Barry Sternlicht Is Bringing Back the Starwood Hotel Brand
Barry Sternlicht made a fortune building Starwood Hotels and Resorts, which birthed successful brands like W Hotels, into a giant of the travel industry.
Now he wants to do it all again — under the Starwood name.
Mr. Sternlicht is resurrecting the Starwood Hotels brand starting in February, nine years after the previous company was sold to Marriott in a $13 billion deal that created the biggest hotel chain in the world. His current hotel company, SH Hotels & Resorts, will take on the Starwood name.
The move is a sign that Mr. Sternlicht, 64, wants to reassert himself as a force in hospitality 20 years after stepping down from Starwood. Since then, he has focused largely on Starwood Capital, the $115 billion private equity firm where he created Starwood Hotels.
Hotels have remained part of part of Starwood Capital’s business, with Mr. Sternlicht buying and selling them just as he has apartment buildings and other properties. But since 2015, he said, he has wanted to have another crack at making a mark on the hotel-management industry under the Starwood name.
“I’m kind of like a singer having one song,” he said in an interview. “I want to have two songs.”
Reviving the Starwood name may seem like a small change in the grand scheme of things; indeed, Marriott had retired it years ago. But beyond his attachment to the name, Mr. Sternlicht believed getting it back would raise the company’s profile and help with recruiting. He took back the brand last year.
It’s the latest step in Mr. Sternlicht’s campaign to build a new hotel empire. By the time Marriott acquired the Starwood of old, that company oversaw more than 1,300 properties in 100 countries, with brands including Westin, W, Sheraton and St. Regis. The newly reborn Starwood has three brands so far, with 14 hotels in five countries.
It will likely be benchmarked against what Mr. Sternlicht achieved the first time around.
A real estate investor by background, Mr. Sternlicht hadn’t worked in the hotel business specifically before 1994, when his Starwood Capital bought Westin from a Japanese corporation, and then began adding other chains. In 1998, Mr. Sternlicht created the W chain, whose glamorous lobbies and bars made it synonymous with sleek chic.
He pored over even tiny details — the number of pillows, how porters handled guest luggage — at existing chains like Westin and Sheraton. “I’m like the style police, so people don’t drift off,” he said.
And at Westin Hotels, he introduced what he called the Heavenly Bed, which quickly became a selling point for the chain. It was a gamble on upgrading travelers’ experience at the chain, though associates initially balked at the cost.
“To change every bed in Westins cost $17 million,” Mr. Sternlicht said. “It was the best $17 million we ever spent.”
The Heavenly Bed quickly became popular, leading to it being sold at Nordstroms — and to rivals rolling out their own fluffy snow-white mattress offerings.
“He was the one who really cemented the concept of lifestyle hotels,” said Bjorn Hanson, a hospitality consultant, calling Mr. Sternlicht one of the architects of the modern hotel business. “The industry needed an outsider to say, ‘What’s important to hotel guests?’”
Mr. Sternlicht stepped down as Starwood’s executive chairman in 2005, after years of often clashing with the company’s other top executives. A decade later, Marriott bought Starwood after a fierce bidding war with a Chinese insurance firm.
By that point, Mr. Sternlicht had gotten back into hotel operations, creating three new chains. One is the high-end Baccarat, whose Manhattan location features ornate crystal chandeliers by the French glassmaker from whom it licenses its brand. (Starwood Capital once owned that company, too.)
Another is 1 Hotels, an environmentally minded lifestyle brand, with wood, stone and green foliage adorning the lobbies. A third is Treehouse, which Mr. Sternlicht described as a playful brand with vintage stylings meant to remind travelers of childhood. And he said that he has been working on at least one more brand.
The new Starwood has plans to open 22 hotels in the pipeline through 2028, including 1 Hotels in Austin, Texas; on Crete and in Seattle; Treehouses in Manchester, England, and Miami; and Baccarats in Dubai, United Arab Emirates; the Maldives and Rome. All three brands are expected to open locations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as well.
(Mr. Sternlicht added that while he had no intention of selling the hotel company, he had considered selling a small portion to raise money for further international expansion.)
But the hotel industry has become much more crowded since Mr. Sternlicht built the original Starwood. His innovations — in amenities and customer service, design, marketing and more — have been absorbed by competitors. Every major operator has a lifestyle brand, and scores of independent boutiques have opened.
For Mr. Sternlicht, though, the work itself is part of the motivation.
“This is my passion,” he said. “Designing hotels and keeping them on brand is fun.”
Barry Sternlicht, the founder and former CEO of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, is making a big comeback with the iconic hotel brand. After selling Starwood to Marriott in 2016, Sternlicht announced plans to revive the brand and bring back its signature luxury and innovation.Sternlicht is known for his visionary leadership and innovative approach to hospitality, and he is determined to restore Starwood to its former glory. With a focus on creating unique and unforgettable guest experiences, Sternlicht is set to launch new properties under the Starwood name in key markets around the world.
Fans of Starwood can expect to see the brand’s trademark style and service, along with new and exciting additions that reflect Sternlicht’s forward-thinking approach. From cutting-edge design to top-notch amenities, the revived Starwood Hotels will offer guests a truly exceptional stay.
Stay tuned for updates on Barry Sternlicht’s exciting revival of the Starwood Hotel brand, and get ready to experience the magic of Starwood once again.

