Without Ayton (knee) and Williams (hand), rookie Donovan Clingan is lined up as a good value play to consider on Friday against the Hornets.
On Friday night’s three-game DraftKings slate, the Trail Blazers are the only team playing for the second night in a row. On Thursday, Portland beat the Magic despite Deandre Ayton (knee) being ruled out due to knee soreness. Robert Williams III (hand) started in his place, but both big men were ruled out for this evening on Portland’s injury report. In better news on that injury report, rookie Donovan Clingan ($4,000; ankle) was listed as probable. Clingan has missed the last five games with a left ankle sprain, but he should be in store for plenty of work on Friday in his return and be an excellent bargain value play for DFS contests.

C Donovan Clingan at Charlotte Hornets, $4,000
Clingan was the No. 7 overall pick in last year’s NBA Draft out of UCONN and has played 31 games for the Blazers this season. He has averaged 16.6 minutes per game while contributing 5.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks for 18.4 fantasy points per game.
This season, Clingan has started eight games, averaging 8.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.9 blocks in 22.9 minutes. He had double-digit rebounds in three straight games before missing the last five games and posted over 27 fantasy points in each of those three games.
Without Williams and Ayton, Clingan will get as many minutes as he can handle, and he was playing over 20 minutes per game before the injury. Even though he doesn’t usually score a ton of points, his non-scoring contributions should be enough to make him a great value play at only $4K.
Aside from Clingan, Jabari Walker ($3,300) and Duop Reath ($3,000) could also see increased playing time, with Walker offering the better fantasy upside of those two alternatives.
With Deandre Ayton and Robert Williams ruled out for tonight’s game, Donovan Clingan is set to see an increase in playing time and production. Did Phoenix Suns Make Mistake by Trading Ayton?
PHOENIX — Two months into the 2024-25 NBA season – one thing is certain: The Phoenix Suns are stuck in a rut of inconsistency – especially after dropping winnable contests against the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons.
One topic of discussion that has been brought up to varying degrees over the last week is whether the Suns made the correct decision by moving on from former number 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton over a year ago.

One could argue that the departure off of Ayton has only magnified other holes within the roster – as Ayton was a solid, if unspectacular rim protector – and a great play finisher around the rim.
Ayton has remained moderately productive in Portland as well – despite playing on a squad chalk-full of bigs. Meanwhile in Phoenix, Jusuf Nurkic has spent much of his time struggling with things that Ayton did at fairly high levels.
The other piece of the equation that could hurt is the fact that Phoenix sent Toumani Camara out in the deal as well after the Trail Blazers insisted that he be included.
Camara has been a high-impact defender since virtually game one of his career now, but his 36.4% mark from three-point range at over 4 attempts per game looms large currently.
Camara could fit in extremely nicely into the wing rotation while also further insulating potential injuries or cold stretches of play.
The one silver lining could be Grayson Allen.
The second-year Sun has become a quality rotational piece and could either continue to be that or could serve as a trade chip to upgrade the roster elsewhere.
At the end of the day, the Suns likely lost the trade. Portland and Milwaukee received the best returns in the deal, but the Suns ultimately had intangible factors such as team chemistry that had to be taken into account with Ayton – the union had run its course.
The Suns were also handicapped by the 4-year maximum offer sheet that Ayton signed with the Indiana Pacers in which they had to match.
Losing Ayton for something rather than nothing was always the right move – and his departure felt like an inevitability despite a potential talent dip in direct response to the transaction.
Nurkic will be off the books for Phoenix in the summer of 2026 – while a potential Bradley Beal trade could give the Suns the ability to maneuver the market for upgrades sooner than expected – so it could end up working out in favor of the franchise.

Portland Gets Incredible Haul in Deal For Deandre Ayton
At 9-20, the Portland Trail Blazers’ 2024-25 tank is well underway. Still, the team could always do more to avoid winning this season, especially with the 7-21 Utah Jazz and the 5-25 New Orleans Pelicans (losers of seven straight) both also in the Western Conference, and clubs like the 7-22 Charlotte Hornets, 7-23 Toronto Raptors and 4-23 Washington Wizards stinking it up in the East.
Several Portland veterans might be better served helping contenders elsewhere, and while many have been floated in trade chatter already, Trail Blazers general manager Joe Cronin has yet to make a move.
But that’s why we’re here.
A fresh three-team trade proposal with the Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets, cooked up by our own Matt Levine, sees Portland ditching two of its pricier players who don’t really match the timeline of the club’s intended young core.
Blazers receive: D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, Max Christie, Grant Williams, Vasilije Micic, a 2026 first-round pick from the Hornets, and two second-round draft picks from the Lakers
Lakers receive: Anfernee Simons and Cody Martin
Hornets receive: Deandre Ayton and Maxwell Lewis
Ayton, 26, is the team’s highest-paid player. The 7-foot Arizona product is earning $34 million this year, and is under contract through 2025-26. In 20 games thus far, the Trail Blazers’ starting center is averaging a career-low 14.4 points on 56.3 percent shooting from the floor and 60.9 percent shooting from the foul line, 10.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists, plus 0.9 steals and 0.9 blocks a night. He has hardly looked like the No. 1 draft in 2018, who was selected ahead of future studs like Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Trae Young.
Simons, 25, was a nice late first round draft find by the Trail Blazers (selected at No. 24 in Ayton’s draft), but just because he’s a homegrown talent doesn’t mean Portland should let sentiment get in the way of a good trade. Portland’s current starting point guard is making $25.9 million this season, and like Ayton will become an unrestricted free agent in 2026. In 26 bouts, the 6-foot-3 vet is averaging 17.4 points on .412/.323/.907 shooting splits, 4.8 assists and 2.5 rebounds a night.
The prize in this proposed deal is really the 2026 Hornets first and the pair of second rounders. Russell is on an expiring deal this season and could be flipped again to another club, or held onto by Portland in a bid for bonus summer cap sapce. Vanderbilt has missed the entire season — and much of the last one — with an injury, and is starting to look like a sunk cost on the first season of a four-year, $48 million extension he inked with L.A. Williams, a versatile combo forward, could have some further trade appeal on a good contract or could be a serviceable vet. Christie, 22, is a solid 3-and-D wing worth retaining.
Micic, 30, is only in his second NBA season, and has turned heads with his production in Charlotte so far. He could function as essentially a much cheaper Simons — a veteran option at the point while Scoot Henderson develops.
