Offensive linemen should get their own award category
Scream it from the mountain tops, Dion.
The Bills left tackle is absolutely correct. Offensive linemen need their own awards category at NFL Honors. Far too much of their work goes unnoticed. For most blockers, the only time they hear their name called during a TV broadcast is when something negative happens.
Not a single offensive lineman was nominated for any award in 2024.
We know the NFL MVP has essentially become a quarterback award — with Saquon Barkley stating his case to upset that trend in 2024. In response, the Offensive Player of the Year award has become the top non-QB weapon.
If they’re never recognized in those categories, blockers should get their own. College football gives awards to O-linemen. The NFL should, too.
Offensive linemen are often referred to as the unsung heroes of football, as they are crucial in protecting the quarterback and creating holes for the running back. Despite their importance to the game, offensive linemen rarely receive recognition or awards compared to other positions such as quarterbacks or wide receivers. That’s why it’s time for offensive linemen to have their own award category. These players work tirelessly in the trenches, often sacrificing their bodies for the success of the team. They deserve to be recognized for their hard work and dedication.
An award for offensive linemen would not only acknowledge their contributions to the game, but also inspire and motivate other players to excel in this position. It would showcase the skill and athleticism required to play on the offensive line, and elevate the profile of these often overlooked players.
So let’s give offensive linemen the recognition they deserve by creating a dedicated award category for them. It’s time to shine a spotlight on these unsung heroes of the gridiron.

Lamar Jackson Wins Pro Football Writers of America MVP Award
Lamar Jackson will find out next month if he wins the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award for the third time, but he appears to be on his way.
Writers who cover the league most regularly have given him their nod. The Professional Football Writers of America named Jackson the 2024 NFL’s Most Valuable Player in voting conducted by PFWA members.
It’s another indication that Jackson is the favorite to be named the league’s MVP again during Super Bowl week. When he was named the league’s MVP in 2019 and 2023, Jackson was also named the PFWA’s MVP.
Leading Baltimore to its second straight AFC North title, Jackson was first-team All-Pro and set career highs for passing yards (4,172), touchdown passes (41), quarterback rating (119.6) and completions (316).
He led the league in rushing yards by a quarterback (915) and became the first player in league history with at least 4,000 passing yards and 800 rushing yards. He also became the league’s all-time rushing leader at quarterback with 6,173 yards, surpassing the previous record held by Michael Vick (6,109).
Jackson’s third MVP from the PFWA ties him with quarterback Tom Brady (2007, 2010 and 2017) for second-most in the organization’s history. Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers received the award four times from the PFWA.
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who led the NFL with 2,005 rushing yards, was named PFWA Offensive Player of the Year. Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who surrendered the fewest receiving yards at his position when targeted by opposing quarterbacks, was named PFWA Defensive Player of the Year.
Lamar Jackson Wins Pro Football Writers of America MVP AwardIn a historic moment for the NFL, Lamar Jackson has been named the Pro Football Writers of America MVP for the 2019 season. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback had a phenomenal year, leading his team to a 14-2 record and securing the top seed in the AFC playoffs.
Jackson’s electrifying playmaking ability and dynamic dual-threat skills set him apart from the competition, as he became the first player in NFL history to throw for over 3,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. His 36 touchdown passes and 7 rushing touchdowns solidified his status as the league’s most valuable player.
The PFWA MVP award is a prestigious honor voted on by members of the media who cover the NFL, making it a true testament to Jackson’s exceptional performance on the field. With this latest accolade, Jackson cements his place as one of the brightest young stars in the league and a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
Congratulations to Lamar Jackson on this well-deserved recognition as the PFWA MVP, and here’s to many more incredible seasons ahead. #LamarJackson #PFWA #MVP #NFL
