Most valuable player for each NFL team: Saquon Barkley key cog for Eagles during 2024 season
The 2024 regular season is in the rearview mirror and all that’s left before we put the entire year to bed is Super Bowl LIX. While the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are gearing up for that bid to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, most clubs around the league are looking back and evaluating the year that was. And we’ll join in on that fun by looking at every team in the NFL and identifying their team-specific MVP for the regular season.
Of course, quarterbacks will make up a sizable contingent in this list of MVPs given the importance of the position. Still, both sides of the ball and multiple position groups will also be well-represented. Let’s dive in.
McBride followed up his breakout 2023 season with a sensational 2024 campaign. In 16 games played, McBride hauled in 111 receptions, which was the second-most in a single season in franchise history, only looking up to DeAndre Hopkins‘ 115 catch season in 2020. McBride’s receptions also ranked fourth among all pass catchers in the NFL in 2024 and second-most among tight ends.
Even as the Falcons offense went through a tumultuous year that included a late-season quarterback change, Robinson was lights out in the backfield. Of his 17 games played, Robinson had 12 games where he registered at least 100 yards from scrimmage, including 10 of the Falcons’ final 12 games of the year as they looked to make a playoff push. Robinson was also more efficient as a rusher than he was during his rookie season, averaging 4.8 yards per rush.
2025 NFL QB matchmaker: Sam Darnold to the Jets, Kirk Cousins to the Browns, plus 15 other big-name proposals
Cody Benjamin
Baltimore had a number of worthy candidates (Kyle Hamilton, Derrick Henry, etc.), but how could we not go with Jackson in this spot? After all, he was named a First Team All-Pro and seems earmarked to win his third career MVP award. This comes after the best statistical season of his career, reaching new highs in passing yards, passing touchdowns and yards per attempt. Jackson became the first player in NFL history to record over 4,000 yards passing and 900 yards rushing in a single season.
Of course, Josh Allen is an obvious (and worthy) option here as he was a Second Team All-Pro this season and will probably come in second place in the overall league MVP award race, but let’s give Cook some love. When Buffalo’s offense was humming at its peak, it was when Cook was finding success on the ground. In his third season in the league, Cook tied a Bills single-season record with 16 rushing touchdowns.
Hubbard was one of the unsung players of 2024 and unfortunately had his season cut short due to a calf injury. When he was on the field, however, he was one of the consistent forces within Carolina’s offense. He set career highs across the board and finished with 1,366 yards and 11 total touchdowns from scrimmage. Hubbard also parlayed this strong season into a four-year, $33.2 million extension in early November.
It was another forgetful year for the Chicago Bears that included a midseason coaching change, but Johnson continues to be a bright spot in the secondary. The corner earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl nod in 2024 after playing all 17 games for Chicago while posting eight pass breakups, two interceptions and 53 total tackles.
It’s a shame that the Bengals couldn’t get it together and make a better run at the playoffs as that failure has taken a bit of the shine off of the ridiculous season Chase put together. The Bengals superstar wideout finished with the triple crown, leading the league in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. There’s really nothing more Cincinnati could’ve asked from Chase, who is now in line to get a monster contract extension this offseason.
It’ll be interesting to monitor Garrett this offseason as a potential trade candidate with the Browns possibly hitting the reset button. Looking back on the 2024 season, the pass rusher continues to be one of the best in the league and was again a lone bright spot for the Browns overall. He was named a First Team All-Pro for the fourth time in the last five seasons after totaling 14 sacks, 22 tackles for a loss and three forced fumbles.
Even with Dak Prescott being limited to just eight games this season due to injury, Lamb was still able to help the Cowboys offense produce with Cooper Rush under center. The star pass catcher was named a Second Team All-Pro after catching 101 passes for 1,194 yards and six touchdowns.
Surtain continues to rival for the title as the NFL’s top cornerback. The Broncos defender logged his third-straight Pro Bowl season in 2024 and was named a First Team All-Pro for the second time in three seasons. Surtain headlined a Broncos defense that was among the very best in the league in most statistical categories, including the second-fewest yards per play allowed. Surtain had 11 passes defended this season to go with four interceptions.
At their core, the Detroit Lions were a ground-and-pound football team and Gibbs was the key catalyst in those efforts. One part of the Sonic and Knuckles backfield duo alongside David Montgomery, Gibbs put together a sensational second season in the NFL, totaling 1,929 yards and 20 touchdowns from scrimmage. He also carried the load when Montgomery missed the latter half of the season due to injury, including a three-touchdown performance in Week 18 against the Vikings to help clinch Detroit the No. 1 seed.
The “other” former Giants player who had a tremendous first season away from New York was McKinney. After inking a four-year, $67 million contract with the Packers last offseason, the corner went out and put together a First Team All-Pro season in 2024. In 17 games played, McKinney finished the year with 88 tackles, a sack, 11 pass breakups and eight interceptions. In coverage, he allowed just a 78.5 passer rating against.
Stingley had all the tools to be a shutdown cornerback in the NFL and that was on full display during his third season in the league. In 17 games played, Stingley broke up 18 passes and had five interceptions, which helped him earn his first Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro nods in his young career. As the primary defender in coverage, he allowed just 47.1% of his targets against to be completed and a 51.2 passer rating.
Franklin has been a productive linebacker for the Colts over the last few years but took it to new heights in 2024. For the first time in his seven-year career, Franklin was named as an All-Pro (Second Team) and to the Pro Bowl. This comes after a league-leading 173 tackles to go with 3.5 sacks (career high), six pass breakups and five forced fumbles.
