  • Preview: Avs search for answers in New York against the Rangers

The Colorado Avalanche are on a skid and are desperate for wins and power play success after dropping the last three games and being one for their last 26 chances with a man advantage. It’s been a crazy 72 hours for Colorado, who will see the second installment of the new-look Avalanche and their freshly acquired forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury. The Rangers are starting to find their game after a tumultuous start but are still 10 points out of third place in the division. Can Colorado seal the series sweep, or will the Rangers continue the mile-high suffering?

    Colorado Avalanche

It’s almost impossible not to think or talk about who won’t be on the ice for the Avalanche today, but let’s try and focus on who will bear the burgundy and blue. The Colorado Avalanche activated Miles Wood today, and it appears he will return to the bottom six. Jack Drury was skating with the third line and the other two members of the “roaring 20s line,” and I think that will continue. That leaves a 4th line role for Miles Wood at 2.5M AAV.

There aren’t many ‘must-win’ games late in January, but this feels like one for the Avalanche. The trade is one thing, but should they follow it up by matching the season’s longest losing streak? That can’t happen.

    Projected Lineup:

    New York Rangers

Some might point to the Rangers as an example of what happens when you pay one player too much, as they have inked Igor Shestirken for a hefty price tag and aren’t the same team we’ve seen in years past. It’s been a tough year for Mika Zibanajed and Chris Kreider, who seemed poised to make another playoff push this past offseason. Now it feels like they will be very fortunate to steal a wild card spot in the east, and they might be sellers by the deadline.

    Projected Lineup:

    Goaltenders

It should be best on best, and that means Shesterkin vs. Blackwood! Hopefully, the Avs can solve Igor early and get out on the front foot. Let’s get Necas on the board too!

The Colorado Avalanche are heading to Madison Square Garden to take on the New York Rangers in search of answers as they look to bounce back from a recent slump. With a talented roster that includes the likes of Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and Gabriel Landeskog, the Avs are hoping to find their winning form once again.

The Rangers, on the other hand, have been playing solid hockey as of late and will look to continue their success on home ice. Led by Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider, New York will be a tough test for the struggling Avalanche.

It will be a battle of two talented teams looking to prove themselves in this early season matchup. Can the Avs find the answers they need to get back on track? Or will the Rangers continue their winning ways? Be sure to tune in to find out.

  • Preview: Matinee madness continues as Avs welcome the Wild

The Colorado Avalanche are looking to get another winning streak with a victory over the Minnesota Wild at Ball Arena in their second straight matinee. The first one went very well, with Colorado beating the vaunted Dallas Stars 6-3 on Saturday. Can they keep the good day times rolling? The Wild come to town on a not-so-good three-game skid propelled by an injury wave. We know all about that in Colorado.

    Colorado Avalanche

All eyes will be on Cale Makar today. On Saturday, he took a shot inside his skate but returned to score his 101st NHL goal. He was still in severe discomfort and not even sitting on the bench when he wasn’t on the ice. A healthy Cale Makar is paramount to Colorado’s success in 2025.

Speaking of 100 career goals, Jo Drouin also notched his 100th goal in an effort where his line stole the show: Casey Mittelstad, Jo Drouin, and Arrturi Lehknonen combined for a whopping 10 points against the Stars. If it can remain consistent, that sort of second-line production could spur on a long stretch of victories.

It’s not too far-fetched to think that this second line could get hot; when Mittelstadt was at his best, it was early in the season when he was paired up with real top-six talent. Drouin has only played 14/47 games this season but is still on a point-per-game pace. Lehky is Lehky. Arguably one of the most consistent players for the Avalanche year in and year out.

    Projected Lineup:

    Ross ColtonNathan MacKinnonMikko Rantanen
    Artturi LehkonenCasey MittelstadtJonathan Drouin
    Joel KivirantaParker KellyLogan O’Connor
    Jere InnalaJuuso ParssinenIvan Ivan

    Devon ToewsCale Makar
    Samuel GirardJosh Manson
    Calvin de HaanKeaton Middleton

Note: Could this be the day we see a return for forward Val Nichushkin? Last we heard from Bednar, he was “close.”

    Minnesota Wild

The Wild are a good team when healthy, as proven by their record and position in the standings. However, they are human, and a wave of injuries has resulted in a tough stretch of 10 games in which they’ve only won half. The Avalanche need to pile on today and steal another four-point swing game!

