Trail Blazers’ defense befuddles Banchero in dominant win at Magic
The Portland Trail Blazers won their third consecutive game for only the second time this season by winning 101-79 at the Orlando Magic on Thursday night.
The Blazers put forth their most dominant defensive effort of the season.
“Thought it was a masterpiece,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups told reporters. “I really did. We locked in. They missed a lot of shots, but I thought it was because of what we did. I thought we sped them up a little bit.”
The numbers back up Billups’ assessment.
Portland held the Magic to 34.2% shooting (lowest against the Blazers this season), 24% three-point shooting (second lowest), 17 assists (tied for second fewest) and forced 22 turnovers (fourth most). Portland blocked 12 shots (tied for the most) and had 14 steals (tied for second most).
The 79 points allowed were far below the previous low of 98 scored by Houston and Minnesota in losses to the Blazers.
Granted, the Magic were missing guard Jalen Suggs and center Moritz Wagner, who combined for 29.3 points per game. Also, star forwards Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner were on minute restrictions. Wagner scored 20 points on 9-of-19 shooting in 24 minutes. But Banchero, who has played just 12 games this season, was forced into shooting just 1 of 14 for eight points. In five previous games since his return, Banchero averaged 22.2 points per game.
“We just wanted to make (Banchero) earn everything that he got tonight, along with everybody else,” Billups said.
Regardless of the Magic’s injury situation, this was a rare dominant defensive showing by the Blazers.
“So many guys were amazing on that side of the ball,” Billups said.
Offensively, Anfernee Simons led the Blazers with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Toumani Camara returned from an illness to score 16 points with six rebounds. Robert Williams III started at center and had eight points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.
“Rob was incredible,” Billups said.
Billups also credited Orlando’s defense for disrupting the Blazers’ offense. Blazers. The Magic entered the game ranked fourth in defensive rating (107.9).

“They made it really hard for us, too,” Billups said. “Because they are an elite defensive team every night.”
That was certainly the case in the first half.
The Blazers, who committed just eight turnovers during Tuesday’s win at the Miami Heat, had six in the first quarter at the Magic. Fortunately for the Blazers, Orlando committed nine while winning an eye-sore of a quarter, 21-17.
The Blazers trailed 31-30 in the second quarter before going on a 17-8 run to lead 47-39 at halftime.
Simons scored 11 to lead the Blazers, who shot 5 of 10 from three-point range in the quarter.
The Blazers dominated the second half by shooting 59.5% from the field and holding the Magic to 31.8% shooting.
Portland produced 58 points in the paint compared to 30 for the Magic.
“We just fought the whole game,” Williams told reporters.
WHAT IT MEANS
The Blazers (16-28) have won back-to-back road games for the first time this season. They defeated the Heat 116-107 on Tuesday after winning 113-102 Sunday over the Bulls at home.
The last time the Blazers won three consecutive games came from Nov. 12 through Nov. 17 when they defeated Minnesota twice and Atlanta.
The Blazers should have a strong chance of picking up their fourth consecutive victory Friday night at the Charlotte Hornets (11-29), a team also hit hard by injuries.
The struggling Magic (23-23), eighth in the Eastern Conference, have lost five consecutive games and eight of their last 10. They were 17-9 on Dec. 8.

SCOOT HENDERSON FOULS OUT
Henderson, who had been on one of the best stretches of his career, couldn’t get rolling against the Magic due to early and frequent foul trouble. He picked up two in the first quarter, two in the second quarter, one in the third and fouled out with 6:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. Henderson scored just four points with two assists in 16 minutes.
LINEUP
Blazers coach Chauncey Billups started Simons, Camara, Deni Avdija, Jerami Grant and Williams.
Center Deandre Ayton sat out with right knee soreness.
Coming off the bench were Henderson and Sharpe, who scored seven points with four rebounds and four turnovers.
JABARI WALKER
Blazers forward Jabari Walker played extended minutes (19) with Ayton and rookie center Donovan Clingan out.
Walker came through on defense with six steals (five in the first half) to go along with two points and four rebounds.
“Thought Jabari was incredible in that first half,” Billups said. “Just his hands. He was handsy. He was physical.”
NEXT UP
The Blazers end their trip with a 4 p.m. game Friday at the Charlotte Hornets (11-29).

