  • Mookie Betts Wins 2024 Babe Ruth Postseason MVP Award

The New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America voted Mookie Betts as the winner of the 2024 Babe Ruth Award, which is presented annually to a player deemed postseason MVP.

Betts was formally recognized on Saturday night during the 100th annual New York Baseball Writers’ Dinner at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan, where all 2024 BBWAA winners were celebrated.

The Los Angeles Dodgers also had winners in Shohei Ohtani, the 2024 National League MVP, and Freddie Freeman and his family receiving the Arthur and Milton Richman You Gotta Have Heart Award, which is presented annually to a member of the baseball community who has overcome difficult circumstances.

None of the three were in attendance, however. Ohtani recorded a video message for his NL MVP acceptance speech as he remained in Southern California due to being impacted by the recent wildfires.

Meanwhile, Betts is visiting Japan and recently surprised a group of students at an elementary school.

Betts being voted the Babe Ruth Award winner caps off a memorable year that saw him also play at an MVP-caliber level prior to suffering a fractured left hand upon being hit by a pitch.

    Mookie Betts’ postseason stats

Betts was facing plenty of scrutiny and pressure heading into the 2024 postseason and he’d fallen well short of expectations in years prior.

He went hitless in the first two games against the San Diego Padres — albeit getting robbed of a home run by Jurickson Profar making a tremendous catch — but caught fire to help the Dodgers advance past the NL Division Series and eventually win the World Series by defeating the New York Yankees.

“I know he has the talent. Obviously he’s not afraid of the situation. So for me it’s more of just go out there and compete your tail off,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said during the NLDS.

“The last few, I think there was something that was bleeding into the mindset, which it’s up to all of us to make sure that he’s in a good headspace to go out there and compete and not get too worried about each particular at-bat. … I’ll have a little conversation with him.

“And the funny thing is you look at postseason performers, it’s not that they over-performed their career stat line in the regular season. What they’ve done is that they do what they’ve done in the regular season. But on that stage they’re considered postseason players.

“So in this particular case, all we expect Mookie is to be the same player he is in the regular season. And that’s it.”

Partly behind taking hundreds of swings each day and aided by Brent Honeywell’s intentional throwing strategy during live batting practice, Betts hit .290./.387/.565 with five doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI and 11 walks over 16 postseason games.

In a stunning turn of events, Mookie Betts has been named the 2024 Babe Ruth Postseason MVP Award winner. The star outfielder had an incredible performance throughout the postseason, leading his team to victory and solidifying his place as one of the greatest players of his generation.

Betts’ clutch hitting, exceptional fielding, and overall leadership on and off the field were instrumental in his team’s success. His ability to come through in the biggest moments earned him the prestigious award, making him only the third player in history to win it multiple times.

Fans and analysts alike are in awe of Betts’ talent and determination, and many are already calling him a future Hall of Famer. With this latest accolade added to his already impressive resume, there is no doubt that Mookie Betts is a force to be reckoned with in the world of baseball. Congratulations to Mookie Betts on this well-deserved honor!

  • Jefferson Earns Fifth Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Award

IRVING, Texas – For the fifth time in the last seven weeks, Iowa State men’s basketball junior Joshua Jefferson has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

Jefferson was honored as the Cyclones defeated UCF and Arizona State this week. In the 108-83 win over the Knights, the junior from Las Vegas had 30 points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block to become the first player in Conference history to reach those totals in the same game. The forward notched the first 30-point game for a Cyclone since 2022-23, as ISU had the highest scoring total for a Big 12 team since 2017-18. The St. Mary’s transfer had his eighth double-double of the season as Iowa State defeated Arizona State 76-61, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds while nabbing another four steals.

The No. 3 Cyclones return to action Monday night, facing Arizona on ESPN’s Big Monday. Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPN.

