Lola Kirke on Journey From Acting to Author, New Book
Lola Kirke felt as if her acting career was finally in the perfect place. She’d been booking roles — slowly but steadily — since her breakout in 2015’s Mistress America, and she was set to produce and star in her own series in addition to an exciting movie on the horizon. Then the pandemic hit, the projects stalled, her agency ICM merged with CAA, and she found herself getting dropped by her agents of more than a decade in a two-minute-long phone call.
“I hesitate to say this,” she says, hesitantly, “but I do feel like in a way it was the best thing that ever happened to me. The things I’ve discovered about myself from not getting what I want have been immense.”
Kirke learned, among other things, that she could write. She spent her newfound downtime trying different projects — first, a novel that used the stories of Ashley, Wynonna and Naomi Judd to explore the dynamics in her own family life (“It was basically just a recap of their Oprah Winfrey Network reality show,” she says with a laugh) and then autofiction that she published on Substack. A literary agent came across her work and offered her a contract for a book of personal essays — and so, on Jan. 28, Wild West Village hits shelves.
Though she was born in London, Kirke grew up in a brownstone in downtown Manhattan, where her rock star father (Simon Kirke played drums in Bad Company and Free) and fashion designer mother, Lorraine, led the sort of bohemian lifestyle that creates good art and deep trauma. Kirke uses self-deprecation and tenderness to reminisce in her writing on the ways her childhood shaped her and her famous sisters (Jemima became an actress best known for her role on Girls; Domino is a singer turned doula and is married to actor Penn Badgley). She describes wild parties, accidentally meeting Joan Didion while researching a middle school project, the experience of learning that her father had a second family, her sisters’ trips to rehab and her struggles with her own self-image. “My family has a comfort with being in the spotlight, and I felt very free when I was writing the book, but once it came time to share it with them, a lot of trepidation kicked in,” she says. “I’m still grappling with the ethics of it, but I don’t think anyone has a totally clear conscience about turning their life into art.”
Kirke also uses the pages of Wild West Village to examine her relationship with Hollywood. She came close to huge stardom on occasion, like a set of auditions for the starring role in Fifty Shades of Grey. “Obviously if I had gotten that, I would be dating Chris Martin,” she jokes while sipping a latte at a café in the East Village. “But I don’t think about that one very often, because it was so clearly the right choice on their part — I’m not actually cut out for that kind of life.”
She isn’t dissatisfied with what the industry has offered her, per se, but she has no illusions about the psychic damage it causes. She’s been developing a growing case of body dysmorphia that came to a head while filming a sex scene for the television adaptation of Lisa Taddeo’s blockbuster book Three Women; she hasn’t been able to bring herself to watch even a frame of the series. “As I’ve gotten older, there’s such a difference between the way I feel in the world and the way I look on TV,” she says. “It does feel like a useless and self-centered worry, but it’s been hard for me.”

Writing the book offered a reprieve from everything that, frankly, sucks about pursuing an acting career. The publishing industry is far less fickle than Hollywood — once you sell a manuscript, as long as you finish it, it will come to fruition. And more importantly, nobody cares what you look like or how much you weigh. Kirke realized, with a jolt, that when she met with Simon & Schuster, it was the first time she’d gone into any professional environment without having to present herself in a certain (read: slimming) way — she wore a bulky sweater.
“As an actor, I also always had to ask for permission to cut my hair, and lo and behold, anytime I cut it I wouldn’t work for a year,” she says, gesturing to her current bob. “I’ve really enjoyed the agency I have in my writing career. It’s fucking freeing.”
Though Kirke technically resides in Nashville now — her boyfriend, a music producer, is based there, and Kirke has been recording her own country music — she never gave up her apartment in New York, and she’s keeping one foot in the acting business, too. In April, she’ll appear in Ryan Coogler’s Jim Crow-era horror film Sinners (she worked on Wild West Village revisions during the movie’s night shoots in New Orleans).
“Sometimes I think Hollywood feels like being in a really new car,” she says. “It’s nice, and it works, but then if you spend too much time in it, you’re overwhelmed by the odor of the new car. I guess what I’m saying is it makes me sick, but there are also things I totally love about it.”
And for those moments, she’ll always have books.
Kirke’s new book is a collection of personal essays about growing up with a rock-star dad and designer mom in the West Village.

Children’s Book Author and Husband Abused Adopted Kids for Years Until 8-Year-Old’s Organ Failure Alerted Police
A Florida-based children’s book author and her husband are heading to prison after pleading guilty to abusing their adopted children.
