  • Michigan LB Jaishawn Barham declines to declare for NFL Draft, staying at Michigan

On Thursday, the entire list of college football underclassmen that declared for the 2025 NFL Draft was released. As expected, Michigan Wolverines like Will Johnson, Colston Loveland, Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham were on the list.

But one notable player that has yet to officially announce his plans for the 2025 season was not included on the list — linebacker Jaishawn Barham.

Additionally, with the portal closed for non-graduate transfers until the spring, that means Barham is officially back for the 2025 season.

This is great news for the Wolverines, as Barham was a standout player in 2024. He appeared in all of Michigan’s games this season and finished the year with 66 total tackles, four tackles for loss, two pass breakups and one sack.

He was arguably Michigan’s biggest addition from the transfer portal following the 2023 season. Barham came over from Maryland where he was a two-year starter, making 23 starts across his freshman and sophomore seasons. In that time, he complied 95 tackles, including 10 for a loss, seven sacks and one interception.

During Barham’s 2022 campaign, he was named a first-team Freshman All-American by the College Football News. He also earned All-Big Ten honorable mentions from the media. During his sophomore year in 2023, Barham earned All-Big Ten honorable mentions from the coaches.

Originally a native of District Heights, Maryland, Barham was a highly sought after recruit. He was ranked as a four-star recruit and was the No. 119 overall player in the 2022 class according to the 247Sports composite. He played his high school ball at St. Frances Academy and chose to commit to Maryland over the likes of South Carolina, Penn State, and Oklahoma.

Now with Barham back for his senior year, Michigan will head into the offseason with its entire nucleus of linebackers from last year. Ernest Hausmann is also back for his senior year, and Jimmy Rolder is an exciting, ascending soon-to-be junior. Not to mention, Cole Sullivan is a player the coaches are very high on, and incoming true freshman Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng was a heavily recruited prospect in the 2025 class.

Michigan linebacker Jaishawn Barham has announced that he will not be declaring for the NFL Draft and will be returning to the Wolverines for another season. Barham, a key contributor on Michigan’s defense, made the decision to stay in Ann Arbor to further develop his skills and help lead the team to success in the upcoming season.

Barham had a standout junior season, recording 76 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks. His decision to return for another season is sure to bolster Michigan’s defense and provide leadership on and off the field.

With Barham’s return, Michigan fans can look forward to seeing him make even more impact plays next season. His decision to stay with the Wolverines is a testament to his dedication to the team and his desire to continue to grow as a player.

Stay tuned for more updates on Jaishawn Barham and the Michigan Wolverines as they prepare for the upcoming season. #GoBlue

  • Michigan linebacker Jaishawn Barham does not declare for the NFL Draft, implying return for 2025 season

The Michigan football team’s defense will look different in 2025. The Wolverines will no longer have multi-year contributors like Mason Graham, Will Johnson, Kenneth Grant, Josaiah Stewart and Makari Paige.

But the Wolverines still expect to have a solid amount of star power on defense next season. That belief was furthered Thursday afternoon, when Michigan linebacker Jaishawn Barham was not listed among the 70 underclassmen who declared for the 2025 NFL Draft in time to be considered.

Though neither Barham nor Michigan have officially announced Barham’s intention to return for 2025, him not declaring for the draft as a third-year player is a pretty strong implication that he is back with the Wolverines for the 2025 season. He was the No. 147 prospect in Pro Football Focus’s big board, and the No. 12 linebacker.

Barham, who transferred to Michigan last December after two strong seasons at Maryland, finished the 2024 season with 66 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two pass breakups, 20 quarterback pressures and 21 run stops. The 6-foot-3, 248-pounder played 76 of his 626 snaps at edge, and is expected to spend more time there in 2025, similar to his time at Maryland and helping him showcase his ability at the position to NFL scouts.

That increased time at edge is also in part to maximize Barham’s strength as a tackler, run-stopper and pass-rusher. According to Pro Football Focus, Barham finished sixth out of 147 qualified power-conference linebackers with a missed tackle rate of just 5.9 percent. He was also 26th in quarterback pressures, ninth in PFF’s run defense grade, with 21 run stops and one missed tackle in run defense. That ratio is actually the second-best among power-conference linebackers in the country.

It wasn’t a perfect season for Barham, who notably ranked 79th among linebackers in passer rating allowed and visibly struggled in coverage this season. But with good length, tackling ability and overall athleticism, Barham can emerge as a versatile defensive disruptor next season, and has first-round potential if he continues to progress his game.

In addition to Barham’s return, Michigan also is currently slated to return starting linebacker Ernest Hausmann  safety Rod Moore, cornerbacks Zeke Berry and Jyaire Hill, edge rusher Derrick Moore and high-usage backups such as TJ Guy, Brandyn Hillman, Mason Curtis, Cameron Brandt, Jimmy Rolder and Trey Pierce. At linebacker, Cole Sullivan and Georgia transfer Troy Bowles could join Hausmann and Rolder at the top of the rotation, and give Barham a chance to move around more.

Michigan showed what its 2025 defense could do, as the Wolverines held then-No. 11 Alabama to 13 points with six sacks and three forced turnovers in Michigan’s upset win over the Crimson Tide in the ReliaQuest Bowl. That performance came without projected first-round picks Will Johnson, Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, who had all previously declared for the NFL Draft.

Michigan linebacker Jaishawn Barham does not declare for the NFL Draft, implying return for 2025 season

In a surprising turn of events, Michigan linebacker Jaishawn Barham has announced that he will not be declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft. This decision comes as a shock to many, as Barham was widely considered to be a top prospect at his position.

Barham’s decision to return for the 2025 season is great news for Michigan fans, as he has been a standout player for the team over the past few years. His leadership on and off the field has been invaluable, and his return will undoubtedly bolster the defense for the upcoming season.

With Barham back in the lineup, Michigan will be a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten and beyond. His decision to forego the NFL Draft shows his commitment to the team and his desire to compete for a championship in his final year of eligibility.

Fans can now look forward to seeing Barham wreak havoc on opposing offenses once again, as he looks to solidify his legacy as one of the greatest linebackers in Michigan history. Here’s to a successful 2025 season for Jaishawn Barham and the Wolverines!
