  • Dora Jar on the Viral Gracie Abrams Tour Drama: ‘Don’t Feel Bad for Me’

Obviously Gracie’s such a graceful, beautiful spirit and an open-hearted person. She’s been directing a lot of positivity my way. There’s too much to really remember. It’s just a lot.

I saw Maggie Rogers comment on your Instagram and say, “Love you, sweet legend.” So I feel like everything was worth it to get that.

I love her so much, ever since “Dog Days.” That was the first song that I loved by Maggie. She’s so special. Lots of wonderful women supporting women at this moment.

Is this going to change how you plan out the show? What are you thinking?

I want to keep it a secret, but it is going to be a different show.

Gracie Abrams Is Embracing Her Delusions

The singer-songwriter on her new album, The Secret of Us, how she ended up writing a song in a “theater kid” haze with Taylor Swift, and how she’s preparing for her own major tour.

    Gracie Abrams

Clearly, people need to familiarize themselves with your music. Can you walk me through your discography? What songs should we start with?

My first EP is 2021’s Digital Meadow. That was the one where I felt like, Oh, people are listening, this is very cool and so lucky. My favorite song off that one is “Multiply.” It’s still one I play live. My second EP is called Comfortably in Pain, which is a bit shorter, and my favorite song off that is “Lagoon.” It has the lyric: “I’m comfortably in pain / My love is a lagoon too deep to be known by you.” It’s something I really felt at that time, where I started feeling like a stranger to myself, having to all of a sudden be a little bit public. I felt unknown and known, and I didn’t know what I did to deserve the attention. I also didn’t know how to tell the story. I kind of felt I was embracing my own mystery. I put out my album a few years later in 2024, and it’s called No Way to Relax When You Are on Fire.

I saw your music described a few places as “bedroom pop.” Is that how you self-describe? Honestly, I don’t even know what that means.

No, I don’t. I don’t know what it means either, and I don’t like it. [Laughs.] I feel like all artists share the same sentiment of, what the hell is genre? Maybe bedroom pop tries to fill in that confusion by saying, I don’t know, it’s just music. But no, I’m a songwriter primarily. I write all my own songs, usually in a stairwell or somewhere that sounds echoey like a bathroom. So I’m more like a bathroom pop artist maybe, or a stairwell pop artist. But I’m also very rock and roll and I’m also very folk. I’m just a music freak. I love it all. So I try to cover as much ground as I can.

How would you describe your music to a first-time listener?

It’s a fun house and every room is different. It’s all within the same house, but you’ll find many surprises and trinkets and details the closer you look and the deeper you listen.

Hey everyone, have you been keeping up with the latest drama surrounding the viral Gracie Abrams tour? Well, one name that has been popping up a lot in the midst of it all is Dora Jar.

  • Adam Sandler Hits the Fairways With Bad Bunny in New ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Image

The price is… right? At least, it seems to be for Adam Sandler and Bad Bunny as the pair take to the fairways in the newest sneak peek at Happy Gilmore 2, which Netflix has just released. In the image, we see Sandler in full Happy getup, including that iconic Boston Bruins jersey and sneakers, taking one hell of a swing at the ball, while Bad Bunny caddies for him in the background. It’s been three decades since we last saw Happy going head to head with Christopher McDonald‘s Shooter McGavin, and the first trailer for the movie — released at Christmas — showed the two will be renewing their rivalry, but quite how remains to be seen.

Also returning from the original film is Modern Family star Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, while new additions include the likes of Travis Kelce, Eminem, Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer), Margaret Qualley (Maid), Scott Mescudi (Don’t Look Up), golf icon Jack Nicklaus, and a number of PGA tour veterans too.

And although he wasn’t featured in the teaser trailer, we know from an interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, that Ben Stiller will also be reprising his role as the sinister Hal L in a big way. “There is a good reveal in the movie having to do with Hal’s name that I won’t say,” Stiller told Collider back in November, as he offered us all another warm glass of shut the hell up.