On Monday, Jan. 13, Jennifer and Joseph Wolfthal pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse and neglect of a child with great bodily harm, according to a plea agreement obtained by PEOPLE.
The couple’s trial was supposed to start on Mon. Jan. 13, but they reached an agreement with prosecutors to plead guilty to the charges, local station WESH reports.
In exchange, prosecutors agreed to drop three counts of kidnapping faced by the couple.
Jennifer Wolfthal will be sentenced to 12 years in prison, while her husband will be sentenced to 10 years behind bars, according to the plea agreement.
Had the case gone to trial, the two faced more than 100 years in prison if convicted, the judge said in court, WESH reports.
“This plea and sentencing agreement ensures that the Wolfthals will spend significant time in prison while it protects the already-traumatized victims from the stress of having to testify,” the State Attorney’s office in Florida’s 18th judicial circuit said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “The State Attorney’s office made sure law enforcement and the children’s new guardian supported this sentence before it agreed to it.”
Jennifer is the author of the children’s book A Real Friend, which was removed from sale by its publisher.
The couple was arrested on child abuse charges on New Year’s Day in 2021, after Joseph brought their 8-year-old daughter to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with pneumonia, a staph infection and failure of the liver and kidneys, according to the arrest report obtained by WFTV.
The child was also malnourished, had multiple bruises, a skin infection and several open wounds, authorities said.
After Jennifer was released from custody on bond, she was arrested in late January on new charges of false imprisonment of a child under 13, PEOPLE confirmed.
The new charges came after investigators interviewed the couple’s children, who alleged that they were spanked to the point of bleeding, doused in cold water, and locked in their bedrooms, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
The children often went for months without bathing, and were seriously malnourished, the arrest report alleged.
One child allegedly told investigators that her parents “would take turns disciplining them,” and would “spank her in the same spot to the point of drawing blood.”
The police report says that the children claimed they were punished by being doused with cold water in their beds, and “left to sleep in that condition overnight.”
The couple adopted the children in 2014, according to a divorce filing, WFTV reported.
Attorneys for the two did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
If you suspect child abuse, call the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-Child or 1-800-422-4453, or go to www.childhelp.org. All calls are toll-free and confidential. The hotline is available 24/7 in more than 170 languages.
This is a tragic and heartbreaking story that highlights the importance of being vigilant and looking out for the well-being of children in our communities. It is deeply disturbing to think that someone who is supposed to care for and protect children could instead be inflicting such harm on them.As a children’s book author, this individual would have been in a position of influence and trust, making the abuse even more shocking. It is a stark reminder that abusers can come from any background and that we must always be on the lookout for signs of abuse and neglect.
The fact that the abuse went on for years before being discovered is a sobering reminder of how important it is for all of us to speak up if we suspect that a child is being mistreated. It is our responsibility as a society to protect the most vulnerable among us and to ensure that children are safe and cared for.
Our thoughts are with the children who have suffered at the hands of this abuser, and we hope that they are able to find healing and support as they recover from this traumatic experience. We also commend the brave individual who alerted the police to the abuse, as their actions likely saved lives and prevented further harm from occurring.

Florida children’s book author Jennifer Wolfthal, husband sentenced to prison for child abuse
A Florida children’s author – known for penning stories about friendship – was charged alongside her husband for abusing and neglecting their adopted children, authorities said.
Jennifer Wolfthal, the author of “A Real Friend,” and her husband, Joseph Wolfthal, an engineer for Lockheed Martin, pleaded guilty on Jan. 13 to aggravated child abuse and neglect of a child with great bodily harm, according to plea agreements obtained by Fox News Digital.
Jennifer Wolfthal will be sentenced to 12 years in prison, while her husband will be sentenced to 10 years behind bars, according to the plea agreement.
“This plea and sentencing agreement ensures that the Wolfthals will spend significant time in prison while it protects the already-traumatized victims from the stress of having to testify,” a spokesperson for the State Attorney’s Office in Florida’s 18th judicial circuit said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “The State Attorney’s office made sure law enforcement and the children’s new guardian supported this sentence before it agreed to it.”
The investigation into the couple was launched in 2021 after their then 8-year-old adopted daughter was brought to the hospital with organ failure, unconscious and covered in injuries.
The couple also had two other adopted children – a 9-year-old and 11-year-old.
Jennifer Wolfthal was sentenced to 12 years in prison for aggravated child abuse and neglect of a child with great bodily harm Seminole County Sheriff’s Office Joseph Wolfthal, an engineer for Lockheed Martin, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Seminole County Sheriff’s Office “Due to the height and weight of [the girl], it is not likely the swollen bruise on the back of her head and the laceration on her lip and broken tooth were caused by off balance falls,” the police report reads.
