Footage Shows Authorities Pulling Live Wild Animal from Supermarket Fridge Shelf
A coyote was found and removed from an unexpected hiding place.
On Monday, Jan. 13, at an Aldi supermarket in Chicago, a coyote was discovered in the refrigerator section hiding behind the shelf of prepared meals, according to a video Barstool Sports personality Eddie Farrer published on X.
In the video, two Chicago Animal Care and Control officials are by the refrigerator shelf when one uses a tool to retrieve an unknown animal. As he finds the animal, he pulls it by its tail with his own hands. Quickly, the coyote is revealed and jumps out.
The wild animal gets its footing and promptly jumps back into the refrigerator shelving. The video does not document the authorities removing the animal from the refrigerator again or its removal from the supermarket.
The video was seemingly from outside the store and through the window. “I was prepared to see him pull out an opossum or a raccoon. Did NOT expect that,” Farrer captioned the clip.
The Chicago Police Department confirmed to NBC 5 that the incident occurred around 9:45 a.m., and the coyote was “safely” taken into custody.
“The animal is currently at our facility awaiting transfer to our wildlife rehabilitation partner, Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation,” CACC said in a statement to NBC 5. “The coyote appears uninjured, but Flint Creek will conduct an assessment to confirm its health before releasing it back into the wild if deemed appropriate.”
The Chicago PD confirmed there were no reported injuries.
A Chicago Animal Care and Control representative confirmed to PEOPLE that the coyote was taken to Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation. “While the coyote appeared uninjured, Flint Creek will conduct an assessment to confirm its health before releasing it back into the wild if deemed appropriate,” per Chicago Animal Care and Control.
After the incident, Chicago Animal Care and Control posted information regarding coyotes on Facebook. The species has increased activity in urban areas from January through March.
“During this time, coyotes are more active and may be seen more frequently, even during daylight hours. Coyotes are typically shy and avoid humans, but it’s important to take precautions to keep your pets and community safe,” read the post.
The department also provided tips, including keeping pets on leashes, securing food sources, monitoring yards, not feeding coyotes and remaining alert. “If you see a coyote, make yourself big, loud, and back away slowly—never run,” the department added.
The Chicago Animal Care and Control also provided a coyote tip sheet for Chicago residents to reference.

Recently, shocking footage has emerged showing authorities pulling a live wild animal from a supermarket fridge shelf. The video, which has since gone viral, captures the moment when officials discovered a wild raccoon hiding among the food items in a supermarket in a busy city.Shoppers and employees were left stunned as the animal was carefully removed from the fridge shelf and safely released back into the wild. It is still unclear how the raccoon managed to get into the supermarket and find its way into the refrigerated section.
Authorities have reminded the public to be cautious and report any sightings of wild animals in urban areas to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The video serves as a stark reminder of the importance of coexisting peacefully with wildlife and ensuring their safety and well-being.