    What Was ‘Happy Gilmore’ About?

Adam Sandler and Bad Bunny on the golf course in Happy Gilmore 2
    Image via Netflix

The original Happy Gilmore movie is considered peak Sander. In his 90s prime of films many of us discovered on VHS at Blockbuster (right, guys?), Happy Gilmore follows the character of the same name (following the style of other Sandler movies such as Billy Madison and Little Nicky). Happy is a wannabe ice hockey player with the temper of a bulldog on heat. He soon figures out just how good he is at golf (with a little finessing from the one-handed former golf pro Chubbs, played by the late great Carl Weathers) and soon discovers that he can use that talent to help save his grandmother’s home. With both Stiller and McDonald set to reprise their roles, Happy’s greatest rivals will be returning, so it will be interesting to see what the conflict is nearly 30 years later.

The first Happy Gilmore movie is currently available to stream for free on Tubi. Stay with Collider for the latest updates on Happy Gilmore 2.

Adam Sandler and Bad Bunny were spotted hitting the fairways together in a new image from the upcoming film “Happy Gilmore 2.” The comedy sequel sees Sandler reprising his role as the lovable yet temperamental hockey player turned golfer, Happy Gilmore.

In the image, Sandler and Bad Bunny are seen sporting golf attire as they share a laugh on the green. The unlikely duo’s on-screen chemistry is sure to bring plenty of laughs and surprises to fans of the original film.

Fans of the original “Happy Gilmore” can look forward to more outrageous golf antics, hilarious one-liners, and memorable moments in the highly anticipated sequel. Stay tuned for more updates on “Happy Gilmore 2” as production continues.

  • Adam Sandler and Bad Bunny Hit the Links in Netflix’s New Look at ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

Adam Sandler has some help on the golf course in Netflix’s newly released look at its upcoming comedy sequel Happy Gilmore 2.

The streaming service shared a new sneak-peek image from the forthcoming film on Thursday, coinciding with the company sharing its plans for movie, TV and game projects in the coming year. In director Kyle Newacheck’s sequel, Sandler reprises his role as the titular unlikely golf sensation that he originated in Universal’s 1996 film Happy Gilmore. Filming for the project wrapped last month.

    More from The Hollywood Reporter

As seen in the new still below, Sandler is ready to take one of his character’s signature golf swings while getting caddy assistance from Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, also known as singer Bad Bunny. Another image, which is above, shows Sandler facing off with longtime rival Shooter McGavin, with actor Christopher McDonald reprising his role from the initial movie.

A premise has not yet been released for the film, which Netflix announced Thursday is set to debut later this year. (Sandler previously hinted at a possible summer release.) Other castmembers for Happy Gilmore 2 include Julie Bowen, Margaret Qualley, Travis Kelce, Conor Sherry, Ethan Cutowsky, Maxwell Jacob Friedman and Philip Fine Schneider. Dennis Dugan, who directed the original film and executive produces the sequel, will have a role in the new movie as well.

Returning to produce the sequel are Sandler, Tim Herlihy, Robert Simonds and Jack Giarraputo. Sandler and Herlihy wrote the screenplay for Happy Gilmore 2 after having penned the original film’s script.

During an interview with the Dan Patrick Show that aired last month, Sandler admitted to feeling pressure to live up to the first film.

“It’s on your mind,” the star said at the time. “We’ve got a lot of good stuff, and we just want to make sure that it all comes together and keeps it going from start to finish, and that’s the goal. We’ll see. We’re definitely nervous, but we feel some sort of confidence.”

  • Trump pardoned a lot of bad apples. Now he and Republicans own the barrelful

Politics often entails angles and illusion, dodges and diversions. Navigating the space between hope and reality is one of its requisite skills. But sometimes events demand a straightforward response.

    To wit:

Do you think it’s OK to attack a police officer by plunging a stun gun multiple times into his neck?

