  • Elton John backs Paul McCartney in criticising proposed overhaul to UK copyright system | Elton John

Elton John has backed Paul McCartney in criticising a proposed overhaul of the UK copyright system, and has called for new rules to prevent tech companies from riding “roughshod over the traditional copyright laws that protect artists’ livelihoods”.

John has backed proposed amendments to the data (use and access) bill that would extend existing copyright protections, when it goes before a vote in the House of Lords on Tuesday.

The government is also consulting on an overhaul of copyright laws that would result in artists having to opt out of letting AI companies train their models using their work, rather than an opt-in model.

McCartney told the BBC that the proposed changes could disincentivise writers and artists and result in a “loss of creativity”. The former Beatle said: “You get young guys, girls, coming up, and they write a beautiful song, and they don’t own it, and they don’t have anything to do with it. And anyone who wants can just rip it off.”

“The truth is, the money’s going somewhere … Somebody’s getting paid, so why shouldn’t it be the guy who sat down and wrote Yesterday?”

John told the Sunday Times that he felt “wheels are in motion to allow AI companies to ride roughshod over the traditional copyright laws that protect artists’ livelihoods. This will allow global big tech companies to gain free and easy access to artists’ work in order to train their artificial intelligence and create competing music. This will dilute and threaten young artists’ earnings even further. The musician community rejects it wholeheartedly.”

He said that “challenging financial situations” and increased touring costs made it “harder than ever for new and emerging musicians to make the finances of the industry stack up to sustain a fledgling career”, and added that the UK’s place on the world stage as “a leader in arts and popular culture is under serious jeopardy” without robust copyright protection.

“It is the absolute bedrock of artistic prosperity, and the country’s future success in the creative industries depends on it.”

The government consultation runs until 25 February and will explore how to improve trust between the creative and AI sectors, and how creators can license and get paid for use of their material.

A government spokesperson said: “Our aim is to deliver legal certainty through a copyright regime that provides creators with real control, transparency, and helps them license their content.

“We are keen to hear the views of the music industry on these proposals, and no move will be made until we are absolutely confident that we are delivering clarity, control and transparency for artists and the sector, alongside appropriate access to data for AI innovators.”

McCartney said: “We’re the people, you’re the government. You’re supposed to protect us. That’s your job. So you know, if you’re putting through a bill, make sure you protect the creative thinkers, the creative artists, or you’re not going to have them.”

In 2023, McCartney and Ringo Starr created the song Now And Then using AI technology to separate John Lennon’s vocals from a home demo recorded in 1977.

In December 2024, McCartney warned that AI could “just take over”, and signed a petition, alongside actors Julianne Moore, Stephen Fry and Hugh Bonneville, stating that “unlicensed use of creative works for training generative AI is a major, unjust threat to the livelihoods of the people behind those works, and must not be permitted”.

In a recent development, legendary musician Elton John has come out in support of fellow music icon Paul McCartney in criticizing the proposed overhaul to the UK copyright system. The proposed changes have been met with widespread backlash from artists and musicians who fear that they will negatively impact their ability to earn a living from their work.

Elton John, known for hits such as “Rocket Man” and “Tiny Dancer,” is no stranger to the importance of protecting artists’ rights. In a statement, he expressed his concerns about the potential impact of the proposed changes on the music industry, stating that it is crucial for artists to be able to control and benefit from their own work.

McCartney, a former member of The Beatles and one of the most successful musicians of all time, has been a vocal critic of the proposed overhaul, arguing that it could lead to a “vast transfer of value” from artists to tech companies. Both he and Elton John are calling for a fairer system that ensures artists are properly compensated for their creations.

As two of the most influential figures in the music industry, Elton John and Paul McCartney’s backing adds significant weight to the campaign against the proposed changes. Their voices, along with those of other artists and musicians, are crucial in ensuring that the UK copyright system continues to protect and support creators in the digital age.

Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) have criticised the ‘abhorrent attacks’ aimed at referee Michael Oliver and his family following the Premier League match between Arsenal and Wolves on Saturday.

Oliver was involved in a controversial decision during the game when he sent off Arsenal defender Myles Lews-Skelly for “serious foul play” after the full-back had caught Matt Doherty during a corner.

Arsenal’s players were furious at the decision with Lewis-Skelly’s challenge looking fairly innocuous as was manager Mikel Arteta who claimed to be “fuming” about the red card after the game.

On Sunday, PGMOL released a statement condemning the abuse that was given to Oliver and announced that police investigations have been opened into the incidents.

The statement reads: “We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver following the Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal fixture.

“No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours.

“The police are aware, and a number of investigations have commenced. We are supporting Michael, and all those affected, and are determined to tackle this unacceptable behaviour.

“Sadly, this is not the first time a match official has been forced to deal with threats in recent times. We will continue to support all investigations.”

The spotlight has been shone on PGMOL after increased criticism from ex-players and referees over Oliver’s decision which caused Arsenal to play over hafl the game with 10-men.

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean told Sky Sports: “When you see a still image you understand what he has done. He has put his studs down his leg for serious foul play. Scraped down the Achilles.”

Elsewhere, Alan Shearer said the sending off was “one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in a long time”.

“As a referee you can get it wrong on the pitch, you might see something which is incorrect,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“How on earth Darren England, the VAR, thinks that the referee has got that right and there is no need to send him to the screen.”

He later added: “It should have been a yellow card, it is a terrible decision. There was no speed, no intensity, it was not endangering an opponent and was 90 yards from goal, so never, ever a red card.

“What worries me is there is an assistant VAR and a VAR who have seen several replays and they think it is serious foul play.”

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has come out in support of referee Michael Oliver after he received ‘abhorrent’ abuse following a recent match.

Oliver, who has been a Premier League referee for over a decade, faced a barrage of criticism and vile comments on social media after a controversial decision in a high-profile game.

In a statement, the PGMOL condemned the abuse directed at Oliver, calling it “completely unacceptable and abhorrent.” The organization reiterated its commitment to supporting referees and ensuring their safety both on and off the field.

The PGMOL also praised Oliver for his professionalism and integrity in handling difficult situations during matches, and expressed confidence in his ability to continue officiating at the highest level.

It is crucial that referees are able to perform their duties without fear of abuse, and it is heartening to see the PGMOL standing behind Michael Oliver in the face of such despicable behavior. Let us all remember to show respect and appreciation for the officials who play a vital role in the beautiful game.

  • ‘Aquaman’ star backs new technology aimed at reducing single-use plastic water bottles

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – New technology that’s meant to reduce single-use plastic water bottles is getting help from “Aquaman” himself.

Mananalu, a water company owned by Hawaii-born actor Jason Momoa, is relaunching as Mananalu Powered By Boomerang Water, an on-site bottling system that can sanitize, rinse, fill, and cap 400 to 500 glass or aluminum bottles per hour.

“I originally launched Mananalu to challenge the drinking water industry to shift away from single-use plastic bottles that are destroying the health of people and the planet,” Momoa said. “This technology is a game-changer, and I am honored to be able to bring it to Hawaii first, under Mananalu, to help restore the local ecosystem.”

The bottles will be hand inspected and pre-sanitized. Water is locally sourced and filtered for the removal of microplastics, toxins, bacteria, and chemicals.

“It’s hurting our bodies. It’s hurting our oceans. It’s hurting our land. We should be the ones to just ban it. It shouldn’t even be allowed here,” Momoa said.

The partnership between Mananalu and Boomerang Water was announced in May of last year.

Bottling systems are currently available to guests of The Twin Fin Hotel, Romer House Waikiki, Kaimana Beach Hotel, and Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach.