Australia antisemitic attack: Authorities vow action after cars torched, home vandalized in Sydney
Brisbane, Australia
CNN
—
Four vehicles and the former home of a Jewish community leader were defaced in Sydney early Friday, with two cars set alight, in the latest antisemitic attack condemned by Australian authorities, who vowed to “hunt down” the perpetrators.
The attack in Dover Heights, one of the Australian city’s exclusive eastern suburbs, is among more than 100 being investigated by Operation Avalite, a special taskforce created in early December to counter rising antisemitism.
It targeted the former residence of Alex Ryvchin, the co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), who has repeatedly urged the government to do more to address attacks on members of the Jewish community, which have flared up since the start of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.
Images showed red paint splashed on the home’s exterior, and the words “F*** Jews” were written on the side of a car partially destroyed by fire.
Ryvchin told reporters it wasn’t clear if his family was the target of the attack, but if not, the choice to spray paint that particular home was “one hell of a coincidence.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told CNN affiliate ABC Radio Friday the attack is “against everything that we stand for.”
“What we need to do is to lower the temperature in the community,” Albanese said.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke joined the chorus of condemnation from government ministers, calling the attack a “hate crime” that comes with “serious criminal penalties.”
“We have our best agencies working to make sure that these people are hunted down … Nobody should think that anything that is happening anywhere around the world gives them the right to conduct a hate crime in Australia,” Burke said.
Friday’s attack comes just days after red swastikas were daubed on two synagogues in the Sydney suburbs of Allawah and Newtown.
Two suspects dressed in black were caught on closed-circuit video cameras outside Newtown Synagogue, according to police in the state of New South Wales (NSW), of which Sydney is the capital.
Images released by police show two figures apparently leaving the scene on a pushbike and electric scooter. Police allege they also tried to light a fire.
A spate of antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne prompted the government to assign a special taskforce to address the problem.
Operation Avalite filed its first charges Thursday, against a 44-year-old man who allegedly made death threats via social media directed at the Australian Jewish Association.
The Avalite team of 20 officers and analysts, including counter-terrorism investigators, are investigating dozens of antisemitic attacks dating back to October 2023.
They include an arson attack on Melbourne’s Adass Israel synagogue, which was gutted by fire in early December – and led to a security upgrade outside Jewish schools, community centers and places of worship.
“No Australian should have to go to bed filled with apprehension about hate crimes being perpetrated overnight, said David Ossip, president of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies Friday.
Standing alongside Ossip, NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley directly addressed the perpetrators of Friday’s attack: “We will hunt you down, we will find you and we will lock you up.”
Chris Minns, the state premier, said laws would be strengthened next month to protect places of worship, including the Great Synagogue in Sydney’s central business district.
He said hate laws would also be tightened, to stamp out antisemitism before it progresses to the firebombing of synagogues and other religious sites.
“The truth of the matter is that incidents of antisemitism, violent behavior are increasing in our community, and collectively, as a community, as a society, we have to stand together to condemn it unambiguously and send a clear message to these animals that these actions will not be tolerated,” he said.
Israel’s onslaught on Gaza after the Hamas-led cross-border attack on October 7, 2023 has deepened divisions within Australian society.
Almost every weekend since the start of the conflict, thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters have marched through Sydney to call for a ceasefire.
The Australian government has welcomed an agreement that mediators say would see a pause in fighting in Gaza and lead to the phased release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
“Australians want to see the conflict end,” Albanese said Friday. “They want to see hostages released. They want to see people being able to live in peace and security – whether that be Israelis or Palestinians. And they don’t want to see conflict brought here to Australia.”
In a recent disturbing incident of antisemitism in Sydney, Australia, multiple cars were torched and a home was vandalized in what authorities are calling a hate-motivated attack. The Jewish community in Sydney is reeling from this targeted act of violence, which has sparked outrage and concern among residents. The New South Wales Police Force has vowed to take swift and decisive action to apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime. In a statement, they condemned the attack as “completely unacceptable” and assured the community that they are working diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Premier of New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian, also expressed her shock and dismay at the incident, stating that there is no place for hate or intolerance in Australian society. She pledged to work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of all residents, regardless of their background or beliefs.
As the investigation into this antisemitic attack continues, it is crucial for the community to stand together in solidarity against such acts of hatred and bigotry. We must send a clear message that antisemitism will not be tolerated in Australia, and that those who perpetrate such crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
Let us all join hands in condemning this despicable act and reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and tolerant society, where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. Together, we can combat antisemitism and ensure that all Australians can live free from fear and discrimination. #NoToAntisemitism #UnityAgainstHate

Judge delays removal of Eritreans that deceived Canadian authorities
The family came to court without ‘clean hands’ because the adult applicants deceived immigration authorities about their Swedish citizenship for many years

An Eritrean family granted refugee status in Canada without telling immigration authorities they already had Swedish citizenship has convinced a Federal Court judge in Ottawa to delay their removal from Canada so the children can continue their schooling here, even though their parents came to court “without ‘clean hands’” due to their deception.
Solomon Yohannes Goitom, Eden Rezene and their two children were scheduled to be sent back to Sweden on Dec. 28 because although they had been granted refugee status in Canada, it later came to light that they actually had obtained Swedish citizenship.