While the girl was in the hospital, investigators visited the family home and said they found two other children with “symptoms of malnourishment, bruises and lack of care.”
Police said the children’s bedrooms had their doorknobs installed backwards, with the locks on the outside.
During additional searches of the home, authorities found more than 1,100 written paragraphs reading: “My body stays flat on the bed at all times. I was never given permission to move or say anything. Now I get to write about this along with everything else. I am a fool.”
The book is still for sale on Amazon, but reviewers have been filling the comments with links to news articles about the allegations against the author.
Jennifer Wolfthal authored the children’s book “A Real Friend.” Amazon.com Authorities also shared that all three of the Wolfthals’ adopted children were subject to other horrifying tales of abuse. Following the investigation, the children were moved to live with another family.
Fox News Digital’s Michael Ruiz contributed to this report.
Florida children’s book author Jennifer Wolfthal and her husband have been sentenced to prison for child abuse. Wolfthal, known for her heartwarming stories that captivate young readers, has now found herself on the wrong side of the law.The couple was found guilty of subjecting their own children to physical and emotional abuse, leaving them with lasting scars that will take years to heal. The court heard heartbreaking testimonies from the victims, detailing the horrors they endured at the hands of their own parents.
As the sentencing was handed down, Wolfthal and her husband showed no remorse for their actions, further cementing their status as despicable individuals who have no place in society. It is a stark reminder that even those who appear to be pillars of the community can harbor dark secrets behind closed doors.
The case serves as a cautionary tale for all, reminding us to always be vigilant and protect the most vulnerable among us. As we navigate the complex world of parenting and relationships, let us never forget that the well-being of our children should always be our top priority.

In today’s world, the concept of masculinity is constantly evolving. As a society, we have come a long way in challenging traditional stereotypes and expectations placed on men. In my journey to redefine what it means to be a man, I have encountered many obstacles and moments of self-discovery.Growing up, I was taught to believe that to be a man meant to be strong, stoic, and unemotional. I was encouraged to suppress my feelings and conform to societal norms of masculinity. However, as I navigated through life, I realized that these expectations were limiting and harmful not only to myself but to those around me.
Through my experiences as an author, actor, and director, I have learned that true strength lies in vulnerability and authenticity. I have embraced my emotions, embraced my flaws, and embraced my humanity. I have learned that it is okay to cry, to express my feelings, and to seek help when needed.
I have also discovered the power of allyship and the importance of standing up for equality and justice. As a man, I have a responsibility to use my platform to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and advocate for positive change.
I invite all men to join me in redefining masculinity and embracing a new, more inclusive definition of manhood. Let us break free from the constraints of toxic masculinity and embrace our true selves. Let us show the world that real men are not afraid to be vulnerable, compassionate, and empathetic.
Together, we can create a more equitable and compassionate society for all. Let us redefine what it means to be “man enough.”

Boys Will Be Human // Amazon Q&A
1. Tell us about Boys Will Be Human. It’s a guidebook that will help boys ages 11 and up find the courage and confidence to embrace and express their feelings. For so long, boys have been taught that displaying our emotions is showing weakness and being “strong” means being an Alpha male. I know from experience these ideas can lead to so much anxiety and shame. Which is why this book talks openly and honestly about our feelings about everything from body image and sex to popularity and privilege. I also think it’s a great read for parents or teachers who want to understand what boys are going through and a jumping off point for tricky conversations about sensitive subjects.
2. Your first book, Man Enough, is for adults. What made you want to write a book for younger readers? While I love that Man Enough has started a long overdue discussion about masculinity in our culture, I kept thinking about how young boys could benefit if we talked about it before the idea of what it means to be man gets cemented in our minds and behavior. In fact, 11-year-old me really needed this book. I would have felt a lot less alone if I’d had it!
3. You talk about undefining masculinity instead of redefining it. What does that mean to you? Redefining masculinity would just be creating a new box that eventually we will need to break out of. What we need is the freedom to be whoever we think we are meant to be, not who others think we should be. Masculinity has become kind of a performative social contract. Like, I can only be masculine if everyone else agrees that I am masculine. The world would be a much kinder and inclusive place if anyone who identifies as a man were allowed to feel seen and be accepted for who they are.