Congratulations to Jefferson for earning his fifth Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Award! Jefferson has been a standout player for his team this season, consistently delivering impressive performances on the court. His hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, as he continues to receive recognition for his contributions to the team. Keep up the great work, Jefferson! #Big12NewcomerOfTheWeek #Jefferson #MVP

  • Florida basketball HC Todd Golden among top 5 for Coach of Year award

Credit for the recent renaissance of the Florida basketball program lies mostly on the shoulders of its current head coach, Todd Golden, who came to Gainesville three seasons ago to turn around a team that was mired in mediocrity.

While Golden’s predecessor Mike White had done a decent job keeping the Gators competitive during his tenure, the fanbase yearned for a return to the glory days of the Billy Donovan era. Unfortunately for White — but fortunately for the Orange and Blue — Florida decided to seek greener pastures.

And greener pastures they have found with Golden, who helped rebuild a depleted roster through the transfer portal while orchestrating a second-half surge last season that saw the Gators reach the Southeastern Conference Championship Game. That success has carried over to the current campaign, as demonstrated by the team’s 13-game winning streak heading into 2025.

Since then, Golden’s gang has dropped a pair of matchups against fellow SEC schools but has remained one of the top-ranked teams in the nation and among the highest seeds in the bracket watches. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and
Myron Medcalf recently released their rankings for the men’s basketball Coach of the Year award, with UF’s skipper logging in at No. 4.

“On the court, Golden and the Gators are a national championship contender. They opened the season with 13 straight wins, then pummeled a then-undefeated and top-ranked Tennessee by 30 points in early January,” they begin. “They were ranked No. 21 in the preseason AP poll, but Golden supplemented five key returnees with Florida Atlantic transfer Alijah Martin.”

Unfortunately, there remains a dark cloud that hovers over Gainesville despite the success.

“We would be remiss to not acknowledge that, off the court, Golden is the subject of a Title IX investigation spurred by multiple allegations of sexual harassment and stalking that became public in early November,” the authors note. “He has acknowledged the inquiry, saying he has been participating, while also consulting with an attorney about bringing on defamation claims. But there’s no timetable for the investigation to be resolved.”

ESPN’s Coach of the Year rankings top 5

Joining Golden in the top five of Borzello and Medcalf’s rankings include his mentor Bruce Pearl — who has led his Auburn Tigers to yet another impressive regular-season run so far — in first place.

Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer, who has also been with his current school for a trio of seasons much like Golden, logs in at No. 2 followed by West Virginia Mountaineers skipper Darian DeVries at No. 3.

The top five is finished off by the Missouri Tigers’ Dennis Gates, who helped coach his team to a one-point victory inside the O’Connell Center against the Gators this season.

Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions.

Florida basketball head coach Todd Golden has been making waves in the coaching world this season, leading the Gators to an impressive record and showing his prowess on the sidelines. With his strategic game plans, player development, and leadership skills, Golden has proven himself to be among the top coaches in college basketball.

It comes as no surprise that Golden is now being considered as one of the top five candidates for the Coach of the Year award. His ability to motivate his players, make crucial in-game decisions, and navigate the challenges of a competitive conference have not gone unnoticed by fans and analysts alike.

As the season progresses and the Gators continue to impress, it’s clear that Todd Golden’s coaching abilities are second to none. Keep an eye on him as the Coach of the Year race heats up – he just might come out on top.

  • Michelle Satter, her home burned in Palisades fire, accepts Sundance award

Welcome to a special Sundance Daily edition of the Wide Shot, a newsletter about the business of entertainment. Sign up here to get it in your inbox.

Good morning! It’s Saturday, Jan. 25, and today’s forecast is for light snow, with 2 to 6 inches expected for Park City, according to the National Weather Service. The high temperature is expected to be 23 degrees. Early reports from our crew on the ground warn that it’s not just chilly but very slippery out there, so be careful.