It didn’t matter who was throwing him the football, Thomas Jr. produced at an elite level during his rookie season. Despite losing his starting quarterback in Trevor Lawrence and having to turn to backup Mac Jones at various points during the season, Thomas completed his first year in the league with 87 receptions, 1,282 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns. It won’t be long until he’s considered one of the very best receivers in the entire NFL.
Kansas City Chiefs
Sometimes you just need to make the boring pick. Was it the most prolific statistical season of Mahomes’ career? No. Did the Chiefs offense look clunky at times? Yes. All that said, the Chiefs still managed to go 15-2 to earn the No. 1 seed in the AFC and that’s largely in part to Mahomes’ intangibles to win football games. He’s the reason why they are still playing with a chance to three-peat.
Bowers didn’t just have a good rookie season, it was one of the greatest rookie seasons of all time. Bowers set the record for the most receptions by a rookie in NFL history and also set a rookie receiving record by a tight end. That helped the first-year tight end land First Team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod.
There were a lot of great rookies in 2024, which had McConkey’s first season in the league fly a bit under the radar. The Georgia product blossomed into Justin Herbert’s go-to target, leading the team in receptions and receiving yards. His production helped the Chargers clinch a playoff berth for the first time since 2022. Once they got to the playoffs, McConkey set a rookie record with 197 yards in his debut.
On the defensive side of the ball, there was arguably no better rookie this season than Verse. He provided a necessary boost to a Rams defense that had just lost Aaron Donald to retirement that prior offseason. While no one player can replace what Donald did, Verse was a force that goes beyond what you’d expect from a first-year player. The Pro Bowler finished his first season in the league with 66 tackles, 18 quarterback hits, 11 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
It was another topsy-turvy season for the Dolphins on offense with Tua Tagovailoa missing time due to injury, but Achane continued to be one of the more electrifying players in the NFL. His 1,499 yards from scrimmage and 12 total touchdowns both led the team in 2024. While Achane wasn’t as efficient as he was during his brief showing as a rookie (7.7 yards per touch), he was still highly productive averaging 5.3 yards per touch during his second season in the league.
It ended on a rather sour note for Darnold in the playoffs, but his play during the 2024 season had the Minnesota Vikings pile up 14 wins and playing for the No. 1 seed in the NFC in Week 18. That’s impressive and came completely out of nowhere by the veteran. As you might expect, Darnold had career-best marks across the board in completion percentage, passing yards, and passing touchdowns, which helped him be named to the Pro Bowl for the first time. Despite that strong regular season, his playoff issues make his free agent prospects fascinating this offseason.
It was a forgetful year for the Patriots, who moved on from head coach Jerod Mayo after one season. However, Gonzalez continues to show that he is one of the franchise’s building blocks for the future and is one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. The second-year pro turned in a Second Team All-Pro season, breaking up 11 passes in New England’s secondary to go with two interceptions.
Kamara remains the constant in the New Orleans offense and is still one of the more versatile backs in the entire league. Even with the Saints quarterback situation in flux due to injury, Kamara logged 1,493 yards from scrimmage which was his best output since 2020. Without him in the backfield, New Orleans would’ve had zero threats on offense for most of the season.
New York Giants
It’s been a rough year for the Giants both on the field and off it watching Saquon Barkley advance to the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. If there is one thing they can hang their hat on, however, is that they have found a legit No. 1 receiver in Nabers. The rookie pass catcher flashed brilliance in his first season in the league and topped 1,200 yards in just 15 games played. Once New York solidifies its quarterback situation, Nabers is primed for an explosive sophomore season.
It was a breakout year for Sherwood in the Jets defense. He became a full-time starter and with that added opportunity put together the best season of his career. Sherwood totaled a team-high 158 tackles to go with 10 tackles for loss, two sacks and three pass breakups.
Philadelphia Eagles
Were you expecting anyone else? In his first season with the Eagles after signing with the organization in free agency, Barkley put together one of the greatest single seasons by a running back in NFL history. He had a shot to best Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record but opted to sit out of Week 18 to stay healthy for the playoff run. That has proven to be the right decision with Barkley going nuclear in the postseason to help Philly reach Super Bowl LIX. Even as the passing attack had its struggles this season, Barkley kept the offense humming and was liable to break off a 60-yard touchdown at any given moment.
Even in his 14th season in the NFL, Heyward continues to play at an elite level. The defensive tackle was a First Team All-Pro for the fourth time in his career in 2024. In 17 games, Heyward totaled 71 tackles, eight sacks and 11 pass breakups, which helped the Steelers reach the playoffs.
The title of best linebacker in the NFL continues to reside in Santa Clara with Warner. The seven-year veteran was named a First Team All-Pro for the fourth time in five seasons after a 2024 season where he tallied 131 tackles, a sack, seven pass breakups and two interceptions. It was an injury-filled season for the 49ers that helped them miss the playoffs, but Warner was a reliable figure on defense.
There was no sophomore slump for Smith-Njigba, who established himself as the No. 1 pass-catching option in Seattle’s offense. In an offense that features DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, Smith-Njigba led the team in targets, receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in 2024. Smith-Njigba really started to come on strong in the second half of the season, setting the stage for what could be an even bigger breakout in 2025.
The Buccaneers were able to win the NFC South even after losing Chris Godwin midway through the season and also with Mike Evans missing some time due to injury. That’s a credit to Mayfield, who threw for a career-high 41 passing touchdowns this season on top of 4,500 yards passing. Mayfield got that done by helping elevate the likes of Cade Otton, Bucky Irving and Jalen McMillan.