In a dominant display of defensive prowess, the Portland Trail Blazers stifled Paolo Banchero and the Orlando Magic in a commanding victory. The Trail Blazers’ defense was relentless, causing turnovers, contesting shots, and disrupting the Magic’s offensive flow throughout the game.Banchero, a highly touted rookie for the Magic, found himself unable to find any rhythm against the suffocating defense of the Trail Blazers. He was hounded by multiple defenders, forced into difficult shots, and turned the ball over multiple times under the pressure.
The Trail Blazers’ defensive effort was led by their veteran players, who set the tone with their intensity and communication on the court. Their ability to switch, rotate, and help each other on defense was a sight to behold, leaving the Magic struggling to generate any offense.
As a result of their stellar defensive performance, the Trail Blazers were able to cruise to a comfortable victory, showcasing their potential as a formidable defensive team in the league. With this win, they have proven that they can compete with the best teams in the NBA and are a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the floor.

Magic’s Paolo Banchero Talks Pickup Games with Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard at Duke | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero reminisced Friday on X about playing pickup basketball at Duke with Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard.
“We used to get it in at the indoor football field too,” Banchero wrote on X.
Former Duke standout Trevor Keels, who now plays for the G League’s Iowa Wolves, chimed in:
The players were responding to a recent clip of Leonard talking about how he used to play with the Blue Devils basketball team during his time at Duke.
Leonard said he would be best known in his hometown in Alabama not for his work as a quarterback but for his previous reputation as a basketball player.
“I like to think that I could [walk on at Duke],” Leonard said in a recent clip shared by Robert Griffin III. “I didn’t necessarily have the handles, though. Because to have handles, you’ve got to be in the gym, all day, every day.
“My class, when I got there in the summer, I was with Paolo Banchero and them. So we used to go Cameron, late at night, and hoop. Which is hope. So I was always trying to sneak in there, and play with them boys, and see if I could really prove myself.”
Leonard continued: “That’s one of my biggest regrets. I wish I would’ve hit Coach K up my freshman year.”
When asked if he had ever scored on Banchero, Leonard answered: “Paolo’s different. No, I would hold my own, I’ll put it that way. I genuinely think I would have held my own. But yeah, I miss hoops.”
While Banchero was playing his way into becoming the first pick of the 2022 NBA Draft during his single season at Duke, Leonard was mainly serving as a backup to Gunnar Holmberg.
He served two seasons as the team’s primary starter before entering the transfer portal following the departure of Mike Elko at the end of the 2023 season.
Leonard and the Fighting Irish are now preparing to play Ohio State in the national championship game. Backup quarterback Steve Angeli briefly took over as Leonard went through concussion protocol during the team’s semifinal win over Penn State, but Leonard is expected to return Monday for Notre Dame’s title bid.
In a recent pickup game at Duke University, Magic’s Paolo Banchero and Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard faced off on the court, showcasing their skills and competitive spirit. Both players are highly touted prospects in college basketball, and their matchup drew a lot of attention from fans and scouts alike.Banchero, a versatile forward with a smooth shooting touch and strong defensive abilities, showed off his offensive prowess in the game, scoring at will and making plays for his teammates. Leonard, a sharpshooting guard with deep range and a quick release, matched Banchero shot for shot and displayed his ability to create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.
The intense competition between Banchero and Leonard was a sight to behold, as both players pushed each other to their limits and left it all on the court. The pickup game served as a preview of what fans can expect to see from these two talented players in the upcoming college basketball season.
Stay tuned for more updates on Paolo Banchero, Riley Leonard, and other top college basketball prospects as they continue to impress on the court and make their mark in the world of basketball.

Paolo Banchero flexes basketball court in picturesque mansion bought with Kevin Durant’s advice
Paolo Banchero flexed his in-house basketball court to his fans. The Orlando Magic star appeared via ESPN’s “Andscape” with Marc J. Spears, where he revealed that he bought his Orlando mansion after advice from Kevin Durant.
He said that he was once hanging out with the Suns superstar at his Los Angeles mansion and when the two-time NBA champion asked about the Magic star’s home he was taken aback.
“I told KD I was living in a little condo downtown and he just looked at me like WHAT??” Banchero said.
•
The Suns star then advised the former first overall pick that he should live as the face of the franchise.
“You’re the face of the franchise, you got to live like it.”
The Magic star revealed that KD’s advice changed his outlook on the way he lived and sent him on a house hunt in his second year in the league. He found a house at the end of the year and moved in it the following summer.
After that revelation, Banchero took his fans on a tour of his in-house basketball court.
“This is why I got the house,” he said while showing off the court.
The Magic’s star’s in-house basketball court is a full 94-foot NBA regulation court with his brand’s logo at the center and “Banchero Court” inscribed on the sidelines. He also talked about his injury and revealed that he hadn’t spent much time on his in-house court because of it.
Paolo Banchero talks about his injury and his return to the court
Paolo Banchero is one of the best players in the league with incredible potential to become a superstar. He was single-handedly carrying the Magic when the season started. However, he suffered an oblique tear on Oct. 30 and was sidelined for more than two months.
During his appearance on ESPN’s show, the 2024 All-Star talked about the time he spent on the sidelines.
“Yeah, those two months away were tough, but I think I did a really good job of just keeping my spirits high throughout — whether it was just being around the team, being around my family, friends, and keeping myself motivated with the work I was doing to get back onto the court.”
He returned to action on Jan. 10 against the Milwaukee Bucks where he scored 34 points in a disappointing 109-106 loss. However, he has been on an upward trajectory ever since. He is averaging 27.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game on 49.3% field goal shooting percentage.