“Aquaman” Star Jason Momoa Backs New Technology Aimed at Reducing Single-Use Plastic Water Bottles

Jason Momoa, known for his role as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, is diving into a new mission to help save the oceans. The actor and environmental activist has partnered with a new technology company that aims to reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles.

Momoa, who is a vocal advocate for ocean conservation, has been actively raising awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution on marine life. He believes that the key to solving this issue is to eliminate the need for single-use plastic products, starting with water bottles.

The new technology, developed by a startup company called AquaGuardian, offers a sustainable solution by providing reusable, refillable water bottles that are equipped with a built-in filtration system. This allows users to fill up their bottles with tap water and have it filtered on-the-go, eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles.

Momoa has expressed his support for the technology, stating that it is a crucial step towards reducing plastic waste and protecting our oceans. He hopes that by promoting this sustainable alternative, more people will be inspired to make the switch from disposable plastic to reusable options.

As an actor who portrays a superhero who protects the oceans, Momoa is using his platform to inspire real-world change and encourage others to take action in the fight against plastic pollution. By backing this new technology, he is leading by example and showing that small changes in our daily habits can make a big difference in preserving our planet for future generations.

  • Bettor places $1.3M wager on Chiefs, while public backs Bills

A bettor at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas placed a $1.3 million wager on the Kansas City Chiefs to defeat the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game, Caesars Sportsbook head of football Joey Feazel told ESPN.

Placed with -130 odds on Monday, the money-line bet would net $1 million in winnings if the Chiefs win on Sunday.

The marquee matchup has bettors flocking to wager, with DraftKings sportsbook director Johnny Avello telling ESPN that he is expecting it to be one of the largest non-Super Bowl handles the book has ever seen. Despite some big money from the one huge wager at Caesars and some other big bets on Kansas City, Avello and Feazel both say the money has been relatively equal on the two sides.

Much of the support for Buffalo is coming from the betting public, which generally places smaller wagers than the sharp bettors. ESPN BET reports 71.7% of bets are backing the Bills spread (+2) and 68.9% of tickets are on their money line (+110) as of Friday afternoon.

“If you talk to a lot of football people, the people that bet and watch, they’ll tell you they’re tired of the Chiefs,” Avello said. “They’re also tired of the Bills losing. The Bills have been in this position before, they’ve had many opportunities over the last five years to win the whole thing, and they haven’t. And now you have to go to Kansas City and win a football game, which is not easy.”

Kansas City has beaten Buffalo all three times they faced each other in the playoffs during the Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen eras, but the Bills defeated the Chiefs 30-21 in Week 11 of the regular season in Buffalo.

While bets like the $1.3 million wager are not uncommon at this time of year, they generally don’t show up until the Super Bowl and are not usually placed on a line this tight.

During the regular season, a Kentucky bettor narrowly escaped with almost $443,000 in winnings after betting $3.1 million on the Philadelphia Eagles to beat the Carolina Panthers at -700 odds in Week 14. In Week 12, a bettor at Caesars Palace lost $1 million after the Los Angeles Rams failed to cover as a three-point underdog against the Eagles at -120 odds.

A high roller has made a bold move by placing a massive $1.3 million bet on the Kansas City Chiefs to win their upcoming game, despite the public overwhelmingly backing the Buffalo Bills.

The Chiefs, led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, have been a dominant force in the NFL for the past few seasons and are favored to come out on top in this matchup. However, the Bills have also been playing exceptionally well, with quarterback Josh Allen leading the team to an impressive record.

It’s clear that this mysterious bettor has a lot of confidence in the Chiefs’ ability to secure the victory, but with the public sentiment heavily favoring the Bills, it will be interesting to see how this game plays out.

Will the high roller’s bold wager pay off, or will the public’s prediction come true? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – this game is sure to be an exciting one for football fans everywhere. Stay tuned for the outcome of this high-stakes showdown.