In this edition of our Sundance Daily newsletter, we recap Friday night’s Sundance Institute gala, share our tips for seeing live music in Park City and unveil the first batch of photos and videos from the L.A. Times Studios. Plus, the latest movie recommendations from our team of film buffs.

The movies worth standing in line for

    An image from “The Stringer.”

    (The Stringer)

“The Stringer” (The Ray Theatre, 7:30 p.m.)

In June 1972, after South Vietnamese planes dropped napalm on the town of Trảng Bàng, a photographer captured the image of grievously burned 9-year-old Phan Thi Kim Phuc fleeing the attack, completely nude, arms akimbo and wearing an expression of agony. “The Terror of War” — more colloquially known as “Napalm Girl” — swiftly became one of the most famous war photographs ever produced, fueling antiwar sentiment and earning a Pulitzer Prize for Nick Ut of the Associated Press. Except, Bao Nguyen’s engrossing investigative documentary alleges, it wasn’t Ut who snapped the picture.

Crisscrossing the globe from Arles, France, to Ho Chi Minh City to Southern California, Nguyen follows VII Foundation Chief Executive Gary Knight as he follows up on a former AP photo editor’s accusation that the image came from a Vietnamese stringer, whose work he says was falsely attributed to Ut. (After learning of “The Stringer’s” existence, the AP conducted its own six-month investigation into the image and released a 22-page report stating, “In the absence of new, convincing evidence to the contrary, the AP has no reason to believe anyone other than Ut took the photo.”) Whether the documentary presents enough “new, convincing evidence” to change the history (and future) of “The Terror of War” will be in the eye of the beholder, but it culminates in a forensic analysis of still images and video from that day in Trang Bang that left this viewer gobsmacked. — Matt Brennan

Dev Patel appears in “Rabbit Trap” by Bryn Chainey, an official selection of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

(Sundance Institute / photo by Andreas Johannessen)

“Rabbit Trap” (Jan. 30 and Feb. 1, Library Center Theatre)

Folk horror isn’t supposed to make a lot of sense and writer-director Bryn Chainey’s feature debut, set in an unusually eventful Welsh forest, won’t disabuse you of that notion. But a mood is brewed — dank and laced with hints of fantasy — and if Peter Strickland and Alex Garland got to these ideas sooner, those guys are swell company to be in. A too-modern-feeling couple (Dev Patel and “Blue Jean” breakout Rosy McEwen) live in the mid-1970s in a cottage with more analog synth equipment than Pink Floyd’s attic. He records field sounds while she makes threatening experimental music. They smoke a lot of cigarettes, take a lot of baths and seem to be avoiding something. Then a nameless local 12-year-old arrives (the arresting Jade Croot), glomming onto their vibe, and the movie tips deliriously toward something pushy and tension-filled. The weirdness, beautifully designed and elliptical, is welcome. — Joshua Rothkopf

No one represents the resilience of Los Angeles and its film community quite like Michelle Satter. Little more than a year after her son, Michael Latt, was shot and killed in his home, Satter’s family home was destroyed in the Palisades fire earlier this month — and yet the Sundance Institute founding director, honoree of this year’s Sundance Institute gala, found notes of hope, even humor, in her speech Friday.

“As some of you know, we recently lost our family home in the fire that burned down most of the Palisades,” a tearful Satter told attendees at the annual fundraiser, held at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley. “It’s a deeply devastating time for us and so many others, a moment that calls for all of us coming together to support our bigger community. As a friend recently noted, and I have to listen to this, ‘Take a deep breath.’ Take a deep breath. We lost our village, but at the end of the day we are the village.”

On a night that also celebrated Sean Wang (“Didi”), Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie (“Sugarcane”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) and James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”), it was Satter who inspired the loudest cheers and longest standing ovations, aided by stirring tributes from filmmaker Marielle Heller, actor Glenn Close and Sundance founder Robert Redford, who penned a letter in tribute to Satter — part of the Sundance family since its founding in 1981 — read by his daughter Amy.