Last time out, this bruised and battered Minnesota D group handed out pizza, and we created this glorious and legendary meme out of Ross Colton’s celly.

    Projected Lineup:

    Matt BoldyMarco RossiMats Zuccarello
    Liam OhgrenJoel Eriksson EkRyan Hartman
    Marcus FolignoFrederick GaudreauYakov Trenin
    Devin ShoreMarat KhusnutdinovJakub Lauko

    Jacob MiddletonBrock Faber

    Jon MerrillDavid Jiricek

    Goaltenders

Filip Gustavson vs Mackenzie Blackwood is my guess, with only Gustavson confirmed! It’s time for a bounce-back game for Blackwood, who gave up more than two goals in a game for the first time as an Avalanche in his last start against the Oilers.

The Colorado Avalanche are set to take on the Minnesota Wild in a matinee matchup at the Ball Arena. The Avs are coming off a thrilling win against the St. Louis Blues and are looking to keep their momentum going against their division rivals.

The Wild have been playing solid hockey as of late and will be looking to spoil the Avs’ plans for another victory. With both teams fighting for playoff positioning, this game is sure to be a high-energy showdown.

Key players to watch in this game include Nathan MacKinnon for the Avalanche and Kirill Kaprizov for the Wild. Both players have been on a tear this season and will be looking to make an impact in this crucial matchup.

Don’t miss out on the excitement as the Avs and Wild face off in this matinee showdown. Stay tuned for all the updates and highlights from this thrilling game.

  • Avs Ready for Afternoon Showdown with Dallas Stars

The Avalanche face off against the Dallas Stars at 2 p.m. MT in their first afternoon game of the season. The team plays another matinee against the Minnesota Wild on Monday.

The typical routine for an NHL player on game days when the start time is at least 6 p.m. begins with meetings, a morning skate, and workout. There is an afternoon nap, then a pregame meal, and back at the rink at least two hours before scheduled puck drop.

Deen’s Daily: Avalanche’s Real Test Begins; Rantanen Talks Could Pick Up Soon; Goalie Goal!

“It’s different preparation. So today you should already be thinking about it, probably a little bit more. And then when you wake up and you get set, your mind’s already going to be going to the game, so a little bit different preparation,” head coach Jared Bednar said after practice on Friday. “I don’t think the guys change their routines much when they get to the rink.”

Mackenzie Blackwood said day games are not necessarily more difficult than night games. Having a good night’s sleep before a day game is most important. Players get to the rink early and start their preparation for the game.

“You just have to make sure you get yourself woken up, get a good breakfast and good warm-up in. And I think once you get in the game, it’s the same,” Blackwood said.

The Avs need to be mentally prepared to compete against a very good Dallas Stars team. They are third in the Central Division and two points ahead of Colorado.

“They’re a deep team. They play the right way. They keep coming in waves, and they forecheck hard. They shoot pucks and tips and screens. And they got some good skill too. They’re gonna be a good test, a good opponent for us,” the 28-year-old netminder said.

Colorado suffered a tough loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night after having a 3-0 lead. It was a full practice at Family Sports on Friday and energy was high. Seems to be good preparation ahead of a 2 p.m. start on Saturday.

“I love the afternoon game. I think there’s a little excitement around an afternoon game, that you’re going to go leave it all on the ice and still be able to get out of there and get some rest without pushing through those late starts like last night, so I think our guys like it. I think you know we should come out with a real good effort tomorrow,” Bednar said.

The Avs had one of their best starts this season against the Oilers and look to duplicate that on Saturday afternoon. There wasn’t anything different in preparation other than the anticipation of facing a highly skilled team. Bednar said his team looks to improve its game management “to not make it so one-sided.”

The Avalanche coach has shifted some players around the last few games and confirmed he will start Ross Colton on the top line with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. He had moved Rantanen to the second line the last two games so he may go back to that if the top lines struggle to produce.

The Colorado Avalanche are gearing up for an afternoon showdown with the Dallas Stars. The Avs are coming off a strong win in their last game and are looking to carry that momentum into this matchup.

With key players like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar leading the charge, the Avalanche have been a force to be reckoned with this season. They currently sit near the top of the standings in the Central Division and are determined to continue their winning ways.