However, the family had applied to the court to defer their removal so their kids can continue studying in Canada.
“I am satisfied based on the particular circumstances of this case, taking into account the evidence provided by the eldest child, who will be graduating from middle school this year, and the evidence about the school year calendar in Sweden, that irreparable harm has been established because of the short-term best interests of the children,” Justice Lobat Sadrehashemi said in a Dec. 23 decision allowing the family to stay in Canada, at least temporarily.
Lawyers for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada argued that the family came to court “without ‘clean hands’ because the adult applicants deceived immigration authorities about their Swedish citizenship for many years.”
The family had asked that the Canada Border Services Agency “defer their removal until the children finish the school year,” but that was denied by the agency on Dec. 18.
They came to Canada in 2016 “and made refugee claims alleging persecution in Eritrea,” said the decision granting them a reprieve.

They didn’t disclose the fact that they had Swedish citizenship and were granted refugee status.
“Later, (the immigration minister) learned that the applicants had Swedish citizenship and brought an application to vacate their refugee status before the Refugee Protection Division,” said the decision, which notes the family lost both their refugee and permanent resident status in Canada in 2022.

The couple had a third child here, “who is impacted by my decision because this child will leave Canada with his parents and siblings if the stay is denied,” Sadrehashemi said. The judge did not make any note of the third child’s citizenship, though babies born in Canada are almost always automatically Canadian citizens at birth.
Sometime after they lost their refugee status in Canada, the family applied for permanent residence “based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds” as well as a pre-removal risk assessment — a last-ditch bid to stay in Canada. “Both these applications were refused,” Sadrehashemi said.

The family got their travel documents on Nov. 8, and 12 days later the CBSA told them to report for removal on Dec. 28.
The family had been working with CBSA to arrange travel documents for Sweden, but “there is a dispute between the parties about the applicants’ level of cooperation with their removal,” said the judge.
She exercised her discretion and provided the relief the family was seeking.
“There is no evidence that there has been misconduct related to CBSA’s efforts at removal (of the family) that are the subject of this stay motion. Further, the serious issue and irreparable harm being raised in this motion relate to the short-term best interests of the children, who had no part in the misconduct raised by the Minister. In these circumstances, I find the balance of convenience favours granting the motion and staying the applicants’ removal from Canada.”
The family’s reprieve could be short-lived.
Sadrehashemi’s stay will last until the family gets a final decision on their separate application for a judicial review of the “decision to refuse the deferral of their removal.”

In a recent court ruling, a judge has decided to delay the removal of a group of Eritreans who deceived Canadian authorities about their identities. The individuals in question had falsely claimed to be from a different country in order to gain entry into Canada. The judge’s decision to delay their removal comes after their lawyers argued that they would face persecution if returned to Eritrea, their country of origin. The lawyers also raised concerns about the lack of due process in the removal proceedings.
This case highlights the complexities and challenges of immigration and refugee law, particularly when individuals provide false information to authorities. It raises important questions about how to balance the need for security and integrity in immigration processes with the duty to protect those who genuinely fear persecution.
The judge’s decision to delay the removal of these individuals underscores the importance of a fair and thorough assessment of each case before making such significant decisions. It also serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and accountability in immigration procedures to ensure that justice is served for all involved parties.