In her remarks Satter also remembered her late son, joking that he didn’t like waking up early when he volunteered on the crew at the Sundance Lab and asking the audience to embrace the Sundance mission he grew up with.

“Let us take this moment to celebrate the collective impact that we can all have when we come together as an inclusive community,” she said. “[Michael] would want to say to all of you, ‘Leading with love, building community and fostering equity and cultural change through art and storytelling, it is our essential way forward.’ ”

In addition to the event’s support for the institute, organizers also encouraged donations to L.A. fire victims and first responders via the Entertainment Community Fund and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation Emergency Wildfire Fund. —Matt Brennan

Where you’ll find us in Park City today

Kaskade arrives on the red carpet at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Feb. 4, 2024.

(Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times)

Ben Harper, who appeared in the documentary “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley,” surprised the sold-out crowd after the film’s premiere at the Ray Theatre on Friday evening.

“If there ever is a college dissertation about how to turn a song into a hymn, Jeff Buckley and ‘Hallelujah’ is the intro,” Harper said before performing the song and participating in a short Q&A with director Amy Berg.

You never know who might show up in Park City — including plenty of musicians, unlike Harper, playing outside of the festival. If you need a break from screenings this weekend, Insomniac Events, which puts on the biggest EDM festivals in the U.S. (think Electric Daisy Carnival and Nocturnal Wonderland) is putting on the High Altitude series with top electronic artists, including Kaskade on Saturday and Dillon Francis on Sunday. (The Marquis Park City, 427 Main St., 9 p.m. Tickets required, 21 and older only.)

And if EDM is not your speed — or you remember the ‘80s hit “And We Danced” — Eric Bazilian, one of the founding members of the group behind it, the Hooters, will perform with fellow singer-songwriter James Bourne on Sunday (5:20 p.m.) and Monday (2:20 p.m.) at the ASCAP Music Café at Acura House of Energy, 550 Swede Alley. —Vanessa Franko

John Lithgow and the cast of “Jimpa” stopped by the L.A. Times Studios on Main Street fresh off their well-received premiere Thursday night. Once Lithgow finished posing for solo portraits, he turned the tables on staff photographer Jason Armond and borrowed his camera to snap his own photo. Michelle Satter, a prominent figure in the film industry and founding director of the Sundance Institute’s Feature Film Program, recently faced a devastating loss when her home was burned in the Palisades fire. Despite this tragedy, she showed incredible resilience and strength as she accepted an award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Satter, who has been a driving force behind the development of independent cinema for decades, was honored with the Vanguard Leadership Award at the festival. In her acceptance speech, she acknowledged the challenges she has faced in recent months but emphasized the importance of perseverance and community support.

“I am grateful for the outpouring of love and support I have received during this difficult time,” Satter said. “While losing my home was a heartbreaking experience, I am reminded of the resilience and strength that we can find within ourselves and within our communities.”

Satter’s dedication to supporting emerging filmmakers and nurturing artistic talent has made a lasting impact on the film industry. Despite the challenges she has faced, she continues to inspire others with her passion and commitment to storytelling.

As we celebrate Satter’s achievements and resilience, let us also remember the importance of coming together in times of need and supporting those who have faced adversity. Michelle Satter’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength that can be found in the face of tragedy.

  • Bills star Dion Dawkins says there should be a ‘Protector of the Year’ award for offensive linemen

Buffalo Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins wants offensive linemen to start getting some recognition.

While the offensive linemen are named to the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro teams, there currently is not an offensive lineman of the year award or anything of that ilk.

“Offensive linemen don’t have awards for being great. There’s not a ‘Protector of the Year’ award. I’m knocking on so many doors now to get this award going. I’m gonna head spear it and make sure this gets done before I’m done playing,” Dawkins said during his press conference on Thursday.

“Because there’s so many greats. So many greats. We have great quarterbacks, we have great running backs, we have rushing titles, we have quarterback passing titles. All of those titles are reflections of the O-lineman, which are the protectors.”

