  • Clippers could upgrade backcourt by trading for Trail Blazers’ $100 million young guard

The Los Angeles Clippers have had a solid season thus far but they might look to upgrade their roster ahead of the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline to better their championship odds.

Los Angeles currently sits sixth in the Western Conference standings with a 26-19 record. This is despite the fact that their superstar forward Kawhi Leonard missed much of the first half of the season.

With Leonard out, the Clippers saw James Harden, Ivica Zubac and Norman Powell lead the way. Of course, Harden has been great throughout his career but he has taken another step forward this season after struggling last year. Along with Harden, both Powell and Zubac have also stepped up and are currently putting together the best seasons of their careers.

While the Clippers do currently hold a playoff spot in the West, they could still look to upgrade their roster ahead of the trade deadline. One area that they could focus on is their backcourt, and they could upgrade it by making a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons.

In a possible trade, Los Angeles could send P.J. Tucker, Derrick Jones Jr., Bones Hyland and draft capital to Portland for Simons and Duop Reath. With the Blazers stuck in a rebuild, they are clearly prioritizing a starting backcourt of Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe, which has made Simons expendable in the trade market.

For the Clippers, this trade would upgrade their backcourt while also giving them more center depth. Simons is a great scorer and he has also improved his playmaking skills, which could lead Los Angeles to try him out at point guard to eventually replace Harden once he retires.

Los Angeles would also receive Reath in the deal to upgrade their frontcourt depth behind Zubac.

By making this trade, the Clippers would upgrade their roster for a championship run this season while also adding an emerging star to build around once their veterans decide to hang it up.

According to recent reports, the Los Angeles Clippers are looking to upgrade their backcourt by potentially trading for the Portland Trail Blazers’ young star guard, CJ McCollum. With a hefty $100 million contract, McCollum could provide the Clippers with the scoring punch and playmaking abilities they need to compete in the tough Western Conference.

McCollum, known for his scoring prowess and ability to create his own shot, could be the missing piece the Clippers need to take their team to the next level. Pairing him with All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard and dynamic point guard Paul George could create a formidable trio that could contend with the best teams in the league.

While the Clippers would have to give up some assets in order to acquire McCollum, the potential payoff could be well worth it. With the NBA trade deadline approaching, it will be interesting to see if the Clippers pull the trigger on a deal for the talented young guard.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the trade deadline approaches. Would you like to see the Clippers trade for CJ McCollum? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Trail Blazers’ backcourt duo is rounding into shape

Trail Blazers’ backcourt duo is rounding into shape

The Portland Trail Blazers’ win Thursday night over the Denver Nuggets saw Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe combine for 55 points, the most this season.

Their performance marked just the third time this season that both reached 20 points.

“This is kind of what you would hope you get from two guys like that who are pretty dynamic,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said.

Simons scored 28 points, including the game-winner as time expired, to give the Blazers a 126-124 win. Sharpe added 27 while improving his decision-making.

“I was very happy with the shots that he was able to generate and get tonight,” Billups said.

Should their performance become a trend rather than an anomaly, victories could increase in frequency for the Blazers (9-18)

Given how little the pair have played together, their lack of consistent success sharing the backcourt is understandable.

Last season, the duo both appeared in just 13 games with Sharpe missing 50 and Simons, 36.

“They missed a ton of time together last season,” Billups said.

This season, Sharpe missed the first eight games with a shoulder injury. Soon after his return, Simons sat out three games. Consequently, they’ve played just 16 games together this season for a total of 29, dating back to the start of last season.

    Not ideal.

Sharpe’s highest-scoring games this season came on Nov. 13 (33 points against Minnesota) and Nov. 17 (32 points against Atlanta). Both were victories played without Simons, out with an illness.

On Nov. 23 at Houston, Sharpe scored 25 while Simons poured in 25. On Dec. 1, Sharpe scored 22 in a loss to Dallas, while Simons added 27.

Then came Thursday night. Billups praised his guards’ aggressiveness and good decision-making, which led to good shots for them and others.

“Every time the ball swung to either one of them, they were just aggressive to make the right play, and not necessarily the shot,” Billups said. “And you just never know, when you’re playing like that, the ball just pops around, pops around and all of the sudden it’s back in your hands.”

Simons said the pair is still learning how to play together as starters. Their communication, he said, is improving as they gain a feel for how to play off each other. Gradually, Simons, the point guard, is learning how to set up Sharpe, the shooting guard, for success.

“We’re trying to figure it out,” Simons said.

Should that happen, the Blazers could finally have an idea of what their backcourt could look like beyond this season.

The Portland Trail Blazers’ dynamic backcourt duo of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum is starting to hit their stride and showcase their chemistry on the court. Lillard, a six-time NBA All-Star, and McCollum, a talented scorer and playmaker, have been instrumental in leading the Trail Blazers to success this season.

Lillard, known for his clutch performances and ability to take over games in crunch time, has been putting up impressive numbers, averaging over 28 points and 7 assists per game. McCollum, on the other hand, has been a reliable second option, averaging over 22 points per game and providing valuable scoring punch for the team.

Together, Lillard and McCollum form one of the most potent backcourt duos in the NBA, capable of lighting up the scoreboard and carrying the team to victory on any given night. Their chemistry and understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses have only improved over time, making them an even more formidable duo on the court.

As the Trail Blazers continue to compete in a tough Western Conference, the performance of Lillard and McCollum will be crucial to their success. With their backcourt duo rounding into shape and playing at a high level, the Trail Blazers are poised to make a deep playoff run and compete with the best teams in the league.

  • Scoot Henderson News: Posts solid numbers in backcourt

Henderson chipped in 14 points (4-11 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 4-4 FT), six rebounds, four assists and one steal over 26 minutes during Monday’s 132-108 loss to the Mavericks.

Henderson was a valuable reserve amid mediocre results from Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe. Although Simons and Sharpe are locked into first-unit roles, Henderson is proving his worth as a backup. The youngster skipped college and went pro right out of high school, and his coronation as Damian Lillard’s heir apparent was a bit premature. Henderson is a key piece of Portland’s future plans, but he’s only on the cusp of fantasy consideration as he develops with the second unit.