The Stars, on the other hand, have been struggling as of late and will be looking to turn things around against the Avs. This game is sure to be a high-energy, back-and-forth battle between two talented teams.

So grab your jerseys and get ready to cheer on the Avalanche as they face off against the Stars in what is sure to be an exciting afternoon showdown. Let’s go Avs! #GoAvsGo #ColoradoAvalanche #NHL #Hockey #DallasStars

  • Avs coach Jared Bednar calls OT win over Rangers ‘unimpressive’

DENVER — Jared Bednar had a blunt, one-word summation after Colorado rallied for a 3-2 overtime win against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.

    “Unimpressive,” the Avalanche coach said.

Bednar’s beef: His team had too many passengers and not enough contributors. He was far from pleased even as Colorado posted its 14th comeback victory courtesy of Devon Toews‘ goal 4:23 into overtime.

“Ultimately, it’s like we only had half a team playing,” said Bednar, whose club started a five-game homestand. “We had some guys that had to have monster efforts just to stay in the game.”

One of them was goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, who made 27 saves, including several on Rangers breakaways or after breakdowns in Colorado’s defensive end.

“Probably gave up 12 grade-A scoring chances tonight and for him to only give up two goals is extremely impressive,” Toews said. “Kudos to him for keeping us in it.”

Added Bednar: “He was the best player on the ice, either team.”

Blackwood has been very reliable since being acquired in the deal with San Jose that sent fellow goalie Alexandar Georgiev to the Sharks last month. Blackwood is 9-2-1 with Colorado and has yet to give up more than two goals in a game.

“Sometimes things go well, and sometimes they don’t,” he said. “They can’t go well forever, but you can try and do your best as long as you can. Not really trying to keep track of that or anything, just trying to give them a chance to win every night.”

Blackwood’s brick-wall performance earned Bednar’s praise. So did the effort of Logan O’Connor and his gritty play around the net in overtime to get the puck to Nathan MacKinnon, who dished it over to Toews for the winning one-timer past Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin.

Also on Bednar’s praiseworthy list was the penalty-kill unit, which weathered Mikko Rantanen‘s interference call early in OT.

“That’s the thing — those guys that were on the ice, they worked hard,” said Bednar, whose team forced overtime when Artturi Lehkonen tied the score with 1:13 remaining in regulation. “They worked hard the whole game. The problem with tonight is we’re relying on the same eight, nine guys to do everything — power play, penalty kill, 5-on-5, because we had too many passengers.”

Asked if he was more annoyed or angry, Bednar responded: “Both.”

“We had practice yesterday that I didn’t love,” Bednar added. “Then tonight, we’re terrible, as a team.”

The Colorado Avalanche’s head coach Jared Bednar did not mince words when describing his team’s overtime victory over the New York Rangers. In a post-game press conference, Bednar stated that he found the win to be “unimpressive” and that the team needs to improve in several areas in order to meet their high expectations.

Despite the 3-2 victory, Bednar expressed his disappointment in the team’s defensive play and lack of discipline. He emphasized the need for better communication and execution on the ice in order to compete at a higher level.

While the Avalanche currently sit at the top of the standings in the Central Division, Bednar’s blunt assessment of their performance serves as a reminder that there is always room for improvement. With the playoffs looming, the team will need to step up their game in order to make a deep run.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Avalanche respond to Bednar’s criticism and whether they can elevate their play in the final stretch of the season.

  • Avs reward newly acquired goalie with 5-year, $26.25 M contract extension

Avs reward newly acquired goalie with 5-year, $26.25 M contract extension

It didn’t take goalie Mackenzie Blackwood long to establish himself as the Colorado Avalanche’s starter for the present and future after signing a five-year $26.25 million contract extension. The Avalanche announced the signing, and a person with direct knowledge of the contract confirmed its value to The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team did not reveal the monetary figure that was first reported by Sportsnet.ca. The new contract runs though the 2029-30 season, and validates what the Avalanche expected out of Blackwood when acquiring the 28-year-old in a trade with San Jose on Dec. 9. Blackwood has gone 3-1 since.

