  • Barcelona 1-0 Alavés (Feb 2, 2025) Game Analysis

Robert Lewandowski‘s second-half strike secured a 1-0 win for Barcelona against Alavés on Sunday, as the third-placed hosts reduced the gap on LaLiga leaders Real Madrid to four points.

Lewandowski broke the deadlock after a tense first half when Lamine Yamal‘s cross took a deflection off Nahuel Tenaglia and fell to the Polish striker who shot home from close range in the 61st minute.

Robert Lewandowski continued his impressive scoring season against Alavés.

A clash of heads had forced Gavi and Tomas Conechny off the field early on as the match got off to a slow start, with Lewandowski shooting wide from Raphinha‘s deflected cross near the half-hour mark.

Alaves suffered their second league defeat since coach Eduardo Coudet took charge in December and remain 18th in the table, two points below safety. Barcelona moved to 45 after 22 matches.

Barcelona secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Alavés in a hard-fought La Liga match on February 2, 2025. The game was filled with drama and excitement as both teams battled it out on the field.

Barcelona dominated possession from the start and created numerous scoring opportunities, but were unable to find the back of the net in the first half. Alavés, on the other hand, defended resolutely and looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

The breakthrough finally came in the 65th minute when Barcelona’s star striker, Antoine Griezmann, scored the only goal of the game with a clinical finish from inside the box. The goal was a result of a quick passing sequence that sliced through Alavés’ defense.

Despite their best efforts, Alavés were unable to find an equalizer as Barcelona’s defense held firm until the final whistle. Barcelona’s goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen, made several crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet and secure all three points for his team.

Overall, it was a hard-fought victory for Barcelona against a resilient Alavés side. The win keeps Barcelona in the hunt for the La Liga title and boosts their confidence as they continue their season. Alavés, on the other hand, will be disappointed with the result but can take heart from their strong defensive performance against one of the league’s top teams.

  • Barcelona – Alaves. Lewandowski nazwany “koszmarem”. To padło przed meczem

Robert Lewandowski podczas niedawnego szalonego starcia przeciwko Benfice w Lidze Mistrzów (5:4 na korzyść FCB) zdobył dwie bramki, a niedługo potem dołożył też cegiełkę do prawdziwego pogromu, jaki “Barca” sprawiła Valencii (7:1) i zdołał raz pokonać golkipera Giorgiego Mamardaszwilego.

    • 12 listopada 2023, Barcelona 2:1 Alaves (dublet “RL9”)
    • 3 lutego 2024, Alaves 1:3 Barcelona (jedno trafienie)

Barcelona – Alaves: Lewandowski named “nightmare”. It was said before the match

In a surprising turn of events, Robert Lewandowski has been dubbed as the “nightmare” for Barcelona ahead of their clash with Alaves. The Polish striker has been in sensational form this season, scoring goals for fun and terrorizing defenses across Europe.

Barcelona will have to be on high alert as they face off against a formidable Alaves side, with Lewandowski leading the line. The Catalan giants will have to come up with a game plan to contain the prolific striker and prevent him from adding to his goal tally.

It promises to be an exciting encounter as Barcelona look to secure a crucial victory, while Alaves will be looking to cause an upset and continue their impressive run of form. Will Lewandowski prove to be the “nightmare” for Barcelona, or will the Catalan giants find a way to neutralize his threat? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for what promises to be an enthralling match between Barcelona and Alaves.

Following an entertaining draw against Atalanta to wrap up the first part of their European campaign this season in midweek, Barcelona turn their attentions back to La Liga when they meet Deportivo Alavés at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Barça come into this one having completed the mission of finishing in the Top 2 of the inaugural League Phase of the Champions League, and they can now focus solely on domestic matters over the next month.

There’s a big Copa del Rey quarter-final away to Valencia on the horizon, but the main objective in the next four weeks is to stay alive in the title race by doing their homework while hoping that Real Madrid, who have a monster European playoff against Manchester City to worry about this month, continue to drop points along the way and let Barça back in the fight.

The Catalans cannot afford any slip-ups in the league, especially against relegation candidates at home. They did a lot of that early in the season, but showed a ton of strength last week by dominating Valencia and scoring seven goals with authority in front of the Montjuïc crowd.

They have the same task this Sunday against an Alavés side that may be fighting against the drop but have lost just once since November, a run that includes a big win away to Real Betis last month. They are definitely not the most talented team in the league but are well organized at the back and always compete until the very last minute, and have a real goalscoring threat in striker Kike García.