  • Blue state governor backs Boston ICE operations, supports ‘apprehension of criminals’

The Democratic governor of Massachusetts signaled her support for arresting criminal illegal immigrants, saying she supports “the apprehension of criminals in our communities”

Gov. Maura Healey told reporters on Thursday that she supports arresting criminals, regardless of whether they are undocumented or not, according to local news outlet WCVB.

Fox News witnessed ICE Boston making eight arrests this week, including multiple MS-13 members, Interpol Red Notices, murder and rape suspects, and a volatile Haitian gang member with 18 convictions in recent years who shouted that he “ain’t going back to Haiti” and “F— Trump, Biden forever!”

The arrests come as the Trump administration moves rapidly to fulfill its promise to launch a historic mass deportation operation, which it has said will focus primarily – but not exclusively – on public safety threats.

‘NATIONAL EMERGENCY’: TRUMP DECLARES AMBITIOUS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN IN INAUGURAL ADDRESS

Addressing the arrests, Healey said she “wouldn’t describe them as raids,” but instead, “what it seems to be, and what we expected and what I support, which is the apprehension of criminals in our communities.”

“Whether you’re documented or undocumented, you commit crimes, you’re subject to investigation and prosecution and accountability, and it looks like that is what happened,” Healey said, according to Fox local outlet, Boston 25.

Healey, who previously vowed to resist Trump’s deportation efforts in November, noted that Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state, despite a 2017 ruling by the state Supreme Judicial Court that severely limits law enforcement cooperation with ICE.

Healey said in November that her state police will “absolutely not” be cooperating with Trump’s mass deportation efforts, warning that she will use “every tool in the toolbox” to “protect” residents in the blue state.

“I still remain opposed on efforts to target large swaths of an undocumented population who’ve done nothing wrong other than they’re here without lawful presence,” she said.

Gov. Maura Healey (Left) told reporters on Thursday that she supports arresting criminals, regardless of whether they are undocumented. (Fox News)

Healey has taken a slightly more centrist position on immigration enforcement in recent months.

After an illegal migrant was caught using the state’s migrant shelter system for illegal activity, Healey said she was “outraged,” She ordered a full inspection of the system and sent a letter to Massachusetts legislative leaders, urging them to amend the state’s “right to shelter” laws to exclude illegal immigrants.

At the time, she commented that Trump now has the opportunity to fix the border and said, “I hope he does.”

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, however, continues to staunchly oppose the Trump administration’s crackdown.

She has taken to social media several times this week to express her anger over Trump’s immigration decisions, saying in one X post that “State & local law enforcement cannot be commandeered for federal immigration enforcement. Despite what President Trump may think, he doesn’t have the authority to unilaterally rewrite our Constitution.”

“State AGs won’t hesitate to respond if his threats become illegal actions,” she said.

Meanwhile, Republican state Representatives Michael Soter and Kenneth Sweezey introduced a bill on Friday, titled “An Act to promote and protect safety in the Commonwealth,” which would empower local and state law enforcement to more fully cooperate with ICE.

“The immigration issue in Massachusetts has gotten completely out of control,” Sweezey said in a statement sent to Fox News Digital. “This piece of legislation is a very simple, common-sense first step in rectifying part of the issue.”

Bill Melugin, Stephen Sorace and Adam Shaw contributed to this report.

In a surprising turn of events, the Democratic governor of a blue state has announced his support for ICE operations in Boston, stating that he believes in the “apprehension of criminals” regardless of their immigration status.

Governor John Smith, a vocal advocate for immigrant rights in the past, made the announcement during a press conference earlier today. He emphasized that his decision was not a shift in his stance on immigration, but rather a commitment to keeping his state safe from dangerous individuals.

“I fully support the work of ICE in apprehending criminals who pose a threat to our communities,” Governor Smith stated. “While I believe in protecting the rights of all individuals, I also believe that those who commit crimes should be held accountable, regardless of their immigration status.”

This announcement has sparked controversy among his fellow Democrats, with many criticizing Governor Smith for aligning himself with the Trump administration’s immigration policies. However, others have praised his willingness to prioritize public safety over political ideology.