There were slim pickings with the Titans after finishing with a league-worst 3-14 record, but Landy was able to produce amid tough circumstances. In 17 games, the outside linebacker totaled nine sacks and 15 quarterback hits to go along with 15 tackles for loss and four pass breakups.
It was a night-and-day turnaround for the Commanders. After a 4-13 season in 2023, the franchise found itself finishing the 2024 regular season at 12-5 and playing in the NFC Championship. That was all thanks to their dynamic rookie QB, who has turned the fortunes of the franchise around for the foreseeable future. Daniels is primed to win Offensive Rookie of the Year after setting rookie records in rushing yards (891) and completion percentage.
As the 2024 NFL season comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the most valuable player for each team. For the Philadelphia Eagles, running back Saquon Barkley has proven to be a key cog in their success this year.Barkley, who was acquired by the Eagles in a trade with the New York Giants, has been a dominant force on the field all season. His explosive running ability, combined with his versatility as a pass-catcher out of the backfield, has made him a vital part of the Eagles’ offensive game plan.
Throughout the season, Barkley has consistently delivered big plays and clutch performances when the team needed them most. Whether it’s breaking off a long run for a touchdown or making a crucial catch on third down, Barkley has been a reliable and dynamic playmaker for the Eagles.
In addition to his on-field contributions, Barkley’s leadership and work ethic off the field have also been instrumental in the team’s success. His positive attitude and commitment to excellence have set a high standard for his teammates to follow, making him a valuable asset both on and off the field.
As the Eagles make a push for the playoffs, there’s no doubt that Saquon Barkley will continue to be a key player for the team. His impact on the field and in the locker room make him the clear choice for the Eagles’ most valuable player of the 2024 season.

Barkley set to be difference maker in Super Bowl rematch
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley presents the biggest threat to Kansas City’s aim of a third straight Super Bowl title. (Mitchell Leff) Two years on from their three-point win over Philadelphia in the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs face a rematch with the Eagles but with a big difference this time.
The added ingredient is Saquon Barkley, the explosive record-breaking Eagles running back and the biggest obstacle to the Chiefs winning an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl on February 9 at New Orleans.
In the 2022 season finale, Philadelphia’s main threat on the ground was quarterback Jalen Hurts, who put up 70 yards on 15 carries in a 38-35 defeat to the Chiefs.
Hurts remains highly effective in the running game but Barkley’s numbers this season are such that if the Chiefs can’t neutralise him, their path to victory becomes a narrow one.
Barkley ran for 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns with a 5.8-yard average in the regular season and he has continued his devastating form in the playoffs — adding 477 total yards and five touchdowns.
In the NFC Championship game, the Eagles steamrollered the Washington Commanders with Barkley and Hurts rushing for three touchdowns each.
The Eagles traded with the New York Giants for Barkley — a move which has transformed their offense and leaves the Chiefs with a real challenge.
“He’s a great player, potential future Hall of Famer,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said.
“He was tremendous at New York, he had a great year this year with the Eagles. So he has helped them, in especially the rush game, but he can catch the ball.
“They’ve got a quarterback that could throw the ball and two wide receivers out there that are tremendous and couple tight ends too. So they’re fully loaded on the offensive side. He has been a great addition for them.”
– Record breaking –
Barkley ended just 100 yards short of Eric Dickerson’s NFL regular-season record of 2,105 rushing yards, set in 1984.
He was denied a chance to break that record when Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni opted to rest his starters in week 18 with their playoff slot secured.
If Barkley had any disappointment over that decision, he didn’t show it.
“We didn’t come here and I didn’t sign here to break Eric Dickerson’s record,” he said. “We came here to win a Super Bowl.”
However, Barkley has a chance to break an arguably more significant record — he needs just 30 yards in the Super Bowl to surpass Terrell Davis’s record of 2,476 yards, in regular and post-season play, set in the 1998 season.
This season, he already has an NFL record seven rushing touchdowns of 60 or more yards, including three this post-season.
“This profession that we’re in, this sport that we’re in, there’s a lot of great things that we’ve accomplished so far up to this, but if we don’t get the job done next Sunday, maybe when you’re in your 30s and 40s and you look back at it, you’re going to think about how special it was but it’s kind of going to make it feel … like you came up short,” he said.
While many of the Eagles are fuelled by that Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs in Arizona, Barkley’s memories of that night are somewhat different.
The Giants are longstanding divisional rivals of the Eagles and he admits he wanted his current team to lose.
“Of course I was rooting against them… they had knocked us out of the playoffs. There was no part of me that wanted the Eagles to win, but it’s funny to look back on it now … being here with a lot of those guys that were part of that team,” he said.
Barkley says he will be just as fired up as those teammates who are out for revenge.
“Even though I wasn’t part of that team … when you’re able to develop a friendship and a relationship with these guys and be able to go to war with each other, it felt like I was,” he said.
“I can feel in my own body how it felt for them and see the confetti fall in the wrong color and having to walk out.
“Definitely don’t want to be part of that. That’s definitely something that drives us. For those guys that have been a part of it, but also just want to get the job done and knowing how it is for those guys, how it felt, and doing everything I can in my … ability to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

As the Super Bowl rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers approaches, all eyes are on running back Saquon Barkley. After a season plagued by injuries, Barkley is set to make a comeback and be a key player in the highly anticipated game.Barkley, known for his explosive speed and agility, has the potential to be a game-changer on the field. His ability to break tackles and make big plays has the potential to shift the momentum in favor of the New York Giants.
With both teams hungry for a victory, Barkley’s performance could be the deciding factor in the outcome of the game. Fans are eager to see if he can rise to the occasion and help lead his team to victory in the Super Bowl rematch.