Barça could be looking at another Las Palmas or Leganés situation if they are not careful, and they can’t take this one for granted. They must replicate the performance against Valencia and establish their superiority from the start, and not allow Alavés to have any hope in the game.

    Let’s dance.

    POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-2-3-1): Szczesny; Kounde, Araujo, Cubarsí, Martín; Casadó, Pedri; Yamal, Gavi, Raphinha; Lewandowski

Alavés (4-2-3-1): Owono; Tenaglia, Mouriño, Diarra, Sánchez; Blanco, Guevara; Vicente, Guridi, Conechny; García

    PREDICTION

Barça showed strength against Valencia last week and sent a statement that they’re not out of the race just yet, and I trust they’ll do the same again this time: 3-0 to the good guys.

Barcelona will face Alavés in a highly-anticipated La Liga clash this weekend. Both teams will be looking to secure a vital victory as they continue their quest for success in the Spanish top-flight.

    Team News:
Barcelona will be without the services of star forward Lionel Messi, who is sidelined with an injury. However, they will still have a strong squad at their disposal, with players like Antoine Griezmann, Frenkie de Jong, and Ansu Fati ready to step up and make an impact.

On the other hand, Alavés will be boosted by the return of key players such as Joselu and Lucas Pérez. They will be looking to capitalize on Barcelona’s defensive vulnerabilities and secure a positive result in this fixture.

    Preview:
Barcelona will be eager to bounce back from their recent disappointing results and put on a strong performance against Alavés. They will be looking to dominate possession and create scoring opportunities through their intricate passing and movement.

Alavés, on the other hand, will be looking to frustrate Barcelona and hit them on the counter-attack. They will be organized defensively and look to capitalize on any mistakes made by the Catalan giants.

    Lineups:
Barcelona: Ter Stegen, Araujo, Lenglet, Dest, Alba, Busquets, De Jong, Pedri, Dembélé, Griezmann, Fati.

Alavés: Pacheco, Navarro, Lejeune, Laguardia, Duarte, Battaglia, Pina, Deyverson, Pérez, Rioja, Joselu.

    Score Prediction:
Barcelona will be the favorites to win this match, but Alavés will provide a tough challenge. I predict a 2-1 victory for Barcelona, with Griezmann and Fati getting on the scoresheet for the home side. However, Alavés will put up a strong fight and make it a close contest until the final whistle.

  • Key Barcelona forward aiming to end his three-month goal drought in La Liga against Alaves

Lamine Yamal continues to capture the hearts of Barcelona fans with his remarkable performances on the pitch.

Game after game, the young talent from Rocafonda sets high standards for himself, always seeking to improve.

However, his competitive nature was evident during the recent Champions League clash against Atalanta, where frustration got the better of him as Barcelona relinquished their top position in the group.

Yamal left the field visibly upset, feeling he could have contributed more to his team’s efforts.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick intervened, offering words of reassurance before Yamal took his place on the bench. The disappointment soon faded, though, as he was named the best player of the match and awarded the MVP trophy.

Flick’s decision to substitute Yamal was a tactical move, bringing Pau Víctor onto the pitch to address specific challenges in the attack.

    A challenge in La Liga

Despite his incredible form, Yamal faces a challenge in La Liga — a goal drought that has persisted for three months. His last league goal came in the memorable clash against Real Madrid on November 3.

Since then, he has found the net in every other competition. He scored in the Super Cup against Athletic Club and Real Madrid, netted in the Copa del Rey against Betis, and delivered a crucial strike in the Champions League against Atalanta.

This season, Yamal has reached double figures in both goals and assists, boasting 10 goals and 13 assists across all official competitions.

Beyond these impressive statistics, his impact on the pitch has been undeniable. The fans adore him, and he has become an integral part of Barcelona’s attacking trio alongside Lewandowski and Raphinha.

Yamal’s presence alone is enough to unsettle opposing defences. With his creativity and ability to pull off extraordinary plays, he remains a constant threat.

Barcelona fans have been eagerly waiting for their key forward to break his goal drought in La Liga, and the upcoming match against Alaves could be the perfect opportunity for him to do so.

Despite his impressive performances in other competitions, the forward has not been able to find the back of the net in La Liga for the past three months. This has been a cause for concern for both the player and the fans, as Barcelona’s success often depends on his goal-scoring ability.

