Outer Banks organization works to bring more awareness to homelessness
KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — Amy Reed knows first hand what it’s like to experience homelessness.
“It was hard. It was no more than a month. I think it was four days, technically, until I got the courage up to make the call to come here.”” said Reed.
Here is “Room In The Inn.” The only homeless shelter in Dare County. Some people might not think homelessness impacts the Outer Banks, but president and CEO Shari Fiveash says it’s does.

“I can say that I vacationed here 30 years and had no idea. You just don’t see them. But there’s tough things going on here,” said Fiveash.
The organization has been serving those in need since 2009. They provide a number of services year-round including: housing, clothes, meals, helping people find jobs and much more. The 2023-2024 season saw the organization provide 1,573 room nights and 5,787 meals.
“We try and get everybody employed that we can so that they’re back being a contributing part of society. That’s a big goal for us,” said Fiveash.

Moving forward though, the organization is aiming to bring more awareness to homelessness in the Outer Banks and build more relationships with local organizations that benefit all in need.
“We’ve got 21 churches that help us. The county does give us $25,000 a year, and we’re thankful for that. A lot of the fishing tournaments give back a lot, and there’s a lot of other organizations. It’s a matter of awareness and I think we’ve become a whole lot more aware over the last year. It’s a matter of finding those folks that can help you grow and because you can’t afford to pay them, but they enjoy the giving back,” said Fiveash.
The shelter itself is open from November to April, which is a big boost for the off-season, but “Room In The Inn” remains committed to serving the people experiencing homeless all year-long to help get them back on their feet.
And for anyone that might be falling on hard times, it’s okay to ask for help. Amy knows first hand that we all need it at some point in time.

“I was able to start over. I was able to get back on my feet. Come in and give us a try, because it’s like the ones we have now, it’s a good start,” said Reed.
Amy doesn’t have to worry about not having a roof over here head anymore. She’s also now employed at “Room In The Inn,” along with working at a restaurant in the Outer Banks, being in the service industry is something she’s done her entire life.

‘Outer Banks’ Is The Sexiest Show Of The 2020s — And I Can Prove It
When Outer Banks first premiered on Netflix in April 2020, it was the perfect COVID binge. While everyone was locked inside their houses, viewers found solace in watching a rag-tag group of teens embark on an action-packed treasure hunt, set against the warm-toned backdrop of the Outer Banks. But, beyond that, this adventure series has cemented itself as one of the sexiest shows of the 2020s, and it doesn’t even need to show any nudity to achieve that!
Chase Stokes, who plays John Booker Routledge (better known as John B), became every girl’s dream guy, and Madelyn Cline, who plays Sarah Cameron, filled every man’s fantasy after their characters, despite being from different social castes (John B, a Pogue, and Sarah, a Kook), struck up an unlikely, but steamy romance in Season 1, making for their own modern-day Romeo & Juliet story.
As the seasons went on, the world learned to fall in love with each Pogue for different reasons. Pope Heyward (played by Jonathan “JD” Daviss) is smart and awkward, but relentless in protecting his family’s legacy. JJ Maybank (played by Rudy Pankow) was the bad boy who made rash decisions that were oftentimes detrimental to the Pogues, yet he was broken, tortured, and sensitive underneath his tough exterior. Kiara Carrera (played by Madison Bailey), while raised a Kook, is a free-spirited Pogue who would do anything for her friends. And Cleo (played by Carlacia Grant), well, she’s just an all-around badass!
Heck, even the show’s villain Rafe Cameron (played by the dreamy Drew Starkey) has layers to him that would be interesting to explore.
Photo: Netflix While each character is different from the next in terms of personality, they each have one thing in common: they’re all hot as hell!
Do they shower? Rarely. Are they wearing clothes? Barely. Somehow, it never seems to get cold in the Outer Banks as these scantily clad gals are always dressed in bikinis or crop tops and Daisy Dukes, which, more often than not, end up covered in dirt. And it’s always a good day when we get a shirtless scene from the three leading men, who typically opt for a day of surfing when they’re not fending off treasure-hungry bad guys or searching for gold in every corner of the planet.
Photo: Everett Collection But unlike most teen dramas — and other steamy Netflix staples like Bridgerton — Outer Banks strays away from explicit sex scenes (where would they even find the time?!). At this point in the series, there are three main couples: John B and Sarah, Pope and Cleo, and Kie and JJ, though it should be noted that JJ was fatally stabbed at the end of Season 4. I’m still mad about that one, but I digress.
While passion is certainly in the air and spicy makeout sessions are prevalent among the young love birds, sex has only ever been implied. Whether it’s John B and Sarah sneakily putting a seashell warning on their bedroom doorknob over at Poguelandia, or JJ and Kie covering up the window to the hyperbolic chamber they’re being held in after a diving incident gone wrong, there’s no doubt these young adults are getting it on. After all, we learn that Sarah is pregnant in Season 4 — and that Poguelette had to come from somewhere!
Photo: Netflix Despite the lack of sex scenes, Outer Banks is still one of the hottest shows to come out of this decade — which, might I remind you, has reached its halfway point. The actors are gorgeous, their wardrobe leaves little to the imagination, and, if we’re getting on a deeper level, there’s nothing more attractive than undying loyalty to one’s friends. Moreover, each couple has successfully held a chokehold on viewers who have watched their journeys from day one, which makes it all the more gut-wrenching when something bad happens to them.
Here’s hoping that the fifth and final season of Outer Banks features more swoon-worthy scenes, skimpy outfits, and some well-deserved revenge for JJ’s heartbreaking death.
The first four seasons of Outer Banks are currently streaming Netflix.
Outer Banks has taken the world by storm with its captivating storyline, beautiful scenery, and, let’s be honest, incredibly attractive cast. But what really sets this show apart from the rest is its undeniable sex appeal. From the sun-kissed beaches to the steamy love triangles, Outer Banks oozes with sensuality in every scene. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats and craving more.
But don’t just take my word for it – the numbers speak for themselves. Since its debut in 2020, Outer Banks has amassed a huge following of fans who can’t get enough of its tantalizing mix of action, drama, and, of course, romance.
So if you’re looking for a show that will leave you hot under the collar, look no further than Outer Banks. Trust me, once you start watching, you won’t be able to stop.