As the countdown to the big game continues, all eyes will be on Barkley as he aims to make a statement and solidify his place as a difference maker in the Super Bowl rematch.

NBA Legend Charles Barkley Was Correct About Lakers Rookie Bronny James
Bronny James playing for the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the biggest storylines of the 2024-25 NBA season.
After a slow start, the former USC guard has played well in his previous three G League games for South Bay.
However, he struggled when he was given 15 minutes of NBA playing time against the Philadlephia 76ers (on Tuesday).

The 20-year-old finished with three rebounds, one assist and one block while shooting 0/5 from the field and 0/3 from the three-point range.

So far, the NBA legend appears to be correct in his analysis.
Barkley (on October 22) via the NBA on TNT: “Bronny is a prospect. Number one, I am glad he’s healthy. I think he should be in the G League. He’s not ready to play in the NBA right now. He should be in the G League, because he’s not ready to play in the NBA first and foremost. Secondly, there’s gonna be some guys coming for his head. He’s not ready. He’s really a tweener, he’s a point guard, two guard. His probably best attribute right now is being a defender. I think to take the pressure off him and let him get better as a player, he should be in the G League.”
In total, Bronny has appeared in 13 NBA games for the Lakers.

Recently, NBA legend Charles Barkley made headlines with his bold statement about Lakers rookie Bronny James. Barkley, known for his no-nonsense approach and insightful analysis, claimed that James has the potential to be a future star in the league. Many were quick to dismiss Barkley’s comments, citing James’ young age and lack of experience in the NBA. However, as the season has progressed, it has become increasingly clear that Barkley may have been onto something.
James has shown flashes of brilliance on the court, with his impressive scoring ability and basketball IQ. His confidence and poise under pressure have also caught the attention of fans and analysts alike.
While it is still early in his career, it is evident that James has the potential to make a significant impact in the league. Barkley’s prediction may have seemed bold at the time, but as James continues to develop and grow as a player, it is becoming increasingly clear that he may indeed be a future star in the NBA.
Only time will tell if Barkley’s prediction will come to fruition, but for now, it seems that the NBA legend may have been onto something when he spoke highly of Lakers rookie Bronny James.

Welcome home, Nick Richards.
The Phoenix Suns‘ new starting center dominated the paint with 20 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in a 119-109 win over the Washington Wizards at the Footprint Center on Saturday.
It was Richards’ Phoenix home debut, and his fourth game with the Suns since he was traded from Charlotte for Josh Okogie on Jan. 15.
“Rebounding, for sure, is one of the things that coach (Mike Budenholzer) emphasized with being on our first meeting, trying my hardest,” Richards said after the game.
Richards’ 19 boards are the second-most in franchise history for a new Suns player’s home debut. The record is held by Charles Barkley, who snatched 21 (and dropped 37 points) during the Hall of Famer’s first Suns home appearance in a season-opening win on Nov. 7, 1992.

Similar to Richards, the Round Mound Of Rebound’s 21 came after he was traded from Philadelphia. Richards could’ve gotten closer to Barkley’s record by grabbing a 20th rebound in the Suns-Wizards game’s closing seconds, but he literally fell short.
The Wizards’ Kyle Kuzma (game-high 30 points) missed a shot from deep at 27 seconds left. But as Richards boxed out the Wizards’ top rookie Alex Sarr, the ball bounced off Richards’ hand, then he tripped and fell as Devin Booker (18 points, team-high seven assists) tried to get out of his way to chase it down. Booker picked up the loose ball before it went out of bounds and milked the shot clock to seal the win.
“I tried, man,” Booker jokingly said as he stared at Richards in the Suns’ locker room after the game.
“He ain’t want it, let the ball go off his hand, falling all over the floor. He’ll get it, though. He’ll get it soon, too,” Booker added about Richards’ next chance at getting 20 boards.
Richards, 27, has wasted no time getting comfortable with the Suns — averaging 13.3 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 67.7% shooting in the past four games. Those are spiked numbers from his 8.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 56.1% averaged in 21 games for Charlotte this season.
The 7-foot Richards was spectacular in his 21-point, 11-rebound outing in a 125-121 win at Detroit on Jan. 18. Richards grabbed 15 rebounds in a 108-84 rout at Brooklyn on Wednesday, and 15 during the first half against Washington.
“He’s got a personality where I think he just, he wants to be there for his teammates,” Budenholzer said after beating Washington. “He wants to be there for his team. He’s trying to learn everything quickly. So, I just think there’s an unselfishness to him that’s been really good for us. And you know, his length on the glass, you know, to get 19 is impressive, and big free throws down the stretch, impressive.”
But Richards still feels like a nomad without a physical address.
During his first team practice at the Suns’ training facility on Friday, Richards giggled in response to a question about joining.
“I don’t think I have the feeling of being home right now,” Richards said with his Jamaican accent. “I’m still living out of a suitcase in a hotel room.”
Richards added the Suns organization has embraced him — desperately to fix rebounding issues, needing more size, youth, and athleticism in the middle. That’s especially on the offensive glass to extend possessions.
“We’ve got to keep encouraging him,” Kevin Durant (Suns’ high 29 points against Wizards) said. “It’s going to be him trying to learn on the fly, trying to come to a new team, and learning on the fly like this can be tough. But he’s picking up things pretty quickly, so he just needs to keep on working and keep getting better.”
Budenholzer benched former starter big Jusuf Nurkic entering their Jan. 6th win at Philadelphia and took him out of their center rotation. Mason Plumlee briefly replaced Nurkic as the Suns’ starting big until Richards got the nod in his second game at Cleveland.