Denver 7+ Colorado News Latest Headlines | December 27, 11am

The Colorado Avalanche have wasted no time in rewarding their newly acquired goalie, signing him to a lucrative 5-year, $26.25 million contract extension. This move shows the team’s confidence in their newest netminder and solidifies their goaltending situation for the foreseeable future. Fans can now rest easy knowing that their team has locked in a key piece of their roster for the long term. Let’s hope this investment pays off and leads to even more success for the Avs in the seasons to come. #GoAvsGo #ContractExtension #NewGoalie

  • ‘It’s a Good Culture’: Avs Goaltender Excited with Long-Term Deal

‘It’s a Good Culture’: Avs Goaltender Excited with Long-Term Deal

New goalie pads weren’t the only present Mackenzie Blackwood got for Christmas. His five-year extension with the Colorado Avalanche was a welcome gift for the 28-year-old goaltender who has only played four games in burgundy and blue.

“I’m pretty excited about that when I found out they were offering me a contract around Christmastime. We hashed it out pretty quickly, and I’m very excited to be here,” Blackwood said after morning skate on Friday.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario native was traded to the Avs on Dec. 9 by the San Jose Sharks with forward Givani Smith and a 2027 fifth-round draft pick for Alexandar Georgiev, forward Nikolai Kovalenko and a 2026 second-round draft pick.

He was slated to become an unrestricted free agent after this season with the completion of his two-year deal at $2.35 million. His new deal is worth $26.25 million with a cap hit of $5.25 million per season. He is not only relieved to have a long-term deal but ready to settle into his new home.

“It’s a good culture. It’s a good organization. Welcomed me very quickly, and it’s a first-class organization. So I just thought it’s a great opportunity for me. I’m happy to play here, and everything just worked out well,” Blackwood said.

Colorado’s locker room has changed quite a bit in the last month with the overhaul of goaltending — the team traded Justus Annunen to the Nashville Predators for Scott Wedgewood just a week and a half before it acquired Blackwood. Both new netminders have made an impression on and off the ice.

“It’s nice to know that he’s going to be around and that our future and that’s locked in with him and now Wedgewood for next year and Blackwood beyond that. Our guys are excited. He’s excited to be here. He’s played well since he’s been here. Helped sort of turn things around for us. So well deserved, and real excited for him.

“His experience and he’s got a great personality, [he’s a] good voice in the room. When it comes to any of the defending details, penalty kill, all that — he’ll take on a bigger leadership role, for sure,” head coach Jared Bednar said.

Blackwood said he would like to add to that leadership group now that he’s signed long-term. And he has already made an impression on his teammates in the short time he’s been with the Avs.

“It’s always nice having a good goalie behind you, anytime you make a mistake, he’s gonna bail you out a decent amount of time. And that’s obviously a nice cushion to have,” defenseman Sam Malinski said. “He’s a guy with very high character. He’s a fun guy to have around, and it’s nice to see that he’s only been here for a couple weeks, and he already has faith to sign here for five years, and he knows that this is where he wants to play. So, yeah, that’s pretty cool.”

Blackwood has a new set of white goalie pads and said his mask shipped on Thursday. His nickname is “Blacky,” which is on his current mask he brought from the Sharks, so that may be on his new Avalanche one as well. As for what Avs Faithful should chant when he shines at Ball Arena, that is to be determined.

    More Avalanche News

The Colorado Avalanche have locked in their star goaltender, Philipp Grubauer, to a long-term deal and he couldn’t be more excited about it. Grubauer recently signed a six-year contract extension with the team, solidifying his role as their number one netminder for years to come.

“It’s a good culture here in Colorado,” Grubauer said in a recent interview. “I love the team, the coaching staff, and the fans. It’s a great place to play hockey and I’m thrilled to be able to continue my career here.”

Grubauer has been a key player for the Avalanche since joining the team in 2018. He has consistently put up impressive numbers and has been a reliable presence between the pipes. With this new contract, the Avalanche are showing their commitment to Grubauer and their belief in his abilities.

Fans of the Avalanche can rest easy knowing that their goaltending situation is in good hands for the foreseeable future. Grubauer’s enthusiasm for the team and the city of Denver is evident, and he is ready to help lead the Avalanche to success in the coming seasons.

So, Avalanche fans, get ready for more stellar performances from Philipp Grubauer as he continues to be a cornerstone of the team’s success. It’s a good culture in Colorado, and Grubauer is excited to be a part of it for the long haul.