In recent years, the banking sector in Nigeria has been plagued by various cases of fraud and financial misconduct. Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in the country are constantly under pressure to detect and prevent fraudulent activities in order to protect their customers and maintain the integrity of the financial system. One of the key tools that can be used to combat fraud in DMBs is Computer Assisted Audit Techniques (CAATs). CAATs are software tools that can be used to automate the auditing process and detect anomalies in financial transactions. These tools can analyze large volumes of data quickly and accurately, making them an invaluable resource for auditors looking to identify potential instances of fraud.
By using CAATs, DMBs can improve their ability to detect and prevent fraud in a timely manner. These tools can help auditors identify patterns of suspicious activity, flag unusual transactions, and provide insights into potential fraudulent behavior. This can help DMBs take proactive measures to prevent fraud before it escalates and causes significant financial losses.
In addition to detecting fraud, CAATs can also help DMBs improve their overall control environment. By automating the auditing process, these tools can help DMBs identify weaknesses in their internal controls and implement measures to strengthen their control environment. This can help DMBs reduce the risk of fraud and improve their overall operational efficiency.
In conclusion, CAATs can be a powerful tool for DMBs looking to enhance their fraud detection and control capabilities. By leveraging the power of technology, DMBs can improve their ability to detect and prevent fraud, protect their customers, and maintain the integrity of the financial system.