Country music star Chad Morgan has died at the age of 91.
The singer died in hospital at Gin Gin near Bundaberg in Queensland on the evening of New Year’s Day, according to the ABC.
Chad, known fondly by his well-known nickname ‘The Sheik of Scrubby Creek’, was one of the best-known pioneers in Australian country music.
His son Chad Junior confirmed his father’s passing and tributes quickly flooded in for the nationally beloved music icon.
Country singer Evelyn Bury, who was a good friend of Chad’s, described the singer as a ‘beautiful larrikin’ in a heartfelt tribute.
‘There’ll never be another Chad,’ she added.

Chad was one of the best-known pioneers in Australian country music. He is pictured being presented with a lifetime achievement award at the 38th CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia in 2004
Chad was born in 1933 and raised in the South Burnett town of Wondai by his grandparents.
He worked cutting timber and sugar before he was discovered through Australia’s Amateur Hour radio program and launched his music career.
‘I went into the air force in ’52 and mates heard me singing and they dared me to go on Amateur Hour and it snowballed from there,’ Chad previously told the ABC.
He started recording with Regal Zonophone and in 1958, he released his debut album The Sheik of Scrubby Creek, the title of which refers to his well-known nickname.
Chad had a hugely successful country music career spanning more than 70 years and has played all over Australia at almost every venue from pubs to the Sydney Opera House.
He was also a regular on Reg Lindsay’s Country and Western Hour and was beloved for his signature sense of humour.
He is best-known for his comedic country tracks including I’m My Own Grandpa, The Shotgun Wedding, Double Decker Blowflies and There’s Life In The Old Dog Yet.
As well as his hugely successful career, Chad’s distinctive teeth were also believed to have inspired Barry Humphries iconic character Les Patterson.

As well as his hugely successful career, Chad’s distinctive teeth also reportedly inspired Barry Humphries iconic character Les Patterson (pictured)
Chad boasts platinum and gold album sales and was inducted into the Tamworth Hands of Fame in 1979.
In 2004, he received a Medal of the Order of Australia and he was also recognised with a lifetime achievement award at the 2010 Country Music Association of Australia Awards.
Last year, there was a push to induct Chad into the Australian ARIA Hall of Fame led by Anna Rose, who wrote a biography about his life and career.
‘I think it’s an absolute tragedy that he’s got to the age of 90 and has not been put into the hall of fame. So many others have,’ Anna told The Senior.
‘And I’m wondering how many of those have a 70-year career that’s been exceptional. And he’s known not just all over Australia but all over the world.’
In his personal life, Chad married fellow singer Pam Mitchell and they went on to welcome three children – Allan, Chad Jr and Janelle.
After their split, Chad went on to re-marry Joan Morgan when he was in his 50s and they were together for more than 30 years until her death in 2017.