How about using a riot shield to smash a police officer into a metal door frame, leaving him bruised and bloodied?

Any problem with someone who spends more than an hour assaulting law enforcement officers with pepper spray, a metal crutch and wooden and metal poles?

President Trump seems just fine with the above, a tiny fraction of the crime spree committed when a swarm of rioters overran the Capitol in a violent bid to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The above-mentioned perpetrators — and many more like them — were among the roughly 1,500 criminal defendants whom Trump pardoned just hours after taking office.

How’s that for Making America Safe Again, as was promised throughout his White House bid?

Going forth, any candidate who campaigns under the banner of Trump’s Republican Party — which has long styled itself as the party of law and order and “backing the blue” — should be made to reconcile that asserted stance with the president’s unholy act.

And, please, none of this yeah-but-what-about in regard to President Biden’s misguided use of his pardoning powers before he exited the Oval Office. None of the pardoned Biden family members were, to give but one example, caught stealing pepper spray from police, distributing it to assailants and attacking officers as part of a “war” on the government.

If you don’t see a difference, you need more help than your friendly political columnist can provide.

Read more: Column: Why’s it so hard to do the right thing and honor the true heroes of Jan. 6?

Trump’s fun-house version of justice may not matter a whit to voters, or alter even slightly their perceptions of the two major parties.

“If American campaigns were logical, this would be a huge problem for Republicans,” said Jack Pitney, a politics professor at Claremont McKenna College, who worked for the national GOP during the George H.W. Bush administration.

“But campaigns aren’t logical,” he said. “When Republican candidates talk about law and order, they’re talking about street crime, the things that people encounter every day. They simply put things such as the attack on the Capitol in a separate box.”

A lot of people voted for Trump’s return to the White House “knowing it was going to be messy,” as Rob Stutzman, a GOP strategist and no fan of the president, put it. That recognition came baked into their decision, Stutzman said, and “they’re going to tolerate some of the nutball stuff” if the president delivers on promises such as securing America’s borders.

In fairness, it should be noted there were some post-pardon voices of Republican dissent, including GOP senators who criticized the extent of Trump’s action. Nothing, however, that amounted to a major outcry or serious Republican backlash.

House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters it was time to move forward and not look back, a mantra widely echoed in party ranks — except, of course, over those pardons that Biden issued.

Surveys, including one conducted right after Trump’s amnesty order, showed roughly 60% of those polled were opposed to pardoning Jan. 6 offenders. Which means a not-unsubstantial number of Americans have no problem turning loose cop-beaters and insurrectionists, presumably so long as Trump manages to bring down the price of eggs, bacon and gasoline.

Let’s wait and see. We’re not even two weeks into the Trump administration and there are nearly 650 days to the 2026 midterm election, the next chance voters nationwide will have to weigh in on the direction of the country and the president’s performance.

When it comes to those sprung Jan. 6 jailbirds, “we know what’s going to happen,” said Bill Carrick, a Democratic campaign strategist. “Bad actors got out and they’re going to do something bad.”

In fact, just last weekend a Capitol rioter pardoned by Trump was killed by an Indiana sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop after he ended up in an altercation with the officer.

Democrats will be poised “to highlight” those sorts of cases, Carrick said, imagining the script for a campaign ad that practically writes itself: “He was sentenced to X number of years. Trump let him out of jail, and look what he did.”

Read more: Trump and Biden add to long, strange history of presidential pardons

The country crossed a dubious threshold on Nov. 5 when, as Pitney observed, “a convicted felon who incited a violent insurrection against the government of the United States [was] elected president.”

    And here we are.

But that insult to our ideals is no reason to try to stuff the criminality of Jan. 6 down a memory hole, or “get over it,” as some Trump backers sneeringly suggest.

We can’t put those lawbreakers back behind bars. But their apologists and political patrons can be held to account when it comes time to vote again. They should be. It’s necessary to help preserve and protect our country.