It looks like we might go into 2025 with more Grimes and Azealia Banks drama. The singers have been going toe to toe on social media off and on since 2018, and on December 26, they started hissing at each other, with Banks making some wild claims on X, formerly known as Twitter, which is now run by Grimes’s ex-boyfriend, Elon Musk.
How the feud got reignited
This drama is a little wild with years of insults, but the bad blood got reignited this week after Grimes responded to an edited image of her and Banks as Glinda and Elphaba from Wicked. “Hate to say it but would’ve been kinda lit,” she responded.
Azealia Banks responds
Banks caught sight of Grimes’ response and did not hold her fingers with her fiery response saying Musk “harvested” her eggs and took a picture of her c- section. “girl the way u are still trying to hold out on some weird ass innocent bull***t years later after u got dumped, cheated on, ur kids kidnapped and still trying to paint me like the villain and act like ur above me when ur getting conned by felons secretary,” Banks began.
Banks had other responses on X but they’re a bit too offensive to keep repeating.
What Banks is talking about
Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, shares two sons, X Æ A-Xii and Techno Mechanicus, and a daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl. As noted by DailyMail, Grimes claimed in November that the billionaire father of 12 wouldn’t let her see their children for 5 months. The former couple had been in a legal battle since April 2022, suing and countersuing each other for custody and parental rights.
She took to X to explain, “‘ Spent a year locked in battle in a state with terrible mothers’ rights having my Instagram posts and modeling used as reasons I shouldn’t have my kids and fighting and detaching from the love of my life as he becomes unrecognizable to me, with a fraction of his resources (or IQ/ strategy experience).”
The singer did not share many more details, but DailyMaiil reported that the Travis County Clerk confirmed that the Texas dispute was settled in November.
As for the whole C-section thing, Grimes claimed in the past that Musk took a photo of her while she was having a C-section for X Æ A-Xii and circulated it without her consent.
Grimes responds
Grimes responded to Banks, saying it was just a joke. While she didn’t shut down her claim that he cheated on her, she did refute that Musk broke up with her. “It’s just a funny joke bro. Not trying to paint you as a villain. I didn’t ‘get dumped.’ I bounced. ‘My amazing baby is asleep in my bed beside me, I’m in love. No regrets. Life is as beautiful as you want it to be. Ur insanely talented,” she wrote, “even after all this, I want u to win. god bless Mlady.”
Grimes then responded to an X user calling Banks ‘problematic’ saying “She is the best hater on the planet. The da Vinci of insults. At a point I just gave up and accepted that I appreciate the madness of existence.”
The mother of 3 also claimed, “She literally blackmailed me for 250k and leaked all our personal texts cuz I wouldn’t pay her lol. Think i was actually p nice to not press charges.”
They’ve stopped responding to each other, and from one of Grimes’ tweets, it seems like she may have finally blocked Banks.
Grimes recently took to social media to shut down claims made by rapper Azealia Banks that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had dumped her.In a series of now-deleted Instagram stories, Banks alleged that Musk had ghosted her after inviting her to his house to work on music. She also claimed that Grimes had ignored her messages and calls, leading her to believe that the couple was no longer together.
However, Grimes quickly responded to Banks’ allegations, stating that she and Musk were still together and that Banks’ claims were false. She also urged Banks to stop spreading lies and focus on her own career.
This latest drama comes after Banks previously accused Musk of tweeting while on acid and called him a “beta male” in a series of tweets last year.
It seems like the drama between Banks and Musk is far from over, but for now, Grimes has made it clear that she and Musk are still going strong.

Crowds out and about in the Outer Banks on Christmas Eve
OUTER BANKS, N.C. — It’s not quite the summer crowds that the Outer Banks is used to seeing, but many were still out and about getting some Christmas Eve shopping in before the holiday.
“The Christmas Shop has been a staple for families through generations. You’ll see a grandma bring in her daughter and her granddaughter since they were little,” said Shelia Hinkle, store manager of The Christmas Shop.
The Christmas Shop has been a part of the Outer Banks for more than five decades. Like many businesses, it has a busy summer season, but that also picks back up during the holidays.

“Our busy season are when the tourists are here, it’s our busiest time of the year. Then from Thanksgiving to Christmas, we have another boost,” said Hinkle.
Up in Kill Devil Hills, another Outer Banks staple keeps its doors open all year. And though they saw the crowds for Christmas Eve, that’s just a normal day at Henry’s.
“We don’t have the down time. When the other restaurants close, we get that overflow and it’s great,” said Maureen Foster, who has worked at Henry’s for 34-years.

After busy gift sending season, Outer Banks business shifts to holiday returns
The holiday season is a busy time for everyone. That’s especially true at shipping businesses, including one that has been a part of the Outer Banks for four decades: OBX Shipping Center.
“I believe the Monday before the Christmas week was our busiest day of the year. I believe we processed over 800 packages that day and we processed over 4,000 packages that week,” said Judy Hahs, president and owner of OBX Shipping Center.
As the holiday rush slows down, the business stays busy with its normal operations but also customers coming in to mail out returns.