Win or lose, Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty could make history in the Fiesta Bowl.
The Heisman Trophy runner-up is on the doorstep of the FBS single-season rushing record, sitting 131 yards shy of Barry Sanders’ 1988 mark that has stood for 36 years. While 131 yards against Penn State’s defense is a tall task for anyone, it might just be another day at the office for Jeanty, who ran for more than 125 yards in every game he played this season.
Anyone who breaks Sanders’ record will receive an asterisk, whether fair or not. Sanders played in an era that counted some stats differently, and the exclusion of Oklahoma State’s bowl game from his stats has some believing 2,628 shouldn’t be considered the true record.
Here’s a look at Sanders’ record-setting 1988 season and what he did in Oklahoma State’s bowl game.
MORE ASHTON JEANTY NEWS:
Barry Sanders rushing record
Sanders previewed a Hall of Fame NFL career when he ran for 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns in 1988, smashing the record previously held by Marcus Allen.
Sanders averaged 7.6 yards per carry and easily won the Heisman Trophy, receiving 559 first-place votes to Rodney Peete’s 70. Sanders’ 37 rushing touchdowns remain a single-season record as well.
Sanders himself wished Jeanty luck in his pursuit of the rushing record on social media ahead of the Mountain West title game.
Hey @AshtonJeanty2 – Wishing you luck tonight.
My fans can gripe, but records are made to be broken & I am rooting for you. I love seeing all these @NFL and @NCAA #RBs showing the value of the position. #RunTheRock pic.twitter.com/bk0NtPbAL0— Barry Sanders (@BarrySanders) December 6, 2024
Sanders recorded multiple rushing touchdowns in each game in 1988, including three five-touchdown games. He ran for less than 200 yards in five of his first six games but increased the pace with three games of at least 300 yards the rest of the way.
Bowl games did not count toward anyone’s stats in 1988, however. That means Sanders’ Holiday Bowl performance didn’t count while Jeanty’s Fiesta Bowl stats will.
Here are the details on Sanders’ bowl stats and the differences between his season and Jeanty’s.

How many games did Barry Sanders play in 1988?
Sanders played in 12 games in 1988, but only 11 of them counted toward the record book. The 12th game was the Holiday Bowl, but his impressive performance didn’t count toward his season stats.
The NCAA began counting bowl games toward a player’s stats in 2002.

Barry Sanders bowl game stats in 1988
Sanders rushed for 222 yards and five touchdowns against Wyoming in the 1988 Holiday Bowl. Oklahoma State won 62-14.
- Rush att.: 29
- Rush yards: 222
- TD: 5
- YPC: 7.7
With those totals, Sanders ultimately ran for 2,850 yards and 42 TDs in 1988. The Hall of Famer was a record-setter regardless, but his records would have an even greater chance of standing the test of time if they included an additional 222 yards and five touchdowns.

That wasn’t a failure on the Cowboys’ part — Sanders started behind fellow Pro Football Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas.
A running back room of Thomas and Sanders sounds like something out of a movie, but Stillwater lived it for two seasons before Sanders took the reins and put together the season of a lifetime.
MORE COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS:
Barry Sanders is widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs in college football history, and his incredible 1988 season at Oklahoma State is a big reason why. However, there has been some confusion and controversy surrounding his rushing record from that season, particularly in regards to his performance in the Holiday Bowl.In the 1988 Holiday Bowl, Sanders rushed for 222 yards and five touchdowns against Wyoming, putting on a show for fans and solidifying his status as a top NFL prospect. However, these stats were not officially counted towards his NCAA rushing total for the season.
The reason for this discrepancy lies in the NCAA’s rules at the time. In 1988, the NCAA did not include bowl game statistics in a player’s season total for rushing yards. This meant that despite his incredible performance in the Holiday Bowl, Sanders’ 222 yards and five touchdowns did not count towards his official season total of 2,628 rushing yards and 37 touchdowns.
While this may seem like a technicality, it has led to some confusion over the years about Sanders’ place in the record books. Some have argued that if his Holiday Bowl stats were included, he would have broken numerous additional records and solidified his place as the greatest rushing season in college football history.
Regardless of this technicality, there is no denying the incredible talent and dominance that Sanders displayed during the 1988 season. His record-breaking season is still considered one of the greatest individual performances in college football history, and his legacy as a running back is secure.