    And make America safe again.

This story originally appeared in Los Angeles Times.

On January 19, 2021, in his final hours as President of the United States, Donald Trump issued a slew of pardons to numerous individuals, many of whom were convicted of or implicated in crimes ranging from corruption to fraud to violence. Among those pardoned were several of Trump’s close associates, including his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his longtime adviser Roger Stone.

These pardons have sparked outrage and condemnation from critics, who argue that Trump is abusing his power to protect his allies and himself from accountability. By pardoning these “bad apples,” Trump has effectively signaled that he condones their actions and is willing to shield them from the consequences of their wrongdoing.

But the ramifications of these pardons extend beyond just Trump and his inner circle. They also reflect poorly on the Republican Party as a whole, as many GOP lawmakers have remained silent or even voiced support for Trump’s pardons. By failing to hold Trump accountable for his actions and enabling his abuses of power, Republicans have effectively taken ownership of the “barrelful” of bad apples that Trump has pardoned.

In the eyes of many Americans, Trump and the Republicans who have stood by him are complicit in the corruption and lawlessness that have defined his presidency. Moving forward, it will be up to voters to hold them accountable and demand a higher standard of ethics and integrity from their leaders. The barrelful of bad apples may have been pardoned, but the stench of corruption and cronyism will linger for years to come.

  • Good news in math, bad news in reading. What to know about the latest NAEP scores : NPR

Almost five years have passed since COVID-19 first disrupted America’s schools, and new data, known as the Nation’s Report Card, offers cause for hope — and concern.

The good news: In math, many students have made up at least some of the academic ground they lost during the pandemic.

The bad news: In both reading and math, most fourth- and eighth-graders in 2024 still performed below pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

What’s more, while these achievement declines were exacerbated by the pandemic, they appear to have begun even before COVID-19, raising important questions about why students are still struggling and what educators and policymakers can do about it.

The news arrives as the nation’s public schools have largely spent the $190 billion in federal emergency funding they received from Congress to help pay for, among other things, research-backed interventions, including summer school and tutoring. Previous research suggests that money did lead to modest academic gains, though this new data shows students still have a long way to go.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which provides data for the Nation’s Report Card, is mandated by Congress and is the largest nationally representative test of student learning. NAEP tests were first administered in 1969. Today, the assessments in math and reading are given every two years to a broad sample of students in fourth and eighth grades.

Students held steady in math or even made up ground

In fourth grade, the average math score ticked up slightly compared with 2022, ending a pandemic slide. In fact, white, Black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students all showed modest gains, on average.

“In fourth grade, it seems that, regardless of where students were, they were improving,” says Lisa Ashe, a math consultant with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and a member of the National Assessment Governing Board, which sets NAEP policy.

That said, fourth-grade math scores still remained below pre-pandemic 2019 levels, with one exception: Alabama was the only state where fourth-graders’ average math scores surpassed 2019 scores. (In 2022, lawmakers there passed a law aimed at improving math proficiency for all K-5 students in the state.)

But COVID-19 isn’t all to blame. A longer view of fourth-graders’ math scores — and student achievement more broadly — shows those scores began stagnating and even declining before the pandemic. Math scores peaked around 2013. Multiple education researchers tell NPR they aren’t sure why.

“That is the multitrillion-dollar question,” says Dan Goldhaber, an education researcher at the University of Washington who has studied pandemic learning loss.

One thing we know is that fourth-grade math performance improved around the same time the old federal education law known as No Child Left Behind (signed in 2002) enforced strict new accountability requirements. When those requirements were phased out (beginning in 2012) and ultimately replaced (in 2015), math performance, especially among lower-performers, fell.

That’s just one possible explanation for the slowdown that the pandemic worsened. Goldhaber suggests learning could also have been set back by the Great Recession, by kids’ increased access to smartphones and tablets or by the ripple effects of a decline in kids reading for fun. (Since 2017, fewer and fewer students have reported to NAEP that they enjoy reading.)