The Suns ranked 25th in rebounding, 22nd on defensive boards, 28th in second-chance points, and 20th in second-chance points allowed before they acquired Richards, per NBA Stats. They improved to fifth, second, eighth, and 16th in those categories during Richards’ four games with the team.
Phoenix outscored Washington 23-7 in second-chance points and won the rebounding battle 53-37, including 12-5 in offensive rebounds. Richards got half of those on the offensive glass.
“I think everybody’s just making my job really easy,” Richards said. “From the jump coach, all the players, all the staff just tell me, just be yourself. Do what you do best, and you’re going to fit in right away.”
In a thrilling matchup against the Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns’ forward Jalen Richards put on a rebounding clinic, coming just shy of tying Charles Barkley’s franchise record. Richards’ dominating performance on the boards was a key factor in the Suns’ victory, showcasing his tenacity and skill in the paint. With his aggressive play and relentless pursuit of the ball, Richards finished the game with an impressive rebounding total, inching closer to Barkley’s legendary record. His ability to control the glass and create second-chance opportunities for his team was crucial in securing the win for the Suns.
As the season progresses, Richards’ rebounding prowess continues to impress, earning him a well-deserved reputation as one of the top rebounders in the league. With performances like this one, it’s clear that he is a force to be reckoned with on the boards and a valuable asset for the Suns’ success.
Stay tuned to see if Richards can break Barkley’s record and continue to dominate the glass in future games. Suns fans have a lot to look forward to with a player of Richards’ caliber leading the charge.

Eagles News: Saquon Barkley primed to feast on the Commanders’ defense
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …
Numbers to know ahead of Commanders-Eagles NFC Championship Game – ESPN
137.5 — Throughout his career, Saquon Barkley has feasted against the Commanders’ defense. The Eagles running back averages 137.5 scrimmage yards when playing against Washington. The only player to average more scrimmage yards against a single opponent in NFL history — including the playoffs in 10 or more games — is former Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown (147.9).NFL Conference Championship Games Betting Notebook – PFF
Barkley is averaging the most yards before contact per run of any running back in the NFL (2.5), and the Commanders are the only defense in the NFL allowing more than 2 yards before contact per designed rush (2.1). Barkley’s line continues to sit at a ridiculous number, but it’s warranted. This is a great matchup, and Philadelphia will likely continue to lean on a run game that’s been significantly more productive than its passing game. I won’t be betting Barkley’s over or under straight up, but I am interested in pairing the over with the Commanders’ moneyline for inverse correlation in single-game parlays. We saw last week that a home-run hitter like Barkley (Jahmyr Gibbs) can rip off explosives in a losing effort. Plus, the Eagles are unlikely to get into a situation where they’ll turn away from the run.Eagles-Commanders playoff preview: 11 things to watch in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game – BGN
3 – Can the Commanders stop Saquon Barkley? No. Saquon is unstoppable. The Commanders will try their hardest. But their run defense isn’t good: Only six teams allowed more yards per rush attempt this season. Only three teams allowed more rushing yards to running backs this season. The Commanders rank 27th in run defense EPA, 24th in run defense success rate, and 26th in run defense DVOA. And it could be even worse with starting defensive tackle Daron Payne ruled out of Sunday’s game.Saquon Barkley eyes two long-standing NFL playoff records against the Commanders – Inquirer
Barkley needs 148 rushing yards to break the NFL record for most rushing yards in a single season, set by Hall of Fame Terrell in 1998. That season Davis ran for a total of 2,476 yards counting the regular season, two playoff games and Super Bowl XXXIII (the Denver Broncos had a first-round bye). In two games against the Commanders poorly ranked run defense this season, Barkley rushed for a combined 296 yards, which averages out to 148 yards per game.3 expert player prop bets to make for Commanders vs. Eagles in the NFC Championship game – NJ.com
Saquon Barkley 2+ TDs. Odds: +255 at DraftKings Sportsbook The odds for Barkley as an anytime TD scorer are -225, so being aggressive and betting on more than one TD will provide a better return. The superstar running back can certainly deliver on this wager against the Washington defense. The Commanders allowed three rushing TDs to Detroit last week after allowing 16 during the regular season, which was tied for second-most in the NFL. Barkley rushed for two TDs in both matchups against Washington this season. He also rushed for two TDs last week against the Rams. As we have seen often this season, Barkley is capable of scoring from anywhere on the field, and with Jalen Hurts working through a knee injury, the Eagles may be slightly less inclined to use him as a rushing TD alternative.NFC Championship game – Commanders at Eagles precap – Hogs Haven
The Eagles are likely to lean into their dominant offensive line and the legs of Saquon Barkley when they take the field against Washington’s porous run defense. The Commanders, in two games against the Eagles in the regular season, did a good job at limiting Barkley for about 5 or 6 of the 8 total quarters played, but Saquon scored on runs of 23 yards and 39 yards in the final 5 minutes of the game in Philly, and he rushed for 122 yards and 2 TDs in the first half of the loss to the Commanders in Washington last month. It will be important for the Commanders defense to limit the damage inflicted by Saquon for a full 60 minutes. Injuries will increase the difficulty level for Washington today. Specifically, with DT Daron Payne out with knee and finger injuries, the team’s run defense is weakened. On first-and-10 runs this year with Payne on the field, the Commanders had a 64.4% success rate on defense, which was about average. Over 97 first-and-10 carries without Payne, that dropped to 51.6%, which was last in the league. On the other side of the ball, Washington lost RG Sam Cosmi to an ACL injury suffered against the Lions last week. This will create an incredible handicap in controlling Philly’s defensive game-wrecker, DT Jalen Carter, who may be the biggest defensive challenge that Philly will throw at Jayden Daniels & Co.X-Factors on offense for the AFC and NFC Championships – SB Nation
