USA’s Taylor Fritz has claimed the first set against Croatia’s Borna Coric 6-3.

It’s hot in Perth, with Coric trying to find some shade between points. It’s making me want an iced tea just watching them sweat under the blazing sun.

Canberra International: Teenager Jones on court in the capital

One of the rising stars of Australian tennis, Emerson Jones, has a fight on her hands at the Canberra International.

The 16-year-old lost the first set to France’s Elsa Jacquemot 6-2.

She was broken twice by Jacquemot, who is ranked 159 in the world.

Jones, who hails from the Gold Coast, has enjoyed an outstanding junior career.

She reached the singles finals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon juniors this year.

Jones is ranked 373 on the WTA standings.

Brisbane International: Sebastian Korda pulls out

    (Getty Images)

Rough news for Sebastian Korda this morning, the American number five seed is out of the tournament with a lower back issue.

Dušan Lajović, the Serbian world number 81, who has been ranked as high as 23, will take his place.

He gets to take on French world number 63 Arthur Cazaux.

Brisbane International: Badosa levels at a set apiece

Paula Badosa plays a double-fisted backhand.

Paula Badosa didn’t waste much time in wrapping up the second set against Elina Avanesyan.

The Spaniard won the second 6-1 to force a deciding set.

Avanesyan had earlier claimed the first 6-3.

United Cup: Paolini cruises through first set

Italy’s Jasmine Paolini made light work of France’s Chloe Paquet, winning the first set 6-0.

This match could be wrapped up very quickly.

Jasmine Paolini of Italy celebrates a point.(Getty)

It’s pretty wild to think Paolini, now the world No.4, had never made it past the first round of the grand slam until the Australian Open last year.

    She’s right up there now.

A good day for the Italians

    All Italian tennis fans today:

A little Italy fan cheers on Jasmine Paolini of Italy.(Getty)

In Sydney, Flavio Cobolli defeated France’s Ugo Humbert on day five of the United Cup to send Team Italy to the quarterfinals, while Jasmine Paolini is storming through the first set against Chloe Paquet 4-0.

Meanwhile, over at the Brisbane International, Matteo Arnaldi sent Aussie Alexei Popyrin packing with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Brisbane International: Popyrin departs in straight sets

Not the news Australian tennis fans want to hear but …

Alexei Popyrin has exited the Brisbane International following a straight-sets loss to Italian Matteo Arnaldi.

Arnaldi advances with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the seventh seed.

Popyrin looked sluggish but nothing can be taken away from Arnaldi, who held serve throughout the match while breaking his opponent three times.

    Brisbane International: Badosa bouncing back

Losing the first set may have been the spark Paula Badosa needed in her clash with Elina Avanesyan.

Fourth-seeded Badosa has raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set.

    Avanesyan won the first, 6-3.

United Cup: Paolini back on court

World No.4 Italy’s Jasmine Paolini dominated Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic with a crushing 6-1, 6-1 win on day three of the United Cup.

Now, she’s back on court to face France’s Chloe Paquet, ranked 96th in the world.

Giving that ranking differential, we could see Paolini running another muck in Sydney. But anything can happen in tennis.

Italy’s Jasmine Paolini dominated Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic (Getty)

And there’s a lot on the line for France. They can still progress to the quarterfinals if they finish with the highest rank of the second placers in each group.

Meanwhile, USA’s Taylor Fritz is on court against Croatia’s Borna Coric on RAC Arena.

Brisbane International: Popyrin facing uphill battle

Alexei Popyrin is down a break in the second set against Matteo Arnaldi.

Arnaldi will serve at 3-2, having earlier won the first 6-3.

    Auckland Open: Keys comfortably advances

    Madison Keys plays a forehand.

Top seed Madison Keys has progressed to the round of 16 across the Tasman with a straight-sets victory over Italian Lucia Bronzetti.

    Keys won 6-4, 6-4.

The world number 21 posted four aces on her way to victory, while landing 70 per cent of her first serves.

The American will play Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian in the next round.

Cristian moved through after her Ukrainian opponent Yuliia Starodubtseva was forced to retire in the second set of their match.

Brisbane International: Badosa on the back foot

Paula Badosa will have to win in three sets if she is advance to the next round in Brisbane.

The fourth seed was broken late in the first set by Elina Avanesyan, who has claimed a 6-3 advantage.

Brisbane International: Popyrin drops first set

Alexei Popyrin has some work to do if he is to keep his Brisbane International campaign alive.

The Australian seventh seed lost the first set to Matteo Arnaldi, who broke his opponent in the eighth game.