With Alaves coming up next on the fixture list, all eyes will be on the forward to see if he can finally end his drought and help Barcelona secure a much-needed victory. The team will be counting on him to deliver, and he will be determined to prove his critics wrong.

It’s time for the key Barcelona forward to step up and show why he is considered one of the best in the world. Will he be able to end his goal drought and lead his team to victory against Alaves? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – all eyes will be on him during the upcoming match.

  • Watch: Barcelona fans reminded me of Messi as Lamine Yamal dribbles past half the Alaves defence

Watch: Barcelona fans reminded me of Messi as Lamine Yamal dribbles past half the Alaves defence

Watch: Barcelona fans reminded me of Messi as Lamine Yamal dribbles past half the Alaves defence

In light of Lamine Yamal’s brilliant performances throughout 2024, the winger is now widely regarded as the next big thing coming out of Barcelona after Lionel Messi.

In fact, comparisons with Messi have only increased as the forward develops his game and becomes even more influential in the Barcelona frontline.

    Yamal’s ‘Messi’ moment against Alaves

In the ongoing game against Alaves, Yamal once again reminded Barcelona fans why he is regarded as the ‘next Messi’ by fans and experts alike.

In the early stages of the game, the forward was seen picking up the ball midway through the pitch and starting dribbling across Alaves’ second line of press.

During his run, Yamal was able to sidestep multiple Alaves defenders in his wake, with some of them even getting beaten twice.

This little manoeuvre served as a reminder for Barcelona fans as to why Yamal is regarded as such a special talent.

At the end of the move, after dribbling past at least five or six players, Yamal had the vision to go across the middle of the final third and provide a lofted ball out wide to Raphinha, who was free.

Although Yamal’s sensational run and a key pass forward did not lead to a goal for Barcelona, it was indicator of the youngster’s potential and how he is similar to Yamal in terms of his ability to dribble past players at ease.

As a football fan, I always love watching talented players display their skills on the field. Recently, I came across a video of Lamine Yamal, a young player for Barcelona’s youth team, pulling off an incredible dribbling move against Alaves.

Watching Yamal effortlessly glide past half of Alaves’ defence reminded me of watching Lionel Messi in his prime. The way he used his quick feet and close control to leave defenders in his wake was a joy to behold. It’s moments like these that make football such a beautiful game.

It’s exciting to see young talents like Yamal coming through the ranks at Barcelona, and I can’t wait to see more of what he has to offer in the future. If he continues to develop his skills and maintain his composure on the ball, he could very well follow in the footsteps of the legendary Messi.

For now, I’ll continue to enjoy watching players like Yamal showcase their talents and remind me of the magic that players like Messi bring to the game. It’s moments like these that make being a football fan so special.

  • Three talking points ahead of Barcelona vs Alaves | La Liga GW 22

Three talking points ahead of Barcelona vs Alaves | La Liga GW 22

Three talking points ahead of Barcelona vs Alaves | La Liga GW 22

When Barcelona and Deportivo Alaves met earlier this season, Robert Lewandowski scored a sensational hat-trick to seal the match within 45 minutes.

Since then, the opponents’ season has not gone too well with them now sitting in 17th place, just one point ahead of Espanyol on the leaderboard.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are in a world of pain themselves in La Liga after dropping their lead and now finding themselves seven points behind Real Madrid.

Hansi Flick’s men have no room for error in the domestic competition and the coming weeks will be critical if they are to engineer a comeback. With the Madrid derby just around the corner, they will have serious chances to fight back.

Barça Universal brings you three talking points ahead of Barcelona vs Deportivo Alaves.

    Inigo’s return

Barcelona’s flying start to life under Hansi Flick was largely down to two factors – the perfect implementation of the high-pressing structure and the precise offside trap.

The team’s defensive duo of Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez stylistically fit in like a hand in a glove and thus did not make the team feel the absence of Ronald Araujo or Andreas Christensen for close to six months.

Araujo’s return from injury coupled with Martinez’s fitness blow, however, saw the Uruguayan gifted a string of games under Flick. While the centre-back was decent, it is clear that he did not get close to Martinez’s levels.

The Basque star, after all, has operated like a leader from the beginning of the season not only with his defensive contributions but also his maintenance of the offside trap.

His composure, decision-making, and distribution were sensational and it is clear that Araujo has not quite done enough to warrant replacing Martinez who has been one of the best in the world this season.

Back from his injury and set to return tomorrow, it is quite clear that the veteran star warrants his place back in the starting lineup. Not for any fault of Araujo’s but his own quality.