The Eagles keep winning primarily because Saquon Barkley is Thanos, and because Vic Fangio’s defense is one of the NFL’s best. That’s great and all, but anybody who doesn’t see the issues with Philly’s passing game is looking at the thing through green-colored glasses. This season, Jalen Hurts has completed 276 of 402 passes for 3,162 yards, 20 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a passer rating of 103.5, which is a career high. Add in Hurts’ 163 carries for 736 yards and 15 touchdowns, and it would seem that all is well. But the tape tells a different story. Hurts has had issues reading route progressions downfield this season, which has always been an issue, but things seem to have decelerated in that regard. Hurts is being used as more of a “game manager” in a pejorative sense. He’s thrown for less than 200 yards in eight full games this season, and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is asked week after week what’s wrong with the non-Saquon parts of the thing.Eagles mailbag: What is Commanders QB Jayden Daniels’ history in cold weather games? – PhillyVoice
Question from @saxncymbals (via Bluesky): How worried should we be about Zach Ertz ripping the Eagles’ hearts out? Ertz has rejuvenated his career in Washington and has played well this season. I could absolutely see him having an impact, particularly in the red zone. That said, while Ertz certainly has his fans in Philly, and rightfully so given his caeer here and his Super Bowl performance, I think he kinda ruined his chances of being a Philly legend for life. He could’ve been revered like Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, Lane Johnson, and Brandon Graham, but he forced his way out and is now playing against the Eagles in an NFC Championship Game. He will never be on the level of those other four guys in this city.Game Preview – Playoffs – WAS at PHI – Iggles Blitz
I expect the Eagles to be better prepared this time. They have seen WAS at their best. They know what that offense is capable of. CJGJ won’t get ejected. He’s toned down his talking and emotions since that incident. He’s still making plays so it hasn’t hurt his game. WAS had success with getting the ball to Austin Ekeler in the first game. He was 8-89 as a receiver and proved to be a tough matchup for the LBs. WAS has been using empty sets effectively in recent weeks. They will give the Eagles different groupings and looks to stress the defense. WAS runs far and away the most no-huddle in the league. That can stress a defense. It can also tire the pass rush. Jalen Carter is playing more than 90 percent of the snaps. You wonder if Carter will wear down. Will he be as effective late in the game? The Eagles pass rush must win their share of battles.A look at Eagles postseason records that could fall vs. Commanders – NBCSP
7. Nolan Smith closing in on multiple records. Nolan Smith has 3.0 sacks this postseason, only half a sack fewer than Haason Reddick’s Eagles single-season record of 3 ½, set during the 2022 Super Bowl run. Derrick Burgess also had 3.0 in 2004. Smith had half a sack in Tampa last year and his 3 ½ sacks are two fewer than Brandon Graham for the Eagles career record of 5 ½. Burgess, Hugh Douglas and Reggie White had 4.0. So one sack on Sunday moves Smith into second place. A sack Sunday would also make Smith the first Eagle ever with a sack in three consecutive postseason games. Several Eagles have had a sack in two straight: Snith, Reddick, Burgess, Jevon Kearse, Douglas and White. Smith’s 3 ½ sacks are 7th-most by a player before his 24th birthday and one more jumps him up into a tie for 3rd-most, behind George Karlaftis III (7.0) and J.J. Watt (5.0).Game Preview: Commanders vs. Eagles – PE.com
1. Giveaways, takeaways, turnover margin. You are probably tired of hearing this, but it matters: The teams that have won the turnover margin in the NFL playoffs this postseason are 7-0. Philadelphia has taken the football away six times in the wins over Green Bay and Los Angeles, with zero giveaways. That’s huge. The Eagles are 22-1 in their last 23 games when they’ve won the turnover battle, with the loss to Washington in Week 16 the exception. Washington has also not turned the football over and in the win over Detroit last week, the Commanders had 5 takeaways to fuel the upset victory. Washington had a plus-1 in turnover margin in the Wild Card victory at Tampa Bay. So, yeah, a reminder: This statistic matters maybe more than any in the game.Daniel Jeremiah 2025 NFL mock draft 1.0: Titans boost defense with first pick; Giants, Raiders select QBs – NFL.com
31) EAGLES. DT T.J. Sanders. There has not been a lot of buzz for Sanders, but I thought his tape was outstanding. He’s really twitchy and would fit right in with the bevy of talented defensive linemen in Philly.Weather won’t be an issue for the conference championship games – PFT
Last Sunday, snow was an issue for both of the divisional round playoff games. This Sunday, the weather for the conference championship games will be as good as it could be for an open-air contest in January. In the early game in Philadelphia, the current forecast has the kickoff temperature in the mid-30s, with no precipitation. The wind will be in the range of 5-10 mph, with gusts into the low 20s for Commanders-Eagles.A closer look at why an all-NFC East championship game is the peak of Cowboys embarrassing fallout – Blogging The Boys
When the Eagles and Commanders square off for the third time this season, looking to determine a series winner after both teams defended home field in the regular season, it will be a matchup of former Cowboys coaches in Eagles OC Kellen Moore and Commanders HC Dan Quinn as well. While Dallas’ circus of a coaching search ended with internal candidate Brian Schottenheimer being hired, two of their former assistants have found the grass much greener on the other side. As if the Cowboys going 7-10 and missing the playoffs entirely after winning the division a year ago didn’t offer enough potential for their front office to finally learn some hard lessons, the cherry on top has to be the two teams finishing ahead of them still vying for the Lombardi trophy.Survey results – Giants fans are rooting for Washington – Big Blue View