4. How does the process of writing a book compare to acting in a television show or directing a movie? The biggest way they are similar is that the creative process for each of them requires deep introspection. For my books, I had to face and understand the parts of me that I’m ashamed of and share them with others in the hopes that they’d feel less alone. Another thing that’s similar is that after I write a book or make a movie, they don’t belong to me anymore—they belong to the audience.
5. Do you have a favorite part of the book? There are a lot of fun and thought-provoking exercises in Boys Will Be Human. My favorite is French fries and consent!
6. What do you hope readers take away from the book? When a boy reads this, I want him to realize he is enough as he is. And that above all, he is human and it’s okay to make mistakes.
7. If you could give your younger self one piece of advice from the book, what would it be? Don’t worry about what others think. And don’t take yourself or life too seriously– have a little fun!

The seventh season of Outlander is winding down, but that doesn’t mean the time travel drama is running out of steam with Claire and Jamie facing the American Revolution with higher stakes than ever. The upcoming penultimate installment, which will be the show’s first in the 2025 TV schedule, has a big nod to Diana Gabaldon’s source material that’s clear even without seeing the episode yet. Interestingly, the nod also comes one week after an episode penned by Gabaldon debuted on Starz to end the 2024 TV schedule, and she had some interesting comments about the experience.
First things first! The penultimate episode of Season 7 is called “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood,” which fans of the books will recognize as the title of the eighth of Diana Gabaldon’s nine main Outlander novels so far. This isn’t an unprecedented move; the Starz series’ second season finale is called “Dragonfly in Amber” in a nod to Gabaldon’s second book, and the Season 5 premiere was called “The Fiery Cross” as a nod to Gabaldon’s fifth book.
So, the title of the next episode being taken from the eighth book doesn’t mean that readers should expect a story lifted straight from page to screen, but it does suggest that perhaps some of the biggest events of the novel could happen before the end of the season. Personally, I’m also interested to see if the last two episodes before the next Droughtlander begins will incorporate certain aspects of Book 9, Go Tell the Bees that I Am Gone. With Outlander ending after Season 8, the show had limited time to finish telling Gabaldon’s story.
And speaking of Gabaldon’s story, the author herself wrote the most recent episode of Season 7, called “Ye Dinna Get Used To It.” I was certainly interested in seeing what she brought to the show after her comments about the Season 7 midseason finale, and this was only the third episode that she wrote for the series based on her novels. (EP Ronald D. Moore did tell CinemaBlend that the Outlander team keeps Gabaldon “in the loop,” though.)
Speaking with Parade about writing the episode that aired on December 17, the author explained that even her script went through changes for the TV show. According to Gabaldon, “They did change quite a bit from the first draft” of her episode to cut some time from William and Jane, devote more time to Hal and Lord John, and cut down the story between Brianna and Rob Cameron. She went on to name another example of a change from book to screen in Season 7:
Some lines were changed—when Claire (book) sees Jamie in his new uniform and he asks whether he looks decent to inspect troops, she replies, ‘You look like bloody Mars, god of war. You’re likely to frighten your men.’ To which he replies, ‘I want them frightened of me. It’s my best chance of getting them out of this alive.’ That was (I believe) changed to JAMIE: ‘Do ye like it? CLAIRE: ‘I’d be lying if I said I didn’t.’ OK, there’s nothing wrong with either version, but it does alter the focus.
The author clarified that she sees “nothing wrong with either version,” but the change “does alter the focus” from Jamie’s worries about leading hundreds of troops he doesn’t know personal to putting the “emphasis is on the relationship between Jamie and Claire.” Gabaldon elaborated on why what works for her on the page simply can’t always work on screen:
There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with either one; it’s just where you want to place the focus of a scene or story, and in some contexts, one version might be better for the other medium. (i.e., I have all the room I need to do just about anything I want; I can take the time to show Jamie’s uncertainty about leading a much bigger group of men than he ever has, under urgent conditions. The show can’t, because they don’t have room. If they have to pick and choose between the elements of a book-scene (and they do), they’ll usually go for the briefest/most condensed version.
Gabaldon certainly does have more room to flesh out characters and stories in her books than Outlander does with one hour-long episode per week during a season. In total, Season 7 will amount to about 16 hours of television; the hardcover copy of Written in My Own Hearts Blood has 825 pages, and the audiobook is listed on Audible as running for 45 hours. Is it any wonder that the TV show has to pick, choose, and condense to adapt the saga to the small screen?
Of course, not all fans of the show have read the books, so the differences between the two mediums aren’t going to be apparent to everybody. Still, whether you are or aren’t a reader of Diana Gabaldon’s source material, you can look forward to the remaining episodes of Outlander Season 7, airing on Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