    Time for a tactical twist?

Start or rest Lewandowski?. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)Start or rest Lewandowski?. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)

Start or rest Lewandowski?. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)

Barcelona’s forward trio have been in great form all season, with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal wreaking havoc down the flanks and Robert Lewandowski bagging the goals upfront.

In recent months, however, the Polish striker has seen a dip in his form and is no longer as clinical in front of goal as he was in the initial months of the season.

Lewandowski has started on the bench on a few occasions this season, primarily to get rest given his age. However, it is likely now time for Barcelona to begin dropping his for tactical reasons given his low output.

On the three occasions, the Pole has started on the bench in recent games, the team has gone on to win by healthy margins and it is thus clear that his presence on the field is not a must.

Tomorrow, Flick could thus look to start the veteran on the bench and change his tactics. With Dani Olmo unavailable to play as a false nine, he could look to deploy Ferran Torres as the number nine.

The last time Barcelona tried a similar manoeuvre, they beat Valencia by a 7-1 scoreline and they could look to do that again tomorrow night.

    Szczesny must show his class

Hansi Flick confirmed that Wojciech Szczesny was his preferred goalkeeper once again ahead of Barcelona’s clash against Deportivo Alaves, and it is clear that the Polish goalkeeper has done enough to stay in the coach’s good books.

His period of rise began in the Spanish Super Cup earlier this year and there has been no looking back since as he has completely replaced Inaki Pena in the starting lineup.

However, it is clear that Szczesny’s place as the team’s numero uno goalkeeper is far from clear, especially given his moments of lapse of concentration that appear to strike game after game.

Szczesny has already been sent off once this season, made unnecessary tackles in the box, taken poor decisions coming out of his box, and has looked very shaky in possession.

While his shot-stopping mettle cannot be doubted, his ability on the ball has always remained a question and made him a weak link.

It is thus time for him to step up and show that he can be more reliable in possession and stitch together 90 minutes without making errors. After all, Inaki Pena is not too far behind on the pecking order.

    1. Barcelona’s title hopes on the line: With just two points separating them from league leaders Atletico Madrid, Barcelona cannot afford to drop any points in their upcoming match against Alaves. A win is crucial if they want to keep their title hopes alive and put pressure on their rivals.
    2. Alaves fighting for survival: On the other hand, Alaves find themselves in a relegation battle and will be desperate for points to climb out of the bottom three. Barcelona cannot underestimate their opponents, who will be fighting tooth and nail to secure a valuable result.
    3. Messi’s goal-scoring form: Lionel Messi has been in scintillating form of late, scoring 10 goals in his last 10 appearances. The Argentine superstar will be looking to continue his impressive run and lead Barcelona to victory against Alaves. His performance could be the key to unlocking Alaves’ defense and securing three crucial points for his team.

  • Player Ratings As Los Blancos Crumble in Barcelona

A frustrating night against Espanyol ended with Real Madrid dropping points in La Liga for the first time in over a month.

Although Real Madrid arrived at RCDE Stadium as the heavy favorites, nothing seemed to go right for Carlo Ancelotti’s men in the first half. Antonio Rüdiger was forced to come off the pitch due to injury just 15 minutes into the match, leaving Los Blancos’ already makeshift backline even weaker. Then, Vinícius Júnior saw VAR wipe away his goal for a foul committed by Kylian Mbappé in the build-up.

The defending Spanish champions went into the locker room deadlocked at 0–0 against 18th-place Espanyol. The second half soon proved to be just as frustrating as the first, and tensions threatened to boil over when Carlos Romero was only given a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Mbappé.

Just when a draw looked all-but guaranteed, Espanyol caught Real Madrid out on the counter attack and buried the lone goal of the night. Romero, who was fortunate to not be sent off earlier, sealed all three points for the hosts in the 85th minute.

Los Blancos now only have a one-point gap over Atlético Madrid atop the La Liga standings. With Real Madrid set to host the Madrid derby next weekend, they could very quickly come to regret their poor performance in Barcelona.

Casemiro – 6/10: Casemiro worked tirelessly in midfield and provided some much-needed defensive cover, but was unable to stop Barcelona’s midfield dominance.

Luka Modric – 5/10: The Croatian playmaker struggled to make an impact in the game and was largely ineffective in midfield.

Toni Kroos – 6/10: Kroos showed flashes of his quality with some incisive passing, but was unable to influence the game as much as he would have liked.