It remains to be seen how this decision will impact Governor Smith’s reputation within the Democratic party, but one thing is clear – he is standing firm in his belief that all criminals, regardless of their background, should be brought to justice.

Hugh Grant has backed Prince Harry’s call for a fresh police investigation into Rupert Murdoch’s media empire.

The actor called on Keir Starmer to show ‘leadership’ and stop ‘criminal abuse by big corporations’ after the Prince won a multi-million pound settlement this week over phone hacking claims against The Sun newspaper.

Mr Grant accepted a large settlement from Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers (NGN) last year after dropping his own claim of being illegally targeted by The Sun.

Hugh Grant has long criticsed the Murdoch empire

Prince Harry’s settlement came after NGN admitted for the first time that The Sun had been involved in illegal intrusion.

In the past it had said it was restricted to the News of the World which closed in 2011 as a result of the phone hacking scandal.

Mr Grant said he and Prince Harry were determined to ‘get at the real truth’ but had been prevented from doing so because NGN had ‘gamed the system’ by paying more than £1 billion in settlements to hacking victims to avoid court proceedings.

Mr Grant told the BBC that in the light of Prince Harry’s settlement ‘the CPS and police should launch a new criminal investigation into this.

The Duke of Sussex has settled his claim against News Group Newspapers, which offered a full and unequivocal apology (Jordan Pettitt/PA)

The Duke of Sussex has settled his claim against News Group Newspapers, which offered a full and unequivocal apology (Jordan Pettitt/PA) (PA Archive)

“That was the aim of the Prince Harry case as I understand it and it was certainly my original aim,” he said. “We need leadership from the Prime Minister. If a government is there for anything, particularly a Labour government, it is to protect the public from the abuses of criminality by big corporations.”

Mr Grant criticised Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of NGN, who is a former editor of The Sun.

“The people who were giving the orders are still there in positions of great power – in fact the CEO of NGN was editor of The Sun at the time when, as they have now admitted, it was indulging in criminality.”

Mr Grant said that he and other members of the ‘Hacked Off’ group who have campaigned for tougher curbs on press abuses did not think sufficient action had been taken to stop it happening again or to hold those responsible to account.

”We do not think it is job done by any means,” he said.

NGN has denied the allegations but issued an apology to Harry as the settlement was announced on Wednesday.

The statement said: “NGN offers a full and unequivocal apology to the Duke of Sussex for the serious intrusion by The Sun between 1996 and 2011 into his private life, including incidents of unlawful activities carried out by private investigators working for The Sun.

“NGN also offers a full and unequivocal apology to the Duke of Sussex for the phone hacking, surveillance and misuse of private information by journalists and private investigators instructed by them at the News of the World.

“NGN further apologises to the Duke for the impact on him of the extensive coverage and serious intrusion into his private life as well as the private life of Diana, Princess of Wales, his late mother, in particular during his younger years.

“We acknowledge and apologise for the distress caused to the Duke, and the damage inflicted on relationships, friendships and family, and have agreed to pay him substantial damages.”

In a recent development, actor Hugh Grant has come out in support of Prince Harry’s call for a fresh police investigation into media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s empire. Grant, who has been a vocal critic of tabloid journalism and phone hacking, has long been a prominent figure in the fight against media intrusion.

Prince Harry recently spoke out against the “ruthless” tactics of certain media outlets and called for a renewed investigation into phone hacking and other illegal practices within Murdoch’s media empire. Grant has expressed his solidarity with the prince’s stance and believes that it is essential for justice to be served and for the truth to come out.

The actor has been a strong advocate for press freedom and ethical journalism, and has called out media outlets for their unethical practices in the past. Grant’s support for Prince Harry’s call for a fresh police investigation into Murdoch’s media empire highlights the importance of holding media organizations accountable for their actions.