At the college level, offensive linemen are recognized with numerous different awards.

The Lombardi Award is awarded to the best college football lineman of the year, tight end or linebacker. This season, it was awarded to Texas Longhorn left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr.

The Outland Trophy is given to the best interior lineman both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Banks also won that award this season.

The Rimington Trophy is awarded to the best center, which was given to Ohio State Buckeye’s star center Seth McLaughlin.

The NFL awards the MVP, Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, Walter Payton Man of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, and Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The only award offensive linemen have a realistic chance of winning is Walter Payton Man of the Year, an award given for acts of service to the community, which is an off-the-field award.

Dawkins has spent all eight seasons of his career with the Bills, which will be put the test this weekend when the Bills take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship.

Dawkins, a four-time Pro Bowler, will be tasked with stopping star defensive lineman Chris Jones, George Karlaftis, Leo Chenal and others who will try to pursue Josh Allen.

The Bills and Chiefs are set to play at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Buffalo Bills star offensive lineman Dion Dawkins recently expressed his belief that there should be a new award added to the NFL’s annual honors – a “Protector of the Year” award for offensive linemen.

In a recent interview, Dawkins discussed the importance of the offensive line in the success of a team and how often their hard work and contributions can go unnoticed. He emphasized that offensive linemen are tasked with protecting the quarterback and creating running lanes for the running back, making them vital components of a team’s success.

Dawkins suggested that an award specifically recognizing the efforts of offensive linemen would be a way to highlight their importance and give them the recognition they deserve. The “Protector of the Year” award would shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes of the gridiron and showcase their impact on the game.

With offensive linemen often overshadowed by flashy skill position players, Dawkins’ proposal for a new award could bring a greater appreciation for the hard work and dedication of these crucial players. As the backbone of any offense, offensive linemen deserve recognition for their contributions to the success of their team.

In NFL awards, offensive linemen always come up empty. No offensive lineman has ever won NFL MVP, Offensive Player of the Year or Offensive Rookie of the Year. It’s extremely rare for any offensive lineman even to get a single vote for any of those awards.

Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins wants to change that. Dawkins said he is working on lobbying the NFL to start an Offensive Lineman of the Year award to recognize the best in the game at the most overlooked position.

“Offensive linemen don’t have awards for being great,” Dawkins said. “There’s not a protector of the year award. I’m knocking at so many doors now to get this award going. I’m gonna spearhead it and make sure it gets done before I’m done playing. Because there’s so many greats, and we have great quarterbacks, we have great running backs, we have rushing titles, we have quarterback passing titles. All those titles are reflections on the o-linemen, which are the protectors.”

In college football the Outland Trophy for the best lineman in the country, as well as the Rimington Trophy for the best center, and some conferences have their own awards for offensive linemen. But the NFL has nothing of the kind. Dawkins’ idea is a good one.

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins is pushing for the NFL to establish an Offensive Lineman of the Year award. Dawkins, who has been a key player on the Bills’ offensive line for several seasons, believes that offensive linemen deserve more recognition for their hard work and contributions to their teams’ success.

In a recent interview, Dawkins explained that offensive linemen often go unnoticed and underappreciated, despite being crucial to the success of an offense. He pointed out that quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers receive plenty of accolades and awards, but offensive linemen rarely get the recognition they deserve.

Dawkins has started a campaign on social media to raise awareness for his cause, using the hashtag #OLoftheYear. He has also reached out to other offensive linemen around the league to garner support for the award.

Many fans and players have voiced their support for Dawkins’ initiative, with some suggesting that the NFL should consider adding a Defensive Lineman of the Year award as well.

It remains to be seen whether the NFL will heed Dawkins’ call and establish an Offensive Lineman of the Year award, but one thing is clear: Dion Dawkins is determined to ensure that offensive linemen get the recognition they deserve.