It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that almost three quarters of Giants fans rooting for the Commanders. Of course, that doesn’t mean that they’re happy about it. If we’re being honest, just about the only way this could be a more distasteful turn of events is if it was between the Eagles and the Cowboys. And that’s probably the reason behind the poll results: The Commanders are the lesser of two evils in the eyes of most Giants fans. There are Giants fans who genuinely enjoy watching Jayden Daniels play — though they’d much rather see him plying his trade in Blue. But there just isn’t as much animosity among Giants fans for Washington as there is for Dallas and Philly. After all, Washington has long been the only team that the Giants could reliably beat. Many of the negative feelings toward Washington likely went out the door with Dan Snyder, and many Giants fans have expressed sympathy for Washington fans saddled with an incompetent franchise.A Giants Fan’s Begrudging Guide to the NFC Championship Game – The Ringer
Most Agonizing Player to Contemplate: The image of Eagles running back Saquon Barkley hurdling backward over some bewildered Jaguars in November has been burned permanently into my brain. It’s filed somewhere between Odell Beckham Jr.’s one-handed catch and Carlos Beltran striking out looking—each one a tiny glimpse into the sports world that might have been if some things had only gone a little differently. “I’m gonna have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia,” Giants owner John Mara infamously said about then-pending free agent Barkley in last offseason’s Hard Knocks—which turned out to be a quietly disastrous look into New York’s front office. Me, I’ve had the opposite problem. The coolest player drafted by the New York Giants in ages just ran for over 2,000 yards while wearing Eagles paraphernalia—and then filmed a commercial for a sleep aid, trolling Mara!—and try as I might, I just can’t seem to wake up from this nightmare. In a vacuum, letting Saquon—a dynamic running back with an injury history—walk wasn’t in and of itself a bad decision. Except that the decision didn’t take place in a vacuum: It was part of a domino cascade of other, lesser choices, many of which related to the organization’s yearslong mishandling of quarterback Daniel Jones. And all of which brings me to Barkley’s competition in this category, the Commanders’ rookie passer, Jayden Daniels.…

In a highly anticipated matchup this weekend, the Philadelphia Eagles will face off against the Washington Commanders. One player who is poised to have a big game is Eagles running back Saquon Barkley.Barkley, who has been dealing with injuries throughout the season, appears to be fully healthy and ready to showcase his talent against the struggling Commanders defense. With his explosive speed and agility, Barkley has the ability to break off big runs and make defenders miss in the open field.
The Commanders defense has had its fair share of struggles this season, particularly against the run. They have allowed an average of over 120 rushing yards per game, which bodes well for Barkley and the Eagles’ rushing attack.
With the Eagles fighting for a playoff spot, expect Barkley to be heavily involved in the game plan and to have a significant impact on the outcome. If he can get going early and often, the Eagles offense could have a field day against the Commanders defense.
Keep an eye on Saquon Barkley this weekend as he looks to feast on the Commanders defense and help lead the Eagles to a crucial victory.

#Eagles #News #Saquon #Barkley #primed #feast #Commanders #defenseEagles RB Saquon Barkley is ‘definitely going to call’ LeSean McCoy in case of snow game versus Rams
Having grown up in the northeast and played college ball at Penn State before becoming a New York Giant and finally an Eagle this season, Barkley is no stranger to snow.
Nor is the ninth and newest member of the 2,000-yard rushing club new to operating on a different level himself.
Still, any intel is welcome when a trip to the NFC Championship Game is on the line — especially considering the Rams’ defensive hot streak and likely increased focus on Barkley after he undid them so ruthlessly in the regular season.
In Week 12, Barkley ran roughshod over Los Angeles, breaking McCoy’s previous single-game franchise rushing record with 255 yards and also setting an Eagles record for yards from scrimmage with 302. He scored twice, gargantuan outbursts of 70 and 72 yards. It was the most yards, both rushing and scrimmage, the Rams have ever allowed to a single player.
For as great as his performance was, though, Barkley is aware that the past two months have proven transformative for a young L.A. defense coming into its own.
In large part due to their D, the Rams haven’t lost a contest in which they’ve played their starters since that embarrassment, and from Week 15 through Wild Card Weekend have allowed 12.6 points per game and 96.6 rushing yards per game without giving up a single TD on the ground.
“They’re a way better team than they were on defense,” Barkley said. “In my opinion, watching film of them and seeing how much they’ve improved, they’re playing great football on that side right now. We know it’s going to be a challenge. When you rush for over 300 yards against a team, they’re going to have some type of game plan to make sure it don’t happen again.”
It’s fitting that the Rams’ next test pits them against the team and player that gashed them to historical proportions just before their late-season turnaround began.
But snow or no, and regardless of L.A.’s improvement, Barkley is confident his Eagles can reign victorious once again.
“I don’t really buy into the weather thing,” he said. “Whoever comes out there and executes is going to be the team that’s going to win. That’s my mindset. I trust in the system that we have and I trust in the game plan that we have. … Whether it’s five degrees or 90, just got to go out there and execute and we’re going to be alright.”
With the Philadelphia Eagles set to face off against the Los Angeles Rams in a potential snow game, running back Saquon Barkley is not taking any chances. Barkley, who is known for his explosive running style, has decided to reach out to former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy for some advice on how to navigate the slippery conditions. In a recent interview, Barkley revealed that he is “definitely going to call” McCoy for some tips on how to excel in a snow game. McCoy, who spent six seasons with the Eagles and is no stranger to playing in adverse weather conditions, is sure to have some valuable insights to share with Barkley.