Ashton Jeanty came up just short in his quest to become the first Heisman Trophy-winning running back since 2015.
However, Jeanty enters No. 3 Boise State‘s College Football Playoff matchup vs. No. 6 Penn State with a chance at making history. The Broncos (12-1) take on the Nittany Lions (11-2) at 7:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday in the Fiesta Bowl from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with a chance to advance to the semifinals.

While a team accomplishment is on Jeanty’s mind, he also has a chance to break former Oklahoma State great running back Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing record set in 1988. Jeanty enters the game fourth all-time in rushing yards in a season and is within reach of the record.
Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter beat out Jeanty for the Heisman Trophy on Dec. 14, denying Jeanty a chance to become the first Heisman-winning running back since Alabama’s Derrick Henry won the honor in 2015. Hunter edged out Jeanty for the trophy by 214 points in the closest vote since 2009, when Alabama’s Mark Ingram beat Stanford’s Toby Gerhart by 28 points.
Here’s what you need to know about the NCAA rushing record and a look at Jeanty’s stats:
NCAA football single-season rushing leaders all-time
Jeanty enters the CFP quarterfinal matchup needing 132 rushing yards to pass Sanders’ single-season rushing record of 2,268 set during the 1988 season. Jeanty will pass Kevin Smith for third (2,567) with 70 yards and Melvin Gordon (2,587) for second with 90 more yards.
Jeanty has 13 100-yard rushing games, 10 games of over 150 rushing yards and six over 200 yards this season. So breaking the record is well reason, even against one of the staunchest defenses he’ll face this year.
Here’s a look at the top 10 single-season rushing yards in NCAA history:
Bowl stats were not included in NCAA record keeping before 2002.
- Barry Sanders, Oklahoma State: 2,628 yards (1988)
- Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin: 2,587 yards (2004)
- Kevin Smith, UCF: 2,567 yards (2007)
- Ashton Jeanty, Boise State: 2,497 yards (2024)
- Marcus Allen, USC: 2,342 yards (1981)
- Rashad Penny, San Diego State: 2,248 (2017)
- Derrick Henry, Alabama: 2,219 yards (2015)
- Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin: 2,194 yards (2018)
- Troy Davis, Iowa State: 2,185 yards (1996)
- Andre Williams, Boston College: 2,177 yards (2013)

- 2023: 220 carries for 1,347 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns; 43 receptions for 569 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns
- 2024: 344 rushes for 2,497 yards, 29 touchdowns; 20 receptions for 116 yards and one touchdown

Ashton Jeanty, the star running back for the University of Michigan Wolverines, has been making headlines all season long with his incredible performances on the field. Now, as the Wolverines prepare to take on their biggest rival, Penn State, fans are wondering if Jeanty can break Barry Sanders’ record for most rushing yards in a single game.Barry Sanders, a legendary running back for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, set the record back in 1988 when he rushed for an astonishing 357 yards against the University of Texas Longhorns. Since then, no player has been able to come close to breaking that record.
However, Jeanty has been on a tear this season, leading the Big Ten in rushing yards and touchdowns. With his combination of speed, agility, and power, many believe he has what it takes to surpass Sanders’ record.
The matchup against Penn State will be a tough test for Jeanty, as the Nittany Lions boast one of the top defenses in the conference. But if anyone can rise to the occasion, it’s Jeanty.
So, can Ashton Jeanty break Barry Sanders’ record against Penn State? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – all eyes will be on Jeanty as he looks to etch his name in the record books. Let’s go Wolverines! #GoBlue #BreakTheRecord