Arnaldi held serve in the following game to claim the set 6-3.

The Italian 23-year-old is ranked 37 on the ATP standings.

He was as high as 30 in August last year.

  • ‘Captain Cry Baby’: Australian media tears into Rohit Sharma after ‘Clown Kohli’ controversy over blow-up at Jaiswal

‘Captain Cry Baby’: Australian media tears into Rohit Sharma after ‘Clown Kohli’ controversy over blow-up at Jaiswal

Australian media sowed no mercy to India’s senior batter Virat Kohli over the Sam Konstas incident at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last week, but they have moved on from the former India captain and found a new target in Rohit Sharma. In a fresh attack from the same publication, the incumbent skipper was humiliated over his blow-up at Yashasvi Jaiswal on Sunday during the fourth Test match against Australia.

Australian media tears into Rohit Sharma over blow-up at Yashasvi Jaiswal

Day 4 witnessed a see-saw battle between India and Australia. While Jasprit Bumrah single-handedly brought the tourists back into the game with three quick wickets in the afternoon session, where Australia were reduced to six down for 91, the hosts bounced back following a impressive fifty from Marnus Labuschagne, followed by a gritty fifty-run stand between Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland.

During the opening two sessions, Jaiswal incurred a forgettable time on the field as he dropped as many as three catches. Yet, it was Rohit who came under the scanner for his reaction when his opening partner dropped Labuschagne on 47. The 37-year-old fumed at Jaiswal and threw his hands in frustration. Later, he even let out a scream when the youngster dropped Pat Cummins.

The reaction did not go down well with either the commentators or the Australian media. The West Australian, the same publication who had taken a dig at Kohli, calling him ‘Clown,’ blasted Rohit on Sunday as they went with the headline: “Captain Cry Baby” – surrounding the same incident. The slug further read: “Turns out Kohli isn’t the only sook in Indian side.”

Rohit Sharma criticised for Jaiswal act

Former Australia cricketer Mike Hussey slammed Rohit for berating Jaiswal as ex-England captain Michael Vaughan pointed out late on Day 4 that India had a big task at hand in getting Jaiswal in the right mindset for the mighty chase.

“I’ve got to be honest, I don’t like that reaction from the Indian skipper,” Hussey said on Fox Cricket. “I appreciate he’s emotional, and he desperately wants wickets, but you’re the one who has to send the message of calm and support… He’s gonna feel bad enough as it is for putting a catch down, especially someone like Marnus Labuschagne, it happens quickly… you don’t need to see that as a young player.”

Aussie star Alyssa Healy added: “Particularly when you need him to walk out and open the batting alongside you, to make some runs and try and win a Test match for your country.” Former Aussie cricketer Darren Berry tweeted: “You gotta feel for the kid Jaiswal has dropped 3 catches today. He might have dropped 3 crucial chances, the game & the series. His only answer is a match winning innings… (he) needs a pat on the back from his senior players not (to be) berated.”‍️

In a scathing article titled ‘Captain Cry Baby’, Australian media has ripped into Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma after his controversial outburst at young batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal during a recent match.

The incident, which occurred during the IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, saw Sharma losing his cool and shouting at Jaiswal after a misunderstanding in the field. The Indian captain’s behavior has been widely criticized, with many labelling him as ‘Captain Cry Baby’.

This latest controversy comes hot on the heels of the ‘Clown Kohli’ incident, where Sharma was seen mocking his Indian teammate Virat Kohli during a match. The Australian media has not held back in their criticism of Sharma, with one publication describing him as a ‘petulant child throwing a tantrum’.

Sharma’s behavior has been met with disdain from fans and pundits alike, with many calling for him to be reprimanded by the IPL authorities. It remains to be seen how the Indian captain will respond to the backlash, but one thing is for sure – his reputation has taken a significant hit in the eyes of the cricketing world.

British tennis star Katie Boulter has announced her engagement to Australian ace Alex de Minaur.

Boulter, 28, has been with 25-year-old De Minaur for more than four years and on Monday morning shared a picture of the couple together – with a ring showing on her finger.

Great Britain and Australia have been drawn in the same group for the tournament.

She recently told Sky Sports News she “wouldn’t say I am thrilled at the idea of playing him all over again”, with De Minaur ranked number nine in the world.

“Obviously, he is a top-10 player, he knows how to play tennis,” she said, while adding she is “looking forward” to the match.

“There’s a personal side of it as well, which is difficult but also great for bragging rights.”

Boulter, ranked 24 in the world and Britain’s female number one, previously said they have “helped each other in so many different ways”.