With the stakes high and the weather unpredictable, Barkley is determined to be as prepared as possible for whatever Mother Nature throws his way. By seeking advice from a seasoned veteran like McCoy, he is showing his commitment to doing whatever it takes to help his team come out on top.
As Eagles fans eagerly await Sunday’s matchup, they can rest assured knowing that Barkley is leaving no stone unturned in his quest for victory. And if the game does turn into a snowstorm, they can trust that Barkley will be ready to rise to the occasion, thanks in part to the wisdom he gleaned from McCoy.

NFL announces 2025 award finalists for MVP, Coach of the Year, more: Saquon Barkley, Josh Allen still in mix
The NFL playoffs are approaching a fever pitch with Super Bowl LIX just around the corner. The league is also set to recognize the best of this season’s individual talent at the annual “NFL Honors” awards show, which is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 6, in New Orleans, home to this year’s big game.
In the meantime, the Associated Press has unveiled finalists for every major award category, including MVP and Comeback Player of the Year. Here’s who’s eligible to take home hardware:
Most Valuable Player
Getty Images
Allen and Jackson have long been considered the two front-runners for the league’s top individual accolade. The former got the best of their head-to-head showdown in the playoffs, while Jackson was a bit more prolific throughout the season, totaling 45 touchdowns for Baltimore.
Offensive Player of the Year
USATSI
Burrow was dynamic for an otherwise disappointing Bengals team, tying Jackson with 45 total touchdowns. And Chase was nearly unstoppable as his top target, hauling in 17 scores. Barkley made even more history, however, by eclipsing 2,000 rushing yards to carry the contending Eagles.
Defensive Player of the Year
Getty Images
Garrett and Watt are perennial contenders as standard-setters off the edge, but Hendrickson led the NFL with 17.5 sacks in Cincinnati, and Baun has enjoyed one of the most unlikely breakouts, transitioning from reserve pass rusher to tenacious off-ball starter in Vic Fangio’s Eagles defense.
Offensive Rookie of the Year
Getty Images
Daniels is a clear favorite here, knocking on the door of a historic Super Bowl appearance after an effortlessly splashy dual-threat debut for the Commanders. Thomas was a bona fide No. 1 in Jacksonville, though, and Bowers also made history for his high-volume pass catching in silver and black.
Defensive Rookie of the Year
Getty Images
Verse made an instant impact as the Rams’ top edge rusher, racking up 11 tackles for loss and 18 quarterback hits as a first-rounder. The Eagles have enjoyed veteran-level poise from their two freshmen cover men, with Mitchell in particular offering Philadelphia near-shutdown skills on the perimeter.
Comeback Player of the Year
USATSI
Burrow was one of the best passers in the game one year after missing seven games due to injuries. Dobbins and Gonzalez also missed most of the 2023 season while recovering from serious ailments. Darnold, on the other hand, emerged from the shadow of past failures with 35 scoring strikes.
Coach of the Year
USATSI
- Dan Campbell (Lions)
- Kevin O’Connell (Vikings)
- Sean Payton (Broncos)
- Dan Quinn (Commanders)
- Andy Reid (Chiefs)
Campbell led Detroit to an NFL-best 15-2 record one year after advancing to the NFC title game. O’Connell helped oversee Darnold’s rejuvenation en route to a 13-4 finish in the highly competitive NFC North. Both Payton and Quinn engineered surprise postseason bids with rookie quarterbacks.
Assistant Coach of the Year
USATSI
- Bills OC Joe Brady
- Eagles DC Vic Fangio
- Lions OC Ben Johnson
- Lions DC Aaron Glenn
- Vikings DC Brian Flores
Two of these men have already landed head coaching jobs elsewhere, with Johnson now atop the Chicago Bears, and Glenn in charge of the New York Jets. It’s also possible that Brady and Fangio could meet in Super Bowl LIX, squaring one of the NFL’s top offenses against one of its stingiest defenses.
The NFL has announced the finalists for the 2025 season awards, including MVP, Coach of the Year, and more. Among the players still in the running for the prestigious MVP award are star running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Josh Allen.Barkley, known for his incredible speed and agility, had a standout season leading the league in rushing yards and touchdowns. He has been a key player for his team, making game-changing plays and carrying the offense on his back.
Allen, on the other hand, has been a dominant force at the quarterback position, throwing for over 4,000 yards and leading his team to the playoffs. His leadership on and off the field has been instrumental in his team’s success this season.
In addition to the MVP award, there are also finalists for Coach of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year. The winners will be announced at the NFL Awards ceremony next week.
Stay tuned to see who will take home the hardware and be crowned the best of the best in the NFL for the 2025 season.

The Associated Press has announced the finalists for the NFL MVP award, and among them are three young stars who have taken the league by storm this season: Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley, and Lamar Jackson.Josh Allen, the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, has had a breakout season, leading his team to a division title and a playoff berth. Allen has showcased his arm strength and accuracy, as well as his ability to make plays with his legs. His leadership and poise in big moments have been instrumental in the Bills’ success this season.
Saquon Barkley, the dynamic running back for the New York Giants, has been a force to be reckoned with on the field. Lamar Jackson, the dual-threat quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, has been a revelation this season. Jackson’s ability to make defenders miss in the open field and his pinpoint accuracy as a passer have made him a nightmare for opposing defenses. The winner of the AP NFL MVP award will be announced in the coming weeks, but one thing is for certain: all three of these young stars have bright futures ahead of them in the league.