British teenager hands himself into UAE authorities for having sex with 17-year-old girl
An 18-year-old British man sentenced to one year of imprisonment in a Dubai jail for having sex with a 17-year-old girl has handed himself into UAE authorities to begin his jail term, a campaign group has said.
Marcus Fakana, of Tottenham, North London, “now hopes for a pardon” from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the emirate’s ruler, Detained in Dubai said.
In Dubai, if an adult has a sexual relationship with a person under 18, they can be prosecuted for having a sexual relationship with a minor.
In a message from Fakana shared by the group, he thanked those who have supported him “throughout my fight”.
“I’m grateful for all the people who helped by donating to me and my family,” he said, signing off with “goodbye Marcus.F”.
Radha Stirling, the group’s chief executive, said she was worried about the “impact of Dubai prison on an 18-year-old’s life”.
“It wasn’t easy to find the words to say to him as he surrendered his freedom,” she said.

Fakana was with his parents in the UAE from the end of August when a “holiday romance blossomed” with another Londoner, who has since turned 18, the campaign group previously said.
After returning to the UK and seeing pictures and chats, the girl’s mother reported the relationship to Dubai police, who then arrested Fakana at his hotel, it is alleged.
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesman said: “We are supporting a British man in the UAE and are in contact with his family.”
Consular officials are said to be in regular contact with Fakana, his family and his legal team, but the Government is not able to interfere in the country’s judicial system.
Fakana has received backing from members of the public, and a Change.org petition calling on the Government to offer him stronger support received more than 40,000 signatures.
A fundraiser set up by Fakana’s family entitled “Help bring Marcus home” has raised more than £35,000, to which Game Of Thrones actor Kit Harington gave £500, according to GoFundMe.
In a recent news development, a British teenager voluntarily handed himself into UAE authorities for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old girl. The teenager, whose identity has not been disclosed, took responsibility for his actions and cooperated with the authorities in Dubai. This case highlights the serious consequences of engaging in sexual activities with minors in countries with strict laws and regulations. It serves as a reminder for individuals, especially teenagers, to be aware of the legal age of consent in different countries and to always act responsibly.
The British teenager’s decision to turn himself in demonstrates a sense of accountability and respect for the laws of the country he was in. It is commendable that he chose to face the consequences of his actions rather than attempting to evade them.
As the legal process unfolds, it is important for all parties involved to respect the privacy and rights of the individuals affected. This case serves as a cautionary tale for young people to be mindful of their actions and the potential legal implications, especially when in foreign countries.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A pizza deliverer in central Florida has been charged with pushing her way into a motel room with an accomplice and stabbing a pregnant woman after a dispute over a tip, authorities said.
Brianna Alvelo was charged with stabbing a woman in her motel room in Kissimmee, Florida, a short time after delivering a pizza to her on Sunday, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman gave Alvelo $50 on a $33.10 bill, expecting change back. When Alvelo started walking away, the woman asked for money back, and the pizza deliverer told her they didn’t make change as a policy, according to an arrest report.
The woman began searching for smaller denominations in two purses in her motel room and in her car, with Alvelo watching. She got a smaller dollar bill from her boyfriend, with whom she was staying at the hotel along with her 5-year-old daughter, and Alvelo’s tip ended up being $2, the report said.
Alvelo “rolled her eyes and walked away without saying anything,” the report said.
A short time later, the woman, her boyfriend and daughter were asleep when they heard a knock on the motel room door. The women opened the door and was confronted by a woman, who authorities said was Alvelo, and an armed man, both wearing face masks, who pushed their way into the room. The armed man ordered the boyfriend into the bathroom. Alvelo rummaged through their belongings in the motel room and then stabbed the women 14 times with a pocket knife as she shielded her daughter, the arrest report said.
The arrest report said that the woman had just found out she was a few weeks pregnant. She was taken to a hospital where she underwent surgery for a ruptured lung.
Alvelo is facing charges of attempted murder, home invasion with a firearm, kidnapping and aggravated assault with a weapon. An online court docket showed no attorney for her. Ahead of a first appearance hearing on Thursday, she said in court papers that she couldn’t afford an attorney and asked one to be appointed for her.
Authorities hadn’t publicly identified the male suspect as of Thursday.