Paolo Banchero, the highly-touted basketball prospect and future NBA star, has been making waves both on and off the court. Recently, Banchero shared photos on social media of his newly purchased mansion, complete with a state-of-the-art basketball court that would make any basketball fan envious. But what’s even more impressive is the backstory behind Banchero’s luxurious purchase. It turns out that Banchero sought advice from none other than NBA superstar Kevin Durant before making the big investment. Durant, who is known for his savvy business acumen, reportedly gave Banchero some valuable tips on real estate and investing.
And it seems that Banchero took Durant’s advice to heart, as he now proudly shows off his stunning mansion and basketball court to his fans. The court features top-of-the-line equipment, including a custom-made hoop and hardwood flooring that rivals any professional arena.
With his combination of talent on the court and business acumen off the court, it’s clear that Banchero is destined for greatness. And with Durant in his corner, the sky’s the limit for this young basketball phenom.

Injury Notes: Leonard, Suns, Green, Harris, Banchero
Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard will not play on Friday against Golden State and he will not travel with the team for its upcoming three-game road trip, writes Broderick Turner of The Los Angeles Times (subscriber link). Leonard has yet to play this season as he recovers from a right knee injury.
However, the two-time Finals MVP continues to make progress — he went through a 5-on-5 practice on Thursday and he will practice with the G League’s San Diego Clippers while the NBA club is out of town.
“Making sure he’s doing everything so this doesn’t occur again so we can kind of monitor the fluid and see how it’s working,” head coach Tyronn Lue said. “So far it’s been really good and we just want to continue to keep progressing.”
For what it’s worth, Leonard released a vague teaser video (via Twitter) on Friday saying he’ll be back “pretty soon.”
Here are a few more injury notes from around the NBA:
- The Suns will be without All-Star guard Devin Booker for the fourth straight game on Friday when Phoenix faces Dallas, per Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic. Booker is recovering from a left groin strain. Grayson Allen (concussion protocol) and Bol Bol (left knee contusion) will also be sidelined for the Suns.
- After previously being listed as questionable, Warriors forward/center Draymond Green has been downgraded to doubtful ahead of Friday’s matchup with the Clippers, tweets Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN. An eight-time All-Defensive member, Green is dealing with a contusion on the left side of his lower back.
- Magic guard Gary Harris may suit up on Friday vs. New York after missing the past 13 games with a left hamstring strain. He’s listed as probable, according to Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel (Twitter links), who notes that while Paolo Banchero is still out, his injury designation has changed from torn right oblique to “return to competition reconditioning.” Banchero, who hasn’t played since Oct. 30, has been ramping up his on-court activities, but he’s not doing contact work yet.
Injury Notes: Leonard, Suns, Green, Harris, Banchero– Kawhi Leonard continues to be rehabbing from his ACL injury and is expected to miss the entire 2021-2022 NBA season. The LA Clippers star is taking his time with his recovery to ensure he is fully healed before returning to the court.
– The Phoenix Suns have been dealing with a rash of injuries recently, with both Chris Paul and Devin Booker missing time due to various ailments. The team is hopeful that both stars will be back on the court soon, but their absence has been felt in their recent games.
– Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors is dealing with a back injury that has kept him out of action for several games. The team is being cautious with Green’s recovery, as they want him to be fully healthy before returning to the lineup.
– Tobias Harris of the Philadelphia 76ers has been dealing with a knee injury that has limited his playing time recently. The team is monitoring his progress closely and is hopeful that he will be back on the court soon.
– Duke freshman Paolo Banchero suffered a sprained ankle in a recent game and is expected to miss some time as he recovers. Banchero, one of the top prospects in college basketball, is being evaluated by the team’s medical staff to determine the extent of his injury and the timeline for his return.