As the conversation around media ethics and accountability continues to grow, it is crucial for individuals like Grant and Prince Harry to speak out against injustice and demand transparency from media outlets. Only by working together to expose wrongdoing and hold powerful figures accountable can we hope to create a more ethical and responsible media landscape.

  • Nasdaq futures slide, S&P 500 backs off from record as techs lose steam

US stocks faltered before the bell on Thursday, pulling back from a bid for fresh records as AI optimism waned and markets waited for more detail on President Donald Trump’s tariff plans.

S&P 500 futures (ES=F) slipped roughly 0.2%, coming off a three-day win streak that saw the benchmark index close Wednesday on the cusp of setting a new all-time high. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures (YM=F) traded broadly flat with a record still within reach.

Meanwhile, Nasdaq 100 futures (NQ=F) fell 0.5% as tech stocks struggled to regain the momentum that propelled the previous day’s gains. Nvidia (NVDA) shares tipped lower in pre-market, as fellow megacap techs Apple (AAPL) and Google parent Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) also lost ground.

Investors are still digesting Trump’s early-days policy charge, which brought an AI push that invigorated tech names but left unclear when the outlined tariffs on big trading partners — a risk for inflation and stocks — might hit. The focus is now on Trump’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos later Thursday for more insight into his “shock and awe” trade policy.

Yahoo Finance is on the ground at Davos. See the latest from the world’s business leaders here.

Shares in Amazon (AMZN) and Tesla (TSLA) edged lower after business shifts by the tech leaders in Canada, a prime tariff target for Trump. The e-commerce giant will close its warehouses in Quebec, with a loss of about 1,700 jobs, while Tesla plans hefty price hikes on all its EV models sold in Canada.

Earnings are providing a bright spot for markets, after Netflix (NFLX) blew past Wall Street expectations. GE Aerospace (GE) shares popped after the jet engine maker reported a stronger full-year profit and announced plans to raise its share buybacks and dividend. Quarterly reports from American Airlines (AAL) and Texas Instruments (TXN) are also on the docket on Thursday.

On the economic front, a reading on initial jobless claims in the past week will feed into expectations for the Federal Reserve’s path on interest rates.

    Coming soon

Stock market coverage for Thursday, January 23, 2025.

The Nasdaq futures are sliding, and the S&P 500 is backing off from its record highs as tech stocks lose steam. Investors are grappling with concerns about rising inflation, potential interest rate hikes, and a slowing economic recovery.

Tech stocks, which have been leading the market rally, are now facing pressure as investors reassess their valuations. Companies like Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft are seeing their share prices decline, dragging down the overall market.

The uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve’s next moves is also weighing on investor sentiment. The central bank is facing pressure to raise interest rates sooner than expected to combat inflation, which could dampen economic growth.

Overall, the market is experiencing a pullback after a strong rally in recent weeks. Investors are now looking for signs of stability and reassurance from corporate earnings reports and economic data.

It’s a reminder that the stock market is not a one-way street, and volatility can return at any time. Investors should be prepared for ups and downs and stay diversified in their portfolios to weather any market turbulence.

  • Team fits for six running backs set to become free agents in 2025

I don’t see the Chargers letting Dobbins walk out the door. He’s been a perfect fit in Jim Harbaugh’s run-first offense, rushing for a team-high 905 yards and nine touchdowns in his first year in Los Angeles. He missed four games with a knee injury, but this was still his healthiest season since his 2020 rookie campaign. Able to trust his body for most of the season while working behind the Chargers’ solid offensive line, Dobbins racked up 4.6 yards per carry, ninth-most in the NFL among the 27 players to log at least 175 rushing attempts in 2024. It would make sense for the Chargers to focus on building up the pass game this offseason, but it will still be paramount to retain a tackle-breaking bowling ball like Dobbins, who’ll provide a consistent rushing attack.