“I don’t know if he takes it well from me but he knows what he’s doing. He’s been around the sport for so long, even though he’s so young.

“He’s got such great experience and he’s already been through so much.”

Ravi Shastri slams Australian media as Virat Kohli faces heat after shoulder-bumping incident | Cricket News

Ravi Shastri slams Australian media as Virat Kohli faces heat after shoulder-bumping incident

NEW DELHI: During the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Indian cricketer Virat Kohli was involved in a shoulder-bumping incident with Australian debutant Sam Konstas. This incident has drawn considerable attention from the Australian media.
Kohli received a 20% fine of his match fee for the altercation and one demerit point. However, some, including former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, believe a stricter penalty was warranted.
Scorecard: India vs Australia, 4th Test
Even before the match, Kohli was already under significant media scrutiny Down Under. He was surrounded by journalists at the airport, and one reportedly tried to take an unauthorized photo of him and his family.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri criticized the Australian media’s coverage of Kohli, describing it as “desperation.”

Sam Konstas on Kohli altercation: ‘I was doing my gloves, he accidentally bumped me’

“You are three Test matches into the series, the scoreline is 1-1. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is still undecided. If Australia had been leading 3-0 or even 2-0, the narrative might have been different. But now, the entire country, including the media, is behind the team, pushing hard for a win in Melbourne,” Shastri said on Star Sports.
Shastri believes the Australian media used the shoulder-bump incident to target Kohli.
“When the physical contact happened, it was like, ‘this is our chance.’ They brought out the fangs and the paintbrush to create a larger story,” he added.

Abhishek Nayar explains reason for dropping Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma’s place

The incident has highlighted the intense competition in the series. Shastri suggests the media’s reaction reflects the pressure on the Australian team to win back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The pressure on both teams to perform well is immense. The media scrutiny adds another layer of complexity to this rivalry.

Ravi Shastri, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has come out in defense of captain Virat Kohli amidst the controversy surrounding the shoulder-bumping incident with Australian captain Tim Paine. In a scathing attack on the Australian media, Shastri slammed them for blowing the incident out of proportion and trying to tarnish Kohli’s reputation.

Speaking to reporters, Shastri said, “The Australian media has always had a biased view towards Virat Kohli and they have once again resorted to sensationalizing a minor incident. It is clear that there was no malice or intent from Virat’s side, yet they are trying to make it seem like he is the villain in this situation.”

The incident occurred during the second Test match between India and Australia, where Kohli was seen shoulder-bumping Paine while exchanging words on the field. Despite both players downplaying the incident and moving on, the Australian media has continued to criticize Kohli for his behavior.

Shastri also praised Kohli for his leadership qualities and his passion for the game, stating, “Virat is a fierce competitor and he plays the game with his heart on his sleeve. He is a great leader who always stands up for his team and his country. The Australian media should focus on the cricket being played on the field rather than creating unnecessary controversies.”

As Kohli faces heat from the Australian media, it is clear that he has the full support of his coach and teammates. The Indian cricket team will look to put the incident behind them and focus on the upcoming matches in the series.

  • Shastri calls Australian media ‘desperate’ for ‘targeting’ Virat Kohli: ‘If it was 3-0, headlines would be different’

Shastri calls Australian media ‘desperate’ for ‘targeting’ Virat Kohli: ‘If it was 3-0, headlines would be different’

Virat Kohli faced the brunt of Australian media following the shoulder-bumping incident with 19-year-old Australian debutant, Sam Konstas, during the Boxing Day Test on Thursday. The India great was fined 20 percent of his match-fees for the incident, although many Aussie media outlets, and even former cricketers like Ricky Ponting, called for a harsher punishment.

Ravi Shastri spoke in detail about the coverage surrounding Virat Kohli in Australian media(File/AP)

The lead-up to the Melbourne Test saw Virat Kohli firmly in the spotlight, with much of the attention coming from the Australian media. At the airport before the match, Kohli was surrounded by journalists, and the situation took an uncomfortable turn when a reporter seemingly tried to snap a photo of Kohli with his family.

This incident, coupled with the altercation involving 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas and the intense media coverage directed at Kohli, has sparked a strong response from former India head coach Ravi Shastri. Visibly frustrated by the treatment of the Indian star, Shastri suggested that the Australian media was showing signs of “desperation.”

Shastri believes the Australian media wouldn’t have reacted as strongly to the controversy had their team led the series 3-0, or even 2-0.