“It’s not as busy. There’s a lot of returning going on. So, with our culture turning to an internet shopping culture, there’s things that are going to be returned, and we’re busy with that,” said Hahs.
Lynn Shell is the owner of Outer Banks Boarding Company but on Thursday he was a customer, mailing out products that people had purchased from OBBC online.
“We process the order, we print the label, get the shipping, and all we’re doing is dropping off here,” said Shell.
That convenience, being able to ship through numerous companies, and the community connection the shop has built, is something the business is proud to be able to offer.

“I think it’s the choices, and being an independent shipping company, we can offer those choices. We’ve been established for so long as providing services to people here that I think that’s what brings them back, that and the options,” said Hahs.
Hahs said they expect the return season to keep them busy until mid-January, but things won’t slow down for long.
“We’ll be going right into tax season where people are interested in shredding and getting their records cleaned up,” said Hahs.
In a business that has served generations, they are proud to keep doing just that not just during the holiday season, but all year.
“There are generations that have grown up here. When we first started, we were seeing the grandparents and the parents coming in. Now, we’re seeing the kids coming in with their families in the summers,” said Hahs.
More stories from The Outer Banks
The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be winding down, but for businesses on the Outer Banks, the work is far from over. As the gift-giving frenzy comes to a close, many companies are now shifting their focus to processing holiday returns. With online shopping at an all-time high this year, the volume of returns is expected to be significant. From ill-fitting clothing to duplicate gifts, customers will be looking to exchange or return items in the coming weeks.
For Outer Banks businesses, this means reorganizing inventory, restocking shelves, and processing returns efficiently to keep customers happy. Many companies are offering extended return policies and flexible options to accommodate the influx of returns.
As the holiday season transitions into the new year, businesses on the Outer Banks are gearing up for a different kind of busy season. While the focus may have shifted from gift giving to returns, one thing remains constant – providing excellent customer service and ensuring a positive shopping experience for all.

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — Fred and Peggy Matthis have been vacationing in the Outer Banks for decades, but this year, they decided to celebrate Christmas a little differently by spending the holiday alone.
“We actually just decided we were going to spend Christmas by ourselves. We have six children and 12 grandchildren,” Fred said.
“Get out of dodge. Have time to ourselves,” added Peggy.
The Matthis couple, who live in Pittsburgh, made the trip to the Outer Banks to enjoy the holiday season and take advantage of local traditions, including The Jolly Roger Restaurant’s commitment to being open on Christmas Day for decades.
“We said, ‘Let’s go down here and see what it’s like for Christmas.’ We’ve always heard it’s really nice, and then this is our favorite place to eat, right here. We come here every morning,” Fred explained.
Owner Carol Ann’s motivation to remain open originated from a personal experience when she found herself alone on Christmas one year, unable to find an open restaurant.
“Well, there was one particular Christmas Day that she was by herself, and the restaurant was closed, and she wanted Christmas dinner. She ended up eating a hot dog from 7-Eleven,” said Andrea Sullivan, general manager of The Jolly Roger Restaurant. “She vowed that she would not be closed on any more Christmases so that people without a place to go or who don’t want to cook could have somewhere to enjoy a meal.”

For many, Christmas at The Jolly Roger is about enjoying time with family while savoring the restaurant’s offerings.
“Very good food and very good Bloody Mary too,” commented Connie Pentek, a local resident.
Regardless of the reason for their visit, patrons are grateful for the opportunity to dine out on Christmas Day, which fosters a special sense of community for the restaurant staff.
“I’ll try not to cry, but it is, it’s very heartwarming just to see the same people,” Sullivan said. “They patronize us all year long, but they come in for Christmas because they love it.”
Every year on Christmas Day, locals and visitors alike gather at The Jolly Roger in the Outer Banks to partake in a decades-old tradition that warms the heart and spreads holiday cheer. The Jolly Roger, a beloved mainstay in the Outer Banks, has been hosting a special Christmas Day event for as long as anyone can remember. The day starts with a festive brunch featuring all the traditional holiday favorites, from roasted turkey and stuffing to cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
After brunch, guests are invited to participate in a heartwarming tradition that truly embodies the spirit of Christmas. Each year, The Jolly Roger team collects donations of food, clothing, and toys to be distributed to families in need throughout the Outer Banks community. It’s a beautiful display of generosity and compassion that reminds everyone of the true meaning of the holiday season.
The atmosphere at The Jolly Roger on Christmas Day is always filled with joy and goodwill, as friends and strangers come together to celebrate and give back to those less fortunate.