Vinicius Junior – 7/10: Vinicius was one of Real Madrid’s most dangerous players on the night and caused Barcelona’s defense plenty of problems with his pace and trickery.

Karim Benzema – 5/10: Benzema had a quiet game by his standards and was unable to make a significant impact in the final third.

Rodrygo – 4/10: The young Brazilian struggled to get into the game and was largely isolated up front.

Overall, it was a disappointing performance from Real Madrid as they crumbled in Barcelona. The players will need to regroup and bounce back quickly in order to keep their title hopes alive.

  • Rashford may take up Aston Villa interest if Barcelona dream falls through | Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford has his heart set on a loan move to Barcelona before Monday’s transfer deadline but could take up interest from Aston Villa if a deal with the Catalan club does not go through.

Barcelona need to offload up to two players to bring in Rashford and Villa also want the Manchester United forward on loan after selling Jhon Durán to the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. They, like Barcelona, can offer Champions League football after qualifying for the last 16.

Rashford has rejected offers from several other clubs, including Tottenham, because of his determination to join Barça. Under La Liga’s squad cost limit rules they will have to generate funds to spend the money required to sign Rashford. They are prepared in principle to cover most or all of his £365,000-a-week salary. With less than four full days until the window shuts at 11pm GMT on Monday, United hope a player out of favour under Ruben Amorim can secure a transfer.

If Rashford departs, United would be interested in bringing in the versatile Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, who is also a target for Tottenham and Villa, though it is understood he is not inclined to join Spurs.

Before Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League win over FCSB in Bucharest, Amorim indicated there may be a route back into his first-team plans for Rashford should the forward stay.

“You can look at our team and imagine the profile of the players,” the head coach said. “Now imagine a talent like Rashford. Our team should be so much better with Rashford. But he has to change. If he changes, we are more than welcome to put in a talent like Rashford. And we need it.”

Amorim has not selected Rashford since United’s 2-1 win at Viktoria Plzen on 12 December, citing “training reasons”. Two days after being dropped Rashford said he wanted a “new challenge” and he has since been in only one match-day squad, for the 2-0 defeat by Newcastle on 30 December.

Alejandro Garnacho was dropped along with Rashford for the game against Manchester City in December and Amorim is pleased with how the Argentinian forward has responded. Garnacho created Kobbie Mainoo’s goal against FSCB.

Amorim said: “He changed right away since that game against City. The way he understands things and that I just want to help him. He changed in everything: the approach when you talk with him, the way he recovers. He understands that sometimes I am a different coach, that I am demanding in my way and sometimes it is hard … but he understands that it is never in a bad way.”

The manager is also content regarding Mainoo’s form and denied the midfielder wanting improved terms and being potentially for sale had been unsettling. “Before, he was always playing. Now, he sometimes plays and sometimes not – he wasn’t comfortable – but maybe it is something to do with that. In that [attacking midfield] position [against FSCB], I feel that he was more happy to play. I felt it watching him. That is important because if they are happy, they play better. I think he can change position.”

Amorim did not deny that Mainoo and Garnacho, as homegrown players, were vulnerable to any realistic offer. “That part is true,” he said. “But I want players like Kobbie and Garnacho. The focus is that we have to improve our academy. To play, to feel the shirt, but also to sell them.”

United are close to sealing a deal to sign the Lecce full-back Patrick Dorgu for about €30m (£25m). Amorim said Tyrell Malacia was not ideally suited to his system as a wing-back “because he’s not so offensive” and that Luke Shaw needed “a little bit more time” to be match ready.

According to recent reports, Manchester United star Marcus Rashford may consider taking up Aston Villa’s interest if his dream move to Barcelona falls through.

Rashford has been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent weeks, with the Catalan giants reportedly interested in signing the talented forward. However, negotiations between the two clubs have reportedly hit a stumbling block, leading Rashford to consider other options.

Aston Villa have been monitoring Rashford’s situation closely and are said to be ready to make a move for the England international if he becomes available. The Midlands club are reportedly willing to offer Rashford a lucrative contract in order to entice him to Villa Park.

Rashford, who has been with Manchester United since he was a teenager, is said to be open to the possibility of a move away from Old Trafford if the right opportunity presents itself. While Barcelona remains his preferred destination, the prospect of playing regular first-team football at Aston Villa could also appeal to the 24-year-old.

It remains to be seen whether Rashford will indeed make the move to Aston Villa if his Barcelona dream falls through, but it is clear that the talented forward has plenty of options available to him as he considers his future. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