“It’s important to understand what caused that earlier stagnation if we’re going to get out of the mire of the pandemic,” Goldhaber says.

For eighth-graders, math scores held steady in 2024 compared with 2022. But as with fourth-graders, they remained below pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

What’s more, the Nation’s Report Card highlights some worrying divergence happening within those scores. The highest-performing eighth-graders improved in math compared with 2022, but the lowest-performing students moved in the opposite direction, losing ground in 2024.

“That actually caused alarm,” Ashe says of the widening achievement gap. “We need to meet the needs of these students that are in the lower percentiles, because something that we’re doing is not working for those students.”

Overall, 39% of fourth-graders and 28% of eighth-graders scored at or above NAEP’s standard for proficiency in math. That’s a little better than in 2022.

The NAEP report warns against comparing these results to state-reported numbers, as “the NAEP standard for proficiency represents competency over challenging subject matter, a standard that exceeds most states’ standards for proficient or grade-level achievement.”

Reading: The bad news got worse

The results in reading weren’t nearly as hopeful as they were in math:

Fourth-graders continued to lose ground in 2024, with reading scores slightly lower, on average, than they were in 2022 and much lower than they were in 2019.

In 2019, 35% of fourth-graders scored at or above the test’s reading proficiency standard.

That figure dropped to 33% in 2022 and, further, to 31%, in 2024.

As with math, these declines aren’t entirely the fault of the pandemic. Fourth-grade reading scores began falling years earlier, around 2015.

Only one state, Louisiana, saw its 2024 fourth-grade reading scores surpass 2019 scores.

It’s worth remembering: This current round of fourth-graders, from the 2023-2024 school year, were in kindergarten when the pandemic first closed schools, and many spent some or all of first grade learning remotely.

Eighth-graders’ 2024 reading scores also dropped compared with 2022, with just 30% of students performing at or above NAEP’s proficient standard.

NAEP classifies students at one of three skill levels: advanced, proficient or the lowest, basic. According to the results, the share of eighth-graders reading below NAEP’s basic standard “was the largest in the assessment’s history.”

Not only that, but the worst-performing readers in 2024 scored “lower than our lower performers did 30 years ago for fourth and eighth grade. That’s how low these scores historically have dropped,” says Peggy Carr, commissioner for the National Center for Education Statistics.

Not one state improved its eighth-grade reading scores compared with 2022, let alone 2019.

The connection between poverty and performance

This year’s NAEP results include a new, more precise index for determining students’ socioeconomic status (SES), and the results show, in stark detail, what teachers and researchers have long understood: That poverty and performance are deeply connected.

For example, the overwhelming majority (77%) of fourth-grade students in the highest SES category — the wealthiest kids — performed above the national average in reading.

Of the fourth-graders in the lowest SES category, though, the results are nearly flipped, with just 34% performing above the national average.

The results in math performance were similarly disparate.

On a positive note, while many big-city districts made important gains in fourth-grade math with their economically disadvantaged students, a handful of districts did exceptionally well, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina, Guilford County Schools (also in North Carolina), Baltimore City Public Schools and the San Diego Unified School District.

Missing school is getting in the way of learning

When students took the latest NAEP assessments, in early 2024, they were asked how many days they had been absent the previous month. The results are slightly encouraging: A smaller percentage of fourth- and eighth-graders reported missing five or more days of school in the past month compared with 2022.

But across the board, lower-performing students were more likely to report missing five or more days of school in the previous month, compared with higher-performing students.

Simply put, missing school means missing learning.

When students miss 10% or more of a school year, they’re considered “chronically absent,” and as NPR has previously reported, the rates of chronic absenteeism doubled during the pandemic.

The link that NAEP shows between missing school and lower academic achievement doesn’t surprise Hedy Chang, head of Attendance Works, an organization devoted to fighting chronic absenteeism. “It’s not just affecting academics,” she says of absenteeism. “It’s affecting social development and executive functioning.”