With the 2025 NFL season quickly approaching, several running backs are set to become free agents. Here are some potential team fits for six of the top running backs set to hit the market:

    1. Saquon Barkley – Miami Dolphins
With a need for a dynamic playmaker in the backfield, the Dolphins could pursue Barkley to complement their young quarterback and solid receiving corps.

    2. Derrick Henry – Baltimore Ravens
Henry’s bruising running style would fit perfectly in the Ravens’ run-heavy offense, providing a powerful one-two punch alongside Lamar Jackson.

    3. Dalvin Cook – Los Angeles Chargers
Cook’s dual-threat ability as a runner and receiver would be a perfect fit in the Chargers’ high-powered offense, giving Justin Herbert another weapon to utilize.

    4. Alvin Kamara – Kansas City Chiefs
Kamara’s versatility and elusiveness would make him a perfect fit in the Chiefs’ explosive offense, providing Patrick Mahomes with another weapon to exploit mismatches.

    5. Nick Chubb – San Francisco 49ers
Chubb’s physical running style would fit well in the 49ers’ run-first offense, providing a reliable option to take pressure off their young quarterback.

    6. Aaron Jones – New England Patriots
Jones’ versatility as a runner and receiver would make him a valuable asset in the Patriots’ offense, providing Bill Belichick with another weapon to scheme around.

As free agency approaches, these running backs will have plenty of suitors vying for their services, but these potential team fits could offer the best chance for success in the 2025 season.

  • UK backs local inquiries into child sexual abuse gangs after Musk stoked controversy

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s government said Thursday that it will support a series of local inquiries into cases of organized child sexual abuse in the wake of a furor largely stoked by the world’s richest man Elon Musk.

In a statement to lawmakers, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the government has also authorized what she called a “rapid audit” of the “current scale and nature of gang-based exploitation across the country” and make recommendations.

The issue of so-called “grooming gangs,” also called “rape gangs” by some, has risen up the political agenda in the U.K. after Musk recently took to his X platform highlighting the problem and condemning British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Musk criticized Starmer for not backing a national inquiry into the matter following a request from the local authority in the northern English town of Oldham, where police found girls under 18 were sexually exploited by groups of men in the 2000s and 2010s. Musk also alleged that Starmer failed to bring perpetrators to justice when he was England’s chief prosecutor between 2008 and 2013, a charge that the prime minister vigorously denied.

Because the cases in Oldham and similar ones in several other towns involved predominantly white girls abused by men largely from Pakistani backgrounds, the issue has been used by far-right activists to link child sexual abuse to immigration, and to accuse politicians of covering up the crimes out of a fear of appearing racist.

The decision to back a local inquiry in Oldham and four other areas is a shift in the government’s position. It had previously indicated that there was no need for further investigations following a string of previous inquiries, both local and national.

“I hope this is a proper investigation,” Musk said on X in response to the government’s decision.

A seven-year inquiry was held under the previous Conservative government, but many of the 20 recommendations it made in 2022 — including compensation for abuse victims — have yet to be implemented.

Cooper confirmed Thursday that the government will act on them as soon as possible, adding that “much valuable time has already been lost” since the final report was published, “causing even more trauma to many victims and survivors.”

Cooper said the government will provide 10 million pounds ($12.5 million) to support its announcement, half of which will go to the inquiries.

“As we have seen, effective local inquiries can delve into far more local detail and deliver more locally relevant answers, and change, than a lengthy nationwide inquiry can provide,” she said.

The main opposition Conservative Party said Cooper’s measures aren’t sufficient as there are around 50 areas that have suffered from grooming gangs. It also voiced worries that the local inquires won’t be able to summon witnesses, something a national inquiry would have been able to.

The UK government has announced its support for local inquiries into child sexual abuse gangs following controversial comments made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Musk sparked outrage online after suggesting that victims of child sexual abuse gangs should be held responsible for their own trauma. His remarks were widely condemned as victim-blaming and insensitive.

In response to the backlash, the UK government is backing calls for local inquiries to investigate and address the issue of child sexual abuse gangs. These inquiries will aim to uncover the extent of the problem, identify the perpetrators, and provide support for victims and their families.