“It’s a little bit of desperation. You are three Test matches into the series, the scoreline is 1-1. The Border-Gavaskar trophy is still not yours. You want to win in Melbourne. I’ve been to Australia many times, the whole country comes behind the team. Not just the crowd, the media… everyone,” Shastri told Star Sports.

“I’m not surprised. That’s why I said it’s a sense of desperation. If Australia had already been 3-0 or 2-0 up, the headlines might have been different.”

Someone had to be the target

Shastri stated that Australian media targeted Virat Kohli and pounced on him following the shoulder-bumping incident.

“When you want to win badly… it not so often a country comes to Australia and win a series for 7-8 years. I know where it’s coming from, it has been there for a period of time, someone had to be the target, and they got the opportunity with the physical incident yesterday.

“When the physical contact happened, they were like, ‘this is our chance to get the fangs out, get the paintbrush out’ and start doing all sort of things,” said Shastri further.

Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri has hit out at the Australian media for their coverage of Virat Kohli during the ongoing Test series between India and Australia. In a recent press conference, Shastri called the Australian media ‘desperate’ for ‘targeting’ Kohli and suggested that if the series scoreline was 3-0 in favor of India, the headlines would be different.

Shastri’s comments come after several Australian media outlets have criticized Kohli for his on-field behavior and tactics during the series. The Indian captain has been involved in a number of heated exchanges with the Australian players, particularly with captain Tim Paine.

Shastri defended Kohli, stating that the Australian media is trying to create controversy and distract from the actual cricket being played on the field. He also pointed out that if India was leading the series 3-0, the headlines would be focused on their dominant performance rather than on Kohli’s behavior.

The Indian team coach urged the media to focus on the cricket and not get distracted by the off-field drama. He reiterated that Kohli is a passionate player who always gives his all for the team and should be judged on his performances on the field.

As the series continues to heat up, it seems that the off-field drama is only adding to the excitement. Shastri’s comments serve as a reminder to focus on the cricket and let the players do the talking with their performances.

  • Virat Kohli dubbed ‘clown’ by Australian media after Konstas controversy; Ravi Shastri fires back

Virat Kohli dubbed ‘clown’ by Australian media after Konstas controversy; Ravi Shastri fires back

Former Indian captain and veteran cricketer Vira Kohli has come in the firing line after his altercation with debutant Sam Konstas in Melbourne. Australian newspaper “The West Australian” had headline reading, ‘Clown Kohli’ accompanied with the picture of Kohli with a clown’s nose. The article read, “Indian sook slammed for pathetic bump in teen’s dream Test debut.”. The word ‘sook’ in the Tasmanian region is used for a cowardly person, especially a crybaby.

Ravi Shastri reacts to Virat Kohli clown controversy:

Speaking on Star Sports, former Indian cricket team coach Ravi Shastri said, “You expect that in a home country. I wish our country would stand up for our players in situations like this in a bigger way. I am not surprised by this at all, simply because Australia hasn’t won here in 14–15 years. The last time they won a Test match at the MCG was in 2011. So, when they get an opportunity to go berserk, they will go berserk,”

“I’ve been to Australia many, many times. It’s like the whole country comes behind the team—not just the crowds, but the media as well. I am not surprised because I see that sense of desperation. If Australia had already been 3–0 or 2–0 up, the headlines might have been different.” Shastri added

    Virat Kohli fined by ICC:

Virat Kohli’s was reprimanded by many former cricketers for his altercation with Sam Konstas and even fined 20 percent of his match fees by the ICC.

In a statement on the incident, ICC said, “Virat Kohli has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee and awarded one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct,” the ICC said in a statement.

“No formal hearing was needed as Kohli accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Andy Pycroft,” the international cricketing body added

Virat Kohli, the Indian cricket captain, has been dubbed a ‘clown’ by Australian media after his controversial confrontation with Australian spinner Adam Zampa during the recent ODI match. The incident, which saw Kohli mockingly imitate Zampa’s bowling action, has caused quite a stir in the cricketing world.

In response to the criticism, Indian team coach Ravi Shastri has fired back at the Australian media, defending Kohli’s actions and dismissing the ‘clown’ label as unwarranted. Shastri pointed out that Kohli’s competitive spirit and passion for the game are what make him one of the best players in the world, and that his behavior on the field should not be misconstrued as clownish.

The incident has reignited tensions between the two cricketing nations, with fans and pundits on both sides weighing in on the controversy. While some have criticized Kohli for his behavior, others have praised him for his intensity and commitment to his team.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is for certain – Virat Kohli’s on-field antics are sure to keep cricket fans talking for a long time to come.