To continue on the path of improving attendance and in turn student achievement, Chang suggests that districts look at the students who are missing the most school and the hurdles they’re facing.

“You might not be able to take it all, tackle it all, at once,” Chang says. “You might have to tackle it in bits and pieces, either by barrier or by grade or by this subset of schools.”

She says making sure all students are going to school could go a long way in bolstering student achievement.

The latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores have been released, and the results show some promising trends in math performance but concerning trends in reading proficiency.

In math, the scores have shown improvement across various grade levels, with more students demonstrating proficiency in key mathematical concepts. This is a positive sign that efforts to improve math education and instruction are paying off, and that students are gaining a better understanding of math skills.

However, the news is not as positive when it comes to reading. The scores have shown a decline in reading proficiency, with a smaller percentage of students demonstrating mastery of reading comprehension skills. This trend is worrisome and highlights the ongoing challenges in promoting literacy and reading skills among students.

It is important for educators, policymakers, and parents to take note of these results and continue to prioritize both math and reading education in order to ensure that all students have the necessary skills to succeed academically and in their future endeavors. By addressing the areas of weakness highlighted in the NAEP scores, we can work towards improving overall student achievement and closing the achievement gap in these crucial subject areas.

  • Bad News Kirill Kaprizov Injury Update Incoming from MN Wild

    Kirill Kaprizov - Minnesota Wild

Hello friends, I wish I could gather you here today for some good news on the Minnesota Wild, who hope to extend their win streak to two games on Tuesday night vs the Toronto Maple Leafs. Unfortunately, as you knew when you clicked to get here, that is not the case. Unfortunately, it appears Kirill Kaprizov has missed practice yet again.

Minnesota Wild have bad news injury update on Kirill Kaprizov

At 11 AM on Tuesday, Guerin met with media, where he gave an injury update on Kaprizov that we were all dreading. Prior to Guerin’s announcement, The Athletic’s Michael Russo got the jist of the update on Kaprizov out first, reporting that the 27-year-old superstar did not practice today.

He also confirmed that the ailment in question was the same lower body injury Kirill Kaprizov missed 12 games between December and January because of. And then, Guerin confirmed the worst part… that the injury requires surgery and Kaprizov will be out week-to-week.

Kirill Kaprizov missed practice Tuesday and, according to multiple league sources, there have been discussions between Kaprizov, Minnesota Wild management and doctors over the past few days over whether Kaprizov should undergo surgery this week for a lower-body injury that has been ailing him since mid-December.

What is next for MN Wild and Kaprizov?

Thankfully, this injury will not end Kaprizov’s season. As noted earlier, the injury is week-to-week, not month-to-month. That begs to question why he did Kirill not elect for this surgery sooner? Could they have fixed this injury for good, when it first happened and what changed that has them now opting for surgery? I’m guessing some of the answers to those questions will start trickling in over the coming days.

Prior to his injury, Kirill Kaprizov held the best odds in the NHL for 2024-25 MVP (Hart). In 37 games this season he has collected 52 points (23 goals, 29 assists). He did not score a goal in any of the three games after he returned to the lineup. Without a doubt, this is devastating news for a Minnesota Wild team that has lost five of its last seven and went 1-3-0 even with Kirill the Thrill in the lineup.

Minnesota Wild fans brace yourselves, as an update on Kirill Kaprizov’s injury status is set to be released soon. The star forward suffered a lower-body injury during a recent game and had to leave the ice early.

Speculation is swirling about the severity of the injury and how long Kaprizov may be sidelined. The team has been tight-lipped about the details, leaving fans anxious for more information.

Stay tuned for the latest updates on Kirill Kaprizov’s injury and how it will impact the Minnesota Wild’s season. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for one of the team’s most dynamic players. #MNWild #KirillKaprizov #InjuryUpdate