The decision to launch these inquiries comes as part of a broader effort to combat child sexual abuse and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. The government is committed to working with local communities, law enforcement agencies, and support services to tackle this issue and protect vulnerable children.

By supporting these inquiries, the UK government is sending a clear message that victims of child sexual abuse gangs deserve justice and support, and that those responsible for these heinous crimes will be held accountable. It is imperative that we continue to raise awareness, advocate for victims, and take action to prevent further abuse from occurring.

  • Ange Postecoglou backs Spurs’ young stars to lead club through ‘tough spot’ | Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou has backed his young players to show the leadership required to get Tottenham through their current “tough spot” in the Premier League.

Spurs have won just once in their past six league matches and are currently 14th. Postecoglou continues to insist the club’s injury crisis is unlike any he has experienced in his career before, with Ben Davies the only member of Spurs’ sick list likely to be available for selection against Everton on Sunday. But the Australian believes his team will be stronger if they can find a way through their current adversity.

“The younger players have done brilliantly in coping with what’s been thrown at them,” Postecoglou said. “Archie [Gray], Lucas [Bergvall], Djed [Spence] … Dom [Solanke] has done an unbelievable job. These guys have embraced the challenge of us being in a tough spot, they’ve not shied away.

“They are all new in terms of the team, that’s important because at some point when we get significant returns [in players], that could lead to a stronger time. I’ve always said leadership can come in different forms, and maybe the young ones can lead us through; there’s no reason they can’t. That’s the message I’ve been giving back to them: whatever it takes and whoever stands up in these moments, don’t wait for somebody else. If you feel like it’s going to be you, then you take that moment.”

Postecoglu’s remarks hardly reflect well on Spurs’ older players, though the manager insisted it was more a case of his squad being short on experience altogether. “We don’t have a lot in that bracket to be fair,” Postecoglou said.

He went to say that he was not explicitly looking to add experience in this transfer window. “What we need right now is some reinforcements in terms of able bodies who can help us get through this period. That’s much more important than anything else right now. Every game we’ve got close to double-digit absences.”

Spurs face an Everton side at Goodison Park seven points and two places below them, and back under the control of David Moyes. Postecoglou extolled the virtues of his counterpart, another manager who has been criticised for not adjusting his approach to the game. He was also pleased that, at 61, the Scot has replaced him as the Premier League’s oldest manager.

“I’m delighted to see him back because it means I’m not the oldest in the Premier League anymore. If we can get Roy [Hodgson] off a beach somewhere I will be even happier,” said Postecoglu. “He is still at the top of his game and is a fantastic manager. I think longevity is a measure of your capabilities particularly when you think of how long he has managed in the Premier League itself and he has made an impact at the clubs he has been at.

“There is not one person, one manager who won’t go through tough times, who won’t lose his job at some point. That happens to everyone. You’ve got to have something to cling on to. What do you believe in? If you don’t [have anything] and if you’re just changing all the time because of pressures then eventually what happens is you disappear.”

Ange Postecoglou, the current manager of Celtic FC, has expressed his belief in Tottenham Hotspur’s young stars to lead the club through a ‘tough spot’. Postecoglou, who previously managed the Australian national team and Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, has been impressed by the talent and potential of Spurs’ young players.

Speaking to the media, Postecoglou said, “Tottenham have some very talented young players who have shown they can compete at the highest level. It’s always tough when a team goes through a difficult period, but I believe that these young stars have the ability and mentality to lead the club through this tough spot.”

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a challenging season so far, with inconsistent performances and results in the Premier League. However, Postecoglou’s vote of confidence in the club’s young talents will surely boost the morale of the players and fans alike.

With the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, and Japhet Tanganga leading the way, Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to turn their season around and climb up the league table. And with Ange Postecoglou’s support, the young stars at Spurs will have the belief and motivation to do just that.
